On this episode, I (Fr. Shawn) sat down with a good friend Zach Lambert, founding pastor at Restore Austin, to talk about sexuality and the church.We talked about sexual minorities in the church are not an issue to be managed but beloved people, images bearers of God. We discussed how to live in disagreement, how to create space to let others work things out, and how to hold our views with humility, reverence, love, and respect for one another. Then we talked about it’s hard to even talk about sexuality in the church, and addressed other dynamics involved in this topic. In the end, we landed on how this conversation doesn't have to be a source of anxiety or concern, but is actually a matter of good news for the church that should be an inclusive, loving, respectful, safe, and supportive place to encounter the love of God and learn to follow Jesus for everyone.

'Tis the season of maxed-out credit cards, indulgence, and the look of happiness—But for the Church, Advent is the time we get honest about our deepest wounds, pains, and brokenness, because the time of our salvation is drawing near. The time, according to Paul, is that liminal moment between the night being “far gone” and the sun breaking in. The darkness is departing more and more, and the light is breaking in. This great hope gives us a real opportunity to bear our wounds, to face our greatest fears, and to receive the healing of God's presence.
How do you "keep politics out of the Church" when the Church's most important announcement is about the "Kingdom of God"? The word "Kingdom" is a realm or space of real power, authority, and governance. What does it mean to belong to that in a world so confused power and dominated by partisan politics? And how do we live as those who belong to Jesus’ Kingdom? And is any of this Good News for us today?
Is it Advent yet? The day is coming when God will come and set things right. This Sunday, Deacon Ryan explores how we can live lives of wholeness and goodness anticipating the coming of the Lord.
In the resurrection, Jesus tells us, things will be different. The need to make a name for yourself or secure a reputation, are all put away when Christ makes us "children of God" and raises us to new life. That is a real hope to live on.
All Saints gives us a moment to embrace and celebrate a part of our worldview as Christians, that we join a holy family that stretches through time and space made in Christ. It’s kind of like a reunion of the eternal church, we realize we’re not alone in here, and we’re reminded just how weird our whole family is.
We believe in God. We don’t just say this in the creed, we believe that when we gather God is present and at work in us and in the world. God gave us the world he created, He gave us life, gives us direction, he gives healing and rescue, He gives new insight by revealing and correcting, He gives blessing and gives justice. We believe in a God who gives. It’s the mystery we call grace. But in a culture like ours, where everything is for sale, gifts have strings attached, everyone feels under-appreciated, and so many are in debt to something—the simple announcement that we are saved by a God who gives, is almost impossible to hear, let alone understand. But when God’s giving meets real human sin, it is salvation. About 30 years after the death and resurrection of Jesus, and in his old age, st. Paul wrote to the younger Timothy, about how his life was changed by the God who gives. What God has done in Paul’s life was almost unbelievable. God took the Church’s public enemy #1 and completely turned his life upside down--in an act of pure generosity and grace. In the next weeks we’ll be studying what Paul’s letters to Timothy in a series we’re calling “Grateful”, encountering the mystery of God’s grace and learning how to live on it.
If you were given all the power you needed right now, what would you do with it? We all know a lot of people who use power badly, we all wish we had more power to exercise in our own lives, and we all might think the way we would use power would be the best way to use it. The truth is, power is like an amplifier of our inner life. It takes whatever is in us and pours it out. This morning I want to learn from Paul’s letter to timothy about power, and ask, “can the grace of God transform us into the kinds of people that use our power well?”
What does your bank account say about the condition of your soul and what you love? Our world might say, “who needs God’s grace when you’ve got a pile of cash?” We live in a world where everything is given a cash value, even relationships, and meaning and purpose--things that are priceless. Time is money, you might even hear. Making money a master is really bad news for so many and does incredible damage to us, our world, and others. It is a wonderful tool, but that’s all that it is. The love of money wants more out of wealth than it really is, and the desire for more of it actually shapes us into certain kinds of people. Join us in this episode as consider what Paul says about the audacious generosity we participate in with Christ.

The Cost and Companionship of Following Jesus- Deacon Ryan Boettcher by Resurrection Anglican South Austin
Whether you believe in God or not, sometimes our lives function as if he isn’t really there, attentive to our big questions and needs. This is a really hard way to live, and a hard habit to change. This morning our readings lead us to this realization, that God has created humanity for a good reason, with intentions to live with us and lead us.
How does power work in the Kingdom of God? What kind of world is Jesus establishing under His reign and rule?
What took hold of an early church community was that the grace of God was actually bearing fruit, demonstrating a love in the Spirit, "Just as it is bearing fruit and growing in the whole world, so it has been bearing fruit among yourselves from the day you heard it and truly comprehended the grace of God." (Col 1:6)

There is a difference between saying our faith will hold us safely and actually putting the weight of our lives on that faith, putting it to use today. Too many of us go on believing without living a faith lived.
But isn’t life more than a few fish, another paycheck, a better relationship, or more admiration? What if the truly good life is hearing the call of Jesus and obeying? What if being saved isn’t getting what we want from God, or going to heaven when we die, or using Jesus for a vile of blood—what if salvation is a life “put out into the deep” with Jesus. Some of us may attend a few church services and never know we’re not actually a disciple of Jesus, because we’ve never learned to live with Jesus in our actual lives. Some may say we believe in Jesus but lack the readiness to act as if what we believe about Jesus is actually true. Even more may admire the Lord, but then ignore his call to obedience.

Christ is our guiding light, leading us into a new story of life, wholeness and forgiveness
Christ our great high priest means you have an advocate like none-other, who not only sympathizes with your brokenness but comes to heal it, purifies our sins by his death, gives us grace in our time of need, and makes our lives new.
Even now, Christ is working for your good and calling you into a joyful cooperation with his leading.
How do we know anything about God? Has he really spoken? This episode we kick off a new series in Hebrews that is considering how we have come to believe that Christ is greater than everything else in our lives. And he comes in power to invite us into the fullness of His own life.
We fool ourselves if we think we’ll get anywhere by learning the right Christian words but live godless lives? Does merely talking about faith indicate that a person really has it? This second week in our series we are exploring what it looks like to have lives planted in Jesus, trusting in his life-changing grace of, and how that transforms our whole life from the inside-out.
We aren't called to "survive" life but flourish, to enjoy a life of wholeness, even in challenging and complex seasons. In the Message, Eugene Peterson writes, "let our gardener, God, landscape you with the Word, making a salvation-garden of your life."
Paul's final chapter of Ephesians doesn’t allow us to escape into a peaceful ideal, but shows us that the church exists as a force of resistance against the status-quo of this “present darkness.” Does God want to bring about reconciliation, does God want to restore life, does He want to heal and forgive? Then the enemy will divide, tear-down, kill, injure, and shame. The Christian life is one characterized by this conflict.

What is the family supposed to be? One very sacred gift that God has given is the family, and for more than you might think. It is one of the most sacred places in which God we see and participate in welcome and goodness of God. The family is a space set aside for safety, self-sacrificing generosity, and service of others--all in the example of Christ.

In our Ephesians study we’ve been discovering more about what it means to become what we are, the church, and in chapter 4 Paul issues a bold exhortation for Christians to live holy lives. What is a “church” supposed to be? What does it look like? How do we live together in the church? These next weeks I want to invite you to wade slowly through this letter with us, and ask the Spirit of God to make of us what we are in Christ—a church, living life together in the goodness of God.
Who is Jesus? Was He divine or human? And why does that matter? The mystery of who Jesus is shapes everything we believe as Christians. Join us as we explore this great mystery together.
Who gets to say what Christians believe? Well the church does, and has throughout history. Not only that, but the Creeds give us a "map" to help us understand how to make sense of who God is. Join us as we explore the faith in the words of the Creeds.

Lauren leads the family ministry at Resurrection. She recently moved from South Carolina with her husband, Seth. While in South Carolina, Lauren earned her B.S. in Biblical Studies and M.A. in Early Childhood and Elementary Education and has taught Pre-K through 2nd grade. Why membership?
In Baptism we are made members of the household of God, joining his eternal and global Body, the Church. Membership gives us the opportunity to live out that baptismal reality in the local church, describing those practical ways that we can use our unique gifts and passions that make Rez tick.
Is membership just a set of rules?
Not at all. In the same way we wouldn't think of our baptismal covenant, or marriage vows, promises we make to friends as a "set of rules," but a description of the community we believe God is calling us to become.
What do I get out of membership?
Not your best question so far, but I think I know what you mean. You get each other. The gift of membership is a gift to a community, and to a neighborhood because it brings shape to a place of belonging. We want to create a safe space for people to encounter Life Together in the Goodness of God, and membership helps us bring intentionality and commitment to that vision. You also get to participate in annual meetings, our diocese, the province, and the global Anglican communion. Lastly, it's helpful for our clergy, staff, and ministry leaders to provide care and support for those we know are committed members of the community. Ok, that wasn't a bad question after all.
What is required to become a member?
The two week class at the start of our adult formation trimester, and signing off on our membership commitment.

Canon Lumanog is the Archbishop's Canon and Chief Operating Officer for the Anglican Church in North America, and oversees the overall function, development and administration of the Province. He is also a National Trustee of the Anglican Relief and Development Fund and a Chaplain with the United States Air Force Auxiliary Civil Air Patrol where he holds the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. We're kicking off a new series in the Pastoral letters of St. Paul to Timothy, called “Peace & Quiet,” where we are going to consider how the Gospel subverts the American Dream. Timothy was pastoring a first-century church, in the shadow of the Roman Empire and its culture, which had its way of doing things, its version of “peace & quiet” which came in sharp contrast to what Paul was writing to Timothy.

This week in our series, To Be A Disciple, a Journey in Luke, Jesus teaches his disciples to pray.
To Be A Disciple - The Good Samaritan - Fr. Shawn McCain by Resurrection Anglican South Austin
Galatians is the Christian Declaration of Independence. It tells us the meaning of true freedom - liberation from sin, death, and the devil - and what it is for. In Galatians 6, Paul tells us that we have been liberated to be of service to all, especially those within the household of faith. We have not been set free to gratify our own desires, but to seek the reconciliation of all things and all people to God in Christ.
In Jesus we have been set free to live by the power of the Holy Spirit. Listen in this week as Fr. Perry walks us through some of what that looks like.
At baptism we say, "you are sealed with the Holy Spirit, marked as Christ's own forever." What does it mean for our everyday lives to as children of God set free from the "present evil age"? Listen in as Fr. Shawn explores this news from Paul's letter to the church.
Most religious beliefs go something like: 1. Believe, 2. Do things, 3.You're made right. Jesus' invitation to us is radically different. In fact, it's really good news. You're set free to be changed

We’re in the 4th week of a series, “Heaven & Earth” where we have been studying the book of Hebrews. Specifically, we’ve been meditating on this one idea: Jesus, our high priest. Scripture tells us that Jesus, as our high priest, brings the presence of God to the people of God and brings the people before the face of God. God and his people, together.
Think about that. What does it mean that the Incarnate One, Jesus Christ, who walked around in a body on earth, now sits at the right hand of God the Father in heaven praying for us, working for our good, and directing the course of history? Even for Christians, this is a lot to imagine. But the real scandal is this: God is not somewhere else. We are in His presence. And Heaven is breaking in to South Austin, right now, because of Jesus Christ our high priest.
That’s what we’re considering this morning in Hebrews chapter 7:23-28.
The book of Hebrews is all about the priesthood of Jesus, who mediates the presence of God to the people of God and who brings the people before the face of God. What does it mean that the Incarnate Jesus, who walked around in a body on earth, is now in the throne room of God itself, bringing God to us and us to God? How might it change our lives in south Austin if we were aware that heaven is breaking in right here, right now because of Jesus Christ?
We are in a series called “First Fruits” where we have been rediscovering the generosity of God. Psalmist tells us, “The earth is the Lord’s and everything in it,” which means that all that we have, every last bit, is a gift from God entrusted to our care. So we’ve been asking, what does it mean to be good stewards, caretakers of these gifts from God. Last week Fr. Jonathan talked about how God invites us to be stewards of others—the poor, the “outsiders.” This week we see that God has given us a great gift and power in the use of words. They have the power to build up or destroy, to give life or to mislead.
We’re beginning a series titled “First Fruits” where we will be rediscovering the lavish generosity of God. As a young church, we know this personally as we prepare to launch our church, God has given us this beautiful gift of Resurrection South Austin. If you have an imagination for what a “church” really is—that is the Body of Christ in our neighborhood where God is setting things right—you realize that this gift is the first fruit of God’s goodness. If that wasn’t enough, now, you and I are made His stewards of it. Taking all of this in, it’s good for us to ask, how do we steward this gift according to the Lord’s desire? In the next weeks together, we’ll be looking at the different ways we can become good stewards of the gifts of God. To begin, this week, we’re going to explore the phrase “first fruits,” in scripture. We’re going to see that God invites us to prioritize Him in what we value, and ultimately recognize that our wealth is a gift from God that we are responsible to steward well. In other words, our money isn’t really ours—we are mere stewards of the wealth of God. So, this morning let’s ask, what does it look like to be stewards of the wealth of God?

We saw that worshipping God with our money and practicing acts of generosity frees up our hearts, so that we can truly lift them up to the Lord. This week the picture of God’s generosity in the book of James gets much bigger. We’re going to see that in Jesus, we have become God’s first fruits, and we’ll ask what it means to be good stewards of this gift? That’s where we are headed, let’s look at our reading in James 1.
