GracePointe Church

The GracePointe community is leading the theological development and practice of Progressive Christianity. This is at the core of what makes us distinct, and is far from a simple label change for a modern repackaging of traditional beliefs.

This Sunday Josh will begin a two-week mini-series around the season of Pentecost. To start things off we’ll look at a story found in John 20, in which Jesus breathes the Spirit into his disciples. Well, except for one, Thomas. He missed the moment. What might the story of the disciple we’ve called “Doubting Thomas” for two thousand years teach us about our own experience? It might surprise you! The version of Easter we find at the end of Mark’s Gospel is very different from the other Gospels. It’s short, includes no appearance of the risen Jesus, and end abruptly. Yet, this is also the first Easter narrative, the one that Matthew, Luke, and John use as a springboard to tell their stories. What does Mark think Easter means? How does this strange story offer hope or speak to us today?

What does it mean for us if the miracles in Scripture really happened? What does it mean if they didn’t? What comes to mind when you hear the phrase Word of God? For most people, first association that pops into mind is the Bible. Many of us were raised with the lens that taught us that the Bible was the inerrant, infallible Word of God, that contains no errors or issues (in the original autographs). That’s quite the expectation, which is one of the problems when it comes to the way we approach the Bible: We place expectations on the Bible that it isn’t equipped to bear.

This week we continue our series contrasting conventional and unconventional wisdom. Conventional wisdom holds that politics and religion are separate spheres, and they should never be combined. Conventional wisdom is a shared body of wisdom about how to live; it’s a lens and worldview that we share. It’s what “everybody knows.” Yet, sometimes conventional wisdom is, well, flat out wrong. The largest chunk of the Christian Calendar isn’t celebrations of Easter or Advent. It’s a period referred to as “Ordinary Time.” There something about that word, “ordinary,” that sounds just so ... ordinary. Unremarkable. Forgettable. We live for the opposite, the extra-ordinary. A critique often leveled against progressive/liberal Christians is that we don't hold a "high" view of the Bible. Stan makes the case here that, for many of us, it's quite the opposite.
