In Genesis chapter 3, we are introduced to a new character, the Serpent. In this pivotal chapter of scripture, we see the first example of spiritual warfare as Satan comes to tempt Eve. His tactics haven't changed; he continues to use them to this day. Not only do we have an enemy, but more importantly, we have a Savior.
In God's first command to humanity, He lays down a boundary to protect the blessings He is giving. We see God's creation of Eve, made equal, yet different than Adam. Then God creates marriage and gives us the foundational laws of marriage.
In Genesis 2 God gives us a detailed account of the creation of man. Here we get to see who God made us to be, and how He made us to relate to Him. Our expectation of what God can do is often set more by our circumstances than the reality of who God is. As God calls the Jewish people to leave Babylon and live by faith in Jerusalem, He has to confront their expectations of what He will do.
When the Jewish people returned to rebuild the temple, the work was slow and eventually stopped. They had lost hope and couldn't seem to make any progress. As they began to return to the Lord, the Lord kept His word and returned to them. The one thing that would change everything about their situation, was the presence of God.

What do we do with a corrupt culture? Nehemiah chose to confront it. When there is no confrontation, sin is allowed to flourish. A God-honoring life will require a certain amount of confrontation.
From the beginning, God has intended rest for His people. We have so many reasons why we don't rest, "I can't afford to take a day off. Don't you know how much I have to do?" In our self-inflicted busyness, we become frustrated and bitter and completely miss God's gift of rest.
Nehemiah returns to find the people had abandoned bringing in the tithe. Giving is certainly something we are called to do, but rather than guilt us, God wants us to see the blessing that is found in giving.
