Conference 8 – Hope in Difficult Times: with Sts. Therese, Louis, and Zelie and Their Family with Fr. Timothy Gallagher O.M.V.Fr. Timothy Gallagher recounts St. Thérèse of Lisieux’s compassionate outreach to Sister Maria of St. Joseph, a troubled nun often avoided by her community due to severe mood swings and emotional instability. Instead of joining in the avoidance, Thérèse intentionally sought her out, offering to assist in the linen room and patiently enduring her anger, all as a way of living her “casting flowers” spirituality—small acts of love and sacrifice offered to Jesus, who transforms them into blessings for the whole Church. While her words to the sister may sound poetic, Fr. Gallagher explains that beneath the tender imagery lies a steely, deliberate charity rooted in perseverance, humility, and the conviction that every small offering—especially in difficult relationships—has immense spiritual value when united to Christ.

Fr. Gallagher also reflects on Thérèse’s own explanation of “casting flowers” from Story of a Soul: never letting a single opportunity for love pass by, whether in smiles, patient endurance, or unnoticed sacrifices, and trusting Jesus to use them for the good of souls in purgatory and the Church on earth. The episode concludes with letters from Thérèse’s sister Léonie, showing how the Little Way shaped her own life. By the time of her final profession and even five weeks before her death, Léonie radiated the same trust, gratitude, and spiritual confidence, fully convinced that her littleness would lead her straight into the arms of Jesus.

Discerning Hearts Reflection Questions1. How can I respond with intentional love to those in my life who are difficult to be around? 2. When have I missed opportunities to offer small acts of kindness, and how can I be more attentive to them? 3. Do I truly believe that my smallest sacrifices, united to Jesus, have value for the whole Church? 4. In what ways am I tempted to avoid people who are isolated or struggling, and how might God be calling me to draw closer? 5. How do I practice perseverance in love when my efforts are met with ingratitude or rejection? 6. Can I see my own “littleness” as a path to greater trust in God, as Thérèse and Léonie did? 7. What “flowers” — daily acts of love — can I consciously offer to Jesus this week?

Conference 7 – Hope in Difficult Times: with Sts. Therese, Louis, and Zelie and Their Family with Fr. Timothy Gallagher O.M.V.Fr. Timothy Gallagher reflects on the pivotal transformation in Léonie Martin’s life, one of St. Thérèse’s sisters. He recounts the painful history between Léonie and the family maid, Louise, who secretly mistreated her for years under the guise of discipline. Despite outward appearances of affection, Marie, Léonie’s older sister, discerned something amiss. After the death of their aunt, Marie bravely revealed her concerns to their mother, Zélie, who took immediate action, forbidding Louise from interacting with Léonie and arranging her eventual dismissal. This intervention opened Léonie’s heart for the first time to true maternal love and marked the beginning of her interior healing. Though her path remained marked by trials, including repeated failed attempts to enter religious life, this moment was a decisive turning point.

The second half of the talk centers on the deep spiritual bond between Thérèse and her aunt, Celine, who had stepped in as a maternal figure after Zélie’s death. Fr. Gallagher reads a letter from Thérèse to her aunt on her feast day, expressing profound gratitude and love, and a moving response from Celine. Through these letters, listeners glimpse the loving sensitivity of Thérèse’s heart and the Martin family’s ethos of grace, forgiveness, and deep familial affection. Fr. Gallagher beautifully illustrates how love—especially when rooted in Christ—has the power to heal, restore, and elevate even the most wounded of hearts.

Discerning Hearts Reflection Questions1. How can I become more attentive to hidden suffering in those around me, as Marie was with Léonie? 2. In what ways do I respond when others dismiss or overlook someone’s pain? 3. Do I trust that God’s grace can bring transformation even after years of struggle? 4. How do I practice forgiveness toward those who have hurt me deeply, as Léonie eventually did? 5. When have I mistaken control or harshness for love in my own relationships? 6. Do I pray for those I struggle to understand or help, as Zélie did for her daughter? 7. How does my love for God overflow into love for family and others, like it did for Thérèse? 8. Who has been a spiritual mother or father to me, and have I expressed gratitude to them? 9. Do I believe that God can work healing even through my weakest and most painful moments? 10. How can I imitate the Martin family’s trust in God during trials, especially in my own home?

Episode 1 – Introduction – St. Thérèse and Marie: A Story of Two Cousins with Fr. Timothy Gallagher – Discerning Hearts PodcastFr. Timothy Gallagher and Kris McGregor begin a discussion on the often overlooked relationships that shaped the life and spirituality of St. Thérèse of Lisieux. Reflecting on the profound and enduring influence of Thérèse’s extended family, Fr. Gallagher takes a special focus on her cousin Marie Guérin, who was both a close friend and spiritual companion to Thérèse.

St. Thérèse of LisieuxThese familial bonds provided a strong foundation of faith and support, with the Guérin and Martin families deeply intertwined in both everyday life and spiritual formation. Marie Guérin, being Thérèse’s first cousin, shared a unique bond with her, spending much time together during their childhood and later entering the Carmel, where she became a novice under Thérèse’s guidance.

The spirituality within this extended family was significantly influenced by the teachings of St. Francis de Sales and St. Jane de Chantal; through the visitation tradition embodied by Thérèse’s aunt, Sister Marie-Dosithée. This spiritual legacy, combined with the close-knit relationships and mutual support among family members, played a crucial role in the development of Thérèse’s own spirituality, which is characterized by its simplicity and deep love.

Fr. Gallagher also touches on the remarkable influence of Isidore and Céline Guérin, Marie’s parents, who were instrumental in supporting the Martin family after the death of Thérèse’s mother, Zélie, and during the later years of Louis Martin’s declining health. Their example of faith and charity profoundly impacted their children, particularly Marie, who carried forward the spiritual legacy of her family into her religious life.

Discerning Hearts Reflection Questions1. Understanding Therese’s Legacy: How does St. Thérèse of Lisieux’s enduring influence challenge your understanding of spiritual depth and holiness? 2. The Role of Family in Faith: In what ways can your family life foster spiritual growth, similar to the Martin and Guérin families? 3. Value of Spiritual Friendship: How do your friendships reflect the spiritual bond and mutual support seen between Thérèse and her cousin Marie? 4. Witnessing through Suffering: What can you learn from Marie’s compassionate care for Thérèse during her final illness about offering spiritual and physical support to others? 6. Everyday Holiness: How does the idea of sanctity in daily life, as practiced by Thérèse, inspire you to seek holiness in your ordinary activities? 7. Spiritual Legacy of Extended Family: Reflect on how staying close with extended family, as modeled by the Martins and Guérins, could enhance your spiritual journey.

Episodio 5 – La Tercera Regla – Consolación espiritualLa Tercera Regla:

Echoes of Eucatastrophe: Unveiling Spiritual Truths – A “Lord of the Rings” Spiritual Retreat with Fr. Timothy Gallagher – Discerning Hearts PodcastIn the final episode of “A Lord of the Rings Spiritual Retreat,” Father Timothy Gallagher concludes his profound exploration of J.R.R. Tolkien’s “On Fairy-Stories.” Here, he emphasizes how fairy tales transcend age, captivating both children and adults with their enchanting narratives that delve into universal themes of joy, sorrow, and the perennial battle between good and evil.

Father Gallagher meticulously dissects Tolkien’s notion of ‘eucatastrophe,’ a term coined to describe a sudden, redemptive turn of events in a story, effectively tying it to the Christian ethos of salvation and redemption. He presents Tolkien’s fantasy world as a reflective mirror of our reality – a world where hope and joy triumph in the face of despair, underscored by God’s redemptive grace.

This final episode also highlights other literary giants like George MacDonald and C.S. Lewis, who, akin to Tolkien, utilize fantasy as a medium to convey profound spiritual truths. Gallagher encourages listeners to delve into these narratives, offering insights into the workings of grace in both our personal spiritual journeys and the wider world.

As the retreat draws to a close, Father Gallagher invites listeners to perceive Tolkien’s work as a metaphor for our spiritual journey. The experiences of the characters in “The Lord of the Rings,” particularly their encounters with eucatastrophe, mirror our own life experiences where hope and redemption are possible amidst tribulation and adversity.

Discerning Hearts Reflection Questions:

  1. Eucatastrophe and Personal Faith: Reflect on a moment in your life that felt like a ‘eucatastrophe’ – a sudden turn from despair to hope. How did this experience strengthen or challenge your faith?
  2. Fairy Stories and Spiritual Truths: How do fairy stories or fantasy literature, like Tolkien’s works, help you understand or relate to spiritual truths in your own life? Can you identify any specific instances where such a story mirrored your spiritual journey?
  3. The Battle Between Good and Evil: In what ways do you experience the battle between good and evil in your daily life? How do you find strength and guidance in your Catholic faith to navigate this battle?
  4. Grace in Trials and Tribulations: Consider a difficult period in your life. How did you experience God’s grace during this time? Did this period bring any insights or deepened understanding of God’s plan for you?
  5. Joy and Sorrow in Faith: Reflect on how joy and sorrow coexist in your spiritual life. How do these emotions bring depth to your understanding and experience of faith?
  6. Christian Redemption and Personal Salvation: How do you relate the Christian concept of redemption and salvation to your personal life? Are there aspects of your life where you’ve felt particularly redeemed or called to a deeper understanding of salvation?
  7. Hope in a Fallen World: In the face of global or personal challenges, how does your faith sustain your hope? What role does prayer, the sacraments, and community play in maintaining this hope?
  8. Spiritual Growth Through Literature: How has engaging with spiritually-themed literature, like Tolkien’s works, contributed to your spiritual growth or understanding of your faith?
  9. Tolkien’s Vision and Christian Living: How can J.R.R. Tolkien’s vision of a world filled with hope, courage, and redemption inspire your everyday Christian living?
  10. The Call to Spiritual Adventure: In what ways are you being called to a ‘spiritual adventure’ in your life right now? How does this call align with your understanding of God’s purpose for you?

I PROPOSE to speak about fairy-stories, though I am aware that this is a rash adventure. Faerie is a perilous land, and in it are pitfalls for the unwary and dungeons for the overbold. And overbold I may be accounted, for though I have been a lover of fairy-stories since I learned to read, and have at times thought about them, I have not studied them professionally. I have been hardly more than a wandering explorer (or trespasser) in the land, full of wonder but not of information.

The realm of fairy-story is wide and deep and high and filled with many things: all manner of beasts and birds are found there; shoreless seas and stars uncounted; beauty that is an enchantment, and an ever-present peril; both joy and sorrow as sharp as swords. In that realm a man may, perhaps, count himself fortunate to have wandered, but its very richness and strangeness tie the tongue of a traveller who would report them. And while he is there it is dangerous for him to ask too many questions, lest the gates should be shut and the keys be lost.

In this episode, Fr. Gallagher discusses “eucatastrophe.” J. R. R. Tolkien defined this term in his lecture “On Fairy-Stories,” as a “good catastrophe, the sudden joyous ‘turn’…it is a sudden and miraculous grace…a fleeting glimpse of Joy” (On Fairy-Stories 153) Going further, it is a moment experienced in the Gospel, referencing the greatest moment of eucatastrophe in human history: the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ (On Fairy-Stories 156). When understood through the mechanism of eucatastrophe “The Lord of the Rings” becomes a “fundamentally religious and Catholic work” (Letter 142).

Father Gallagher’s reflections extend to the joy of heaven as imagined in literature, drawing parallels between Tolkien’s fictional world and Christian eschatology. He concludes with a focus on the joys of home and family, as seen in Tolkien’s works, emphasizing their importance in both the spiritual and earthly realms.

Discerning Hearts Reflection Questions:

  2. Joy from Sorrow: How do you comprehend the Christian concept of finding joy in sorrow, as seen from Good Friday to Easter Sunday? Have you experienced such a transformation in your life?

  4. Stories Shaping Faith: Think of a story, biblical or literary, that profoundly influenced your spiritual journey. What lesson did you take from it?
  5. Heavenly Joy in Daily Life: Can you identify moments in your life that seemed like a glimpse of heavenly joy? How do these moments influence your perspective on spirituality?
  6. Home and Family as Spiritual Foundations: How do your family and home life reflect Christian virtues like love and sacrifice? What steps can you take to strengthen these virtues?
  7. Learning from Fictional Characters: Which character in “The Lord of the Rings” resonates with you spiritually, and what lessons can you draw from their journey?

Full memory flooded back, and Sam cried aloud: ‘It wasn’t a dream! Then where are we?’ And a voice spoke softly behind him: ‘In the land of Ithilien, and in the keeping of the King; and he awaits you.’ With that Gandalf stood before him, robed in white, his beard now gleaming like pure snow in the twinkling of the leafy sunlight. ‘Well, Master Samwise, how do you feel?’ he said. But Sam lay back, and stared with open mouth, and for a moment, between bewilderment and great joy, he could not answer. At last he gasped:

‘Gandalf! I thought you were dead! But then I thought I was dead myself. Is everything sad going to come untrue? What’s happened to the world?’ ‘

A great Shadow has departed,’ said Gandalf, and then he laughed, and the sound was like music, or like water in a parched land; and as he listened the thought came to Sam that he had not heard laughter, the pure sound of merriment, for days upon days without count. It fell upon his ears like the echo of all the joys he had ever known. But he himself burst into tears. Then, as a sweet rain will pass down a wind of spring and the sun will shine out the clearer, his tears ceased, and his laughter welled up, and laughing he sprang from his bed. ‘How do I feel?’ he cried. ‘Well, I don’t know how to say it. I feel, I feel’ – he waved his arms in the air – ‘I feel like spring after winter, and sun on the leaves; and like trumpets and harps and all the songs I have ever heard!’

Tolkien, J.R.R.. The Return of the King: Being the Third Part of the Lord of the Rings (Kindle Locations 4133-4140). Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. Kindle Edition.

Frodo ran to meet him, and Sam followed close behind. ‘Well, if this isn’t the crown of all!’ he said. ‘Strider, or I’m still asleep!’

‘Yes, Sam, Strider,’ said Aragorn. ‘It is a long way, is it not, from Bree, where you did not like the look of me? A long way for us all, but yours has been the darkest road.’

And then to Sam’s surprise and utter confusion he bowed his knee before them; and taking them by the hand, Frodo upon his right and Sam upon his left, he led them to the throne, and setting them upon it, he turned to the men and captains who stood by and spoke, so that his voice rang over all the host, crying:

‘Praise them with great praise!’

And when the glad shout had swelled up and died away again, to Sam’s final and complete satisfaction and pure joy, a minstrel of Gondor stood forth, and knelt, and begged leave to sing. And behold! he said:

‘Lo! lords and knights and men of valour unashamed, kings and princes, and fair people of Gondor, and Riders of Rohan, and ye sons of Elrond, and Dúnedain of the North, and Elf and Dwarf, and greathearts of the Shire, and all free folk of the West, now listen to my lay. For I will sing to you of Frodo of the Nine Fingers and the Ring of Doom.’ And when Sam heard that he laughed aloud for sheer delight, and he wept.

And all the host laughed and wept, and in the midst of their merriment and tears the clear voice of the minstrel rose like silver and gold, and all men were hushed. And he sang to them, now in the elven-tongue, now in the speech of the West, until their hearts, wounded with sweet words, overflowed, and their joy was like swords, and they passed in thought out to regions where pain and delight flow together and tears are the very wine of blessedness.

He emphasizes the persistent joy found amidst the characters’ struggles, pointing out the deep friendships, like those between Sam and Frodo, as metaphors for spiritual companionship and support.

Father Gallagher also sheds light on Tolkien’s profound love for nature, evident in his detailed descriptions and personal letters. He suggests that Tolkien’s connection to the natural world goes beyond aesthetic appreciation, touching on a contemplative, spiritual relationship with creation. The episode poignantly touches on the bittersweetness of deep friendships through the lens of Gimli’s parting with Lady Galadriel, highlighting the joy and sorrow inherent in true connections.

Father Gallagher concludes with a powerful reminder that the core message of both “The Lord of the Rings” and the Gospel is one of good news and hope, despite life’s sorrows and challenges.

‘Are you angry with me, Gandalf?’ he said, as their guide went out and closed the door. ‘I did the best I could.’

‘You did indeed!’ said Gandalf, laughing suddenly; and he came and stood beside Pippin, putting his arm about the hobbit’s shoulders, and gazing out of the window. Pippin glanced in some wonder at the face now close beside his own, for the sound of that laugh had been gay and merry. Yet in the wizard’s face he saw at first only lines of care and sorrow; though as he looked more intently he perceived that under all there was a great joy: a fountain of mirth enough to set a kingdom laughing, were it to gush forth.

Joy, Love, and Friendship – A Lord of the Rings Spiritual Retreat w/ Fr. Timothy Gallagher – Discerning Hearts PodcastsThe episode begins with Fr. Gallagher describing “The Lord of the Rings” as a heroic romance, highlighting its themes of joy and good news, which resonate deeply with Christian beliefs. He uses the story of Samwise Gamgee’s eavesdropping on Frodo and Gandalf’s conversation about the One Ring to illustrate the concept of “first love” in the spiritual sense – an initial joy and enthusiasm in the beginning of a spiritual journey.

Fr. Gallagher discusses the power of friendship in the narrative, citing examples from the book where characters express their dedication to each other. This theme is paralleled in the Christian journey, emphasizing the importance of companionship and support in faith.

The episode also explores the unexpected friendship between Legolas, an elf, and Gimli, a dwarf. Fr. Gallagher notes how their bond, despite historical enmity between their races, serves as a metaphor for overcoming prejudice and division.

Kris McGregor relates these themes to personal experiences, such as the joy of parenthood and the complexities of receiving friendship. Fr. Gallagher reflects on this, suggesting that accepting friendship involves risks but is essential for support on life’s journey.

Towards the end, the episode emphasizes the Christian concept of friendship as exemplified by Jesus, reminding listeners of the importance of companionship in spiritual life.

Discerning Hearts reflection questions:1. Heroic Virtue in Daily Life: Reflect on your own life. In what ways are you called to exhibit heroic virtue in your daily experiences, similar to the characters in “The Lord of the Rings”? 2. Joy Amidst Adversity: Consider a time when you found joy in a challenging situation. How did your faith influence your ability to find joy? How can you cultivate a spirit of joy in your current life circumstances, as seen in the story of Sam and Frodo? 3. Value of Friendship and Community: Who are the ‘fellowship’ members in your life who support you in your spiritual journey? How do you contribute to the spiritual growth of others in your community, as the characters in “The Lord of the Rings” support each other? 4. Overcoming Prejudice and Building Bridges: Reflect on the friendship between Legolas and Gimli. Are there areas in your life where you need to overcome prejudice or misunderstanding to build meaningful relationships? 5. Are there times when you have resisted or embraced this call?

‘Well, sir,’ said Sam dithering a little. ‘I heard a deal that I didn’t rightly understand, about an enemy, and rings, and Mr. Bilbo, sir, and dragons, and a fiery mountain, and – and Elves, sir. I listened because I couldn’t help myself, if you know what I mean. Lor bless me, sir, but I do love tales of that sort. And I believe them too, whatever Ted may say. Elves, sir! I would dearly love to see them. Couldn’t you take me to see Elves, sir, when you go?’

Suddenly Gandalf laughed. ‘Come inside!’ he shouted, and putting out both his arms he lifted the astonished Sam, shears, grass-clippings and all, right through the window and stood him on the floor. ‘Take you to see Elves, eh?’ he said, eyeing Sam closely, but with a smile flickering on his face. ‘So you heard that Mr. Frodo is going away?’ ‘

I did, sir. And that’s why I choked: which you heard seemingly. I tried not to, sir, but it burst out of me: I was so upset.

’ ‘It can’t be helped, Sam,’ said Frodo sadly. He had suddenly realized that flying from the Shire would mean more painful partings than merely saying farewell to the familiar comforts of Bag End. ‘I shall have to go. But’ – and here he looked hard at Sam – ‘if you really care about me, you will keep that dead secret. See? If you don’t, if you even breathe a word of what you’ve heard here, then I hope Gandalf will turn you into a spotted toad and fill the garden full of grass-snakes.’

Sam fell on his knees, trembling. ‘Get up, Sam!’ said Gandalf. ‘I have thought of something better than that. Something to shut your mouth, and punish you properly for listening. You shall go away with Mr. Frodo!’ ‘

Me, sir!’ cried Sam, springing up like a dog invited for a walk. ‘Me go and see Elves and all! Hooray!’ he shouted, and then burst into tears.

Episodio 3 -La Primera ReglaLa Primera Regla:

Episode 7 – Samwise’s Journey of Discipleship and Sacrifice – A Lord of the Rings Spiritual Retreat with Fr. Timothy GallagherFr. Timothy Gallagher examines spiritual themes from “The Lord of the Rings,” with a focus on Samwise Gamgee. The episode delves into the Christian concepts of sacrifice, loyalty, and faithfulness, paralleling Sam’s fictional journey with real-life spiritual experiences. Fr. Gallagher emphasizes the importance of steadfast commitment to one’s vocation, whether in marriage, priesthood, or other life paths, using Tolkien’s story as a metaphor for the spiritual life’s challenges and triumphs.

‘I don’t like anything here at all,’ said Frodo, ‘step or stone, breath or bone. Earth, air and water all seem accursed. But so our path is laid.’ ‘Yes, that’s so,’ said Sam. ‘And we shouldn’t be here at all, if we’d known more about it before we started. But I suppose it’s often that way. The brave things in the old tales and songs, Mr. Frodo: adventures, as I used to call them. I used to think that they were things the wonderful folk of the stories went out and looked for, because they wanted them, because they were exciting and life was a bit dull, a kind of a sport, as you might say. But that’s not the way of it with the tales that really mattered, or the ones that stay in the mind. Folk seem to have been just landed in them, usually – their paths were laid that way, as you put it. But I expect they had lots of chances, like us, of turning back, only they didn’t. And if they had, we shouldn’t know, because they’d have been forgotten. We hear about those as just went on – and not all to a good end, mind you; at least not to what folk inside a story and not outside it call a good end. You know, coming home, and finding things all right, though not quite the same – like old Mr. Bilbo. But those aren’t always the best tales to hear, though they may be the best tales to get landed in! I wonder what sort of a tale we’ve fallen into?’

‘I wonder,’ said Frodo. ‘But I don’t know. And that’s the way of a real tale. Take any one that you’re fond of. You may know, or guess, what kind of a tale it is, happy-ending or sad-ending, but the people in it don’t know. And you don’t want them to.’

Episode 6 – Samwise Gamgee’s Path of Faith and Perseverance – A Lord of the Rings Spiritual Retreat with Fr. Timothy Gallagher In this episode, Fr. Gallagher and Kris McGregor focus on the character Samwise Gamgee. Fr. Gallagher highlights Sam’s multifaceted character, emphasizing his fidelity and its spiritual parallels. He delves into Sam’s journey, noting the growth, cost, and joy of fidelity.

Fr. Gallagher points out that Tolkien regarded Sam as the “chief hero” and a jewel among hobbits, a representation of the ordinary person. He discusses how Sam’s character, though initially limited in experience and somewhat conceited, grows through his devotion to Frodo. This growth is symbolized in his journey, which expands his worldview and transforms him.

This episode also explores the tragedy of Gollum’s missed chance for redemption, a pivotal moment thwarted by Sam’s misunderstanding. This incident, Fr. Gallagher explains, underscores human limitations and the complexity of characters who, like real people, possess a mix of strengths, weaknesses, and capacity for heroism.

Kris McGregor reflects on the relatability of Sam’s imperfections in our spiritual journey, noting the importance of striving for excellence rather than perfection. Fr. Gallagher agrees, emphasizing the need to respect our humanity in the quest for holiness. He draws parallels between literary characters and real people, suggesting that everyone has unexplored depths and potential for significant growth.

The conversation concludes with a discussion on the theme of fidelity, using Sam’s commitment to Frodo’s mission as a metaphor for spiritual dedication.

Frodo looked at Sam rather startled, half expecting to see some outward sign of the odd change that seemed to have come over him. It did not sound like the voice of the old Sam Gamgee that he thought he knew. But it looked like the old Sam Gamgee sitting there, except that his face was unusually thoughtful.

‘Do you feel any need to leave the Shire now – now that your wish to see them has come true already?’ he asked.

‘Yes, sir. I don’t know how to say it, but after last night I feel different. I seem to see ahead, in a kind of way. I know we are going to take a very long road, into darkness; but I know I can’t turn back. It isn’t to see Elves now, nor dragons, nor mountains, that I want – I don’t rightly know what I want: but I have something to do before the end, and it lies ahead, not in the Shire. I must see it through, sir, if you understand me.’ ‘I don’t altogether.

But I understand that Gandalf chose me a good companion. I am content. We will go together.’

Tolkien, J.R.R.. The Fellowship of the Ring: Being the First Part of The Lord of the Rings (p. 87). Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. Kindle Edition.

He shook his head, and as he worked things out, slowly a new dark thought grew in his mind. Never for long had hope died in his staunch heart, and always until now he had taken some thought for their return. But the bitter truth came home to him at last: at best their provision would take them to their goal; and when the task was done, there they would come to an end, alone, houseless, foodless in the midst of a terrible desert. There could be no return.

‘So that was the job I felt I had to do when I started,’ thought Sam: ‘to help Mr. Frodo to the last step and then die with him? Well, if that is the job then I must do it.

But I would dearly like to see Bywater again, and Rosie Cotton and her brothers, and the Gaffer and Marigold and all. I can’t think somehow that Gandalf would have sent Mr. Frodo on this errand, if there hadn’t a’ been any hope of his ever coming back at all. Things all went wrong when he went down in Moria. I wish he hadn’t. He would have done something.’

Episode 5 – Frodo’s Journey of Mercy and Transformation – A Lord of the Rings Spiritual Retreat w/Fr. Timothy Gallagher – Discerning Hearts PodcastFather Gallagher and Kris McGregor discuss the spiritual journey of Frodo in “The Lord of the Rings,” particularly the latter part of his journey. He highlights Frodo’s growth and sanctification, as symbolized by Tolkien through Frodo’s changing appearance and inner light. This transformation reflects the spiritual development one undergoes through trials and tribulations.

The discussion moves on to Frodo’s challenges, his suffering, and his gradual transformation. Frodo’s journey is contrasted with Sam’s; while Sam returns to a normal life in the Shire, Frodo is forever changed by his experiences. This is emblematic of different life paths and vocations people undertake.

Father Gallagher then elaborates on Frodo’s inability to destroy the Ring, interpreting it not as a moral failure but a physical and mental exhaustion. He explains how Frodo’s earlier acts of mercy and pity, especially towards Gollum, play a crucial role in the destruction of the Ring and the salvation of Middle-Earth. This act of mercy is contrasted with traditional heroic acts, highlighting a Christian perspective of heroism through forgiveness and compassion.

In conclusion, Father Gallagher reflects on Frodo’s journey as a metaphor for the human experience. He stresses that our struggles, coupled with our capacity for mercy and forgiveness, can lead to fulfilling our life’s mission.

‘Are you in pain, Frodo?’ said Gandalf quietly as he rode by Frodo’s side. ‘Well, yes I am,’ said Frodo. ‘It is my shoulder. The wound aches, and the memory of darkness is heavy on me. It was a year ago today.’ ‘Alas! there are some wounds that cannot be wholly cured,’ said Gandalf. ‘I fear it may be so with mine,’ said Frodo. ‘There is no real going back. Though I may come to the Shire, it will not seem the same; for I shall not be the same. I am wounded with knife, sting, and tooth, and a long burden. Where shall I find rest?’ Gandalf did not answer.

But I have been too deeply hurt, Sam. I tried to save the Shire, and it has been saved, but not for me. It must often be so, Sam, when things are in danger: some one has to give them up, lose them, so that others may keep them.

The Hidden Heroism of Hobbits – A “Lord of the Rings” Spiritual Retreat with Fr. Timothy Gallagher In this episode, Fr. Timothy Gallagher and Kris McGregor explore themes from “The Lord of the Rings,” focusing on Frodo Baggins and his transformative journey. They highlight Tolkien’s inspiration from World War I, depicting the hidden heroism in ordinary people, particularly hobbits.

The discussion emphasizes Frodo’s courageous “yes” to God’s call, drawing parallels to moments in our lives when we face overwhelming challenges. Tolkien intentionally centered the story on hobbits, portraying the sanctification of the humble and the belief that ordinary individuals can grow in holiness.

Fr. Gallagher brings up Fatty Bolger’s choice not to join the journey symbolizes those who fear the unknown, yet he contributes to resisting evil forces in the Shire; connecting Fatty’s reluctance to our own fears when confronted with God’s call.

The pivotal moment at the Council of Elrond, where Frodo volunteers to carry the One Ring, underscores the interplay of freedom and grace. Elrond’s recognition of Frodo’s unique task reflects the dignity in every person’s life, emphasizing the “scandal of particularity.”

“Elrond raised his eyes and looked at him, and Frodo felt his heart pierced by the sudden keenness of the glance. ‘If I understand aright all that I have heard,’ he said, ‘I think that this task is appointed for you, Frodo; and that if you do not find a way, no one will. This is the hour of the Shire-folk, when they arise from their quiet fields to shake the towers and counsels of the Great. Who of all the Wise could have foreseen it? Or, if they are wise, why should they expect to know it, until the hour has struck?

‘But it is a heavy burden. So heavy that none could lay it on another. I do not lay it on you. But if you take it freely, I will say that your choice is right; and though all the mighty Elf-friends of old, Hador, and Húrin, and Túrin, and Beren himself were assembled together, your seat should be among them.’”

Frodo’s Quest: Embracing Life’s Challenges – A Lord of the Rings Spiritual Retreat w/ Fr. Timothy Gallagher – Discerning Hearts Podcast In this episode, Father Timothy Gallagher discusses the spiritual and personal growth lessons that can be drawn from the character of Frodo in J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings”. Host Kris McGregor and Father Gallagher explore how Frodo’s journey and struggles with the responsibility of the ring mirror our own challenges in life.

Father Gallagher emphasizes that, like Frodo, we often feel ill-equipped for the tasks or challenges God places before us. Frodo’s initial reluctance and feeling of being ‘too small’ for such a perilous quest is a sentiment shared by many biblical figures and ordinary people alike. However, Gandalf’s role in Frodo’s journey symbolizes the presence of God’s grace, assuring us that we are never alone in our struggles and that we have been chosen for our tasks for a reason.

The conversation also touches upon the theme of free will and the importance of the choices we make. Gandalf’s faithfulness, in contrast to the betrayal of other characters like Saruman, shows the significant impact our decisions have in the world. The podcast highlights that while we may feel overwhelmed and unprepared for the challenges we face, with faith and support, we are capable of extraordinary things.

Overall, the episode delves into the deeper meanings behind Tolkien’s characters and narrative, drawing parallels between Frodo’s journey and our own spiritual and personal challenges, reminding listeners of the strength and heroism inherent in even the most ordinary of people.

He went to the window and drew aside the curtains and the shutters. Sunlight streamed back again into the room. Sam passed along the path outside whistling. ‘And now,’ said the wizard, turning back to Frodo, ‘the decision lies with you. But I will always help you.’ He laid his hand on Frodo’s shoulder. ‘I will help you bear this burden, as long as it is yours to bear. But we must do something, soon. The Enemy is moving.’

There was a long silence. Gandalf sat down again and puffed at his pipe, as if lost in thought. His eyes seemed closed, but under the lids he was watching Frodo intently. Frodo gazed fixedly at the red embers on the hearth, until they filled all his vision, and he seemed to be looking down into profound wells of fire. He was thinking of the fabled Cracks of Doom and the terror of the Fiery Mountain.

‘Well!’ said Gandalf at last. ‘What are you thinking about? Have you decided what to do?’

‘No!’ answered Frodo, coming back to himself out of darkness, and finding to his surprise that it was not dark, and that out of the window he could see the sunlit garden. ‘Or perhaps, yes. As far as I understand what you have said, I suppose I must keep the Ring and guard it, at least for the present, whatever it may do to me.’

‘Whatever it may do, it will be slow, slow to evil, if you keep it with that purpose,’ said Gandalf.

  7. Interpreting Gandalf’s Advice: Reflect on Gandalf’s statement, “I will help you bear this burden, as long as it is yours to bear.” How can this be interpreted in the context of your own life challenges and the support you receive?
  8. The Role of Community in Overcoming Challenges: Frodo’s journey is not a solitary one; he is supported by a community. How important is community in your spiritual life and in facing life’s challenges?

Exploring the Christian Dimensions in Tolkien’s World – A Lord of the Rings Spiritual Retreat w/ Fr. Timothy Gallagher – Discerning Hearts PodcastIn this episode, host Kris McGregor engages in a profound dialogue with Father Timothy Gallagher about the Christian underpinnings in J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings.” Father Gallagher delves into the non-allegorical but deeply Christian and Catholic elements of Tolkien’s masterpiece. He clarifies that while “The Lord of the Rings” is set in a pre-Christian era and does not explicitly reference Christianity, its truth and values are significantly shaped by Tolkien’s Christian worldview.

The conversation highlights the intentional absence of allegory in Tolkien’s writing, his preference for history (real or feigned), and the varied applicability of his stories to the reader’s experience. Father Gallagher emphasizes the deep impact of the narrative’s characters, their struggles, and the underlying thread of providence, drawing parallels to real-life challenges and choices. Kris and Father Gallagher explore the compelling nature of Tolkien’s writing and the profound way it speaks to the human heart, offering insights for those embarking on the spiritual journey through Middle-earth. This episode offers a unique perspective on how Tolkien’s faith subtly yet powerfully influenced one of the most beloved stories in literature.

He paused, and then said slowly in a deep voice: ‘This is the Master-ring, the One Ring to rule them all. This is the One Ring that he lost many ages ago, to the great weakening of his power. He greatly desires it – but he must not get it.’

Frodo sat silent and motionless. Fear seemed to stretch out a vast hand, like a dark cloud rising in the East and looming up to engulf him. ‘This ring!’ he stammered. ‘How, how on earth did it come to me?’

Tolkien, J.R.R.. The Fellowship of the Ring: Being the First Part of The Lord of the Rings (pp. 50-51). Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. Kindle Edition.

‘There was more than one power at work, Frodo. The Ring was trying to get back to its master. It had slipped from Isildur’s hand and betrayed him; then when a chance came it caught poor Déagol, and he was murdered; and after that Gollum, and it had devoured him. It could make no further use of him: he was too small and mean; and as long as it stayed with him he would never leave his deep pool again. So now, when its master was awake once more and sending out his dark thought from Mirkwood, it abandoned Gollum. Only to be picked up by the most unlikely person imaginable: Bilbo from the Shire!

‘Behind that there was something else at work, beyond any design of the Ring-maker. I can put it no plainer than by saying that Bilbo was meant to find the Ring, and not by its maker. In which case you also were meant to have it. And that may be an encouraging thought.’ ‘

It is not,’ said Frodo. ‘Though I am not sure that I understand you. But how have you learned all this about the Ring, and about Gollum? Do you really know it all, or are you just guessing still?’

The Eucharistic Heart of Tolkien – A “Lord of the Rings” Spiritual Retreat with Fr. Timothy GallagherFr. Timothy Gallagher and Kris McGregor look into the profound connection between J.R.R. Tolkien’s literary masterpiece, “The Lord of the Rings,” and his deep Catholic faith. Fr. Gallagher’s insightful exploration of J.R.R. Tolkien’s faith and its reflection in “The Lord of the Rings” unveils the depth and richness of this literary masterpiece.

At the turn of the century, “The Lord of the Rings” emerged as the people’s choice for the book of the century in multiple polls. Tolkien’s primary motivation, as expressed in the book’s forward, was to craft a tale that would captivate, amuse, delight, and deeply move its readers. Father Gallagher emphasizes that, first and foremost, the allure of the book lies in its literary excellence.

What sets “The Lord of the Rings” apart is Tolkien’s deep Catholic faith, rooted in the courageous conversion of his mother, Mabel. A convert who faced rejection and poverty, Mabel’s steadfast commitment to Catholicism profoundly influenced his worldview. Fr. Gallagher also highlights the sacrificial nature of Mabel’s faith, a theme that echoes in the trials of characters within the epic. Tolkien sees his mother’s sufferings as a testament to her martyrdom for the faith.

Fr. Gallagher also shares Tolkien’s acknowledgment of the silent appeal of the tabernacle, a call that continually drew him back to the Blessed Sacrament throughout his life. Tolkien’s daily communion and his reflection on Christ’s words to Peter, “Feed My Sheep,” further emphasize the Eucharistic center of his faith.

142 To Robert Murray, SJ. 2 December 1953 76 Sandfield Road, Headington, Oxford

“I think I know exactly what you mean by the order of Grace; and of course by your references to Our Lady, upon which all my own small perception of beauty both in majesty and simplicity is founded. The Lord of the Rings is of course a fundamentally religious and Catholic work; unconsciously so at first, but consciously in the revision. That is why I have not put in, or have cut out, practically all references to anything like ‘religion’, to cults or practices, in the imaginary world. For the religious element is absorbed into the story and the symbolism.”

Introduction – The Letters of St. Therese of Lisieux with Fr. Timothy GallagherEpisode 1 – Fr. Gallagher discuss the importance of St Therese of Lisieux, who Pope St. Pius X called the most important saint of the 20th century. We discuss the significance of “letters” in revealing aspects of the saints and their relationships. In the case of St. Therese, Fr. Gallagher notices the “other centeredness” of her letters. He also sets into context the age and culture of France and how it touched the lives of the Martin family.

In this conversation, Fr. Gallagher chooses to begin with a look at the lives and letters of her canonized parents, Louis and Zélie Martin as seen through the eyes of St. Therese’s family members.
Here are some of the various texts Fr. Gallagher refers to in this episode:

Conclusion – Struggles in the Spiritual Life with Fr. Timothy Gallagher O.M.V.Fr. Timothy Gallagher and Kris McGregor continue a 19-part series on the various Struggles in the Spiritual Life. This episode concludes the series with reflections from St. Therese of Lisieux.

You can pick up a copy of the book here**:

An excerpt from the chapter, “Conclusion”:

“The day was August 8, 1897, the month before her death. Thérèse lay on her sickbed. Her sister Pauline was with her in the room. As she lay there, Thérèse pondered her life. In particular, she remembered the Christmas night eleven years earlier when she received what she had called “the grace of my complete conversion.” On that “night of light,” God’s grace and an act of courage liberated her from the nervousness and sensitivity that had oppressed her for years. Thérèse thought, too, of Judith in the Old Testament and of the courage with which she had acted. Thérèse began to speak.

Many, she told her sister, feel that they lack such courage. Then she said, “God never refuses that first grace that gives one the courage to act; afterwards, the heart is strengthened, and one advances from victory to victory.” That is the message of this book. A path to liberation from discouragement, confusion, and pain in the spiritual life exists.

God has not called us to captivity but to freedom. Clarity regarding the struggle is possible, and remedies are available. Begin. Take the first step. Take it now. And take it knowing that “God never refuses that first grace that gives one the courage to act; afterwards, the heart is strengthened, and one advances from victory to victory.” May that grace and that courage bless our spiritual lives.”

From the book’s description: “Here is a powerful, life-changing book that will help you understand and conquer the struggles you face in your spiritual life. It’s a book for those who love the Lord and desire holiness yet often feel adrift or stagnant in their search for spiritual growth.

All of us encounter valleys on our journey with the Lord — those periods of spiritual desolation that are a painful yet unavoidable feature of our prayer life. Spiritual desolation is as complex as we are, so understanding what is happening and responding to it properly are critical to reaching the heights of holiness.

With warmth and understanding, Fr. Gallagher carefully identifies in this book the various forms of spiritual and nonspiritual desolation and supplies the remedy for each. You’ll learn how to discern whether your struggles derive from medical or psychological conditions or whether those struggles are spiritual and permitted by the Lord for reasons of growth. In each case, you’ll be given the remedy for the struggle. You’ll also learn the forms of spiritual dryness and of the Dark Night — and how to respond to them.

In chapter after chapter, Fr. Gallagher presents a particular struggle as experienced by fictional characters and then provides the advice he gives to those who come to him for spiritual direction about that struggle. You’ll gain confidence as you journey through desolation, and you’ll learn to reject the enemy’s ploys to infect you with a sense of hopelessness.

Image of God – Struggles in the Spiritual Life with Fr. Timothy Gallagher O.M.V.Fr. Timothy Gallagher and Kris McGregor continue a 20-part series on the various Struggles in the Spiritual Life. This episode explores spiritual discouragement and various forms of dryness in the spiritual life, focusing on our image of God in prayer.

You can pick up a copy of the book here**:

An excerpt from the chapter, “Image of God”:

“When Bob perceives that his image of God differs from the biblical image of God, his prayer ceases to be dry. He is now free to meet God as He is: loving, close, understanding, merciful, encouraging — the heavenly Father whom Jesus reveals to us. Through no fault of his own, Bob has absorbed an image of God as a demanding Father, quick to note faults, impatient, ready to criticize. Bob is not aware of this image, but it burdens his relationship with God, and so his prayer.

When he prays with Genesis 3, Bob focuses on “all the harm that came from” this sin and “the way their sin was punished.” The message of mercy in that same chapter (Gen. 3:15) and, above all, in the Cross do not speak to him, and his prayer leaves him uneasy. He describes Romans 7:14–25 as “Paul’s struggle about not doing the good that he wants but doing the bad that he does not want,” again overlooking the message of freedom with which the passage concludes (Rom. 7:25). When he tries to pray, Bob writes, “I’m unsettled, I’m distracted, and God seems distant. . . . I try, but nothing moves me very much. It’s discouraging. Maybe I’m not made for this.” Bob’s prayer is dry. His prayer changes when Bob realizes that God is different — more loving, warm, close — than his image of God had led him to believe.

Conversation with his director, prayer on biblical passages that reveal God as a loving Father, and his willingness — not without struggle — to share with God his experience of human fatherhood and the mixture of goodness and pain found in it, begin to set Bob free. Now he can meet his heavenly Father as God really is. Now a relationship based on a true image of the Father can develop. Now he knows himself to be a beloved son of this Father. Now his prayer is not dry.”

A Need to Share – Struggles in the Spiritual Life with Fr. Timothy Gallagher O.M.V.Fr. Timothy Gallagher and Kris McGregor continue a 20-part series on the various Struggles in the Spiritual Life. This episode explores spiritual discouragement and various forms of dryness in the spiritual life, focusing on sharing our spiritual struggles with others.

You can pick up a copy of the book here**:

An excerpt from the chapter, “A Need to Share”:

“Most fundamentally, prayer is a relationship: the human person and the Divine together, in communication. Dryness may arise in prayer when we need to share something with the Lord but have not done so. We may feel ashamed, too angry, too hurt. And so we do not speak of it. Then our prayer feels superficial, dry. We have little to say. Little! The contrary is true: prayer is dry because we have so much to say and have not said it. Father Reed’s question is the right one: “Have you spoken about this with the Lord?”

The Jesus who speaks so sensitively with the Samaritan woman (John 4:4–42), who meets with the nervous Nicodemus by night (John 3:1–2), who invites the two saddened disciples to tell him their burdens (Luke 24:13–35), who approaches the weeping Mary Magdalene and pronounces her name (John 20:16), who heals Peter’s threefold denial with the threefold question about love (John 21:15–17): this Jesus never “bulldozes” into human hearts. He is patient (Matt. 12:20) and gentle (Matt. 11:29). But he loves us too much to leave us alone with our fear and shame. He invites us to share the burden with him, to tell him about it, to allow him to accompany us in it. When we do, this form of dryness will pass, and prayer will flow.”

Growth – Struggles in the Spiritual Life with Fr. Timothy Gallagher O.M.V.Fr. Timothy Gallagher and Kris McGregor continue a 20-part series on the various Struggles in the Spiritual Life. This episode explores spiritual discouragement and various forms of dryness in the spiritual life, focusing on growth in prayer.

You can pick up a copy of the book here**:

An excerpt from the chapter, “Growth”:

“Yes, this situation can be confusing. What is happening in Cathy’s prayer? It has become dry. Is this because she lacks formation (chapter 15), has grown negligent (chapter 16), or has permitted an inconsistency between her life and prayer (chapter 17)? None of this appears to be present: Cathy has received formation in prayer, is faithful to it, and shows no sign of inconsistency between her life and prayer. Yet her prayer is dry. Something else, then, is at work, and in this case, something blessed. Cathy finds herself less drawn than before to reflect on or imagine a scriptural text. She esteems this way of praying and has found it fruitful in the past.

Now, however, when she reflects or imagines, she says that “it felt like work, ‘busier’ than I wanted to be in prayer.” On the other hand, at one point “I let the imagining go and just sat with the Lord. That felt better.” Very likely, Cathy’s prayer is simplifying. At times, her heart desires to relinquish the “busyness” of reflecting and imagining and simply be with the Lord, her heart with his heart, with little activity, simply together in a blessed and loving communion. She fears that when she gives her heart this freedom, she is not really praying — not thinking about the meaning of a text or participating imaginatively as it unfolds.

On the contrary! Cathy, and anyone in her situation, needs to know that this silent, loving communion is genuine prayer.”

Inconsistency – Struggles in the Spiritual Life with Fr. Timothy Gallagher O.M.V.Fr. Timothy Gallagher and Kris McGregor continue a 20-part series on the various Struggles in the Spiritual Life. This episode explores spiritual discouragement and forms of dryness in the spiritual life, with a particular focus on inconsistencies between prayer and daily life.

You can pick up a copy of the book here**:

An excerpt from the chapter, “Inconsistency”:

“Inconsistencies between our prayer and our lives will cause dryness in prayer: a refusal to forgive, firmly guarded anger, all-encompassing pursuit of material goals, self-centeredness, harmful relationships, and so forth. As these areas of our lives are brought to Christ and healed, dryness in prayer lifts.

Of the time before her profound conversion, Saint Teresa of Avila writes, “I began to return to prayer without, however, removing the occasions of sin. . . . My life was very hard, because in prayer I understood my faults more clearly.”When that conversion occurred, the dryness passed, and her prayer blossomed in a way that continues to bless the Church. The dryness caused by inconsistency between prayer and life is, at root, a loving call from God to healing and to new life.”

Forms of Dryness – Struggles in the Spiritual Life with Fr. Timothy Gallagher O.M.V.Fr. Timothy Gallagher and Kris McGregor continue a 20-part series on the various Struggles in the Spiritual Life. This episode explores spiritual discouragement and forms of dryness in the spiritual life.

You can pick up a copy of the book here**:

An excerpt from the chapter, “A Need for Formation”:

“Paul’s father’s dryness in prayer does not arise from any fault on his part. On the contrary, he is diligent in preparing and approaches his prayer with goodwill. It derives, rather, from a lack of formation in prayer. Signs of this abound. When Paul’s father begins to pray, he chooses the Rosary because he saw his parents pray it. He knows little about the Rosary beyond its mechanics and, understandably, is easily distracted when he prays it.

Paul’s father has never read the Bible. He has no formation in Scripture and, again unsurprisingly, struggles to comprehend it. When he tries to meditate, he encounters more questions than spiritual insight. He does not understand why given Gospel passages are chosen for given days. With good intentions but unwisely, he chooses a time and place that render prayer difficult. Most likely, if Paul’s father continues to pray in this way, his prayer will be dry. Even more likely, he will not persevere.

This will change when he receives formation in prayer. Bible study will help him to understand the texts and so permit them to nourish him spiritually. Parish classes on prayer; spiritual books about meditation; resources on the web; meetings with a spiritual director, if possible; conversation with Paul, who is more experienced in prayer — all this will prepare Paul’s father to meditate fruitfully. As his schooling in prayer deepens, his meditation will no longer be dry. The Rosary, too, understood as contemplation of Jesus, will be less distracted. Formation in prayer resolves this form of dryness.

An excerpt from the chapter, “Something Has Slipped”:

“In this experience of dryness, the issue is negligence regarding prayer. The solution is to reverse that negligence. We all have routines, times of day, ways of choosing material, places, and the like that we know help us to pray. When we are faithful to them, this form of dryness resolves.”

I Feel Alone – Struggles in the Spiritual Life with Fr. Timothy Gallagher O.M.V.Fr. Timothy Gallagher and Kris McGregor continue a 20-part series on the various Struggles in the Spiritual Life. This episode explores spiritual discouragement and a form of spiritual desolation involving feelings of being alone from God.

You can pick up a copy of the book here**:

An excerpt from the chapter, “I Feel Alone “:

“In a final form of spiritual desolation, Ignatius tells us, a person feels “as if separated from his Creator and Lord.” Cathy experiences this strongly in the weeks described: “All that closeness and warmth of God’s love? It’s gone like smoke. . . . I’m sitting in the kitchen as I write, and I feel like I’m here, and God is a million miles away.” I’m here, and God is a million miles away. I’m here, sitting in my kitchen, alone in my apartment, commuting to work, driving to pick up the children, sitting at my computer . . . and you are a million miles away, distant, remote.

Have you ever felt that? Yes, certainly, you have, and I have. Once more: no shame, no surprise; be aware, identify, reject.”

I Have No Fervor & I Feel Sad – Struggles in the Spiritual Life with Fr. Timothy Gallagher O.M.V.Fr. Timothy Gallagher and Kris McGregor continue a 20-part series on the various Struggles in the Spiritual Life. This episode explores spiritual discouragement and lack of enthusiasm as well as sadness as forms of desolation.

You can pick up a copy of the book here**:

An excerpt from the chapter, “I Have No Fervor”:

How should we understand Beth’s experience this Wednesday evening? We have no indication that Beth is at fault. She is faithful. She prepares and attends the class in her usual way. She does her best to participate — so well in fact, that none perceive her lack of enthusiasm. What, then, is Beth experiencing?

Having followed Ignatius thus far, we can guess the answer! This Wednesday evening, Beth experiences a form of spiritual desolation. She feels, to use Ignatius’s words, “totally tepid,” that is, completely without fervor as she performs a spiritual practice. In this form of desolation, we feel spiritually lukewarm, indifferent, unenthusiastic, without affect. When we pray, serve the Lord, live our vocations, take new steps in our spiritual lives, seek holiness, but find ourselves tepid and without fervor as we do these things, we are experiencing spiritual desolation. The adverb “totally” is again expressive.

Have you ever felt this form of spiritual desolation? Yes, certainly, we all have at times. Obviously, the enemy’s goal is that such tepidity cause us to question ourselves, to lose heart, to abandon these helpful practices. Beth responds well when she remains faithful, the right response for us as well.

Once again, no shame! No surprise! Be aware, identify, reject.

Gallagher O.M.V, Fr. Timothy ; Gallagher O.M.V, Fr. Timothy. Struggles in the Spiritual Life: Their Nature and Their Remedies (pp. 76-77). Sophia Institute Press. Kindle Edition.

An excerpt from the chapter, “I Feel Sad”:

Before Paul — or we — can answer these questions, we need to identify the sadness he feels. Paul is faithful to prayer and has been for years. He loves it, and he feels its fruits. Though the sadness weighs on him, Paul does not let it stop him. In fact, he is progressing in prayer, as his increased awareness of his experience reveals. Paul now notes spiritual movements, even this undramatic, nonclamorous sense of sadness. He can identify the thoughts from which it originates. Paul’s sadness, then, does not derive from negligence on his part.

How, then, should we understand it? Paul experiences a form of spiritual desolation that Ignatius describes as finding oneself “totally sad.” Paul is not yet “totally” sad, but things appear to be moving in that direction.

Once again, no shame, so surprise; be aware, identify, reject. This sadness is distinct from the healthy — even if painful — sadness we feel at the loss of a loved one, the termination of a rewarding occupation, and the like.

This is a spiritual sadness with nothing healthy about it. It arises from lies of the enemy. He tells you that you should be ashamed to bring such “small” things to prayer — to the God who knows when a sparrow falls to the ground and counts the hairs on your head (Luke 12:6–7), the God to whom everything in your life is important. The enemy tells you that you are not really praying — when, in reality, God is calling you to a simpler and richer prayer. The enemy tells you that you have stopped at the threshold of deep prayer — when you have only encountered the dry and distracted moments that all who pray faithfully experience. All this is from the liar and father of lies! The only fitting response is to unmask the lies and reject them.

I Don’t Have the Energy – Struggles in the Spiritual Life with Fr. Timothy Gallagher O.M.V.Fr. Timothy Gallagher and Kris McGregor continue a 20-part series on the various Struggles in the Spiritual Life. This episode explores spiritual discouragement and a form of spiritual desolation that takes on the form of tiredness and exhaustion.

You can pick up a copy of the book here**:

An excerpt from the chapter, “I Don’t Have the Energy”:

In this form of desolation, we feel spiritually sluggish, indolent, lazy, lackadaisical. The adverb “totally” is powerful: in time of spiritual desolation, we may feel totally sluggish, lazy, and slothful as regards various aspects of our spiritual lives. We feel no energy for prayer, for God’s service, for involvement in our parish, for holiness in our vocations, and the like. The feeling of slothfulness in spiritual desolation may contrast sharply with the energy we more habitually feel for these same things when not in desolation.

There is no shame in experiencing this form of spiritual desolation. We all do at times. What is important — Julie is on target with this — is to be aware of it, understand it for the tactic of the enemy that it is, and firmly reject it. For Bob, this means that he should not renounce leadership of the group until he has greater clarity about his spiritual situation (rule 5: in time of desolation, never make a change). That change will not resolve his lack of energy; identifying and rejecting the desolation will. Bob may further apply the means Ignatius offers to resist and overcome the desolation: prayer of petition, meditation, examination, suitable penance, and the rest.

I Don’t Feel God’s Love – Struggles in the Spiritual Life with Fr. Timothy Gallagher O.M.V.Fr. Timothy Gallagher and Kris McGregor continue a 20-part series on the various Struggles in the Spiritual Life. This episode explores spiritual discouragement and a form of spiritual desolation: times when we do not feel any sense of God’s love for us.

You can pick up a copy of the book here**:

An excerpt from the chapter, “I Don’t Feel God’s Love”:

This is yet another form of spiritual desolation: times when we feel no sense of God’s love, of His closeness, of warm love for others in God, but rather, we feel a kind of spiritual distance and coldness. As we’ve said so often, there is no shame in experiencing this. To feel this form of spiritual desolation does not mean that God does not love us, that we do not love Him, or that we do not desire to love others.

It simply means that God is permitting us to undergo a time of spiritual desolation because of the growth we gain when we go through it well (see the final paragraph of chapter 8). Cathy’s spiritual desolation as she prays with the calming of the storm is actually a sign that her prayer is progressing richly. For ten years, a wound in her heart has remained unhealed. God loves her too much to allow this to continue unaddressed. Almost inevitably, as she grows closer to God in prayer, this wound is touched. When it is, spiritual desolation results: pain, anger, a sense of distance from God, and an absence of all warmth. If Cathy finds wise counsel to help her understand this and if she does not stop praying, then, for the first time in ten years, deep spiritual healing can occur. Like the disciples in the boat and like Lazarus’s sisters, she will find that if Jesus slept and if he delayed two days, it was because he loved them and had a greater gift to give.

This episode explores spiritual discouragement and a tactic of the enemy to induce a lack of hope, another form of a spiritual desolation, and ways to fight against it.

You can pick up a copy of the book here**:

An excerpt from the chapter, “I’ll Try, but Nothing Will Come of It”:

With Father Reed’s help, Bob recognizes a tactic of the enemy, another form of spiritual desolation. Ignatius describes this as “lack of hope.” When we experience this form of desolation, our thoughts are like Bob’s: we lose hope of any real progress in loving God, in prayer, in holiness, and in living our vocation well. If we think like this, we will be tempted, like Bob, to give up — precisely the enemy’s goal.

All of this is a lie! If ever you feel “defeated before you begin” in your spiritual life, recognize the lie of the enemy and reject it. Do not relinquish your efforts to grow spiritually. God’s love and the power of his grace are with you in these efforts. Compared with this, the enemy’s lies are a very small thing. Further, we can prepare to reject such lies even before the enemy brings them (Ignatius’s rule 10). After this attack by the enemy, for example, Bob can prepare himself to reject similar lies should the enemy bring them again.

I’m Troubled and I’m Tempted; I’m Going to Fail – Struggles in the Spiritual Life with Fr. Timothy Gallagher O.M.V.Fr. Timothy Gallagher and Kris McGregor continue a 20-part series on the various Struggles in the Spiritual Life. This episode explores spiritual discouragement and the disquiet that can come from temptations and ways the enemy can bring desolation into areas of nonspiritual vulnerability in our lives.

You can pick up a copy of the book here**:

An excerpt from the chapter “I’m Troubled and I’m Tempted”:

John experiences a form of spiritual desolation that Ignatius describes as “disquiet from various agitations and temptations.” If John can identify his experience as the tactic of the enemy that it is — spiritual desolation — peace will begin to return, and he will be strengthened to resist it. If John is further aware that there is no shame in undergoing such spiritual desolation, that all do from time to time, he will be additionally encouraged in his struggle.

The enemy brings this spiritual desolation into a nonspiritual vulnerability in John: a place of worry — his understandable concern about the growth on his face and his anxiety as he awaits the results of the second biopsy. John deals well with this: he speaks with his wife, and he is faithful to prayer. Texts of the Bible help him. But even as he turns to the Lord, the enemy brings spiritual desolation, “disquiet from various agitations and temptations.” This need not surprise John or us! Ignatius helps us understand this experience and points the way to freedom.

Gallagher O.M.V, Fr. Timothy ; Gallagher O.M.V, Fr. Timothy. Struggles in the Spiritual Life: Their Nature and Their Remedies (p. 45). Sophia Institute Press. Kindle Edition.

An except from the chapter “I’m Going to Fail”:

Julie’s experience permits an important observation. If the enemy ordinarily brings spiritual desolation into areas of nonspiritual vulnerability (tiredness, discouragement, depression, and the like), then whatever you do to reduce or eliminate that nonspiritual vulnerability will greatly ease your spiritual life. If, for example, Julie and Bob communicate and resolve their tension, Julie will find herself much less susceptible to the “lack of confidence” described here. The same is true for all of us when we experience nonspiritual vulnerabilities. Julie also writes, “I’m up, then so quickly down. You and the others seem so much more stable and so faithful. I must be different.” A further lie of desolation is this: “It’s just you. Other people don’t go through this. You’re up, then down. Other people are steady. It’s only you.” Again, emphatically no!

When Julie knows the others better, and they share on a deeper level, she will find that all undergo these ups (times of spiritual energy, of feeling God’s closeness — that is, of spiritual consolation) and downs (times without spiritual energy, of not feeling God’s closeness — that is, of spiritual desolation). If you experience times of spiritual consolation and times of spiritual desolation, then you share the experience of every man or woman who has ever loved the Lord. What matters is — by now you can tell me! — to be aware, understand, and take action. Take action: that is, to accept God’s gift of spiritual consolation and to reject the enemy’s discouraging lies in spiritual desolation.

How Can I Be Drawn to Such Things? – Struggles in the Spiritual Life with Fr. Timothy Gallagher O.M.V.Fr. Timothy Gallagher and Kris McGregor continue a 20-part series on the various Struggles in the Spiritual Life. This episode explores spiritual discouragement and ways the enemy draws us to “low” and “earthly” things to harm us in our spiritual life.

You can pick up a copy of the book here**:

An excerpt from the book:

Into this vulnerable space the enemy brings the further burden of spiritual desolation, and specifically what Ignatius calls a “movement to low and earthly things.” Obviously, telephones, refrigerators, the Internet, and similar things serve in good ways: that is why we have them. But, like Beth, in time of spiritual desolation we may feel drawn to them in “low” and “earthly” ways — that is, in ways harmful to us spiritually.

That Beth — and we — feel this pull in time of spiritual desolation should not surprise us, nor is there any shame in feeling this pull. It is simply a tactic of the enemy, a form of spiritual desolation. Again, such is the spiritual life in a fallen but redeemed and loved world. What does matter and matters greatly, is that we be discerning: that we note this pull to low and earthly things, identify it as the tactic of the enemy that it is, and, with God’s grace and courage, reject it.

I’ve Lost My Peace – Struggles in the Spiritual Life with Fr. Timothy Gallagher O.M.V.Fr. Timothy Gallagher and Kris McGregor continue a 20-part series on the various Struggles in the Spiritual Life. This episode explores spiritual discouragement and the enemy’s “war against the peace” people experience in it.

You can pick up a copy of the book here**:

An excerpt from the book:

When people love the Lord, Ignatius says, and rejoice in the peace this brings, the enemy may attempt to undermine that peace by troubling them. Elsewhere, Ignatius describes this spiritual disturbance as the enemy’s “war against the peace” these people experience. Note that the enemy does not, at this point, tempt Paul to anything sinful. He seeks rather to diminish and even eliminate Paul’s peace, replacing it with trouble of heart. Again, there is no shame in experiencing this or similar tactics of the enemy. It is simply what happens when we live the spiritual life in a fallen but redeemed and loved world. As with Julie, Paul will not be harmed if he is aware of, identifies, and rejects the enemy’s spiritual desolation.

Obviously, if Paul — or any one of us — does not identify and reject this tactic of the enemy, it will cause harm. What, then, of Paul’s questions? Is his disturbance a sign that he is doing something wrong? That he is trying too hard? Trying too little? That he is regressing? The answer to all these questions appears to be no. In Paul’s journal, we see no sign of regression — quite the contrary. Most probably, precisely because Paul is progressing so well, the enemy induces this “disturbance of soul” and “war against peace” in an attempt to hinder his progress. How does Paul and how do we reject such disturbance from the enemy? As already said, the first need is to make no changes, to relinquish nothing of the spiritual program we have in place.

I Can’t See – Struggles in the Spiritual Life with Fr. Timothy Gallagher O.M.V.Fr. Timothy Gallagher and Kris McGregor continue a 20-part series on the various Struggles in the Spiritual Life. This episode explores spiritual discouragement and how it affects our ability to pray.

You can pick up a copy of the book here**:

An excerpt from the book:

The enemy’s lie says, “Look how badly things are going! You are confused. You can’t see clearly. You are regressing. And things will only get worse.” No! For months, Julie has prayed faithfully and sought to grow. She is simply — again, there is no shame in this — experiencing a tactic of the enemy: a spiritual desolation that the enemy hopes will impede her growth.

By enemy, Ignatius intends Satan and his associated fallen angels, together with the wound of concupiscence — a legacy of original sin — and harmful influences around us in the world. By spiritual desolation, he intends a heaviness of heart (and so, desolation) on the level of our relationship with God (and so, spiritual).

Julie experiences one form of such spiritual desolation, a form that Ignatius calls “darkness of soul.”11 In such spiritual desolation, a burden, a confusion, a heaviness — a darkness — enters our prayer and our efforts to love God. A feeling that this will worsen may accompany this darkness.

I Try to Pray, but I’m So Discouraged – Struggles in the Spiritual Life with Fr. Timothy Gallagher O.M.V.Fr. Timothy Gallagher and Kris McGregor continue a 20-part series on the various Struggles in the Spiritual Life. This episode explores the nonspiritual nature of discouragement and how it affects our ability to pray.

You can pick up a copy of the book here**:

An excerpt from the book:

When we respond well to discouragement, our spiritual lives benefit greatly. A classic principle underlies this: “gratia supponit perficitque naturam,” that is, “grace presupposes nature and perfects it.” God’s supernatural life in our souls — His grace — presupposes our humanity and elevates it. Therefore, whatever strengthens our humanity, whatever assists our physical and psychological well-being, opens us more fully to God’s grace. If Beth and you and I care properly for our physical and emotional humanity, our spiritual lives will grow easier.

Do you struggle in your prayer, your vocation, your service of God? The answer, at times, will be yes. When you do, consider the helpful questions in this chapter and the previous one. Not all spiritual struggles arise from physical or emotional factors. We do well, however, not to overlook these when faced with spiritual burdens.

I Just Can’t Pray – Struggles in the Spiritual Life with Fr. Timothy Gallagher O.M.V.Fr. Timothy Gallagher and Kris McGregor continue a 20-part series on the various Struggles in the Spiritual Life. This episode goes into the physical and mental struggles we face when we are unable to pray.

You can pick up a copy of the book here**:

An excerpt from the book:

“Yes, the spiritual life is easier when we take wise care of the body. If you struggle in the spiritual life, ask first: How is my physical energy? Do I get enough sleep? Do I exercise sufficiently? Does my diet sustain my energy? If the answers are positive, you may presume that spiritual struggles, should you experience them, arise from a different cause. But it is wise to ask these questions before you presume this.

Sometimes, life simply makes demands on our energy. If John’s pace at work increases still more, if his wife’s illness grows more serious and long-lasting, if he himself faces physical issues, if the children’s needs increase, and the like, then his energy for prayer will be less. God never asks the impossible! John, or any one of us in similar circumstances, can only do our best to care for our energy. Such expenditures of energy, accepted out of love for our vocation — in this case, marriage and fatherhood — bring us closer to God, though our prayer may be more tired. Even in such situations, however, God asks us to care for the body as best we can. And this will bless our prayer.”

Introduction – Struggles in the Spiritual Life with Fr. Timothy Gallagher O.M.V.Fr. Timothy Gallagher and Kris McGregor begin a 20-part series on the various Struggles in the Spiritual Life. This episode gives an overview of what is to come and examples from the lives of the saints.

An excerpt from the Prologue:

All who walk the spiritual journey undergo, in their individual ways, such struggles. Our spiritual tradition knows these struggles, explains their causes, and supplies their remedies. Such struggles lie within God’s loving providence. Understood and faced well, they will not harm us. They will, on the contrary, lead to growth — the reason for which God permits them.

Struggles are not the heart of the spiritual life. God’s love is — His deep, warm, faithful, and personal love for you. That is the center. That is the source of your joy. Because you know this, you love the spiritual life. And because you love it, you have begun to read this book.

We turn now to a wisdom that will protect this center and guide us into its richness.

Day 5 – Honoring God by Joy

“Sometimes it may seem as though God does not react to evil, as if he is silent. And yet God has spoken. He has replied, and his answer is the cross of Christ: a word that is love, mercy, forgiveness.”

With spiritual joy, one gives greater honor and glory to God, manifesting with deeds that he thinks well of God and is content in His service and with His treatment. With persistent unhappiness, by contrast, one dishonors God, slights God by one's deeds and manifests that he thinks poorly of God. …If it is such a horrible thing to demean one’s neighbor, what then will it be to demean God? A sad servant dishonors his master, but a joyful and content servant honors him. For that reason we want to give to others a great idea of God our Father in order to give Him the glory that is His due. We want to serve Him with joy and delight, and not with sadness and against our will. We esteem, we appreciate, we magnify His gifts. We pray by hoping in Him, and we glorify Him again, as a God absolutely good, merciful, generous, and faithful. Let those be sad who serve tyrants, such as the world, the flesh, and the devil.

”Speak about God with all, however, in a way that is worthy of Him. It is in accordance with the counsel of the Holy Spirit: Think of God in a spirit of goodness (Wisdom 1:1).”

Episode 1 - Fr. Gallagher discuss the importance of St Therese of Lisieux, who Pope St. Pius X called the most important saint of the 20th century.  We discuss the significance of "letters" in revealing aspects of the saints and their relationships. In the case of St. Therese, Fr. Gallagher notices the "other centeredness" of her letters.  He also sets into context the age and culture of France and how it touched the lives of the Martin family.

In this conversation, Fr. Gallagher chooses to begin with a look at the lives and letters of her canonized parents, Louis and Zélie Martin as seen through the eyes of St. Therese's family members.

Here are some of the various texts Fr. Gallagher refers to in this episode:

St. Therese of Lisieux by Those Who Knew Her (Testimonies from the Process of Beatification)

Fr. Timothy Gallagher and Kris McGregor begin a new series that reflects on the life of the "forgotten" sister of St. Thérèse of Lisieux, Servant of God Léonie Martin.

Fr. Gallagher says, "Léonie's life holds a very important story because she was the forgotten one; she was the one who was in the last place; she was the one who was less gifted than the others. Today we would call her a ‘problem child’, and we'll see that she certainly was the source of great anxiety to her parents, especially to her mother, Zélie, who loved her dearly."

As a child, Léonie suffered from severe illnesses and physical maladies that would plague her entire life. She also struggled with understanding social clues and interactions, and with behaving appropriately. Conventional educational models of the day failed to meet her particular needs, and she was labeled "developmentally delayed". Yet those who knew her well described her as having a "heart of gold".

Who was Léonie and what were her struggles? Why has her cause of canonization begun? Father Gallagher, along with Kris McGregor, answers these questions and explains why Léonie is "a bearer of hope” in this landmark series.

A Sister of St. Thérèse: Servant of God, Léonie Martin – Bearer of Hope with Fr. Timothy Gallagher – Episode 4 Léonie Martin In this episode, we come to learn of “the pivotal moment” in the life of Léonie.

Even with all of the physical and emotional issues suffered by Léonie, there seemed to be something more, a mystery as it were, that prevented Zélie from having a deep maternal relationship with her struggling daughter. Zélie would say that this inability to win the heart of this difficult daughter was for her “the greatest sorrow of her life.”

Since the death of Sr. Marie Dosithée (Élise Guérin), Zélie begged her beloved oldest sister to intercede for her in heaven in order to return her poor child’s heart to her. At this same time Marie, her oldest daughter, having finished her time at boarding school was now home. Marie, who began to help with the care for her younger sisters, became aware of an alarming situation involving the maid Louise and her concealed abusive treatment of Léonie. She promptly informed her mother. Zélie, with this new knowledge and understanding, took immediate action.

Fr. Gallagher says, “Léonie’s life holds a very important story because she was the forgotten one; she was the one who was in the last place; she was the one who was less gifted than the others. Today we would call her a ‘problem child,’ and we’ll see that she certainly was the source of great anxiety to her parents, especially to her mother, Zélie, who loved her dearly.”

A Sister of St. Thérèse: Servant of God, Léonie Martin – Bearer of Hope with Fr. Timothy Gallagher – Episode 5 Léonie Martin In this episode, we hear of the “remarkable change” that Zélie has seen in her daughter now that the maid’s terrible behavior toward Léonie has been exposed. Their mother/daughter relationship has completely changed. The heart of Leonie has opened up to her mother and Zélie has the answer to her prayers…they are sharing a deeper, understanding bond of love.

As Léonie is absorbing her motherly love, Zélie sees her also absorbing more of God’s love and this is proving transformative for her daughter. But Zélie’s illness is progressing as well. She prays to God for a healing of her breast cancer, so that she might be able to care for her younger children, especially her poor Léonie, who needs her mother now more than ever before. She is greatly concerned, and asks “Who could help Léonie more than her own mother?” She turns to the Blessed Virgin Mary asking her to intercede with God for a miracle.

Zélie also ponders the reason why God would allow the bad treatment of her daughter by the maid to last so long. Fr. Gallagher reflects on that mystery, as well as the forgiveness given to Louise, the Martin’s maid, by both Zélie and Léonie, which didn’t excuse the horrible behavior, but showed a great degree of grace-filled compassion.

Fr. Gallagher says, “Léonie’s life holds a very important story because she was the forgotten one; she was the one who was in the last place; she was the one who was less gifted than the others. A Sister of St. Thérèse: Servant of God, Léonie Martin – Bearer of Hope with Fr. Timothy Gallagher – Episode 6

In this episode, Zélie’s battle with cancer ends with her death. Now a great time of transition begins for the entire Martin family, especially for Léonie. The family moves from Alcon to Lisieux to be closer to Zélie’s brother, Isidore, and his wife, Celine. Per one of Zélie’s dying wishes, Celine lovingly becomes like a second mother to the girls.

Something remarkable is beginning to occur at this time. Léonie, over the course of several years, successfully attends a Benedictine boarding school located in Lisieux. She begins to express herself with loving affection to others and expresses hope for the future. Her family shares their belief that this “change” is due to Zélie’s heavenly intercession for her daughter. However, this is also a time of uncertainty and some sadness for Léonie. While her sister’s lives are moving forward, her life remains unclear. What will become of poor Léonie as she begins adulthood.

Timothy Gallagher – Episode 7

In this episode, Fr. Gallagher shares some of the letters that Léonie wrote to her sisters later in her life which reflects her perception of herself during earlier years.

Then we hear of Léonie’s first attempt to enter into religious life as told by her sister, St. Therese. The Martin family visits Alençon with Marie so she may visit her mother’s gravesite for the last time prior to her entrance into the Carmelites of Lisieux. Léonie goes to the Poor Clare Monastery that she used to visit with Zélie. To the surprise of her family, they find that she has been accepted into the Poor Clare novitiate. This is rather a shocking development to the family members. Will this be something that will work out for Léonie?

Fr. Gallagher says, “Léonie’s life holds a very important story because she was the forgotten one; she was the one who was in the last place; she was the one who was less gifted than the others. Léonie has returned home after a failed attempt of joining the Poor Clare’s and she eventually hopes to join the Order of the Visitation, founded by Saint Francis de Sales and Saint Jane Frances de Chantal.

Thérèse, 10 years younger than Léonie, proves to be a strong spiritual friend and companion for her sister. Through this episode, we begin to get a glimpse of their tender, encouraging relationship. But as she has experienced in the past, this attempt to enter the Visitation Monastery in Caen will have its challenges and sufferings.

As a child, Léonie suffered from severe illnesses and physical maladies that would plague her entire life. She also struggled with understanding social clues and interactions and with behaving appropriately. Conventional educational models of the day failed to meet her particular needs, and she was labeled “developmentally delayed.” Yet those who knew her well described her as having a “heart of gold”.

Who was Léonie and what were her struggles? Why has her cause of canonization begun? Father Gallagher, along with Kris McGregor, answers these questions and explains why Léonie is “a bearer of hope” in this landmark series.
