Its Cobra Convergence 7! And Mark and Tim were interviewed by HCC788 AKA Bryan Stephen. It's a non numbered episode as we are just doing a bit of self-indulgent navel gazing talking about ourselves and the podcast. Talking Joe 209 - Spy Hunter & Paper Boy review - For Cobra Convergence 7 - The Best Hama Joe comic you've never heard of! Its the annual fan Cobra Convergence 7 where across the month Joe fan creators share new content! And the loose theme this year is spies, so what better tie in than to look at an unknown but GREAT comic from GI Joe Legend Larry Hama with the name SPYHUNTER in the tittle! Find out more about CC7 here: https://hcc788.com/ In this episode of next episode Mark and Tim are talking about what I am calling Larry Hama’s best GI Joe comic that you have never heard of, Spy Hunter & Paper Boy, released May 2021. (Even if technically speaking it isn't GI Joe). Released May 2021, Spy Hunter & Paper Boy #1-6 (DC, $3.99 each): a "digital first" (but in reality digital only) comic arriving on DC’s digital first channels including ComiXology, with all six issues released on the same dayYou can find the issues digitally on Amazon (formerly comiXology) link https://t.co/e4xMWUOT2xYou can also find the issue in other places if you were to Google "spyhunter paperboy viewcomic"The series is written by Larry Hama with art by Mac Rey, and letters by Pat Brosseau and it features a crossover between two old video game franchises, Spy Hunter and Paper Boy. There are very few details publicly available about the book - all 6 issues were quietly released as "Digital first" in May 2021 without any sort of fanfare or publicity by DC. There was really nothing in the comic itself that explained what the series was or why it existed and never had a print release. This is some of the best GI Joe like work by Hama since his prime in the 80s at Marvel with some stunning art. You can read the series and listen or listen and then read it or just listen, whatever!. There are a few spoilers but we've tried not to go too heavy on details of plot.Mac Rey (artist) - Arkansas resident, Mathew “Mac Rey” Reynolds started out in comics back in the early days of Malibu on books like AIRMAN and THE PROTECTORS, more recently he has worked on THE MERCENARY SEA from Image Comics. And “The RUFF and REDDY SHOW” from DC comics. After working on a creator-owned project called VIC FALCON with G.I. JOE writer Larry Hama, they went on to work together on Spy Hunter & Paper Boy.Spy Hunter: a vehicular combat action game developed by Bally Midway and released for arcades in 1983. The object of the game is to drive down roads in the technologically advanced the fictitious G-6155 Interceptor car and destroy various enemy vehicles with a variety of onboard weapons.Paperboy is an arcade action game developed and published by Atari Games and Midway Games, and released in 1985. The player takes the role of a paperboy who delivers a fictional newspaper called The Daily Sun along a suburban street on his bicycle. The game was ported to many home systems beginning in 1986.

What is our wishlist from the new GI Joe publisher? Mark and Tim Finn are joined by Jason Murrell (Order of Battle) and Bryan Mitchell ("A Real American Bryan") We speculating on future plans for the GI Joe comic at the new publisher, asking 2 key questions-What would we want to see from the Larry Hama written book for 301 and beyond? AND What would welike to see from the new (as yet not officially announced) publisher, beyond the Hama ARAH book? This was originally a YouTube livestream https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=izOKKxjFjFY recorded 4th Feb 2023 (before a new publisher has been confirmed). This is audio only - it is much more heavily edited (removing erms pauses etc) and has better audio quality. The video has us on Camera - but it isn't image heavy so you're not missing out by going audio only route.
Mark and Tim continue our look at the Disavowed era with G.I. Joe with an interview with special guest Tim SeeleyWe never take it easy on the comics when we are doing our reviews (I like to think we keep it to objective criticism - either gushing praise or unfair scorn) but I have a genuine affection for Tim Seeley's art run on GI Joe and it was great to get to talk to him about his time working on GI Joe with Devil's Due.Tim Seeley is an American comic book creator with many credits to his name, which includes writing on books such as Grayson and Batman Eternal, as the co-creator co-creator of the Image Comics titles Hack/Slash , but most importantly as a creator synonymous with the Devils Due Era of GI Joe; most significantly Pencilling most of issue 23-43, and writing the issues of Frontline, Special Missions and the 3rd and 4th Transformers crossovers., and more besides. We talk aboutStarting at Devils Due & recommending Steve Kurth as artistBullpen environment of Devils DueA memorable encounter with Larry HamaMoving from Drawing to both writing and drawingThe end of his run with issue 43 & launch of Americas eliteGI Joe vs TransformersWorking with Robert Kirkman back in early 200s - Snake Eyes on the moon!and more besides! This episode will be available as both audio only (more tightly edited) and video (3 talking heads with some extra images to illustrate talking points). My preference would be the audio only which gets rid of al the erms etc.
This is a clip from episode 190 (master and apprentice). Tim talks about his thoughts on seeing Snake Eyes unmasked.
Jim Shooter InterviewFor the 40th anniversary, Talking Joe continues its look back to the secret origins of GI Joe ARAH. Mark and Tim talk to Jim Shooter, editor-in-chief of Marvel Comics when G.I Joe was launched in 1982. As you will find out, Jim was instrumental to the creation and success of the G.I. Joe comic and the property as a whole.Jim Shooter is an American comics creator, editor, and publisher. He made his start writing Legion of Super-Heroes when he was only fourteen years old,He served as the editor-in-chief of Marvel Comics from 1978 to 1987 and during this time launched G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero in 1982, gave Larry Hama the writing gig and has editor in chief credits up to issue 64.After leaving Marvel he founded several comics companies including Valiant Comics, Defiant Comics and Broadway Comics.YouTube video is here. The audio only version should be broadly the same content - the audio quality is better, and has been edited down more carefuly. The benefit of the video is that we are all on screen and i share a few images on screen, but largely for colour rather than essential for understanding.https://youtu.be/7Hu7UMIajHMWe talk about- Licensed Properties at Marvel in the 1980s- The general conditions for Marvel, teetering on bankruptcy, and owners who had no interest in comics.- How Marvel was approached for G.I. Joe and the initial steps to putting together the book.- The parallels and differences with the launch of Transformers at Marvel.- And so much more besides!

Talking Joe interviews Ron Rudat - G.I. Sketchbook special - Chief's GI Joe sketches & commissions.Mark was joined by Talking Joe founder Chief Stride to a record sketchbook special looking at his selection of GI Joe sketches and commissions. We are looking at Chief's art collection on screen during this LiveStream recording, so this episode is a very visual heavy episode.I would recommend:1) Watching the Youtube Episode -https://youtu.be/mvggBgJxdrcor2) Listening to this audio only episode and having a look at the PDF on Patreon (on https://www.patreon.com/posts/70249889 )
We are continuing our look at the Disavowed era with G.I. Joe #34 & 35 , a two parter named “Bad Moon rising”(Devils Due Fall 2004) Joining Mark to discuss bad moon rising, its a real American Warewolf, Tim Finn and our resident lunar-tic, its GI Jay, Jay Cordray.I didn't make any notes on highlight so you'll just have to listen. But I did put in a new feature "Back once again with the GI Joe Master" - whatever could it be...?(but seriously if anyone wants to note some highlights as you listen that would be appreciated!) TJ Disavowed - Fantom (Wraith Origin) Backup story from 31 - 33Mark, Tim and Jay continue their look at the Disavowed era with the Wraith backups story - "Fantom" part 1-3 from 31,32,33.Attached is the column in the back of the book where Devils Due Creators are asked what damage they inflicted on their GI Joe toys.Questions asked:- How long can the Talking Joe team possibly talk about a story that is just 12 pages long?- What relevance could the inking style of Danny Miki possibly have to the issue at hand?- How did we mutilate our own GI Joe toys when we we young?- And what does the team think of this new crazy cat on the GI Joe scene, Wriath?Story: Brandon Jerwa,Art: Talent Caldwell,Inks: Jason Gorder,Colors: Christina StrainPublicity Blurb from 2004:Devil’s Due Publishing has chosen Aspen Studios to design WRAITH, a new major villain for the G.I.Joe comic book series. The studio will create a 3 part BACK UP story starting with G.I.Joe #31 . Devil’s Due has worked with Aspen in the past (on covers for G.I.Joe #22 and the COBRA REBORN incentive cover) and is happy to expand the relationship between the two publishers.Talent Caldwell will be providing the designs for the character, as well as art for the back up stories and two covers. Michael Turner will be illustrating the cover for the finale, with issue #33. Brandon Jerwa, who will provide the script for the story (entitled FANTOM), created WRAITH.Devil’s Due President Josh Blaylock is certain that the innovative new character will excite fans, while simultaneously acquiring new readers. “Brandon pitched this character to us over a year ago, and we’ve just been waiting for the right time. By bringing the Aspen guys on board, we’re sure to have a hit on our hands, and create a character that will be around for years to come. It’s gonna rock.”When asked about working with Devil's Due and helping to design Wraith, the new G.I. Joe character, Talent Caldwell said, "I'm really excited to be working on this project. I've always been a huge Joe fan, and being asked to design a new major character like this is really flattering. I've been wanting to do some work on G.I. Joe for a while, and this special story wound up being the perfect fit. It's been a lot of fun and I hope everyone enjoys what we have in store for them!"Talent CaldwellTalent Caldwell went to a Charlotte, NC comic con in 1997 and showed off his artwork for the first time. He was told to become more like the established artist like Michael Turner and Marc Silvestri. He took the words to heart. He moved from his hometown of Clarksville, TN to move to L.A. to try to get into his passion of film. Talent only did music videos and his first was in 1999, Sevendust “Denial” and then later Destiny’s Child “Bug-a-boo”. Talent realized he didn’t enjoy dancing and went back to drawing. At a comic con Talent was discovered by Michael Turner and offered a chance to show his stuff to Marc Silvestri. On January 12, 2000, Talent officially started working as a professional artist. He did background work on Fathom. Only to move onto the creation of the miniseries Fathom: Killian’s Tide. Later Talent left Top Cow to join Michael Turner forming Aspen Comics. After a lawsuit between Top Cow and Aspen comics, Talent’s Fathom: Dawn of War miniseries was published. He co-wrote and drew the artwork for it to be published in 2004. After the release of the miniseries, he broke away from Aspen comics to do freelance work. He has done artwork for Marvel and DC comics. Talent worked on Wildstorm and Gen 13 comics during his freelance career.

This arc marks the comeback from Larry Hama to GI Joe after about 8 years away - and Tim cannot wait to discuss them because they are freaking fascinating.
Questions asked; How does a series pan out with an artist who likes to write page to page but is forced to map out an entire arc in advance, does the silent castle need an elevator. All this and more from the podcast which gave you Josh Blayock’s favourite ever interview!

Mark, Tim and Jay are talking G.I. Joe vs Transformers (Devils Due 2003) in the 11th of our “Disavowed” episodes that look at the Devils Due era. This series coincides with writer Josh Blaylock’s run on the series concluding - are there parallels to be made with his work in the main series? Questions asked; Is a new universe a good idea? What do we think of the nuclear treat in the story? What makes a good Transformers crossover? Will Jay keep it together recording this show in between night shifts? But most importantly can Mark make his co-hosts titter with a list of Transformers names in a special edition of Innuen-Joe.

Talking Joe episode 128 GI JOE A REAL AMERICAN HERO #283
Mark and Tim chat about issue of G.I. Joe ARAH # 283, released 16th June 2021, with the artist of the issue, Shannon “SL” Gallant.
Questions asked and answered in this episode include; does mark remember to hit the record button, what sound effects does gunfire hitting an armoured table make, what is the origin of Zandar’s bandanna, how does Owen Wilson relate to this issue, and what is the deal with new Joes Multo and Black hat?
Shannon previously joined Chief and SJubs back in episode 86 in August 2020 discussing the Death of Snake Eyes and snacks.
Shannon has pencilled more issues of GI Joe than any other artist (with over 100 issues across several series) of GI Joe -, Starting in 2009 on GI Joe Rise Of Cobra movie Prequel, followed by 9 issues of Chuck Dixon’s GI Joe run before starting a long run on IDW’s ARAH with issue 161 In Dec 2010, , lasting to 245 in 2017 where he took a break to the GI Joe vs Six Million dollar man limited series. He has returned for an issue 263 in 2017 and is back for this issue, 283.

It is an oversized Talking Joe Podcast episode for an oversized arc!
This is the Finale of the Josh Blaylock Era, but how does it stand up to scrutiny from the Talking joe team? We talk Green shirts, meaningful deaths, colouring, if Serpentor is a Star Trek fan and if there is too much (but also not enough) story. All these questions and more (and simultaneously less) are asked on the latest instalment from the greatest GI Joe comics podcast.
