Things That Will Help is a podcast that explores what it’s like to be human, and how to find tools to feel clear, grounded, and happier. Each week, an episode full of rich story-telling and embodied practices that bring the themes Buffy discusses to real life. These stories ahead do not negate the hard or the darkness, but rather point to the lighthouses along the way.
In this episode, Buffy explores imagination as a doorway into a life that hasn't already been mapped out for you.
Most of us imagine our future using a blueprint we inherited: beliefs handed down through our families, our culture, and the world we grew up in. Those guardrails once offered real protection and direction. But what happens when they no longer fit the life you're trying to build? How do you unbraid the stories you've been told about yourself and the world? And what becomes possible when you begin forging a path that is unmistakably your own?

After attending Love Letter from the Afterlife at Red Rocks—a tribute to the late poet Andrea Gibson featuring their final performance alongside the Colorado Symphony—Buffy returns to one simple phrase from Andrea's work: try softer.
In this episode, she explores what it means to meet life with less force and more presence. Through stories and reflection, Buffy considers how softening can become a daily practice for the body, heart, and spirit. What changes when you stop pushing against your circumstances? What does softness look like when it meets your loss and grief?

A murmuration is when a flock of thousands (or sometimes, hundreds of thousands) of birds move together across the sky like a wave, or a cloud of smoke. Buffy explores the surprising mechanics behind these breathtaking displays, where no single bird leads and yet the whole flock moves as one. She talks about the social and physical mechanics of this phenomenon, and what we can learn about connection and community from these birds.

Buffy begins this episode with a friend’s story about navigating a challenging work situation. Using the metaphor of an airplane, her friend described the inner shift that allowed her to rise above the turbulence rather than remain caught within it. “Cruising altitude” is the steady height an aircraft maintains for most of a journey, and this episode is a reflection on the places of steadiness inside of us, even when turbulence exists on either side. Tune in to access more equanimity in your inner world no matter what weather systems that surround you.

In the wake of Mother’s Day, Buffy reflects on mothers: what we are mothering, how we are mothered, and the creative shapes being a mother can take. She shares about experiencing her first Mother’s Day without her mom and weaves in stories of people in all stages and phases. This episode is a spacious offering for wherever you find yourself in relationship to mothering — whether you are grieving, nurturing, longing, creating, or becoming. Buffy closes out the episode closes with a grounding visualization and meditation.

Labor doesn't have to deplete or harden us. In this episode, Buffy explores the space between arriving and striving, and invites us into the magic and beauty of the process as we aim towards a specific destination - into the magic of holy labor.

This episode is an offering for anyone in the middle of something—creative, personal, or otherwise—and a reminder that the unfinished places might be where the light gets in.

In this episode, Buffy expands on the concept of mantra (a chant, a syllable, a steadying truth) into mantrika, which translates to “little mothers," or the worlds and phrases that we birth into existence daily. What are the words we repeat, consciously or unconsciously, that shape the architecture of our inner and outer worlds? If language creates reality, then each syllable is a seed. This episode is a call to choose your words with clarity, and in doing so, to build your world consciously.

Buffy had a plan for how she would give birth: what she would wear, where she would be, how it would unfold. It was a lovely plan which did not pan out at all. This is an episode about holding our plans and ideas with a loose grip so we don't miss the primal magic that wants to come through. Buffy tells stories of birthing gowns, Charlotte's Web, and more, to illustrate how having a real-time, unfolding conversation with the alive and breathing world is just as important (and maybe more) than the plans we make.

Buffy begins this episode with the story of Holocaust survivor Edith Eva Eger, and the choices Eger made in the face of unimaginable trauma. While trauma and circumstance may be outside of our choice, this conversation explores the agency we have in how we met them. She differentiates between spiritual bypassing and the brave practice of placing our attention on what is true and beautiful, even when pain is present. This episode is an invitation to curate your inner landscape, because, when we do, the life we long for becomes more reachable.

In this episode, Buffy explores themes of holding. What are you holding—right now, in your hands, in your heart, in your attention? She considers the ways we hold things—grief, secrets, memories, hope—and how everything we hold benefits from breath and softness, especially when the storms rolls in.
This is an episode about attention, tenderness, and the possibility that in loosening our grip, we might find our way back to what we belong to, and what belongs to us.

In this episode, Buffy talks about the plant rosemary as a guide and teacher. Rosemary, AKA the compass weed, the old man, is the plant of remembrance. Buffy shares what she is learning about this ancient and practical plant: its effects on the body and mind, its symbolic and ceremonial uses, and why this time of year is such a potent moment to invite it in. She talks about how rosemary has been supporting her in the wake of her mother’s death, and how its steady, fragrant wisdom might become a companion to you, too.

In this episode Buffy shares three stories of bravery and presence: her daughter braving her first cliff jump with a hundred witnesses; her son choosing courage over conformity; and her mother, in the final stages of life, reflecting on the light she brought to others. These stories weave together into a reminder that a life well lived isn’t about avoiding fear or hardship, but about meeting each moment with fullness and love—so that, at least most of the time, the room feels brighter because we entered it.

In this episode, Buffy introduces the Circle of Willis — a vital loop of arteries that keeps blood flowing to our brains, even when part of the path is blocked. She uses this miraculous piece of human design as a powerful metaphor: when life blocks one path, it often quietly reroutes us to another, sometimes better, direction.
This divine circulation redirects us when we’re stuck, keeps us alive, and moves toward what’s meant for us. Through personal stories and reflections, Buffy reminds us that life, like the Circle of Willis, wants us to live. Whether you're in a season of smooth flow or frustrating blockages, this episode invites you to trust the reroute.

This episode is about the rules we inherit—spoken and unspoken, cultural and familial—and how to discern whether they’re truly in service to our lives. So many of our thoughts, standards, and habits are built on default settings we didn’t consciously choose. What would it look like to pause, question, and redefine them?
Buffy asks questions like: What expectations are we unconsciously trying to meet? Which rules have we internalized without realizing it? And what could happen if we let them go?
This is an invitation to build systems of thought and ways of being that align with your true values—not just the values you were handed. It's not about throwing everything out; it's about becoming more intentional with what you keep.

What is occupying your time and energy? Do these things actively contribute to your life? And if not - how do you begin to shift course when the investment runs deep?
Using the lens of the sunk cost fallacy, Buffy reflects on how challenging it can be to release something we've poured ourselves into. She posits that staying out of habit, history, or fear of change can block the natural evolution of our lives.
Inspired by the seasonal shift of the summer solstice, Buffy invites listeners to consider what needs to be brought into the light—and what might need to be gently folded into the dark. She introduces the concept of becoming a hollow bone—an active practice of clearing space, listening deeply, and allowing truth to move through you without resistance.
Changing your mind isn’t failure. It’s alignment. It’s listening. It’s choosing now over nostalgia. And it’s often the bravest thing we can do. Let this episode be a companion if you’re feeling the urge to pivot, release, or begin again.

At any given moment, we may be experiencing a major beginning or a major ending; in this episode, Buffy explores why marking these moments matter, and how to do that. She reflects on how ritual can help us digest loss, honor change, and find our way forward. What could be possible when you purposefully witness meaningful transitions in your life? Ceremony creates a space to pause, digest meaning, and name what’s been lost and gained.
This episode offers gentle ways to slow down and honor where you are. Listeners will walk away with rituals they can integrate into everyday life to mark any moment.

Buffy opens this week’s episode by talking about the part vs. the whole; how, in times of great change, we usually don’t get to understand why something is happening to us. Meaning, and wisdom, arrive slowly and often in small moments.
This episode is an invitation to make your life smaller. To eliminate what’s not necessary, reject what doesn’t truly feed and nourish you, so that what is beautiful in your life can be amplified.
Buffy tells stories of farm walks, picnic table run-ins, and more, and invites listeners into spaciousness and trust - even, and especially if, things are feeling messy.

In this episode, Buffy explores the juxtaposition between belonging and dissonance. She talks about the way communities can lighten the load and encourage bravery and belonging - as well as the pitfalls of what happens when we only surround ourselves with what feels familiar. Buffy challenges us to get curious about what is not like us through stories of post-car crashes, sheer tops, and unexpected moments of friction.
Growth often comes from being around people who don’t think like us. How do we strike the balance between enough similarity to feel at home, and enough difference to stretch and challenge us?

How does deep listening shape the way we experience life? How does it help us notice what we might otherwise overlook? Buffy reflects on the shift from doing into being, and how fulfillment can meet us when we let ourselves be present with our process. She talks about the connection between listening and play, and how joy and creativity can deepen our relationship to our inner life. Buffy leaves listeners with the question: what legacy do do want to leave? How do you become, not just through what you do, but through the way you listen, move, and exist in the world?

This episode is a hodgepodge of beauty and hope. In this historically monumental time, Buffy highlights importance of taking deep care and paying attention to what is good and beautiful. Your attention is a precious and finite resource. This episode is a reminder of the importance of using that resource well, and with skill, by focusing on magic and synchronicity alongside the pain and the suffering.

It is easy for challenging moments in our lives to capture our attention and energy; it is perhaps much more difficult to pay attention to what's beautiful, true, and brings us joy. In this episode, Buffy encourages more presence and attention to what we enjoy - not to bypass the pain, but to build our reserves in order to face what's challenging in our lives with more fortitude, ease, and contentment.

Buffy starts the episode with discussing the Bystander Effect, which says that the greater number of bystanders that are witness to an emergency situation or bully, the less likely it is for any one of them to provide help for the person in distress.
She uses this as a jumping off point as a call for us to take radical responsibility for our lives, even when it is inconvenient; even when it is difficult; even when it is easier to shirk it. Wanting it is not always enough - so what can we do to bridge the gap between wanting it and having it? Tune in to find out.

Today's episode explores how we can cultivate joy, health, and happiness without turning our faces away from the pain of the world, which sometimes asks for our attention and other times demands it. Buffy recorded this at a time where a non-binary student was murdered in a bathroom, and where war ravages across the Middle East and beyond. These are times that, as Buffy teacher says, are "relentless and exhausting," as she calls us to take better care of ourselves now, more than ever. When we strengthen a cell in the body, we strengthen the body.

How do you make decisions? Swiftly and suddenly? Do you let ideas marinate before you move forward? Buffy's story about Tricia's buggy (southern for "shopping cart") illustrates the wisdom of our desires, and how sometimes pausing can give us the space to hear them truly and clearly.
Can we begin to normalize the practice of checking in with ourselves before we make decisions; pausing, breathing, and seeing what changes? Buffy talks about this, and more, in this week's episode.

How can we help ourselves feel safe instead of bracing for impact?
We get curious.
Just like we might be if we found ourselves in a new town. Entering a new place - physically, mentally, or emotionally - with a spirit of wonder and curiosity can create a completely different experience than defaulting to old patterns of fear, pain, and anxiety. Buffy talks about her ankle replacement recovery to elaborate on this gorgeous metaphor and walks listeners through practical ways to build new patterns, pathways, and discoveries for ourselves.

Buffy tells stories of the Hindu deity Ganesha, or Ganapati. Mythology can be used as a tool to help us see ourselves more clearly, no matter our religion, prayer, or conversation we are having with the divine. This is a human conversation and an invitation into a deeper experience of yourself through the keeper of the threshold, Ganesh, and the wisdom he offers us.

Calling all worriers! What if you could see how you spend your time in a visual form, like a pie chart? How big of a pie slice would be spent worrying, ruminating, or projecting into the future? Buffy opens this episode with this pie chart image and takes listeners immediately stories that illuminate how getting to the root - the truth - of a story can reduce our time spent fretting. She ties up the episode with practical tips on how to either a) get to the root and b) move energy if the root feels inaccessible for the moment.

Can "maybe" be a gift, rather than a liability? This is an episode about relinquishing control and deepening trust in the face of endless maybes.
It begins with a special guest reading a family favorite book and asks you to consider what ways you could make the "maybe's" sweeter, easier, and more full of trust.
"Maybe, just maybe, the world has been waiting for someone exactly like you. One thing is for sure: you are here, and because you are here, anything is possible."

Buffy opens the episode with the story of Matthew Shepard - a young gay man who was brutally murdered - and about the gentle, magical animal presence at the scene of the crime. This is an episode about being a spacious, compassionate presence for the ones we love. Our kind attention - without judgement, advice, or solution-oriented actions - can be the most precious healing balm. Buffy tells stories of a cat named Prissy, a hospice vigil, and an 7-year-old's feet.

Visualization can help us become more conscious of the waters we're swimming in, and call in more of what we desire towards us. Listen for practical ways to integrate visualization into your life, and of course, The Fucking Chicken.

There are moments in our lives where we to be reconnected to the big picture, and there are moments where we need to look at our feet in order to take the next right step. How do we discern which tools we need?
Buffy uses the metaphors of "the mountain" and "the magnifying glass" as different medicines that are available to us when we are feeling lost. She tells stories of kittens, stage four cancer, and how the braiding of these two vantage points delivers potent lessons and direction.

What happens when we see perceived obstacles as doorways to growth? Buffy gives examples of the ways "unexpected weather" can lead us to places - beautiful places - we did not expect to go. She tells stories of internal and external rearranging, post-bath time changes, and fresh-air walks to illustrate the ways we can change our problems through changing the way we view our problems.
How we receive friction is essential to how we thrive, and she offers tangible ways to start to re-wire the way we consider problems.

Do your fears have legs? Do you dress them up and bring them into the spotlight? In this episode, Buffy offers the idea of "feeding the good wolf" - and how that is a gift not only to ourselves, but to the world. Distinct from "fake it till you make it," Buffy provides practical ways we can amplify what's good and bright in us.

Buffy is back with more beauty marks: AKA, beautiful simple things that make life a little brighter (couldn't we all use a little more of that?). Some things that make an appearance: a throwback organizational tool, products of boredom, an old love story, and more. What are the moments and mementos that are marking beauty in your life? We recommend making your own list to keep you connected to the mundane magic of every day.

Today's episode is devoted to those who desire to live a creative life. Buffy shares her own layered process within the creative cycle and invites you to step into your own fulfilling creative life. And, if you don't consider yourself a "creative," take heart: creativity is not limited to artistic practices only. Creativity can reach our families, communities, and the ways we build our days.

Buffy begins this week's episode by sharing a tender story about her family to illustrate the theme of ceremony, and why it matters. What can repetition, intention, and ritual add to your life? She shares stories of spa nights, frying an egg on a sidewalk, and the small, ordinary things that can bring life-giving meaning to our days.

We are in a time of deep collective and individual pain. In this episode, Buffy encourages listeners to arrive into their bodies before taking action. This week's episode is a smattering of practices - think of it as a table of tapas - that help you facilitate conscious conversation, look for the magic, and not rush to the next thing before you've digested new information. Tune in for stories of broken cameras, boundaries, and encouragement to look for the beauty amongst the broken in your life.

Buffy posits that because we have access to so much information, it's not often we encounter the feeling of longing. She tells stories of sweet treats, hot fries, baby whales, and the lily-pad nature of longing.

We don't belong everywhere or with everyone.
This is the basis of today's episode: rejection helps us get specific and clear in our lives. Buffy talks about her recent rejection practice, what we don't get to know about the times we've been rejected, and why the mainstream is overrated.
At the end of this episode, you might just believe that, when we look at it with the right gaze, rejection has the potential to be life-affirming.

“The true piece of art lives without the artist explaining it."
This episode is dedicated entirely to the potent space we leave after we set a boundary, talking point, or decision. Buffy talks about the ways over-explanation has the potential to dilute our alignment and resolve. What if instead, we trusted ourselves and our boundaries? What if we trusted other people to be in their own perfect process?
This lesson is relevant in so, so many areas of life - emails, compliments, artwork, and so much more. Tune in to consider the areas of your life where you could use some space.

Writing is alchemical. It changes us, and it changes what we write about - especially if it's a piece of our story. In this episode, Buffy tells stories of dancing love letters, mixtapes, and hand-written t-shirts as a way to support the claim that writing changes who we are and how we operate in the world.
Your homework this week: write yourself into being. (Bonus: Let us know how it goes.)

The edges of the day are cooling off. Can you feel it? The slight drop in temp is the inspiration for this week's episode, where Buffy talks about the Fall season and why it is such a potent time to implement rituals to get focused and clean house.
This week's stories include new school supplies (can you smell the fresh pencils?!), five-year lists, and treasure hunting. Buffy shares what she's up to, what she's hoping to integrate, and invites you to create your own rituals that help ease you into the turn of the season.

Buffy starts off Season 5 with something we hope is useful to you right now: hope.
Buffy shares about her experiences with depression, which she describes as a cave. She talks about how why, in the darkness of the cave, things like green juice and gratitude practices can't always touch the heart of depression. She shares stories of her father, foot massages, and Robin Williams to illuminate the secretive nature of depression and the ways hope can help us keep going.
Just keep going.

If you were a library, what kind of stories would you contain?
This is the basis for today's episode, inspired by Jason Reynolds' talk "Libraries Within Us." This is an episode about creativity - how, when we lean into the mallelable nature of life, we have an opportunity to break down what we think is concrete. Who are you when you let the stories of your life fall away? Buffy talks about this and more through story and lived experience.
TTWH is taking a quick break and will be back in a few weeks. See you soon!

You are whole and perfect.
In this episode, Buffy teases apart the idea of wholeness as a belief system and the ways wholeness does - or does not - create the foundation for our relationships. On the docket for these 30 minutes: Rilke, a date-less incubator, and a tale of two nightgowns.
This is an episode for anyone who is, has ever been, will ever be in a relationship. It’s also for those who have sworn off relationships altogether. Wholeness is a powerful foundation for a relationship and Buffy breaks it - and boundaries, and dependency - down brick by brick.
“Let it come from wholeness.”

In this episode, she talks about trusting people to take care of themselves to lessen your scurry. Expect tales of dueling dietary preferences and Papaw's extended stay. This episode is about boundaries, stillness, and discernment all in one. Today's episode is about feedback - but not in a professional setting. Today, Buffy talks about feedback from a personal place. She talks about the context, set-up, and the ways feedback is most effective. Today's stories are about rainbow carpet conversations, births, and approaching feedback with curiosity.
The poem Buffy reads at the end is "The Proposal" by Mary Ann Broyles.

The Lucky - aka, electrifying, spark-filled, pure magic - exists. And we don't have to be on our best behavior for it to come to us. It's not about talent, it's not about doing well, it's not about being good - it's an undercurrent that exists no matter what.
To help this story land in your body and your experience, Buffy tells stories of artists residencies, cartoon animals, and sticking hands in public toilets. If you're looking for a dose of magic in your day, seriously, do not skip this episode.

"We calm down when we are witnessed. And then we can allow ourselves to be carried."
Don't turn away from this week's episode about grief. Grief will help. If you're a longtime listener of this podcast, you know that grief is not a novel topic. In this episode, Buffy digs deeper into the devastating magic of grief; and how we can shape it into art, link it to a collective empathy, and use it to help us find our breath.
"Grief is the price of love. Loving someone means that one day there will be grieving. They will leave you or you will leave them. The more you love them more you grieve. Loving someone also means grieving with them. It means letting their pain and loss bleed into your heart. When you see that pain coming, you may want to throw up the guardrails, sound the alarm, raise the flag, but you must keep the borders of your heart porous in order to love well. It is an act of surrender when we are brave enough to sit with our pain. It deepens our ability to sit with the pain of others. it shows us how to love them." -Valarie Kaur, "See No Stranger"

Take a moment to reflect on the pockets of your life where you're taking up space, nurturing your creativity, or calling in fertility. Can you feel the audacity of it? How much boldness it takes to create something that doesn't yet exist?

Imagine this: you have a transcript of your internal dialogue, from the moment you wake up to the moment you lay your head on your pillow. What would the transcript say? What's the tone and the flavor? Would you share it with other people?
Buffy shares the translation of the Sanskrit word mantrika as "little mothers," and in this episode, she talks about all of the ways our inner talk can both take us down and bolster us up. She spins tale of cleaning cupholders, mommy-and-me swimming classes and bar crawl scratches, and ice-cold showers.
Our immunity builds strength when our inner voice is uplifting. Our stress and cortisol levels decrease when we're kinder. This isn't fluffy: it's important, and it affects our health on a cellular level! To change the hard cut patterns of negative self-talk, we have to notice when it happens. Buffy shares different ways we can notice the patterns and re-route through different practices, including mantra, acronyms, and more.

"What sticks to me is mine, and what doesn't stick to me was never mine to begin with."
This episode is entirely devoted to the practice of letting things go without taking it personally. Clamping down on people, things, and ideas? It probably doesn't work the way you want it to. Buffy tells stories of failed party friends, people and homes changing forms, and what happens when we allow for the uninhibited flow and grace of love to appear on its own, without restriction.
What's possible when you let your life breathe? What happens when you practice releasing what is changing form, and noticing what is coming into view?
"Put your eyes on that fresh land. It wants your focus, your breath, and your time. The rest will become food for something else."

This week's teaching of "generation" comes at the request of a student looking for ways to access more motivation in their lives. How can we break routines or create new, helpful habits? Buffy says: don't wait. Just begin. She emphasizes the amazing benefits of a daily, timed container (and if you've ever taken her class before, you know she means it).
In this episode, you'll hear stories of changed behavior around houseguests, daily dance parties, ACDC's "Thunderstruck." Buffy talks about the importance of the container and how, when we honor it, we begin to crave it. She shares her current timings that she is extremely regular with it - right now. Your personal daily timings can change because variety is healthy. This week, do your best to set one five-minute timed practice you believe would be helpful for you to ritualize daily. Then, let us know how it goes.

This episode dances around the themes of concealment and revelation; forgetting and remembering. Buffy talks about the concept of "Wintering" (by Katherine May), and why a good winter leads to a robust and vital summer. Contrast can help us remember who we are.
Life has a rhythm - it doesn't stay dark and it doesn't stay light. There is usually a mixture, and when we can lean into the trust of the flux, life swings more easily.
This episode includes stories of chocolate cake for breakfast, porch-side hellos, and the imminent joy of getting to hug our people after many pandemic months. You'll leave feeling hopeful and clear in maybe what it is you're currently forgetting - or remembering.

"If we don't get lost, then we can't really be found - we can't remember what it feels like to come back home if we never learn to really wander."
When was the last time you were lost? Buffy moves us through stories of getting lost, distinguishing its different varieties in a way both poetic and practical. A healthy kind of getting lost feels like a lost that creates strength and gratitude to return home. Listen for stories of Christopher McCandless, the Man on the Moon, and a dense Alabama forest.

Welcome to Season 3 of Things That Will Help. Buffy begins this season right in the middle - in media res. She discusses the idea of the threshold, and how we are always in the middle, on our way up, or on our way down, from just about everything. What are your practices, and your sacred spaces, when you're in the middle? Can you make time, instead of waiting for the perfect time? What can you build in the middle of things?

Have you ever felt the wide, encompassing experience of grace? If you're not sure, this episode will light up the ways grace can be lived, felt, and experienced. This grace is not a grace that drains the tank, and Buffy elucidates the exceptions that are massively important to consider in the deliverance ofo grace.
She tells tales of Elvis Presley's Memphis home, the illegal scattering of human remains, early morning peeping toms, and more.

We spend so much time considering how other people think of us, rather than tending to the core of who we are - rather than remembering ourselves. If you stripped away all of the personal hurts, injustices, and trauma that have covered you up, and made you self-protect over the years, what would be underneath that? What's the quality you come by most honestly?
In this episode, you’ll learn how to remember yourself - your deepest self - through stories of dancing through Alzheimer's, organ transplants and cellular memories, Little Orphan Annie, and more.

Well… it’s election week, and even though Buffy recorded this before we knew the results, her message is simple: roll out the red carpet for your feelings. Be in their bigness, their complexity, and their fullness. Don’t skip over them. Are you celebrating this week? Feel it. Grieving? Feel it. And, no matter what, remember: we can’t abide in feeling by ourselves. Find your people, be in community, and live into the question instead of the answer.

What do you believe in? What do you give a damn about? In this episode, Buffy talks about the high stakes moment in time we are living in, a time where neutrality and silence can have dangerous consequences. Beauty marks are daily, sense-based, present-tense small treasures that are hopeful, happy, and good. Small lighthouses. They don’t negate anything hard, but they help one to remember the beauty amidst the difficulty. She reads the original Things That Will Help by her brother Benjamin, who was the catalyst for this podcast.
There is so much difficulty these days. No matter what you are managing in your life, Buffy encourages you to discover the “beauty marks” in your own life by sharing the simplicities of her own. Her stories will have you “mhm-ing” and “mmmm-ing” for the duration of the episode. This week, make a list of your own beauty marks.

Intuition: it’s really simple, and it’s really hard. It is, like most things, a practice. The voice of our intuition is always there, but we listen selectively. Buffy weaves stories of torn ACLs, blue necklaces, and a dangerous hot springs encounter, which will have you both holding your breath and breathing more deeply afterward.
This week, get quiet enough to hear yourself. Get low enough to the ground to prioritize listening for what’s next. The thing is, we usually know what to do, but we don’t usually slow down enough to listen. Your body is likely talking to you already.

Do you ever find yourself minimizing your suffering because of how it compares to other suffering in the world, in your community, in your family? In this episode, Buffy talks about the insidious trap of comparative suffering - the way it stifles your story, makes small your grief, and in the end, really doesn’t help anybody. Listen to stories of apology, struggling creatives, and the way hidden suffering amplifies shame.
It’s possible to hold your grief while also staying present to the world’s suffering. Both don’t have to disintegrate, and both deserve proper attention. This week, feel your body, move your muscles, sweat, meditate, sleep, and unpack your suitcases of suffering with people you trust. Get clear so you can bring forth your medicine.

Between the rapid fire news cycle and the pandemic of 2020, we are square in the middle of collective resilience training. Buffy reframes the idea of resilience from “bouncing back” into a new picture of “bouncing forward.” Resilience isn’t really possible if we get too nostalgic about the way things were - we have to stick in the present tense, and to build and bounce forward from challenge and difficulty.
She invites space for the fits, the tantrums, and the grieving spaces before we bounce forward. In order practice resilience, we have to feel and acknowledge the weight of the loss and disruption. You’ll hear stories of interrupted music ritual, cow hearts, and more.
“Resilience is a newer, stronger place. It’s a repurposed place. It’s a place that is smartly designed to go with a new world or perspective that’s being offered. The world you didn't want, or expect to plan for, but the one that was handed to you anyway. We are building a new thing, and somehow, we must find the deep down trust in this process.”

Buffy extends the idea of“birth” out of the sole context of birthing a child, and into the world of birthing ideas, business, creativity, relationships, and family structures. In our creative lives, an incubation period is necessary, and how when we over-share, or share too soon, we jeopardize a vital, healthy birth. “When we let things marinate in the dark, they build blood, bone, and nutrients, just like a baby in the womb.”
Who are your midwives for your creativity? Where could you let ideas and beliefs ripen? You’ll hear stories of tomatoes, naysayers, and more.

Are you tired of hauling other people’s expectations? And, are they really their expectations, or just what you think they are? The topic of shattering the myth requires deep self-inquiry, especially when it comes to deciding what’s ours and what’s not ours to haul on the next leg of the journey. Most of life exists in the gray spaces, where we are waiting for the next move to become clear, or we are recovering from the move we just made. (Or both.) When so much time is spent in the gray areas, what can we do to stay anchored to what’s real and present? Buffy riffs on this and more through stories of gardening, The Pineapple Year, and presence.

In this episode, Buffy talks about how we can bring more consciousness into our lives through reimagining boundaries, the role of feedback, and the role our people play in this conversation. Your sense of boundary whispers its needs - and when you tend to them, the results reveal themselves in all corners of your life.

There is a season for everything, and in this episode, Buffy discusses the magic that happens when we recognize and name the season of life we are in. You have seasons where ideas and priorities live and die, where you focus on many things all at once, and times where you’re balanced and smooth. You have detailed times, and times of sweeping strokes. Times where you focus on other people, and times where you don’t. When you step into permission and acceptance of what you’re in the middle of, you cultivate a life of deep trust and presence.
She encourages a level of permission and acceptance in the exact season you are in. There are so many ways to build a good life, and you get to patch it together however it works for you.

Buffy talks about legacy and what becomes available when we shed layers of old stories.
Language that bypasses the reality of how hard things can be or feel is not helpful, and it can even be destructive. But if we can allow the grief of the darker times like this to be felt, and eventually turn our language and stories towards something hopeful, the stories we tell can become ones of hope and resurrection. You are the author, and you hold the pen.

In this episode, Buffy distinguishes permission as something that doesn’t necessarily have to come from outside, and the potency of giving oneself permission. We tend to think that other people aren’t as messy as we are in their own process - and of course, that makes us feel more alone and like we’re a bigger mess. She talks about the courage required to create a deep and felt allowance of being in the mess, the process, and the muddiness of your life. Ultimately, permission is in service to a beautiful layer of sweetness and softness.
In this episode, she references Erika Randall. The poem she shares at the end is called “I Worried” by Mary Oliver.

Buffy teases apart “The Ground Truth” from “The Official Truth,” and why it’s so important to get clear on our personal Ground Truth. She discusses the idea of a Whole Body Yes, how your inner circle can support and hold your truth, and how to distinguish when to share your Ground Truth and when to hold it close.

Buffy discusses releasing the podcast in the midst of a pandemic, and how taking life - and its problems - bite by bite can be just what we need to move forward. Bite-sized pieces are one of the simplest ideas we can stand on. And, while this soul medicine of bite-sized pieces is ideologically simple, Buffy grounds the practice in a variety of stories. Plus, she discusses the birth story of Things That Will Help podcast.
In this episode, Buffy references Brene Brown and Anne Lamott.
