Moses is the mediator for all of Israel, but he is only one man and he is unable to fulfill his role and responsibility by doing it all alone. We all have roles and responsibilities we are governed by an authority - God's Word it defines our faithfulness or our failure in responding to God's revelation of Himself.
Israel is attacked by Amalek and prevails through because God is their banner. The spiritual life is a battle and we need help to be faithful and see victory.
Manna is the bread from heaven which gives life - a typing of Jesus who later declares - I AM the bread of life!
YHWH responds to the Israelites grumbling with the giving of manna (manna means "portion") with some rules about how & when t collect it. The Lord is testing the Israelites with the provision of manna to see if they will trust Him (instead of themselves) for their daily portion.
The Israelites are tested by God and fail to honor him with faith, instead, they grumble and complain. We need to allow the example of the Israelites warn us about an unbelieving heart that grumbles against God.
The Israelites find themselves in the wilderness with no water. When they get to Marah the water is bitter and undrinkable. The people cry out against Moses, but Moses cries out to God. Moses' obedience to God's word of instruction is an example of God's purpose in our lives and is a type of Christ whose perfect obedience - even unto death gives us access to the waters of life!
Jesus is called a light in darkness. What does that mean for us who live in darkness? How do we receive the light that Jesus brings?
Jesus is God, Jesus is man. This is the central truth of Christmas and an idea communicated all throughout Scripture - The incarnation means Jesus added what he was not by nature - mortality! Flesh and blood. Jesus does this to rescue us who are flesh and blood. He assumes the laws of physical death and bears the weight of what we cannot. God came for YOU!
The world seems to be full of chaos and disorder - why is that? Because we cannot experience the ideal peace that God created for our first parents. What is shalom and how is Jesus the Prince of Peace for us right now?
Labels come with expectations and preparing for Christmas always starts with the labels on the outside of our boxes of stuff. Yet, what we find is that our expectations of Christmas and the preparations built around those expectations are not Biblical expectations, they're personal. What should we do differently to prepare based on the "labels" we find on God's Christmas?
The first song recorded in Scripture is the "song of Moses" following God's victory over Pharaoh and the Egyptians and the Red Sea. What should we "think" about worship in song? What should we think about worship in general? Rule 1 - Worship is not for you
The Holy Spirit gives makes us distinct as God calls us His own by giving us the Spirit. The Spirit leads us in righteousness and secures us to FINAL salvation, the most important thing!
God is PRESENT with the Israelites and His presence leads them, guides them, comforts them and ultimately is taking them to a place where they are free from slavery to sin. The Holy Spirit is now not just a pillar in front of us but it is a presence inside of us. How does God lead us with His Spirit?
God has led the Israelites to the Red Sea and they seem to be trapped, pursued by Pharaoh and his army. Moses and the people are almost in despair when God commands them to go FORWARD because the way was THROUGH the sea. God provides a way for them and He provides a way for us to walk in faith, following our redeemer in the way - so that we can leave our old lives behind and be made holy! This is a picture of baptism!
When Israel U-turns, Pharaoh & Egypt all U-turn as well - then they hit dead ends. How should we handle being backed up and turned around?
Being "saved" isn't the end - it's a beginning! The Exodus shows us this and God's purpose in our lives is shown through the Feast of Unleavened Bread.
The 10th Plague is God's judgment on all the firstborn of Egypt. Everyone except for those who sacrifice a substitute according to God's instruction.
How do we understand God's sovereignty? Paul's apologetic in Romans 9 is that grace is only grace when it is given by His own good pleasure and will.
YHWH who speaks all creation into being shows his power and might in the plagues shows that He will judge those who do not recognize Him, yet he saves and preserves some - this is God's grace, common and special.
The Plagues are 10 strikes against Egypt - Its Ruler. It People. A Way Of Life. A Spiritual System. The Land Itself. God is using these plagues to reveal himself.
Aaron's staff (the staff of God) is turned in to a snake, it consumes the magician's snakes. This picture of victory is not just the triumph of one snake over another, or Moses and Aaron over Pharaoh, but tells the entire story of redemption and the promise of ultimate victory over the serpent from Genesis 3:15 and described in Revelation.
8 Then the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, 9 “When Pharaoh says to you, ‘Prove yourselves by working a miracle,’ then you shall say to Aaron, ‘Take your staff and cast it down before Pharaoh, that it may become a serpent.’” 10 So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and did just as the Lord commanded. Aaron cast down his staff before Pharaoh and his servants, and it became a serpent. 11 Then Pharaoh summoned the wise men and the sorcerers, and they, the magicians of Egypt, also did the same by their secret arts. 12 For each man cast down his staff, and they became serpents. But Aaron's staff swallowed up their staffs. 13 Still Pharaoh's heart was hardened, and he would not listen to them, as the Lord had said.
