On this episode, we take a look at over 18 bills introduced during this latest State Legislative session to reform the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) as a result of development opponents weaponizing the process to block commercial and residential developments over the last several years. Thom wrote, directed and produced the 20 minute documentary regarding the quake that leveled Tehachapi in 1952. Chuck Schuyler from Tehachapi Boy Scout of America Troop3 stops by to talk about the upcoming September 11 event at the Tehachapi Rodeo Event Center. The Boy Scouts, American Legion Post 221 and several other groups will be holding a Flag Day retirement ceremony and 9/11 Remembrance event open to the public. The groups have collected more than 1,500 flags that are in need of retirement. Chuck explains the Boy Scouts, local Veterans and First Responders will be on hand to work together to honor those that lost their lives on September 11, 2001 and to properly retire flags of the United States. After seeing there is some confusion regarding multiple proposed initiatives in Kern County we thought we would share where to find information so you can make an informed decision regarding the sales tax measure in the City of Tehachapi.

We explain that the proposed sales tax measures do not overlap with any other proposed measures and the highest sales tax anyone would pay in the City of Tehachapi would be 8.25% if the measure passes. The current sales tax rate of 7.25% is the lowest in California and has been for several decades.

We get a chance to talk to two puppy raisers for Canine Companions from Tehachapi. Chris Estes and Madysen Rail stop by with their puppies in training Mathew and Waldo VI. Chris and Madysen volunteer their time along with their families raising puppies that will become service dogs for people with various needs and disabilities. Chris and Madysen share stories of how these dogs once they have completed training will go on to do amazing things with their matched human companion. CC is currently looking for additional puppy raisers to help get these dogs beginning at 8 weeks old through their next 18 months of puppy training before they are turned over to advanced training and eventual placement as a service dog. There is training to become future puppy raisers here in Tehachapi and they also have a mentor program to help get new puppy raisers through the initial steps of preparing a future service dog. STOL is Short Take Off & Landing competition for pilots. These special aircrafts will be coming to Tehachapi from around the U.S. and Canada to compete in this one day event to see who can take off in the shortest distance and land in the shortest distance. David Stenstrom is directing the next play at the Tehachapi Community Theatre called Moon Over Buffalo. We got a chance to talk to Ashley Sodergren from Make-A-Wish and find out how they impact the lives of children with critical illnesses by granting a wish for them. Ashley represents our area and she told us currently their are five children in Tehachapi that are waiting to have a wish granted. We talk about the positive impact a wish has on the child and family and she says research shows this can help in their recovery. We talk about different ways we as a community can help by both volunteer opportunities and financial. Nichole Hamblin from #loveTehachapi stops by the studio to talk about the upcoming events they are working on for Saturday April 23 in Tehachapi. She shares that volunteers from #loveTehachapi will be doing multiple things for the community between 10 AM - Noon & Noon-2 PM and they are looking for additional volunteers to help. Aaron Falk the President and CEO of the Kern Coummunity Foundation comes into the TehachaPod studios to talk to us about the upcoming Give Big Kern Day on May 3. He explains how the Kern Community Foundation helps nonprofits throughout the county and several here in Tehachapi. They also provide services to nonprofits to run more efficiently and assist in setting up nonprofits. He talked about how more than $800,000 was raised on Give Big Kern Day in 2021 and the money was distributed to 129 local nonprofits. Bob Souza and his wife Patty are the original wine makers dating back more than 20 years ago. They heard no from a lot of so called wine industry experts, that didn't stop them. They planted their award winning wines on their 20 acre Souza Family Vineyards ranch and after more than five years of perserverance they did it. Jana explains why its important to have this disscussion to help let mothers of new born babies that there are programs to help them and their child to safely surrender the child.
Anyone can surrender a new born baby within the first 72 hours of birth to any hospital or fire station with no questions asked if they like.

Military veterans Kevin Davey and Dean Peterson who are the Commander and Vice Commander for Tehachapi American Legion Post 221 talk to us about the 2021 Veterans Day celebration at Central Park. Kevin a U.S. Army veteran and Dean a U.S. Air Force veteran share the details on what to expect and why its important for the entire community to join in the event. There will be activities, displays, music, food and it will begin flag ceremonies and national anthem. CHP Officer Aaron Maurer with the local Mojave office joins us on TehachaPod to talk about driver safety. A renewed focus on speeding, seatbelts and distracted driving is a top priority for our local CHP due to the increase in fatal traffic accidents in our area. Officer Maurer explains how many drivers run out of patience while driving and do many unsafe things that cause collisions. The CHP Mojave office will be showing a zero tolerance for speeding on the highways and roadways. Over the past few days we had an Economic Development recruitment video aimed for In-N-Out Burger go viral. In what we had hoped would gain the attention of the In-N-Out executives went across the United States and abroad rather quickly. We did receive confirmation that the In-N-Out executives have seen the video which is what the goal was, to open a conversation about potentially opening a location in our area in the future. Adopt-A-Highway has had a steroid injection from the State of California, Joseph Reidhead from Caltrans District 9 stops by to explain. Joseph tells us the state has infused one billion dollars into the Clean California Program which includes a revamping of the Adopt-A-Highway program. The program is expanded to include on and off ramps and will pay nonprofit organizations who adopt a section of the highway $250 a month to do so and provide safety and cleanup gear. The Tehachapi area is in need of volunteer groups to adopt sections of Highway 202 and Highway 58 as many groups have slowed their participation during the pandemic. Jan Lemucchi from the Independent Living Center of Kern County (ILCKC) stops by the TehachaPod studios to share some valuable information regarding the work they do with members of the community with disabilities. ILCKC is a nonprofit organization that helps with a wide variety of services helping people with disabilities to live independently. A local 17 year old Bakersfield Liberty High School student Tatum De Montmorency (#TeamTatum) is in the middle of a fight with leukemia a blood/bone marrow cancer. Tatum has received blood and platelets from Houchin during her journey. The City of Tehachapi partners with HCBB and the Tehachapi Valley Recreation and Parks District every two months on a mobile blood drive. The Tehachapi Society of Pilots based at the Tehachapi Municipal Airport sponsor a Build-A-Plane program for local teens in their hangar. The program is approaching its third year of retired aviators mechanics and engineers mentoring local kids interested in the aviation field. They get hands on experience. I visited the Tehachapi Build A Plane Summer Program and watched the students working hands on with the tools building the plane. On Tuesday June 15, 2021 California's pandemic restrictions were lifted to open the local economies. Tehachapi celebrated with a large gathering of 55 small businesses in the downtown area to have a Grand Reopening Ribbon Cutting Ceremony. All 55 businesses and nonprofits cut ribbons at the same time in a huge ceremony attended by more than 150 people. TehachaPod breaks down some of the barriers that were faced during the pandemic for small businesses and how as a community we all worked together to overcome the obstacles.

TextMyGov is the latest communication tool the City of Tehachapi has added to make it easier for the public to talk to city hall. TextMyGov allows the public to report a non-emergent problem, concern or question to Tehachapi City Hall utilizing keywords via text message. Text Hi to (661) 441-3844 to opt-in and you will receive a greeting, then enter a keyword like pothole, you will then receive the pothole reporting form sent to you via text message. You don't have to go to the website, locate the request tracker or call city hall and go through an automated phone system unless you want to.

TehachaPod dives into the High Speed Rail problems that are arising due to the HSR attitude of "we heard your concerns but we don't care". For over a year the City of Tehachapi provided documentation to HSR showing serious problems that will have severe impacts to two neighborhoods and possibly the Adventist Health Tehachapi Valley Hospital. The revised EIR documents released this year failed to address the issues pointed out to the High Speed Rail Authority and their attitude when confronted in a meeting was we have done all we are legally supposed to do. The City of Tehachapi does not believe the HSR is working in good faith with small communities in California. We dive into the conversation. Stacey Peel a local Tehachapi realtor donated $1,000 to purchase additional gift cards to support the Tehachapi Small Business Loyalty Program. Stacey learned that the program was so successful that all of the $20 gift cards to local eateries were about to be distributed and she felt she could help the program to continue to benefit the local economy if she made the donation. We talk to her on TehachaPod and learn about her motivation to help the local mom and pop stores. To receive a $20 gift card you must bring in receipts from locally owned City of Tehachapi businesses totaling at least one hundred dollars.
Nichole Hamblin joins TehachaPod to talk about the April 24 neighborhood clean up project that #LoveTehachapi is doing. The clean up project is all volunteers and is looking for a few additional bodies to help out. The program came about after having to cancel a Christmas luncheon that has fed more than 300 senior citizens in past years. The project is open to the everyone in the community to donate certain food items that will be given to needy seniors and families who receive meals on wheels. Tehachapi Valley Recreation and Parks District Manager Corey Torres stopped by the TehachaPod studios to talk about the grant application they are working on to create a new park in Tehachapi. TVRPD is holding several on site presentation of the proposed park and wants the community to participate in the process. The money would be coming from a grant through a statewide bond that passed in California in 2018. Sacramento has nearly $400,000,000 to distribute to the creation of new parks and TVRPD would like to expand the park system with a small 2 acre park to help fill community recreation needs. www.TVRPD.org

We talk to Major Thomas "Jifko" Stuart who is the Air Show Director and to Helida Vanhoy who is the S.T.E.M. Coordinator for the Aerospace Valley Hybrid Air Show. The week long event starts on Monday Oct 5 and runs through Saturday Oct 10. The first four days are STEM related for elementary, middle and high school students. Friday & Saturday will feature an aerial parade like not seen before in our region. Aircraft expected to flyover Tehachapi and surrounding communities include the F-16, F-18, F-22, T-38, B-52, B-1, C-17, KC-46, KC-135, GIII, and the ER-2. Aircraft from the USAF and NASA will be in the air. Tehachapi can expect to see the parade on Friday Oct. 9 between 11 AM - 12:30 PM. Southern California Edison joins the TehachaPod crew to talk about Public Safety Power Shutoffs in the Tehachapi region. Cal Rossi from SCE provides an update on what SCE has done to improve the infrastructure for the greater Tehachapi area and what to expect. We recap last years events, the problems, our community voice and how SCE responded to the issues. Wildfire season is upon us year round in Tehachapi, SCE has been upgrading poles to composite and fire prevention treated materials plus adding insulated lines to further decrease the chance of starting a wildfire following an extreme wind event.
