In some of the modern solutions, that data is actually accessible and organized, meaning it doesn’t involve just tae images of the backups or data in the rawest possible form -- it has actually understood the data and stored it with a schema. On this edition of the Designing Enterprise Platforms podcast of Early Adopter Research (EAR), Dan Woods, the founder and principal analyst at Early Adopter Research speaks with Steven Mih, the CEO of a new company called Alluxio. Alluxio is a company that comes out of the AMPLab at UC Berkeley, which brought the world Spark and many other products for processing data at scale. The AMPLab has created a stack that has a variety of different components, and Alluxio was originally Tachyon and then now has become, in its commercial form, Alluxio. They spoke about an issue of separating the storage from compute engines from the actual compete engines themselves. In the cloud, companies have had increasingly amounts of possibilities of storing in object storage and then having a variety of different compute engines applied to that storage. But that leads to having storage in many places. Some of that storage may be on something like S3, some of it may be on premise, some of it may be in another cloud. The solution that Alluxio proposes to this challenge is what it calls storage orchestration.

Oracle has focused its innovation as much or more on licensing and audit practices as it has on technology. Oracle has created a lot of quality technology, but now it seems a lot of the company's energy is focused on maximizing the amount of money it gets from customers through licenses. The latest case of this involves the Java language which Oracle acquired in its acquisition of Sun Microsystems.
Java has a run time that is widely available and used for free most of the time powering many software programs. Oracle also sells a licensed version of the runtime with enhanced support and security patches. Oracle has long been in the business of using its leverage on software audits to encourage customers to buy more products. And it’s now starting to do audits aimed at promoting sales of its Java premium version.
