We  are so thrilled to welcome you to Take The Day Off, Season 8 of the Mother Honestly Podcast powered by Splendid Spoon.

Women have always taken on the larger share of the domestic and caregiving responsibilities at home - cooking, cleaning, laundry, childcare, and more. While these are absolutely important in keeping our households running smoothly and efficiently, we also know that women as a result of the uneven, repetitive and usually unrelenting household chores endure stress, anxiety, burnout, and depression. This podcast is about taking the day off from your personal or professional to-dos, and bringing the focus back to you, and on what matters most to your personal well-being, indulging in a creative pursuit, or simply getting some sleep.

Weekly we’ll check in with you to learn more about what you are doing to take the day off. In turn, we will arm you with the resources and know-how to take the day off, rejuvenate, and even better unplug and get the rest you deserve. We can only do this if we all do it — we must band together to show our young children and society at large that care matters.

In our first episode, we sit down with Nicole Centeno, Founder & CEO of Splendid Spoon to learn more about how she started the company, and the role nutrition, mental, and maternal wellbeing plays in how we show up for ourselves, our family, loved ones, and work. This is a must-listen as Nicole shares key steps to achieving success at home and in the workplace, and multiple take-the-day-off moments that have led to the improved wellbeing of her family and her business.

This podcast episode is available on iTunes, Spotify, Google Play, and wherever you listen to your podcast.

They talk with Blessing and Andrea about the great work that they both do at Superkin. They expand on how they started out, What inspired the birth of Superkin and how Superkin is helping companies attract and retain the most dynamic talent in today's workplace - Parents

Miriam built a career in New York retail leading operations and strategy for global brands like Coach, Louis Vuitton and J.Crew. For 11 years she worked with three awesome women that shaped her view of leadership... and inspired her to build a workplace that worked for everyone. While earning her MBA from The Wharton School, Miriam caught the startup bug and later left NY for San Francisco and Narvar. As a new mom, she spent 2 years running logistics partnerships and advocating for better lactation support in the office and for traveling employees.

Tara spent the first part of her career in New York and San Francisco, working at world-class brands like Louis Vuitton and Walmart, where she thrived in the art and science of retail. She joined Narvar, a SaaS technology platform, as its #4 employee where she saw the company scale globally in just under 5 years. Tara wrote the maternity leave policy as the first employee to have a baby at the company. It was this experience that really planted the seed of becoming an advocate for working parents. She co-led the Women at Narvar ERG and Life @ team, to further develop programming and culture at Narvar. She is energized by the power of connection — whether it’s brands, people or aligned missions. When working with a high-growth start-up or a large conglomerate, Tara brings an innovative thought process to projects and partnerships. She understands the complexities of teams, fast growing, best in class brands and that hiring the best people means nothing without culture.

Blessing Adesiyan and Andrea Mullan recognize how important the conversation around the unpaid labour of women/mothers is and how dire it is for actionable solutions to be found. Women are buckling under the immense physical and mental load of it all, especially mothers and not enough is being said or done to help lessen this burden on women. We spoke about this with Reshma Saujani, C.E.O and Founder, Girls Who Code. Reshma began her career as an attorney and activist. In 2010, she surged onto the political scene as the first Indian American woman to run for U.S. Congress. During the race, Reshma visited local schools and saw the gender gap in computing classes firsthand, which led her to start Girls Who Code. Reshma is also the author of Brave, Not Perfect–a movement rooted in her experience, TedTalk, book, and podcast encouraging women to live their bravest, fullest lives.

Blessing Adesiyan and Andrea Mullan recognize the importance of women's health on their careers. So many women suffer from silent diseases, especially women of color. We spoke with Nehal Farouky MD, co-founder, and president of NYC-based VIVA EVE, a fibroid treatment and women's health center. Nehal is a mom of two boys, she ran a private psychology practice in Egypt for more than a decade and is herself a fibroid survivor. Her mission is to reinvent how women's health is managed. Their focus on fibroids was what caught Blessing's attention. The statistics are staggering, demonstrating just how deeply Black and Brown women are affected by fibroids, who are 2-3 times more likely to have fibroids than white women.

Doctors believe it’s due to the following

  • There may be some genetic element that increases this tendency among African-American women.
  • One study suggested that greater overall lifetime stress might help trigger fibroids
  • Some evidence suggests environmental factors, such as diet or a history of abuse, increase the risk.
  • Another study pointed to a Vitamin D deficiency due to darker skin.

Tori Thain Gioia, Co-Founder and Co-CEO, was moved to launch Perelel alongside co-founders Dr. Banafsheh Bayati and Alex Taylor in 2019 when she learned that her daughter would be born with a cleft lip. She turned to her OB, Dr. Bayati, who found the defect was associated with a folic-acid deficiency early in her pregnancy that was not addressed with her one-size-fits-all prenatal vitamin. Tori uncovered an array of additional issues that can arise from relying on a generic prenatal vitamin and with her co-founder Alex Taylor and Dr. Bayati created Perelel to address this important category that had been previously overlooked. Prior to launching Perelel, Tori held roles in finance, strategy and investing at Olive & June, Honest Co., Carbon38, Crestview Partners and Lazard.

Alex Taylor, Co-Founder and Co-CEO, is a brand executive and has been a part of building consumer-beloved brands such as Free People and Clique Media’s Who What Wear, Byrdie, and MyDomaine. She first grew intimately aware of the lack of transparency and education available in the prenatal-vitamin market when she was pregnant with her first child and began customizing a prenatal regimen herself. Alongside her co-founders Victoria “Tori” Thain Gain and Dr. Banafsheh Bayati, they worked to create a new solution for parents that offered more than just a one-size-fits-all approach, to deliver appropriate doses of nutrients at the time they are needed most at each stage of pregnancy. Previously, Alex has served as president and executive editor-in-chief for Clique Media and has held in roles at Vogue, Rogers & Cowan, L'Oréal, Google and URBN’s Free People.

Alex and Tori join Kristen Hall, COO of Mother Honestly, to share how vital the right nutrients are to support women in their motherhood journey and the community they have built. Be sure to check out this great company for yourself and follow their journey @perelelhealth

Leah and her husband worked as side-hustling entrepreneurs cramming their passion projects in after the kids went to bed or on the weekend. Eventually both of them transitioned from side-hustlers to full-time, work-at-home entrepreneurs. Working for yourself is a gigantic blessing, but it isn’t without challenges. Leah and her husband both found ourselves feeling like we were always working, resentful, guilty, and burnt out at the end of the day. Then, Leah discovered the power of boundary setting. The more she talked to fellow entrepreneurs at all stages of their businesses and passion projects, the more she realized that boundary setting was a common thing that every single entrepreneur struggles with and needs. Leah created an online course, ‘Boundary Setting For Entrepreneurs’, to help improve your quality of life, ditch the guilt, make more money, and thrive as an entrepreneur.
On this week’s episode of the Mother Honestly Podcast, Leah Kwapis joins Kristen Hall, COO of Mother Honestly, to discuss the importance of boundary setting and how to balance dual careers as entrepreneurs. Leah joined the Mother Honestly team as the Social Engagement Director and opens up about social media management that can work for anyone. Lisa Mastela, founder and Chief Mama of Bumpin Blends, came up with a game changing product while 8 months pregnant. As a registered dietitian, even she was overwhelmed by not only the sheer number of nutritional needs to be met when making a tiny human (folate, and vitamin D, and omega-3s… oh my!), but how challenging it was to squeeze all these nutrients into her day. She created Bumpin Blends, a new company that creates custom, pre-blended smoothie cubes designed to support pregnancy and motherhood. Since their launch in January 2019, we've been able to build an excited, loyal following of customers, including Miranda Kerr, Amber Lancaster, and Sophie Jaffe, among other celebrities and influencers. Each blend is designed by nutritionists to support a particular symptom of pregnancy and motherhood (from pregnancy symptoms and milk supply to the fatigue/trouble sleeping/mood swings a mother of a toddler might feel). An on-the-go mom just needs to pour the cubes into her blender and blend - an absolutely perfect breakfast for your mom-readers.

Listen to this episode of the Mother Honestly podcast as Blessing and Lisa discuss the challenges of being pregnancy and post-partum and navigating proper nutrition through all stages. You can learn more about Bumpin Blends and try them yourself by visiting https://www.bumpinblends.com/who-we-are

Can you say mom goals? Melissa Evans is the Founder and CEO of Momeez Choice, running a family-owned company while raising four children.Melissa has always been passionate about working and caring for children. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a Master’s in Human Relations, which led to over 10 years of working in health and human services field. Her most cherished position was working with a non-profit organization for families whose loved ones were ill or had passed away. After many years of working with children and families, Melissa began a family of her own. After giving birth to her twin girls, she decided to stay at home full-time. Her family of four quickly became a family of six after having another sweet girl and then a baby boy! Today Melissa and family live in a small town in Connecticut where Melissa was born and raised.

When it came to health and wellness, Melissa had always been an enthusiast, but it was when first becoming pregnant that she began to take a harder look into health and nutrition and what she was putting into her body and essentially her baby’s. When Melissa’s daughter was a little older and became sick with strep and pneumonia, there was nothing she felt comfortable giving her to soothe her throat. Many throat lozenges are filled with artificial ingredients and can be a choking hazard for young children. The simple need to ease her daughter’s throat and desire to have a better-for-you option, led to the launch of Lolleez, organic throat soothing pops for kids! Now under Melissa’s parent company, Momeez Choice, are sibling brands Lolleez, organic throat soothing lollipops for kids and Tumeez, organic tummy soothing lollipops for kids. Both brands are effective, fun and delicious ways to feel better and make sick days a little less crummy. As Momeez Choice Founder, Melissa’s goal is to provide parents with simple solutions to simple problems – helping to reduce the overload of decisions parents make daily – especially during the stressful time of having a sick kid.

On this episode Blessing and Melissa dissect the ingredients, where to find her organic soothing pops around the country, and how she started this thriving business with kids without a business background. Melissa shares how she balances work and life, and what she hopes other moms can learn as they think about finding and living out their passion.

Do you know there are over 300 chemicals and additives in almost all mass-produced wine? As a mama, I love to unwind in the evenings with the hubby over a glass of wine. When we started hosting Mother Honestly Events, a good friend introduced me to Scout & Cellar and I just had to interview Sarah! Sarah is an attorney-turned-sommelier who has dedicated her life to taking the headaches out of great wine. It’s arguably the most prevalent drawback to drinking wine at all. Sarah is all-too familiar with this feeling.

Ironically, it started while she was studying to become a sommelier. What started as a glass of wine to accompany long nights of cramming would eventually materialize into an unbearable headache the next day. Sarah knew something was off. A single glass shouldn’t lead to pain of this magnitude. So she began doing some research of her own. She spoke with renowned naturopathic physicians, and she consulted with vintners. Eventually, she discovered the source of these headaches: the up-to 300 chemical additives imbued in almost all mass-produced wine. Yeah. 300. Crazy, right?

This is where the fun began. Once Sarah stumbled upon the truth about mass-produced wine, she promised to discover and deliver a cleaner, healthier, better option. “Chemicals belong in a swimming pool,” she’d say. “Wine should be as natural as possible.”Dive into today’s podcast and learn more about mom-ing and wine, how to create and start anything from scratch, and be sure to pick up a Scout and Cellar wine from a consultant close to you.

Do you know that after birth defect, drowning is the leading cause of death for children between 1-4. Water safety is important for all ages, but especially for toddlers. Young children can drown in as little as an inch or two of water, and it can happen within seconds, and quietly too. Water safety impacts EVERY FAMILY. All kids need to have the skills to be safe around water. The American Academy of Pediatrics recently revised their drowning prevention guidelines and now recommend starting children in swim lessons earlier than previously suggested.

On this episode, I sat down with Katie Lee, the first franchise owner of Goldfish Swim School who now owns 9 locations across the United States. Goldfish Swim School started in Michigan and now operates in 90 locations across the United States and Canada. One of the many reasons we partnered with Goldfish Swim School this month was to bring awareness to water safety because as a mother, this is super important to me, and we approach the summer months and you are getting ready to take the kids to the pool, beach or any other water bodies, I want you to put the safety of your babies first and that starts by teaching them a lifelong skill that can preserve their lives and health for years to come.

Katie and I not only talked about her past life working with IBM, marring Tommy Lee (not kidding), and how she gets so much done with help of course. Tune in to find out how and learn more about how water safety impacts EVERY FAMILY below.

W. "Wear a life jacket" - Realize that floaties, noodles and plastic inner tubes do NOT protect against drowning. They are created as water toys, not life-saving devices. U.S. Coast Guard approved life jackets can be worn while swimming or boating to keep you safe.
A. Act."Throw but don't go!" - If you see someone in trouble in the water, throw an item for them to grab onto but NEVER jump in yourself -- you could be putting both of you in danger!
T. Take Swim Lessons. "Swim lessons keep me safe" - Swim lessons are the best way to ensure you and your family stays safe and has the most fun while in the water.
E. Educate. "I’m up to speed on my swim skills" - Key to swim safety is knowing essential skills like treading water and rolling over to float and catch a breath. With education about swim safety, you’ll be prepared if something unexpected happens.
R. Follow the Rules. "I respect the rules!" - Pay attention to posted rules and signage -- listen to lifeguards, parents, coaches -- the rules, and adults in charge are there to keep everyone safe!

Through the end of May, anyone who snaps a W.A.T.E.R. safety selfie and uses the hashtag #WaterSafetyGSS will be entered to win a year of complimentary swim lessons, courtesy of Goldfish. For a list of Goldfish locations near you, please visit: www.goldfishswimschool.com.
