Lung cancer is the #1 cancer killer of women in the U.S. – in fact, every five minutes, a woman in the U.S. learns she has lung cancer. The truth is, anyone can get lung cancer, and no one deserves it. For the fifth year the American Lung Association’s LUNG FORCE is uniting lung cancer survivors and their loved ones across the country to stand together in an effort to defeat lung cancer during National Women’s Lung Health Week. It’s estimated that lung cancer will represent close to 1 in 4 female cancer deaths in 2019In the last 40 years, the rate of women dying from lung cancer has increased 79%Close to half of all women diagnosed with lung cancer will not even survive one year, and the five-year survival rate for women with lung cancer is only one in five.Smoking is the leading risk factor for lung cancer, but other causes include exposure to secondhand smoke, radon gas, air pollution and asbestos. LUNG FORCE, in partnership with CVS Health, has made significant inroads in the effort to defeat lung cancer over the past five years, including: Helped to secure a 69% increase in lung cancer research funding at the National Institutes of HealthSuccessfully advocated for Medicare coverage of lung cancer screening for 8 million high-risk adultsSuccessfully advocated to increase the legal age to purchase tobacco to 21 in 5 states and the District of Columbia While much has been done to enlighten the public about this disease, more help is needed to fight for innovations in medical research, better treatments and new methods of early detection for lung cancer. join Dr. Andrea McKee, Scientific Advisory Committee Member and Medical Spokesperson for the American Lung Association along with Adrina Meola, LUNG FORCE volunteer and advocate, and dedicated CVS Pharmacy employee.

Sometimes a story can be used as an escape from the troubles of the world, but other times a story acts as a beam of light, illuminating situations we are not as aware of otherwise. With Becoming the Talbot Sisters (HarperCollins/Thomas Nelson; May 1, 2018; $15.99), author Rachel Linden hopes to shed light on issues important to women around the world and encourage them to live what she describes as “every day brave.” “Every day brave is a simple concept but it’s not easy,” Linden explains. “It means standing with courage against life’s fear and challenges, no matter the circumstances. As women we can face tremendous challenges in our lives – in our careers, our family and romantic relationships, our roles as wives and mothers, sisters and daughters, in so many areas of life! Being every day brave takes guts, grit and a steadfast hope and determination!” Becoming the Talbot Sisters tells the story of estranged twin sisters living very different lives on opposite sides of the world who begin to rebuild their relationship and learn to support one another as they face challenges ranging from miscarriages to sexual assault to career woes. Readers are introduced to Waverly Talbot, a celebrity chef with her own successful home-entertaining television show. She seems to have the perfect life, yet she and her husband have never been able to realize the true desire of Waverly’s heart: to become a mother. One miscarriage after another has strained their relationship, and Waverly is at the point of despair, believing that she may never have a family of her own. Rachel also discusses a badass mentor in her life. You will be surprised at her answer.
A report from the Institute of Women’s Policy Research (IWPR) shows that women are steadily increasing their presence in the world of small-business ownership. In fact, the number of women-owned firms has grown 68 percent since 2007, compared with 47 percent for all businesses. But while women owned small businesses are on the increase, that doesn’t mean women who work in small businesses feel that they are paid the same as their male counterparts. In a recent survey by on small businesses, when it comes to the percent of people who think the small business industry achieves success when it comes to equal pay, females are more likely to say “no, not at all” or “no, but progress has been made.” Regardless of feelings on pay, both women and men can agree it is more fun working at a small business, according to the same survey. And 9 in 10 respondents feel like they have the opportunity to voice their ideas and opinions and have them heard and listened to by management. Matthew Owenby, senior vice president and chief human resources officer at Aflac, will discuss the results of the 2018 Aflac Small Business Employee Happiness Report and what it means to work at a small business vs the bigger places.

Combining little known historical nuggets and amusing personal recollections, DON’T MAKE ME PULL OVER! harkens back to this road tourism-crazy era when the whole family piled into the station wagon for endless hours of driving with only car games, magnetic chess, and Mad Libs to keep everyone occupied. Readers will relate to the hilarious anecdotes Ratay offers of families barely escaping vacation calamity: kids “forgotten” at rest stops, noogie-happy older brothers, gas tanks turning bone dry in the boonies, squabbling with siblings over drive-thru French fries, battling Space Invaders in the motel game room, Ratay recounts his family’s own highway misadventures in the 1970s when he — the youngest of four kids — staked his claim to the family’s car rear window ledge while his dad spewed PG-rated profanities while steering the family land yacht across thousands of miles, stopping only on rare occasions for bathroom breaks and burgers. Packed with history and fascinating tidbits, DON’T MAKE ME PULL OVER! reveals: The first motorist to cross America by car — on a bar room bet! — when roads barely existed The history of the station wagon and why carmakers still slap fake wood paneling on some vehicles Why the average Stuckey’s had as many as 50 billboards pointing to its location The location of the only Howard Johnson’s restaurant still (occasionally) in operation Why Pop Rocks, Bubble Yum, and Candy Cigarettes were the go-to road trip rations The location of the first waterpark

We all know and hear about what we SHOULD feed our young children, but parents everywhere know the struggle. The true story about what kids are really eating may surprise you. One landmark study soon to be published in the Journal of Nutrition now finds that more than one quarter of toddlers and preschoolers do not eat a single vegetable serving on a given day and of those who do, French fries are the most common. ü One in five infants’ diets are falling short on iron: instrumental for brain development and learning ü Three out of four toddlers and preschoolers consume too much sodium: putting them at risk for developing high blood pressure and heart disease later in life[1] ü Fewer than 25% of kids 0 to 48 months old get the recommended amount of vitamin D in their diet: needed for bone growth and development So what’s a parent to do? Don’t give up! It may take up to 10 tries for a new food to be accepted so keep offering those veggies[3]. Feed your babies a variety like pureed or mashed peas, sweet potatoes, carrots, butternut squash, and green beans. For toddlers, try finger foods as snacks to spark some kid-friendly creativity including red/green pepper slices, join pediatrician Ryan Carvalho, Vice President, Medical and Scientific Affairs at Gerber and Dr. Regan Bailey, Associate Professor at Purdue University for an eye-opening look at infant and toddler nutrition in this country, and solutions to help your child eat healthy and set the foundation for a healthy future.

Kate Reddy had it all: a nice home, two adorable kids, a good husband. Then her kids became teenagers (read: monsters). Richard, her husband, quit his job, taking up bicycling and therapeutic counseling: drinking green potions, dressing head to toe in Lycra, and spending his time?and their money?on his own therapy. Since Richard no longer sees a regular income as part of the path to enlightenment, it’s left to Kate to go back to work. Companies aren’t necessarily keen on hiring 49-year-old mothers, so Kate does what she must: knocks a few years off her age, hires a trainer, joins a Women Returners group, and prepares a new resume that has a shot at a literary prize for experimental fiction. When Kate manages to secure a job at the very hedge fund she founded, she finds herself in an impossible juggling act: proving herself (again) at work, dealing with teen drama, and trying to look after increasingly frail parents as the clock keeps ticking toward her 50th birthday. Surely it will all work out in the end. After all, how hard can it be? Hilarious and poignant, How Hard Can It Be? brings us the new adventures of Kate Reddy, the beleaguered heroine of Allison Pearson's groundbreaking New York Times bestseller I Don't Know How She Does I Allison Pearson’s first book, I Don’t’ Know How She Does It was a smash hit when it appeared in 2002. The story of a hedge fund manager who could juggle nine currencies in five time zones but wakes up at 1:37 am in a panic over the need to produce a homemade pie for her daughter’s school, Oprah called it “the national anthem for working mothers.”

Though raw yet relatable personal essays, aha moments and journaling prompts, Amber guides you to uncover the ways your unexplored emotions Wonder is what we’re born with; Worry is what we learn. ? Worry is the voice of our inner critic. It’s made up of the stories we inherited from family, society, and culture. ? Wonder is the voice of our truest truth. It urges us to listen to who we are, what we're capable of, and what we most desire. There are two kinds of worry – useful worry and toxic worry – and not all worry is bad. ? Worry is useful when you’re standing at the edge of a mountain or someone on Tinder is urging you to come over RIGHT AWAY. Worry says, “Danger, watch out, stay safe!” ? Worry is toxic when the ruminating thoughts (Am I good enough? What will they think of me?) become the story you tell yourself. Our feelings aren’t the problem; it’s our relationship to them. ? When we name our worry and talk to it, we create a distance between ourselves and the voice inside our head. This distance allows us to see the stories we tell ourselves objectively, and choose what we want to buy into. Hurricanes can be extremely unpredictable, as can be the recovery from the storms. Months have passed since Hurricane Maria struck Puerto Rico, and nearly 200,000 families and businesses — 16% of the island — remain without power. It is incumbent upon those living in areas at highest risk of being impacted by hurricanes to take storm preparations into their own hands. Taking small steps before the storm hits and knocks out your power can save a lot of headaches and heartache when it’s too late. Being prepared can reduce fear, anxiety, and losses that accompany disasters. Some important tips include stockpiling enough emergency supplies to last you, your loved ones and your pets for at least three days. The emergency kits should include bottled water, non-perishable food, prescription drugs you are taking, emergency radio and a DIY phone charger. Experts also advice to keep handy changes of underwear, comfortable shoes and clean wool socks. Our guest who will be available to discuss emergency planning methods will be Mark McGinnis, an authority in forensic meteorology and an expert in weather hazard planning and weather analysis. His depth of experience in weather preparedness as it relates to increasing safety and reducing associated losses is highly relevant to both home owners as well as local businesses. Mark will provide tips on how to best prepare yourself for the coming hurricane season and avoid the troubles that can accompany these storms.

PROOF OF GOD: Questions & Answers with Bernard Haisch, PhD: Q) What is your proof of God? I have four components of a proof of God: (1) The light of the Big Bang itself is at the top of the list. When Einstein formulated his general theory of relativity astronomers thought the universe was infinitely large and static. The expanding universe was a shock. So for all its problems the biblical creation scenario was more correct in this regard than that of the astronomers. The existence of the Big Bang as the origin of an expanding universe. Edwin Hubble discovered that the universe is expanding by measuring the red-shifts of galaxies. Assuming that the expansion is constant, it is easy to extrapolate this back in time to the moment the Big Bang occurred. This implies that at time T=0 the entire universe with all of its energy and matter, was no bigger than a point. What is that point? What made the Big Bang occur in the first place? Some scientists claim a quantum fluctuation of some sort occurred for no reason at all. They are claiming something came from nothing. But I propose that the first cause could just as easily be God. (2) Secondly there is the amazing fine-tuning of the laws of nature that most all astronomers believe needs to be explained. I have a list of these fine-tunings in my book, “The Purpose-Guided Universe.” There are at least ten laws of nature that seem to have values tailor-made for life. Some are: - The just right conditions for formation of carbon and oxygen. - The ratio of gravitational to the electric force (Coulomb). An electron and proton attract each other electrically and gravitationally. (3) How do you make a universe?

Life Lessons with author Christine Forner. Dissociation, Mindfulness, and Creative Meditations explores the potential of mindfulness and explains why this level of developmental human achievement is so precarious within traumatic stress, especially traumatic dissociation. Chapters discuss the connection and disconnection between mindfulness and dissociative disorders and highlight the importance of gently creating a mindfulness practice for traumatized individuals. Christine C. Forner, MSW, RSW, has more than 17 years of clinical experience working with individuals with trauma, PTSD, traumatic dissociation, and developmental trauma. Christine works in private practice at Associated Counselling in Calgary Alberta, Canada. 1. Would you say the book is generally for practitioners and or patients who have faced pain, suffering, unnecessary tragedy? 2. Talk about the extent of dissociation in our culture. All chapters in this book are sprinkled with fragments of Okawa’s philosophy and the core of his thoughts. Each chapter describes an important theme that can be expounded into a book. Such deep themes are described in relatively short messages. In this book you’ll ansi find The two directions of love — true love and false love; How we can overcome an inferiority complex through love; How we are connected to the source of the infinite wisdom and the great light of hope; New ways of thinking to achieve personal fulfillment; The truth about human life from the perspective of the great universe; “Using the methods to attain happiness described in this book, thousands, even tens of thousands of people have miraculously rebounded from life’s setbacks,” Okawa added. “Their voices of joy have echoed back to me over the years. “I hope you learn a spiritual perspective on life, about giving love, having faith, and the ways to live a victorious life,” he concluded. Ryuho Okawa is a renowned spiritual thinker, leader and author in Japan with a simple goal: to help people find true happiness and create a better world. To date, Okawa’s books have sold over 100 million copies worldwide and been translated into 27 languages. Founded in 1987, IRH Press is the publishing, broadcast, and film production division of Happy Science, a global spiritual movement established by Okawa to empower individuals to find purpose and share that happiness with their families, societies, and the world. In Cardiovascular Health, Jay N. Cohn MD., a renowned cardiologist describes the biological processes leading to heart and blood vessel disease. He challenges the conventional view that risk factors such as poor diet, and lack of exercise are the biggest culprits. Each of these widely-described risk factors is individually discussed and Dr. Cohn concludes that their role in affecting cardiovascular health is often overstated. He promotes a greater emphasis on an individual’s personal and largely inherited cardiovascular health by simple assessment of the function and structure of the arteries and heart. By identifying early disease likely to progress he advocates for early intervention, often with drug therapy, to slow disease progression and prevent symptoms of cardiovascular disease. He concludes that health care providers can better treat patients with medications that slow the biological processes that contribute to the development of artery and heart disease. These medications lower blood pressure and cholesterol, but their main effect is to slow progression of disease even in those whose blood pressure and cholesterol levels are not elevated. He describes a strategy for identifying and treating these early abnormalities before symptoms develop. Ultimately, early diagnosis and treatment, he argues, can contribute to better prevention and the slowing of cardiovascular disease. Jay N. Cohn, MD., is Professor of Medicine at the University of Minnesota Medical School and Director of the Rasmussen Center for Cardiovascular Disease Prevention. He was Director of the University’s Cardiovascular Division from 1974-96. He is widely recognized for his contributions to an understanding and management of hypertension, coronary artery disease, myocardial infarction and heart failure. He is the author of the scientific memoir “Saving Sam: Drugs, Race, and Discovering the Secrets of Heart Disease”.

It is inevitable - your child is going to run into people that don’t want the best for them. Bullies, toxic influences, or even mean authority figures. It’s important to teach your child to stand up for THEMSELVES, but also have compassion for others. By accepting individual differences, resisting peer pressure, and creating a personal code your child will not only be able to have strong relationships with their peers, but be able to handle difficult interactions with bullies. Dr. Kate Lund is a licensed clinical psychologist and performance coach with more than fifteen years of experience. She has specialized training in medical psychology from Shriners Hospital for Children in Boston, Massachusetts General Hospital, and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Why did you write this book? Why is resilience so important? Why is developing the courage to try and the courage to fail important ideas to discuss with your child? You mention a child develops courage by trying new things and pushing limits. Just as it is important to try, it is important to fail. Why? Confidence is an important concept here as confident children are more likely to believe in themselves and their abilities to move forward despite challenge than those children with less inherent confidence. Can you give some examples of how to foster confidence? Don’t let challenges define you, explain. You have a personal story as a child who lived fully with and beyond medical challenges, can you share more about this? How do you fostering an optimistic outlook while elping children to manage challenge? Does this help them to stand up for the underdog, walk away from conflict and see the possibilities beyond the challenge?
