What is it like being a physical therapist of color? What is it like being a female physical therapist of color? What is it like being a female physical therapist of color, who also competes and treats bodybuilders?
I pick Dr. Principal’s brain on these topics, as well as asking why other physical therapists of color don’t know about each other, and why physical therapists are so damn “greedy”. Dr. Suze-Elisha Principal has been a PT for over 14 years, specializing in treating spine, shoulder, and knee dysfunctionS, with an extensive background in neurogenic pain (sciatica, pinched nerves). She has a strong background in Sports Medicine and chronic pain. Dr. Principal is a nationally qualified body builder- “Bikini Division”.

So there's been a lot of talk about the gluteus medius (GM) and it’s role in:
hip abduction hip internal and external rotation (dependent upon hip position) pelvic stability controlling knee valgus
I'm not here to refute any of this. It's all true. My issue lies with how the GM is both screened and treated. If we wish to delver the best outcome to our clients, then we must dig deeper into the terms structure and function --- which are clinically synonymous for anatomy and physiology. Listen and learn the importance of knowing how the GM muscles function and how they play a role in your client’s work, life and play, will offer better results with your treatment plan, and yield improved client outcomes. Age gracefully?
You're only as young as you feel?
If you ain't got your health, you ain't got nothing.
I ain't no spring chicken anymore.
These are not just axioms, but solid beliefs. But why? Why do we believe that as we age, we are expected to get ill, lose function and competence, and become frail? Where and when did we learn to connect "aging" with deterioration? Why do we limit our full, physical potential the older we get?
In this podcast, we discuss:

To reach one’s full fitness potential, I believe one must progress and “master” each of the 4 C’s.:
Competency (of movement)
Confidence (with movement)
Capacity(to perform more movement)
Comprehension (of movement and fitness)
However, some children have developmenta delaysl (e.g. roll, crawl, sit up, balance on knee(s) or may lack the basic motor control, balance or stability needed to perform fundamental movements ( e.g. squat, lunge, climb, run, kick, swing) without loss of form, technique or incurring injury.
So then what happens when a child “lags” behind her peers in play or sports competency? She stops performing the task(s) because of embarrassment, peer judgement, ridicule and eventually shame. The child loses confidenceand stops practicing the movement, developing less skill and an aversion to the activity.
This podcast provides an example from my personal experience growing up in a predominately white, suburban neighborhood and experiencing shameand performance anxiety.

What does “physical fitness” mean to the therapist, coach or trainer and what does it mean to the client?
Communication and comprehension are both key components to the success of your client’s performance. Being bogged down with finding the absolute, perfect definition of “physical fitness” (a malleable term that will most likely evolve with time) is less important than explaining the rationale behind the why and how we test individual physical fitness.
Dr. Bo and I dig a bit deeper in part 2 of our Defining Fitness series. We discuss the primary components of physical fitness and why they are important.
___________
First of all, for a working definition of physical fitness, I use the capacity to perform work without injury.
Hopefully you'll see how this definition can apply to anyone --- the runner, dancer, drummer, Crossfitter, the construction worker--- anyone who moves and breathes.
With a working definition, I can now break physical fitness down to it’s bare bone, the essential components which I call them the 4 C’s of Physical Fitness (see full blog What Does Physical Fitness Mean to You and the 4 C’s of Fitness @ [hyperlink]
Competency (of movement)
Confidence (with movement)
Capacity (to do more movement)
Comprehension (of movement and physical fitness)

Do you have the capacity to move through work, life and play or run from zombies without suffering injury or death?
As a Physical Therapist, Strength and Conditioning Coach and educator, I find it uber important to be clear with our terminology when speaking to clients about training, workouts, programing, etc.
Defining “fitness” is no exception. If we are teaching our clients to be “fit” without explaining the “what”, “why”, “how” and“when”, then we are no better than the majority of other folks out our there, throwing this word around like "mobility" and "cardio".
However, if we create solid standards to define fitness, than we will not only be able to have a more productive conversation with our clients, but can now also measure fitness levels and prescribe the right client-specific program targeting the client's full fitness potential. These standards would apply to the athlete, musician, performing artist, construction worker --- anyone who is breathing.
My friend and colleague, Dr. Bo Babenko and I do our best to simplify, quantify and qualify a working definition of "fitness" so our clients (and you) can apply this new knowledge and understanding to improve their health, well-being and overall survival rate!

To my knowledge, there is not one group of tools or systems in place that measure one’s training preparedness. Yes, there are individual tests. But there are no protocols that combine reliable tests to guide one’s intensity.
In this podcast, I have a really fun and informative Q&A session with triathlete and coach, Benjamin Kessel, owner of Priority Fitness in Park Slope Brooklyn.
We break down overtraining, overtraining symptoms, when to say when during exercising and different ways to recover.
Guest: Ben Kessel
Ben Kessel is the founder/owner of Priority Fitness (est 2008), a Brooklyn based fitness studio that also focuses on strength & conditioning for endurance athletes.
Ben has a fantastic team of trainers who work collectively with him. Ben has been a Strength & Conditioning coach since 2004 and has been an endurance coach since 2009. He coaches multiple endurance clubs throughout NYC and is the President of the Brooklyn Tri Club.
Ben also coaches individuals from all backgrounds (recreational to professional) in performance/endurance training and general training health and wellness.
Ben was a collegiate athlete and has been an avid Triathlete for many years. He is an Ironman finisher and also represented Team USA in the ITU age group world championships in 2019 and in the 2019 Ironman 70.3 World Championships a week later.

When I, a 52 your old black man living in New York, hear one brother plead, "I can’t breathe", suddenly, I can’t breathe. I literally and figuratively feel pressure on my neck, chest and back. My ability to fight or flee become restricted, as if something or someone were binding my legs. If I am feeling like this, I know others are feeling like this pressure. How can you play, perform or fully function throughout the day if you are only taking partial breaths? I wanted to take this time, although brief, and get myself and everyone to breathe deeply again.

Drummers (and by “drummers”, I mean all “percussionists”) are an unrepresented community who often find it difficult finding high-quality care specific to their injury, instrument and individual needs. 🛑 Stop wasting time ⏰ and money 💰 going back-and-forth between multiple doctors and clinicians that don’t truly understand your complex drumming pain 🤕 or particular needs. Don’t settle for cookie-cutter exercises that are not pertinent to your drumming instrument or style. 🎯 My mission is to bring my knowledge and experience (23 years physical therapist, 22 years strength and conditioning coach, 38 years drummer ) to you so you can play with increased comfort, control and confidence.
