In today's episode, Prep Hoops Ohio's Mike Roth (@mikerothou) and I (@Ohiohshoops) breakdown 48 districts across Division 2, 3, & 4. We pick our district winners and I hit Mike with some tough questions at the end of the episode. You don't want to miss this episode.
The story of the Skyvue Golden Hawks can't be summed up in a 60-minute podcast and you likely had to have lived it to truly understand the magnitude, but we do our best to bring this story back to life with guest and star guard Mitch Hannahs.
Skyvue, which was located in Graysville, Ohio (less than 100 people), eventually consolidated with Woodsfield HS in 1994 to form Monroe Central. However, a decade earlier, the Golden Hawks were rockstars in Monroe County. The team led by star guard Mitch Hannahs and running mates Todd Hilverding, Brian Leasure, Aaron Kilburn, and Vince Hogue went to back-to-back state tournaments in Class A. In 1984, Coach Mark Huffman's team dropped a (54-53) decision to Columbus Wehrle.
The Golden Hawks would return in 1985 behind almost the same cast of characters, and this time Skyvue was ready to bring home the gold. The Black-and-Gold defeated previously unbeaten Van Buren in the semis before locking up with Jackson Center in an epic title game. With Huffman's club in control, it seemed Skyvue was going to do the unthinkable and bring home a basketball state championship. However, Jackson Center would have other ideas in a "Hoosiers" like ending.
Though, two months later, Hannahs and Hilverding behind head coach Mark Huffman would help Skyvue capture the 1985 Class A State Baseball crown. The Golden Hawks defeated the defending state champs (previously unbeaten Miller City) and then Fort Loramie in the finals.

Brook Cupps has took over at Centerville High School (Ohio) in the spring of 2012 following an ultra-successful stint at St. Paris Graham (OH). In year 9, Cupps led the Elks to the 2021 Division I State Championship outlasting Westerville Central in a classic at UD Arena in Dayton, Ohio.
Cupps drops all kinds of wisdom in this episode for young coaches, aspiring coaches, and veterans coaches. We go into his four core values and how those values helped his team through an unusual 365 days.

The story of the 1987-1988 Cincinnati Woodward Bulldogs can't be told without revisiting the prior season. Coach Larry Miller's Bulldogs saw their season abruptly end in the winter of 1987, but that wouldn't stop the next version of Woodward High School basketball. The Bulldogs finished the campaign with a (26-2) mark capturing the first Division 1 state championship in OHSAA history. The team was led by the sensational Chip Jones and junior D.J. Boston. When discussing the greatest Cincinnati high school basketball team of all time, '88 Woodward has to be on the shortlist. As far as individuals go, if you never heard of Chip Jones, grab a pen and notebook. The amount of depth this team produced was simply unmatched. The Bulldogs ran away with the state championships defeating Columbus Linden McKinley (107-70) behind 27 points from Boston, 24 by Jones, and Orlando Berry added 17. Boston (51 points & 20 rebounds) and Jones (40 points) would be named Most Outstanding Players of the state tournament. Woodward would make another run in 1989 behind Boston, Berry, Melvin Bostic, and Katara Reliford, but the Bulldogs would fall to eventual champion Toledo Macomber in the state semifinals (57-50) behind 29 points and 7 rebounds for Ohio's Mr. Basketball Jimmy Jackson.

The Middletown Middies dominated high school basketball from 1944-1959 winning 7 state championships. However, nothing compared to the years between 1955 and 1958 where the Middies won 76 consecutive games and 2 state titles before losing to Columbus North (63-62) in the 1958 state semifinals. The 76-game streak was spearheaded by legendary head coach Paul Walker and Parade All-American Jerry Lucas.
Lucas takes us back in time with a special blast from the past. The man knowns as "Dr. Memory" shares some unbelievable stories and memories from his days at Middletown, Ohio State, the Olympics, and his time in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Most importantly, he discusses his lifelong passion for learning and education.
Lucas is one of three people to win a high school, college, Olympic, and professional basketball championship.
This is simply an incredible conversation with a true legend of the game.

In the mid-1990s a talented bunch of boy's basketball players from Middle Point, Ohio took the state by storm. A village of less than 600 produced three 1,000-point scorers in the same class, saw five players average near double figures, and amass a sparkling (53-1) record during the 1995-1996 & 1996-1997 seasons which resulted in a state runner-up and state championship.

The winter of 1989-1990 through the winter of 1990-1991 saw the St. Henry Redskins capture the attention of the Buckeye State. Thirty years later, people still want to talk about and marvel over the boys from Mercer County. What if I told you a town of just over 1,300 people with two stoplights produced a senior class that went (51-2) in basketball earning state championships as juniors and senior and (14-0) on the gridiron as seniors. What if I also told you that senior class produced two Ohio State football commitments, 1 Penn State commit, 1 Toledo commit, two NFL players, a two-time All-American, a Pro-Bowler, and a Super Bowl Champion. The group featured Bobby Hoying, Kevin Niekamp, and Scott Brunswick. This story told by Scott Brunswick is one you don't want to miss and likely had to have been there to believe it.

You won't want to miss our latest conversation with Cincinnati Moeller head coach Carl Kremer. The 1978 Miami East grad has won 575 games in his 29 seasons with the Crusaders at a 79% winning percentage.

Our latest conversation is with former Lexington and Mansfield Senior head coach Gregg Collins. We cover his career at both historic schools. Inside the episode:
The 1986-1987 regional qualifier featuring three sophomores, who would become the centerpieces of what was to come. The 1988-1989 state championship season featuring Tom Scholl, Jeff Hoeppner, and Donn Restille. The 1990-1991 state championship season led by the great Jamie Feick, who would go on to play at Michigan State and for the Charlotte Hornets, San Antonio Spurs, Milwaukee Bucks, and New Jersey Nets. He would later become head coach at his alma mater (Lexington). We discuss why Coach Collins took some time off between coaching jobs. We finish the show talking about his great success at Mansfield Senior where his teams won 20 or more games in six of his 12 seasons at the helm and never won less than 15 contests. HIs 1999 and 2005 Tygers reached the State's Final 4 in Division I. After researching, we found the answer to a question posed on the podcast, which was who beat Willard in the 1989 tournament. The answer was Bowling Green (62-60). We joked about Willard beating Lexington in both of its championship seasons.
My latest conversation with 2017 Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association Class of 2017 Hall of Famer, Dan Hegemier. This is a great show filled with history, stories, triumphs, defeats, and what it takes to be great. Coach Hegemier said Coach Bob Arnzen (Delphos St. John's) told him at the start of his career, "you have to surround yourself with great people" and the man with 524-career wins certainly did that.
I mentioned Coach Hegemier's (74-2) run over a three-year span at Knoxville, and his response was what you would expect from a coach with three state championships.

Today, we turn back the clock, and talk with former Dayton Dunbar head coach Pete Pullen. We talk about his incredible 13-year run with the Wolverines, which saw Pullen guide his squads to four state titles in eight seasons and six trips to Columbus in 11 campaigns. Dunbar's run from 2005-to-2015 can rival any in Ohio history.

Today's episode we preview the Nike Peach Jam with All-Ohio Red 17U Head Coach Corey Tucker, better known as "Coach Tuck." We talk about the team's (1-4) start before finishing the EYBL regular season at (6-2) to qualify for the prestigious Peach Jam in North Augusta, Georgia.
Coach Tuck also gives us his analysis on NEO Tru Game, who qualified for the E16 event after finishing (8-1) in the regular season. The Ohio-based team's only setback came to the Georgia Stars (66-62). Coach Tuck talks about one of the hottest prospects in the Buckeye State in Akron SVSM's Malaki Branham.
On today's show, I welcome back Martins Ferry Times Leader Sports Editor Seth Staskey to talk about the 2004 Bellaire Big Reds. Seth covered every game of the magical run, which Gene Ammirante's team took the All-American town on. The season ended in heart-breaking fashion, much like its 1995 Division IV State Football Final, but not before the Big Reds gave its town something to remember.
- Bellaire finished the year (22-5) and made the school's first and only state tournament.
- Aaron Agnew would graduate and move on to Iowa State.
- Sophomore Nate Davis, who eventually was drafted in the 5th Round by the San Francisco 49ers, is currently 9th all-time on Ohio's scoring list and 7th in rebounds. He had Ball State (FB) in the Top 10, at one point, before losing to Buffalo.
- The team featured three players which scored 1,000 or more points (Agnew, Davis, and Mike Fisher).
- The Big Reds regular season losses included Upper St. Clair (featured Dallas Cowboy's Sean Lee), Logan Elm (featured Tyler Evans who hit the game-winner to allow Findlay to win the D2 National Title in 2009), Akron SVSM, and Wheeling Park.
Today, we have a conversation with former Lima Central Catholic head coach Bob Seggerson. Coach Seggerson was inducted into the Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame just one year removed from the bench.

It's been a storybook career to this point, and one that started with becoming head coach at just 23-years-old. Flannery has led the Eagles to two state titles including his first in just his second year on the job. Oh, by the way, the Eagles beat their bitter rival to do it.

This is an absolute can't miss episode, and quite possibly our favorite show to date. Coach Babe Kwasiak and his Father (Tedd Kwasniak) give us a detailed history lesson of Viking Village. We deep-dive into the 1994 season, which ends with the Vikings third state championship and also spend some time in the late 1970's and 1980's. Coach Kwasniak has an uncanny ability to make you believe you are back at St. John Arena in March of 1994. We talk about the humbling loss to Bob Krizancic's Girard Indians in 1993 and how that loss fueled the VASJ into the 1993-1994 season. Coach Kwas even makes reference to Coach Krizancic's beautiful mullet. If you appreciate the history of Ohio basketball, don't miss this episode!
In our third installment of our four-part series remember the 1994 State Champions, we feature Youngstown Ursuline and former head coach Mitch Cerny. Coach Cerny is one of the great story tellers in the business, and his detailed account of that season is quite impressive. Coach Cerny talks us through the improbable tournament run after a (10-10) regular season. After listening to this episode, you may see Ursuline's run a bit differently. Coach Cerny notes some key facts from the regular season that make it seem a little less of an upset, but an unbelievable feat nonetheless.

We remember the incredible run by the Warriors, which eventually ended in a 50-48 overtime triumph of Cincinnati Withrow in the Division I State Championship contest. We touch on the two losses to Mount Vernon and Upper Arlington in the regular season, a district final escape of Pickerington, regional battles with Zanesville and Columbus Eastmoor, and state games against Cleveland Heights and Withrow.
