There's a common objection to the Kalam Cosmological Argument that goes something like this: we never actually experience anything beginning to exist, we only ever experience new arrangements of pre-existing material. Hence, since we don't experience things really beginning to exist, the Kalam's causal principle is left unsupported. In this episode, I'm joined by Dr. Justin Mooney, a philosopher specializing in mereology (the study of part-whole relations) to discuss whether this objection has any merit.Link to the YouTube Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4HNs2HpPSfkOur Website: www.capturingchristianity.comOur Patreon: www.patreon.com/capturingchristianity

In this video, I respond to Cosmic Skeptic's video "Christianity's Biggest Problem."

Alex's original video: https://youtu.be/5KDnnp0sDkI

DESCRIPTION #1: The example Grandin cites comes from a book on this, Antoinio R. Damasio "Descartes' Error: Emotion, Reason and the Human Brain." And she also cites for the chapter as a whole "Freeman, W., and J.W. Watts. 1950. 'Psychosurgery in the Treatment of Mental Disorders and Intractable Pain.' Springfield, IL: Charles C. Thomas Publisher."

Also, just as a general rule, if you just google leucotomies and pain you'll find all kinds of stuff on this connection between leucotomy patients and people reporting reduced suffering. They did leucotomies in the 50s and 60s and they were way weird.

DESCRIPTION #2: “A hypothesis h suffers from probabilistic tension if and only if h is logically equivalent to some conjunctive hypothesis, h1& h2, such that either P(h1| h2) is [greatly lesser than] 1 or P(h2| h1) is [greatly lesser than] 1: that is, one conjunct of the hypothesis is very unlikely, conditioned on the other conjunct. Among other things, a hypothesis h that suffers from probabilistic tension will be very unlikely: since P(h) = P(h1& h2) = P(h1| h2) x P(h2) = P(h2| h1) x P(h1), it follows that if P(h1| h2) is [greatly lesser than] 1 or P(h2| h1) is [greatly lesser than] 1, then P(h) is [greatly lesser than] 1.” In our case, atheism represents h. If h is really the conjunction of Atheism & Evolution, as Alex assumes, then we can represent Atheism as h1 and Evolution as h2. Since the probability of Evolution on Atheism is very unlikely, the probability of h2 given h1 is also very unlikely. Following Collins, this leads us to conclude that the intrinsic probability of h is very unlikely.

DESCRIPTION #3: BOOKS: -Animal Suffering and the Darwinian Problem of Evil by John Schneider -God, Evolution and Animal Suffering by Bethany Sollereder -The Groaning of Creation: God, Evolution and the Problem of Evil by Christopher Southgate -Animal Suffering and the Problem of Evil by Nicola Hoggard Creegan -Thomism and the Problem of Animal Suffering by Kyle Keltz DISSERTATIONS: -The Problem of Evil and Animal Suffering: A Case Study by Faith Pawl -All Creation Groans: A Theodicy for Suffering Animals by Matthew Douglass OTHER RESOURCES: -The Problem of Evil by Peter van Inwagen (has a chapter on animal pain) -A Random-Based Theodicy for Evolutionary Evils by Josh Rasmussen and J. Wesling -Certain global theodicies: e.g. skeptical theism, multiverse models, etc.

DESCRIPTION #4: Why Didn't God Just Create Everyone in Heaven?? - https://youtu.be/kOmOLre6CyM

DESCRIPTION #5: http://dustincrummett.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/philosophy-of-religion-for-all-final-version-4-13-2019-1.pdf

DESCRIPTION #6: There aren't a lot of arguments for the conclusion that animals are essentially non-rational, and the ones that exist are not very good.

Special thanks to Wade Tisthammer (@Maverick Christian), Justin Mooney, Joe Schmid (@Majesty of Reason), Josh Rasmussen (@Worldview Design), Dustin Crummett, & Liz Jackson (@PhiLizophy) for providing helpful comments on earlier drafts of the script.

In this video, I explain why the Puddle Analogy against the Fine-tuning Argument for God fails (on multiple levels).

1: The likelihood principle says that “if some evidence is more likely on Hypothesis 1 than Hypothesis 2, then that evidence confirms Hypothesis 1 over Hypothesis 2.” Here’s a quick example: suppose you’re playing Poker and the guy to your left has been dealt a Royal Flush the last 5 hands. Being dealt 5 Royal Flushes in a row is likely on the hypothesis that he’s cheating and unlikely on the hypothesis that he’s not cheating. This fact therefore provides evidence that he’s cheating over not cheating. And btw, anybody actually in that situation would (without a doubt) suspect that he’s cheating.

2: See number three at this website: http://home.messiah.edu/~rcollins/Fine-tuning/FT.HTM

In this stream, I'm joined by Christian philosophers Tyler McNabb and Chad McIntosh to discuss their joint work on this question.

Concepts such as secularism, liberalism, science, and homosexuality are deeply rooted in a Christian seedbed.

This is the remastered and repaired audio from an exchange between Dr. Alvin Plantinga and Dr. Daniel Dennett. The audio was really bad in every iteration I found online, so I had my sound producer Sawyer Hudson doctor it up. The doctored version is still pretty bad but you can at least make out about 98% of what's said.

For a little background on this exchange, Dr. Plantinga was presenting a paper he wrote entitled, "Science and Religion, Where the Conflict Really Lies." Dr. Dennett was tasked with commenting on the paper. That's it. He was tasked with responding to the content. But unfortunately Dennett went way off topic and kind of went on a rant against religious belief. Because of this, to lay audiences it ended up sounding like a debate (even though it wasn't).

This discussion features two theists, Glenn Peoples and Randal Rauser, and two atheists, Lance Hannestad and Graham Seth Moore, discussing the conditional premise of the moral argument. All participants affirm the view that moral facts exist and are real, the disagreement is found over the grounding of these moral facts (natural vs supernatural).

The theists contend that God is required to ground moral facts, while the atheists contend the opposite: a satisfactory account of moral ontology can be given purely from a naturalistic perspective.

In this Theist/Atheist Discussion, we're tackling the argument from Hiddenness again but this time with a new group. This discussion features atheists and hosts of the Real Atheoloy podcast Justin Schieber and Ben Watkins. The theists are Josh Parikh and Blake Giunta.

The formulation of the argument being discussed is Schellenberg's most recent formulation:

(1) If a perfectly loving God exists, then there exists a God who is always open to a personal relationship with any finite person.

(2) If there exists a God who is always open to a personal relationship with any finite person, then no finite person is ever nonresistantly in a state of nonbelief in relation to the proposition that God exists.

(3) If a perfectly loving God exists, then no finite person is ever nonresistantly in a state of nonbelief in relation to the proposition that God exists. (from 1, 2)

(4) Some finite persons are or have been nonresistantly in a state of nonbelief in relation to the proposition that God exists.

(5) No perfectly loving God exists. (from 3, 4)

The Euthyphro Dilemma says that either God has reasons for his commands or He doesn’t. Take the second option. God has no reasons for His commands. Well then God’s commands are arbitrary–however, morality can’t be arbitrary. Now take the first option. God has reasons for His commands. Well then these reasons themselves are sufficient to give us moral obligations. No need for God. The Euthyphro Dilemma is meant to show that grounding morality in God is misguided. Jason argues that the Euthyphro Dilemma is sound, Matt argues it is not.

From the Big Bang to Homosexuality to the Problem of Evil, in this interview, Dr. Jerry Walls and I answer some of the hottest objections to Christianity. We couldn't cover everything, so we limited the objections to 5 of the most common we see and hear from culture. They aren't difficult; however, they are the kind of questions that ordinary church people need to really reflect on and think about. Here they are for reference:

  1. Evolution/Big Bang proves that Christianity is false. (6:30)
  2. People believe in God because of wish fulfillment. (12:50)
  3. The Bible seems like it was written by a bunch of uninformed peasants with no scientific knowledge at all. Why should we think that it’s reliable? (17:29)
  4. Christianity is against gay people. (22:05)
  5. Why do bad things happen to good people? (28:34)

Tyler McNabb is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy (Humanities) at Houston Baptist University. His specialization is in epistemology and philosophy of religion. In combining these two topics, his current focus has been on defending both proper functionalism and the project of Reformed Epistemology. Part 1 provides a bit of background information about Tyler and then goes into the intricacies of Reformed Epistemology.

This discussion features two Christian guests on the question of the doctrine and nature of hell. Does the Bible teach that hell is eternal separation from God, as is traditionally believed, or is hell something else altogether? Chris Date, an annihilationist, runs a website called Rethinking Hell where he defends a "conditional immortality" perspective. Jason Crowder is a traditionalist, he believes that hell is eternal.

We are discussing a positive case for Chris' view. He argues firstly that the Bible teaches we are not inherently immortal, immortality is a gift from God. And then secondly that the doctrine of the atonement (Christ's atoning work on the cross) makes better sense from an annihilationist point of view.

The topic of discussion is Alvin Plantinga's (in)famous Evolutionary Argument Against Naturalism. The argument roughly states that the probability our cognitive faculties are reliable given Naturalism & Evolution is low. Hence, the person that believes N&E has a defeater for all of their beliefs, including belief in N&E. Belief in N&E is therefore self-referentially incoherent and cannot rationally be accepted.

This is the fourth episode of a five-part podcast series on the historical case for Jesus’ resurrection. In this series I’m joined by Dr.’s Calum Miller and Max Baker-Hytch, both of whom are well qualified to speak on the subject.

Dr. Miller has been on the podcast before. He and I discussed the prior probability of the Resurrection. Super interesting exchange of ideas on that one, please go give it a listen if you haven’t. Dr. Miller graduated from the University of Oxford in 2015 with degrees in Medical Sciences (Neuroscience) and Medicine & Surgery. He’s currently teaching Ethics and Philosophy of Religion at the University of Oxford.

Dr. Baker-Hytch is actually new to the show. In 2010 he received his Masters in Ethics, Religion and Society from the University of Exeter and later went on to receive a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Oxford. Both of these guys are extremely intelligent and also well-versed in the evidence for the Resurrection. In Part 5 we talk about a book they’ve written together on the subject.

Part 4 starts a discussion about the various explanations on offer for the historical facts surrounding Jesus’ resurrection.

Did you know that Christianity is true? No, I mean like it’s actually true. It’s not just something that people believe. You know, I say that a lot, but today on the podcast we’re going to prove that. The next five episodes feature a discussion between myself, Dr. Calum Miller, and Dr. Max Baker-Hytch on the historical case for the Resurrection of Jesus.

Dr. Miller has been on the podcast before. He and I discussed the prior probability of the Resurrection. Super interesting exchange of ideas on that one, please go give it a listen if you haven’t. I was browsing Facebook the other day (as I often do) and came across a paper that looked really interesting. It was titled: "From a Cosmic Fine-Tuner to a Perfect Being." That caught my attention immediately because Fine-Tuning Arguments have traditionally been thought of as to only get us to a cosmic designer, not all the way to God (classically conceived). After reading the paper, I found it so interesting that I contacted the author, Justin Mooney, and invited him on for an interview. This podcast episode is the result!

In episode 19, Dr. Calum Miller and I complete our discussion of the Prior Probability of the Resurrection. Episode 18 laid a lot of groundwork for 19. Go listen to it if you haven't! In episode 19, we get a real understanding of what it takes to form an accurate prior probability for Jesus' Resurrection. We address several objections like, "dead people tend to stay dead, so in all likelihood, Jesus stayed dead too, " "miracles almost never happen, so the Resurrection probably didn’t happen," and "any naturalistic theory is going to be more probable than God raising Jesus from the dead." All are shown to be lacking.

Toward the end we address some of the concerns that historians like Mike Licona have against using Bayes Theorem in historical arguments.

Over the next two episodes, Dr. Calum Miller and I discuss the Prior Probability of the Resurrection. "What the heck is that?" you might be asking yourself. Skeptical arguments against the resurrection of Jesus, for example, the objection that dead people usually stay dead or that miracles never happen, are really arguments that Jesus’ resurrection is supremely unlikely before we look at any of the evidence. Episodes 18 and 19 take these objections to task. Is Jesus' Resurrection all that unlikely before we look at any evidence?

We’ve come to the end. Not the end of Capturing Christianity, but to the end of our 4-part series on the contingency argument. As mentioned, we’re wrapping up our 4-part series on the argument from contingency which in my mind is the strongest argument for God’s existence. Please go back and listen to the previous 3 parts. Don’t start at this one. It’s not going to make any sense. The argument from contingency has two stages. Stage 1 is about establishing that a necessary being exists, and Stage 2 argues that this necessary being is God. In this episode we wrap up our discussion of Stage 2, that the necessary foundation of reality is God. It’s not the universe, it’s God.

In this episode we discuss the problem of evil and its impact on Josh's perfect being hypothesis.

After we finished recording this 4-part series, I had the sense that this was going to be one of the most important things we’ve ever done. Actually, I had that sense before we even recorded. We’re in the middle of a 4-part series on the argument from contingency. It’s the absolute best argument for God’s existence. Well at least in the mind of one lowly photographer. I really like it. Makes a lot of sense, I know of very few good objections to it.

Each episode I mention that the contingency argument is split into two stages. Stage 1 is about establishing that a necessary being exists, while Stage 2 argues that this necessary being is God. The previous two episodes, 14 and 15, were devoted to Stage 1, and now we’re beginning our discussion of Stage 2. Sometimes Stage 2 is referred to as the “Gap Problem” in the literature. This conversation blew my mind in all sorts of ways. I’m sure you’ll know what I mean when we get there. Here is part 3 of our series on the argument from contingency, Stage 2 with Dr. Josh Rasmussen.

The argument from contingency is my favorite argument for God’s existence. Hands down. And to kick this series off, which is actually our first 4-parter, I’ve invited Dr. Josh Rasmussen. He is the foremost expert in the world on this argument. Over the past year that we’ve been corresponding, he’s also grown to be a great friend and mentor. I can’t say enough about him.

If I were still charismatic, I would say that I know in my heart of hearts (ie: my "knower") that this series will stand as some of the most important content we'll ever produce. It's that good! If you've ever doubted God's existence, this series is for you. If you want to learn more about what we discuss in Part 1, see the link below:

Episode 12 kicks off a short, 2-part series on Pascal's Wager. I remember hearing the wager years ago thinking to myself it sounded pretty reasonable. If Christianity is true, there's tons to gain, and if it's false, very little to lose. That seems to make it pretty rational to commit to God. It wasn't until years later that I heard good objections to the Wager--the kind of objections that really made me doubt its validity.

Fortunately for us, we have an expert on Pascal's Wager, Dr. Michael Rota, to help us think through this very interesting argument. He's written a book entitled Taking Pascal's Wager where he updates the argument and defends it against the biggest objections. If sound, Dr. Rota's version of the Wager makes it reasonable to commit to God even if you're just 50% sure of his existence, thus, lowering the bar for Natural Theology. Definitely give this one a listen!
