Ep.48 - The Future is Nigh Tim and Kyle make their third annual podcast industry predictions about the future of podcasting, podcasting companies, and content in 2021.

Episode at a Glance * Tim and Kyle share their 2021 Predictions * Since we hit 75-percent correct in 2019 AND 2020, these predictions are something you should pay attention too * Turns out that Tim and Kyle CAN see the future -- 2-years in a row!

Tim and Kyle's Predictions for 2021 Tim and Kyle are constantly making predictions about the Podcast Industry. Here are the predictions Tim and Kyle came up with before 2021:

  • 20 – (Tim) Amazon will be a big player and will be the next one to set up a paywall — (Kyle) Amazon enters the content war by challenging Spotify and Apple with “music, podcast, and audiobook” killer apps. [20.1 - Not only a paywall... but one of the first ones to monetize your podcast.]

  • 19 – (Kyle) Apple will start hosting podcast content and threaten indy podcast hosting companies. This will cause indy podcast companies to start buying out their competitors to form bigger hosting monsters and see the rise of New Podcast hosting companies appearing to support podcasts that have been kicked off of bigger platforms. [Podcast Pontifications with Evo Terra]

  • 18 – (Tim) Disney will set up a paywall for all of their content (including podcast content).

  • 17 – (Kyle) Localization and Local Podcast hubs will finally become a real thing. [Mathew Passy's interest in local podcast discovery]

  • 16 – (Tim) Virtual conferences will increase in attendance outpacing in-person events historically (Podfest Global will beat last year’s record) [Chris Krimitsos' Podfest Events]

  • 15 – (Kyle) Video podcasts will become synonymous with Audio podcasts. Meanwhile, Audio podcasters will have to adapt to the influx of new “video podcasters” but become pretentious “old guard” elitists.

  • 14 – (Tim) Clubhouse will be the next big thing (Like Anchor) when it opens up to Android but will fizzle out quickly unless it is bought out by a big player. (Kyle) Clubhouse will die a quick, unceremonious death this Summer when everyone stops caring.

  • 13 – (Kyle) This arrival of a new standards organization will flip IAB certification upon its ear because it will not be “good enough” for some. The result will create a few NEW standards that will renew the statistics war in podcasting. [Shake-Up at the Podcast Academy]

  • 12 – (Tim) Samson Q9U microphone will come out this year.

  • 11 – (Kyle) Adapt or die – The push for an “improved RSS feed” protocol will gain momentum and force the old RSS feed to finally be phased out.

  • 10 – (Kyle) The number of Spanish-speaking podcasts will overtake English-speaking podcasts in a total number of active shows. [#10.1 - A new iTunes like application will emerge for Spanish Speaking podcasts. #10.2 - A lot more Bi-Lingual Podcasts, and English to Spanish and Spanish to English translations of podcasts.]

  • 9 – (Tim) Apple Podcasts will hit 2-million total podcasts by November, (Kyle) forcing Apple to FINALLY fix their horrible search engine.

  • 8 – (Kyle) Tons of active podcasts will DIE and the number of ACTIVE podcasts on Apple Podcasts will fall BELOW 100,000 as the Content Wars put more and more active podcasts behind paywalls. [#8.1 - Tim thinks below 200,000]

  • 7 – (Kyle) Education-based podcasting will finally formalize to create new and better “podcast universities” where you can actually get a certification or even a degree just from listening to podcasts.

  • 6 – (Tim) President-elect Joe Biden will have a podcast similar to Roosevelt’s Fire Side Chats (that Tim will produce) as (Kyle) every politician in 2021 running in 2022 (or not) starts a podcast — ALL OF THEM!

  • 5 – (Kyle) Hollywood will use podcasting to continue to prototype new TV and Movie content creating a whole cadre of podcasters who become showrunners, writers, and producers for REAL production companies. Additionally, these podcasts will feature a tidal wave of known A/B/C level actors. [Actors in audio drama podcast The Oyster]

  • 4 – (Tim) The first space podcast based in outer space will be started by Space X. [#spaceforce]

  • 3 – (Kyle) The Content Wars heat up as media companies start buying up podcasters, podcast networks, podcast content, or any audio content not nailed down or copyrighted.

  • 2 – (Kyle) Content gets EVEN SHORTER to support smart speaker content exclusively and most big podcasters will have a Shorty version of their shows to adapt to this trend.

  • 1 – (Tim) Podwrecked will reach 75 episodes. [Recount: we actually hit #50 in 2020]

Ep.41 - Deep in the Heart of Podfest Kyle and Tim record live from the biggest virtual podcasting conference in the world - Podfest Global Summit 2020 - and tell you what we've learned so far.

Episode at a Glance * Kyle and Tim come to you LIVE from Podfest Global Summit 2020 * Only hours after we recorded this episode, Chris Krimitsos announced that they had broken the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS record for Largest Attendance for a Virtual Podcasting Conference in One Week (5,000+)! How's that for timing?! * Tim and Kyle get into the experience we've had over the past week.

What did we learn? * Tim shares how virtual events involve timezones and you can now meet people from other countries. * Kyle talks about how he likes the virtual better... and that he needs a hug. * Tim explores how different people are online and attending from their homes. * We get into how virtual connection makes people more vulnerable or feel safe because they can come and go at will. * Kyle gets into how to sift through the massive amount of content or trying to pick between information tracks. * Tim and Kyle explain the "un-conference" conference and how virtual applications can actually recreate the hallway-track experience. * Tim talks about mini-cons and how Podfest has become more than just a single-topic conference. * Tim teases out that Libsyn.com will be releasing a new interface called Libsyn 5 and their upcoming Beta Test. * Tim is looking forward Libsyn swag that may include a chocolate microphone one day. * Kyle asks you to go to the Schoolofpodcasting.com and ask Dave Jackson to be your coach as part of our help "Dave's Moving Expenses" non-campaign drive. * We know that our show will come out right as Podfest Global Summit is ending but you can still get a ticket to watch all the videos AND be a part of the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title until August 16th, 2020. * Kyle gives listener Cliff a very person "Call To Action" based on lessons learned from Podfest Global Conference. * Tim and Kyle share how podcasting is a common ground that makes very different people friends. * Kyle has a "Yoda-Kyle" moment and Tim thinks it needs to be a new segment to the show. * Tim makes not one, not two, but THREE predictions after attending this conference for a week (see below). * Because of all the predictions, Tim is now Tim "POD-stradamus" Brien!

Join us at Podfest Global Summit Simply stated, Podfest Global Summit is an extension of Podfest Multimedia Expo, one of the longest-running and tightest-knit communities of podcasters in the world! Podfest Expo is a community of people who are interested in and passionate about sharing their voice and message with the world through the powerful mediums of audio and video. We’re proud to unite as many people as possible to learn, get inspired, and grow better together. On top of the quality content and camaraderie, PODFEST has become famous for over the years, we are also attempting the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title for Largest Attendance for a Virtual Podcasting Conference!

Behind the Scenes * After we recorded this episode, we lost Tim's side of the conversation! * This is where Kyle learned that Squadcast.fm can recover web recordings using their "backup" feature. * They are not pretty and the audio is completely out-of-sync... but it is better than having to re-record everything. * Working with un-synced audio is very painful, but so is losing it all. So remember this: Two is one and one is none. Always have a backup. * Now you know!

He made this prediction a full 36-hours before they actual DID break the record! * #2 - Tim predicts that MORE conferences will embrace the virtual experience that MORE conferences will start to include a virtual connection to their LIVE events (hybrid conferences). * #3 - Tim "POD-stradamus" Brien predicts that everyone's podcast consumption patterns have changed and believes that a new pattern to consumption will emerge. This will require podcasters to rethink how their listener actually listens to your podcast.

About our guest -- Mathew Passy

Mathew Passy is a veteran podcaster and producer who as The Podcast Consultant helps brands, PR firms, small businesses and even individuals to use podcasts to connect with their target audience. Recently, Mathew founded Towncast, a platform aimed at creating a single location for local media and will be a featured speaker at this year's Podfest Multimedia Expo in Orlando, Florida in March 2020.

What did we learn?

  • You need to check your podcast feeds at least once a quarter
  • The only way to protect yourself from castjackers is to know when it's happened to you
  • Your podcast media host might not be much help if it happens to you
  • Not all castjacking events are malicious but all cases do impact your statistics
  • Castjacking is yet another area of podcasting where even lawyers are not sure what to do just yet

Ep.26 - LIVE Podcasting! What could go wrong? Tim and Kyle record a LIVE episode at the VAPODA October Meetup to show attendees how you can record a live podcast with only portable recording gear.

Episode at a Glance:

  • Recorded Live at the Howell Branch Library in Fredericksburg during the Virginia Podcasters Association (VAPODA.org) Meetup.
  • Tim and Kyle have been experimenting with how to produce a live show
  • Nate and Preston attended our October 2019 Meetup to see how the secret sauce is made
  • We recorded this BEFORE DC Podfest (dcpodfest.com) where Kyle is attended for the 4th year and Tim for the 3rd Year!
  • We spent an hour setting up our gear
  • We think that coil rolling of audio cables is a lost art
  • We go through what gear we use to take our podcast "LIVE"

What did we learn?

  • Live includes a lot of improv and you have to be good on your feet (or mouth)
  • Location can cause problems with sound (e.g. echo, room size, power, lighting)
  • Sound proofing on-the-fly can work but it does not completely remove microphone bleed.
  • Are microphones where air-gapped and the audio files used the double-header technique where we each record our own audio file and they are synced together in post-production.
  • Kyle is using the ZOOM H4N Pro and an Audio-Technia ATR2100 microphone.
  • Tim is using the ZOOM H5 (just to be bigger) and a Samson Q2U microphone.
  • Headphones help you hear your sound and hitting record on a portable recorder can make or break your live recording.

Ep.25 - Dude, Where's My Audience? Tim and Kyle review recent listener data and how it should motivate you to double-down on content research designed to build your audience.

Episode at a Glance:

  • U.S. podcast audiences have grown to 62 million listening weekly.
  • For the first time, more than half (51 percent) of the U.S. population has listened to a podcast, up from 44 percent last year.
  • 144 million people, or 20 million more people than just a year ago, have listened to a podcast.
  • With all these people now listening, what are you doing to make sure they are listening to YOU?

What did we learn?

  • Finding your Ideal Listener - When you figure out your topic, it leads you to online sources. Online sources lead you to people interested in that topic. These people? They are your potential future listeners.
  • Define Your Ideal Listener - Refine your ideal audience thinking down to some specific details.
  • Find Your Flock - Where there are two or more people interested in something, you can find something built around it (e.g. books, magazines, blogs, websites)
  • Sort Your Flocks - When you find a flock, evaluate each flock by lurking with a purpose and learning up-to-the-minute dialog about your flocks.
  • Expanding the Search- Choose active or recent discussions, statements, articles, or posts that best represent a point of view about your topic.
  • Qualifying your Sources - Content Walking - Active issues, complaints, controversies, problems, and interesting points of view you find.
  • Bird Watching with Purpose - Once you start reviewing, searching, collecting and visiting these flocks, my hope is that you will continue to revisit them over and over again until it becomes a habit.
  • Go Do the Work - At one point you have to just take what you have and start podcasting so that you can learn what your audience likes and doesn't like.

  • How long has the episode been out to the world?

Ep.21 - Salvaging Your Podcast with Dave Jackson Tim and Kyle talk with Hall-of-Fame Podcaster Dave Jackson (School of Podcasting) about strategies that can salvage your show when you put a bad podcast episode into the world.

Episode at a Glance:

  • Strategies for surviving that "Big Oops" after you hit publish on an episode.
  • What happens when you overwrite versus repost your fixed episode.
  • Learn the tacit knowledge that only comes from a podcaster who has thousands of episodes and millions of minutes on the microphone.

Where to find Dave Jackson:

  • School of Podcasting
  • Power of Podcasting
  • Podcast Rodeo Show
  • Ask the Podcast Coach
  • Binky and the Wiz (Coming Some Day!)

What did we learn?

  • There are a lot of ways to help you mitigate the damage of those mistakes.
  • You CAN recover from a bad episode.
  • Publishing an episode that did not include your voice.
  • Publishing an episode that only plays one of two voices on the recording.
  • Interviews - Didn't hit record.
  • Interviewee that fell asleep.
  • Cut and Paste from an old episode and publish the wrong one.
  • Don't listen with the ears of a podcaster but with the ears of a listener.
  • You can go overkill on recording gear.
  • You can go overkill on the number of audio file version saves.
  • Hoarding audio files for "just in case" is a real thing that all podcasters do.
  • The bare minimum for podcasting gear should be enough for a new podcaster to "get by" -- this means settling for a $60 microphone instead of going out and buying the AKG C-24 that was used in Pitch Perfect 3. (Pro Tip: The AKG C-24 is a collectors microphone for the low low price of $9K).
  • Some gear is just weird (with 10-feet of cable) and we just have to live with it.
  • Be careful when you name your podcast the same as a podwrecked podcast.
  • Subscribe to your show with Apple Podcasts/Overcast (on iPhone), and Pocket Casts/Castbox (on Android) to know when your episode goes live.
  • Google Play Music is NOT Google Podcasts - they are two separate things!
  • Not many people will want you to remove content from an interview (or remove a snippet).
  • Always ask in an interview "Is there anything in this interview you don't want out in the world?"
  • A single episode marked "Explicit" will drop you out of a lot of other countries unless you're not interested in having an audience in those countries.
  • When it comes to audio obsessions, remember that some folks in your audience are listening in the shower.

Questions to ask yourself if you Podwreck:

  • How long has the episode been out to the world?
  • How many people already have this episode?
  • Do I want everyone to get the corrected episode?
  • Do I care enough to put a re-post in my feed?
  • How long do you want to wait for Apple Podcasts to update from my change?
  • Did anyone even notice there was a problem?

Hall-of-Fame Dave-isms:

  • "Please subscribe to your own podcast!"
  • "Remember, the Internet writes in ink!"
  • "Nobody cares how the sausage is made. Just bring me content!"
  • "As podcasters, there is a big chunk of our hearts that wants to serve [our audience]."
  • "Please do not start your show off with an apology. Do it at the end where your super fans are!"

Elegant Solutions Notes:

  • If you don't care about Spotify and Google Play Music, you can repost with the exact named file.
  • Everyone who already downloaded it now as the "collectors edition" of that episode.
  • You can repost the audio file with the same name and just not worry about those who already have it.
  • You can post a NEW audio file and not worry about your subscribers getting a second version of the first file.
  • Apple Podcasts will show the new post but not remove the old one because it is only a mirror to your own feed.
  • It may take up to 24-hours to show any changes in the Apple Listing because it is only a snapshot of what is going on with your podcast in 24-hours (not minute-by-minute).
  • Apple Podcasts may never remove the listing of the first listing of your changed episode.

Industry Predictions:

  • Kyle thinks that Dave will one day soon create a podcast devoted to his Crazy Morning Zoo Crew Binky and the Wiz! This is a group of characters Dave introduced on episode #400 of the School of Podcasting and then resurfaced again on SOP episode #600. If you want to hear a special promo Dave did exclusively for Podwrecked, please listen to the very end of the episode! And PLEASE contact Dave Jackson and tell him you want this in the world!

  • There is a lot of chaotic movement going on between big podcast networks that some see as a Podcasting Bubble.
  • Only we looked up the definition of "bubble" and disagree.
  • We see a trend where when a big podcast network loses star players they start searching to supplement their content loses.
  • The same behavior happens in all other media too: Movie Studios, TV Networks, Radio Stations, and now... Podcasting!
  • Networks constantly poach other companies star players with better deals and creative opportunities.
  • If you sign on to a network that is influx you need to be wary of their actual motives and their demands on your content.

What did we learn?

  • Big podcast networks are going to be constantly changing, buying new content, and trying to one-up each other.
  • When these big podcast networks lose content creators, they will need to fill the void with something new -- this could mean you and your show.
  • Think of having a big podcast network interested in your contact like being called up in Major League Baseball.
  • It's exciting to have your creation called up form the podcasting "Minor Leagues" to the podcasting "Big Leagues".
  • Having a big podcast network pick your show for the "The Big Show" could be the best thing that ever happened to you and your podcast.
  • However, a big network could also put restrictions and creative limitations on your podcast.
  • If you get the call, you need to be wary of the demands they will have on your content.

  • Kyle thinks the Content Wars are coming! As these big podcast networks lose their star talent they are going to start lurking around the smaller networks and either buy their network or start poaching their talent.

Ep.19 - Why is Your Podcast Still Not Being Found? Tim and Kyle introduce you to the new SEO for podcasting called Podcast Discovery Optimization (PDO) and why it matters to how your podcast is found.

Episode at a Glance:

  • We celebrate our second year of doing Virginia Podcaster's Association (VAPODA) meetups at Germanna Community College -- it's a great place to find out what real podcast newbies are struggling with!
  • The Virginia Podcaster's Association (VAPODA) is a great place to find out what real podcast newbies are struggling with
  • We explore what happened when we looked up a new podcaster's podcast using Pocket Cast (Hint: We discover that different podcasts can have the same name!)
  • "Conversating" becomes the Word of the Day
  • We throw friend of the show Mathew Passy a whole lot of love!

What did we learn?

  • Welcome to Podcast Discovery Optimization (PDO)
  • This is the "what does my website look like on other browsers?" song.
  • Followed by the "what does my website look like on other phones?" B-side sleeper hit.
  • Now, it's "what does my podcast look like on all apps?"... or even the better question: "IS my podcast in all the apps?"
  • You have to look up your podcast because you can't fix what you don't know!
  • We thought a podcast name needed to be unique. Nope! Turns out you can have the EXACT SAME NAME in Apple Podcasts (iTunes)! We didn't know that was possible
  • We find out that not all podcasting statistics are created equal and not all hosts let you know where your listeners are coming from.
  • We know that not all hosts use IAB Standards but when you mix downloads with streaming with listens we can see why newbies get confused.

New Podcasting Terms: Which is your favorite?

  • Podcast Reliability Engineering (PRE)
  • Podcast Search Optimization (PSO)
  • Podcast Visualization Optimization (PVO)
  • Podcast Discovery Optimization (PDO)

PDO Recommendations for Podcasters:

    1. Stay away from a podcast with the same name because it's hard to find your podcast next to the others already
    1. Don't confuse your audience by being similar
    1. The answer to your show's name is in your content if you're looking for it
    1. Massage your message by making your name stand out from the static
    1. Search your own podcast on all the apps -- Yup! All of them!
    1. Do the work now, save the struggle for other fights not related to having to keep telling people which podcast is yours
    1. Go through all the apps and see if you're on your favorite apps
    1. If it gets crazy, get someone to help you with Podcast Discovery Optimization (PDO) if you're not showing up (like Mathew Passy - The Podcast Consultant)

Ep.16 - Ain't Nobody Got Time for Podcasts Under 12 Tim and Kyle introduce you to Kidcasts and how producing podcasts for children between 6-12 might be the opportunity you're overlooking.

Episode at a Glance:

  • Tim and Kyle explore the Kidcast podcasting landscape for a growing audience of younger listeners.
  • We touch on marketing to children and why it's a sensitive topic with regards to Kidcast monetization.
  • We end by talking about the potential Kids Education - Smart Kids

What did we learn?

  • Both Kyle and Tim agree that there are not enough Kidscasts.
  • Kyle talks about how Kidcasts are still a Blue Ocean when it comes to your podcast production strategy.
  • We find out how many Kidcasts are educational and well-produced to keep children engaged.
  • Kyle raves about Gimlet's Story Pirates and why that show's format and marketing strategy is something to pay attention to.
  • The myth that kids have short attention spans when it comes to kidcasts is just that -- a myth.
  • Sponsors can monetize a kidcast podcast, but it needs to be monitored by both producers and parents.
  • Disney Kidcasts have yet to gain traction but could become a strong competitor in the children podcasting space over the next year.
  • Tim points out that your first two (2) listens will be the parents. If it's good? Your next 100 listens will be super loyal kids!
  • Kyle and Tim both think that Kidcasts could be one of the genres that is a natural fit for podcasting paywalls (which is something that Disney is already considering).
  • Tim sees Disney as the high-quality mark in Kidcasts.
  • STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Kidcasts make up the majority of the market for children podcasting right now.
  • There are 1.6-million home-schooled students that could benefit from fitting remote teaching into their lesson plans by leveraging STEM Kidcast podcasts.
  • We touch briefly on where smart speakers fit into the Kidcast podcast equation.

Ep.15 - And Now... A Word from Our Sponsor Tim and Kyle explore the thinking behind Luminary's non-Tweet about podcast ads by exposing the realities behind an advertising-based monetization strategy.

Episode at a Glance:

  • Tim and Kyle questioning the reasons behind why Luminary tweeted: "Podcasts don’t need ads" and then apologized and deleted the tweet.
  • This leads to a conversation that begins with, "Well, is Luminary technically correct? The best kind of correct?"
  • We then weigh the pros and cons of having skip buttons in apps and if listeners are actually skipping most podcast ads.
  • Tim talks about how a podcast ad led him to buy a new product based on the host's recommendation -- and how it worked out well!

What did we learn?

  • Both Kyle and Tim agree that we are not against podcast ads, we just want better ads that take your audience into consideration.
  • Practice moderation. Too many ads -- no matter if they are host read or not -- is still too many ads.
  • If the advertising message or product matches the host AND the host's audience, then the ad actually works up to 25-percent of the time.
  • Host read ads appear to fit the content better because the host can personally connect the ad to the podcast.
  • However, automated ad placement is still tone-deaf by creating a jarring listening experience created by poor placement and content alignment (SNL even made fun of this fact).
  • The data shows that loyal followers will both trust a sponsor AND buy their product if they advertise with their favorite host.
  • Sponsors are still the best way to monetize a podcast, even if you only sponsor yourself.
  • Sorry, Luminary. Ads or no ads, paywalls for podcasting are still a bad idea (like we told you back in Episode #3).

Industry Quotes:

  • "The #2 radio advertiser in 2017 is now also the #2 podcast advertiser, according to data from Magellan’s podcast ad report for January. Magellan details all 110 ads the company found in the US top 2,000 Apple Podcasts trending chart. The top three: #3 Indeed, #2 Geico, and #1 ZipRecruiter. While this does show that US radio’s $15.9bn annual revenue is beginning to come to podcasting (which stands at a more meager $314m), none of radio’s other big advertisers are yet visible in the podcast top 15."
    ― Podnews.net
  • [A Sponsor] HAS to fit my audience. [That's why I charge $90 an episode]. How did I come up with this? I felt $50 wasn't work the extra effort and paperwork involved. $70 didn't seem enough as I have a niche audience. $120 I was worried that they may not get their money back. I settled at $90. I'm thinking in the future I might charge $100 as I can do that and still sleep, and look at myself in the mirror"

Ep.14 - I'll Take Podcasting for $100, Tim! Tim and Kyle discover which podcast categories have the most shows and analyze why that is and what it might mean to how you categorize your own podcast.

Episode at a Glance:

  • Tim and Kyle talk about the top three categories that have the most shows.
  • This leads to talking about why some categories are at the bottom of the list.
  • We then move into talking about the podcasts that produce the most episodes.
  • We finish off the show by talking about why your primary category is a factor in podcast discovery.

What did we learn?

  • The number one category in Apple Podcasts iTunes Directory is Religion and Spirituality: Christianity.
  • Choose a category that your audience will think your podcast is in, not the category you think works best for you.
  • The categories with the most podcasts are also producing the most content per show.
  • The categories at the bottom may not be crowded because there is not much demand for their content. However, they may also represent opportunities to dominate an underserved niche.
  • Many of the categories that have both the most podcasts and the most episodes per show are producing daily podcasts.
  • Just because a podcast category is crowded doesn't mean they are good shows nor does it mean they are all current shows either.
  • Your category helps your audience find you, but it is your content that keeps them listening regardless of how many shows there are.

Ep.13 - The Power of a Good Podcast Name Tim and Kyle ponder the struggle behind naming your podcast by pointing out what works, what doesn't, and why it might not matter.

Episode at a Glance:

  • Tim and Kyle talk about the three principles of naming a podcast: Be Original, Allow for Growth, and Don't Be too Abstract.
  • We explore the things that mess every podcaster up when they get to name their show.
  • We talk about how limiting Apple Podcasts search is right now and how that won't last forever.

What did we learn?

  • Pick a name - You can always change it later.
  • But do the work of trying to find a good name because it is the first thing your potential audience sees.
  • Google wasn't Google until it WAS Google - which means don't stress too much over this process.
  • You may get known for your podcast so make sure your name is something you can live with for a while.

Ep.10 - Overnight Success and Other Podcasting Myths Tim and Kyle take a deep dive into new data that exposes the overnight podcasting hit myth and reinforces the truth that podcasting requires hard work.

Episode at a Glance:

  • Tim and Kyle experiment recording the podcast from a local coffee shop and discover that people like to ask questions when you put microphones on the table.
  • We dig into the data within Dan Misener's article that supports why the podcasting long game strategy is STILL TRUE!
  • We explore what behaviors are causing so many podflashes, podfades, and podwrecks.

What did we learn?

  • There is no such thing as an overnight podcasting hit.
  • Shows that have big audiences tend to do "these things" and how "these things" are all about common sense.
  • Podcasters that do not stick with podcasting for at least 2-years do not have hit shows.
  • Producing at least 100 episodes is the milestone to becoming a podcaster - you haven't even begun podcasting until you hit episode 100 (for one podcast or multiple).
  • All the things that are hard in podcasting are still hard, but if you overcome them you have a good chance of gaining an audience.

Additional Reading:

  • Podcast success: a long game

Industry Predictions:

  • We will make it to the 50 episodes this year and we will make another 50 next year.
  • We are going to see a lot more people do that one and done episode. But that's ok because they are going to learn to appreciate what goes into producing a podcast and they will become sponsors of podcasters who they like.

Ep.9 -Is Google Podcasts too late or just in time? Tim and Kyle take a deep dive into Google's strategy for putting practically zero effort into marketing their new podcast application: Google Podcasts.

Episode at a Glance:

  • Tim and Kyle talk about Google's June 2018 announcement of their stand-alone podcasting app launch.
  • Do some thinking on why 55 percent of all US users and 86 percent of the world are on phones with the Android OS, but Google Podcasts only accounts for only 0.9 percent of total listens. Why?

What did we learn?

  • The biggest complaint about Google Podcasts is that it's an app and not native to Andriod OS like Apple Podcasts is to iOS.
  • Even if someone DOES download the app, does the app have everything you want in a podcast listening application? Only for those who don't know what podcasting is
  • Not everyone is in the Google Ecosystem... Yet! Google Podcasts is all about connecting people to Google Assistant and having a podcast player they can use in the car.
  • This is not an attempt by Google to put your favorite podcast app out of business. This is Google's on-ramp to podcasting if you've never listened to podcasts before.
  • This is Google's slow move towards the future where they move past directories and jump straight into audio indexing. Checkmate!

Additional Reading:

  • Why doesn’t anyone use Google Podcasts?
  • Closed-captioning is coming to Google Podcasts
  • Google app 9.0 preps Podcasts transcription, rounded Assistant, 9to5G shout-out
  • Why the new Google Podcasts app is a big deal: and why there are no auto-downloads
  • Making sense of Google's podcast flip-flop
  • Why is the Google Podcasts App Failing So Hard?

Predictions:

  • NEW -- Google Podcasts will eventually be native to Android, will be on every phone, and become a "must have" app for podcast listeners within the next three (3) years.
  • REVISIT -- #18 — We do think Google will double down on Audio Indexing in 2019, making audio content like podcasts searchable for the first time. It won’t be pretty, but it will get better in time and become part of their overall search tool.

Quotes:

  • "I think the power-listeners who criticize Google Podcasts for being too simple miss the point. It’s like a wine connoisseur criticizing a child for drinking Capri Sun." -- Daniel J. Lewis
  • "The new Podcasts app is but one tiny piece of a much grander goal." -- JR Raphael

Ep.8 - How True is True in True Crime podcasting? Tim and Kyle explore the claim that podcasting has sparked a new Golden Age of investigative journalism and do their own investigation into ethical storytelling standards.

Episode at a Glance:

  • Tim and Kyle explore the rise in True Crime podcasts
  • They start asking the question, "What is the difference between a journalist, reporter, commentator, and a podcaster?"
  • Then comes the thinking behind how and why podcasters need the same ethical education and standards as journalists.

What did we learn?

  • Podcasters should take a serious look at Ethical Storytelling and Reporting standards
  • Anyone producing a podcast about news, true crime, or non-fiction should obtain press credentials
  • We think that True Crime podcasters should start networking themselves together for safety and credibility.

  • Nobody is listening to these garbage podcasts anyway, so don't keep giving them more attention.
