I've been going back through my archives and picking some songs I felt I wanted to revisit. Not because I dislike the originals . . . I just had some different ideas/melodies going through my head. That is the case with "Bedtime Stories". I truly like the original a great deal. However, I had some new elements I wanted to try with the base chord structure, so off I went.
While not the final track on the album "Lila" is the last track written for my upcoming instrumental concept album release: "There's A World". "Lila" is a rocker (and possibly my favorite)on the entire album. This track is flat out good:)It's a rocker culminating in one of my signature coda endings. There's also a psychedelic nod to the master himself, Jimi Hendrix, with some one off guitar runs interspersed. That being said, "Lila" is not about a girl. In the ancient Hindu Vedas, "Lila" is the play . . . the stage; and we're all playing a role!
"You've Arrived" is the final/closing track on my upcoming instrumental concept album release: "There's A World". This one is upbeat, but does have some subtle time signature changes, where it slows down a bit. I love the middle break and the coda at the end, as well! "You've Arrived" is the answer to what all of the album's other songs have been alluding to. Where will you arrive? Only you can answer that:)
"Dream In a Dream" will be part of my upcoming instrumental album, "There's a World". The title and what it's alluding to was actually inspired by one of my favorite songs by Queensryche: "Silent Lucidity". The notion being that all that we hear, see and experience 'here' on earth is nothing more than an illusion. We're in a dream right now:)
"Maya (IAI)" is the newest track on my upcoming instrumental concept album release, "There's a World". In case you're wondering, IAI alludes to "It's an Illusion". As far as the track is concerned, this one is far simpler than many of the tracks on this album . . . a little stripped back, if you will. It still has the vibe I'm looking for regarding this upcoming album, but the song dictated a more laid back approach. Hope you enjoy it!
"Beyond Simulation" is the short opening track of my upcoming instrumental concept album release, "There's a World". The song's notion was inspired by a book I read entitled "The Simulation Hypothesis" by Rizwan Virk. However, just because this introductory song is short, doesn't mean that you're not going on a mind warping trip . . . especially, if you have headphones on.
"Pixels and Particles" is the newest track, which will be released as part of my "There's a World" instrumental concept album. It's an ambitious track with time signature changes, key changes and some cosmic effects. It's certainly a trip. Hope you enjoy it!
Lord have mercy, where do I start with this one? While it's another track on my upcoming concept instrumental album, "There's a World", this track pushed me to my limits (in more ways than one). "Everything Will Be Fine" is a labor of love. It has gone through so many transitions and variations; it took me forever to get the sound I was looking for (and I'm still not sure I quite found it, but to avoid insanity, I'm happy with this mix). From a chord structure standpoint, I think it's beautiful; but then again, I'm biased, since I wrote it:) Hope you like it!

I actually kind of free-styled a bluesy, wah-wah, crunch guitar riff in the background that is kinda' cool. I had fun with it. Quite honestly, human beings can be quite the selfish and self-righteous bunch. Often, we believe the world (or life) owes us something; or if something goes wrong, we look for anything or anyone to blame, before looking at ourselves.

This is quite the eccentric track. As its part of my upcoming "Bare" instrumental album, it's devoid of percussions, drums, etc. However, that doesn't mean the song lacks depth. "Make Believe" is a fairly ambitious track filled with woodwinds, guitars and ethereal appeal. So, chill out and take trip into the land of "Make Believe"!
"Learn the Way" is another track that will be on my next instrumental album entitled, "Bare". Tracks on this album are more minimalistic, but still have some of that ethereal vibe I'm becoming known for. At heart, this song is a piano piece; however, listen closely for multiple guitar tracks and let them guide you to "Learn the Way".
"Spheres" is the second track on my upcoming "Bare" instrumental album. No beats, drums, percussions, etc. Simply guitars, bass and some ethereal elements (which is the theme of this entire upcoming album). That being said, this track is pretty trippy (if you listen closely). In the end, it all comes full circle . . . hence, "Spheres".
"Summer's End" is the first track on what will be my 6th instrumental album release. The album is entitled "Bare". It will be filled with tracks that are stripped down, acoustic if you will. It is not a sitcom where we get an opportunity for a rerun . . . hence, our lifelines can and will close fast. Grab onto life and live it for all its worth! Musically, it's an ambitious track, heavy on the strings (with a healthy dose of guitar layers in the background). Personally, my favorite part is the Coda at the end. Hope you like it!
"Weight of Circumstance" is a proud moment. It's weird; it's trippy; it's mind-bending. However, it didn't start that way. I just had a simple riff in my head that I had no idea where to go with it. Over time, it began blending together into this mind-warping journey. Put on headphones, lay back, close your eyes and go on an epic trip!
"Chasing Shadows" is a fairly stripped down track (at least in my catalog of music creations it is). Simple layered guitar tracks with a gentle layer of harmonics to float along the backside. It's a pretty calming track . . . so, lay back and enjoy!
The track "Solaris" is an ode to the sun. The name "Solaris" is both a boy's name and a girl's name meaning "of the Sun." This song's title came from how the piano chorus makes me feel while listening to it: bright, warm and free.
"Longing" (in my opinion) is my masterpiece (up to this point). I love it! Beyond being my "long"est composition, it simply takes the listener on a journey. The title comes from when I was putting together the second piano section (at the 5 minute mark). This entire sequence reminded me of missing somebody. Wanting or wishing for them to be in your life again. Hence, the title. Hope you all enjoy it.
"Memories Fade" evokes a sense of solace and serenity. In my mind, it's a reminder that when we think someone/something we love is gone, they really aren't. We just need to pay attention. From a musical standpoint, my favorite part is the conga break at 2:27! Make sure to check that part out:)
Oh, where to start with "Questions Outweigh My Answers"? The track title says it all. This song took me longer than most to reach its final form. I kept asking myself "What if?", which can often lead to running in circles on a hamster wheel. -What if I change the tempo here? -What if I alter the piano keys to violin strings? -What if I add a CODA at the end which leads to a crescendo? . . . and on and on. Finally, I've come to what you're hearing here, and I'm truly proud of. While I may still have more questions, I've answered enough to see this piece of music to its completion.
"Bedtime Stories" is kind of a juxtaposition. You have a very ambient feeling bedrock with piano and ethereal effects. However, you also have a more rock n' roll feel electric guitar doing simple runs throughout. The guitar runs are in the realm of David Gilmore (Pink Floyd). No, I'm not nearly as good as him; the point is the runs are not flashy; as I've learned, often it's in what notes are left out or are left to sustain that do the bulk of the talking.
What started as a simple piano run in D major turned into quite the experiment. While intended to be a ballad, this track took a mind of its own and developed into a far more upbeat song, with a concentration on electronic beats and heavy guitar reverb. In the end, I'm really happy with how "Imagine a Time" turned out!
I'm gonna' be honest . . . I love this track! "Leap of Faith" was inspired by thinking of the challenges that humanity has been able to conquer by having the guts to simply take a "leap of faith" and go for the gold so to speak. When we truly put our minds, hearts and souls into an endeavor, there's not much we can't accomplish. So, what are you waiting for? Take the leap!
"Hard to Find" is the first song I've written for the next album, "Processing." I'm really proud of it. It's a piano piece at heart; but there's some majorly layered guitar tracks. Not to mention there are two distinct/separate bass lines, as well. Hope you all like it!
Ahh . . . where to start with "Cosmic Harmony." Well, its intro and exit have a very Seattle feel; but then out of nowhere, you'll hear some REM inspiration . . . and then when you think you have it all figured out, off we go to church with the angelic voices and harmonies. It's a cosmic ride!
"Familiar Change" is honestly a piano piece at heart. The piano lays the foundation. However, as with many of my tracks, that's when layers of the cake are added. With an eclectic, funky bass line, along with multiple guitar tracks . . . this is a track perfect for closing your eyes and taking a nap in the gentle breeze of summer.
I felt like it was time to rock a bit again. I've been on the laid back, ambient, shoegazer kick (which I do enjoy); but sometimes, I need to simply let it rip. And rip (my friends) is exactly what "Repeat Transmission" is all about. Powerchord heaven and a bass line waiting to chew on your face (in a good way!) Enjoy.
"It Won't Be Long" is pretty unique for me in a couple of ways. One is I'm starting to play around with piano runs. Secondly, there's a bass line where the notes bend to a new octave (similar to the guitar bends in "In My Life" by the Beatles; or Eddie Van Halen in "Runaround".) It's a longer song that feels like you're longing for something and hopefully . . . "It Won't Be Long" before it appears;)
"Fall From Grace" is a moody little thing. It has tempo changes; it goes from standard tunings to sharp chords and back again; it even has some techno nuances in the background (if you listen closely). Hell, there's even a choir in there:) The title comes from the A A/G A/F# A/F run . . . falling down, down, down. Yep, that's show my mind works:)
"Soul Searching" is a song on a musical journey that is longing to find "home." Its tempo changes, multiple backing tracks, spirits speaking, and then some are all culminating together to reach the end of their journey (or "search" if you will).
"Clear as Day" stems from how this creation makes me feel. While writing and recording it, it just had a simplistic clarity to it. However, listen closely (seriously, listen closely), and you'll hear there's lot to be discovered hidden in the clarity!
This one is quite interesting. Call its inspiration a cross between Muse and just seeing the new Batman movie. The song has a dark, yet mellow groove (albeit the ghost talking to you in the background is a little eerie). It's really cool how a song comes together from a simple guitar riff and then off I go into another world! That's the beauty of music!
This is certainly my longest track (up to this point); this is due to the outgoing Coda at the end. It's kind of in the realm/inspiration of "Take Me Back" by Lynyrd Skynyrd. In essence, the coda takes you down the stream to bring an end to your journey. Be ready, as well, for the 2nd portion of the coda (as it lifts off with a heavy guitar and choir!) Hope you enjoy it!
"Dusk to Dawn" is a pretty adventurous track . . . at least for me it is. Some tempo and key changes are present give it a feeling a time actually changing (i.e. dusk to dawn). Part of the song feels like you're walking down the street in New York City, with your best strut. Then, the tempo changes and it's time to take off your walking shoes and chill till' the dawn.
"Spanish Radiance" is a track in which I give a nod to the beauty of Spanish guitar elements. Sprinkled throughout the track are simple guitar runs, which illuminate the beauty of the Spanish guitar sound. Furthermore, if listened to closely, you'll hear a really cool bass line laying down the song's foundation. Enjoy!
"So Long" is kind of mellow instrumental rock. I really love the break groove I found on the B string. It's my favorite part of the song. It kind of has a longing feeling to it, hence the title.
There's nothing complicated with "Down the Delta." This is simply a southern rock groove at its grittiest . . . at least my grittiest:) Hope you like it!
"Wait for Me" is a pretty laid back track. No inner Judas Priest or Iron Maiden coming out on this one. This one is for putting on headphones, breathing deep and going night night. Or at the bare minimum, getting some relaxation.
Don't ask me how this one came about; it's pretty different for me, but I like it. The title holds the key to my inspiration for this song (as does the quote and color in the art); not to mention the name after the quote:) So while my Prince had more talent in his pinky fingernail than most do in their entirety, this song is still my "nod" to him, thanking him for his inspiration on me.
It was time to shred a bit. "Face the Mirror" is the heaviest track I've done in quite some time. It's always fun to let it rip and release my inner Judas Priest or Iron Maiden (I'm just not near as good:)) Be careful if you turn this one up; the bass line might just melt your face off . . . but with rock n' roll, that's a good thing!
"Outside Looking In" was actually inspired by one of my favorite band's songs: "Wish You Were Here" by Chicago; hence the ocean waves in the beginning. Beyond that, this is simply an ethereal, ambient journey of the mind. Listen with headphones . . . especially for one of the guitar tracks. You'll be in La La Land:)
"Life Before" is not very difficult, but I really think this chord blending is quite beautiful. It's also easy going . . . something that our species seems to have lost sight of. We love rushing to get absolutely nowhere. This song is the antithesis to that notion.
"Frayed Seams" may be my most ambitious track, yet. Multiple guitars, violins, an uptempo backbeat . . . it's all in there. Each of these elements are components of the "seam" holding this musical track together. Enjoy!
"It's Complicated" is a track that came relatively easy to me, once I discovered the hook I was looking for. That hook being one of my favorite chord blends (A - A/F# - A/E). With this part in place, it all came together. Hope you enjoy it!
"Swept Away" is all about letting the subtle wind take you where they. Dance along and cherish the journey. What's unique about this one is not trying for perfection. When I listen to some of the great classic rock bands, there are imperfections in some of the recordings; and that's what makes them so authentic and real; less polish and more grit!
From a chord structure standpoint, this is a really simple track. However, I was going for the "crunch" on this one. I was actually inspired by an awesome Judas Priest song for this one titled "Lochness." I'm certainly not Glenn Tipton or K.K. Downing, but I'm happy with the results.
"Clock-watching" is one of my favorites. It's a little different in the fact that it's all in flat chords, which I haven't done much of in the past. My solo runs are also a favorite of mine; they're not fast or flashy; but in solos, sometimes the beauty is in the notes you don't play or in the ones you let sustain themselves. Regardless, hope you all enjoy it!
This track evokes a feeling of coming out of a sleepy haze and greeting the new morning with a smile and a sense of gratitude. This song just makes me happy. Hope you like it!
While this song sounds nothing like Rush (although I do love their catalog), the title and feel of the song is heavy, but also mysterious. This got me thinking about how the beauty of music is brought to us through technology, etc. And with this immediate transfer of energy comes power: the power of music. Even though we may not see it, we certainly can feel it and hear it!
"Passing Hours" is a melody-scape of sorts. Its base element is my guitar tuned in Cmaj with the capo on the 5th fret, creating a brighter melody of sorts. The theme is inspired from when I present to people around the country; many seem to act like life is a sitcom where you'll get a rerun . . . hence just letting the hours pass. When in reality, the only thing that truly matters is RIGHT NOW! Hope you all like it.
"Where I Fall" is a simplistic rock tempo song in Cmaj. What I truly am proud of is how its rock tempo early on turns into something inspirational when the violins crescendo. It's a nice little juxtaposition. It's kind of asking: "Will someone be there when and where I may fall?"
Close your eyes and let the astral plane take you on a 2:20 journey. Don't turn it up too loud though or the glass ceiling effect will shake the rafters (the E, F#, G# chorus). This song is layered like a cake with 4 guitar tracks, a piano, bass, and of course . . . the glass ceiling:)
"Rebirth" is unique as its guitar track is on the heavier side; however, there is no drum track per se. It has percussion backing, but its focus is the journey the guitar goes on . . . especially teetering between major and flat chords. Hope you like it!
"Neverland" is a creation I'm proud of. Slowly but surely, I'm allowing myself to set my fingers free and produce some lead runs. Not sure why I've waited this long, but I like the color the runs add to this track.
Cascade is the newest track to be added to my "Water" album/playlist. A cascade is a powerful flow, which is how this song feels to me. It builds up a current (if you will) and then unleashes in the chorus, only to recede back to its mellow verse structure.
Celestial is another of my mind-warping compositions. Set in the key of C major, it certainly takes you for an ethereal sort of ride. By coincidence, the intro bars sound similar to "Hey You" by Pink Floyd. Did not intend that, but I can certainly hear it. Apparently they've made a mark on my life:)
This is an interesting one that follows the basic line patterning of an A chord. However, during the bridge portions the A makes an entire run down to an E. I'm also proud of the choir addition. Gives it an airy feeling . . . so breathe it in!
"Willow Breeze" was a laid back night, laying down a laid back track. Some delay overdubs along with a sitar effect of all things create a pretty chill track in my opinion:)
"Restless Destination" was inspired about how as a species we seem to like running ourselves ragged . . . and for what? Where do we think we're actually getting to by tearing ourselves slowly apart by rushing everywhere. This bleak observation is matched by a heavy Nine Inch Nails/Trent Reznor aspirations here. Note I said aspirations:)
I wrote this song for my wife for Valentines Day. She'll understand the meaning. "Complete" means just that. Being together; being whole. Just simply being.
The Japanese beetle is a highly destructive plant pest that can be very difficult and expensive to control. From a personal standpoint, if we look closely enough, we all have our own Japanese beetle festering within our psyche.
"Far From Home" is an ambient little track with flowing guitar tracks and gentle strings laying backbone. Honestly, this is one of my favorites even though it's truly a simple A/D/B7 structure.
I wrote this little rocker after being tired of watching all the horse poop on the news. We've gotten to a point where it's hard to believe in anyone. But . . . there are a few that I truly believe in. Who? That's my business:) Trust me . . . they've earned that belief and trust. From a musical standpoint, check out the "smart strings" as a backing layer. It fills out the groove nicely.
This simple track is the intro/exit to my podcast episode "Secrets." When I put it together, I was inspired by the simplicity, yet pure angst in Soundgarden's version of "In My Time of Dying." Quite the juxtaposition considering I've tilted it "Whisper." I guess whispers can be quite powerful, as well!

The inspiration came from a book I was reading with my students at the time titled Fever 1793; which is set in Philadelphia (which has the Liberty Bell). That got me thinking about 'freedom' as Elton John has a phenomenal song titled "Philadelphia Freedom"! See how my mind works:) Well, there ya' go!
This track is the intro/exit to my podcast "No Return to Syndication." This is a far darker track than most of my stuff. I was channeling my inner Soundgarden and Tool for "Dirt." I'm not nearly as good, but I can channel them just the same:)
This track is the intro/exit to my podcast episode "My Life. My Destiny. My Choice. Thanks." I call it "Reach" as the singular note at the end sustains as it's deciding which journey to take next. Also, when I wrote it, I was thinking of how all of us are searching for something. The key is finding out what it is exactly.
This song is the intro/exit track to my podcast episode "Throttled." The title "Victorious" comes from the power chord that comes out of nowhere towards the end of the song; it feels like you've just crossed whatever finish line you've been striving for.
This track is the intro/exit to my podcast episode "Changes." The title "Balance" alludes to the key structure here. I was inspired while listening to "Strawberry Fields" by the Beatles. What I love about this particular song is how John Lennon purposely is somewhat out of tune. The key change is subtle, but it's there. I did the same thing here with "Balance" as there is a portion where I purposely went "off balance" within the song's construct . . . cause why not:)
This track is the intro/exit to my podcast episode "Don't Forget You." The title "Tunnels" came to me when listening to the playback. The ambience and reverb remind me of a video game I played (which I feel is about the afterlife) called Journey, by ThatGameCompany. The tunnels referring to the transfer portal from here to there . . . wherever "there" happens to be.
This new track was built and layered on a simple chord progression. But if listened to closely, you'll hear multi-guitar tracks (along with a flute of all things) blended in. "To the Wire" alludes to taking things as far as need be to accomplish whatever dream(s) you may be striving for.
Propaganda is the track I wrote which is the intro/exit to my podcast episode "Overstimulation Theory." It's slower and darker than most of my tracks (so far); but its inspiration came from a darker place.

This track is the intro/exit to my podcast episode "Time Is Never On My Side." The title "Footsteps" came from the bass line. When I listen to the playback (the dum dum dum dum), it sounds like something is coming right up behind me . . . hence, footsteps!

"Stardust" is the intro/exit track to my podcast episode "Silver Brick Road." The track title came from the ending with the backing guitar scale run. It reminds me of a star making its way to earth. Not sure why, but it does:)

Children (and adults) need to build their resiliency armor. Just like your muscles are not going to grow without putting great stress on them (exercising); your resiliency coat of armor needs to be built. Unfortunately, this armor is often built through adversity. Not running from it; not being saved from it; not being coddled from it . . . but by gritting your teeth and ENDURING through it! IT TAKES WORK!

As defined, an agenda is an underlying often ideological plan or program. Sounds kind of fancy, but not really. You see . . . each and every person who comes your way (in person, through media, etc.) wants something from you.
Weβre going deep here my friends. Iβm not talkng the deep end of the pool. Iβm talking the deepest depths of the ocean. Buckle your seat belt and keep hands and arms inside this podcast vehicle at all times. This episode is actually piggybacking off my most recent newsletter to Teach4Endurance subscribers: The Writing On the Wall. However, this concept and its underlying meanings just wonβt let me go at the moment. I feel the need to share more and thereby, hopefully make you all think deeply on your own levels and in your own comfort zones.
Ah, the wonder of value. -It can be a noun: The value of the painting is remarkable. -It can be a verb: I value your opinion. Actually, it comes from the Latin origin from LatinΒ valere meaning βbe worthβ. However my friends, were going to go with values simple meaning in its noun form: the regard that something is held to deserve; the importance, worth, or usefulness of something.
I wasn't sure what direction this episode was going to take. You see, I invited my first guest (Michigan High School Hall of Fame Football Coach, Tony Patritto) to come and share his endurance thoughts with me. Once the episode/interview was over, the word "sincerity" came to my mind. That my friends is what I believe Tony Patritto's answers all entail . . . sincerity and integrity. Enjoy!
There is no doubt that life can be difficult. In fact, 2020 has been (in many ways) a train wreck. You do not have to look far to find negativity, fear, ugliness . . . and I'll stop the adjectives here. You get the idea. However, even in tough times, it can be beneficial to put on your Sherlock hat and look deeply for silver linings. Even the darkest of instances can contain collateral beauty.
Taking a different route with this episode. The world and its current dilemma (Covid-19) is our ultimate classroom setting. With that notion, it's easy to look at only what's in front of you. However, that's not what's going to knock you on your butt. Those come from peripherals. It's the things to the right, left, above, and under that will throttle you if you don't keep an eye out. *The intro/backing track is a simple piece I wrote called "Eyes Wide Open."
Even when times are normal, which at the moment, they are certainly not, it's easy to rush through your routines without giving yourself a second thought. To be the best to those around you, you have to give yourself some much needed attention, as well.
Time is never on any of our sides. Heck, we truly don't even know what "time" is. What we do figure out is that it is quite the precious resource; and like many resources, we wish we had more of it. Time to get crafty with our time both in training and in the work environment.
Guess what . . . I'm not a physicist. That being the case, why in the heck would I try to make my workday or racing experiences? Life can be hard enough. Therefore, keep things simple and relaxed and ask yourself . . . "Why so serious?" Thanks Joker!
Whether racing, teaching, or simply living . . . it's a mathematical certainty that a change in course will be required at some point. While a simple "one-way" road would be nice and simple; the reality is that we are required to navigate intricate turns, bridges, roadblocks, closures . . . well, that's enough of the metaphors. You get the idea. Be ready for change when the time comes.
Just as I chart my own path to my racing goals and their ultimate destinations; I'd love the powers that be in education to allow the same latitude in our own development as educators.
It's important to remain aware of what type of motivators are running your day to day life. Are you being led by extrinsic motivations? Or, are your days focused on what intrinsically motivates you? While there is nothing adherently wrong with extrinsic motivations, be conscious of extrinsic overload.
I'm not a big fan of hypotheticals. I'd rather just go experience or learn something to get the answers, rather than asking "what if" all my life, while never getting very far. If you're going to play the "what if" game, answer your question and be proactive in a solution or a desired outcome.
This "secret" has served me not only in endurance racing, but in the classroom as an educator, as well. By keeping four specific things in mind, I'm able to survive both 100's of miles during a race, or the 9 months in a typical school year.
No Return to Syndication discusses how I view the time we have here on Earth, what we do with that time, and the time I'm honored to have with my students. It's imperative to make it count. We only get one shot.
Overstimulation Theory reflects on how too much of anything is not necessarily a good thing. Just as I can become too attached to technology while training or racing, the same can be said for our children in the classroom. There's no doubt that technical advancements have numerous benefits. We just need to make sure that we don't allow technology to overshadow humanities need to truly connect, while learning to live, learn, and love together.
I approach teaching in the same manner that I conduct my training sessions for Ironman racing. I really don't have a direction. I have an end goal, but how I get there is anyone's guess:)
