The Priceless Podcast
A podcast about the topic of LGBT and spirituality. Listen to stories of people from all over Europe who are LGBT and have a religious background. Listen about their journeys of reconciling their faith and sexual orientation as well as their journey of self-discovery and acceptance. You will also hear about different countries and how it is for LGBT people to live there and what challenges they are facing and/or blessings enjoying.
It was a nice Journey, but it seems it has come to an end. Thank you all for listening and watching! Who knows, maybe one day there will be more episodes coming. For now I say goodbye.
In the third part of our synodal webinar series, we discuss vulnerabilites of LGBTI+ people and various ways how the church cares for them. In the recording of the webinar you can hear 4 powerful testimonies from people caring for those in need and sharing the Good News. 2 of the speakers have to protect their identity though, as their exposure might bring them and their work in danger in their countries of East Africa. The Synodal Project Group of the RCC WG
Members of the EF's Roman Catholic Church Working Group continue their work in support of visibility of LGBTI+ Catholics during the Synod, where Pope Francis is trying to bring the Church closer to the people. The Synodal Project Group of the RCC WG works together with global partners to collect Synodal experiences to ensure voices of LGBTI+ persons are being heard in this historic process in the global Catholic Church. For the spring of 2024 we have prepared a series of public webinars, where we want to talk with experts on selected topics such as the relevance of the Synodal Journey, the recognition of and blessings of same-sex couples (especially after Fiducia Supplicans), the unity of love and truth, and understanding the worldwide vulnerabilities of LGBTI+ people. In the first edition of the synodal webinar series on the 17th of February we had great speakers representing various experiences in the synod to discuss "The relevance of the Synodal process for LGBTI+ people". The audio recording of the initial part of the webinar will enable you to hear the views of the 3 speakers as well as the response from the activist. Each year there is an international conference happening, organised by the board and a local group. Every year it has been organised in another country. This year it will be in Varese, Italy, near Milan. This is an interview with a part of the organising team who tell us about the conference, what we can expect, who it is for and other things that give us a taste of what we can expect if we register for the conference 2024.

You probably heard about the situation in Uganda. People are being imprisoned, tortured and killed for being LGBTIQ+. I'm talking to Pastor Ram who is gay and a non-binary person, who had to flee Uganda to save their life. They are continuing their work of raising awareness and helping LGBTIQ+ homeless people, refugees in East-African countries. Ram is sharing his story, what is happening in Uganda and what they are doing to help LGBTIQ+ people. Have you ever asked your self if you suffer from spiritual or religious trauma? As dr. Jamie Marich says, if you asked your self, you probably have. Dr. Jamie Marich talks about what spiritual and religious trauma is, how you can recognise it and what you can do. We also talked about what parents and churches can do about it even if you can't afford therapy or you don't have access to someone who could help you. If you have experiences something like "conversion therapy" you are probably certain about your trauma, but what about the rest of us who still suffered as part of the institutions and faith communities? Microaggressions, as dr. Marich says, also cut deep, especially when they are repeated. Often the harm done by churches hasn't been done just by the institutions, but by our families too. Still, there is hope and healing is out there!

It is not easy to be gay, especially if you grew up during the 19 hundreds. Add a disability and discrimination doubles. Maybe it even more than doubles as even the LGBTIQ community often doesn't make it easier. Lothar grew up in a village in East Germany, the former GDR. He was sent to a boarding school for blind people. In those times, it was not only a problem to be gay and blind, but being Christian in the communist part of Germany. Lothar likes to tell stories, and the stories he tells will make you cry and laugh. At least that's what they did to me.

It is not easy to be gay, especially if you grew up during the 19 hundreds. Add a disability and discrimination doubles. Maybe it even more than doubles as even the LGBTIQ community often doesn't make it easier. Lothar grew up in a village in East Germany, the former GDR. Discrimination in the Balkans is still very high. This is true for many eastern-European countries. This is why it's often so hard to find people from the east as quests for the podcast. Fortunately, I came across Tanja, who is from Bosnia and Herzegovina. She is doing her PhD in Austria on the topic of LGBTIQ+ Catholics in Bosnia and Herzegovina. She is the first theologian in the SE European region doing her PhD on the LGBTIQ+ topic. In her study she came across a lot of pain and discrimination, but she still has hope for the future.

Many minorities, but also others (like women) know what it's like to experience disrespect. There are constantly new groups of people who go through that experience, even from those who went through the same hardships. Of course, behind that, there is often fear, misinformation and prejudice. It is not different for ARO-ACE people. Elin tells her story of figuring our her orientation when she was 37 years old. She tells us what she went through as a person, believer, pastor and how she found pride in her identities.

She’s for example trying to spread awareness that asexual people also should be included in the ban against conversion therapy.
Queers of the world on YouTube (as you know) has a few amazing interviews with asexual & aromantic people. For example one from Estonia and one who is from Poland, and Sweden. :)

@theyasminbenoit - Yasmine Benoit is an aroace activist from Great Britain who is making awareness for example by creating the hashtag on Instagram #thisiswhatasexuallookslike and being an activist working together with Stonewall UK. She’s for example trying to spread awareness that asexual people also should be included in the ban against conversion therapy.
Queers of the world on YouTube (as you know) has a few amazing interviews with asexual & aromantic people. For example one from Estonia and one who is from Poland, and Sweden. :)

Looking at the happenings within the Catholic Church it is sometimes so discouraging. It seems like it will never change. Although there are some steps forward, it seems like there are several steps backward. Talking to the first woman president of the Syondal council in Zurich was encouraging for several reasons. First of all to se a woman as the head of this council. Second, she is fighting for rights on several fronts, but she is also showing us that the church can be different and we can move away from the old ways of the hierarchical functioning of the RCC. She is a voice for the discriminated and a voice for a more just church with shared power.

One of them was Csongor Kozma who is the director of the Paulus Akademie. The Paulus Akademie is a Catholic centre for dialogue and yet its director is gay, with husband and daughter. I wanted to know how this works, what are the challenges and how accepted he is as an openly rainbow family man. As a theologian with a focus on Ethics, I wanted to know how much his identities influenced this choice. Well, Csongor is much more than this. To find out, take a look!

Fighting discrimination against LGBT+ people, we often forget that there is discrimination even within the LGBT+ spaces. There are people living on the intersectionality of different identities that are out of our vision. Sometimes it is important to stop and look around and identify is some being left out. There are topics we need to discuss and one of those is being LGBT+ and living with a disability. Adding to that, we are often oblivious to the challenges they are facing and how the Bible is often used to dehumanise them and treat them as not being whole. Their LGBT+ identity is adding to their impression that wholeness is even more out of their reach. What was it like to grow up with a disability in a faith community? What can faith communities and groups do to make a better job in including people with disability? How do we approach the topic of disability? How can we do better? These and other questions I discussed with Sian Jones.

HIV has been around for a while. Though we came a long way in fighting this virus and having it is not a "death sentence" anymore, we still live with the images of suffering and people dying of AIDS. The stigma and judgement of people who are HIV positive remains. My guest dealt with the topic of HIV for 15 years. When he contracted HIV, he knew he wanted to live what he preached.

Parts from the interview:
Being diagnosed with HIV was an interesting combination of different parts of my biography. I had been working on issues of HIV in my academic work in the past 15 years. While I studied, I was a visiting student in South Africa. I was a visiting student as part of a master program for Theology and HIV/AIDS. At that time the HIV epidemic was in South Africa at its top level. I did a lot of voluntary work for people with HIV. So that was my first exposure to the realities of the HIV epidemic. I ended up writing my masters dissertation on theology and HIV in South Africa. Somehow it was an irony that 10 years later I was diagnosed with HIV myself. This was the moment of truth for me. If I was really serious about fighting the stigma of HIV then it was now time to do that myself.
I had a wonderful social environment with my partner and a few friends with who I shared this news and who were really supportive. That helped me combined with the basic medical knowledge I had that HIV is not a life-threatening disease. When I started taking my medication, I realised that I had to take this medication for the rest of my life which was kind of weird to realise.
HIV made me much more aware of my body. Of having one and the vulnerability of my body. I realised that I wasn’t going to allow this virus to take over my body and to take over my well-being. The most difficult step was to disclose it to my immediate family, to my parents, to my siblings. I don’t really care what other people think about me having HIV or if they have issues with it, but I did care how my immediate family would take it.
I’m proud of deciding to stick to the principles, to the stuff I believe in. I do believe that living with HIV is not a problem medically speaking, but also kind of morally speaking. Living with HIV doesn’t say anything about who I am. But the way I decided how to live with HIV does say something about who I am.
In the end, I would love to see a world where no one is stigmatised for who they are or how they decide to live their lives. I want to see a world where no one is being judged for the decisions they made.
Some excerpts from the interview: I was diagnosed with HIV 5 years ago, which has been an interesting journey. I teach at the university here in Leeds. I teach issues in relation to gender and sexuality. The part of the Netherlands where I grew up was basically defined by conservative forms of Dutch Protestantism, Calvinism, the Dutch Reformed church. That defined my youth, my upbringing.

Being diagnosed with HIV was an interesting combination of different parts of my biography. I had been working on issues of HIV in my academic work in the past 15 years. While I studied, I was a visiting student in South Africa. I was a visiting student as part of a master program for Theology and HIV/AIDS. At that time the HIV epidemic was in South Africa at its top level. I did a lot of voluntary work for people with HIV. So that was my first exposure to the realities of the HIV epidemic. I ended up writing my masters dissertation on theology and HIV in South Africa. Somehow it was an irony that 10 years later I was diagnosed with HIV myself. This was the moment of truth for me. If I was really serious about fighting the stigma of HIV then it was now time to do that myself.
I had a wonderful social environment with my partner and a few friends with who I shared this news and who were really supportive. That helped me combined with the basic medical knowledge I had that HIV is not a life-threatening disease. When I started taking my medication, I realised that I had to take this medication for the rest of my life which was kind of weird to realise.
HIV made me much more aware of my body. Of having one and the vulnerability of my body. I realised that I wasn’t going to allow this virus to take over my body and to take over my well-being. The most difficult step was to disclose it to my immediate family, to my parents, to my siblings. I don’t really care what other people think about me having HIV or if they have issues with it, but I did care how my immediate family would take it.
Though there is still a lot of work to do, there has been progress in a big part of the world. These changes happened because of the effort of many people in our history and today. My guest is talking about how he became an activist and why he does it. He is talking about the challenges, but also about the progress he can see today.

The only LGBT organisation is giving its best to not only step up for LGBT+ rights, but also for other vulnerable groups. Armenia has been and remained a country deeply rooted in religion and influenced by the words of its leaders. In the midst of these challenges, New Generation is trying to break the taboos, educate the police, and informing the public about HIV, HIV prevention, and LGBT+ human rights. It seems like a long journey ahead, but one that some Armenians like Arman are willing to take.

Many of us living in Europe fight for the rights of LGBT+ people and we see the problems and discrimination, but we don't really think about being prosecuted. Poland wasn't a leading country in LGBT+ rights, but it wasn't this bad either. A populist government made it possible to scapegoat a minority that managed to make progress. For many of them, it seems like it was for nothing. What does one do when the church and government turn against them? When they make use of a law that was intended to protect minority religions? How does someone keep their hopes up when they are threatened by being locked up in a prison or mental hospital for doing an LGBT+ mass (Chruch service)?

Last week we had the opportunity to listen more about the Theory of Queer Theology. Kerstin Soelderblom told us about her view on what it means and how it can be used to reinterpret some texts as an encouragement for the LGBT+ community. Many of us experienced how the Bible can be used against us. This has caused a lot of pain and suffering. Not only to the LGBT+ but also other groups of people. Kerstin has taken the time to show how it can be done. How we can take the story of Joseph, Ruth and Naomi, as well as the story of the Eunuch from Ethiopia, and read them through the "Queer glasses". What might be interesting to some is looking at the texts but also withstanding the widespread urge to read things into the texts that are not there or we cannot know.
