Episode Overview Running a business as a military spouse means navigating PCS moves, deployments, and constant change. In this episode, we're ditching the hustle mentality and talking about what it really means to build a lifestyle business—one that adapts to YOUR life, not the other way around. Plus, our CEO, Moni Jefferson is sharing her exact weekly schedule structure and the game-changing approach to daily to-do lists that finally helped me feel "done."
In This Episode What is a Lifestyle Business? A business built around your desired lifestyle, values, and season of life—not just maximum revenue. The key difference: You're optimizing for flexibility and fulfillment rather than scaling at all costs.
Lifestyle Business Examples for Milspouses
My Weekly Themed Day Schedule
Why Themed Days Work Themed days reduce decision fatigue, create momentum through batching similar tasks, make it easier to defer non-urgent work, and protect your energy and focus.
The Daily To-Do List Strategy
The problem: We finish our work list and immediately add more tasks—we never feel "done."
The solution:
Key Takeaways * Your business should serve your life, not consume it—and that doesn't make you less ambitious, it makes you strategic * Themed days aren't about perfection; they're about reducing the mental load of constantly switching contexts * Finishing your to-do list should feel like an accomplishment, not an invitation to add five more things * Military life is unpredictable enough—your business structure should bring calm, not chaos We love how our listeners support the mission of AMSE and the Owning Up podcast. In this episode, We have an incredible conversation with the amazing Charlinda Scales. If you're looking for some serious entrepreneurial inspiration, you're in for a treat!
Charlinda is a powerhouse - she's the founder and CEO of Mutt Sauce, an Air Force reservist, author, and TEDx speaker. Oh, and did we mention she's doing all this while being a mom? Talk about Owning up!
We got into the nitty-gritty of balancing entrepreneurship with military service and motherhood. Charlinda kept it real, sharing her experiences of hitting "rock bottom" and how she bounced back. Her book, "Rock Bottom Has a Trampoline," dives even deeper into this - definitely adding it to our must-read list!
For all you networkers out there, Charlinda shared some golden advice on building authentic relationships. Spoiler alert: it's not about sliding into DMs asking for favors! She talked about the power of cultivating genuine connections over time, and how that's led to some amazing opportunities for her.
We also got the scoop on her latest venture - a huge commercial kitchen and incubator in Ohio. It's clear that Charlinda is all about lifting others up as she climbs!
Some key nuggets of wisdom from our chat: - Don't be afraid to pivot and adapt your business, especially when times get tough - It's okay (and sometimes necessary) to make your circle smaller and focus on what truly matters - Include your family in your entrepreneurial journey - they're part of your success too!

Join us for a special segment on the PBS National Memorial Day Concert, taking place from the west lawn of the Capitol on May 26th. This year marks the 35th anniversary of this profound event, which honors members of the military and their families with an evening of music and storytelling.
Among the highlights, we’ll feature a tribute to World War II, spotlighting U.S. Army veteran John T. “Jack” Moran, who fought in the Battle of the Bulge. This segment, featuring Bryan Cranston, will also commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day.
For the 4th year in a row, I’ve had the privilege of participating in this event and meeting legends who are making history. These interviews are a unique opportunity to ask questions you wouldn't normally get to ask.
In this episode, you'll hear from a few of my fellow military spouses and those who participated in the Zoom session with Bryan Cranston. Expect great stories, funny moments, and important perspectives that you won't want to miss.
As a child of veterans, with both parents having served, Bryan Cranston’s involvement in this event was an easy yes for him. I hope you enjoy this episode, and don't forget to tune in at 8 PM EST tonight for the official kickoff of the PBS National Memorial Day Concert!

In this episode, CEO & Founder Moni Jefferson shares part 2 of her recent experience taking the AMSE team on a retreat.
Moni was asked about gathering a group of chosen AMSE military spouses to come together to sit through mentorship with The Gathering of Giants. For two hours, the military spouses were mentored by experienced and successful entrepreneurs. This was an incredible feedback session for the spouses. Participants also received referrals, and the giants validated what the spouses were doing. After the two hours were over, there were still conversations happening and connections being made.
When you show people who you are, that’s when the magic happens because it’s more personal. This is why networking is so important.
There will be a price increase for the AMSE Professional Membership this year. We still offer a Free Membership for those interested.

In this episode, CEO & Founder Moni Jefferson shares her recent experience of taking the AMSE team on a retreat.
Years ago, Moni was inspired by seeing another CEO do this with her team and looked forward to the day when she would have a team to take on a retreat. She put the vision out there, and it finally happened! It was an excellent time for all that attended.
There was brainstorming, yoga, Escape Room, and more! As a leader, Moni understands that you must have the courage to listen to your team to grow. This retreat was a time of communication and connection.

‘Twas the Night Before Christmas - The AMSE Version by Audra Edwards 'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the Slack Not a message was stirring, not even a business fact; The stockings were hung on the website with care, In hopes that Moni Jefferson soon would be there; The entrepreneurs were nestled all snug in their beds; While visions of scalability danced in their heads; And the hubby in his lounge pants, and I in my Mrs. Claus cap, Had just settled our working brains for a long winter's nap, When out on the Remo there arose such a clatter, I sprang from my rolly chair to see what was the matter. Away to the open window I flew like a flash, Tore open the chat function and hoped it wouldn’t crash. The filter on the video of the pixelated snow, Gave the illusion of a Christmas party room to participants below, When what to my wondering eyes did appear, But a miniature keyboard and seven teammates, dear, With a beautiful leader so lively and quick, I knew in a moment she must be Monique. More rapid than eagles her team members came, And she whistled, and shouted, and called them by name: "Now, Michelle! now, Kathleen! now Amira and Audra! On, Caroline! on, Team! on, Anna and Selena! To the top of the website! to the top of the socials! Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!" As leaves that before the wild hurricane fly, When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky; So up to the channel the AMSE team flew With the community full of networking opportunities, and Moni too— And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the thread The brainstorming and planning from each entrepreneur’s head. As I minimized my window, and started to shut my system down, To the AMSE Bash Moni did come with a bound. She was dressed in festive fun, from her head to her feet, And her clothes were so jubilant, the Grinch’s mood she would beat; A bundle of resources she had flung on her back, And she looked like a peddler just opening her pack. Her eyes—how they twinkled! Her messy bun, how merry! Her cheeks were like roses, her lipstick the color of a cherry! Her ears were festooned with the shiniest hoops, And her Air Force Spouse pride was evident to the troops; The end of a pen she held tight in her teeth, And the ideas, they encircled her head like a wreath; She had a thoughtful face and an attitude of Hustle! That drove her to help other milspouse business owners thrive with mind, willpower, and muscle. She was confident and positive, a right jolly founding elf, And I smiled back when I saw her, in spite of myself; A wink of her eye and a twist of her head Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread; She spoke all the words, and went straight to her work, And filled all the virtual stockings; then turned with a jerk, And laying her finger aside of her nose, And giving a nod, away from the website she rose; She sprang to her keyboard, to her team gave a whistle, And away their fingers flew like the down of a thistle. But I heard her exclaim, ere she moved out of the camera’s sight— “Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night!”

In this episode, Moni shares what her role as a leader has been like for her over the past few years as the CEO of the AMSE Agency.
Part of being a CEO and building a team is hiring others. And supporting military spouse entrepreneurs is very important to her. However, liking someone as a person does not mean they are qualified to do the job you need effectively. And sometimes, a leader has to admit they were wrong about who they hired. This also means you’ll have to know when it’s time to let them go.
As a leader, creating an SOP - Systems Operating Procedures for each role in your company is essential. Have your processes written out, screenshots, and videos to review every aspect of the job. Take the time to know your team and when you need to, be ready to move a team member into another role if you see the individual could thrive there based on their many skills. Don’t be afraid to ask to see a portfolio of their work during the hiring process.

Welcome to the Meta Milspouse Roundtable Tour with Moni Jefferson
We are grateful for YOU, our listeners, partners, and sponsors.
In this episode, Moni talks about the first Meta Roundtable at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. This specific location is very transient, with spouses only there for nine to ten months at a time. AMSE is grateful for those who attended - including members of Meta - Haley Lickstein, Diana Doukas, and Maui Orozco, and members of The Center for Entrepreneurship - John Dearie and Katie Allen. We also had two chapter leaders from town to attend - Anna Larson and Andrea Singsaas. Plus, AMSE’s Operations Manager, Michelle Hughes.

Hello listeners! I’m Caroline Schafer, the Podcast Producer for the AMSE Agency.
As we look to the horizon for the first day of fall, we see the leaves begin to change. In some ways, each color represents a scent that the fall season gently offers us. Red is like a crisp candy apple. Brown is the caramel latte mixed with orange pumpkin. And yellow is the sun that will soon rise much later in the morning and set earlier in the evening. But, like the changing seasons, our businesses also come with change. AMSE has just the thing to walk with you wherever that change may be.

Hello listeners! I’m Caroline Schafer, the Podcast Producer for the AMSE Agency.
July is a time for celebrating the birth of American independence. And as military spouse entrepreneurs, we know what independence means. Besides being military spouses, independence is something our members have in common. Because of that independence, they took an idea and launched their own business. And that independence connects us all. So as we head into July, The AMSE Agency is here to celebrate your independence with you.

Welcome to the PCS Special Sunday Series with Moni Jefferson
We are grateful for YOU, our listeners, partners, and sponsors.
Moni chatted with a few other military spouse entrepreneurs who have experienced PCSing their business. They share tips on what you need to consider before PCSing your business.
Tip 1: Decide if you want to dissolve your business in the current state or start up in the state you will be moving to. Do your research and decide what works best for you. Some become a foreign entity, especially if you will be moving a lot or moving overseas for a time.
Tip 2: If you have a product-based business, consider having someone else manage it while you’re moving. And, it’s important to know the weight of your tools and equipment in case you are moving it with you.
Tip 3: Make sure you have a business bank account in your business name. And if you have multiple businesses, each one will need its own account.
Tip 4: Let your clients and team members know you’ll be moving. Don’t let fear hold you back from sharing that information.
Tip 5: Your priorities will shift during this time, so don’t be afraid to say no to things.
Tip 6: Take time to take care of yourself. We take care of everything and everyone, but we must take care of ourselves. We can’t pour from an empty cup, so fill yourself first. It’s not a weakness to ask for help.
Thanks to Sara Copp, Courtney Boyer, Marla Bautista, and Joanie Zipperer for joining Moni and sharing their journey with us.

Welcome back, listeners! It’s Season 4 of Owning Up!
First, we are grateful for YOU, our listeners, partners, and sponsors.
Now, let’s jump right in! This season, Moni wanted to bring on guests who are influencers in our community. They are dreamers, makers, doers, believers, bold and bravely creating the career of their dreams. This podcast is here to support military spouse business owners.
Moni talks with Karen Hetz, Chief Happiness Officer and founder of Kids’ Cake Boxes. She created Kids’ Cake Boxes during a time of need - the pandemic in 2020. During a virtual birthday party, her 6-year-old child asked her if they would also get cake. And that’s when the idea was born.
Karen designed personal size cake baking kits. The idea is that the host of the celebration can send a kit to each party member, and they can all enjoy their cakes together virtually. Although we don’t always have virtual parties now, Karen found a way to pivot with a brand overhaul and new marketing strategies.
It’s the perfect size cake to bake memories with your child. Kids’ Cake Boxes allow you quality time with your child in the heart of the home - the kitchen. The kitchen is where loving memories are made and enables you to embrace this quality screen-free time. You can bake memories that will last a lifetime.
Here are some other things you’ll hear in this episode:

Moni talks with Jamie Bennett, Human Resources Director of IFundWomen and an entrepreneur. She began her journey at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, then the Lehman Brothers, followed by the Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Greater Atlanta, a non-profit in the financial services industry. She also has twenty-five years of experience in human resources. IFundWomen is a partner with AMSE, and our relationship helps us serve and provide resources to help our members get all they can on their entrepreneurial journey.
Even though Jamie always wanted to be a businesswoman, she ran from her entrepreneurial journey. Raised as a military kid, she understands the service and sacrifice mindset of the military family. So it’s no surprise that she gives credit to that sacrifice when speaking about how she was able to attend Spellman College, where she received a B.A. in Economics. She received her MBA from CUNY - Baruch Colleg, The Zicklin School of Business, specializing in HR.
After working in human resources, she wanted to branch out and start her own business. Jamie continues to work in human resources because she loves serving the community. The employer-employee relationship has changed, and she loves bridging the gap between them.
For more information about Jamie and her company website, visit the IFundWomen website or find them on LinkedIn and Facebook.
