Now, more than ever, the workplace needs to bend to the workforce, not the other way around. The concept of the Digital Workplace has become real and more than likely forever. How does the combination of the new model of work blend with the work we have been doing from an HR perspective?
Leapgen and Jason Averbook are hosting this interactive digital meetup to foster collaboration and insight. As physical events become harder to make reality, virtual events are now mandatory.
Listen, contribute, and share ideas for navigating the new world of work!
In this episode, we hear the story of Vertex Pharmaceuticals, and it's a great one. Because their story is a people story. They've undergone tremendous transformation you might call Digital Transformation, but "digital" is a means to an end. At Vertex, transformation serves to amplify their tremendous culture and create talent velocity throughout the organization. Tune in to hear Kimberly Rose, Executive Director of People Experience, Analytics, and Digital Innovation in Human Resources ---- if a title doesn't illustrate the literal evolution of HR, we don't know what does. Kim shares how onboarding, career navigation, and managing people are all grounded in LISTENING TO PEOPLE at Vertex, and she reminds us one size does not fit all when it comes to employee experience.
Jess Von Bank is joined by guest co-host Tara Cooper, Market Analyst at Mercer. Together the duo tackle themes surrounding AI, HR technology, and community engagement. They share their insights on AI's impact on health and wellbeing, and the role of HR in navigating these changes. The discussion emphasizes the importance of education, inclusivity, and addressing disparities in wellbeing solutions, while also exploring cultural considerations in employee experience.
Our Now of Work community welcomed Stacey Harris of Sapient Insights Group, Zach Chertok from IDC, and Stacia Garr of RedThread Research to the meetup. This uber smart panel of industry analyst friends joins us at the onset of a busy HR Tech fall conference season to help SUMMARIZE đ 2024 so far and LOOK AHEAD đ to themes and challenges promising to carry us into 2025. So far, 2024 has been full of AI buzz, skills chatter, increased HR Technology investment, consolidation and optimization of tech stacks, and conservative growth. The global labor market continues to be challenged by inflation, geopolitical tensions, and technology changes. Employers struggle to retain talent and curb jobs growth amid waning GDP growth, but they're also dropping degree requirements and training workers for skilled tasks. Artificial Intelligence and the transition to net-zero emissions will have the biggest impact on jobs in the short term. Whether you're on the conference circuit this fall or heads down in boardrooms setting strategy for 2025, conversations are sure to be full of AI as a DOMINANT FORCE, transforming daily work routines into intelligent business processes. As always, data privacy and security will require rigorous problem solving and governance. AI will drive innovation in predictive analytics for talent, and we'll leverage design thinking to consider human-machine teaming in blended workforces with AI and bots. One thing is clear: human-centered technology is the Future of Work, and HR are the primary stewards of the human experience of work. Exciting, heady stuff, but much work to be done. LEARN, WEIGH IN, GET INSPIRED
We welcome Madeline Laurano back to our Meetup!
Are we getting a little broad and loose with the term Talent Intelligence? -- YEP. Madeline will explain. She'll also share new capabilities around #interview intelligence, hot-off-the-press insights from Workhuman, and a new research effort with Torin Ellis on reducing #bias with #AI.
Jason Averbook and Jess Von Bank share personal and work-related highs and lows, exploring their experiences of success, loss and powerful spelling capabilities.
With a twist, Jaycee Grider, Visual Design Consultant and podcast producer at Mercer, joins as a guest to share about her upcoming, first-time trip to Burning Man.
Whether you're a word enthusiast, a fan of personal stories, or simply looking for a delightful conversation to brighten your day, this podcast is a must-listen.
Jason and Jess are joined by Dan Beck, President and Chief Product Officer at SAP SuccessFactors to chat it up about the perfect storm of skills, intelligence, data, AI, and what's on Dan's radar as he completes his first year in his newest role at SAP.
Together, they explain the importance of skills and re-skilling in the digital age as well as the need for a cultural shift towards skills-based planning and the use of AI to automate and enhance the skills development process. It's so important to make skills management easier for employees and to use the potential for AI to drive business value and improve the employee experience.
In this conversation, Jason Averbook is joined by Katie Jenkins, Global Product Portfolio Director - Work Architecture @ Mercer, to discuss the importance of skills in the workplace and how organizations can leverage skills to make talent decisions. They explore the difference between skills and competencies and the challenges and opportunities of implementing a skills-based strategy. They emphasize the need for organizations to identify their biggest problems and use skills as a lens to address those issues. The conversation highlights the iterative nature of building a skills-powered organization and the role of AI in inferring skills and they emphasize the importance of assessing skills to retain and engage employees, especially those with unique skills. The discussion also touches on the value of skills data and the challenges of using it effectively in recruiting.

The Digital Meetup welcomes special guest Gerry Crispin.
Gerry has a bunch of well-founded data and well-formed suspicions about what education is likely to produce in the next 10 years if we don't intervene as employers.
Do we need to further pique interest? Gerry borrows from the 10 principles of Burning Man, including radical inclusion and transparency as a means to demonstrate fairness. Maybe this applies to his thinking around candidate experience and expectations, but what else does it apply to?
Takeaways
You deserve some TLC! Wind down from the work week with Jason and Jess as they catch up on their latest conference experience in Singapore, industry updates like the SHRM DEI announcement and, of course, a much needed Now of Work community check in.
As AI hiring tools have become increasingly more common and accessible, what does that mean for the future of work? Where does AI fit in a people-first recruiting approach? In this conversation, Jason Averbook and Jess Von Bank are joined by Ben Sesser, Co-founder and CEO of BrightHire, to discuss the process of hiring with assistance of AI and technology.
BrightHire is an AI copilot for hiring used by hundreds of companies. Their platform transforms the quality of interviews with AI that builds exceptional hiring plans, guides interviewers, automates interview notes, enhances decision quality, and delivers new talent insights. With BrightHireâs unqiue data collected from 1m+ interviews, theyâve identified their clients have seen recruiters save 3-5 hours per week, and across a study of 25,000 candidates, they saw a 27% reduction in the # of interviews per hire and a 19% reduction in candidate drop-off.
Ben Sesser, Co-founder & CEO, is joining todayâs meetup to share his thoughts on
1) How AI will change everything about knowledge work.
2) One of the most important reasons to still learn foundation knowledge even in the age of AI will be to fact and error check outputs.
3) But it will be increasingly hard to get students and young professional to learn the foundational knowledge because there will be less of a forcing function to do so.
With every period of innovation, throughout all of human history, the global workforce expands. In other words, new innovation creates new industries. Fact!
Does that seem counter-intuitive? Shifting of jobs to new industries, we understand. But we might also expect contraction of the global workforce when technology drives efficiency and new ways to create value. Shouldn't we need fewer people to get work done? Or does innovation not do that?
We're welcoming an expert on labor demographics and the working population of the world to help us understand.
BONUS: Guess which two segments of the workforce are growing the fastest?
In this episode, Bradley Schurman, Founder and CEO of Human Change, joins Jess and Jason to discuss the need to redefine productivity and effectiveness in the context of an aging workforce. The conversation touches on the challenges and opportunities of an aging population and the need for organizations to adapt to this demographic shift. They explore the relationship between technological advancements, such as AI, and the expansion of the workforce. Additionally, delving into the societal implications of an aging population, including appearance bias and the need for family-friendly policies
Could AI be like the Olympics? đ
Similarly, AI has various disciplines, lots of winners, even more losers, international collaboration, and strict governance. Success is measured by multiple metrics and there is no single finish line. Or is it a zero sum game? You either win or lose, game over.
While some aspects are still unfolding, we can already identify clear winners in this tech race. Companies like Apple, NVIDIA, and Microsoft are medalists to be sure. However, what happens when Apple doesnât need their OpenAI band-aid, er, partnership, any more? Where does Alphabet Inc. net out in all this? What happens to applications, platforms, point solutions, and market places? What does all of this have to do with HRTechnology and your experience architecture?
HR, the latest AI developments have EVERYTHING to do with your experience architecture. When Sam Altman called this a "printing press moment" before Congress last year, he meant the opportunity of technology to become a significant change agent in tipping the trajectory of things. We're already seeing proof in the world of work.
Jason Averbook and Jess Von Bank go over all the latest AI developments, share high-value use cases for Human Resources and the workforce beyond the obvious and they provide demonstrations of some of the best innovation we've seen.

Michael Kannisto runs a think tank called MindemicLab, which utilizes scenario planning, wargame simulation, and predictive modeling to help organizations develop strategies that will be effective across multiple possible futures.
Michael began his career as a research chemist, but quickly realized that while molecules always act predictably and consistently, people rarely do. He has spent much of his career in corporate Human Resources exploring the uncertainty that comes along with having humans in the workplace. Large, successful, well-funded organizations frequently experience failure when purchasing technology or implementing new policies. This is mainly the result of unanticipated changes that occur along the way. Michael started MindemicLab as a resource to help others ârehearseâ alternative futures, and thus increase their likelihood of success.
Prior/ongoing work in this area includes deep dives into The Future of Work, The Future of Early Career Recruiting and The Future of Disability.

Burnout, stress, and anxiety are omnipresent in the modern workplace. But it doesn't have to be this way for business leaders looking to make an impact while balancing their professional and personal lives.
Andrew Hartman is the Founder of Time Boss, an organization that helps leaders and their teams reinvent their relationships with time to get more done with less stress and anxiety. For the last 2 decades, Andrew has been a high-level professional managing his own schedule while working in marketing tech firms and software startups. About 5 years into his career, he began to burn out when he found there was more to do than there was time in the day. At 27, as the stress and anxiety built up, Andrew lost his sense of smell for six months.
âI decided to learn everything I could about making massive progress on my strategic priorities while maintaining my mental health so my family and well-being wouldn't be left in shambles.â
So, Andrew started implementing new habits to manage his time, allowing him to close the computer at the end of the day without stress. And it worked.
He has taken all he has learned over the years to build a simple system that helps business leaders avoid the same mistakes and chaos. The Time Boss Model is a distilled version of 15 years of learning. Andrew has run the experiments, made the mistakes, learned what works and what doesn't.
TUNE IN as we explore the common issues faced in time management among professionals, the addiction to the stress cycle, and practical tips for effective time management and setting healthy work boundaries.

Please join us in welcoming Skai Dalziel and Joe Facciolo, Co-Founders and Co-CEOs of Guusto! Today's discussion will delve into Guusto's history of building a culture of recognition from the head office to the frontlines.
Old pals, Skai Dalziel and Joe Facciolo, go all the way back to 1988 when they grew up together in a small town just north of Toronto. They both attended the University of Western Ontario, where Joe studied Psychology and Sociology, while Skai studied Engineering and Business. After graduating, they both traveled the world for a few years before returning home in the midst of the global financial crisis.
In 2008, they kickstarted their first business venture, Dining Tours (think high-end food and wine crawls). Despite local success, they were unable to expand without strong relationships with restaurants in other cities. Around 2012, Skai and Joe noticed that restaurants would often receive calls from people requesting to send a drink to a friend for a celebration or to show appreciation to a client. However, the staff would often refuse to take credit cards over the phone. Aha! There should be an app for this!
From 2012 to 2017, the pal duo built Guusto from the ground up. They partnered with a clean drinking water foundation that fueled their motivation. They pitched the product of Guusto to the Dragon's Den but walked away without a deal. They were also the first to raise equity crowdfunding in Canada. Around that time, they started working with HR leaders to build more robust employee recognition tools. They focused all their energy on customers and solving their problems.
After receiving a 1-star review on Glassdoor in 2019, Guusto recognized the irony of selling employee recognition tools but not using them internally. After this epiphany, Guusto completely transformed their business. The secret ingredient? CULTURE! Culture is the ultimate advantage.

Fair pay would be a big enough conversation on its own, but 98% of organization say they'll redesign work this year, we're seeking agility by becoming skills-powered organizations, and work models are becoming more and more hybrid and distributed.
Fair pay in the new world of work feels like a Slinky. Tune into this insightful chat with Charlie Franklin, CEO of Compa. Let's go!

Our Now of Work Digital Meetup hosts Jason Averbook and Jess Von Bank, closed out our last digital meetup of 2023 with our NOW Community.
Along with our active community members in the chat, Jess and Jason held an overview of 2023 regarding HR and HR Tech industry shifts, buzz words like Gen AI, and where they think (or hope) the ball will continue rolling in 2024.
You know how Spotify Wrapped is where Spotify listeners dive into their top listening moments of the year? We had our own version! We shared our own top listening moments of 2023 from the perspective of a few of the analysts who cover #HRTechnology.
Hosted by Jason Averbook and Jess Von Bank, we'll hear from analysts like Jim Holincheck, Madeline Laurano, Pete Tiliakos, Sarah White, Steve Goldberg, and Tara Cooper just what went down in 2023. What innovation got us excited, what are we over-rotating on, and what needs better solutions than we've come up with so far? Where is the ball going in 2024? Any guesses?
Hear it straight from the people who pay more attention to #WorkTech innovation than anyone else. It's a Special Edition of our Now of Work Digital Meetup
Consider this unprecedented scenario: the workforce now encompasses five distinct generations simultaneously. There's a pervasive market obsession with Gen Z, assuming their candidate and workforce expectations are uniquely special. Is this assumption accurate or merely a misconception?
In the quest to attract workers spanning five generations, the question arises: is it necessary for employers to tailor experiences for each generational persona, or could this approach be characterized as over-engineering, perhaps even stereotyping? Can GenAI and storytelling authenticity truly coexist? In an era where scalability makes fabrication effortless, how does a brand remain faithful to its ethos?
Our special guest, Summer Baruth, Head of Global Employer Brand & Talent Attraction at AECOM, brought her extensive expertise in employer branding and diverse candidate experiences across multiple industries and multiple generations to join Jess Von Bank and Jason Averbook in unraveling these intricacies and navigating the evolving landscape together.
So much of the innovation happening in the HR Tech space is about new ways of working. You can't just "shop for AI" and get the organization on board overnight. You can't download a skills ontology to automagically change the way your company hires and promotes people. Please don't buy a CRM just because you're having a hard time competing for talent. These are all TOOLS. Tools build what you tell them to. Don't leave the drawing board until you know the outcomes you need; then you'll know the right tools.
HR Tech providers are driving a ton of innovation, and it's all way ahead of their buyers' ability to consume it all. Should they slow down? Nope. But it does change how they go to market, how they position and sell to you, the incremental value they demonstrate and the change support they offer to help you get there. For the reallllly bright shiny stuff, it means providers have to train and educate the market more than they have before.
Michael Johnson has dedicated a career to driving revenue and growth strategies for some of the most innovative HR technologies in the industry. He weighs in with Jason and Jess on how HR Tech providers can win the market in 2024.
Did anyone pay attention to the HR Technology Conference & Exposition's Pitchfest winners?
The big winner digitally consolidates 401(k) plans. You know, rather than manually. That's how much basic blocking & tackling we still have left to do when driving innovation for business and making all of our work lives better.
Another winner we loved is CollabWORK, who also addresses a pretty fundamental talent problem. We all love hiring referrals, but we don't think outside the box when it comes to connecting with the seven degrees of separation of our high performers and hard-to-source talent.
Summer Delaney, CEO and Founder of CollabWORK explains their community-based hiring approach. Yes, they use AI, but that wasn't the big story. In fact, they might have won because they take a pretty cautious but intelligent approach.
Tune in!
Before you listen to this epsidoe, give yourself 5 minutes to read an incredible story.
One of the defining moments of the Afghanistan War occurred in a mere second inside a single battle that raged for 7 hours. Then 37-year-old United States Army Captain Will Swenson found himself a commander in what would become known as the Battle of Ganjgal. An early morning meeting connecting the Afghan government with native elders in the Ganjgal Valley near the border of Pakistan turned into a brutal ambush of Swenson's 100-person coalition. Surrounded by as many as 60 well-armed Taliban fighters unleashing a barrage of rocket-propelled grenades, mortar, and machine gun fire, repeated calls for overheard artillery support were denied for fear of civilian casualties. Denied all day, in fact, while Swenson and his men fended for themselves under unrelenting artillery fire.
Rare helmet-cam footage from a medical evacuation team caught much of the extraordinary scene. Including Swenson repeatedly waving a bright orange flag to guide a military rescue helicopter into a safe landing zone to retrieve the injured and pull out the dead. Swenson waved the brightly colored flag throughout the day, making himself a highly visible target to enemy fighters but ensuring the helicopter could load injured and dying men to receive medical attention.
At one point, we see Captain Swenson loading Sergeant Kenneth Westbrook into the chopper. Westbrook, a father of three, had been shot in the neck and was bleeding heavily. He also had four broken ribs, a punctured lung, and a shattered left shoulder. He would die 29 days later from these injuries. But this day, Swenson hoped he could be saved. He is seen carrying Westbrook onto the helicopter, and the GoPro camera on the med evac's helmet captured another fleeting moment almost no one would have seen. Swenson is seen leaning into the helicopter and giving Westbrook a kiss on his cheek before the helicopter side door closes. A moment never intended to be captured on film. A moment Swenson himself hardly remembered. A moment of true leadership.
Swenson's kiss on a battlefield was a catalyst for Dr. Kirstin Ferguson to write her latest book, Head & Heart: The Art of Modern Leadership. Our own Jess Von Bank met Dr. Ferguson at Oracle CloudWorld just weeks ago. Dr. Ferguson was fresh out of books that afternoon after a successful book signing, so she sent one to the restaurant to be handed to Jess later at dinner. Jess carried the book all over Las Vegas that night, dying to tear into its pages, and today they finally bring this conversation to the Now of Work community.
ON THIS EPISODE, WAIT UNTIL YOU MEET Dr. Ferguson. Former Flying Officer in the Royal Australian Air Force herself, she went on to become a PhD in Organizational Psychology, CEO of a global consulting firm, and best-selling global leadership expert on the impact of leading from the head and the heart.
Jason Averbook and Jess Von Bank are back in action and they were so happy to catch up with our Now of Work community.
The past couple of months of conference season have been a whirlwind of innovation, thought-provoking conversations, and valuable connections and we are eager to share our experiences and check in with all of you.
And in this episode, Jason poses a critical theory: that skills may be considered more valuable than credentials. Along with the amazing insight and ideas form our live attendees in the chat, Jess and Jason break down their own thoughts on the value that employees bring to the workforce and how the future of work is molding to be more human-centric.
Tune in!
UNLEASH World is a wrap, and it was a vibrant display of community, learning and innovation. Teeming with content, rich with innovative voices, and a spectacle of creative solutions from some of the best HR technology providers in the world, the show was just that: A SHOWING OF WHAT IS POSSIBLE when it comes to people and work.
UNLEASH World was emceed by David Green and our own Jess Von Bank, and for this episode, David is Jess' special guest co-host. They shared everything they learned and observed of the event circuit, where the brightest minds and problem solvers came together to shape the future workplace.
Tune in to our conversation with Marc Coleman, Founder and CEO of UNLEASH, to learn all about the behind the scenes of UNLEASH conferences.
"People donât want to be perceived as being weak or incompetent. Think about that for a moment. Of course if you show up to work every day talking about your failures, challenges, mistakes, struggles, and emotions, then it stands to reason that eventually your peers and leaders are going to look at you and say, 'maybe you shouldnât be in this role.' The solution to this is what I call The Vulnerable Leader Equation..."
Jess Von Bank spoke with 5X Best-Selling Author, Jacob Morgan, on TODAY'S Digital Meetup at 1P ET, about a crucial topic that can impact building a human-centric workforce: How to lead with vulnerability and still be an effective leader.
While vulnerability may cripple some leaders, others can leverage it and use it as a superpower. Jacob believes this and interviewed over 100 CEOs of companies like GE, American Airlines, Hyatt, The Home Depot, and SAP, to prove it in his latest book: Leading with Vulnerability: Unlock Your Greatest Superpower to Transform Yourself, Your Team, and Your Organization.
On our blog Jacob wrote: "Itâs clear why vulnerability is so important in our personal lives because it creates connection, trust, relationships, and simply put, itâs a human thing to do. But what about inside of our organizations where we have a very different dynamic at play?"
How can you make vulnerability your superpower?

The origin story of making this episode happen all started with a social media thread. This one, in fact: https://bit.ly/3RvUNBE
Industry advisor, Steve Goldberg posted something about onboarding as IMMERSION in job, team and culture --- which got my co-host Jess Von Bank's quick response and the attention of Meg Bear, President & SPO of SAP SuccessFactors, and Gordon Ritchie, Principal Consultant, Skills Architecture & Transformation at Skill Collective.
So we decided to take this conversation to the community. We hashed out one of the most important moments that matter for your workforce â and the biggest ROI opportunity for business. Jess likes to call it Onboarding & Ongoing. How can we treat this critical step in the talent journey as a strategic launchpad and not a tactical checklist? Especially as so many organizations profess to become skills-based, to prioritize employee well-being, and to create true connection to corporate values?
A platform that gives employees the freedom and flexibility to choose the type of benefits that they want to fit their own personal needs? Sign us up! We can't wait for you to listen to our chat about employee experience, the data behind diversifying benefits, and the how Compt is changing the NOW and future of work with Amy Spurling, CEO and Founder of Compt
Compt's mission is simple. They help companies build and scale flexible employee perks, stipends, and rewards that delight teams. Named the Innovative HR Platform of the Year in 2021, Compt supports global teams with fully customizable HR Tech software to fit a company's needs. Whether it's a health and wellness stipend, student loan stipend or equipment stipend, they believe that benefits should and can align with an employee's life stage. In this new world of work Compt believes that "Fair pay and health insurance are merely table stakes. To truly support your team, remain competitive, and retain top talent, you must offer meaningful benefits to every lifestyle."
Their CEO, Amy's experience as a former three-time CFO and two-time COO managing Finance and HR fuels Compt's belief that companies and employees can achieve much more together when employees are fully supported.
We talk a big game when it comes to workforce experience, culture, and employment opportunities. But for vast portions of the world's potential labor market, getting a job depends on getting TO a job. Transportation itself is a vehicle to opportunity.Â
Meet Boyd Reid and Erich Ko, two sons of immigrant families, the co-founders of Hop In Technologies, who understood this when they decided to solve the problem of work by solving the problem of accessible work. Oh, and there's a silver lining, too.Â
By solving for mass transit to major employers, we can make a collective dent in ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) initiatives. It's a win-win: increasing employment and quality of life by getting more people to work, raising the economic viability of more of our communities, creating community by taking better care of people where you live, and addressing a really common recruiting and retention problem in sectors like manufacturing, retail, hospitality, and healthcare.Â
Headed to HR Technology Conference on Oct 10-13? Still on the fence? Reason #117 to go (you could say #1 reason): The Women in HR Technology Summit is included in your premium pass, and it's the only conference program like it.
Jeanne Achille is the Program Chair for Women in HR Tech, and she covered the origins of this powerful summit with my co-host, Jess Von Bank! HR is dominated by women, even at executive levels where the numbers normally skew toward men. So why this summit and these topics?
Jess and Jeanne also discussed the programming for Women in HR Tech, which includes six sessions and keynotes designed to provide valuable insights into topics that impact everyone in the workforce, including how to generate new leadership opportunities for women, and how to build cultures of trust.Â
In this episode, you'll get an exclusive sneak peek of the speakers and content from Heather Bussing, Jennifer Dole, Marilyn Pearson Hendricks, and Sarah J. Rodehorst. They all popped into our Now of Work community meetup to preview conversations around technology-supported gender equality, driving organizational change, the power of culture, and pay equity.
Everyone is talking about AIâ how to use it, what jobs it might do, and who or what tasks it might replace. Like any tool, it has the potential to fundamentally change the nature of work, and it will absolutely reshape the skills people need to be successful.
That's why we were excited to have two special guests join us on this episode of the Digital Meetup! Jess and I welcomed Katarina Berg, CHRO of Spotify, and Dr Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic, Chief Innovation Officer of ManpowerGroup, to our Now of Work Community. We talked about the impact of #AI on skills in the workplace, how AI is changing the nature of work, plus the risks and opportunities for the human side of the equation.
Katarina led the Spotify's talent transformation when they grew from a startup to an international company. She excels at reinventing processes to establish an environment where creative people can thrive. We loved talking with her about the impact of AI and organizational reengineering, and how to achieve great business results during times of great change.
In addition to his role at ManPower Group; a global staffing and recruitment firm, Dr. Tomas is a social scientist and associate at Harvardâs Entrepreneurial Finance Lab. He's written 12 books, including his latest: I, Human: AI, Automation, and the Quest to Reclaim What Makes Us Unique. We picked his brain for his thoughts on AI, the psychology of talent, and how science-based tools can improve an organization's ability to predict performance.
Don't call it retirement. Lexy Martin said that she's simply 'redirecting.' "I can't stand the word 'retire' and I failed the first time I did so, but this time, it will take." Lexy may be leaving Visier after 55 years in the HR Tech and people analytics business, but she will redirect her energy to passion projects, pursuing a future self that will satisfy her as much as research.
That's quite the thing at 78 years old. To have contributed 5 decades and a giant legacy to the HR Technology industry and know you haven't done everything that satisfies you yet.
But, couldn't let Lexy "redirect," without giving her a proper toast and send off! Listen here for a special industry farewell to Lexy Martin. We walked down memory lane of her 55 year career, shared her learnings, and had some amazing stories from other special guests that have been instrumental to her contributions over the years.
If you're lucky enough to know Lexy, you know she's both a Master Researcher and Master Gardener, an early pioneer of People Analytics and vocal advocate for inclusive solution design, an avid world traveler, and one of the first women analysts in work tech. "Lexy has been my cheerleader from the start, as I have been hers, and I am one of AT LEAST 100 WOMEN who can say that," my co-host Jess Von Bank shared.

On today's Digital Meetup, we talked about the Perceptyx and Hum acquisition and what it means for the future of the employee experience. Jess Von Bank and I were so excited to welcome Lisa Sterling, Perceptyx's Chief People Officer, to our live broadcast!
Perceptyx is a top employee listening and manager effectiveness platform. Humu is a tech tool that uses science-based ânudgesâ to influence positive behavior change and improve business performance. With this acquisition, Humu is poised to solve a big challenge when it comes to employee listening.
"Perceptyx will integrate Humuâs extensive library of behavior nudges in its People Insights Platform, allowing organizations to deliver personalized nudges to both leaders and employees, customized to the behavior each individual or team wants to improve. Perceptyx will be the first company to enable a 'nudge' process that engages the entire workforce to take action and make work better," they shared in their press release.
Our special guest, Lisa Sterling, is a listening expert exclusively focused on EX, with a deep portfolio of listening tech and intellectual capital. "This acquisition will change the game for Perceptyx, our people, our customers and their people," she explained.
Jess Von Bank and I introduced Sam Beiler to our interactive chat. Sam is the CEO/ Co-founder of Boostpoint, which uses AI to target and place highly personalized recruitment ads on social media.
Their platform combines technology, social media, text messaging, and recruiting strategies to help leaders attract more qualified candidates, simplify hiring, and boost their employer brand.
We could not wait to chat with Sam about AI's impact on recruiting and social media, how bias and privacy laws can impact recruitment practices, and how the face of recruiting and job hunting has changed. "AI should be the connecting point between humans and the organization. Not the sole replacement," Sam shared.
Jim Holincheck, Principal of Transformation Services here at Mercer/Leapgen also joined in on our discussion to share highlights from our recent Generative AI for HR webinar. Did you catch it? Jim and I provided a recap of the webinar, which included how Generative AI is transforming HR leadership and what actions leaders should take to support the growth of their organizations.
With over 54% of organizations dipping their toes into the Generative AI pool, but only 18% implementing it, you'll definitely want to give this episode a listen!
"My parents were born to sharecroppers in Southern Georgia. (They) would have to miss school to pick cotton during harvest season. I saw these messages of bias, racism, and oppression, even as a child...Whatever environment you're in there's a label that is either thrust upon you or that you cling to for recognition. So, I've always been intrigued by this work. When youâre imbued with empathy⌠when you see injustice around you, you can either be part of the solution or part of the problem. And my goal is to be part of the solution."
Marc is the SVP of Racial & Social Equity and Culture at California Life Sciences. His goal is to make the life sciences industry more diverse and equitable. He also spearheaded the first DEI program at Vail Resorts, creating an intentional cultural shift within their employee and customer experience efforts, to create a more inclusive space for their workforce and clientele.
Kate Graham joined us as our special guest co-host on this episode of our NOW Digital Meetup. Kate has an incredible track record providing clear voice and a healthy perspective on the trends, challenges, and innovations relevant to people, work, and technology.Â
We loved following her work at Fosway Group and UNLEASH. Now it's time to check in on Kate's recent move back to the vendor side (what a win for Cornerstone OnDemand!). She had some really fantastic advice for both HRÂ Tech vendors AND consumers. It has to do with transparency, being realistic, and better storytelling. Kate and I can't wait to bring this fresh conversation to the community.Â
BTW, where's Jess Von Bank? She checked in from the course during our Meetup to share their progress! If you've been following us for a while, you know Jess loves to race. During this epsidoe, Jess began a 200-mile Ragnar Relay from the Canadian border (Blaine, WA), running along the glacial Cascade and Olympic Mountain ranges, Deception Pass, and Puget Sound before she crossed the finish line with her team on Whidbey Island, sometime in the afternoon. Go, Jess!Â
Driving transformation in any organization is a journey, even an uphill battle. Driving transformation in an industry absolutely begging for disruption is uniquely challenging. Healthcare is one of those industries -- HR is constantly challenged with talent shortages, workforce burnout, demands for improved well-being and workforce experience, lagging innovation, and evolving measures of success for consumer satisfaction and patient delivery outcomes.
Designing an effective, inspiring, caring workforce experience matters a LOT in healthcare. That's the job of Tobias Washington at CHRISTUS Health, and he shared his story and their organization's journey on this episode of the Now of Work Digital Meetup.
Tobias is the System Director of Digital Employee Experience & Digital HR Transformation at CHRISTUS Health. He is an amazing leader working in the healthcare space, that is truly transforming how HR and work is done.Â
Wonder what the future of work holds? Nela Richardson, Chief Economist at ADP and co-head of the ADP Research Institute, alongside Marcus Buckingham, shared her predictions during our Digital Meetup!
In my opinion, Nela Richardson is one of the best researchers in the world on the economy, jobs, and work. If you are thinking about the workforce, job trends, HR, or HRTech, listen to this interactive chat with Jess Von Bank, Nela Richardson, and I.Â
the global economy, work and labor market trends, the impact of Generative AI on the job market, and what the future holds. Nela also dives into what ADP is doing to prepare HR for the changing world of work. Understanding the Future of Work is to understand macro trends in the global economy and labor market. So far, 2023 checks the box on a lot of macro trends, including slowing global growth with advanced economies contributing the least, the return of inflation, rising wages in pockets, but a decline in productivity and a smaller labor force. 4B people now have access to the internet, or half the world population. That's four times what it used to be, illustrating a growing digital economy.Â
Do you read every email you get from your employer and HR department? Imagine if you got a text notification instead at the beginning of your shift? Because they know when your shift starts and that youâre primarily mobile. Or imagine if you were a salesperson who spends most of your time in Salesforce, so thatâs where personalized communications go for you! Right in the newsfeed in the system where you spend most of your time.
In other words, imagine if your employer really knew you and met you where you are? Instead of spamming the workforce with everything you might possibly need but canât possibly read?Â
Intelligent communication has the power to shape and create exceptional, frictionless Employee Experiences. This not only boosts efficiency and productivity, making it easier for employees to perform, but also demonstrates care and empathy during critical moments that matter.
Jess Von Bank and I loved chatting with Nicole Alvino, CEO of Firstup and Sabra Sciolaro, their CPO, on our Digital Meetup. Nicole and Sabra joined us in discussing: how organizations can make intelligent communication an integral part of your Employee Experience plan, their highlights from our recent webinar, and their newly launched white paper.
We welcomed Adam Binnie, Visier's Chief Product Officer, to our Digital Meetup! Visier unleashed some amazing new product announcements recently, and Jess Von Bank and I can't wait to dig in!
Team Visier is always pushing the envelope on innovation and their newly released HR Tech products illustrate that drive. They are on a mission to make an impact on AI with the launch of 'Vee,' a powerful new generative AI digital assistant, designed to make people analytics accessible to everyone. It allows users of all proficiency levels to ask questions about their workforce, explore available datasets, and drive action after finding critical insights.
Adam will shares details about Visier's 'Smart Compensation' launch, another new product designed to take the complexity out of compensation planning with a simpler, data-driven approach. The new tool is designed to address challenges like pay transparency, retention, and pay conversation preparation.
We are honored to have Adam join us to share the excitement around the world of data analytics, generative AI, and HR analytics. This is one of the most important areas that HR can focus on today, and will continue to gain momentum moving forward.
Ben Brooks, Founder & CEO of PILOT Inc. joins our Jason Averbook JESS VON BANK to share the pros & cons of #remoteworking and how he continues to lead a business, connect with his team, and find #worklifebalance. Ben Brooks has been working (literally) all over the world, and today he joins us from beautiful Bozeman, Montana. He has two burning questions for Jason & Jess: is #HR really making decisions based on quantitative data, or do we rely on narrative and #storytelling? We also talk a big game around developing people, but it feels like we spend too much time on the smallest bucket of people who need it.
MEATY discussion in store -- against Ben's stunning backdrop, we have no doubt.
I welcomed Luc HÊdou, CEO of Workaxle, to discuss the latest innovation in Workforce Management. Innovation in Workforce Management? It's true! A shift is happening. When it comes to improvement to Workforce Experience, Workforce Management (WFM) makes a MUCH BIGGER DENT than your Core HR. Trust me.
In fact, weâre seeing WFM shift to Phase I transformation work more and more often. Weâre seeing scheduling solutions make a world of difference to productivity and retention, and weâre seeing significant experience payoffs when organizations invest in WFM. Yes, Workforce Management is time and attendance. Itâs also demand forecasting, scheduling and rostering, leave and absence management, and on-demand wages. These are make-or-break moments that matter when it comes to day-to-day workforce experience. Thatâs why a little goes a long way when you double down on Workforce Management, and itâs also why starting here can be the trigger for changing your entire HR Tech stack.
In the Now of Work, time and talent are at a premium and waste is expensive. Leveraging the power of your WFM solution is key, especially if you want to impact Employee Experience in an measurable way. How else can organizations increase efficiency, meet customer demand with talent supply, and change the way people work?
Today my co-host, Jess Von Bank and I discussed the industry news of the week during our live, unscripted show. We will also checked in with our amazing audience and their questions about HR, HR Tech, employee experience, work-life balance, leadership, and humanizing work during our open Q&A on all things Now of Work.Â
The Now of Work is a movement to better serve humanity by humanizing work. This movement represents the humanization and digital disruption of work during the most historic labor market and business cycles weâve seen in modern times. People are calling the shots, and weâre calling them differently.Â
Are you craving community and inspiration? Jess Von Bank and I talk all things HR, HR Tech, and humanizing work. We also had a little surprise in store for our listeners... On today's episode, Amanda Hahn, Chief Marketing Officer of HireVue surprised us live!
HireVue is an organization that helps global enterprises gain a competitive advantage in the modern talent marketplace with video interviewing software, conversational AI, and pre-hire assessments. Together we chat about getting the full view of PEOPLE while leveraging tools that HireVue uses to transform the way companies discover, hire, and develop talent. By combining video interviews with predictive, validated IO science and artificial intelligence (AI), HireVue augments human decision-making in the hiring process and delivers higher quality talent, faster.
Together Jess, Amanda and I discuss the utilization of talent acquisition tech platforms and how they help to better evaluate skills, capabilities, and future potential in the hiring process.
The new Now of Work is constantly changing. With people at the heart of the workforce, they make global work and productivity churn at a rapid pace. Inclusion is a big part of that. "DEIB is always evolving and I try to stay immersed in whatâs happening and whatâs next," Brook Sims tells us. Brook is the COO of MAC Diversity Recruiters and we are excited for you to hear more from our chat with her.
You may remember that we featured Brook's company on our social media channels a few months ago, as one to watch, and their growth is proof. MAC provides recruiting services to large companies in fields like engineering, investment banking, and information technology. They believe that a diverse workforce powers the future and that employers should be reflective of the communities in which they exist and serve. Their mission is to "lead the transformation of the workforce by being the bridge that provides access and opportunity to the most exceptional talent and helps clients achieve increased profitability, innovation, and success."
MAC recently launched their sister company, MAC Digital, which specializes in Marketing, eCommerce, and Software talent recruitment with a focus on AI, and ensuring that AI is implemented in an inclusive way.
Before leading MAC, Brook was an Executive Recruiter and Head of Diversity at JPMorgan Chase & Co. and First United Bank. Jess and I can't wait to chat with her about the changes she's seeing in DEIB, what happens when AI is added to the mix, and what steps leaders can take to ensure a more inclusive future.
Dazzling. Innovative. Memorable. This week our team attended #UNLEASHAmerica in Las Vegas and we had a wonderful experience. Jess Von Bank and I spilled all of the details and shared highlights from the pre-event and two-day #HR #HRTech conference.
From the futuristic acrobats to the forward-thinking speakers, we were not only proud to be in the room, but also to be Diamond Sponsors of an event that attracts the world's brightest HR leaders, who come to do business and learn. They shared their trials, triumphs, and strategies for navigating in today's #NowofWork.
We were happy to be among them. Jess moderated the inaugural UNLEASH Vendor Summit, and I facilitated the HR Tech and Transformation Summit, and moderated the main program.
Our team connected with new and familiar faces in our booth to discuss their #digital HR strategy and transformation goals. We hosted a Health Advisory Council breakfast with ourLuminate crew and Sense, networked with colleagues at an After Dark bowling experience, and had a meet and greet to bond with our new Mercer colleagues!
Lots of happenings, connections made, insights gained, and thoughts shared about the future of HR and HR Technology in our industry. We can't wait to tell you all about it!
"Human Capital is not some subset of 'HR.' Itâs less about process and more about people, the culture they desire, and a vested commitment to the development of their skills." Â
Jess Elqmuist is the CHRO and Chief Evangelist at Phenom, a company whose mission is to help 1 billion people find the right job. Their Talent Experience platform bridges people, data, and interactions to great experiences, using AI and automation, so that leaders can hire faster and retain their employees. What Jess enjoys most is helping C-suite leaders maximize the potential of their team.
"My best days are when Iâm bringing solutions to CEOs and CHROs that help their workforces run at peak performance. And I do it from the perspective of a people and workplace culture executive who believes in the power of human capital to help organizations thrive."
Jess Von Bank and I welcomed our Special Guest: Jess Elmquist, to talk about putting the HUMAN back into HR and how leaders can find, develop and retain the best talent using 3-Ps: Purpose, People & Process.
There is no shortage of leadership coaches, keynote speakers, motivational platforms, and business books teaching us about how to better connect with and inspire the workforce. We're not even a stranger to the idea of EMPATHY, but is anyone truly putting this into practice in a meaningful way? In business? With measurable impact?
Eric M. Bailey digs deeper into the concept of UNCONDITIONAL EMPATHY and illustrates what it looks like in practice with a leadership and communication methodology grounded in brain science and psychology. Â
Eric is an innovative leader and the President of Bailey Strategic Innovation Group, which helps organizations unlock their full potential-fast. He has worked with companies like Google, been featured in Forbes and HuffPost, and hosts a 2-minute YouTube series on leadership called The Walking Meeting.Â
How do some companies create dynamic, inclusive work cultures, while others struggle to connect? What does it really take for leaders to create a workplace that is welcoming to all?
Jess and I were so excited to have a chat about equity at work on today's Digital Meetup, with Michael Bush, CEOof Great Place To Work US. Although, Brian Reavesâ â , Chief Belonging,Diversity, and Equity Officer, â â UKGâ â could not join us today, Jess, Michael and I discussed their concept of "For All Leadership," and what it takes for EVERY employer to be great. We also dove into why UKG and GreatPlace to Work are the perfect match, and what they're setting out to do together. Did you know that inclusive cultures outperform the stock performance of less inclusive companies by 400%?
Together we addressed employee experience, gnerational experiences and gap in the workplace, where the world of work is headed, short-term action and reaction business cycles, and what every company needs to think about over the long haul, not just for quarterly results!
This latest episode was recorded on March 31, International Transgender Day of Visibility. It is also the day that our friend, Sarah Reynolds, a leader and incredible marketer, was formally announced as HiBob's new Chief Marketing Officer. What a day to celebrate Sarah, and what a day to celebrate trans and non-binary people in our workforces and everywhere!
Sarah (they/them) is non-binary and transgendered. They are well-versed in the power of bringing your full, authentic self to the workplace. Everyone wins when diversity is not only welcomed but infused in talent, solution, and experience design.
We're proud of our Now of Work community for the space we've created for humanity to thrive at work!
Progress in the making: McDonald's commitment to diversity has stretched for decades. They went international in 1967. In 1968, their first restaurant owned by an African-American person opened their doors. The same year McDonalds allowed women to work as crew members in company-owned restaurants, for the first time.Â
Fast forward to the 1980s, when one of their Hispanic franchise owners launched the scholarship fund that's awarded $32M in funds to date. In 1986, they launched the "Silent Persuasion" campaign, becoming the first quick service restaurant with a commercial in American sign language.
In 2000, McDonald's was named named Fortune magazineâs Most Admired Company for Social Responsibility. In 2004, they formed their first Global Diversity Advisory Council, and just last year that council engaged our own Jess Von Bank to coach them on new ways to view talent and remove barriers.
Jess and I introduce you to Reginald Miller, Chief Diversity Officer at McDonald's, and the mastermind behind ALL of this since he joined McD's executive ranks in 2020. Hear about his progress since then and his ongoing plans for approaching Career, Culture and Care from a DEI perspective.
Fun fact: Reggie also claims to know more about Star Wars than almost anyone!
It's all about the green. Jess Von Bank and I are joined by two industry experts: Jason Corsello, Founder and General Partner at Acadian Ventures, and Scott Berg, Managing Director, Sr. Research Analyst at Needham & Company. Together, we dove into last week's financial collapse of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank and how this impacts the HR and HR Tech industry. We explained our expectations for short and long term impacts!
All industry professionals passionate about HR, the HR Technology vendor community, and where we go from here are encouraged to listen. The world is at a crossroads again around banking, investing, and how innovation continues to be funded in the world of HR and HR technology. Let's learn together!
As leaders we might be okay alone, but we're much more powerful when we work together. We started our Friday Digital Meetups in 2020 to do just that, build community at a time when we needed togetherness. Three years later, that sentiment still holds true. To thrive in today's rapidly changing Now of Work, we need each other and we need to be REAL about our wins and challenges, to move forward.Â
Today, Jess Von Bank and I hosted a 'Community Be Real Session' on our Digital Meetup! We held an open, honest and unscripted discussion about being human. Our listeners shared their wins and challenges at work and at home. Together we discussed the support we each need most as leaders to thrive and humanize our workforce experiences.
Here we GROW! You may have heard our big news. Leapgen has joined Mercer US. Our new name is Mercer | Leapgen! The Press Release is hot off the press bit.ly/3EIenDu along with an article in Human Resource Executive; take a read: http://bit.ly/3KMgBVZ.
Five years ago, we set out on a BOLD mission to change the way the world works. That means changing an entire industry, leading enterprises as well as vendors on their transformation journeys in the NOW of Work, and shaping new thinking to help organizations BE digital, not just DO digital.
It was a pretty audacious vision. When we learned that Mercer shared the same vision, we had to go BIG. Our work continues as part of Mercer, and our values remain the same. When you do what you LOVE in the service of others, it generates ENERGY, inspires AUDACITY, and produces PROOF we can all feel.
Joining Mercer will enable us to offer our clients a full suite of solutions. Mercer is dedicated to bringing world-leading insight and innovation to companies, just like we are.
Jess Von Bank and I welcomed our new colleague, Ilya Bonic, President of Mercerâs Career Practice and Head of Mercer Strategy to the Now of Work community. We talked about the acquisition, how it will change the landscape for HR Tech, enterprise transformation work for people and work insights, and our big, bright hope for the future of work!
James Ellis is a world-renowned expert on employer brand on a mission to create 1 million employer brand thinkers! It would take a former digital marketer and inbound audience expert to understand how brands can better connect to talent; this is why James does a brilliant job connecting digital marketing to talent marketing.
Jess Von Bank and I had a TON of questions for James. We asked him questions like:
...And why are we still calling all of this employer branding? The brand is the brand is the brand â doesnât really matter if Iâm a job seeker, an employee, part of your supply chain, an alumni, or a customer â does it?Â
There was so much to unpack in one of the most chaotic (JVB would say disrespectful) candidate markets weâve seen in a while.Â
Dr. Denise Caleb, President of Human Resource Standards Institute (HRSI), joined Jess Von Bank and Ryan Malkes, our Senior Consultant and Services Innovation Director, to discuss how to: build a sustainable DEIB practice, celebrate proof of progress on organizational efforts to move the needle on diversity, and her Spring HR Technology Conference keynote (Feb. 28, 2023) on The Role of DEIB in Organizational Readiness.
Human Resource Standards Institute (HRSI) offers organizational certifications that are based on (ISO) human resources management (HRM) standards. They help organizations understand best practices in the industry.
During her keynote, she'll discuss her DEIB research and how effective diversity programs result in higher-performing work cultures. Dr. Caleb will also talk about being a C-suite executive, an Army spouse, a mother of three, a caregiver, and an advocate for her neurodiverse son, who is on the autism spectrum. Register for the HR Tech Conference today!
We learn something great from her every time we talk! On this Now of Work episode, we welcome Anne Sample. Anne is the CEO of Navigate Forward, an organization that supports senior executives who are in a career transition or planning one in the future. They help leaders rediscover their passion and place in the business community.Â
Jess Von Bank, Jason Averbook, and Anne discuss the insights and trends that she sees in career planning, internal mobility, the job market and how HR can keep up with the rapidly changing world around us.
Anne is also a globally renowned CHRO and has held key HR leadership positions in organizations like Thrivent and PepsiCo before leading Navigate Forward.Â

Happy 2023! We hope that your New Year is off to a productive start. Jess Von Bank and Jason Averbook couldn't wait to reconnect with the community during the first Digital Meetup of the new year. Our special guest is Jason Corsello, Founder and General Partner of Acadian Ventures. Acadian Ventures is an early-stage venture capital firm specializing in the future of work.
Listen in as they discuss which trends Jason C. is seeing in the economy and the impact they have on the HR Tech space, the biggest areas of spending in the HR technology world for 2023, where software is being developed and how globalization is helping the space.
The countdown is upon us! We're just about two weeks away from 2023. During this Digital Meetup, we close out 2022 with an HR and HR Tech market wrap. We're also focused on looking ahead and have an energizing discussion about 2023 insights.
Jess Von Bank and I were very excited to welcome Scott Berg of Needham & Company as our special guest. Scott is a Senior Equity Research Analyst covering enterprise software.
Listen to hear his thoughts on the future of the HCM market and find out if there's still investment going on in the space. Are we in an era of consolidation? Does he see existing software vendors who are not in HR entering the HR space? Scott will also share his predictions for 2023.

With just 3 weeks left of 2023, Jason and Jess check in with the community to see how 2022 has been for them. What have they enjoyed the most about the year? What's been most challenging? What is the community looking forward to in 2023?
Have you digested 2022 and assessed your year? This Special 2022 Wrap Digital Meetup passed the mic to our #NowofWork #HRCommunity. They talk about yearly intentions, the highs and lows of 2022-both professionally and personally, and power words for 2022 and 2023...And we want to hear all about yours! Come for the fun and inspiration, stay for the community.

Cautious optimism is the name of the game when it comes to organizations preparing for 2023. As we step into the last month of the year, we're all about being realistic and proactive.
During this Digital Meetup, Jess Von Bank and I chatted with Brian Wilkerson about planning in the midst of economic uncertainty. Brian is the Corporate Vice President of hrQ and a national expert on talent strategy, workforce planning, and human capital management in times of business instability.
With an uncertain economy, challenges in the labor market, supply chain disruptions, big shifts in workforce dynamics, and continued global health issues, leaders and organizations need to stay agile and informed. Advanced workforce planning is one of the best ways to prepare organizations for all of the anticipated changes. Tune in
In less than a week, many people here in the U.S. will gather around their dinner table with food, family, and friends to celebrate Thanksgiving. The annual occasion often encourages us to think deeper about what we are grateful for. We all have something or someone that sparks a sense of thankfulness in our heart at this time of the year.
Gratitude may be easy to call to mind at home, but what about at work? What can you find gratitude for at work, within your team, or as you lead with purpose? How can we embrace recognition and celebration to bring more humanity to work? How does all of this tie into workforce experience and human fulfillment?
We couldn't wait to chat with Derek Irvine at Workhuman as we continue to recognize #NationalGratitudeMonth. As the Executive/Senior VP at Workhuman and author of Making Work Human, Derek helps teams WIN by creating amazing cultures. "Cultures that support and reinforce their strategies, cultures that ensure high performance, cultures that encourage recognition of effort, and that celebrate success."
Workhuman is known globally for integrating gratitude, workplace data, and human insights into a robust performance management platform. Their software helps global companies motivate and empower their teams to do amazing work and help explain how culture, blended with tech, can equal great team success.
Take a listen as Jess, Derek, and I tap into the topic of gratitude and how we can maximize it at work!
We don't have to go alone. When we think of change at work, Dan Riley encourages us to think of change as a team sport. "It's a long-game mindset. It takes all of us. TOGETHER." RADICL is all about inspired change. They provide employee experience advisory solutions to organizations that go beyond traditional engagement, performance management, and leadership development. Essentially, they unlock what people are thinking, feeling, and how they are connecting with an organizationâs purpose.
Jess Von Bank and I were excited to chat with Dan because here at Leapgen, we share a similar mission to motivate teams, to humanize work, and to make work better. I talked about this recently in BusinessMatters Magazine sharing that "Work has changed forever, meaning companies must adapt...The right approach is putting people first, valuing who they are, and empowering deep connections." Dan echoes this statement, saying "We know change doesn't stop. We never arrive. Work keeps changing. We keep changing. This is work. This is life. But most importantly, a shared optimism that we CAN and WILL achieve ALL of the above - if we do it together."

This week saw a Tale of Two Leaders, and the contrast could not be more stark. âWhy is small talk even legal,â Elon Musk tweeted as workers began being slashed before he said they would. Compare this to CEO Patrick Collisonâs communication to affected employees in Stripe's RIF this week. The best leadership communication we have ever seen, hands down. And the generosity shown? Unprecedented.
Jess and I chatted about both approaches as we kicked off our show. We were also joined by Serena H. Huang, Ph.D., a brilliant people analytics leader who helped pioneer people data for workforce outcomes at organizations like GE, Koch, The Kraft Heinz Company, and now PayPal. People data for business can help people thrive, not just survive at work. She also shares how we can improve employee health and well-being using data analytics, what leaders can do when they don't have data, and how to create a work environment where people not only survive but actually thrive from a psychological safety, inclusion, wellbeing, and purpose standpoint.

How do we shift from counting people to making people count? We were so thrilled to have Steve Goldberg as our featured guest on this Digital Meetup! Weâre big fans of Steve's work, both with him leading product strategy at big global companies as well as leading the implementation of HR software at some of the largest enterprises in the world.
Steve had many insights to share about how we can help people through technology. âThe employee experience is so much more than the experience of using a vendorâs technology. Employee experience is whatever your employees are thinking, feeling, doing at work,â Steve shares. We also talk about how to inject more empathy into technology, how to better humanize work, and if technology will really replace people. If so, when and where will that happen in the future of work?

The job market is undoubtedly different today than it was two years ago. But what exactly has changed? How do these vast transformations impact hiring and job trends, talent availability, matching or mismatching talent? ...And what about the elephant in the room? There's several actually. During  this Meetup, Alex Zea & Ryan Malkes have an honest chat about the recession, quiet-quitting, and the power of AI to bring about sweeping change.
As our hosts, Jason Averbook and Jess Von Bank  wrap up UNLEASH in Paris, we're excited to feature Special Guest Hosts: Alexandra Zea, and Ryan Malkes. We love HR Technology Conference & Exposition's annual Pitchfest. It's a great opportunity to give spotlight and stage to new innovation, new voices, and new approaches to solving old HR and talent problems. This year's lineup was as good as ever; a field of 33 was narrowed to 6. A winner of one of the most sought-after awards in our industry was announced. The winner was: SPOTLYFE!
We couldn't wait to chat with Team SPOTLYFE following their big win. They tell the story that won the prize, why they think they're grabbing headlines in the current talent market, and how supporting PEOPLE outcomes supports WORK outcomes. They also share their latest research on burnout and the hustle culture, two big factors affecting the quality of our everyday lives.Â

There's so much talk about building future ready organizations, but how do we know what the future looks like and build for it with intention? Understanding how we work, how work is changing, and how it can be designed is both a study in technology and in human psychology.Â
Technology enhances AND limits our imagination when it comes to imagining how organizations can enable human performance. Humans, on the other hand, are the most resilient and adaptable organizational resources you have. People can literally change faster than technology, but their core human truths aren't as trendy as you think.
The big question is: Do people NEED technology to perform, or does it get in the way? How does technology become a human performance multiplier?Â
Steve Hunt is an avid student of the history of work, the role of technology, and the interplay of human psyche. If anyone can connect the dots, he can. We waited patiently for his book launch to bring him to you, and here we are!
We welcomed Steve Hunt, PhD, Chief Expert of Technology and Work at SAP, and author of just-published Talent Tectonics to our Now of Work Community. Take a listen!Â

We had the opportunity to welcome Don Weinstein, Chief Product & Technology Officer at ADP, as a Special Guest to our Now of Work Community.
We chatted with Don about humanization and digital disruption trends in the workplace, the importance of data, and the trends that he and his team are seeing as the largest human capital vendor in the world. We also unpacked how the future of AI and Machine Learning will play a larger role in the future of HR Technology. Don had incredible insights on designing and leveraging technology to enhance the HR function!
What does the CHRO of the future look like? We all know that the pandemic has stretched us in unforeseen ways; requiring leaders to take on different tasks and develop new skills. But what role has technology, data analytics and automation played in it?
We had the opportunity to talk shop with HR Executive & Founder, Lisa Buckingham. Lisa is the global expert on jobs, work, and people!
We dove into the trends that Lisa is seeing in today's HR world, what she learned from her role as CHRO at Lincoln Financial Group, and talked to her about her HR Tech Conference keynote, titled: Meet the CHRO of the Future....a Technology Expert.

How do we humanize work in this historic labor market? We can start by rethinking how we work, where we work, and how valuable of a role talent plays in all of it.Â
We had the pleasure of chatting with Jerome Ternynck, CEO of SmartRecruiters, a company that is leading the charge on remote work, recruiting, and hiring. SmartRecruiters is one of the first companies to announce that they'd go remote firstâforever. We dug into what Jerome and his team have learned from that business decision and how it's helping them shape remote hiring best practices inside of the worldâs largest enterprises.
We also had a chance to dive into his values, entrepreneurship, today's talent market and why you need a talent strategy, along with the role of technology in achieving it.Â

Meg Bear has the same mission we embrace: change work for good. But to change it for the better in long-term and sustainable ways, we have to be willing to roll our sleeves up. Get a little dirty. Think a little bigger. And put humans at the center.
Every organization is attempting to do just that by addressing and supporting DEI, well-being, and personalized experiences for the workforce. They're attempting by creating agility and organizational resilience while they do. And they're pushing the envelope around skills and the future state of work. Where to begin?
It starts now! We Welcomed Meg Bear, President and Chief Product Officer at SAP SuccessFactors, to our #NowofWork Community for a fresh perspective on how to truly move the needle. Take a listen!Â
âEvery time I change jobs, I try to change industries so I have to change how I think.â Pat Wadors' growth mindset aligns with how successful leaders approach today's Now of Work. It may also inspire those determined to cling to processes of the past.Â
But that's not the only reason why we chatted with UKG's Chief People Officer. Pat is a trailblazer who intentionally created a cohort where people leaders can share with authenticity and transparency. She practices leading and learning openly; while encouraging others to be honest with authentic.Â
Pat believes that we should repeat and multiply what works, but donât stand in front of our peers and parrot case study after case study of 'flawless execution.' âI havenât done anything flawless in my life. Why canât we admit our mistakes to one another? How are any of us going to learn and grow?â
TAKE A LISTEN to this insightful conversation!Â
Renowned global industry analyst Josh Bersin joined us for a powerful and real conversation about the global market, the labor economy, technology investments, and why he hates talking about the FUTURE OF WORK. âThese things you are trying to accomplish donât just require new skills; they require new job models, new job titles, new job descriptions...â Every company is trying to figure out how to adapt to the Future of Work, which is the NOW OF WORK. Take a listen to hear more!
We also get an early look at Joshâs new book Irresistible, written for business leaders who want to create thriving organizations. The book lays out seven practical management principles. Plus, donât miss Josh Bersinâs opening keynote at HR Technology Conference & Exposition: "The Disruption Never Stops: Whatâs New and Whatâs Ahead in the HR Tech Market at HR Tech 2022."
You know your people WANT to stay⌠right?!Â
The Great Resignation happened because good talent is restless, and should be. They care a whole lot about a whole lot of things, as they should.Â
They want MORE, and why not? They could have been saved if they thought you were invested in their career.
Thatâs the honest truth. 94% of talent say so, according to LinkedIn research.
Tracey Parsons created WORQDRIVE because she had a hunch. People want to stay if they think they have a future. This is why most employers are investing in talent mobility solutions. Itâs your #1 retention tool, and it also creates the workforce agility you need to make smart talent and business decisions when it comes to your people.
We unpacked this topic with Tracey! Take a listen to hear us talk SOLUTIONS!
Take a listen to a lively community conversation about TECH!
We've never had better technology at our fingertips, and that includes solutions for the workforce. We're a bunch of bright, smart, innovative people with an appetite for tech - we've shown that in our consumer and personal lives. So why can't we get tech to do all it's capable of when it comes to the workplace? Why does work still feel so.....clunky? 1993? Mainframe?
Maybe we've made it too complicated. More likely, we're not taking the right approach. Does HR need to be a technologist to shape and support the digital workplace, or do they just need to be technology-aware problem solvers?
Jess and Leapgen's President and Chief Service Officer, Mike Brennan, welcomed Ray Nunn and Reid McLaughlin of Covalence Consulting to our Now of Work Community. They unpacked the differences between deployment and implementation, talked about how to get tech to produce the right outcomes and the mindset required for true transformation.
The world of events doesn't look like it did before, but what will return, what's changed, and what's BETTER? The physical event business has already bounced back, but like the workplace, it's more innovative, more digital, more hybrid, more communal and human. There are more virtual participation options, smaller meetups and watch parties surrounding bigger events, and enhanced engagement opportunities. There are pros (hybrid and digital experiences are more accessible!) and cons (making a case for physical attendance & investment is harder when virtual is an option).
But what do people really want? Zoom or hugs? Expo halls or a virtual collaboration? Big stage keynotes to inspire, or micro-content from the comfort of their kitchens?
Kathryn Frankson is a world-class digital experience creator, event marketer, and storyteller. She just executed one of the largest events of her career, and there's more up her sleeve. She offers insights on the world of digital experiences and events. Our virtual #NowofWork community is ready to host LIVE & IN-PERSON MEETUPS; no one better to help us sort it out. ;) Take a listen to learn how!Â
Leadership is never easy. It demands all of you. We talk a lot about bringing our whole selves to work, leading with empathy, the power of authenticity in creating cultures of connection. What if you're a leader who also happens to be an LGBTQ person?Â
You require safety and support, especially if you seek to create judgement-free, compassionate workplaces where people can show up as who they are. WHAT A WIN THAT WOULD BE. Fully empowered humans leading with their authentic selves, using their unique voice to lead and inspire others. That's the type of executive coaching Chris Rollins provides, he tells a powerful story, as we continue to honor and celebrate Pride Month.Â
Listen in as we talk with Chris about the power of authenticity, leading with empathy, building coaching cultures, and being an LGBTQ+ leader
75% of the workforce face some kind of caregiving responsibility. 83% of those use sick or leave time to provide care, and hereâs the real kicker: 92% report heightened stress, depression, or trouble sleeping.
Caregiving can be beautiful, an honor, and a deeply fulfilling part of our lives. But it can be a financial, social, emotional, and legal burden â and it certainly affects our productivity at work.
Lindsay Jurist-Rosner founded Wellthy to care for caregivers. From supportive health plans and services to inclusion and community, Wellthy makes it easier for caregivers to feel supported. They also suggest ways for employers to de-stigmatize caregiving in the workplace, showing them theyâre not alone and providing help and resources. Caregiving isnât a new experience. Itâs just become harder to ignore at work. In this episode, we discuss and look at the different ways we can all take better care of each other.Â
Take a listen to our very special chat with Lindsay about how to best support caregivers so that they can thrive at work and home.
Automate to humanate! We say this often at Leapgen. When we talk about automate to humanate, weâre talking about giving everyone the experience they deserve. Automate what begs to be automated so humans can do what theyâre especially equipped to do: BE HUMAN!
Why donât we provide more tools, more virtual assistants, more robotic process automation (RPA), more conversational AI? Forget what itâs called: Itâs called HELP. Humans are begging to be upskilled, supported, developed and career pathed. Technology is begging to improve experience for everyone: job seekers who need transparency and help navigating a clunky process, recruiters with overbearing req loads, hiring managers trying their best to onboard and unleash. Turn HELP WANTED into HELP IS HERE.
We talked AI with Josh Zywien, Chief Marketing Officer at Paradox, a software company fueled by the concept that AI can make recruiting more human.Â

When it comes to BEST DEPLOYING PEOPLE against WHAT THE BUSINESS NEEDS, most employers would admit theyâre behind the eight ball. We hire, develop, and attempt to retain talent from a broken supply chain; always reacting, dependent on the weather vane of the talent economy, transactional, and riddled with waste. We don't have a clear line of sight to the talent we DO have - what skills they have or want, what they can do or want to.
What if organizations could future-fit their workforce, strategically and proactively building and equipping workers with the KNOWLEDGE and SKILLS theyâll need to support the growth trajectory of the business?Â
Knowledge is power, skills are gold. Guild understands this.Â
Take a listen to this special knowledge-filled episode with Lorna Hagen of Guild Education!
Energy and innovation have been bubbling in the HR Tech space for the past few years. What's next? We were thrilled to be joined by one of the most brilliant researchers in the industry to give us the inside scoop. Stacey Harris and Sapient Insights are currently fielding their 25th Annual HR Systems Survey. Thatâs right, 25 YEARS tracking the evolution of HR systems. You remember what we were using 25 years ago, right? Weâve gone from pushing paper to publishing APIs, graduated from mainframes to the cloud.Â
Innovation is catapulting. But it hits different if youâre SMB vs. enterpriseâŚor does it? What applications and vendors are seeing the most adoption and satisfaction, and why? What are the big spending plans? Whatâs the future of HRIS and Shared Services, and how in the world is HR resourcing everything?
In this episode, Jim Holincheck, Leapgen's VP of Advisory Services, and Jason Averbook welcomed Stacey Harris to the conversation to discuss insights and trends from this year's HR Systems Survey. How can we hone the right use cases to better optimize our workforces in uncertain times?
Take a listen to learn more about this year's HR Systems Survey!Â
The conversation around the future of talent: attraction, acquisition and retention strategies, how to be more strategic and proactive around hiring, and how to build a talent pipeline that is sustainable, flexible and diverse - whether your organization is hiring like gangbusters or putting the brakes on, continues...
Molly Weaver, said it best: "My secret behind recruiting the best talent? People over paper. Fresh ideas over process for processâs sake."Â
The former head of talent at Children's Mercy Hospital of Kansas City knows what she's talking about. She was responsible for recruiting the best medical, clinical, and research talent in the world to one of the most highly rated children's research hospitals in the country. Molly has endless stories about the creativity required to bring top global talent into flyover country USA in a highly competitive healthcare industry.

"Companies that embrace remote work will replace every company that doesnât.â This is the hill Chris Herd, CEO of Firstbase will die on, and we canât find too many reasons to disagree.Â
Where does your organization stand? What are the pros, cons, and challenges to making remote work a reality?
Chris just raised his $50M Series B to help power incredible remote work experiences for everyone. TAKE A LISTEN to our conversation on the pros, cons, and challenges of making remote work a reality.Â
âThe resources in our organization are the PEOPLE, that is what our human resources are.â
The last few years of pandemic life set the stage for both talent and an organizationâs People function. The people function is more important than ever before; itâs how we BUILD UP our people. But how we have created opportunities for improvement? How we define the true meaning of HR? IT IS THE PEOPLE.
âŚAND that sparks the question, how are we taking care of our people? How are organizations shifting their HR mindset? How are we helping organizations reframe what HR really is? No organization should revert backward, pre-pandemic. You must solve for the outlier because then you have really done the work of the true people function.
This is an extremely important and powerful conversation, one that will make you think about your own people function. TAKE A LISTEN!
TW // suicide, traumaThis conversation addresses mental illness and attempted suicide. If you or someone you know is suicidal, please contact your physician, go to your local ER, or call the suicide prevention hotline in your country. For the United States, the numbers are as follows:
The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-TALK (8255) or message the Crisis Text Line at 741741. Both programs provide free, confidential support 24/7.On January 25, 2021, Natasha Bowman attempted suicide. Before this, âThe Workplace Doctorâ had written a best-selling book, performed a TED Talk, and was about to travel to Indonesia to be honored as one of the Worldâs Top 30 Management Professionals by Global Gurus. And was when that familiar record scratch happened: COVID-19.
âOther than my career, I felt like I didnât have anything else to offer this world,â Bowman told HRD. She sunk into a hole some know all too well, others have a hard time understanding.
After Natasha was hospitalized and diagnosed with bipolar disorder, she was ashamed and reclusive. A vibrant presence on LinkedIn with more than 80,000 followers, she went silent on the social media platform. Now she is silent no more. Natasha has made it her lifeâs work to use her experience and expertise to drive needed change to destigmatize mental health, create mentally healthy workplaces, empower employers and managers to have human conversations and provide accommodation, and go beyond EAP to help employers provide truly meaningful support. 1 in 5 adults suffer from mental illness; itâs time to have the conversation.
Take a listen.
There are lots of opportunities to address perceived talent shortages and close workforce gaps. One big opportunity is tightening up your talent funnel. Itâs one thing to attract and engage talent, itâs another to move them elegantly, intelligently, and respectfully through your talent funnel and - hopefully - into your business. And what about those who donât get hired? Why donât we keep talking to them about the next or another opportunity? Just ask any sales team worth its salt â a sales team doesnât reject the sales lead if they arenât ready to buy. They get nurtured. So why do we cut the relationship with the candidate when they say ânot yet'? (Nice mic drop, Adam.)
Jason Averbook and Jess Von Bank invited Adam Gordon, Co-Founder of Candidate.ID, and Susan Vitale of iCIMS, to bring fresh #talent perspective to the Now of Work community.Â
Listen to their chat about hiring trends, TA tech innovation, what people need in the changing world of work, and consumerizing the talent experience.
How do we really humanize and bring employee experience to life in the #NOWofWork?
More than ever, we need to continue to deliver a positive workforce experience. The devil is in the details: people are more digital, more remote and more distributed than ever before. There is still SO MUCH opportunity to deliver meaningful experience to people wherever they are, however theyâre working.Â
The question is: how are we delivering to a distributed workforce, and how do we plan to evolve from here?
This episode dives deep into true employee experience with the number #1 employee experience thinker worldwide, Ben Whitter, the Founder & Chief Experience Officer of HEX Organization. If youâre looking to deliver a workforce experience that is BETTER and more HUMAN than ever before, this is an episode you do not want to miss!
What do neurodiverse people need to feel welcome, be treated fairly, and celebrated at work? Often when most think about workplace diversity, race and gender are top of mind. But, please donât stop there. Between 30-40% of the population are neurodiverse. Neurodiversity, or brain diversity, describes people who think differently. This includes members of the workforce with dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADHD, and autism.
How do we define, understand, and de-stigmatize neurodiversity? JOIN US TODAY as we honor Autism Acceptance Month with a Special Edition Digital Meetup discussing neurodiversity in the workplace. AT 1P ET, Jess and I will speak with a special guest panel that includes:
-Michael Hofer, Global HR Transformation Executive at SAP and Neurodiversity Advocate
-Jose Velasco, Autism at Work Program Director at SAP
-Silvia Velasquez Casado, MBA/MPA Candidate at MIT Sloan/Harvard Kennedy School: Jobs for the College-Educated Neurodiverse
-Ed Thompson, Founder & CEO of Uptimize, focused on Talent that Thinks Differently
Thinking differently can mean having a fresh perspective, a stellar imagination, an uncanny ability to challenge norms, or habits that make you an incredible problem solver or innovator. These are a few of the assets we think about when we imagine equitable workplaces for neurodiverse talent.
Thanks for listening!
Joseph Ifiegbu comes to today's Now of Work Digital Meetup with stories to tell: how he discovered HR Analytics, his early days at the forefront of the people analytics movement inside envelope-pushing brands like Snap Inc. and WeWork, his own founderâs story as the CEO of eqtble...Joseph has built a career turning people data into people stories. The goal, after all.
Every good storyteller knows the critical elements of a story: characters, context, heroâs journey, ending. HR Analytics, or using people data for business outcomes, is often missing context, basic data collection, and interpretation. Alas, no good ending. âYou canât connect the dots if you canât collect the dots!â (Jess Von Bank's favorite thing to say)
On this Digital Meetup, Jess and Jason hear Josephâs take on collecting and interpreting data stories for workforce insights. Pretty useful stories to have in an employee-driven talent market!
The workplace is supposed to be neutral. "If you work hard you're going to rise, and that's all you need to do is put your head down and work, and all will be ok," Deepa Purushothaman shares before adding, "And I think that's wrong. That sets up a lot of people for struggle."
For many, the tone of work culture is defined on a peer to peer level and a manager to peer level, which explains why many people are leaving their roles. Oftentimes it boils down to "My manager doesn't get me, doesn't understand, is talking over me," Deepa explains to host Jess Von Bank on our Now of Work podcast. As the Co-Founder of nFormation Deepa Purushothaman is focused on providing safe, brave, and new spaces for women of color at work:
"Part of my work is talking about how the structure is differentiating and how the structure has its flaws, and it's ok to talk about that. It's important to understand that the experience is different, because if we don't understand it's different, we're not going make it better."
In this engaging chat, Jess and Deepa not only talk about work structures and systems, they talk about what many women of color are doing after they resign (hint: it's not necessarily moving on to another job), why putting WOC in leadership seats is not always the best solution, why allyship is not enough, and how HR can and should listen--in a different way. Plus, they discuss Deepa's book: The First, The Few, The Only: How Women of Color Can Redefine Power in Corporate America. LISTEN:
Tune in!
Happy Friday! How would you describe your work week? Need to refuel or get inspired? Want to share your wins or challenges? We are here! Enjoy the transformational power of our community from today's Digital Meetup.Â
Our weekly meetups are now over 1500 people strong. Every week, co-host Jess Von Bank and Jason Averbook look forward to connecting with our friends in the HR, HR Tech, and talent acquisition communities. Â
People are calling the shots, and weâre calling them differently. Work matters but for different reasons. Joy, inspiration, fulfillment, and human connection finally take a front seat. People want to be SEEN, not managed. They want to deliver VALUE, not performance. They want to be part of something SPECIAL, not a system.Â
This is why our weekly meetups are so important. It's about connecting us all; as peopleâas humans, as a community truly focused on changing work. Â
This is one of the most important Digital Meetups that we've hosted to date! Today Jess and Jason have the opportunity to speak with two incredible guests about two major causes that need immediate action and understanding.
We will start by welcoming Kateryna Kovalevska, Chair of the Ukrainian Association of HR Professionals, to our live broadcast. She has fled her country for safety, and will join us to share stories about what is currently happening in Ukraine, and how we as an HR and HR Tech community can help. âThere is no time for doubt...Ukraine needs your help now,â she told us. Here's a few ways:
Show your support for Ukraine by attending protests in your cities.
Press your governments to cancel flights to Russia, to freeze all Russian assets abroad and stop diplomatic and economic affairs.
Ask your government to deliver humanitarian aid, financial and military support to Ukraine. Silence is complicity.
Sign this petition to close airspace over Ukraine and protect them from bombing:
https://lnkd.in/gAFKiF4x
Kateryna's visit will be followed by Allison Robinson, the founder of The Mom Project, an amazing organization committed to helping women remain active in the workforce at every stage of their journey. 5.4 million women have lost jobs in the pandemic. 2 in 5 of those might never return because often work doesn't WORK for women - especially moms with added challenges and barriers.
What now? How do we get moms back into the workforce on their terms? The Mom Project is leading the pack when it comes to disrupting the modern workplace so that women don't have to choose between family and career. We'll dive into the work and vision of The Mom Project, their new research, and their RISE program. PLUS, they are hiring HR pros!
From restoring the dignity and equity of work to working moms to reaching out across the globe, we are reminded every Friday that HR includes HUMAN. Never to be missed, but especially TODAY. We hope to see you soon!
How can we restore sanity at work? Plain and simpleâditch the drama! Foster wellness and collective genius. Sounds simple, right? But can we make it happen given our current work models and business structures? Jess and Jason are excited to talk about this with Cy Wakeman on today's Digital Meetup!
Once referred to as "the secret weapon to restoring sanity in the workplace," Cy is an International Speaker on Leadership and Management, whose clients include organizations like NASA, Google, Bank of America, Cisco, Pfizer, and FedEx. Using her background as a counselor, and love of good mental processes, she also helps improve the workplace as a Drama Researcher. Yes, that's a real role, which she takes seriously and her methods deliver impactful results.
In a new #NowofWork podcast chat with Jess, Cy explains "If we had more adulting at work, we wouldn't have to be so resilient, because part of what kills our resilience is all of the drama and hassle at work."
The New York Times Best-Selling Author will share tips on restoring sanity at work AND give us a sneak peek of her NEW book, available on March 29! It's titled: Life's Messy, Live Happy: Things Don't have to be Perfect for You to Be Content. Cy shared, "I've faced divorce, homelessness, obesity, (grief)âdeaths. This is a personal book on the lessons I've learned so far that I'd like to invite people to reflect on."

Once referred to as "the secret weapon to restoring sanity in the workplace," Cy Wakeman is not your average leader. The New York Times Best-Selling Author keeps audiences on the edge of their seats as a riveting International Keynote Speaker and Thought Leader on Leadership & Management, and workplaces in check as a Drama Researcher.
What is a Drama Researcher anyways? And what's drama got to do with work? A LOT, Cy explains in a fascinating chat with our Now of Work podcast host, Jess Von Bank. "If we had more adulting at work, we wouldn't have to be so resilient, because part of what kills our resilience is all of the drama and hassle at work," Cy shares. Using her background as a counselor, and love of good mental processes Cy was once asked to get emotional waste our of the workplace, and she hasn't stopped since. Her clients include organizations like NASA, NBC Universal, Viacom, CDC, Google, Facebook, Bank of America, Cisco, Pfizer, and FedEx.
"I saw how (companies) celebrated if we saved like one minute of time in a process, and you multiply that by 100 a day; and WOW, we've got a big breakthrough...I thought if we taught people how the world works and how the mind works, and use good mental processes, we could eliminate hours of emotional waste every single day and make the work at hand more effortless."
Cy and Jess cover a good amount of ground in their chat, including topics like:
-Communication and miscommunication at work
-Employee wellness: Who should be responsible for it, the employer or employee?
-What happens when organizations meet evolved individuals?
-How organizations can be better designed to collaborate, foster collective genius, and remove hassle
LISTEN TODAY & JOIN US THIS FRIDAY as we welcome Cy Wakeman to our Digital Meetup to talk about restoring sanity in the workplace, and her NEW BOOK: Life's Messy, Live Happy: Things Don't have to be Perfect for You to Be Content.

There's a big shift in HR Tech. The solutions are no longer about HR, they are about work, life, people â how we function and thrive. HR is learning how to better leverage technology to not only manage the workforce but to deliver learning, skills, holistic wellbeing, collaboration, and leadership. In other words, HR tech is becoming LIFE tech, in the flow of work. And the investments are only getting bigger.
George LaRocque, Founder of WorkTech, joins this weekâs Digital Meetup following his HRTech Conference keynote. In a market with almost $18B in VC investment, more than 21,000 vendors, and 30 brand new unicorns, whatâs driving innovation? How do you cut through this kind of noise and build a business case for the right investment?
In Jason's Spotlight Session at HR Tech this week, he explained that solutions require prioritization, sequencing, and roadmapping. We have to connect PEOPLE to PURPOSE â or the solutions donât matter! When you think about any investment you're making...you need to ask, are you doing this with purpose? The only real reason people think that purpose is soft is because they are uncomfortable with what it might reveal.
We dig into it all on TODAY'S SPECIAL HR TECH WRAP EDITION of our Digital Meetup.

Thereâs lots to celebrate, and also a lot to hold each other accountable for in today's workforce. You may have remember seeing a lot of organizations make public pledges, commitments and investments to diversity, equity and inclusion programs in 2020. While the intention to diversify work may be good, the real question is has there been progress? Did organizations follow through on their commitment, were programs developed? Do these programs or initiatives have sticking power in an ever-evolving workforce? During today's week's Digital Meetup, we'll take a deeper look.
Today, Jess and Jason are excited to host leaders who are voices of hope, inclusion, diversity, and humanizing work to discuss DEI proof, progress and accountability. We'll unpack this important #NowofWork topic during a Special 90-minute live chat with leaders who you may have seen on past meetups, but never together in this sure to be dynamic panel setting:
-Torin Ellis, Speaker/ Founder/Advisor
-Jackye Clayton of Textio
-Shaun Peet  and Michael Metcalf Jr. of NASCAR and DECK Leadership.
Have a great listen!
Why are people leaving their jobs in droves? It's the top question asked since the start of The Great Resignation. Many answers have been given, but this one sticks. "The focus of manager has been put on the work, not on the people that create the work, who deliver the results...Everyone is just trying to manage the work, then they wonder why people are leaving?" Heather Polivka, of Awesome People Leaders, told our Jess Von Bank.
In a new #NowofWork podcast chat, the CEO shares why she believes that better trained managers hold the key to retention, the difference between being a manager and a people leader, and why great workers don't innately become great managers. Jess and Heather also talk about the importance of adjusting the traditional business mindset that people are replaceable, and how Awesome People Leaders acts as a resource for small and medium sized businesses who are struggling to make sense of the mass employee exodus.Â
If you're looking to pump up employee engagement and retention, you'll want to TUNE IN to this conversation.
Now over 16,000 people strong, TODAY our Now of Work community will celebrate something special. It's our 100th Digital Meetup!Â
Our weekly meetups started off as live Q&A chats designed to help leaders navigate work during an unprecedented time. Now, they include an ever-rotating, ever-lively lineup of HR & HR Tech industry guests, including Josh Bersin, Ben Brooks, Jackye Clayton and more.Â
For today's Special 100th Meetup, we're thrilled to welcome a dynamic guest, Marcus Buckingham! The globally renowned workplace expert and the author of two of the best-selling business books of all time, chats with Jess Von Bank and Jason Averbook. He gives us a sneak peek at his NEXT book, LOVE + WORK, coming in April. LOVE + WORK helps us discover where we are at our best â both at work and in life. His premise is based on one core belief we can get behind here at Leapgen: Love has been driven out of our workplaces, and we need to get it back in.
JOIN Marcus, Jess Von Bank, and Jason Averbook, along with a special musical guest, The Brothers Koren, who toured with Coldplay, Pink and Rod Stewart.Â
Weâre celebrating community, all of you, LOVE + WORK, and our 100th live broadcast. Thanks for listening!
We might overcomplicate a few things - like feedback. You know, how a message is received. How leadership communication is distilled and delivered. Leadership, communication, culture, and organizational behavior CAN BE complicated, and itâs only by breaking it down it becomes intentional, impact-driving, and insightful.
We break it down through signals. Signals are what makes feedback real-time, relevant, and actionable. Authentic leadership really isnât possible without truly listening to signals. But how do we signal-and-response at scale? In distributed work environments? In diverse and cross-functional teams? As a true habit?Â
Feedback loops can be powered by tech so that positive behaviors can be reinforced, dissonance addressed, and psychological safety better supported. In this episode, Jason and Jess chat with James Kelley at qChange, about cutting down the leadership lag, leveraging signals and real-time feedback through technology, and creating authentic leadership in todayâs Now of Work.
A lot of employees are leaving their roles because they don't feel seen. They don't feel like they're getting help with career development or growth, or able to harness connections.
Workhuman is on a mission to change that. As their wonderful brand name suggests, when working with clients they lean deeper into the individual experience, whether it has to do with a person's job role, or not.Â
We're so excited to share this episode as Jess Von Bank chats with Workhuman's Rosette Cataldo who lays out what a human-centered organization is all about, and how they're winning at business in the new world of work. Jess and Rosette dig into the business of gratitude and who benefits from it, what it looks like when someone brings their whole self to work, freely-without judgement, and how to cultivate a supportive work culture that recognizes the direct correlation between wellbeing, recognition, and performance.Â
"What many don't realize is that (gratitude) actually reduces stress. Lots of data shows that when you give gratitude, we call it 'Vitamin G,' you can actually reduce stress. Who doesn't want less stress?"
We couldnât help but notice an exciting launch this week. Spotlyfe, we see you! In fact, we hope this keeps trending; show us more solutions employers can offer employees right now to help in this post-pandemic work environment. Itâs about time we humanize work by truly seeing the people stepping up to do it every day.
Itâs really up to CEOs/Chief People Officers/CHROs to SAVE people or watch them GO. The Great Resignation doesnât have to impact you like it does your competition if you step up, meet people where they are, offer help, and provide basic resources to help people thrive at work and in life.
That's why weâre so excited to see our friends Josh Schwede, Scott Fowle, Tara Cooper and their team bring something fresh and innovative to market. Weâre not even calling it HR Tech; this is a way to help the people you employ WIN AT LIFE.
Our relationship to work has shifted from âwork for me or die,â to the power of a collective voice, to individual employees gaining power to meet their own needs, with managers as their co-pilots.
In this economy, fulfillment is the ultimate KPI, and building collective purpose serves to create connections between diverse populations in organizations through mutual paths forward.
In this episode, our host, Jess Von Bank, welcomes Aaron Hurst, foremost global expert on the science of purpose and fulfillment at work. In 2014, Aaron brought global awareness to the rise of historyâs fourth economic era, the Purpose Economy. At the core of it is this concept that purpose-driven work is here to stay.
TUNE IN for their fascinating conversation about the PURPOSE OF WORK

Every family caregiver you know is so over it. Juggling work, life, distance learning, Covid closures and exposures, Covid itself, their own wellbeing, running a household, staying sane. Itâs a lot! Â
Letâs not forget about informal caregivers, elder care, and all of you in a caregiving arrangement of some kind without even realizing it. Thereâs no training or preparation for caregiving. We just do it.Â
In the last two years, caregiving has become a global conversation at macro and micro levels. It affects our economy, our wellbeing, and how we live. There is so much humanity in it. People doing incredible things for those they love; more than they think they can.
Thereâs a lot we can do to help make the life of a caregiver easier, including at work. We are so happy to welcome TODAY'S special conversation with Susan Van Klink, full-time Chief Revenue and Chief Diversity Officer at Grokker, AND full-time caregiver.Â
Thanks for tuning in
Everyone is talking about the business of change and transformation. What does it take to get an organization from point A to B during these changing times? How can you turn #NowofWork challenges into solutions? Curiosity is the common denominator, or as Dr. Diane Hamilton says, "Be willing to break things." Â Â
Our Jess Von Bank had a fascinating chat with Dr. Hamilton, the CEO of Tonerra, about the role of curiosity at work, on our latest Now of Work podcast. Tonerra is a consulting firm that helps improve an organization's success by leveraging emotional intelligence, engagement, and curiosity for business success. Â Â
They explore what keeps people from being curious, why it's imperative to transformation work, how to cultivate curiosity in leaders, and why being willing to break things is one of the best approaches to take with work, right now.
The new year is here, and the urgency to transform work has never felt stronger. The Now of Work comes with new sets of rules, discoveries, and challenges. We can't wait to dive in!Â
Jess Von Bank and Jason Averbook are excited to host Leapgen's first Digital Meetup of 2022. JOIN US as we talk about the 10 Key Themes in the Now of Work. LET USÂ show you how to put people at the center of your digital transformation, technology, and change initiatives in the Now of Work.
As we step into 2022, we can't help but think about baggage that we can leave behind in 2021. What can we carry forward into the new year to fuel positive transformation, change, and innovation at work? Â Â
Jess Von Bank, our Now of Work podcast host, was thrilled to dig into this topic with Cheryl Cran. The author, keynote speaker, and founder of NextMapping, is all about helping leaders put their people first. Nextmapping is a consulting company that leverages key strategies to help people navigate the Now of Work. Â Â
As digital transformation evangelists, we LOVE their mission to: Automate the mundane, to innovate the humane. They believe that leaders and employees have more control to when it comes to being future-ready than they may know. It takes looking under the hood for patterns that will best serve us in our lives and our work. Â Â
Want to shake off the dust from 2021 and move forward with purpose in 2022? LISTEN to our first podcast of the new year to help you design a year filled with impact, on your terms.
âWeâre getting to the point where companies are getting more and more uncomfortable with all the technology available to them. Will someone build a better mousetrap that will just explode again?â We loved Larry Dunivanâs brilliant take on the NOW of Work.
The CEO of Namely, an HR, Payroll, and Benefits platform, pulls no punches during his chat with Jess Von Bank on our NOW of Work podcast. They dive into topics like: What happens next as we usher in the 4th wave of #HRTech? Whose job is people and culture and why does an HR leader own diversity? And the idea of solving HR problems that should be business problems.Â
Interesting stuff!
Employees care, and they want to work for employers who care...About the world around them, that is. Philanthropy belongs in the employee experience conversation as we continue to blur the line between work and life, and take a whole person approach to designing work around people. Â
Social giving and social impact are more important than ever as we wrap a year of lingering chaos, market turbulence, persistent change, and ETERNAL HOPE. We love that GIVING BACK is working its way into conversations around culture, employee wellbeing, employee experience, and workforce benefits. Â
In this episode we dive into this topic on our LAST Digital Meetup of 2021. Alex Zea, Leapgen Client Partner, joins Jason Averbook as co-host. We're excited to welcome One Donation to talk about EMPLOYEE GIVING. Â Â
We hope youâll join us with your most festive self as we GIVE THANKS.
When your job is to attract the worldâs best talent to spur company growth, it requires that your company become irresistible to talent, who have tons of choices in what's become the tightest global talent market weâve seen in decades.Â
Enter Andrew Saidy. He leads Global Talent Acquisition for Ubisoft, a French video game company. In our new Now of Work podcast episode, he explains what it takes to be a company that's irresistible to talent. He tells our host, Jess Von Bank, that companies must consider new ways of working, provide internal mobility options so people donât stagnate and leave, and develop or restate an Employer Value Proposition that really means something in our evolving world of work.Â
Andrew also has a thing or two to say about leading in the next era of business, and thereâs ONE BIG THING heâll carry with him into 2022. What is it?Â
Take a listen.
22 days left until we greet 2022, and we've got some BIG, BOLD questions when it comes to the world of work. They include: Will the talent crisis turn around? How will employee power continue to manifest itself? Will this be a year that a robot sits on a Board of Directors?Â
No one better to answer these questions than James McQuivey. He's built a long career deep inside Forrester Research. Heâs also the author of Digital Disruption, and his change models are being used to consider the next wave of innovation in the Future of Work. We had a fascinating chat with him on this week's Now of Work podcast, and we continue that conversation on today's digital meetup.

How do todayâs business leaders leverage HR Technology to help people work more efficiently? Stacey Harris is the Chief Research Officer and Managing Partner of Sapient Insights Group, where she oversees their industry research work including the esteemed Annual HR Systems Survey and White Paper, now in its 24th year. No one knows more about the VAST OPPORTUNITIES of technology to add value to the HR function, to business, and to PEOPLE who stand to work better. In fact, she wrote a book about it!Â
Jess Von Bank and Jason Averbook have a great chat with Stacey about the evolution of HR Technology, how HR and IT can better organize themselves around common transformation goals, and measuring impact on business.

Mo Hamzian knows the same thing an MIT professor recently declared: traditional office working is dead. The 9-6, too. In fact, stop calling work labor and learn to love what you do. Â Â
Our host, Jess Von Bank, jumped right up on her talent soapbox to challenge employers everywhere: the pandemic gave people permission to put themselves first, and the first thing they want is an employer who has their backs. Who recognize they want choice and flexibility when it comes to how, when, and where they work. Â Â
Mo designed a business that does one thing: makes PEOPLE the hero of the work story. Yes, VEL is a business model comprised of inspiring co-working facilities that sell the worldâs best coffee. Thatâs not the real product. The real product is HUMAN EXPERIENCE. Â
Which happens to be our favorite thing to talk about on the NOW of Work. Take a listen to Jess Von Bank and Mo Hamzian tell the greatest story of all time: the moment humanity won in a pandemic.
The Now of Work demands transformation, change enablement, growth mindset and innovation. How do people and business leaders get from reactive to proactive, from disaster recovery to thoughtful strategy, from mobilizing to maneuvering? Â
Best-selling author and renowned innovation expert Simone Ahuja reveals the secret to winning in a "disrupt or be disrupted" market: innovate from within. She joined Jess Von Bank in our latest episode to explore the disruption of HR, how companies can intentionally and strategically disrupt to innovate, and how creating intrapreneurs within your own organization can drive radical and healthy innovation.
If weâve learned something in the last 18 months, itâs the power of technology to connect people, not divide them. It doesnât replace human relationship, but it can help form community, create interaction, drive conversation, fuel experiences. If we do it right. We talk a whole lot about Artificial Intelligence in terms of automation, but is it playing the right role in driving connection and creating cohesive relationship? Or getting in the way?
Phenom People is phenomenal at thinking about the power of AI and technology in forging one of our most significant relationships: WORK. In fact, theyâre on a mission to hire and retain 1 BILLION PEOPLE. Can they do it? Will you be part of it?
Get ready for this pretty REAL CONVERSATION TODAY with Cliff Jurkiewicz, Phenomâs VP of Strategy -- including his big, deep, very personal WHY.
Chief Joy Officer. Have you ever heard of a better job title? Â
We donât use the word often enough when it comes to work, job satisfaction, candidate experience, and certainly not when applying for a job.
Symphony Talent's mission is to change that: to bring JOY back to the process of finding, interviewing, and applying for a job. Connecting incredible talent to inspired employers should spark JOY, too. Too often, the job of âprocessingâ candidates (what a terrible word) is taxing, mundane, and duplicative. The whole thing begs for innovation. Â
Jess Von Bank was overjoyed to have this podcast chat with Debbie Tuel! The Great Resignation means employers who do a better job finding, hiring, and nurturing available talent will have a massive leg up. In that case, JOY seems like a good goal to have. Â Â
Take a listen to Jess & Debbie on our latest NOW of Work podcast episode.
There's 50 days left in 2021! Have you taken a moment to check in with your employees? What do they think is missing within the different layers of your organization? Jason Averbook digs into this topic on today's Digital Meetup, with a special guest host.
Aubany Roybal is a Change Management expert and consultant at Koniag Government Agency. Together, Jason and Aubany unpack this timely topic and engage with our #HR #HRTech community to talk all things Now of Work. Nothing is off the table, including hiring, retention, creating a people-first culture of connection, and the biggest Drivers and Drainers at work.Â
Come with questions. Leave with strategy!
Women want a 'no-a$$holes' rule when it comes to work. Â Â
Does that surprise you? Just one finding in a massive Leapgen study of nearly 3,000 working adults in the U.S. This timely research data is RICH because we were bold enough to EXPLORE: race, gender, income level, job function, employment status, age, and the usual, of course. But also whether you manage others, how long you've been in your job, how big your company is, and whether your household has multiple streams of income.Â
The workforce is complex; people are complex; organizations need to be willing to explore those complexities if they are to deliver a meaningful, personalized, relevant and truly people-first culture. One that will keep people. Â
Jess Von Bank, Head of Marketing and Brand Strategy for Leapgen, and Kristin Penney, General Manager of Leapgen's Luminate practice and Research Director for this study, break it down and issue BIG CHALLENGES to address the BIG QUIT.Â
Know your people just like this, be prepared to act, and equip managers to better support people. TAKE A LISTEN
It's a candidate's work world and recruiters are in demand. But recruiters are also running on empty in a fragile labor market that's recovering from the pandemic, and challenged by The Great Resignation. Speed to talent is critical to business performance.Â
Recruiter.com is a light at the end of the tunnel! They're not only the world's most powerful marketing engine for recruiters, they've also built a robust AI hiring platform that is disrupting the $120B recruiting and staffing industry.Â
Listen in as Jess Von Bank and Jason discuss with Evan Sohn about how Recruiter.com's AI platform works, which technologies and innovations are creating effective talent matching and hiring, labor market trends, and if the talent shortage is real.
More great content every Tuesday and Friday, thanks for being a loyal listener.Â
Representation is a problem when it comes to work. Until we solve it, weâre shortchanging people, business, and customers. Every business - EVERY. BUSINESS. - should be intensely focused on creating environments of belonging, a thriving and humble culture, and empathy-driven leadership. All done in a way that helps people feel brave, valued, and an integral part of building impactful business. Â Â
Jess Von Bank was thrilled to talk to tech co-founder Katharine Zaleski, President of PowerToFly. They dug into why the diversity recruiting and retention platform made a strategic decision (hint: a human decision) to broaden their focus to help more than women, how they help employers tackle massive diversity recruiting goals at scale, and how her career led her from the worldâs most impressive newsrooms (Huffington Post, NowThis, The Washington Post) to creating inclusive workplaces. Â Â
POWER EPISODE ALERT. Listen up
Employers are struggling to make work matter -- matter enough to keep, inspire, engage, and attract incredible talent. That means WORK needs to feel incredible.
How do employers create incredible workplaces? Do new realities of remote, hybrid, distributed, digital work help or hurt efforts to create an inspiring, connected, even addicting workforce experience?
In this episode, Jess Von Bank and Jason Averbook dig into these pressing questions with Brandon Miller, CEO of 34 Strong, which provides human development solutions to organizations, and has built the best places to work since 2013. They not only believe that everyone deserves a great place to work, they believe that any workplace can be great!
When an organization focuses on building an employee's strengths, data shows that they become 3 times more engaged at work. Engagement is not only linked to well-being and customer satisfaction, it also strengthens retention.

Last week we talked about signals in the Now of Work. How we receive them, what they mean, how to take action. The signals keep coming FAST & FURIOUS; every organization who was squarely focused on proactively and thoughtfully improving employee experience is suddenly focused on REACTION & RESPONSE again. This time to sweeping vaccine mandates in the U.S., what it means for labor supply, and the impact onâŚ.you guessed it, EXPERIENCE.
How is HR to operate in this ongoing Experience v. Compliance tug of war? How can HR operations and service delivery support these efforts? Leapgen's own Jim Scully joins today's Digital Meetup, who is not only our Service Delivery Practice Lead, he is known as the world's preeminent expert on service delivery models for digital experience. Â
In this episode Jason is broadcasting from the rolling hills of Pennsylvania and co-host, Jess Von Bank, joins from a race course in Door County, Wisconsin. If thatâs not enough reason to join, Scully definitely clinches the deal.Â
Thanks for tuning in!
What would you be able to predict if you paid attention to signals? Probably a lot. Signals are everywhere; whether or not they mean anything relies solely on our ability to receive them, take note or make sense of them, and discern what they might mean.
We could have predicted the labor shortage, right? Or these supply chain issues? Remote work? The social justice outcry of 2020? Would you have predicted The Great Resignation based on signals weâve been seeing for months?
Forget crystal balls and predictions; on today's Digital Meetup, Jess Von Bank and Jason Averbook will talk about ACTUAL SIGNALS. Markers. Indicatorsâwhat they mean, where we see them, and what to do about them as leaders in today's world.
Thanks for tuning in.Â
Shaun Peet and Mike Metcalf believe that speed in business is the careful result of intentional culture that inspires human brilliance. The athletes, authors, and business leaders build high-performing teams on the principles of DIVERSITY, EFFICIENCY, CULTURE and KINDNESS. They're the founders of DECK Leadership and co-authors of 12 Second Culture.
They're also pit crew coaches for the most diverse pit crew in NASCAR. They assemble and train 5 HUMANS to change 4 TIRES and add 2 CANS of fuel in a race car in 12 SECONDS, so they know a thing or two about the effectiveness of speed.
It doesn't matter if you're changing tires, making widgets, delivering professional services or IT systems. You can't build the fastest, highest-performing teams on the planet without learning how to BECOME a team â and then become MORE than a team.
Ryan Malkes and Jess were thrilled to welcome Shaun and Mike as guests on today's episode.
There are still so many questions about what the future holds for the #HR #HRTech industry. Are we making necessary changes fast enough? The workforce and labor market continues to decide.Â
So what did Jason observe at this week's HR Technology Conference in Las Vegas? One thing he's likely to say: there's no simple fix, and it requires a mindset and purpose shift to come back strong. Â
All that and a special guest on today's Digital Meetup: Don MacPherson joins us to reveal the Future Leaders Academy, a program to prepare high-achieving high school and college students from economically challenged or underrepresented communities to become exceptional leaders in their homes, communities, schools and workplaces. LOVE OUR FRIDAY FEELS.
Jess Von Bank and I can't wait to be with you. Chat soon!
Big team news! Did you hear about it? This week we launched Luminate, our vendor services practice to provide strategic marketing, thought leadership, and research to digital HRTech solution providers.Â
We're excited to share more details about this team effort designed to support the transformation of the digital HR tech community on today's Digital Meetup.
Leapgen has provided marketing strategy, thought leadership and advisory services to #HRTech vendors for years, but they need MORE. Digital HR technology solutions continue to flood the market to meet the demands of the Now of Work, but they're also challenged to reimagine their solutions for the most historic labor market, HR Transformation, and business cycles weâve seen in modern times.
We are doubling down on vendor services to meet demand through Luminate, leveraging our deep bench of marketing and brand strategists, industry analysts, and domain experts to focus on thought leadership, workforce research, and content strategy. Luminate provides the deepest market insights you'll find to drive IMPACT for buyers FASTER, helping position not only solutions but the teams that bring them to market.

The Rise of the Hourly Worker is a BIG topic. Theyâre a BIG part of the labor force (82.3M hourly workers in the U.S. alone). Theyâre also in BIG demand as the economy thunders back to life.
If youâre an employer of hourly workers, your challenges are just as BIG. They often change jobs more frequently, making attracting and keeping them harder. Hourly workers make up a big part of the deskless workforce; supporting and engaging them takes imagination and creativity. Pay is a huge driver for hourly workers, but itâs not the only thing. They want flexible work options; camaraderie and culture; development and advancement; a sense of community; and a frictionless experience that makes it easy for them to contribute and belong.
Josh Secrest knows these challenges intimately. He solved for them at Abercrombie & Fitch, then at McDonaldâs, and now at Paradox. Jess Von Bank and I are excited to welcome Josh to today's Digital Meetup to talk challenges and solutions when it comes to hiring, supporting and retaining hourly workers.
"I'm losing my patience," said Jason Averbook. "I'm losing my patience with HR organizations who aren't changing." Jason and Jess Von Bank pulled zero punches in this fiery conversation. If your plan, they explain, is to bring everyone back to the office or your plan is waiting until this is all over, you're missing the greatest opportunity you'll ever have to make the biggest impact we'll ever make in the history of work.Â
This means thinking about employee experience not as a technology interface but as whole person wellbeing; it means cease & desist on archaic talent management models, and it means meeting the most basic (living wages and pay equity, fairness, safety, health = all of this is surviving) AND the most aspirational needs (culture, belonging, working for purpose, inspired leadership = all of this is thriving) of the entire person.Â
"I've lost my patience with it. How many more reports, how many more studies of mental health, how many more discussions do we have to have about HUMANS to understand our part in the role of HUMAN RESOURCES? They're not workers, they're humans, and they're struggling. HR, you have to act."
Tune in for more great content on the NOW of Work.Â
What a week! We hosted a successful webinar on Deploying HR Tech to Fuel People & Purpose. If you tuned in, thanks for the support. The time is NOW to redesign HR tech for people, not for HR, using a whole person approach and human-centered design thinking.Â
On today's Digital Meetup, Jess and Jason share key highlights from the webinar; specifically how a deployment approach fills the gap between implementation and value, between technology as a tool and as a human enabler.Â
We are redefining workforce experience as so much more than it was before, requiring a new approach to the solutions that can enable it. Speaking of workforce experience, how would you define it? We asked our team, and got a variety of interesting responses.Â
We'll dig into what workforce experience looks like today, the hierarchy of needs when it comes to it, and why we need to reorganize HR. PLUS, we'll introduce a new Management Reset Masterclass created by our friend, Jason Lauritsen. His free training series is designed to support managers who are navigating their way through all of the changes in the Now of Work.
Imagine if our obsession with happy customers started with an obsession for workforce experience? When you get employee experience right it has a ripple effect that washes over your customers. Â Â
What does it take? DESIGN, DESIGN, DESIGN! It's the key componentâthe backbone. Then comes data and a deployment mindset; not a bunch of #HRtech implementations. Â This is why Jess Von Bank and I are excited to welcome two of our most brilliant minds to today's Digital Meetup.
Leapgen designers, Emily Dahl and Ryan Malkes, will join us at 1PM ET for some straight talk. You ARE redesigning WORK, aren't you? You should be. Â

Employee development is a bright light in a competitive labor market. It not only helps with retention, developing talent can build trust, loyalty and connection to your organization's greater purpose.Â
...And just like everything in the past 18 months, it is critical for leader to rethink how to approach employee development in the #NowofWork. Does digital culture, the distributed workforce, and hybrid models of working help or hurt our efforts to focus on people, their needs, and how they can be nurtured and developed to drive value as businesses innovate and evolve?
We into this topic on today's Digital Meetup! Jess Von Bank and Jason Averbook will be joined by Ben Brooks, a Top 100 HRTech Influencer. We'll talk about the role of tech in developing people at scale, the acceleration of skills development brought on by automation, and the difference between employee coaching and traditional talent management. Ben is the CEO of PILOT, a career management technology platform that helps business leaders and employees to make work more satisfying and fulfilling.Â

TALENT WARS are fun, aren't they? They challenge us to find better, engage better, recruit better, DO BETTER. When talent is calling the shots, we up our game! We polish off our Employee Value Proposition and employer brand, turn our efforts toward inclusion and retention to keep the talent sieve from leaking out the back door. We try to rectify the Glass Door reviews that took a hit when we were looking the other way....We sharpen the weapons of a good talent war.
But how do companies reposition and bolster their employer brand to attract talent that's FRANKLY HAD ENOUGH? People want more, expect more, deserve more, and our BS detector has been sharpened through lingering pandemics. What about recruiters trying to do their jobs through it all? They're in the highest demand of all as open jobs soar and employers scramble to hire; how do they upskill themselves, make themselves marketable, or just keep up with high req loads?
We have so much to talk about with Craig Fisher ON TODAY'S DIGITAL MEETUP FRIDAY, AUGUST 6. JOIN Craig, Jess Von Bank and Jason as they dig into THE WEAPONS OF TALENT WAR.
Craig is the founder of the employer brand and recruitment tech/process strategy firm, TalentNet Media. He has led Global Marketing, Employer Brand, and Recruiting Innovation at Allegis Global Solutions and talent acquisition teams at the Fortune 500 level.
THEN: She became Miss North Dakota for a big reason: to use her voice as a young Black woman on a platform with influence and reach in a place not expecting to see someone like her. Rosie Nestingen tells Jess Von Bank, our Head of Marketing and Now of Work community host, about the day she arrived at a school assembly to share her inspirational youth message with grade school kids. The principal greeted her: "I love your message, I love your story, but you should know your audience. There is ONE diverse person in our community. The only family who isn't German is Norwegian."
NOW: What it must feel like doing diversity recruitment. You can't hire your way into workplace diversity. (Repeat that 100 times.) You CAN welcome marginalized employees by addressing belonging, inclusion, and retention. That's the real work, the harder work, and it also requires knowing your audience. "Where are we really at, if we're being honest?" You don't create workplace diversity in a Big Bang; you do it in repeatable, measurable, incremental ways that show PROOF of the PROMISES you make."
This is Rosie's approach in her mission to attract and retain more diverse technology talent within Best Buy. She's not on the DEI team, she's on the technology team. DEI isn't a TEAM, it's a WAY OF BEING. Important #NowofWork podcast conversation; listen up!

It's OFFICIALLY the 2nd half of 2021. Does your company still operate like it's 2019? A pandemic, unique labor market, and sweeping social movements all have the power to permanently alter human psyche. They can impact and forever change how we see people and work.
Plain and simple, your organization shouldn't look the same as it did a year ago. How do you take steps to change things for GOOD?
Tune in to this great episode where our Jess Von Bank welcomes Jason Seiden of BRNDSTRM to talk brand marketing, employee storytelling and tech adoption in the NowofWork.Â
You don't want to miss this!
What keeps every HR & People leader up at night should come as no surprise. Every organization continues to plot and prioritize post-pandemic pivots around DEI; the mental wellbeing of the workforce; optimizing tech and streamlining workflows for the digital and hybrid workplace; and leading people with more transparency, more empathy, and increased personalization and flexibility. We have leadership gaps, too -- most organizations don't have enough or effective enough people leaders to drive the workforce through historic change and transformation.
All of this is Workforce Experience. Technology is KEY to delivering and measuring experience at scale. Yvette Cameron and Cara Capretta join Jess Von Bank and I for this weekâs Digital Meetup to share how organizations can bring mission-critical priorities to life for better employee experiences and business outcomes that matter.
JOIN us for good conversation, strategies and solutions.
This is the most exciting time to be in this industry. Does that mean we're in peace time? No, we are in flipping war time! Last year we faced a RESET. Now, more than halfway into 2021, we are confronting the Great Recovery, which is competing against the Great Resignation. People want more and expect better. They also need to reestablish trust and connection in the #NowofWork. Employee Experience and humanizing work has never been more important.
1 MILLION PEOPLE LEFT THEIR JOBS VOLUNTARILY IN JUNE. Where does this leave recruitersâwho are burned out themselves? They donât know how to recruit in a defiant labor market, the old employee value proposition isnât cutting it any more, and we canât keep telling the same old story when jobs, business, and people have changed forever. The talent tables have turned. Itâs a new era of employment relationship, a humanization of work movement that demands we put people first.
This is why Jess Von Bank and I CAN'T WAIT to talk to Debbie Tuel, Chief Joy Officer at Symphony Talent. Sheâs leading The Joy Pipeline, a global journey to help talent acquisition leaders and recruiters get people back to work faster and with a more dignified experience.
TUNE INTO OUR CONVERSATION.
Join Steve Boese, HR Technology Conference Chair, and Jason Averbook, CEO & Founder of Leapgen, as they discuss ways HR can utilize technology to help employees achieve their goals, improve their skills, and enhance their career development.Â
Thanks for joining the conversation!

Today's Digital Meetup is pretty inspiring. Jess and I are thrilled to welcome Lindsay Wrege to our broadcast. You may remember Lindsay from our #NowofWork podcast. In fact, her interview holds the top spot for our most listened to episode to-date.
Lindsay's best friends in grade school were disabled. She grew up in their world with adaptive activities and inclusive classrooms. After high school graduation Lindsay looked forward to college, internships, and studying abroad. âBut for them, it was a stopping point," she said, "...80% of people with disabilities are unemployed, and thatâs just not OK."
Instead of simply moving along, Lindsay decided to do something about it. As a college freshman, she created 321 Coffee. 100% of her coffee shop employees are disabled. Her successful business model is not just a rally cry for erasing the stigma around hiring disabled people, it's also a testament to change. It shows what embracing a diverse workplace can truly look like when put into daily practice.
In this episode we see where Lindsay is now that she's a new college graduate, talk about inclusive workplaces, and how we all can take steps to create a working world of change.

We are excited about today's Digital Meetup, and we have two stellar guests on deck!
How we tell the story of work changed completely when work changed completely.
Jess and Jason are joined by Katrina Kibben, CEO of Three Ears Media. Katrina is a professional work storyteller with special expertise in writing job descriptions FOR the candidate, not ABOUT the employer. We talk about using inclusive language at work, the use of pronouns, and writing job advertisements that don't stink.
We also focus on the power of storytelling for work during our chat with Elena Valentine, CEO of Skill Scout. We will unpack the art of visualizing and illustrating opportunity when it comes to talent, the work they do, where, and how they do it!

"We didn't start off to create a business called Experience Happiness...We started it to save our lives," Nancy O'Brien shares with Jess Von Bank on our #NowofWork #podcast.Â
Happiness may be a simple topic, but it's not simplistic, especially when it comes to work. On this new episode Jess chats with Nancy and Rachelle Anderson, the founders of Experience Happiness and creators of The Happiness Practiceâ˘â an innovative, sustainable, and scalable solution that helps people and organizations increase happiness, engagement and reduce burnout.Â
During the chat they unpack what makes us happy at work, how to get there, and why we all deserve it. Jess adds, "We throw a lot of buzz words around, especially when it comes to work. In a workplace setting we talk about how people perform and we measure performance and talk about engagement...use a lot of words to measure human beings at work, but I think that we're missing one really important and that is are people happy?" As the notion of "returning to work" becomes a more popular term, it's important to keep the Now of Work in focus. We need to rethink work based on what works TODAY. Prioritizing people and employee experience matters more than ever.

Thomas Otter joined Leapgenâs Digital Meetup last week, and an hour just wasnât enough.Â
Thomas uses a brilliant analogy for the IT strategy of any organization (are you a sunflower, daisy, cactus, or dandelion?) and explains who the power couples should be when C-level executives collaborate to modernize their function and the business overall.Â
Sure, weâd love see to see HR and IT partner more often and more successfully, but Thomas thinks you should probably check in with Marketing if you want to take notes from a function who has successfully aligned delivery and technology to innovate the way they deliver value to the business.Â

How do you define self-care? More importantly, how do you approach and prioritize self-care alongside demands on time, physical space, schedule, health, and work?Â
Covid-19 has been especially harmful for working mothers, who were already carrying a disproportionate burden of teacher, housekeeper, babysitter, therapist, and all kinds of second shift duties. Working moms are dropping out of the workforce at an alarming rate because THIS. JUST. ISN'T. WORKING. So how can we find balance? If working moms don't save themselves, it's unlikely anyone else will.
Jess Von Bank was proud to host Leapgen's own social media content producer, Chie Davis, to learn about Mommafied. When Chie isn't storytelling Leapgen's brand and services across social media, she's providing health, wellness and self-care tips for busy moms who want to lead more whole lives. How would you rate your Workforce Experience on a scale of one to 10? Would you give it a 10? Would you say, without hesitation, that it is REMARKABLE? That's the goal; an experience where both PEOPLE THRIVE and business moves forward.
On today's Digital Meetup, we're excited to dig into the topic of DESIGNING A REMARKABLE WORKFORCE EXPERIENCE TO FUEL PEOPLE AND BUSINESS. JOIN Jess and I TODAY AT 1PM ET, as we welcome Special Guest: Greg Pryor, Senior VP, People & Performance Evangelist at Workday.
Our chat is a warm-up to next Tuesday's Workday Navigator Series event, focused on delivering a meaningful and frictionless employee experience.
This week Oracle announced that they want IN to the employee journeys space, and they're not alone. There's never been more activity in the HR Technology spaceâ more urgency, funding and the intention to FOCUS ON PEOPLE; their SKILLS, EXPERIENCE, MOBILITY, DEVELOPMENT AND HAPPINESS!
It's no longer just about tech. Honestly, it never was. It's about designing employee journeys using data. It's about re-engineering solutions to produce better business outcomes. AND today, we'll help you sort things out, with a SPECIAL GUEST.
We're excited to welcome Yvette Cameron to our FRIDAY Digital Meetup! Our Jason Averbook, JESS VON BANK, and James Holincheck are pumped to talk shop with the Senior VP of Global HCM Product Strategy at Oracle. The idiom of 'canaries in the coal mine' refers to coal miners who carried caged canaries into the mines to detect carbon monoxide and other toxic gases before they could hurt humans. Kanarys (pronounced the same way) was established with the same mission: to detect toxic factors that might prevent a company from achieving a truly inclusive work culture where everyone belongs. Where humans can thrive.
Jess Von Bank was thrilled to welcome Mandy Price, CEO and Co-Founder of Kanarys, to the Now of Work. They got nitty gritty about the anonymous, bottom-up feedback loop that is absolutely essential to TRULY HEARING what PEOPLE ARE FEELING. Take a listen to an inspiring conversation about making your voice heard. Change at work starts here, in this conversation between Mandy and Jess â and with each conversation we have to make work more inclusive.

NOW LIVE: SmartRecruiters is on a mission to change how people and organizations think about hiring, diversity, and recruiting. With Rocki Howard at the helm, theyâre poised to make a significant impact. Weâre excited to welcome Rocki, their Chief Diversity Officer, to our #NowofWork Digital Meetup. âWe believe that when you change the lives of people who are underrepresented, you change the world,â she says.
JOIN US as we talk: HUMANIZING DIVERSITY.
It's a big honor for our CEO, Jason Averbook, to welcome Global Industry Analyst, Josh Bersin, to our Now of Work Digital Meetup. In this episode they preview Josh's Spring #HRTechConf keynote "#HRTechnologyy 2021: Facilitating Big Changes in Work." Jason will also tease his talk.
EACH VOICE OFFERS INCREDIBLE GUIDANCE for driving change, leading #digitaltransformation, making work better for people, and elevating experience. Technology has a supporting role to play, but it's not the featured actor.
The featured actor is YOU. Maybe this moment in history was meant for change, and you were meant to do this #HR work. We've built an online community over 2,000 strong. Nearly 800 weekly audience members join us on Fridays on Crowdcast. It's the highlight of our collective weeks! We learn, inspire, and reshape ourselves as an industry.

Rocki Howard is doing some of the most important work that needs to be done right now, but wishes that her job didn't exist. "I would love to live in a world where I don't have a job," she tells our Jess Von Bank in this Now of Work podcast episode.
Rocki is the Chief Diversity Officer of SmartRecruiters, and explains that she's on a mission to "disrupt the intersection of diversity and recruitment and create systems that lead to simple, substantive, sincere and sustainable diversity solutions." And although Rocki would love to live in a world where ALL recruiting includes diversity recruiting, she knows that the industry is not there yet.
To chip away at this dilemma, Rocki spearheaded a Diversity Hiring Toolkit with SmartRecruiters, that's changing the way people and orgs think about hiring, diversity, and retaining talent. She digs deeper during her engaging chat with Jess, as they unpack about everything from unconscious bias to tech and budget barriers. "We don't want price to be a barrier. We want people to have diversity hiring success. We believe that when you change the lives of people who are underrepresented, you change the world."
Before joining SmartRecruiters, Rocki spent over 20 plus years in the recruitment industry. She's held leadership roles that include the US Operations Director at Resource Solutions, a Principal at Pipeline HC, and VP of Colleague Experience at Adecco. If you think Rocki and Jess's convo is smooth, it's because Rocki also has a podcasting background. She brings her wealth of experience and insights to her role as Host of the Voices of Diversity podcast, which seeks to amplify and humanize underrepresented voices and diversity efforts.
Hear more from Rocki about changing the way we do diversity recruiting and hiring on Friday. She'll be a guest on our 2/26 Meetup Series.

In this episode, our hosts Jason Averbook & JESS VON BANK have the pleasure of welcoming Author, Tenured Practitioner & #Diversity Strategist Torin Ellis back to our meetup! If you joined our first chat with him last summer, he gave insightful, no-BS strategies for encouraging safe, supportive, and inclusive workplaces at the height of the George Floyd social movement.
Torin previewed his HR Technology Conference & Exposition keynote, focused on helping organizations reframe their commitment to #inclusion and #belonging, go from fatigue to focus, and attract and retain diverse talent.
We're thrilled to have recently previewed #HRTechConf keynote speakers, like Global Industry Analyst Josh Bersin and DEI Recruiting Expert Jackye Clayton â. We're excited for Torin to weigh in! DON'T MISS THIS!
Mita Mallick is the head of inclusion, equity and impact at Carta. She's a columnist for SWAAY and has been published in Harvard Business Review, The New York Post, and Business Insider. In this powerful conversation with Jess Von Bank, Mita tackles head on the mass exodus of women from the U.S. workforce - 2.2 million of them since the beginning of the pandemic, to be precise. In her latest HBR piece, she moves beyond the statistics and suggests 5 ways to bring women back into the post-pandemic workforce.Â
Perhaps these changes were needed ALL ALONG to bring more fairness, equal opportunity, and parity to working women, and perhaps some of these changes should be legislated. But business leaders don't have to wait; companies can and must step in to bring women back into their organizations. Jess and Mita agree: we cannot see full economic recovery without women, and it's up to individual organizations to show radical leadership and take charge.Â
The Now of Work is about all of the ways work has changed forever. Mita and Jess explain 5 simple ways work can change for good.

Shereen Daniels chose HR as her profession; she did not choose anti-racism as a platform. That is, until she broke her silence. Now she knows freedom like never before, and she actively works to deconstruct racism in leadership teams, in organizational constructs, and in everyday conversation. "I wish we stepped into our power more," she told our host Jess Von Bank on the Now of Work. "It's not about asking yourself why culture or society or the system doesn't work for Black people; ask yourself why it works so well for White people."
Shereen lays it all bare with Jess on this raw, real, action-inspiring, change-fueling conversation. She'll tell you the words you need to say without flinching before we see real change, and together they challenge HOW we can focus on DEI for as long as we have and STILL be in the situation we're in. Change is possible, as Jess illustrates when she recalls visiting the George Floyd memorial in her native city of Minneapolis. "It occured to me," says Jess, "this this was a moment of both horror and hope. A moment of crisis so great it will inspire the biggest movement of change in the world."
LISTEN if you want to see the needle move in our lifetime. LISTEN if you want to dignify work by dignifying people. Just listen. Welcome Shereen Daniels, LinkedIn Top Voice of 2020, to the Now of Work.

Weâve got an all-star cast joining us on the show today, Ryan Malkes, Emily Dahl, and Mackenzie Rohn are here in the virtual studio to discuss their upcoming presentation âDesign Thinking for Digital Workforce Experienceâ at the Fuel 2021 kickoff event produced by Leapgen.
I was amazed at the energy and passion that they brought to our listeners, and at 8:30am in the morning. They shared a powerful message about driving empathetic action in the workplace. Not everyone has adapted to change in the same way and organizations need to implement a continuous listening strategy to best gauge how to help their employees. Empathy is a foundational element in Leapgenâs work to design a human-centric experience through design thinking. They reminded us that it is not about thinking so much as it is about design doing.
While âplanes are groundedâ right now, we can take this opportunity to act and change. Join their session this Wednesday, January 13th, to gain actionable insights and practical next steps to design a better digital workforce experience.

Marc Moschetto grew up in the shadow of Apollo, a nerd to the nth degree for science and space travel. A kick motor is an engine on a spacecraft used to fire a higher level of orbit. Since weâre talking to one of the best storytellers we know, Jason Averbook wants to know how organizations can parlay best practices from marketing to serve and support the new distributed workforce. How do we leverage things weâve learned in digital marketing and engagement, like knowing whether your message is resonating even when you canât sit around the table with your audience (workforce)? Talent development is nuanced, with career âengagers,â motivators, individual values, and skill gaps of each employee determining potential career opportunities. So how can it be scaled for an entire workforce? You democratize it, says Anne Fulton, CEO and Co-founder of Fuel50. âWe love what our science brings to the business,â putting information about potential fit for a particular job in the hands of employees, the very people who should own their own future. Take a listen as Jason Averbook and Jess Von Bank continue their conversation with Trish McFarlane and Steve Boese of H3 HR and the HR Happy Hour. The conversation continues with personalization and prioritization when it comes to how, when and where we work. Thatâs just one long-awaited and surprise benefit of the pandemic driving everyone out of traditionally defined and structured workplaces and known, well-worn norms. But wait: just because we âwent digitalâ during Covid, does that mean we just push things remote and online and say weâre digital now? NOPE. Remote doesnât mean digital, tech doesnât equal digital, online doesnât imply digital. Digital requires a new EXPERIENCE, and that requires intentional design, a unique approach, and an elevated experience.
And donât miss RANT #2 in Episode 2 of 2 with Steve and Trish: We need to break education and learning if weâre going to truly transform work. Yes, weâre talking about K-12 and post-secondary education. Start teaching learners how to learn and skill themselves BEFORE they get to the workforce; form the right habits early in our learning lifecycle rather than waiting to break or form new habits once workers enter adulthood and the workforce. Itâs Jasonâs rant about poking the balloon to better prepare young people for work. Listen up!

Trish McFarlane and Steve Boese do incredible work to support HR and the HR Technology space. Thatâs why Jason Averbook and Jess Von Bank hosted them on the Now of Work, and why they had a billion questions. âWhen do we get to stop talking about Covid?â âWhat do the unemployment claims, jobs reports, and reported dismissals need to show us before we can claim economic recovery?â âHow does the talent pot get re-sorted and re-mixed when HALF of American small businesses wonât survive Covid and when entire industries and verticals are being shattered?â âHow did the pandemic act like a GREAT CLEARING when it came to workplace redundancies?â
Those were just a few questions bantered about, and then came RANT #1 in EPISODE 1 of 2 in this conversation with Steve and Trish. Concerns for employee health - not just physical but MENTAL health - became very real and highly exacerbated during the pandemic. These are not new problems; now theyâre newly acknowledged. Itâs time for employers to do more to support the whole person, and work tech plays an important role.

Work has changed forever, and it's ABOUT TIME. We were 10 years behind when it came to matching our experience of work to our experience of the WORLD. Just one way work has changed is how we think of it, how we structure and compensate work, who performs it and the employment relationship people desire, and how we think about âemployees" versus "talent opportunities." We want flexibility, customization, and personalization to Work Your Way. Weâve called it the gig economy, the contingent workforce, and other things, but letâs stop separating it from our holistic view of WORK. There are a lot of different actors in the complicated landscape of the extended workforce; a holistic model and manageable experience should be the goal. Dan Beck & Annrai OâToole join Jason Averbook on the Now of Work to talk about Utmost and their important exploration of the extended workforce.
