We ventured out west again to meet with the team at Tanganyika so that they could talk about their upcoming future plans for the park. There has been some online backlash due to some of these announcements, and so the team wanted an opportunity to explain their side of the situation and get us all very excited for what is coming soon.
Whether you agree with some of the changes or not, it appears that Tanganyika is doing all it can to position itself as a unique experience not just in Kansas but in all of America. This could be a great destination for tourists from all over to come check out. Only in Kansas!

We had the ultimate privilege of sitting down with Scott Carter, the resident expert on all things Father Emil Kapaun, to not only figure out how to pronounce his name (spoilers we didn't) but also to hear the story of the life of this incredible (almost) Wichitan both before and after his death. Scott makes the remark that Father Kapaun might be the most famous person buried in Wichita and having heard his story, you will probably agree. The man was not only a great Wichitan but an even better human who put his life on the lines constantly to serve others.

We sat down with Stacee Olden, Development Director for the Wichita Orpheum Theatre, and Delmar Klocke, Board Member and resident Orpheum Historian to hear about the history of the Wichita Orpheum. The Orpheum hits its 100 year anniversary on September 4th, and so we thought it would be the perfect subject to explore the ups and downs of the theatre for the last 100 years. It was the first atmospheric theatre in the United States and you can still see and hear the amazing sounds that come from this Spanish courtyard inspired theatre.

The Wichita Wind Surge may not have a long history as the minor league baseball team in Wichita but baseball in Wichita (as we've covered before) does. We sat down high up in the broadcasting booth to talk about the Wichita Wind Surge, how the organization founds its way to Wichita, the new stadium, and the team name.
We also got to sit down with Tim Grubbs - the Director of Broadcasting and Team Travel for the Wind Surge. Tim was kind enough to share his story of coming to Wichita, his life with the organization over the years, and how good the nachos are at Riverfront Stadium.

We sat down with Mike Carney, Josh Shelton, and Mannie Shelton to hear all about the game of polo. Since 1931, one of the longest running USPA clubs int he US, Wichita has been a mecca for polo and a center of the Midwest circa. They say it is like playing golf during an earthquake and those involved with the sport are obsessed with the beauty of the sport.
They play from July to October and have tournaments during several weekends and an open game to the public every Sunday during that period. And they also have Polo on the Plains in September and Real Men Wear Pink in October which are two charity events giving back to the community.
We really enjoyed hearing the history of the Fairfield Polo Club, where the sport of polo is heading today and how women are affecting it, and all about the horse athletes.

The Kansas Coliseum was the original premiere venue for the Wichita area from 1977 until 2010 when it shut its doors forever. It played host to concerts, dog shows, monster truck rallies, several sports teams, and many more during its illustrious run. It is now the National Institute for Aviation Research and providing a great service to the city of Wichita, the country, and aircraft in general but we will always miss those long walks from the parking lot, past the metal bulls, into an arena like none other.

We had the incredible opportunity to sit down with local legend, Bob Lutz, to hear a little about his history working for the Wichita Eagle and also his newest project - League 42. Although the league has been around for several years, it is heading in some awesome directions.
From the League 42 website:
"League 42, named in honor of the great Jackie Robinson, the first African-American in Major League Baseball, is a youth baseball league comprised primarily of urban children ages 5 – 14. McAdams Park at 17th & Wabash (I-135 & 13th Street area) is home to the League and where we play our games. Practices are held at McAdams, too, as well as other baseball fields across the city."

The Great Plains Nature Center sitting smack dab in the middle of the Chisholm Creek Park is like getting out into the natural prairie without having to leave Wichita. This 282 acres with 2 1/2 miles of paved trails is FREE to the public and open 7 days a week while the Nature Center provides educational experiences for all ages.
We were fortunate enough to sit down with Amanda Alessi - Director of the Great Plains Nature Center so she could walk us through a little history of the center as well as what they are currently up to. It was a very educational experience and we hope you all enjoy!

Before Delano was a part of Wichita - it was the center of lawlessness on the Chisholm Trail. Cowboys would come to bathe nude, participate in drinking and gambling, and get themselves into gun fights. Eventually Wichita couldn't turn a blind eye any longer and incorporated Delano or West Wichita into the city. Delano today is vastly different than it was in cowboy days but it is still a great place to shop and eat and hang out.

One of the greatest running backs of all time, if not THE greatest running back of all time, is from (you guessed it) Wichita! Barry Sanders is most likely the best athlete to ever come out of Wichita (next to your three favorite podcast hosts, of course) and we walked through his history of growing up in Wichita, attending school at Oklahoma State University, and his short but amazing career in the NFL. College Hill is known in the Wichita community as one of the most beautiful neighborhoods you will find anywhere in the city. These elegant houses, which are starting to hit their century marks, were built with character, care, and love. Our technical director and local realtor (and David's wife) Emily Hahn is a big fan of the College Hill homes so she came in to assist David as he looked through the history. They were truly the first chain restaurant to build an infrastructure and system to make sure their product was perfected and standardized across the board. We had the fun opportunity to sit down with the 3rd graders at The Independent School (of which all three hosts are alumni) and they got to share their favorite fun facts about Wichita. Each year the 3rd graders at TIS learn about different Wichita topics as a project and so they wanted to share with us some of their knowledge! Many of them did topics we've talked about, many of them did topics we haven't, and at least one did a topic that neither David nor Andrew had ever heard about so a lot of learning was had all around.

The Wichita Eagle looks a lot different today than it did throughout the 1900s. The Eagle, along with its bitter rival the Beacon, was a staple of the Wichita community for many years. In more recent times, the Eagle has had its struggles to stay in the modernized world. The boys were fortunate enough to have the chance to sit down with Rick Stephens, a survivor of the Wichita State University football plane crash of 1970. This year marks the 51st anniversary of the plane crash so we wanted to get a first hand look at what happened on that tragic day so many years ago.
Rick was kind enough to tell us his story and share some personal life updates as well. His goal is keeping the memory of the event and those that perished in it alive and we did our best to achieve his goal with this episode.

Albeit probably a contributing factor to the program shutting down, it wasn't until 1986 that the city of Wichita and the university discontinued the program.

We were fortunate enough to sit down with Dalton Sanders and Dustin Ray Shannon - two major Joyland fans who walked us through a historical look at Joyland and what happened that shut it down. Joyland was a major part of the Wichita history in the mid to late 1900s and into the 2000s, and it is missed by many. There is much controversy around both the safety of the park as well as the leadership, which we discuss on the show.
Join us as we go through this roller coaster of ride that is the history of Joyland and it's impact on this great city. It was a beloved theme park that has since been abandoned, but it will live in our hearts forever.

If you think you can't homestead in the Wichita area, think again! We sat down with THE Mama Marketer aka Olivia Hayse and talked homesteading because her and her husband decided to move to the Wichita area around 3 years ago to do that very thing. We recorded this episode at Hayseed Farm which is where they spend their time raising chickens, ducks, and pigs as well as a huge garden to provide fresh fruit and vegetables. We were able to meet with Pretend Friend - a local bluegrass band who is unlike any other. With Grant Boesen on guitar and lead vocals, Brody Wellman on bass, and Evan Ogborn on the mandolin this trio has been described as "rockgrass," "new high lonesome," and "if Robert Plant and the Stanley Brothers had a baby."

Dating back to 1970 for the Wichita Centennial, the Riverfest has been a staple almost every year in Wichita. We sat down with Bryce to hear his experiences of creating a business from the start and putting out a product that is unmatched in the tequila game.
