On World Oceans Day (8 June 2022), we are very glad to bring you some exciting conversations with a team of experts who were participating at the TechCamp Kochi. TechCamp Kochi was a three-day program organised by the US Consulate General, Chennai, TechCamp in the US, and the Centre for Public Policy and Research. The camp was held from 19th to 21st May 2022.
The theme for this TechCamp was Tech4Oceans: Innovative Solutions for a Sustainable Future. On the sidelines of this, Research Matters caught up with the experts who were mentoring and part of this TechCamp.
We will bring you these conversations in two sessions. In the first session, our guests share what TechCamp is and provide an overview of it. In the second session, the guests engaged in a discussion sharing how the TechCamp was going about and the dimensions it addressed.

Dr R Venkatesan is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. He has served as a Senior Scientist G and Program Director at the National Institute of Ocean Technology, Ministry of Earth Sciences Chennai and served under the UNEP Regional Seas Programme in Srilanka.

The Infosys Prize endeavours to elevate the prestige of science and research in India and inspire young Indians to choose a vocation in research.
The award is given annually to honour outstanding achievements of contemporary researchers and scientists across six categories: Engineering and Computer Sciences, Humanities, Life Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, Physical Sciences, and Social Sciences, each carrying a prize of a gold medal, a citation and a purse of USD 100,000 (or its equivalent in Rupees). The prize purse is tax-free in the hands of winners in India.
This year the prizes were announced in December 2020.

They speak about the context of Professor Prachi Deshpande’s work in Humanities. They discuss what motivates her research in the field, as well as what interests Professor Akeel Bilgrami about her work. Then, they discuss the importance of research in Humanities, in the light of the crises that we are facing today, and the role of Humanities in our everyday lives.

Heat wave is a period of excessively hot weather or abnormally high temperatures caused when a system of high atmospheric pressure moves into a particular area, where in air from the high pressure system is pulled towards the ground, gets compressed and increases in temperature. This could last for two to three days and may be accompanied by high humidity. This phenomenon is usually seen in oceanic climate areas. Today, the 5th of June, marks the World Environment Day. Since 1974. this day has been observed to encourage worldwide awareness and action to protect our environment. A theme is picked to highlight a pressing concern for our environment and this year, it's “beating air pollution”. In India, the state of air quality is grim and most cities have hazardous pollutant levels. Statistics show that India has 14 of the 15 most polluted cities in the world!
