There’s a lot in the Bible, and it can feel a bit daunting for those unfamiliar with the overarching story to start reading. Where do we start? What are some important passages?

Throughout this series, we’ll explore passages that have long been considered to be some of the most important formational texts in scripture. These are some of the passages that we should hold close to our hearts and even take the time to memorize in our lifetimes.

Welcome to New Hope! We're glad to have you join us this morning. In this sermons series, 10 Questions: Exploring Barriers to Faith, we will explore some of the questions that keep many people from ever considering the way of Jesus. When we engage with these questions we also equip people who are questioning their faith with new perspective for the journey ahead. And wrestling with these questions will enable followers of Jesus “to give a reason for the hope that is in us.” (1 Peter 3:15)

This week we are exploring the question "Can We Take the Bible Seriously?"

Welcome to New Hope Church’s teaching series podcast.

We’re in the second week of our series Luke’s Gospel: The Great reversal. We will journey to Easter by exploring Jesus through the eyes of Luke. Luke presents Jesus as someone who turns everything and everyone upside-down and inside-down. We cannot encounter Jesus and stay the same. Pastor John Rosensteel will lead this morning's teaching and our scripture reading is Luke 1:26-38.

I’d like to take a moment to share a quick note about our annual Advent Offering that you, New Hope’s congregation, contributed to in December 2021. Our goal was to raise $24,000 to be used to support the caregivers in our local community. Unsurprisingly, you all stepped up to the challenge, but you took it even further. You generously gave $32,000 to New Hope’s initiative, that’s $8,000 more dollars than we could have dreamed of sharing. We the staff are honored by the generosity that you continue to show, and that goes beyond just financial generosity. From all of us and from the recipients of your donations, thank you! You made a difference in the lives of many.

We cherish this time of year where the church across the globe anticipates celebrating the birth of Christ. Advent creates space within the hustle and bustle of the holiday season to reflect on the grace and miracle of Jesus’ birth, and connect with what it means for us today.

Following a shorter teaching from Pastor John Rosensteel, you’ll have the opportunity to participate in guided prayer lead by our Prayer Pastor in Residence, Jess Anders. I’ll be reading prompts to guide you through 10-minutes of reflection.

In the final week of our teaching series The Good Life, Pastor John Rosensteel will be exploring how the gospel relates to death. We want to take a moment to recognize that this topic may be hitting some sensitive spaces in your heart and mind. If you need help, know that you are not alone. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is a hotline for individuals in crisis. To speak with a certified listener, call tel:1-800-273-8255

Death is not what God intended for us. Death makes God angry because death is an enemy. But early on in our story we also understand that death might be friendly. God intended humanity to die so that they could be raised to life forever breaking the power of sin and death. Our scripture reading for the day is Philippians 1:18-24.

Next Sunday marks the start of the Advent season. This year we have some special opportunities to "Look to Jesus" together through what we’re calling “Experiential Sundays”: Each Sunday we will explore a different aspect of Jesus as expressed in the book of Isaiah by singing together, engaging with a teaching, and practicing communion. There will be some different elements too. Visit www.newhopepdx.org/advent to learn more.

The ancient and modern lie is that we are our own, we belong to ourselves. That is where we are meant to find comfort. The truth is the gospel unites us with Jesus. We belong to Him. And this isn’t some subjective belonging that comes and goes, it is objective belonging; rooted in the work of Jesus.

We're in the sixth week of The Good Life teaching series. Our lessons have been exploring how the good news of Jesus intersects with every aspect of our lives. Our scripture reading for the day is 1 Corinthians 6:12-20

What do you think about the division that shows up in your daily life? Where do you see division cropping up? Is it in your home, your neighborhood, or at work? Or is it on tv, in the news or on your Facebook timeline? Division has never been more popular. Social media purposely stokes division for profit. They have realized the best currency is outrage and anger. You might be thinking, "is there any hope for unity?" The answer is unequivocally yes, and we'll find an explanation in the gospel.

We're in our 4th week of The Good Life teaching series. Our lessons have been exploring how the good news of Jesus intersects with every aspect of our lives. Our scripture reading for the day is 1 Corinthians 1:10-17.

Welcome to New Hope! When you think of the good life, what comes to your mind? Cars, mansions, extravagant meals, maybe? While there's nothing wrong with any of these things, they do not define the good life. Today, Pastor John Rosensteel will be teaching us how the gospel shows us how money can be used to lead us to the good life.

This is third week of our teaching series, The Good Life, exploring how the Good News of Jesus intersects with every aspect of our lives. This is part two of our combined 12-week series focused on the gospel. Our scripture reading for the day is Timothy 6:17-19.

There are many different perspectives about Jesus and many of them are misleading caricatures. Who is the real Jesus? We can discover who Jesus is through the testimony of someone who knew Him and was loved by Him. Jesus can only be truly seen through a kaleidoscope of images. He's not who we think he is - He's so much more. May we know Him, and may we find life as we follow Him.

In his letter to a small group of Jesus followers in Philippi, Paul calls them to live as citizens of the new kingdom, proclaiming the Gospel in word and deed. When we stand firm in the faith, together against evil, we will experience abundant life.
