In this episode of The People Playbook with Coach Cora, Coach Cora sits down with Tony Alessandra, Founder of Assessments 24x7, to explore how tools like DISC are often misused—and how to apply them more effectively.
Drawing on decades of experience, Tony explains how assessments create a shared language for understanding behavior—especially under pressure—and where leaders go wrong by oversimplifying results. When used well, these tools improve communication, increase self-awareness, and drive stronger performance across teams.

Values aren’t defined by what leaders say—they’re revealed in the decisions they make when the stakes are high. In this episode of The People Playbook with Coach Cora, Coach Cora sits down with Preston Atkinson, President and CEO of Trestleworks and former CEO of Whataburger, to explore what it really means to lead through values.
Drawing on decades of leadership in legacy, community-rooted organizations, Preston shares how leaders drift when they prioritize being right over being aligned—and how that erodes trust inside teams. When values are consistently modeled, people stay engaged, extend grace, and remain committed to the organization’s long-term success.

Strong hiring isn’t about offering more—it’s about offering what actually aligns with the people you want to lead and keep. In this episode of The People Playbook with Coach Cora, Coach Cora is joined by Blanca Abbud, Vice President of Sales at Engage PEO, to explore how leaders can use benefits strategically rather than reactively when attracting talent.
Drawing from her work with organizations across industries, Blanca shares what candidates are really responding to in today’s market and where leaders often miss the mark with benefits design and communication. The conversation unpacks how life stage, flexibility, wellbeing, and clarity around total compensation influence candidate decisions, and why copy-and-paste benefits often attract the wrong fit.
If you’re a small business owner, executive, or people leader trying to attract the right talent without entering a costly perk arms race, this episode offers timely insight into how benefits can work for your business instead of against it.

Leadership teams don’t develop talent through instinct alone—they develop it through shared clarity about performance, readiness, and potential. In this episode of The People Playbook with Coach Cora, Coach Cora speaks with the Senior Director of Field Enhancements at Whataburger about what leaders actually learn when they begin using a talent matrix in a complex, field-based organization.
Drawing from real operational experience, the conversation explores how a structured talent framework changes the way leaders discuss high performers, identify potential, and challenge assumptions about their teams. The matrix itself isn’t the value—the value is the clarity it creates about development priorities, succession readiness, and where leaders may be overlooking or misjudging talent across the organization.

Retention isn’t driven by rewards alone — it’s driven by clarity around what success actually looks like. On this episode of The People Playbook with Coach Cora, Coach Cora sits down with Gerry Bower, President of TLC Total Lawn Care, to explore why onboarding and retention succeed only when expectations, hiring, and rewards are intentionally aligned.
Drawing from decades of experience in a labor-intensive, seasonal industry, Gerry shares what leaders often miss when teams struggle to stay engaged and committed. The conversation unpacks how unclear KRAs, inconsistent rewards, and misaligned hiring practices quietly erode trust; and how defining real contributions creates focus, fairness, and accountability across the organization.
If you’re a small business owner, executive, or people leader navigating retention challenges and wondering why good employees keep leaving, this episode will help you rethink how clarity (not perks) keeps teams together right now.

Hiring decisions don’t improve by removing judgment — they improve when leaders understand how to apply it more responsibly. On this episode of The People Playbook with Coach Cora, Coach Cora is joined by Amy Leslie, CEO of Perspective Inc., to explore how leaders can use data-driven hiring tools without losing the human insight that makes good decisions possible.
Drawing from her work with organizations implementing assessments and selection tools, Amy shares where leaders often misunderstand what hiring data is meant to do, how tools can clarify fit rather than create certainty, and why role definition and context matter more than the tool itself.
If you’re a business owner, executive, or people leader trying to hire more confidently without outsourcing judgment to a tool, this episode will help you make smarter, more accountable hiring decisions right now.

Hiring isn’t about convincing candidates to say yes — it’s about demonstrating that your leadership is worth committing to. On this episode of The People Playbook with Coach Cora, Coach Cora is joined by Katy Barger, Senior Technical Recruiter at Beacon Hill Recruiting, to explore what candidates are really saying.
Katy shares how top talent is evaluating roles through the lens of flexibility, salary transparency, and values alignment, and why outdated job descriptions and rushed decisions quietly undermine hiring success.
If you’re a small business owner, executive, or people leader who wants to attract capable talent — and keep them — this episode will help you rethink how your hiring process speaks before you ever make an offer.

In this episode of The People Playbook with Coach Cora, Coach Cora uses a live-coaching conversation to explore how strong specialty retail leaders adapt when the challenge isn’t leadership quality — it’s labor market reality.
Together with a seasoned retail owner, she works through real hiring constraints in real time, focusing on how redefining the work, adjusting role design, and making intentional tradeoffs can protect both the business and the customer experience. This episode offers a grounded look at how to make smart, sustainable people decisions without lowering standards or burning yourself out.

Join Tiffany and Kevin on this episode of "On The Record" as they sit down with special guest Reginald Ballard to discuss the urgent need for innovation in the pharmaceutical industry and the importance of acknowledging progress made in the fight against Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). As the Texas Kidney Foundation (TKF) continues to lead the charge in early detection, education, and support, Reginal shares his insights on the power of community and the importance of amplifying positive stories. Don't miss this thought-provoking conversation on the future of healthcare and the impact of proactive approaches to addressing CKD.
About the Texas Kidney Foundation:
Texas Kidney Foundation (TKF) is dedicated to the early detection of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). Because we know the difficulties that go along with CKD, we use a proactive approach to address the disease. We believe early detection, education, and support will help Texans maintain their quality of life. TKF began because there was a need for patient services in the San Antonio and Rio Grande Valley regions because the local chapter of the nation’s largest kidney foundation closed its doors and left the area. Unfortunately, they didn’t take kidney disease with them.
Luckily a tenacious transplant physician, Francis Wright, MD decided to create a foundation that would stand strong to serve our community, Texas Kidney Foundation (TKF). He gathered together a board of civic-minded people with a connection to renal disease. TKF has continued in that tradition.
In 2017 under new leadership TKF began to emerge as a state and national leader within the Kidney space. TKF embarked on the first leg of a statewide campaign called the Kidney C.A.R.E. (Clinician and Adult Renal Education) Campaign. The campaign addresses the lack of knowledge about CKD because the disease is overwhelming families all over Texas. According to the Center for Disease Control, 1 out of 3 adults with diabetes have CKD. Every day in the U.S. 130 diabetics begin treatment for kidney failure. TKF is the voice leading the charge to stop the CKD pandemic.
January 8, 2020, The State of Texas reestablished the previously abolished Texas Chronic Kidney Disease Task Force.

AJ's life has been a rollercoaster ride from his challenging upbringing to his triumphant battle against kidney disease, all while finding solace and humor in the world of stand-up comedy.
Hailing from Dallas, TX, but raised in Oklahoma, AJ faced adversity early on. Despite a rough start, he found stability and support when he was adopted by a loving family during high school. With their encouragement, AJ pursued his passion for football, earning a scholarship to Oklahoma State University.
However, AJ's life took a drastic turn when he was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney failure in 2016. Despite the gravity of the situation, AJ initially struggled to accept the reality of his condition, continuing his lifestyle without making necessary changes. It wasn't until a year later, after experiencing the harsh realities of dialysis and the loss of his twin brother, that AJ realized the need for a transformation.
In 2020, amidst his battle with kidney failure, AJ discovered the therapeutic power of comedy. Using social media as an outlet for his kidney-related jokes, AJ gained a following and eventually ventured into stand-up comedy. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, AJ's determination led him to Phoenix, where he embarked on his comedy journey.
In June 2022, AJ received a life-saving kidney transplant, marking a turning point in his life. With renewed health and purpose, AJ is committed to using his platform to raise awareness about kidney health and organ donation, while also providing support to those facing similar challenges.

LAURA THOMPSON CREATOR | CEO
I was a member of a collaborative space in San Antonio, Texas. The organization that will remain nameless offered members $25,000 to startup and kickstart their business. I was one of a few African American businesses that had a membership there. When TAAN TV attempted to apply for the startup capital, we were immediately told that they wouldn’t be interested in investing in TAAN TV. They told me that I should start a YouTube Channel and told us that there was no need for a channel that targeted the African American community. Needless to say, I didn’t listen to them.
Even before I was turned down for startup capital, I worked for a local Internet company in San Antonio, Texas, and saw how the Internet could support some type of television platform, I just didn’t know how the technology could work. That was in 1995. So I decided to register the domain name, The African American Network and kept it. I’ve owned the name for almost 26 years. What foresight!
When I was growing up, I didn’t like history because I didn’t see very many successful African Americans in the history books. I didn’t really like television because there were not very many positive stories or shows about African Americans. Most of the content was either negative, portrayed African Americans as uneducated, working in low-level positions, or making fun of African American people.
Instead of complaining about why there were no positive shows about African Americans, I decided to create a platform where I controlled the content, the length of the shows, and a platform that provided African Americans with a voice and means to tell their own stories. And thus the African American Network was born.
Now, we are one of the leading providers of original content for African Americans and content produced/created by African Americans.
TAAN TV is changing the way African Americans see themselves and is changing the perception of how others see us. TAAN TV – The African American Network has a Local Feel with a Global Reach!

About William Tutt
I began studying psychology in 1996 through 1999 at Alvin Community College under Dr. Al Cook, head of Psych. Dept, my mentor and personal friend. I concluded my education at Colorado Technical University. From June 2005 through June 2008 I conducted a study (cognitive processing of negative environmental influences by gang members)of 2325 gang members from different age groups, ethnicities, geographical location, social economic statuses and different back grounds. The research study was conducted to determine the degree of influence that negative environmental influences have on the decision making process of those in negative behaviour cycles.

Bexar County Criminal District Attorney Joe Gonzales took office in January of 2019 on a pledge to reform the office, restore public confidence, and make the office more accountable to the voters.
The primary duty of the District Attorney is to seek justice. In the course of its work, the Criminal District Attorney's Office works closely with victims of crime, law enforcement agencies, and the local community.
The Criminal District Attorney's Office analyzes all felony and most misdemeanor charges filed by law enforcement agencies in Bexar County, reviews these charges to decide if enough evidence exists for further prosecution, and determines how best to proceed in the interests of justice.
The District Attorney seeks to require defendants who are found guilty of a crime to take responsibility for their actions and for any harm they have caused, but also works to lessen recidivism, prevent crime, and make Bexar County a safer and better place to live, work and raise children.
In addition to responsibility for criminal prosecutions in Bexar County, the District Attorney also serves as legal counsel for Bexar County, county officials, and county employees in all matters related to their governmental functions.
