Shannon made the trekk up to Canada once again this summer to do some clinics and talk all things SK. It was at the Ponoka, AB clinic where we got to sit down with all 3 of these barrel racing superstars at the beautiful Galloway facility for a round table!
Its been a while.... but worth the wait for this one we promise! Vauna Walker has an amazing $1.3 million is Barrel Racing earnings , and has many futurity wins and accomplishments on many different horses, she was amazing to listen to and chat with, so sit back and enjoy the ride :D

Brandy, her husband Brian, and their 4 kids run Mcphee Quarter Horses, where they do everything from starting colts and ponies, to training & competing on futurity horses at our highest levels.
Last year, Brandy won the futurity superstakes at the 2021 CBHI In Ponoka on Guys Storm Cloud ( x Guys Casanova Cowboy)
This year, Hwy 97 ( also x Guys Casanova cowboy) finished 8th in the Canadian Futurity standings
(and not to mention took the fast time of the CBHI futurity short go with
a 17.0 that was thrilling to watch)

Tana had an awesome 2021 season with her horses Moose & Ebby!!
She believes everything happens for a reason, and we hear how that played out in her own life a couple times throughout this episode. She tells us all the ways she physcially and mentally prepared her horses and herself for the season and their first Canadian Finals Rodeo!
Tana is a Canadian Finals Rodeo qualifier, CCA & FCA Finalist, and she took home the trailer and championship at the Big Bang in 2021, and won the Sundre Pro Rodeo!!
Many people are familiar with her fire cracker gelding, Moose, this guy can win a super show and run the fast time of the weekend, all the while giving himself a pat on the back and letting out a couple jumps for joy on the way thru. Tana addresses how she deals with neigh-sayers and the mental aspect of the game. You can find her teaching clinics with her mom and professional barrel racer Dena Millard, riding her horses day in and day out, or at Jones Boys where she can definitely hook you up with a perfectly suited bit ;) !!

Ashley Schafer is no doubt one the worlds most renowned barrel horse and futurity trainers. Not only that but she seems like the most humble human being with horsemanship skills and knowledge galore!!
Ashley grew up riding, roping, and barrel racing, but really zoned in on her career as a barrel and futurity horse training when she started at the Jud Little ranch. We think she just might encourage or inspire you to follow your passions in a similar way ;)
She's since trained some NFR horses we watch today, and competed and won on many in the futurities as well. Can Man ( Freckles Ta Fame) and KR Last Fling ( LTE of around 140k ) were just a couple she mentioned in this convo, and we were soaking up every minute of it! We dove into her training program, prospects, life and much much more!

This cowgirl made the big move from Texas, all the way up to Alberta, to rodeo and pursue the next chapter in life. We chat about the dynamics of this move , and some of her rodeo and life experiences throughout that made it all happen . She has been to the College Finals, Canadian Finals, the Calgary Stampede, American Semis, has won multiple pro rodeos, slot races, and most recently she set an arena record in Rimbey, AB on the stallion, HR Chasin His Memory! Corb Lund is a fellow Albertan who grew up ranching, rodeoing and expressing himself musically. Hes had a very successful music career, going from rock, to the extremely relatable 'Ag-Trag,' or 'Livestock-Rock' genre, as he calls it. Renee Willis has been tearin' up the barrel pen since she was old enough to ride, and even made it to the Canadian Finals Rodeo and the Calgary Stampede by the time she was just 15 & 16 years old!!!
She has been busy raising and training standout barrel horses in Southern BC her whole life, and its not about to slow down any time soon, because Diamond W Barrel Horses are the proud new owners of 'Guys Casanova Cowboy'!!!!
Cowboy has already proven himself as a sire and his offspring have only been in the barrel pen a few years. We talk drills, many aspects of training, competitive & training accomplishments, some funny stories, and much more!
Rylee and Taylor bring along their own horses from start to finish and have clearly dialed in how to do this so successfully, along with the rest of their family. Whether it be in Alberta or Oklahoma, they are always bringing top notch horses to the barrel pens.
Rylee has been a champion since her youth days, she is a 3 x American Qualifier wheres shes placed 10th in the long go, and 11th in the 2nd go! She was most recently, the 2021 Greg Olsen Derby Champ, and she has won many other rodeos and races in Canada!
Taylor has been a FCA season leader and Barrel Racing Champ, a 3x American Qualifier on 2 horses she's trained and even finished top 17 in the final round of the semis one year too! She won the first pro rodeo she took Fury's Princess to , and has had many other race and futurity/Derby wins on this mare that we get to hear about in this podcast!

We talk some of the many career highlights & opportunities that Alley " Raise The Gold Bar," has brought to Helen and her family, along with some other great mares she's had the opportunity to compete on, and now breed.
Helen has many accomplishments in the barrel pen including a couple of very prestigious arena records here in Alberta ( Calnash Arena in Ponoka with a 16.824 on a standard & Thorsby Haymaker Arena with a 14.325). She has also been our Alberta Barrel Racing Association Champ & Reserve Champ, and an LRA, PCRA,CPRA & WPRA money earner or winner. We were honored to talk with her about some of these great horses, runs, and experiences.
We also dive into having a top level breeding operation and how they manage their mares, stallions, ranch, foaling season, breeding season, prospects, and everything in between!

We had the opportunity to sit down with Professional Barrel Racer and PEMF Practitioner Jessa Galloway live at the CBHI!
Jessa starting accumulating achievements on her rodeo resume from a very young age, and offers some great insight for anyone looking to make their way through the High School and College Rodeo circuits. She was the Canadian High School Finals Breakaway Roping Champion in 2011, and was the 2009 Alberta High School Finals Breakaway Champ & the Provincial Barrel Champion. She has since claimed title to South Country Futurity Champion ( in 2012) and the CBHI Open Barrel Championship in 2010. The accomplishments don't stop there- Jessa has multiple WPRA & CPRA placings and wins in the last couple years, and you can bet we will see her back again as soon as things pick up!

In this weeks episode we had the opportunity to chat with Dr Bailee Stanton. We start off the convo learning a little more about Bailees background and how it led her to to where she is today; offering mobile sports medicine services through her practice "Stanton Equine," while being very active & competitive in the barrel racing at the same time. Bailees unique lifestyle and services allow her to be in the midst of the barrel racing action and grow her business at the same time.
One of the main focuses of this phone call/conversation was to dive into the respiratory system of our equine athletes. We talk preventatives, causes, and suspicious hints of respiratory issues. We talk bleeders, pallet issues, environment, equipment used to investigate, preventatives, nebulizers, and the common drugs used to treat- lasix & dex. If you want to be competitive in the game, you should definitely take a listen to Dr Stanton and have a look into the respiratory system of your partner.

Shannon Blakely is an Alberta cowgirl with deep roots in rodeo & agriculture . She is a successful barrel horse trainer and competitor, having started numerous barrel horses that have made amateur finalists and tough open horses.
2016 was a major year in Shannon's life. On the rodeo front, she WON 18 of the 23 rodeos she attended and placed at 3 others ( WOW!!!). She was the WRA Ladies Barrel Racing Champion, the LRA & WRA season leader, and her horse Rowdy was the WRA & LRA season leader ( all with him having on eye!!). Dr Kathleen Crandell attained her M.S in equine nutrition and exercise physiology from Virginia Tech, she then went on to work towards her PHD in equine nutrition and reproduction. Dr Crandell now works at Kentucky Equine Research and provides support for the KER team members with formulation, development, and much much more.
Since we were chatting amidst breeding and foaling season, we wanted to really focus on proper nutrition for mares and foals, however; we tried to cover a few stages of life. We also went into forage, rations, grains, and minerals, just to name a few. We are so thankful Dr Crandell let us pick her brain and we hope to do it again!

Lisa is a successful criminal trial lawyer and business woman,she owns and runs 2 Trach Law offices in Alberta. Not only is she a successful professional, but also a successful barrel racer, with deep roots in Alberta's rodeo and agriculture scene.
In this episode Lisa shares some inside info on our criminal justice system, some entertaining things shes come across in her career, some heart wrenching stories, and very interesting info & clarification on our COVID legislation ( as of early June 2020 that is) and how that might apply to barrel racing events, more specifically.

We took it South of the border again this week to chat with some fellow Alberta Barrel Racers. Sonda Marks is a very accomplished horse trainer and jockey up here in Canada. She has claimed a Lakeland Rodeo Association High-Point Award (2010), A Superstakes Championship(2014), and a Canadian Derby Championship, amongst many other barrel and race track accomplishments.
Codie Lum, barrel racer and trainer, accompanied her South to Arizona this year to learn more tricks of the trade. Listen more to hear about Sonda's program, some of her horses, how the jackpots differ from Canada and the US, and much more of course!
