Happy Father's Day! How cool that God our Father in Heaven let's us use His identity and relationship to showcase His goodness! God is so good!
Also, thank you so much for all who made the Mass in which Bishop consecrated our altar happen and the reception for Fr. Sylvester and I following. It truly meant a lot for us to be to celebrate with you.

How good God is! We have a lot to be thankful for and celebrate as a community this week. Starting Saturday June 7th we have the ordination of one of our young men, Dcn. Jacob Chavez to the priesthood! After his ordination he'll be offering a Mass of Thanksgiving here on June 8th at our 4:30pm Mass with a reception to follow.
Then, Tuesday June 10th at 6pm we have Mass with Bishop Dolan who'll be coming to bless our altar and we'll install our relic, a relic form the heart of Pope St. Sylvester (d. 335). After this Mass we'll have a farewell reception for Fr. Sylvester and myself. We'd love to see you there!

Hello St. Mary Magdalene,
Blessed Good Friday and Happy Easter! How good God is! He allows His heart to be pierced today and the font of grace and mercy flow forth. But this also means that there's room in His pierced heart for each of us! I can't help but think about this during these most sacred days. Christ chooses each of us, Christ chooses you and He makes room for us in His heart so that we might dwell with Him forever. For this we can always give thanks and look to any crucifix with love, gratitude, and hope in the debt that He paid for our salvation. We adore you O Christ, and we praise you! Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

This week we had two amazing saints that remind us of the value of sacrifices and penances having value and doing incredible things when offered to the Lord. Abraham and the stars in the sky!
Hello St. Mary Magdalene,
This week we have a powerful reading from Genesis 15 as our 1st reading for Mass. In this reading we see Abraham invited to gaze up into the sky and count the stars in the middle of the afternoon! He can't see the stars, and similarly, sometimes we can't always see God or His plan for us, but we know they are there. What a great reminder for us of trust in the Lord and that just because we don't see it, doesn't mean that He isn't leading us! May this Lenten journey help to further cultivate our faith that we may model a faith like that of Abraham and follow the Lord in all things.

Our Lady of Lourdes
Hello St. Mary Magdalene,
First, I want to share with you all a wonderful opportunity to engage in fellowship. On Sunday February 23rd from 1-3:30 pm our Family Faith Formation staff and volunteers are hosting a "Children's Outdoor Fun Day." We'll have food trucks, drink carts, face painting and many other activities for everyone! See you there.
Second, our annual Charity and Development Appeal (CDA) has begun. This is our diocese's annual appeal to support charitable works throughout our diocese including (but not limited to) supporting the education and formation of our seminarians, future priests for the Diocese of Phoenix. Lastly, we celebrated earlier in February two pretty cool saint days, at least for me, Our Lady of Lourdes and St. Bernadette Soubirous- the visionary of Lourdes. This was the Marian apparition that sparked in me a deeper desire and love of Mary and Marian devotions. I share more about it in the video, no spoilers here!

Called and Gifted coming to St. Mary Magdalene!
Hello St. Mary Magdalene,
It is with great joy that I invite you to take part in the Called and Gifted program and its unique discernment of spirits, a means by which we concretely discover how the Holy Spirit works in our life and enables us to share the Good News of Jesus Christ with others. Additional information below:
Discerning charisms communally enables a parish to thrive on the gifts of its people. Far from being "just another program," this is a whole new way to look at our parishes. Our communities are filled with organizational and pastoral needs that are usually met by recruiting anyone who shows any interest or who, perhaps, is just unable to say "no." Because we seldom look first at the gifts and call of individuals, our communities too often contain generous and energetic people who have been burned-out or even traumatized trying to fill "vacuums" for which they were ill-equipped. But if we look first at our gifts, our communities will come to be shaped by our loves, because God calls each of us to (and gifts us for) the work that we most love.
The discernment process ensures that individuals cease to be anonymous to the leadership of the community and to each other. In our large Catholic parishes and institutions, it's easy for individuals to come and go without being noticed and to believe that they have nothing to contribute. When people start to discern their gifts, they also start to talk to each other about their gifts. New relationships begin to form among parishioners, and parish leaders often find that new priorities for the parish begin to emerge.
The discernment of their gifts draws people from the periphery of the community to the center. Some of our most gifted people are sitting, unrecognized, in the back of the church. Many lay Catholics emerge from the gifts discernment process with a much stronger sense that they have something important to give to the larger Christian community and to the world. Catholics who used to sit quietly on the sidelines take new risks, and others emerge as leaders of new initiatives.
Recognizing the charisms of all helps the Church answer the call of the Holy Spirit. Pope John Paul II has called the Church to a new evangelization and heralded a "great springtime" for Christianity. Lay Catholics, in particular, are called to be the Church's "front line," the people in whom the majority of our contemporaries meet the risen Christ. They need to discern their charisms in order to meet this call, and the parish is the most accessible setting for discernment. As partners in the mission of Christ, everyone has been "called and gifted" for the sake of the world!

The Assumption of Our Lady Into Heaven
Hello St. Mary Magdalene,
Thursday August 15th is the solemnity and holy day of obligation where we celebrate the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven. This feast is a reminder for us of our final hope, to be united body and soul into Heaven with Jesus.
Also, our new mosaics are in! They are a phoenix and a pelican. The phoenix is situated over the ambo due to its connection with resurrection. St. Paul speaks in 1 Thessalonians 4:17 about how we will, at a word of command from Christ rise to meet Him when He comes again at the end of days. The pelican, situated over the presider's chair is an image of the Eucharist. Depicted on the mosaic is a mother pelican plucking the meat from her own chest in order to feed her young, giving her life to save theirs. This is exactly what Christ does for us in the Eucharist, giving us His Body and Blood so that we might have life! The meaning for both the phoenix and the pelican are actually handed down to us from the earliest Christians who saw in these animals an allegory for how God is at work in our lives.

Hello St. Mary Magdalene,
Thanks for tuning into this week’s video with me, Fr. Chris. There’s a lot going on this weekend as we are celebrating our patronal feast day this weekend so you’ll hear some beautiful prayers during the Mass centering on Mary Magdalene and her role as the “Apostle to the Apostles” as the Church refers to her. She is given this title because, as the first person to see Christ Resurrected from the dead, she is sent to the Apostles to proclaim the Good News. In Greek, the language in which the New Testament was written, Apostle comes from “Apostelos” which means “to be sent” so, she, as the “Apostle to the Apostles” can literally mean “the one sent to the ones who are sent.” This same Greek root is the origin of the term “apostolate” meaning the area in which we’re sent to bring the Gospel. How blessed then, that we, spiritual sons and daughters of St. Mary Magdalene rejoice in her being the first person to see the Risen Lord. This patronage too is commemorated in our sanctuary artwork with the Latin phrase “Vidi Dominum” which means “I have seen the Lord” the same message she gave to the Apostles 2,000 years ago. We have the great joy then in sharing this vision of the Risen Lord especially in the Eucharist, the source and summit of our faith. How providential then that the national Eucharistic Convention is currently underway in Indianapolis on this same weekend. Indeed, the Eucharist is the venue through which we too can see the Risen Lord just as Mary Magdalene did. In honor of this, I want to share with you several resources that I have read and recommend in order to foster a deeper love of Christ present in the Eucharist. First, is this wonderful book “St. Mary Magdalene: Prophetess of Eucharistic Love” by Fr. Sean Davidson. In 200 pages this book offers scriptural, historical, and theological perspectives on Mary Magdalene and the radical way in which her encounter with Christ inspired her to change her life and how we, modeling her repentance, can allow Christ to change our life as well. I have about 20 copies of this book which I am happy to give away, if you would like one please email me and I will be happy to leave you a copy. Second, I would like to recommend Pope St. John Paul II’s 2003 encyclical “Ecclesia de Eucharistia” (Church of the Eucharist) where the late holy father inspirationally writes on the Eucharist and its centrality in the life and mission of the Church and of every Catholic. It’s about 20 pages so it can easily be read during prayer times in the adoration chapel. Third, is Pope Benedict XVI’s 2007 Sacramentum Caritatis. This 40 page post-synodal exhortation offers spiritual and practical insights on the Eucharist and how we can prepare our souls spiritually to receive Christ. It can be technical and/or practical at times since it’s also addressing questions on topics like proper reception of Holy Communion, and active participation in the liturgy. Fourth, and lastly, is the USCCB’s 2021 document “The Mystery of the Eucharist in the Life of the Church.” This 30 page document offers practical and spiritual insights oriented towards a deeper appreciation and entry into the great gift of the Eucharist. There are some phenomenal quotes from saints in here that afford many opportunities for prayerful contemplation of Christ present in the Eucharist. These writings from the USCCB, Benedict XVI, and JPII are all available online and are linked in the description of this video! In conclusion, I also want to say thank you to everyone who stepped up at my recent adoration appeal. We went from over 40 hours with no adorer down to less than 10! That is awesome and it means that perpetual adoration can continue. Now, it is incumbent upon all of us, however, to maintain our commitments in order to ensure a prayerful space to encounter Christ while simultaneously ensuring safety for all adorers and the Blessed Sacrament! Have a wonderful feast day weekend and may our Eucharistic Lord draw you ever more deeply into His infinite, eternal love!

Visitation of Mary!
Hello St. Mary Magdalene,
There a few highlights and special things shared in this video including the recent ordination of a young man from our parish to the diaconate on May 26,2024. He has one more year left of seminary formation until his is ordained a priest. He's the third priestly vocation from St. Mary Magdalene and there are several other young men from our parish discerning a vocation so please keep them and of our deacons, seminarians, and priests in your prayers!
Also, on the 31st of May we celebrate the feast of the visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary to her cousin Elizabeth. What a beautiful story to sit with and pray over as we see Mary as the first evangelist! She's the first person to share the Good News of Christ's Incarnation and is therefore a guide for our missionary efforts! To that end, as we conclude this month of May, how can we be more Marian? Meaning, how can I bring Christ into my or someone else's life? Mary went out filled with joy and shared it with Elizabeth bringing her and the unborn infant John the Baptist into the joy of the Lord's presence. In other words, Mary always points and leads us towards Christ, how can I do this in my own way, large or small?

Pentecost and the power of the Holy Spirit
Hello St. Mary Magdalene,
Did you know that Pentecost reverses what happened in Genesis with the tower of Babel? In that story, mankind tried to ascend on their own and claim what belongs to God alone and, as a result ended disastrously as our languages were now separated and we were unable to understand one another. This weekend we hear how the Holy Spirit now descends upon us and draws us all together through the diversity of languages in one common mission: to proclaim the Gospel, the Good News of Christ! Also, experientially for us too, we have the Latin language to unite us in our prayer and worship so that, despite linguistic and culture diversity, we can pray together!
So, ask the Lord to abundantly renew His outpouring of the Holy Spirit in your life so that the power of the Holy Spirit will lead you deeper into God's Love!

This week at Mass we'll hear the Gospel of the Good Shepherd and what a beautiful thought that Christ is the Good Shepherd who both fights for us and seeks us out in all circumstances! How good God's Love for us truly is. I encourage you to spend some time in prayer with this Gospel this week and reflect on Christ and His promise to defend us and to seek us out.

Alleluia! Christ has risen from the dead in glory! Did you know Easter continues for another 5 weeks! That's right, for 8 weeks total we celebrate the gift of God's victory over sin and death. That also means that Easter is a season, and it's a season that's longer than lent. Lent is 7 weeks, Easter is 8 because God's victory is greater than our sinfulness!
May the joy of the Risen Lord continue to fill your heart!

Divine Mercy Sunday

Happy celebration of Divine Mercy Sunday. What a wonderful feast for us to celebrate, pray, and contemplate the infinite love and mercy of Jesus Christ poured out for us on Calvary. Sunday is also the conclusion of the Octave of Easter where we stop time for 8 days to celebrate the Resurrection and the victory of Christ over sin and death. What a glorious day, truly the day the Lord has made so let us rejoice and be glad!

Conversion of St Paul
Hello St. Mary Magdalene,
January 25th was the conversion of St. Paul, arguably one of the greatest missionaries in Christian history! He endured much to proclaim the Gospel to so many and continues to inspire generations of Christians even to this day through his extant writings and witness. It's also an invitation for us to reflect on who's been a St. Paul in our own lives, someone who's proclaimed the Good News to us? How too can we be like St. Paul to someone else? Is there someone we can help come to know the Love and Mercy of Jesus Christ?

Wow is there a lot to be grateful for! The weather is finally cooling down and the DBacks are in the World Series! Let's Go DBacks!!!!
But for us, it's also coming up on All Saints and All Souls Day: two days where we remember our own call to holiness. How awesome too that we can draw inspiration from the saints that have gone before us that we can study their lives in order to adapt their lessons in to our own so that we can be the saints for the next generation of the Church! The Saints show us how to make specific choices for Christ each day and so, in honor of our own call to holiness and our desire to be a saint, make a choice for Christ today and every day!

November 1st: All Saints day! Mass times are 7pm on 10/31 and 6:30am, 8am, and 6pm on November 1st.
November 2nd: All Souls Day: Mass times at 8am and 6pm
November 5th: Our parish Novemberfest from 1-4pm. Come celebrate with food, fun, and games!

Did you know that in the year 64 AD the emperor Nero set fire to the city of Rome and then blamed it on the Christians? His actions resulted in a horrible persecution in the city of Rome that killed thousands of Christians including St. Peter! Today the Church remembers these brave men and women who gave their lives in witness to Christ! Inspired by the example of these men and women, how can we make today, and the rest of our life, an offering to Jesus Christ?

Hello St. Mary Magdalene,
Thank you for tuning in to this week's video. First, a big shoutout and congratulations to all of our graduates! You've done great work and should be proud of your accomplishments. Remember, even in academics, all things that are true lead us closer to Christ, regardless of their discipline.
Second, happy birthday to the Church! Pentecost can rightly be considered the birthday of the Catholic Church as her apostolic mission begins as the Apostles go forth proclaiming the name of Jesus. This weekend's solemnity too, is a great chance for us to reflect on how prominent is the Holy Spirit in our daily life. Do I/we allow the Holy Spirit to govern and influence my thoughts, words, and actions each day? Do I/we allow the Holy Spirit to transform us from within in order to follow Christ and become more perfect disciples?
Have a blessed Pentecost and don't forget to celebrate this glorious apostolic mission to which we've all been given a role!

Thanks for tuning in to this week's video and happy solemnity of the Ascension! This wonderful feast is a great reminder for us of our final goal: to be with Christ forever in Heaven. His Ascension is the completion of the Paschal Mystery and the chain of events that started way back on Holy Thursday. Thus, the Ascension is the glorious culmination of Christ's victory over sin and death. For us too, it's also a reminder that Christ is with us in difficult moments and leads us into new life and that the glory Christ works within us through difficulties are so much greater than the sufferings we endure. See Romans 8:18-21 for Paul's fantastic words on this subject.

Our Lady of Fatima
Hello St. Mary Magdalene,
Thank you for your prayers while I was away on pilgrimage, know that I was praying for you too. It was a highlight for me to visit the apparition site of Our Lady of Fatima and to be able to celebrate Mass at the actual site where the apparition took place. How cool then that the traveling pilgrim statue is now coming to St. Mary Magdalene this Saturday May 13th! She'll be available from 8am until 6pm with a talk given after the 8am Mass and at 4pm before the Vigil Mass. The rest of the day she'll be in our adoration chapel for veneration.

If you're like me, the Lenten penance is setting in pretty thoroughly and you're encountering challenges, I know I am. These moments are great opportunities though to make a choice for Christ in those moments of temptation. These individual choices are the path to sainthood and opportunities for us to choose Christ in all things. So, don't give in when challenged, choose Christ!

Sanctuary Update!
Hello St. Mary Magdalene,
Thanks for tuning in to this week’s video with me, Fr. Chris. It’s been a while since my last update on our sanctuary so that’s what we’ll talk about today! I’ve got some dates of what’s happening! I also have pictures of what several of these components will look like. First, beginning March 13th until March 31st we’ll be installing our muralwork and having the front panel of our ceiling painted with gold stars! During this time we’ll have use of most of the church, the only area that will be unavailable to us will be our sanctuary due to the scaffolding. The timing of this installation also means that we’ll have all of our artwork in time for Palm Sunday and Holy Week! I don’t have any additional pictures of this muralwork because I don’t want to spoil the surprise and the magnificence of the unveiling. We’ll see it unfold together as a community during the installation. Second, our new altar furnishings which so many of you generously paid for will be in at the same time, meaning that these pieces too will be ready for liturgical use on Palm Sunday. My plan for Palm Sunday then is to bless items at each of the Sunday Masses so that the whole parish can participate in the blessing and dedication of these items. Third, you’ve seen in the design drawings that we’re having new marble altars and an ambo in the sanctuary. Thanks to some generous donors, these items are fully funded, designed, and waiting for the marble to arrive so that fabrication can begin. These pieces should be ready for installation at Mary Magdalene in early June. Here are some photos of the altar and ambo pieces and how they tie in with our overall theme. Once all these pieces, murals, altars, and furnishings, are installed we’ll have an open house in June where everyone will be invited to come see these pieces up close. More information with specific details will come later. In the meantime, we’ll run features in the bulletin describing each piece. Thank you all for your prayers, support, and patience as we enhance our sanctuary space. I am excited to see this beautiful sacred art come to our parish in order to help us enter more deeply into prayer and the holy sacrifice of the Mass!
Some of the meaning of these symbols. More detailed explanations will come in the bulletin, website, and additional correspondence.
Pelican: A Eucharistic symbol as mother pelicans will actually pluck the flesh from their own body and feed it to their young, giving their life that the children may live.
Phoenix: A mythological bird that rises from the ashes with a word of command like what St. Paul describes in 1 Thessalonians 4:16.
Peacock: A bird found regularly in the catacombs of Rome symbolizing resurrection. Peacock flesh resists decomposition and was thus adopted by the early Christians as a sign of our faith in Christ resisting the ravages of death.

Happy Feast of St. Blaise!
Hello St. Mary Magdalene,
Today's video is a short reflection on St. Blaise, a 4th century bishop and martyr who died in 316.
He's associated with throats and candles because he worked a miracle saving a young boy from choking on a fish bone which had become lodged in the boys' throat. Candles come from Blaise's imprisonment when a woman brought him two candles so that he'd have light in his prison cell. This woman had received a miracle from Blaise earlier when he saved her prized pig from a wolf. So cool these saintly connections! Let us ask St. Blaise to pray for us that we may stay in good health.
Blessing of St. Blaise, "Through the intercession of St. Blaise bishop and martyr, may God deliver you from every disease of the throat and of every other illness. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

I wanted to share a brief reflection on the upcoming Gospel for this Sunday, the 3rd week of ordinary time. It's the calling of Simon, Andrew, James, and John and I've always been fascinated at how the Lord calls them not in some extravagant way but by meeting them where they are, cleaning their nets after fishing. This is something they did everyday part of the "daily grind" as we might phrase it today, and yet, the Lord met them there! For us, what a great reminder that the Lord comes to us too in the things we do daily.
Give us, O Lord, the grace to see you at work in our daily life!

January Sanctuary Update and Ordinary Time
First, I wanted to give a brief update regarding our sanctuary project. I've heard from the vendor that around Ash Wednesday our new sanctuary furnishings will arrive and that we'll now be installing our murals at the end of February into early March.

Remembering Pope Benedict XVI
With the passing of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI I wanted to share some personal reflections about Pope Benedict and what he's meant in my life. I will miss him but am grateful for his witness and teaching of the faith.

Happy Advent! This is my favorite time of year. There's a palatable joy and eagerness as we await the coming of Christ. During this season too, we have an incredible opportunity to walk with Mary in her final month of pregnancy and await the birth of Christ and His breaking into our world. What a gift! Let Mary walk with you and help to fill your heart with joy in anticipation of Christ's coming.
Make sure too, that you take time to spiritually prepare for Christ's coming. He enters our world and breaks into our lives so that we may never be the same!
May Our Lady guide and intercede for us so that our joy may be complete when Christ comes!

Hello St. Mary Magdalene,
Thanks for tuning in to this week’s video. I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. It’s hard to believe that this weekend is the First Sunday of Advent, the start of a new liturgical year and the time of preparation for Christ’s coming. This is a fantastic season of hope and expectation and one of my favorite times of year. So, amidst the preparation for Christmas let’s not forget to prepare your heart, mind, and soul for the coming of Christ so that our joy may be full at His coming. Throughout each day in Advent, do something intentional to help both grow your faith and to become more aware of how and where Christ is present in your life.
Also, I wanted to announce that beginning this weekend, we’ll be bringing back the Precious Blood for distribution during Mass. I know this is cold and flu season but the chalice is optional, you don’t have to receive it if you don’t want to. While not necessary to receive from the chalice, the Church also teaches that receiving the Body and Blood during Mass is a more full sign of Communion. How the chalices will work is that we’ll have four stations available as you return down the aisles to your seats. After receiving from the rail, return to your seats as normal and on the way you’ll see the Extraordinary Ministers with the Precious Blood on your way back. I’m excited to have the chalices return.
Next, I want to thank you all for your patience as we continue improving our sound in the church. Thanks to an anonymous donor we’ve been able to add several more speakers in strategic locations, rewire our system through the ceiling, and purchase and install a new amplifier, some of which was done as recently as this week. Now we are working to balance the system for both sound and intelligibility so I thank you for your continued patience as we make these fine tuning adjustments.
Finally, I wanted to offer a short catechesis on the Advent Wreath. I’ll link to a summary article in the description, and our Flocknote. From what we can tell the Advent Wreath comes from Germany and although we don’t know exactly when it started, historical records do show that by the 1600’s the practice was widespread. Its circular shape represents God’s infinite nature (without beginning or end) and His Love for us without end. The candles symbolize Christ, the Light of the world coming into the darkness of sin and each has its own theme: hope, peace, joy, and love. So, as we get our Advent wreaths ready, let this visible sign remind us all that Christ comes to save us, and that His Love for us is too great to leave us in our brokenness. May the Light of Christ illuminate us all this Advent season and help us to turn away from sin and towards Your Merciful Love!

Reopening Weekend!
Hello St. Mary Magdalene,
Thanks for tuning in to this week’s video with me, Fr. Chris. This weekend we are back in our full church and I’m so excited to celebrate with you all in this new space. Though the furnishings in our sanctuary are temporary, we are thrilled to have our new tabernacle here and to start using it to house the Lord. I will bless the tabernacle at the vigil Mass on Saturday (tomorrow).
With us moving back in here are a few things to know:
First, the new renovations have changed the acoustics of our building. Our sound team has been working on re-balancing our mics and speaker system and will be continuing to make improvements during the coming weeks so please be patient during these adjustments. Remember that when run sound testing outside of Mass, the room isn’t occupied and it sounds different when it's empty than it does when full of people. This means that some observations and experimental balancing can only happen during Mass so thank you for bearing with us as we seek to improve this area.
Second, we’ll be distributing Communion from our altar rail using only the priest and the deacon as ordinary ministers of Holy Communion. Our ushers will also be giving directions on how to fill the rail so please watch the ushers for guidance. We’ll be watching and observing over the next few weeks and making refinements as needed. Based on what I’ve seen from other parishes with altar rails this should not prolong Communion. However, I do want to speak to that point, even if Mass does go a bit longer that’s not a bad thing. Remember that after receiving Communion, you’ve got about 15-20 minutes where Jesus is literally inside you! How are you spending that time? What better way than to pray and give thanks for this incredible gift and to ask Him to help you throughout the coming week!
Third, our mural work is in production and is anticipated to be installed within the next six months. Our altars and ambo are expected to follow shortly after, as they are custom made marble pieces tailored to the size, theme, and dimensions of our sanctuary space.
Additionally, I was able to find out that the Italian marble now in our sanctuary came to us from the famous quarries of the Carrara region: the same region which provided marble used by Michelangelo and in the construction of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome!
Lastly, on Monday we celebrate the Assumption of Mary, and while it’s not a holy day this year it’s still a solemnity when we celebrate Our Lady being taken up to Heaven. Her Assumption is a sign of hope for us and a reminder of the hope of the Resurrection of the dead. So, to conclude our video today, let us ask our Blessed Mother to intercede for us and to bolster our faith in Christ, please join me in praying the Hail Holy Queen…

Hello St. Mary Magdalene,
Last week I communicated that we’ve had a two week delay on our re-opening date, today I’m confirming that we’re on track to meet that deadline and confirm that we are planning on re-opening on August 13th and 14th at all Sunday Masses that day. Daily Masses will resume in the full space on August 15th. Thank you again for your patience. To that end, I wanted to share with you all too, in this Flocknote and on our website you’ll find a wish list of items for our new sanctuary space. We’re asking for these new items in order to ensure consistency, coordination, and coherence of our liturgical items so that they match thematically. It’s similar to doing a remodel in your home and needing new furnishings so that the décor matches. Our old liturgical furnishings will be donated to another parish. I have some ideas in mind and am coordinating that in the weeks to come. Also, today, July 22nd is our patronal feast day, St. Mary Magdalene, so I’d be remiss if I didn’t share a few thoughts about her. She’s often referred to as the “Apostle to the Apostles” a title which denotes her beautiful role and mission as the first witness of our Resurrected Lord. It’s not an indicator that she was ordained a priest, she wasn’t, but she was given a special role. Our word “Apostle” in English comes from the Greek “Apostelos” which means to send. Biblically we see this word used in the New Testament with a double meaning, indicating either mission or rank (such as Peter and Paul the Apostles). In reference to Mary Magdalene then, it’s this first context that the Church applies to Mary Magdalene, that she was sent to announce the Good News of Jesus’s Resurrection to the Apostles who were then sent out to proclaim that same message to all the world. Mary Magdalene then, today is venerated in a particular way reminding us that the call to evangelize, to share the Good News of Jesus Christ isn’t just a role for bishops, priests, and deacons, but for all the baptized, all those who love Jesus. Therefore, in honor of St. Mary Magdalene, who’s an apostle in your life? Who’s someone that’s bolstered your faith? How can you share your faith with someone today and everyday?

Our New Tabernacle!

I hope you enjoyed last week's sneak peek of the sanctuary. It's coming together beautifully and I'm so eager to have us all together again in the new space. However, the detailed installation of the marble is taking longer than the crew predicted, which means that our move in date is now delayed by two weeks to August 13/14th. July Sanctuary Update
Hello St. Mary Magdalene,
Thanks for tuning in to this week’s video. Today is my last sneak peek preview video because we’re going to be able to move back into the full space and celebrate Mass in this sanctuary the last weekend of July. Beginning with the Saturday vigil Mass on July 30th, and Sunday Masses on the 31st we’ll be back in our full worship space for all weekend and weekday liturgies.
When we move back in you’ll see the architectural renovations and the walls primed for our mural work. Our murals are currently being made, they are custom painted and should be installed before Christmas 2022. We’re going to continue to use our current altar furnishings in this space for the next several months until our custom altar and furnishings are ready.
Looking around now you can see that they’re installing marble in our sanctuary, so enjoy this glimpse of the marble tile. What happens between now and re-opening is the finishing of the marble, installation of carpet and the top of our altar rail. Then, cleaning up the space and resetting chairs and the overall space for Mass. We’re also going to be training ushers and clergy on the new procedures for the distribution of Communion, which will take place from the rail. At the rail you’ll be able to receive kneeling or standing and, as the Church permits, either on the tongue or on the hand. I’ll give more detailed guidance and instructions in the coming weeks.
Looking at the sanctuary now, you may notice some differences compared to the concept design posted in the narthex and on our website. These differences are due to some architectural discrepancies which were not discovered until after demolition. Hence, my team and I have had to make some adjustments along the way, but, they’ve actually turned out to be a blessing in disguise as we now have actually more room for artwork in these frieze areas below the arches.
I am excited about us moving back in and the great gift this renovation will be to our parish community. This is a beautiful first step in converting our building into a permanent worship space for the glory of the Risen Lord.
I want to again thank all of you for your continued prayers and support for this project and for your patience as we’ve navigated through these difficulties together, trusting in God's Providence and that He is, as we pray every week, leading our project “day by day to its successful completion.

Sanctuary Update
Hello St. Mary Magdalene,
The marble and decorative millwork have arrived! Enjoy the tour of the current work on the other side of the wall! To recap here are the main points:
1. We're anticipating moving back into the full church after construction finishes in early August!
2. Our custom mural work and altar furnishings will be ready over the next several months. In the meantime we'll continue to use what we already have.
3. We still have construction to finish up including the installation of the millwork and tile, installing carpet, cleaning up and resetting the Church.

Sanctuary Update May 2022
Hello St. Mary Magdalene,
I’m here in our church amidst the renovations to give an update on our progress. As you can see we’ve laid our concrete foundation for the new sanctuary and they’ve laid the posts for our altar rail. We’ve also had the ceiling and back wall painted to match the theme of the artwork that will be installed in our sanctuary. Construction should be completed late this summer. We’re running into supply chain issues affecting the delivery of our marble and other materials. These setbacks have a cascading effect into other areas of the project which is delaying the completion of this project. What remains is the delivery and installation of the marble for the sanctuary, carpeting, the decorative woodwork, the altar rail, and final cleanup.
In order to help expedite the full use of our building again, once these items have been completed we’ll be able move back into our full church. Final elements (such as our artwork and our new altars) will be installed later. This will help us again to utilize our full space especially during these summer hotter months. Due to ongoing supply issues I can’t give any specific dates as to when these additional components will be completed, but my team and I are hoping for a late 2022 completion of the entire project.
Thank you all for your prayers and support of this project. This is taking longer than anticipated, but it’s also giving my team and I a chance to be intentional about what we do so that we can build something that reflects the parish of St. Mary Magdalene and will endure. I am excited to see the project through to its successful completion and can’t wait to celebrate with you all in our new space. I will continue to provide further updates as they become available.

Divine Mercy Sunday
Hello St. Mary Magdalene,
Happy Divine Mercy Sunday. What a beautiful devotion we celebrate this weekend. Our English word "mercy" comes from the Latin word "misericors" which means "to pity the heart." Practically this term refers to when another person enters into the brokenness of another and thus share their burden. Christ therefore does just that, He enters our brokenness in order to set us free.
So, on this weekend let us recall Our Lord's desire to enter our brokenness and show us His grace in a particular way. Lord may your mercy be on us as we place our trust in you!

Renovation update
Hello St. Mary Magdalene,
Thanks for tuning into another weekly video with me, Fr. Chris. It’s with great joy that I can share with you all that our renovations will begin on March 14th! This means that this weekend, March 5th and 6th will be the last weekend in our full church. This will be a huge change but it will also give us the time we need to move furnishings out of the church and prepare it for renovations. Thus, beginning Monday March 7th, all our daily Masses (8am Monday through Saturday) will take place in our adoration chapel. Our weekend Masses will be held in the hall space which we’ll be turned into a temporary worship space on the weekends. We’ll also be utilizing outdoor seating for Sundays. Please feel free to bring your own chairs, sun protection, and some water if you’ll be sitting outside.
For Sunday Masses, due to the way we’ll have the hall arranged please enter through the south doors, between the courtyard and the office.
We will still be having confessions during this project, those will take place in our Holy Family room, also known as our cry room. Confessions will continue at our regularly scheduled times. During Lent our stations of the Cross devotion will be led by our deacons every Friday at 6pm in our outdoor prayer garden. This garden is located on the south side of the campus behind the office/chapel building.
Construction will take several months to complete and I know that there will be some major sacrifices made on everyone’s part. I thank you for making these sacrifices and for your patience as my staff and I navigate the construction process. Make sure you’re visiting our website, reading our Flocknotes, periodic bulletin articles, and continuing to watch these videos for ongoing updates while we renovate.

Hello St. Mary Magdalene,
Hard to believe that Lent is here next week! I pray that you Lenten journey will be a fruitful one. To assist you come see our new external stations of the cross. The result of a young man from our parish's Eagle Scout project, these stations can be found behind the office in the prayer garden.
Also, with Lent so close, have you prayed over what the Lord is asking you to give up for Lent? It's a challenge for sure, and that's the point, our Lenten disciplines should sting and have a decent amount of sacrifice made for the sake of Christ. That's usually a good sign that we've chosen a good penance.
Lastly too, to get us into the spirit of Lent, our Knights of Columbus are helping us celebrate Mardi Gras by putting on a pancake breakfast for us after all morning Masses on the 27th. Come and enjoy some great food and fellowship before our Lenten journey begins.

This weekend we celebrate the baptism of the Lord, the inauguration of Jesus' public ministry and a chance for us to renew the graces of our own baptism and our adoption as God's sons and daughters!
Also, Patrick Madrid will be coming to St. Mary Magdalene on February 11, 2022 from 7-9pm! He'll be giving a talk on "Mary at the Foot of the Cross" helping us to prepare for Lent. Admission is free and open to the public so bring a friend or three.

Today's video is a quick one but I wanted to give a cool update on our sanctuary. March 14, 2022 is our projected start date. This means we'll finish by June 1, 2022! Thank you for all of your prayers and support in getting to this point. I am excited for what this will do for our parish and am grateful for your support and for my team that's helped us get here.
Also I pray that the Blessed and Holy Mother of God may watch over all of us and lead us closer to Jesus in this upcoming year. January 1, 2022 is the celebration of Mary the Mother of God, Mass will be at 9am that day, come and join us!

Happy Advent
Hello St. Mary Magdalene,
Thank you for your prayers during my quarantine. I'm back and feeling great. I've been cleared of all symptoms and have negative tests.
Today marks a special shift in our liturgy and Advent preparations with what's called the "O Antiphons" found in the 7 verses of the hymn "O Come, O Come Emmanuel." These 7 antiphons speak to 7 prophecies fulfilled in Christ from the Old Testament and the Church focuses on these specifically by using them in the liturgy to further build our expectant joy at the coming of the Messiah! "O Come, O Come Emmanuel" is one of my favorite hymns, I pray with it regularly throughout Advent as a beautiful reminder that God is here with us and that He has not (nor will He ever) leave us!

Sanctuary Update!

Great news, we've received our notice to proceed on our sanctuary renovations! This does mean though that our construction start date has been pushed out to mid-March 2022.

Enjoy this beautiful three day celebration of All Hallows (Halloween), All Saints Day, and All Souls Day. Three days where we: turn our hearts to the Lord in repentance, draw inspiration from the saints in order that we too may seek holiness, and then All Souls where we pray for our dead that they may enjoy eternal life with Christ.

It's good to be back with you. I'm so excited to see parish life coming back in full. We've had several programs start within the past two weeks including: EDGE, GS24, Family Formation, and Sacred Music. It's a joy for me to see so many participants in these programs, in that I am blessed to see how and where the Lord is working in your lives.
We also get two powerful saints to celebrate today, September 17th: Robert Bellarmine and Hildegard of Bingen. Both of which are doctors of the Church meaning that they're known for their profound gifts of teaching and witnessing to the Gospel through their talents and abilities. May these two great saints inspire us to offer our own talents and abilities to Christ.

Happy Labor Day and celebrating Pope St. Gregory the Great
Hello St. Mary Magdalene,
Happy Labor Day! In today's video I reflect on Pope St. Gregory the Great whose feast the Church celebrates every September 3rd. He died in 604 AD and began one of the great missionary efforts within the Church sending missionaries and priests to: England, France, Spain, and Africa. He also wrote down music from many different cultures using a notation that still exists today and is the basis for all of western music, Gregorian chant! He's a pretty awesome saint, a great pope, an an inspiring man of prayer and missionary zeal. Pope St. Gregory the great, pray for us!

Assumption and Maximilan Kolbe
Hello St. Mary Magdalene,
Happy Sunday and feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary! We also though celebrate St. Maximilian Kolbe on Saturday August 14th. He's a saint with a fantastic story of heroic, self-sacrificial love in the midst of great evil. Trading his life for another man in Auschwitz, Kolbe is a great example of devotion to the Blessed Mother and of the power of mercy to overcome evil! The man who Kolbe saved would survive the war and would be reunited with his family.

It's good to be back with you. Thank you for your prayers while I was away.
This week we celebrated our patronal feast day on Thursday the 22nd! In our readings for her celebration we see St. Mary Magdalene run to the empty tomb and there she encounters the Risen Lord. After this encounter though she goes forth and tells the Apostles the Good News. There's a beautiful challenge for us in this, to whom do we need to proclaim the Gospel, the Good News that Christ has risen and lives forever? Let's honor our patroness by witnessing and proclaiming the Resurrection in thought, word, and deed!

The challenge this offers then is to think about in what ways we need to decrease so that the Lord may increase in our lives? Happy Easter! The glorious Easter season lasts 8 weeks, longer than the 7 weeks of Lent so that we can celebrate the good things God has done and His victory over sin, suffering, evil, and death!
Next, I want to say a huge thank you to our Knights of Columbus and all of our volunteers who helped with last week's pancake breakfast and grill out. It was an amazing time and a gift to be able to enjoy some fellowship together! Thank you sir knights for making that possible!
Finally, you'll notice a few modifications to some of our Communion protocols. These are done in accord with new guidelines and recommendations from the Diocese of Phoenix which works in collaboration with the state and with health officials. We are still be safe, prudent, and responsible, but also working on slowly restoring some of our normal procedures.
Have a blessed Easter, I know I've said this many times but it is truly a joy to be able to celebrate with you again, especially passing these weeks that we were unable to celebrate together last year. Know that you and your families continue to be in my prayers. Please pray for me, our parish, our staff, and one another.

Sanctuary Renovation
Hello St. Mary Magdalene, Happy Divine Mercy Sunday! Today I'm so excited and blessed to be able to share with you the design for our sanctuary renovation! The picture will be on display at all Masses this weekend. Also, you'll hear from Geoff and Ruth Stricklin from New Jerusalem Studios who've been helping with the sanctuary design. Just to give a summary here of the main points in this video:

This is the fruit of our fundraising endeavors as a parish over the past 3.5 to 4 years.

This is fully funded and will NOT incur additional debt to St. Mary Magdalene.

Two campaigns and an anonymous donor have made this project possible.

This will enhance our current space by gifting us with some beautiful sacred art to help us further enter into the liturgy.

I am continuing efforts to build a parish hall and am re-evaluating our options.

This sanctuary project is slated to begin sometime late this summer and will take ~120 days to complete once we start.

As new information becomes available I'll share the details with you.

This project has been approved by the Diocese of Phoenix.

Lenten Perseverance
Hello St. Mary Magdalene!
Hard to believe we're just about half way through lent! I find myself wearing down in my resolve to maintain my Lenten disciplines and it's at times like this when I turn to the Lord and renew my gaze upon Him to find strength to endure. This is when the Lord pours forth His mercy and grace: His heart pours itself out on us in order that we might continue walking toward Him. Remember, He works slowly and accurately over time so don't give up! Keep the faith.

Hello St. Mary Magdalene, I was praying with this verse the other day: Isaiah 43:19 "Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? What a beautiful reflection the Lord led me into about seeing something new and all the new ways He's at work in my life, in you all, and in our parish and I just wanted to share that with you.
