I'm on the hunt for garment testers in the following sizes: 30-32" and 50"-58" full bust circumference. If you're keen to test knit some garment patterns, give me a yell. I do all my testing on Slack, a free platform, and it works really well. You'll be knitting my draft patterns and checking for errors and improvements to fit so good attention to detail is essential. You don't have to be an expert knitter, but do need to be comfortable working to a deadline.

NEW SHAWL ELECTRA!
I was thrilled to release my latest pattern this week. It is a collaboration with the very gorgeous Debbie from Skein Queen in the UK and I was completely thrilled to design something in her Selkino, merino/silk, yarn.
Electra is a lovely long, large wrap with striking lace and squishy honeycomb panels. The construction is simple and you'll keep the same stitch count through the whole wrap!
I just can't wait to see what colours you'll choose for your Electra! Do tag me on instagram or pop a photo into the Ravelry group so we can all ooh and ahh over your yarn.

BOOTIES
I had a request for the bootie pattern that my mum Jude knits. I'll do my best to get Jude to write her pattern down :) but in the meantime, here are some similar (free) ones I've hunted out:
Pretty as a Rosebud - The booties are cute but I just love the bonnet and cardigan too!
Newborn Roll Brim Hat with Topknot - I prefer a bonnet or helmet to keep little heads warm but the booties look great and they're knitted in the round.
I chat in the podcast about how mum made simple changes to her booties to change the size, pattern and weight.

I'm back! Last weekend was amazing - it was a whirlwind time at Knit August Nights!

ZIDA
A luxurious two skein shawl, Zida is entertaining from start to finish. I love creating wiggly stitches and slipped stitches and the lace is simple and easy to memorise.

I'm chatting about my new design today, sharing a neat interview with you and drawing a winner for the gorgeous Zen Variations book from last week.
HULLABALOO COWL
I'm excited to release this new design - cowls have been a big part of my wardrobe this winter. They're easy to wear and soooooo cosy! There’s nothing quite like snuggling up in a squishy cowl to stay super cosy and ward off winter chills.
Hullabaloo is a long, chunky, reversible cowl that can be twisted twice around your neck to keep you snug as a bug, or worn as one long loop over your favourite jumper and jeans. Knitted in the round with aran-weight yarn, it knits up quickly so it’s finished in a flash.
The over-sized cables flow effortlessly from the rib borders and they’re easy to master and fun to create.

I'm so thrilled to finally be releasing this cute cardigan. I first made mine in 2013 and have lived in it. I think it's my most loved knit :)
My new version; Timely uses beautiful Daintree yarn from Skein; a merino/silk/bamboo blend. It's drapey and cool and perfect for in-between and summer weather. I've striped mine with a gloriously wild variegated yarn and a soft semi-solid neutral and the effect is stunning.

MOOD BOARD
I mentioned Tui birds - they are one of my favourites of the NZ native birds with such a glorious call.
I really like Hahnemühle Sketch & Note books - they're made from lovely art paper, come in packs of 2 and are very reasonable. I use the A4 size.
FINDING STRUCTURE FOR YOUR CAPSULE
The most well-known way to structure a capsule wardrobe is probably Project 333. Thirty three items of clothing for 3 months. It sounds like a neat way to roll with the changing seasons.
I'm drawn to the Sudoku method promoted by Colleen Hammond. Sixteen items that can all mix and match to create 10 coordinated outfits. Here's the basic template.

FINDING YOUR STYLE
I thoroughly enjoyed Carol Tuttle's course Live Your Truth and learned a lot about myself. I discovered I'm a type 3 and it was liberating to hear my embarrassing quirks are very normal traits of a type 3 ;)
Recently I've been following Stasia (Stay-sha) Savasuk from thriftmepretty.com. Her enthusiasm is infectious and I really enjoy her layered, bouncy but feminine style. She runs courses to help you find your style too.

It's been raining non-stop here this past week. My kids have been on holiday and while I've been tackling some cleaning they've been reading and making lots of things - we've got a new knitter in the house!
This week I'm chatting about swatching - do you swatch? It is definitely worth it if you want a predictable outcome but it took quite a while for me to get over my "fears" around swatching being a waste of yarn and the numbers not being accurate.
Joeli has a create tutorial about swatching in the round so you can reuse your swatch
I also use Jane Richmond's technique for swatching in the round
Did you know that different needles alter your gauge? Yep, it's true. I've written about it in this blog post.
I really enjoyed this programme about British Vogue Magazine this week. I'm not sure if you can watch it in your country but it's well worth a watch.

This week I have a co-host! My mum Jude is joining me on the podcast and talking about what's on her needles. She's excited about our yarn swap too and we chat a bit about that, new lambs being born and lots of other things ....
The photo is the wee sweater on Jude's needles - she's using some yarn I dyed recently and is making a tiny sweater for my youngest brother's "twinkle in his eye" - there's no sign of a baby or a partner but best to be prepared!

Hello! It's lovely to be back :)
I've had an eventful couple of weeks - full of yarn festivals, teaching, stashing new yarn and dyeing up a storm!
There's definitely a feeling of change and new adventures in the air. And, I think it's true the world over - just as we're heading into warmer weather, the Northern hemisphere is cooling down. Helen Stewart at Curious Handmade Podcast is feeling the same in the UK.
Oh my goodness KAN was a blast - there were around 250 people at Knit August Nights Knitting Retreat in Napier, NZ this year. I taught a class on Friday night and thoroughly enjoyed trying shawls on everyone in m stall for the rest of the weekend. I'll be back next year - will you join me?!

For the Sweater I used Skeinz organic merino/alpaca in the "porcelain" colourway and the hat is knitted in stunning Road to China Light in the "Carnelian" colourway from The Fibre Company. I'm about to cast on the wrap in a fabulous aubergine shade (#884) of Rowan Lima

I've been pondering the idea of making what we dream of. I discussed finding and enjoying our style in my recent Mini-Mag - it's all related :)

Caroline is an award winning felter and fibre artist living here in New Zealand.
We met by chance only to discover that she had made the most gorgeous garments in the Creative Fibre Fashion show that I was helping with backstage. When Caroline then won the show with her elegant "Salvation" red merino and silk felted evening dress I knew I had to make sure she chatted to us on the podcast!
Caroline had a background in sewing but these were her first felted garments. I was so impressed! What a brave move to try something new and then put it to a vote!
Caroline has been felting for about ten years, slowly learning her craft while she raised her young children. More recently she's embraced the title of "artist" and is enjoying the journey that her new role is taking her.

I'm going back to my roots! Get ready to follow the making of my first "mini-collection" created for a new outfit I've designed.
I've got a vision of a woman, comfortable and warm and dressed head to toe in natural fibres, deliciously earthy colours and a glorious combination of texture and gentle lace. She's scattering grain for her chickens and wandering through her vege patch, basket in hand thinking about what to pick for dinner this evening.

My sweater is being designed with the perfect Oatmeal yarn: Heritage NZ Alpaca DK (50% Organic Merino/50% Alpaca) from Skeinz in the "Porcelain" colourway.
The wrap will use Rowan Lima (84% Baby Alpaca/8% Merino/8% Nylon) in a glorious Aubergine shade Cusco #884.
My slightly slouchy hat uses Road to China Light from the Fibre Company in the "Carnelian" colourway (65% Baby Alpaca, 10% Cashmere/10% Camel/15% Silk).

It's just me this week - I've got lots of things to tell you about:
I've got my first stand at Woolfest Auckland! Will I see you there? Bring your Truly Myrtle shawls and hats, I'd love to see them. I'll have all my patterns printed into cute A5 booklets.
I'm sharing a booth with Rosewood Wool and we're hoping to create a friendly, comfortable space where you can have a bit of fun trying on shawls, feel gorgeous wool and have a chat. Rosewood are bringing their very comfy chair for people with weary legs and breastfeeding mums.
Join me on 11 June at Robyn Egge Yarns for my first Trunk show (so many firsts!). You'll be able to try on shawls & hats, get advice about shawl & hat knitting and purchase my patterns with Karen's gorgeous yarn.

Musings About Sharing our Making I had an interesting email this week from a listener wondering about the point of blogging about what we make and sharing it online. What is the point without a business? Does anyone read it anyway? Why bother?
I replied to her with some ideas about why I thought it was worthwhile. I talked about the changes in blogging and wondered if a "mini-blog" on instagram might serve as a better vehicle for meeting like-minded people.
It lead me to think about the general inefficiency of creativity and was reminded of my conversation with Rachael Laves about saving time and Seth Godin's view that we should blog every day because it's good for us. I also listened to an interview with Kevin Kelly, one of the co-founders of Wired Magazine this week and found his thoughts about creativity and productivity very interesting.
Kevin takes the view that creativity begets creativity and we benefit from making lots of little mistakes. That's essentially how evolution works. It's better than one huge mistake. We learn to think creatively and that's good for everyone.
I see the extension of our making to creatively sharing via blogs and social media as having lots of benefits. We are inspired, we inspired others, we learn about ourselves and we become part of communities that value us.

I've been trying and failing spectacularly at new creative challenges recently. I've found learning to throw clay really hard and it's left me feeling wobbly about my creativity. This podcast I'm sharing my thoughts and revelations about trying new things, making mistakes and determination.
My recent interview with Rachael Laves reminded me how inspired I am by fearless crafters who give things a go and are prepared to make mistakes and carry on regardless. I'm not sure I'm as brave as I thought but I'm doing my best to carry on anyway.

I'm excited to be bringing you the first in a my wandering series of interviews "Our Wardrobe Stories". This collection will be a medley of stories exploring the idea of a handmade wardrobe that I'll pop into the regular podcast series from time to time.
The series kicks off today with an interview from right on my doorstep, my mum Jude. Jude grew up in the 1950's in New Zealand and, as you will hear, she wore a handmade wardrobe. But, back then making your clothes wasn't a lifestyle choice, it was a lifestyle. And, she wasn't alone - most of the families that she knew lived that way too.
Join mum and I for a journey through her memories of growing up in handmade knitting and sewing.
