Valdemar”, and sets his story in a dreamlike urban city in the early 20th century. A world where the rich and pampered collide with the side-show carnival huckster and con-man. A world where the greedy and selfish fall victim to their own desires, with horrifying consequences. For no man, or woman, can truly escape death… Poe’s original story “The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar”, from which this audio play is inspired, was published in 1845. A work of horror fiction, it is also something of a hoax, as the story was originally published without claiming it was fictional, and readers believed the events described, of a man called Valdemar mesmerized at the point of death and upon coming out of the trance, devolving into a puddle of putrification. It was published simultaneously in “The American Review” and “Broadway Journal”, December 1845. Many readers thought the events to be true, until Poe admitted otherwise in his “Marginalia”. Elizabeth Barrett Browning wrote to Poe to commend him on his talent for “making horrible improbabilities seem near and familiar”. The most well-known film adaptation appears in Roger Corman’s “Tales of Terror” (1962) starring Vincent Price and Basil Rathbone. (There are going to be a few “Davids” in our brief re-cap, so get your score cards ready!)There is no record of David Poe’s birth, only of his death in 1742. He was a farmer and overseer of Parrish roads in Kidallan in County Cavan. It is possible (but there is no definite proof) that he was descended from the Dr. Leonard Poe who was the official physician for King James I and later for King Charles I.David Poe, who married a woman named Sarah, gave birth to a son called John (date unknown). John Poe (Edgar’s great-grandfather) married Jane McBride and immigrated to America sometime around 1749 or 1750. They lived briefly in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and then moved and settled in Baltimore, Maryland. David and Jane had 10 children. THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER is a famous short story, a work of American Gothic fiction, written by Edgar Allan Poe. The tale was published in 1839 in Burton’s Gentleman’s Magazine, and then, after a revision, included in the collection Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque. The story contains Poe’s poem “The Haunted Palace”, which has been published separately. The story has inspired tellings and adaptations stage, radio, television, opera, musical theater, and film. The best known film adaptation is Roger Corman’s HOUSE OF USHER (1960) written by Richard Mathewson and starring Vincent Price. This conversation with the late J. R. Lyston and me was totally unplanned. Completely impromptu. We had just recorded a Sherlock Holmes audio drama, and I suggested that we do an interview to talk about our many years of collaborating and acting together. At the time of this recording, we’d worked together for 36 years.
Well…we rambled. Went down rabbit holes. Talked over and interrupted each other… (J. R. wasn’t very good about using his hearing aids in his last years…)
And so, now, in 2023, it’s been about 40 years of working together. In plays, films, and audio drama. J. R. Lyston passed away on 8 August 2023. I’ve felt the loss heavily. I love him, and loved working with him dearly.
We present this unpublished “interview” as a tribute to J. R. and a way for me to share his own story, his journey in the theatre arts, and as a teacher. I’m not sure what folks will get from listening to the two of us babble and kibbutz, but for Baltimore theatre folk, many of the names and places should ring familiar bells.
I miss J.R. and I know I’ll miss him for the rest of what’s left in my life. When I think about future audio projects, I will still think to call him up and ask him to the studio. So many characters left to do…

Lyston as “Ernest Valdemar” and Mark Redfield as “Harlan Hurlock”.The production was written and directed by Mark Redfield, inspired by a story by Edgar Allan Poe.Original Music and Sound Design by Jennifer Rouse.Redfield takes his inspiration for the script from the Edgar Allan Poe short story “The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar”, and sets his story in a dreamlike urban city in the early 20th century. A world where the rich and pampered collide with the side-show carnival huckster and con-man. A world where the greedy and selfish fall victim to their own desires, with horrifying consequences. For no man, or woman, can truly escape death… Poe’s original story “The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar”, from which this audio play is inspired, was published in 1845. A work of horror fiction, it is also something of a hoax, as the story was originally published without claiming it was fictional, and readers believed the events described, of a man called Valdemar mesmerized at the point of death and upon coming out of the trance, devolving into a puddle of putrification. It was published simultaneously in “The American Review” and “Broadway Journal”, December 1845. Many readers thought the events to be true, until Poe admitted otherwise in his “Marginalia”. Elizabeth Barrett Browning wrote to Poe to commend him on his talent for “making horrible improbabilities seem near and familiar”. The most well-known film adaptation appears in Roger Corman’s “Tales of Terror” (1962) starring Vincent Price and Basil Rathbone. He was a farmer and overseer of Parrish roads in Kidallan in County Cavan. It is possible (but there is no definite proof) that he was descended from the Dr. Leonard Poe who was the official physician for King James I and later for King Charles I.David Poe, who married a woman named Sarah, gave birth to a son called John (date unknown). John Poe (Edgar’s great-grandfather) married Jane McBride and immigrated to America sometime around 1749 or 1750. They lived briefly in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and then moved and settled in Baltimore, Maryland. David and Jane had 10 children. ABOUT ACTOR DANIEL ROEBUCK Daniel Roebuck is a veteran actor who has worked in film and television since the 1980s, appearing on television shows such as "Matlock" (as Cliff Lewis) with Andy Griffith, "Nash Bridges" (as Rick Bettina), and "Lost" (as Dr. Arzt). He played Jay Leno in the acclaimed HBO movie "The Late Shift" and has guest starred on shows such as "Bones", "The King of Queens", "Glee" and "The Man in the High Castle".
Film work includes a wide variety of roles, including US Marshal Bob Biggs in "The Fugitive" and "U.S. Marshals", with Tommy Lee Jones. Horror and fantasy films include "Bubba Ho-Tep", and five movies by Rob Zombie, including "The Devil's Rejects".
I'm excited to be working with Dan again. We worked together in Larry Blamire's old dark house/murder mystery comedy movie "Dark and Stormy Night". And when I say "work together again", I don't just mean as a director.
It's been all about monsters, mobsters, and....MUNSTERS for Dan recently! On Monday October 18th it was announced that Dan will play Grandpa Munster in Rob Zombie's upcoming film "The Munsters"! Congrats, Dan! You're going to be great!

MICKEY MOUSE THEATRE ON THE AIR! 1938 “Snow White Day” Radio Show!
November 18th marks the birthdays of Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse!
November 18th was chosen as the anniversary date (by the late Disney historian and archivist Dave Smith) as that’s the date that “Steamboat Willie” (by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks) was released. It’s the first “talkie” Mickey Mouse cartoon from the Disney Brothers.
But Minnie and Mickie made their actual screen debut in “Plane Crazy” on 15 May, 1928. After the success of the sound “Steamboat Willie”, “Plane Crazy” was scored and vocal and sound effects were added, and the short was re-released in 1929!
And the first voice of Mickey Mouse in the films? Walt Disney!
I always wondered why Mickey didn’t have his own radio show. He, and all the characters created by Disney and voiced by such wonderful voice talents would have been a natural. Particularly as music was so important to all of Disney’s films, and rapid fire dialogue, character voices, and verbal humor was king in the movies and radio of the 1930s, 40s and 50s.
But Mickey and his friends were on the radio in the late 1930s. Perhaps radio, and Walt being primarily a visual storyteller, was just too much for the growing studio after they released their feature animated cartoon, “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”. Of course broadcasters we after Disney to do radio, and when the opportunity to help promote Snow White presented itself, Disney leapt at it, and put his all into it, like he did with everything.
Mickey Mouse Theatre On the Air was a short lived variety radio program that debuted on NBC in January, 1938. Remarkably well produced and performed, it moves swiftly and packs the short program with great familiar characters and songs. It’s a shame that Mickey Mouse Theater on the Air only lasted until May of 1938, with only about 20 shows produced, broadcast every Sunday afternoon. There are so many wonderful possibilities for Mickey and friends on the radio…it could have been somewhat groundbreaking had it been given the chance, much like The Muppet Show was when it debuted on television in the 1970s…
Here’s the second show, “Snow White Day”, originally broadcast on January 9th, 1938. With The Felix Mills Orchestra. Spike Jones conducting Donald Duck’s Swing Band. Clarence Nash as Donald Duck, Thelma Boardman as Minnie Mouse, Stuart Buchanan as Goofy, and the announcer is Joe Hiestand.

Poe's Poetic Principle - Three Poems On The Death Of A Beautiful Woman

In “The Philosophy of Composition" , an 1846 essay written by Edgar Allan Poe , he gives his theory about how good writers write, when they write well. He concludes that length, "unity of effect" and a logical method are important considerations for good writing. He also states that "the death... of a beautiful woman is unquestionably the most poetical topic in the world".
Ulalume is a poem written by Poe in 1847. Much like Poe's poems The Raven and Annabel Lee, Ulalume focuses on the narrator's loss of his beloved due to her death. Poe originally wrote the poem as an elocution piece and, as such, the poem is known for its focus on sound. It makes many allusions, especially to mythology.
The three central elements of Poe's philosophy of composition are:
Length. Poe believed that all literary works should be short. They should be read in a single sitting.
Method. Poe dismissed the notion of artistic intuition and argued that writing is methodical and analytical, not spontaneous.
Unity of effect. The essay states Poe's conviction that a work of fiction should be written only after the author has decided how it is to end and which emotional response, or "effect", he wishes to create, commonly known as the "unity of effect". In this essay, Poe logically decides on "the death... of a beautiful woman" as it "is unquestionably the most poetical topic in the world, and equally is it beyond doubt that the lips best suited for such topic are those of a bereaved lover."
Biographers and critics have suggested that Poe's obsession with this theme stems from the repeated loss of women throughout his life, including his mother Eliza Poe, Jane Stanard, his foster mother Frances Allan and, later, his wife Virginia.
In the essay, Poe traces the logical progression of his creation of "The Raven" as an attempt to compose "a poem that should suit at once the popular and the critical taste."
Even the term "Nevermore," he says, is based on logic following the "unity of effect." The sounds in the vowels in particular, he writes, have more meaning than the definition of the word itself. He had previously used words like "Lenore" for the same effect.
The Raven itself, Poe says, is meant to symbolize Mournful and Never-ending Remembrance. This may imply an autobiographical significance to the poem, alluding to the many people in Poe's life who had died.

Artist Michael Iampieri drew during live performances of theatre, dance, and music for more than 30 years. John C. Wilson’s book, “Drawing in the Dark: The Art of Michael Iampieri” celebrates the legacy of Baltimore Theatre Project’s visual historian, and showcases nearly 300 of Michael’s drawings. Paired with essays by former Theatre Project Directors, “Drawing in the Dark” reveals the intimate relationship between performance and audience. With quick, mindful strokes of his pencil, Micheal captured the precision of movement, depth of emotion, and verve of dramatic performance.
We present an audio recording of a panel discussion that was held at The Ivy Bookshop in Baltimore on Tuesday, August 10th, 2021. The speakers are author John C. Wilson, Theatre Project Board Member and Former Producing Director Anne Cantler-Fulwiler, and Theatre Project Founder Philip Arnoult. The moderator is Juanita Rockwell, writer and director, and founding director of Towson Univerity’s MFA in Theatre program. The event was held at the Ivy Bookshop’s spacious outdoor covered patio. A fierce thunder and rain storm moved in, but didn’t dissuade the large audience for attending the book-signing and panel discussion.
The Baltimore Theatre Project is celebrating its 50th Anniversary in 2021-2022. Founded in 1971 by Philip Arnoult, the theatre has been presenting theatre, music, dance, and performance art from around the world since its doors opened.

“The Fall of The City” by Archibald MacLeish Starring Orson Welles and Burgess Meredith
Fascism is a slippery word. It’s meaning changes and is nuanced with each incarnation. Fascist leaders copy other fascists , and use what is expedient to control the people.
We present the audio drama “the Fall of the City” by Archibald MacLeish. Produced by the Columbia Workshop for CBS Radio and presented on April 11th, 1937. This experimental radio play was a sensation when broadcast in the spring of 1937, and made an overnight radio star of 22 year-old Orson Welles. The New York Times selected “the Fall of the City” as one of the best radio broadcasts of 1937.

“The Curse of Black Aggie” tells one possible origin story of the famous Baltimore urban legend of the sinister, and sad, “Black Aggie”. A creepy tale of artists, stolen souls, abuse and vengeful spirits returning from the grave!
This conversation you are about to listen to, between Mike Flanagan and Mark Redfield, was conducted by phone while Flanagan was editing “Before I Wake” in 2015, and Flanagan was on pins and needles waiting on word that Stephen King would give his blessing for him to make “Gerald’s Game”.
Writer-director-editor Mike Flanagan made his first splash with horror films fans with his 2011 crowd-source-funded film “Absentia”. “Absentia” featured actors from Flanagan’s student-film days, and genre favorite Doug Jones, the star of “The Shape of Water” and “Pan’s Labyrinth” .
His real break-out film in the horror genre was “Oculus” from 2014.
Flanagan’s next major film was “Hush”, released by Netflix in 2016. This lead to writing and directing an adaptation of Stephen King’s “Gerald’s Game” for Netflix and, eventually, to the adaptation of Shirley Jackson’s novel “The Haunting of Hill House” for Netflix, released as a 10-episode film, in 2018. “The Haunting of Hill House” as won raves and accolades from fans and critics. Stephen King said, “ ‘The Haunting of Hill House’, revised and remodeled by Mike Flanagan. I don’t usually care for this kind of revisionism, but this is great. Close to a work of genius. I think Shirley Jackson would approve, but who knows for sure.”
His latest series on Netflix is "The Haunting Of Bly Manor".

Mark Redfield chats with Bob Crane biographer Carol M. Ford about her research and surprising discoveries writing “Bob Crane: The Definitive Biography”.
Popular and beloved actor Bob Crane was best known for the CBS comedy “Hogan’s Heroes”, which ran from 1965 to 1971. Crane began his entertainment career as a disc jockey and radio personality, enjoying great popularity on LA’s KNX radio station, before gaining greater fans as Col. Hogan on the CBS situation comedy.
Bob Crane was murdered in Scottsdale Arizona on June 29, 1978. As of this interview, Crane’s murder remains officially unsolved.
The interview was recorded at the Mid-Atlantic Nostalgia Convention, Hunt Valley, Maryland.

Baltimore Theatre Project was founded by Arnoult in 1971. Born during a tumultuous time of social change in America, Theatre Project grew to be the entry-way in America for thrilling experimental theatre from around the world. Under Arnoult’s guidance, theatre-goers were introduced to some of the planet’s most exciting voices in theatre, music and dance.
Artist and teacher Micheal Iampieri began attending performances at Baltimore Theatre Project from the beginning, and with his sketchbook and a few pencils and pens, drew lightning sketches in the dark almost every opening night for three decades.
John C. Wilson, joining Theatre Project in the mid-1970s, became friends with Michael, and in 2020, when Michael was confronted retirement due to declining health, was determined to created a book to pay tribute to and collect Michael’s wonderful illustrations, and create a singular history of Baltimore Theatre Project. The result is the book “Drawing in the Dark- The Art of Michael Iampieri”.

About Elana Gartner: Internationally produced and recognized playwright Elana Gartner is a native Brooklynite and a lifelong playwright, starting as early as first grade when her teacher allowed her to direct and act in the first play that she wrote "The Good Butterfly". That experience led her to believe that a career in playwriting was possible. During the corona virus crisis, she founded Four Walls Theater, a socially responsible theater company presenting new works online, using artists from around the nation.

About the play “Runtime Error”: Tal is trying to get a competitive internship when he approaches his college advisor and mentor for an introduction to the company. The famous Professor Carson is all too willing to make the introduction but for a terrible price. While hiding his experiences from everyone in his life, Tal tries to figure out what he could have done differently. A play inspired by the #MeToo movement and the Brett Kavanaugh hearings, this play explores similar themes for men and how they cope or don’t.

THE POE FAMILY COMES FROM IRELAND! It begins, as far back as can be reliably traced, to Edgar’s great-great-grandfather David Poe in the town of Dring, County Cavan, Ireland, about 75 miles north of Dublin. (There are going to be a few “Davids” in our brief re-cap, so get your score cards ready!)
There is no record of David Poe’s birth, only of his death in 1742. He was a farmer and overseer of Parrish roads in Kidallan in County Cavan. It is possible (but there is no definite proof) that he was descended from the Dr. Leonard Poe who was the official physician for King James I and later for King Charles I.
David Poe, who married a woman named Sarah, gave birth to a son called John (date unknown). John Poe (Edgar’s great-grandfather) married Jane McBride and immigrated to America sometime around 1749 or 1750. They lived briefly in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and then moved and settled in Baltimore, Maryland. David and Jane had 10 children. Their son David (Edgar’s grandfather—still with me?) was born in either 1742 or 1743 before they came to America.

Dennis Paoli is a screenwriter and playwright known for his work on horror films, specifically those directed by Stuart Gordon. He has written or co-written five of Gordon's films, including Re-Animator (1985) and From Beyond (1986). He has also collaborated with Gordon on the stage productions of Bleacher Bums, Re-Animator: The Musical, and "Nevermore: An Evening with Edgar Allan Poe", and on two episodes of the Showtime horror television series Masters of Horror.
Paoli serves as the coordinator of the Hunter College writing center. He established the Heidi Paoli Fund in honor of his late wife (d. 1987) to distribute donations to approved cancer charities from a variety of fundraising sources.

For three days on two screens, Bay Area Film Events presented 10 great fantasy films from the master stop-motion animator and special effects wizard Ray Harryhausen at the Balboa Theater in San Francisco.
For the three-day film festival, in between the screenings, there were presentations made by Connor Heaney, the Collections Manager for The Ray and Diana Harryhausen Foundation, and Ray and Diana’s daughter, Vanessa Harryhausen.
Vanessa and Connor spoke on many topics related to Vanessa’s father’s life and work. The talks, with audience question and answer sessions following, included a wide range of topics, including Vanessa’s experiences at home and on set with her father and his film work.
Mark Redfield was able to steal Vanessa and Connor away for a few minutes during the weekend festival to dig a little deeper into what the duo were up to in making preparations for Ray Harryhausen’s cenntenial in 2020. Including a grand museum exhibition planned to celebrate the life and legacy of the brilliant animator.

Mark Redfield performs Edgar Allan Poe’s famous tale of madness and murder THE TELL-TALE HEART.
THE TELL-TALE HEART was published in Boston in January, 1843, in the premiere issue of James Russell Lowell’s journal THE PIONEER: A LITERARY AND CRITICAL MAGAZINE. The story concerns an unnamed narrator who tries to convince the reader/listener of his sanity, while describing a gruesome murder he committed. (The victim was an old man with a filmy "vulture eye", as the narrator calls it.) The murder is carefully calculated, and the killer hides the body by dismembering it and hiding it under the floorboards. Ultimately the narrator's guilt manifests itself in the form of the sound of the old man's heart still beating under the floorboards. From beyond?? Or from the killer’s guilty imagination? Poe’s immortal story has been adapted into countless films and stage adaptations.
