I heard a man say one time, “I’ve learned so much from my mistakes, I’m thinking of making a few more.” Well, in this episode, Jeremy Honican and I are hanging out with Matt Davis. Matt is pro staff with Raccoon Creek Outfitters, team Nucanoe, and a multi-species angler out of Ohio. We chat it up about some common and some not so common mistakes that us and others have been guilty of doing in the kayak tournament scene.
We shed light on these matters in hopes we can help educate others so that it may never happen to them…. And to also prove a major point: “We are human and mistakes are going to happen, so pick your head up and keep grinding!”

If you fish any bass kayak tourney trail in Kentucky, then you know the name Nick McGuire. Nick is the back to back 2019 and 2020 AOY for the Ky-Yak trail and is currently leading in points for the AOY in both the Ky-Yak and the BKBF trails this year. In this episode Nick includes stories like when he and his buddy were younger, they would spend days out on the water fishing and instead of getting a hotel, they would just sleep on the boat. This kind of hardcore dedication is the reason Nick is the angler he is today. We highlight his success and how he has evolved into one of the most competitive kayak anglers in the state.
It's not often you hook into a fish that reaches record book potential. In fact, most anglers go their whole lives without even coming close to such an achievement. In this episode I am hanging out with Kentucky Fisheries Biologist, David Baker, where we discuss the recent low head dam removal project on Elkhorn Creek at the Jim Beam plant as well as future dam removal projects in the state. Low head dams are being removed all over the country not just due to the dangers they pose to the public, but also to help restore streams to their natural state. We answer questions some may have regarding the removal as well as what anglers can expect to see in that section of creek in the future. These low head dams can be very dangerous and every year we read about people drowing due to the deceptive current these dams produce. Be safe! Wear your PFD!
