Yes we are bloodied but unbowed, after four years of terror, intimidation, racism, murders and lawlessness and even a pandemic. While our darkest days are upon us as we fight to survive COVID-19, the election has given us a signal that our strength will outlast all these insults and threats. We can feel victory is near. We will survive stronger, better.
I mixed over three hours of soothing jazz for our contemplation, so that we can relax, clear our heads, prepare for the upcoming holidays and the bright new year ahead.

This week's Saturday Slam is sadly dedicated to actor, Chadwick Boseman, who passed away yesterday after fighting colon cancer. He was a tour de force in his movies which include 42, about baseball legend, Jackie Robinson and Marvel character Black Panther, in the same titled hit movie.
Only 43, he had many great movies in him which will not come to fruition unfortunately. He will be missed but never forgotten. He has left a legacy.

This vinyl mix is special....I originally posted it but one channel did not broadcast equally, so after a lot of "adjusting", now things are balanced. I hope it was worth it! Seriously, I decided today on this rainy Sunday to dig into the vinyl crates for some of that good jazz, vintage stuff that never gets old. Mixed with a Behringer digital mixer, the oldest in the new line in the OR with my original 1210s from the Bronx, bought at Uncle Steve's on canal street almost 40 years ago. These babies have seen their time but they still look like new and play like new. This was fun. Hope you enjoy it. Here's the playlist.

It never changes; it never gets old. Exercise is good for the body and the mind. I recommend protected time for roughly 150-200 minutes of exercise weekly. It's very relaxing.

One thing for sure, if anyone doubted who is really in control, it's the people, not the politicians, not legal hacks, not the media talking heads and certainly not the police.

PS Turn protest into votes!
As we deal with the COVID-19 pandemic, bloody but unbowed, and in the throws of losing loved ones and fighting this virus on every level, as in history, it appears at least for now that the tide is turning. Hopefully "opening up" will not spell problems for next fall and winter. Let's pray on this.
This mix represents what my people dealt with for several hundred years; slavery. We survived the capture, incarceration, and ultimately the "Middle Passage", that time when my people were brought to the Americas under horrific conditions. Some estimate millions were lost on the way though disease, murder and suicide by drowning. Despite all of this we survived. This is why we are such a strong people.
If we survived that, we will survive COVID-19.
As a prelude for Memorial Day, a weekend which my family traditionally enjoys here in New Jersey, this mix is presented to you all. We are going to work on a virtual party in lieu of our gathering. Brighter days are coming.

My thoughts as a physician regarding COVID-19 opening up strategies to stimulate the economy.
Machine Gun, Jimi Hendrix's Vietnam War protest song performed live at the Fillmore East Theater, Greenwich Village, New York City, New Years Eve, 1970, during the height of national and international protests against the war and a number of other social issues. This was a time of war and every healthy American male wondered if he would be drafted into combat at the time unless they volunteered. Many lives were lost on all sides. Many ran away from military commitment. Regardless, much like today, it was a time when one's sense of mortality was an ever present emotion.
Some relaxation for the afternoon before we charge it up today. Jazz for your soul.

This is dedicated to my wife and her sisters (pictured here) as we slug through the Covid-19 pandemic. Now that we are testing and mentally dealing with the ever increasing numbers of those diagnosed and as we grapple with diagnosing, treating and mourning those lost, we pray for those that have lost loved ones and cherish our family and friends as well as those we don't know. Also, we are dealing with the reality that any of us can contract this virus since it quietly invades our bodies.
We are all in this together. This picture of my wife and her sisters in Riviera Maya, Mexico was taken at the wedding of Ty Williams and Bryan Spells, on Valentine's Day weekend, back in January. It was a lovely event. Though we knew there was "this virus" in China, Japan and Korea at that time, little did we suspect we would be in over our heads fighting off the same illness, literally within a month more or less. Well here we are in the fight of our lives. Also little did we know the economy would tank in such a horrific way; so much so we may be headed towards a depression. Regardless we will get through this. As I admire my wife and her sister siblings, it gives me strength and resolve that with the love of those around us, nothing will bring us down. We will survive.

This mix is dedicated to everyone as we face and fight the Covid-19 pandemic. I have all the confidence that we will survive this but until then there will be suffering. The key at this point is "social distancing" which means that we all have to responsibly stay at distances from one another, not the easiest thing for humans. In this case, "less is more" definitely applies. As we adapt to our circumstances we will develop coping skills, it is our way. Maybe we will read more novels, find new hobbies, reach out to our family and loved ones more through our technological tools or just meditate. I offer this mix as a suggestion that whatever we involve ourselves in during this period, we may want to listen to music and dance to keep our body and mind refreshed. I have always believed in the power of music. I hope you enjoy the music. The graphic is a picture of the medicine Tamiflu which was developed to treat influenza. We will develop a tamiflu medicine for Covid-19 in like manner, have no fear.

We mourn the passing of Juice WRLD who turned 21 just days ago (December 2nd). Too often our talented young men die at too early an age. We extend condolences to his family for their loss. Here is a quick compilation mix honoring this young talent whose life ended before his prime.

Candidates for the 2020 Presidential race present various proposals for health care reform in the United States. Both Presidents Nixon and Johnson attempted to institute universal health care during their tenure but failed. We continue to struggle with providing a system which takes care of all this country's inhabitants even with the passage of the Affordable Care Act.
I discuss my perspective of the health care system based on my current experiences and my educational background, to offer why Universal Health Care represents the best health care system in the United States for its citizens. Universal Health Care which could be termed Medicare For All or Single-Payer Heath Care despite current and past rhetoric ultimately is affordable.

Ja Big, Canadian DJ records his tribute mix to The Godfather of House Music, Frankie Knuckles, known to us during his heyday particularly in metropolitan areas like New York City. Those of you old enough to remember the club scene will recognize the classics Ja Big blends. Enjoy.
The dizzying events which have transpired over the last several years can frustrate most people. This is not by chance. Despite our exhaustion, in my opinion, we need to keep our eye on the ball. Malcolm Nance is a former intelligence agent and counterterrorism expert, who is frequently interviewed on television and radio for his expertise in these current matters. He has written several New York Times best seller books and has just released his third book on matters so germaine to our current political situation.
Mr. Nance was interviewed by Michaelangelo Signorille on Mr. Signorille's show on Sirius satellite channel 127 yesterday. Mr. Nance's views give us food for thought regarding the president and where all this may be headed.
This is a mix dedicated to all those veterans out there who served. A special thanks to my dad, uncles, great aunt, first cousin, grandfather who all served in the military. A special thanks for my extended family's veterans, Micah Johnson, Doctor Johnson and Willie McFadden for their service. Episode Four discusses hypertension. Hypertension is elevated blood pressure and is responsible for sickness and death of many Americans through strokes, heart attacks and kidney failure.
In this medical episode, I discuss what normal blood pressure is and what hypertension is. I further explain both non-medical and medical ways to control the blood pressure.
Hypertension affects millions of Americans and forty percent (40 %) of African Americans in particular.

Bob as many called him affectionately was a classic "depression era" adult; frugal, principled and hard working. Trained as a pilot at age 16, college graduate from Delaware State College like my mom, well read and again like my mom, intellectual.
This podcast briefly and historically describes Ella Lee Williams, my mother. These memories are left for our future progeny so that they gain a sense of who came before them and what their genetics are from my side of the family.
My mother's generation was a special generation regarding the history of America. My parents were born in the 1920s, an era marked by extreme poverty after the Crash of 1929 and heralded by World War II. These people were tough in spirit and body; hard workers and fiercely adherent to Black pride based on many of the injustices that they endured.
