Sermons and teachings from Rev. Mark Reynolds, a Pastor in the United Methodist Church (Florida Conference). These transformative messages will speak directly into your life!
They are simple phrases that sound Christian―like something you might find in the Bible. They capture some element of truth but hide or distort others.
Everything happens for a reason.
God helps those who help themselves.
God won’t give you more than you can handle.
God said it, I believe it, that settles it.
Love the sinner, hate the sin.
In this message, we begin a new 5-week series, "Half Truths," where we will examine these common phrases within the context of scripture, starting with "Everything Happens For a Reason."

Jesus calls to love unconditionally even when we disagree politically, but this is too hard without some kind of strategy. After dispelling a few myths that perpetuate division, Pastor Mark points us to Galatians 6 where the Apostle Paul tells us what we need to do to love our political enemies the way that God has loved us in Christ.
This is the second message in a series, "The Mission of the Church in Politically Divisive Times."

As we gear-up for another election year, but before we all lose our minds, Pastor Mark is offering a new two-week message series titled, "The Mission of the Church in Politically Divisive Times." In this first message, "It's Not About Winning," we talk about how partisan politics can co-opt the church, pull it off course, and destroy its unique voice. Fortunately, the Bible offers us a solution. Take a listen to receive wisdom that will help you maintain peace.

Sometimes we hold our religious and moral beliefs so tightly that we cannot imagine the possibility of being wrong. When someone questions these beliefs, we feel compelled to defend them and confuse strength of conviction with dogmatic inflexibility. This stunts our spiritual growth, makes us more judgmental, and damages important relationships. In this message, Pastor Mark gives numerous examples in the New Testament and early church where followers of Jesus could not see the truth because of what they thought they already knew. What is required to get unstuck is humility, which builds a new kind of strength that is gracious, tolerant, responsive, gentle, loving, openminded, and flexible. Empowered in this way, we can consider the possibility that we may be wrong, and when we are admit the mistake and move in a different direction. Like the blind man in Luke 18:35-42, pray, "Lord I want to see!"
This is message 4 of 4 in the Grown-Up Prayers series.

The third petition in the Lord's Prayer, ". . . lead us not into temptation," gets us to reflect on where we are vulnerable to sin, and what we need from God to remain faithful. It also raises the question, who or what are we following? In this message, Pastor Mark talks about the importance of following Jesus if we want protection from temptation and deliverance from evil. Unfortunately, some churches have changed his invitation "Follow me" to "Believe in me," making it possible to call yourself a Christian for believing "the right things" while following yourself, your political party, your bank account, etc. As long as you change your mind you don't need to change your life. But belief without following is a false gospel that will inevitably lead us into temptation and cause us to fall away.

In this message, we continue with the series, "Grown-Up Prayers." In the first message of the series, we learned that prayer is not about looking good in front of others or trying to convince God to give us all the things we want. Rather, prayer is about aligning our will with God's will and assuming a posture of surrender. In this message, we will ask the questions, should I ask God for anything in prayer, and if so, what?

While human beings tend to focus on outward appearances, God focuses on the heart and sees possibilities in us that others miss. God reveals this in the story of David because He wants us to see ourselves and others in the same way. If we can do this, it helps us get clarity about the things that God is calling us to do and prevents us from elevating and emulating the wrong kind of people. Jesus says, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God” (Matthew 5:9). But what does it mean to be a peacemaker? Sometimes we get so focused on large scale problems in pursuit of world peace that we become blind to the small conflicts that erode important relationships in our everyday lives. While big issues are important, our greatest contribution to the mission of Jesus may be in the small peacemaking efforts throughout the normal course of our daily lives. What might this look like for you?

In this message, Pastor Mark talks about his own health journey and then connects it to the theme of worship as spiritual nourishment. As Christians we seek spiritual nourishment from Christ, who gives us the Bread Life through through the ministries of Word and sacrament. As we habituate worship, we are perpetually reminded that our core identity is not that of a consumer but a faithful worshipper of God, someone who sees all of life as a gift. We are also empowered to avoid consuming things that our culture serves-up that are detrimental to our spiritual and emotional health.

When considering the spiritual practice of confession, we often think of unburdening our conscience of "big sins" that we occasionally commit when tempted beyond our limits. But this significantly constrains the transformative power of honestly sharing our brokenness. In contrast, when confession becomes a daily habit, it can reveal places where we need more healing and allow us to receive the gifts of God's grace, including forgiveness, healing, freedom, repentance, restoration, joy, and peace.

In this message, Pastor Mark talks about the offensiveness of the parable of the Good Samaritan. Our culture has domesticated this story by making it about helping strangers in need. Investors tout cryptocurrencies as the currency of the future. But this kind of virtual money follows “the greater fool” theory of investment. They generate no cash flow, so for you to profit, someone else must pay more than you did. Wouldn’t you want to take a deep breath before becoming the next “greater fool” in a long line of fools? This is the same kind of pause that Jesus says is necessary to make wise decisions in all aspects of our financial lives. If we don't pause and apply the teachings of Jesus we risk becoming enslaved by greed, worry, and shortsightedness. Check out this message as we learn how to avoid becoming the greater fool.

Human beings have a handful of primary emotions that shape the quality of their lives, things like fear, anger, guilt, and sadness. Most of these emotions are experienced as negative, but one is positive--JOY! What is the true nature of joy? What prevent us from experiencing it, and what helps us access it?
This new series on JOY! will help us answer these questions and teach us what it means to be truly happy. In this first message, Pastor Mark focuses on the the difference between joy and physical pleasure, as well as the possibility of joy when we suffer.

In this message, Pastor Mark explains how ordinary practices help us to connect with God on a daily basis. We often look for God in the dramatic and spectacular, but more often than not God speaks to us through mundane activities like reading, conversing, singing, giving, and serving. Check out this message to see how God doesn't ask us to do more than we are already doing in our daily routines, but to focus these activities in ways that seek His presence.

When thinking about our happiness, we often focus on mountain top experiences like our wedding day or the birth of a child. However, if we pay attention and have eyes to see, there are more subtle moments that can elicit heart exploding joy.

We tend to think of wisdom as something that accumulates with age, but that’s not always the case. Real wisdom is often the product of hardship. And divine wisdom is lived out on the hard road of obedience to God and in relationship to the community of God’s people. Join us tomorrow as we seek the kind of wisdom that leads to a good life.

The way we talk reveals how committed we are as Christians. Positive, upbuilding talk is a counterweight to the kinds of destructive speech described in the Bible. It's all about how we use the God-given gift of speech as a strong and grateful response to the forgiveness and grace we have received from Jesus Christ. Check out this message as we reflect on words that heal and words that hurt.
Jesus says, "I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry." As we think about what this could possibly mean, we are faced with some important questions. For what do I hunger? Do I hunger for the right things? What do I seek to satisfy my hungers? In this message, we explore these questions, not only as individuals but as a community of faith, which leads to a discussion on what it means to be a real church? This message will both inspire and deeply challenge you.
Wherever Jesus went, says Mark, needy people “begged him that they might touch even the fringe of his cloak; and all who touched it were healed” (6:56). Jesus responds to their needs by showing compassion, which raises some questions: Do we have the compassion of the Christ? Are we willing to “suffer with” the hurting people around us? Can we be like the cloak of Jesus today? Check out this message as we explore this important topic.
Given our current context and the daily challenges we all face, it is often difficult to feel blessed. Life for Christians of the early church was no picnic, either. So why is the apostle Paul so ecstatic about how blessed he is? Why is so intentional about cultivating gratitude? Does Paul know something we don’t? Check out this message to find out.
Since this past Sunday was July 4th, it was a great time to reflect on freedom. Most people think of freedom as the liberty to do whatever they want as long as it doesn't hurt someone else. But the Bible says that this understanding actually leads to more slavery and redefines freedom in a way that really sets us free!
A recent survey of people with investable assets exceeding a million dollars reveals that many of these people do not think of themselves as rich. What has to happen before people think they're rich? The Bible talks about Jesus being rich, but becoming poor. It also talks about those who no doubt were already relatively poor, digging deep to help others in more dire circumstances. What lesson can we learn from this?
What do you do when the giants keep coming? In this message, we look at the story of David and Goliath to learn how to better fight our fiercest battles.
Transitions create "in-between" time, when we feel forced to let go of the past before there's anything firm to grab hold of in the future. It can feel like we are leaping into a void, which is a scary and confusing experience. The Apostle Paul knew this well, and he helps us to understand that the choices we make "in the meantime" make all the difference in the world. Check out this message to gain wisdom on how to faithfully navigate your in-between time.
The insanity defense gets a lot of publicity. It is rarely used and with mixed results. We bring this up because in Mark 3 Jesus is accused of being crazy. We want to know why such a charge would be made, and whether there's some sense in which the church needs to get a little crazy to fulfill its mission.
When we are awestruck, we should consider what God may be saying to us through that emotion … and be aware that a paradigm shift may be coming in our life. In this message, Pastor Mark talks about topics as diverse as scientific revolutions, Pink Floyd, mysticism, and flying to El Salvador for surf trips.
This Pentecost message focuses on how the Holy Spirit continues to fill us with the power of God and challenges us to share that divine energy with others.
In this message, we reflect on the meaning of Jesus' ascension and how it leads to a new adventure for those who follow him.
We all struggle, and sometimes these struggles wear us down until we think, "I just can't do it anymore." In this message we see how hope can transform how we think about our struggles, giving us the courage and strength to keep pressing forward. If you are feeling discouraged in some way, you don't want to miss it!
"Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me." Check out this messages as we start in Death Valley, California to gain some new perspective on this old passage of scripture.

First-century Christians of Jerusalem worked together to help those in need. “There was not a needy person among them,” because they distributed aid “to each as any had need” (vv. 34-35). We don’t have to dwell on doom and gloom. What would happen if we stopped focusing on what's going wrong and started paying attention to what is going right? What would happen if we stopped looking for threats and started noticing possibilities? In this message, we see how Jesus not only rolled the stone away from the tomb that first Easter morning, but how he continues to remove obstacles today so that we can move forward in healthy and productive ways.
Intelligence, cooperation, and nobility. Those are the characteristics of the donkey that carried Jesus into Jerusalem. And they serve as an example of the qualities Christians should strive for as they carry Jesus forward in what they think, do, and say.
There's something about Jesus . . . he's a magnetic spiritual figure who either attracts or repels depending on the orientation of our hearts. Check out this message as we explore how our response to his pull shapes the trajectory of our lives.
In this message, Pastor Mark talks about how we are made right with God. Looking at Paul's letter to the Romans, we will see how righteousness does not come through moral perfection but by our faith in Jesus Christ. Tune in to see how this revolutionary idea changed everything in the history of religion.
The year 2020 was a banner year for bad news and left many with “news fatigue” or anxiety regarding circumstances and events about which they can do nothing. However, the people of God are “good news” people, and through the prophet Isaiah, God reminds us that no matter how bad the news seems to be, God is still at work. Check out this message as we talk about the cure for news fatigue.
A good disciple is one who seeks connections with people who do not share their race, religion, political party or ideology. Jesus did not begin his ministry by talking only with like-minded Galileans. Instead, he and his disciples made sacrifices and faced hardships to do the work of helping, healing, teaching and preaching. When Jesus call us to follow him, we must leave some things behind. What do you need to leave behind to walk into the fullness of life that God offers? Check out this message as we reflect on this question.
When buying a car, we want a test drive. When buying a house, we want to walk through all the rooms. When buying a new pair of jeans, we want to try them on. In other words, we want to try it before we buy it. Likewise, when Jesus invites us to become a disciple, he uses the same approach. He says, "Come and see" : Come and see who I am and what I am about. Try out this way of life and see what happens. There is no high-pressure sales pitch, just an open invitation. Check out this message as we see how this approach creates safety and breathing room for us as we decide the kind of life we want to live.
Words have power. They have the power to inspire hope or plunge us into despair. They have the power to incite violence or bring peace. They have the power to set us free with the truth or enslave us with lies. They have the power to shape how we think about ourselves, others, and the world in which we live. In this message, Pastor Mark talks about how to use our words in ways that honor God and bless others.
In this message we talk about what it means to go home, and how God makes a home FOR us by making His home WITH us. At the end, Pastor Mark leads those interested in a prayer to become a follower of Jesus or to rededicate their lives to Christ at the beginning of a new year.
In this message, we focus on the song of Mary to see how God heals our spiritual blindness and helps us receive the life-changing gifts of Jesus.
Sixty-five years ago a religious book was published that changed the conversation about God and what it means to be a Christian. It was C.S. Lewis' "Mere Christianity." It became a classic because it focused on timeless truths of Christianity rather than the latest theological or cultural fashions. In a similar way, the apostle Paul suggests that there are a few basic things that are common to all Christians. In this message we will explore how focusing on these can strengthen our spiritual lives.
Howard Thurman once said, "Where there is no dream, life becomes a swamp, a dreary dead place, and, deep within, a [person’s] heart begins to rot." This Sunday, we reflect on the importance of dreams to give us hope. Drawing on the Prophet Isaiah, John the Baptist, Martin Luther King Jr., and Howard Thurman we will discover resources to dream the world better!
During the COVID19 pandemic, especially as we enter the holidays, many people are feeling isolated and alone. We want to visit with family and friends, to give them a big hug, sit with them in the same room, and be together in-person. We want to get back to normal. In this message, Pastor Mark explains that the book of Isaiah, which is about Israel in exile, shares a similar emotional, psychological, and spiritual context. They too wanted things to get back to normal and to have their relationships restored. More than anything, they wanted to reconnect with God. In all of this, Isaiah prays to God, "O that you would tear open the heavens and come down” (64:1), and then casts a vision of restoration, a vision that points beyond itself to something bigger--Emmanuel, God with us.
How do we distinguish between good leaders and bad leaders at every level? What kind of leaders should we trust and support, and what kind of leaders should we distrust and disempower. Different groups have developed different tests and standards, but if you are a Christian, it's really not up to you. God sets the standard in scripture and then holds us accountable accordingly, not only as individuals but also as a nation. Check out this message as we reflect on the marks of a good leader and how nations are judged by how they treat the most vulnerable members of society.
Roger Waters', "The Wall." NASA. Psychology. Check out this message to discover how these things come together to help us better understand what it means to live a life pleasing to God.
In this message, Pastor Mark reminds us that Jesus' mission and ministry is all about love, and if we miss this we miss everything.
In Matthew 22:21 Jesus says, "Give to the emperor what belongs to the emperor, and to God what belongs to God." Many people assume that this saying is about the separation of church and state, but this misses the larger point that Jesus is trying to make about idolatry in the economy. Check out this message for an interpretation that will forever change the way you see this passage and relate to money.
Human beings have an incredible capacity for self-deception, and this often leads us to make excuses and blame others for bad behavior. We give ourselves permission to sin. Since this is driven by moral blind spots, we need others to help us change--we need friends to keep us honest and community to hold us accountable. Check out this message to see how God uses friends to help us escape moral self-justification.
The 5th Commandment tells us to honor our father and mother, but what does this mean? Some parents misuse this Bible verse to maintain control over their adult children, holding them emotionally hostage by their approval or disapproval. One thing that encourages this distortion is that we project an idealized vision of the nuclear family onto scripture. But the idea that a family is limited to a husband, a wife, and their children would have been foreign to the biblical authors. However, when we understand how families were defined in the ancient world, some new insights emerge about how different generations of people should relate to each other. Check out this message to see how.
As the 2020 presidential election quickly approaches and we continue to wrestle with huge problems like COVID-19 and various natural disasters, many of us feel overwhelmed. How do we deal with all the fear, uncertainty, anger, and suffering? While there is no easy answer to this question, surely we all need a big shot of courage. What is courage? What does it look like when Christians act courageously? Whether we are dealing with a family issue, trying to make good decisions at work, or voting on November 3rd, it will be difficult to honor God without courage. Check out this message as we seek God's will and ask for the courage to carry it out!
The apostle Paul was not afraid of death and shows us how God brings new life during times of sacrifice and suffering. In this message we see how endings can strengthen our faith and bring us closer to God.
Some religious people spiritualize everything. The transformation they seek involves escaping all the trappings of our bodies in pursuit of a purely spiritual realm. But this is contrary to the teachings of the Bible where God creates our bodies, calls them good, and shows us that life in a body is constitutive of what it means to be a human being. There is no experience of God, no salvation, no transformation for human beings that's not mediated through a physical body. In this message, Pastor Mark walks us through Romans 12:1-8 to explain how real transformation and spiritual growth requires the full participation of our bodies. God calls us to be all in, not only in mind and spirit, but also in body!
There are plenty of bad things that we would like to go back in time and change — in world history and in our own personal histories. But God can transform those bad things into good. He did it with Joseph and his brothers. He did it with Jesus on the cross. He did it with Paul, who moved from a persecutor to an apostle. In this message we focus on accepting the past and trusting God to transform our future!
Often, when we think about how God works in the world, we gravitate toward the spectacular and miraculous. But this can prevent us from seeing how God is constantly at work in everyday happenings. In this message, Pastor Mark challenges us to be more attentive to God's more subtle activity all around us.

Every day, somewhere, something happens that warrants an immediate response in the media. Programming stops or a news flash runs across the bottom of our screens that breaks an important announcement. In this message we see how Jesus had world-shattering news to share too, but unlike much breaking news today, his message was exceedingly good!
Have you ever experienced the pain of being unfinished? You are grateful for all the ways God has changed you, but your spirit groans for something more: more healing, more freedom, more peace, more joy. A longing that is intensified by the realization that you continue to struggle with old thoughts, feelings, and patterns that hold you back. Living between what God has already done and what God has yet to do can be challenging. How do we persevere without getting defeated or discouraged? How do we move through the pain in ways that lead to greater joy? Check out this message for inspiration and hope.

Jesus says in Matthew 10: "Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; and one’s foes will be members of one’s own household." Does Jesus condone violence? Does he encourage conflict in the family? Or is there something else going on here? Check out this message to find out.
In this message, we reflect on the question: What is compassion? Looking at the way this word is used in the New Testament to describe Jesus, we learn that compassion always generates actions that serve a twofold purpose in life.
In this message, we explore how every human being is created in the image of God, how all people are of sacred worth and given a divine calling by their Creator. When we oppress or abuse others, we deny and deface that image, which is sinful in the eyes of God and rouses cries for justice. Against this backdrop, Pastor Mark addresses the killing of George Floyd and the protests that have emerged in its wake. In this moment, God calls Christians to stand together with the oppressed against all forms of racism and injustice.
The early Christians were part of a resistance movement that opposed the value system of the Roman Empire.Taking a stand for what was right in the face of hostility got them in trouble and led to various kinds of suffering. In this message, we reflect on how they understood this suffering in a way that kept them faithful and moving forward. Check it out and learn how to join the resistance!
How do we stay connected when we can't physically be together? Jesus helps us answer this question in his farewell conversation with his disciples, and it has something to do with an advocate. Check out this message to discover how unity is a gift we receive in obedient action!
"I'm sending thoughts and prayers." When people hear these words, they have different reactions. Some feel comforted and encouraged, and others feel irritated or angry. Why? Well, it has something to do with how we understand prayer. In this message, we explore how prayer works by focusing on Psalm 31 and the Serenity Prayer.
The 23rd Psalm is a familiar Bible passage that most people don't believe. We say that God provides for us and protects us, but live as if God were absent, like we are left all alone to fend for ourselves in a hostile world. We create our own hell and then use the 23rd Psalm to help us survive the day. But what if God is trying to do something different in this passage? What if the 23rd Psalm discloses reality as God intends and invites us to leave our distortions so we can live in a whole new world.
In this message, Pastor Mark draws on Acts 2 to describe what a real Christian church looks like!
Bill Gates and microchips. Elvis sightings. Roswell. 9/11. People love a good conspiracy theory, and although the internet is an unfiltered clearinghouse for wacky ideas and misinformation, conspiracy theories are nothing new. In this message, Pastor Mark talks about how conspiracy theories developed around the resurrection of Jesus and why the claim, "Christ is risen!" has persisted for over 2,000 years.
Focusing on the story of Judas, Pastor Mark shows how guilt gets converted to shame and creates a compulsion to control, which functions to intensify our emotional and spiritual pain. The only way out of this trap is forgiveness, but we don't go to God for forgiveness unless we know that God loves us unconditionally.
In this message, Pastor Mark teaches six steps for praying in times of crisis, looking specifically at Daniel 9.
Join Pastor Mark for online worship at First UMC Cocoa Beach. His message is about moving from fear to faith in the COVID-19 pandemic and creating adaptive change to meet the new challenges facing the church.
In this short message, Pastor Mark explains that this is not a time to isolate, hoard our resources, and look out for number one. Rather, it's a time to show the world what a Christian looks like. We cannot sit back and count the days until we can do church the way we've always done it, but are called to step out and serve now--to lead now--given all the needs right in front of us. Let's rethink how we do church and get to work finding new ways to accomplish the mission of Jesus!
Pastor Mark offers words of encouragement regarding the COVID19 pandemic and explains what is happening at First UMC Cocoa Beach to stay connected in ministry with each other and to our community.
Do you ever struggle with recurring issues that prevent you from moving forward in life? Whether it's an addiction or a self-destructive thought pattern, most people wrestle with some kind of entrenched brokenness that creates unusually strong temptations. When trying to understand these areas of life, the analogy of a slippery slope can be helpful. Since everyone has different vulnerabilities, how do we identify these slippery slopes? How do we install moral guardrails to keep us from going over the edge? Check out this message as we explore this topic and seek solutions.
New studies show that intermittent fasting can bring significant health benefits. But as people get more interested in fasting for health reasons, interest in fasting for spiritual reasons continues to decline. Indeed, fasting is perhaps the most misunderstood and underused spiritual discipline that God gives to us. One reason is because we too often disconnect fasting from the practice of social justice. The prophets (and Jesus) help us understand that when we divorce the two we rob fasting of its divine purpose and make it a self-serving exercise that breeds self-righteousness. Check out this message as we seek to better understand the principles behind fasting and how to practice them in our everyday lives.
One of the most challenging things in the spiritual life is finding a way to listen to God. How do you hear God's voice? How do you distinguish between God's voice and your own thoughts? Check out this message as we gain tools for discernment.
Have you ever met an adult who acts like a child?Just because someone grows up physically does not mean that they grow up emotionally, and the same is true of the spiritual life. Some people become Christians but fail to do the work necessary to mature in their faith. But God calls us to grow up! Check out this message where Pastor Mark distinguishes between immature and mature faith.
Jesus says in Matthew 7: "Do not judge, or you too will be judged." But what exactly does he mean by this? Do these verses mean that we cannot make moral judgments? Call out wrongdoing? Encourage people to make amends when they injure others? Change their moral behavior? And how does all of this connect with God's love and forgiveness? Does forgiveness preclude accountability? Check out this message as we reflect on the difference between judgmentalism and speaking the truth in love.
There is disagreement in the Christian church on issues related to human sexuality. In this message, Pastor Mark talks about how these disagreements are rooted in different ways of interpreting a handful of passages in the Bible. Regardless of where you come down on these issues, it is clear that hatred is not a Christian virtue and God calls us to love everyone, including those in the LGBTQ community and those who interpret the Bible differently than we do. Check out this message to see how.
Some churches overemphasize personal morality and underemphasize social justice. They talk much about drinking, smoking, and cussing, but say very little about poverty, the environment, race relations, war and peace, healthcare, immigration, fair wages, prisons, and hunger. But this lopsided view of Christianity does not do justice to the Bible, especially the teachings of Jesus and the prophets, and is easily co-opted by ideologues to do their political bidding. In truth, God cares about personal morality AND social justice, and so should we.

In this message, Pastor Mark raises a important question: What does it mean to say that the Bible is inspired? After surveying a few different answers, he explains that one can be a faithful Christian and not read everything in the Bible literally.
n this message, Pastor Mark reflects on the connection between our thoughts and feelings and how our decision to either focus on the negative or the positive produces more of the same. If you want to escape "stinkin thinkin" you have to learn to shift your focus in real time.
In this message, Pastor Mark focuses on Isaiah 1:2-20 to explain how God rejects our religiosity unless our personal piety is connected to social justice. God calls us "seek justice, rescue the oppressed, defend the orphan, and plead the cause of the widow." This means going beyond the requirements of personal morality and fighting against institutionalized evil. It means choosing the side of the poor, the oppressed, and the marginalized, advocating for them, and fighting for fair and equal treatment. It means embracing the sacred worth of all people. Anything short of this makes our worship an abomination to God.
