He also talked about policies and processes that they implement in Facebook that would help a lot of people on having good organizational management.

According to Erez, there are two things that he would take and change on the way he acted before in running his own company:

  • Be driven by impact. In order to know what the right impact is, you need to have a clear vision.
    • Once the vision is very clear, everybody is aligned to the vision and all the team is measured based on the impact, there'll be no argument and conflict.
  • HPM document - Highlights. People. Me.
    • At the end of the week, each team writes this document and circulate it. This is how the entire company is updated on the highlights, on their people and on personal happenings of each individual. This is important to measure the team progress.

Erez also talked briefly about Onavo and its impact on the community. He also shared his journey from doing a start-up to his current career. He talked about the role of a product manager. This episode is the continuation of Shira Levy Barkan’s discussion on relationship marketing and its essential components. When it comes to content marketing, Ms. Barkan maintains content is key.

Content can come in diverse forms. It can be:

  • an e-book
  • a photo
  • a video
  • a slogan
  • customer advocacy, etc.

There are several assets / engines that can be used to build relationships. Some of the assets / engines you can tap into can include:

  • web
  • mobile
  • blogs
  • Facebook page
  • editorials
  • social emails

Ms. Barkan considers it ideal for content to be done in-house. In addition, content recycling is something you should look into. When recycling content, take into account the following:

  • You can use a video and make an e-book out of it or you can create several versions of the same material.
  • Don’t use only one type of content across all your social media channels.
  • As a general rule of thumb, make the content relevant to the channels and the audience.
  • Plan your content in advance to ensure you keep your audience within your ecosystem.
  • It is recommended that you have an editorial / content plan prepared at least a month in advance.

Key takeaways

  1. Relationship management
    • Should be data-driven. The figures will help you decide where to go.
    • Ensure you have the right content infrastructure.
    • Make sure the community is engaged in your content.
    • Lastly, don’t forget management is key.
  2. Life cycle management
    • What’s the content?
    • What’s the community?
    • How are you managing it?
  3. Creating value
How are you creating value for your audience? Value does not always mean cheaper or faster. It can also be a lot of other things like:

  4. fun

  5. great pictures
  6. connection with others

In today’s special episode, you get to listen in as the current CMO of Microsoft CEE Multi-Country Shira Levy Barkan shared the organization’s marketing methodology. The former CMO of Microsoft Israel has been with the company for 6 years. However, in a few months she’ll be moving to a different industry and will take on the role of VP Marketing for Playtika.

According to Shira, it does not matter if you’re a huge company or a small one, building a relationship (Relationship Marketing) with the customer is something you need to work on. However, establishing a relationship alone won’t suffice. The relationship needs to also be:

  • Controlled
  • Managed
  • Measured

Once you are able to establish a good relationship, you’ll be able to bring in more money. Also, it becomes relatively easier for you to fix things in case you mess up.

Any company who uses relationship marketing needs to be ROI-focused. Without ROI, pursuing the marketing strategy is not practical. In addition, you also need to measure. Otherwise, you can’t scale.

In a nutshell, relationship marketing is strategic and reflective and will require commitment. Using this strategy, you need to answer some key questions:

  1. How do you form / establish a relationship?
  2. What kind of channels / infrastructures do you need to tap?

Emphasis is also placed on value creation (what’s in it for them?). In the same manner, business focus is also factored in. Why? Gaining customers is 5 times more expensive than keeping the current ones.

Understanding customers is also given priority. When you understand your customers, you are able to provide:

  • Better products
  • Better services

Another key statistic to take into account: A 5% increase in customer retention can also mean 25% to 85% increase in profit. In addition to that, your business will enjoy:

  • More loyalty
  • Favorable word-of-mouth
  • Less resentment when you make mistakes

Shira also discussed the 3 key components of engagement, namely:

  • Reach or how you get to people – for those who have limited marketing allocation, they can use blogs, social media platforms, email marketing, etc.)
  • Engagement or how you engage with people – the key here is creating value. In line with this, you can do webinars, events, round tables, user groups, customer advocacy, etc.)
  • Adaption – this is where loyalty is achieved
