Triggered traumas and intrusive thoughts can leave you feeling profoundly fearful and alone. Regulation techniques can help calm the nervous system, but an underlying sense of loneliness and vulnerability may remain.

In this episode, I share about the role of relationships in regulating emotions, and how an early lack of support can cause distress into adulthood. Also, I share ways to incorporate your relationship with God into a regulation experience that not only deepens your sense of peace, but invites healing into wounds of emotional misattunement, abandonment, abuse, and neglect.

We often think of the spiritual part of ourselves as being separate from our body/mind/emotions; but the truth is we are experiencing spiritual realities in our natural being –

And that includes spiritual warfare.

But what if that's exactly where hope is found?

Okay, so last week I talked about learning to be vulnerable with safe people- but for me, that's not really where learning to be vulnerable started.

It didn't start with friends or family- it started with my Father.

This week I'm sharing about what it looks like to be vulnerable in a relationship with God, and the healing that comes when we are really honest with Him.

"God, I need people." I prayed this desperate prayer in a season of loneliness and isolation, when NOTHING I did to find community was working out.

I asked- and God answered (and NOT in the way I expected).

In this episode, I'm sharing how God used a 1600-mile move to change more than just my zip code, and what He did to teach me more about hearing (and being heard by) Him.

Okay, you may know you need a break, but you might not be sure how to get one. With all you have going on, it may not seem possible (or responsible), and even if you got a break, you may not feel like you'd be in the headspace to actually enjoy it.

In this episode I want to share with you a little bit about what I learned about rest during my podcast hiatus, and how you can sneak in special moments of rest- even when you can't get away.

Can you say 'no'?

Sometimes we say 'yes' to everything because we want to be seen as dependable and reliable. We like being the one people can count on – and we like how that makes us feel.

It makes us feel like we matter.

But what what if you already matter? What if your significance isn't tied to how much you do for other people at all?

In this episode, I share how I discovered I had a problem with saying 'no,' and how being forced into a season of 'no' actually helped me get free from trouble that people pleasing inevitably causes.

The strange thing about insecurity is the more we try to control it, the more it ends up controlling us.

Insecurities are built on lies, and while there might be one big one you are aware of, often there are dozens of little ones that go with it.

Which makes untangling them like untangling a knotted necklace. Ugh.

In this episode, I share about the unexpected way I discovered the web of lies beneath my own insecurities, and how shifting what you choose to agree with puts you on the fast track to freedom from it all.

We often think of the storms of life as the circumstances outside of us.

But what do you do when the storm is inside?

Our thought lives can be really stormy. Obsessions, worries, and intrusive thoughts can cause us to feel like we are at the mercy of our minds.

Is there a way to make it all stop?

In this episode, I share my own struggles with troubling thoughts and finding freedom in my mind. Also, I talk a little about the role of strongholds and spiritual warfare in our thoughts, and discuss what you can do to fight back.

"Why?" It's a question we all ask.

Why did this have to happen? Why is this my story? Why can't my life be like everyone else's?

We can get frustrated and discouraged when the answers don't come. And yet, not getting answers isn't necessarily a bad thing.

We can get fixated with getting all the answers. We read books, go to seminars, or Google, "What does it mean when..."

But if you got the answers, would you actually feel better? What if answers aren't actually what you need?

In this episode, I share a little about my own journey with grasping for answers, and how in not getting the answers, I discovered what we all need instead.

If setting boundaries (or sticking to them) is hard for you, it's probably because of THIS one thing:

You're trying to "keep the peace."

When we don't have good boundaries, it's usually because we want to avoid conflict, or avoid losing a relationship. But If you have to work so hard to "keep the peace," do you even have real peace in the first place?

In this week's episode, I share why we often strive to "keep the peace," and what happens when we stop all that and experience Jesus' true, lasting peace. I also discuss how knowing His peace helps us find relationships where we can share peace, and deal with relationships where peace isn't shared.

Culture is full of messaging that tells us we can do anything we put our minds to – and yet somewhere along the line, we begin to see that this is just not true. When the circumstances of our lives leave us feeling like we're falling short, the resulting shame and disappointment can be overwhelming. Becky Beresford shares how common cultural expressions meant to empower us can actually leave us feeling very disempowered. She explains how much of the messaging we hear in culture teaches us to be self-dependent, and how liberating it is when weakness and limitation bring us to God-dependency.

Hardships and suffering can knock us down so hard that we just get tired of having to get back up again. But what if it doesn't all depend on us? Lina Abujamra shares how resiliency doesn't really depend on us doing more, but rather on simply learning to abide in the love of God for us as He works through our weaknesses. She also talks about how suffering frees us from a dependency on our own performance so we can instead experience what it is to be loved as children of God.

Unlearning codependent behaviors often means identifying how you learned them in the first place. And while often family of origin issues are a major factor, sometimes our religious contexts can also be part of the problem. Michelle discusses 5 Bible verses that are often misquoted and misapplied that teach us to tolerate toxic and abusive treatment. She discusses why these verses often don't mean what we have been told they do, and points to Scriptures that actually encourage us to avoid harmful people.

While all of these approaches are beneficial to understanding and treating suffering, Michelle shares the reason why they aren't enough to transcend it (and what you can do about it).

It seems there's always something that will try to steal your hope, to get you to give up on the idea that things can ever be better. But does it have to be this way? Is there a way to take our hope back?

It all starts with realizing hope is not a feeling but rather a perspective – a viewpoint that can help us set our sights above what our thoughts, feelings, and circumstances are telling us. Michelle discusses the side-by-side nature of hardship and hope, and shares a key way you can acknowledge your current experience AND set your sights on what still can be.

In dry times, the Bible has much encouragement for us- but we often miss much of it when we don't understand the Bible's Middle Eastern context. Ashley Wilkerson offers new insight into Psalm 23 and discusses how an awareness of Middle Eastern shepherding culture gives us a clearer view of God's heart for us in our personal wilderness seasons. She also exposes misunderstandings of several of the text's metaphors to realign our minds with the truth this passage conveys.

Parenting alone is overwhelming. Worse yet, when we feel like what we're doing isn't working, it's easy to become frustrated and discouraged. Crystal Paine shares how our frustration can cause us to put more pressure on ourselves and our kids, but how resting in the Holy Spirit can transform us and our parenting. She describes how our own shame can cause us to seek results out of our kids, and how "living as loved" teaches us to instead grow in relationship with them.
