The newly regathered people of Jerusalem went to work rebuilding the temple in Ezra 3, only to have their work quickly interrupted and shut down. Thankfully, God had a plan for His people, despite the opposition they faced. He would ensure that His work was done. He always does!

As Ezra opens, there is both excitement as God stirs up the heart of a pagan king to send God’s people home, and there is mundane with a long list of names and numbers. Even so, there is a common thread: God’s temple is meant to be in Jerusalem, and God sent His people back to build it. If God didn’t send them and empower them, it wouldn’t get done. It had to be the work of God.

Although we never want to rush childhood, there comes a point for everyone when we need to grow up. There comes a point when we put away childish things and behaviors, understanding that we’ve had enough of it, and we move on to other things. We might say something similar about Christian discipleship. Peter talks about it as he gets into Chapter 4.

The ancient people of Jerusalem hit their rock-bottom in 587BC, seen in their horrific conquest by the Babylonians and in their resulting captivity. There is no question that the things God’s people endured were awful…but there was also no doubt that God was still God. He was still good, and His people could still turn to Him in faith.

Is there hope in the book of Lamentations? Yes! The people of Judah were God’s covenant people, and whatever else happened, they remained God’s covenant people. Thus, they could hope in God’s covenant promises…no matter what.

The Bible has much to say about marriage…perhaps not so much the wedding ceremony, but certainly the design God has for it, as well as the roles to be fulfilled by both husband and wife. Why should we abide by our Biblical roles in marriage? So that people see Jesus and glorify God.

There are wise ways to use our words, and unwise ways. We need to be mindful with what sort of ‘wisdom’ we use with our words, for there is one way that is welcomed by God, and another which is opposed by Him. As James puts it plainly in Ch 4:6, “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”

Some things regarding the plans of God concerning the nation of Israel seemed to Jeremiah’s ears to be almost inconceivable, impossible. But as Jeremiah was reminded, he worshipped the God who does the impossible. There is nothing too hard, too difficult for Him to do.

Despite the children’s rhyme about sticks and stones, words can hurt, even leaving lasting scars. If we are going to be sincere unhypocritical disciples of our Lord Jesus Christ, we need to watch our mouths. While we don’t want our faith to be nothing but talk, the things we say do matter.

The church is the one place where unloving partiality should be absent. We are all equal in our need for the forgiveness of God through Jesus Christ. How could any true Christian practice partiality over another? It is antithetical to the gospel, and James calls it out at the beginning of Chapter 2.

If Christians are to emulate the character of Christ, it means we must develop the character of Christ…and that means we require trials. Just like physical exercise results in physical endurance, so do spiritual trials result in spiritual strength. It may seem like eating brussels sprouts at the time, but the end-result is worth it!

When Jeremiah stood near the temple and preached a message of God’s judgment upon Judah, the people didn’t like it and he was soon put on trial for his very life. His defense was simple: all he did was preach the word of God. If the people didn’t like it, that was their problem. God’s word is God’s word, whether we like it or not.

It is possible to do God’s will with God’s help. God wants us to live for Him, to do His work…and God makes it possible for us to do it. This is the good news that is contained in the gospel, of which we are reminded as the marvelous book of Hebrews comes to an end.

As Christians, we’ve got to pay attention to Biblical teaching! It means listening to the local leadership given us by God, but as long as what those leaders are teaching is Biblical, then it is inevitably going to lead us to Jesus and keep us looking to Jesus.

Hebrews 13:7-17, “Listen Up!”
We’ve all either had it said to us, or we’ve said it to others: “listen up!” It wasn’t uncommon in my schooldays that my teachers had to call the class to attention, because we were spending too much time talking to one another.
God sometimes has to say the same thing to us, especially since we have the tendency to get so distracted. Instead of staying grounded in the good news of grace in the gospel, we’ll have our ears caught by someone promoting a set of rules for a Christian life. It may seem logical, as if it might help us be better Christians. But soon we find ourselves far from Jesus, wondering how we got bound in legalism, or other such mess. God would call us to “listen up!” Don’t get distracted by other things, but keep your eyes on Jesus and your ears attuned to His word.
The original readers of the book of Hebrews had done just this, which was the main reason why the author wrote his book. Though they professed faith in Jesus, they started to turn back to the things they had always known, and it was the source of much trouble and confusion.
By this point in the book, the writer had concluded his primary argument, and he turned to his closing exhortations. He began with an emphasis on the two greatest commandments: to love God, and to love others. Love is supposed to be evident among the believing church! We are to love one another as brothers and sisters in Jesus. We are to love strangers who might one day become believers. We are to love our spouses and families as those who have been entrusted to us. And we are to love God more than anything else. Be it gold or silver, nothing should pose any real competition for our sincere love for God. He is the awesome God, the covenant-keeping God. He promises to be with us always, never forsaking us.
Although he was close to the end, the author wasn’t quite done with his book, and he had one final piece of instruction for his readers – something that tied into the previous ideas he’d already written. Before he completely closed things out, he wanted his readers to pay attention to their local leaders and the things those leaders taught, because that might be the very thing that would guard them from the temptations to go back to the Judaism they had always known.
The readers (like all of us) are called to listen up! Listen to Biblical teaching, because that same Biblical teaching is going to take us to Jesus.
Hebrews 13:7–17
- How to treat your leaders & their teaching #1 (7-9).
7 Remember those who rule over you, who have spoken the word of God to you, whose faith follow, considering the outcome of their conduct.
- This isn’t the first time in Ch 13 that the directive of “remember” has been given. In v3, the writer told his readers to “remember the prisoners as if chained with them,” bringing attention to the persecuted church. Here, he tells his readers to “remember” their local leaders. Although the English translation is the same, the Greek words are slightly different, albeit synonyms with each other. The basic idea here is for the Christians to keep their leaders top of mind, paying close attention to them and to their example. — FYI: the NKJV phrasing of “those who rule over you,” (repeated again in v17) perhaps implies a bit harsher than what is there. The ESV rendering of “your leaders” works well, as the word more often gives the idea of “regard, consider” than it does “lead,” (although “lead, guide” is perfectly valid). It isn’t so much ‘ruling’ as it is guiding and governing. Nuances of translation aside, the bottom-line exhortation is evident: when it comes to the people who teach the word of God to the local church, the church isn’t to take them for granted. They are to remember those leaders.
- Some suggest that the author encourages the church to remember leaders of the past, perhaps some who had already died and gone to be with the Lord. The interpretation is based on the aorist tense seen in “have spoken,” as well as the reference to the “outcome of conduct” belonging to these leaders. One’s outcome is never truly known until the end (i.e., the end of life), and although these leaders once taught the word to the local church, perhaps they were no longer teaching. – Where this interpretation falls short is seen in the description of the leaders themselves, seen in the present tense “those who rule.” If the writer wanted to refer to past leaders, he would have used some form of past tense. As it was, these leaders were current leaders, with every assumption to still be alive at the time.
- Don’t miss the central descriptive quality of these local leaders. They are those who speak (teach) “the word of God” to the people. Whatever might be involved in ‘remembering,’ there is something that these leaders must first do if they are to be worth remembering: teach the Bible / proclaim the gospel. If they do not steadfastly teach the word of God, then they fail in their primary stewardship. These men have been entrusted by God with the souls of those in their care (v17). The way to care for them is to feed them God’s word. When Jesus restored Peter to ministry, what was His charge? “Feed My lambs… Tend My sheep… Feed My sheep…” (Jn 21:15-17). That is the fundamental job of every pastor/teacher. If a church leader neglects this, he has no business being in leadership at a local church.
- Of these responsible Bible-teaching leaders entrusted to the local church, not only was the church to remember them, but they were also called to “follow” them, considering their fruit. Paul could write to the Corinthians, “Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ,” (1 Cor 11:1). The language may not be identical, but the general idea is. Paul’s relationship with Jesus was such that he could serve as an example to other Christians. So too, are other Bible teaching leaders within the local church. Christians who are younger in the faith ought to be able to look at those who are more mature in the faith, and learn from their examples.
- Does that mean we should blindly follow the faith of our local leaders? Not at all! At best, every pastor and elder is a sinner saved by the grace of God in Jesus Christ. At his finest and most spiritually mature, every pastor and elder will understand that he is absolutely deserving of eternal hell and the only reason he is spared is because Jesus paid the price for his sin. No pastor is perfect. [Certainly not this one!] But we can still learn from others, in both our successes and failures. How so? By “considering the outcome of (one’s)” No pastor (no matter how godly he might appear) is perfect. How does he handle his imperfections? How does he handle his failures? That’s worth paying attention to with careful consideration.
8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
- Jesus never changes. Leaders come and go, but Jesus remains the same. As the eternal Son of God, He has all the character traits of God the Father (for Father, Son, and Spirit are the one Triune God). Just as God the Father is unchanging, so is God the Son and God the Spirit. The theological term for this is “immutability.” There is nothing of God’s core character that changes. God was good in the past; He will be good in the future. God has been patient in the past; God continues to be patient today. His decrees are not wishy-washy, He doesn’t change with the times. The preferences and morality of our culture may change, but our God does not.
- Objection: “What about the incarnation? That was a major change for Jesus!” True…prior to becoming incarnate in the womb of Mary, the 2nd Person of the Trinity always existed as God the Son (the Logos/Word of God, often seen as the Angel of the Lord), but until that moment He never had a human nature. But at the moment of His conception, a human nature was added to His divine nature. Without question, that was a major change. But that isn’t the issue for the writer of Hebrews. (1) Nowhere does the writer specifically state that Jesus is the same in eternity past; only that He is the same “yesterday,” which leaves open the possibility that only the Incarnate Jesus is in view. (2) The basic character and teaching of Jesus has never changed from eternity past to eternity future. He has always been the image of the invisible God (Col 1:15). He has always been good, just, and perfect. He has always been the intended Messiah, the promised Seed of the Woman who would crush the head of the serpent, defeating death (Gen 3:15). He has always been the promised King and will always be the promised King. He is the eternal Victor. That does not change!
- More importantly to the intent of the author, the Biblical truths concerning Jesus do not change. His gospel (and the doctrines surrounding the gospel) remains true forever. This leads to the next exhortation…
9 Do not be carried about with various and strange doctrines. For it is good that the heart be established by grace, not with foods which have not profited those who have been occupied with them.
- In this, the writer seems to have some information regarding his Jewish Christians brethren that we don’t necessarily know. Apparently, there were “various and strange doctrines” floating around the local congregations, some dealing with strict dietary regulations. Might this refer to the kosher diet of Judaism? Certainly, but there were other various religious diets in use at the time (such as among the Gnostics). The writer wants to ensure that his readers major on the major and minor on the minors. He doesn’t want them to get swept away with stuff that doesn’t pertain to the doctrines of the gospel.
- We still see this sort of thing today. Certain Christian groups impose fasts at certain times of the year. Other non-Christian groups promote their own dietary preferences with religious fervor. We shouldn’t let those things sway us. The most heart-healthy diet is one that is founded on the grace of God. Let Him care for your spiritual heart; follow your own convictions on the rest.
- Whatever the specific issues that were behind this exhortation to the original readers, a couple of points stand out. First: foreign doctrine can move us. It can “carry” us to places we don’t want to go. Teaching that is clearly based on the Bible is not “various and strange.” If something is “strange” (or “foreign”), it clearly has not come from the Bible. We are to treat those things very carefully, understanding them as the potential danger that they are. They might just sweep us off our feet and carry us into legalism away from the gospel of grace. We can see it in the example of the unnamed diet. If you look for spiritual profit in food, you know you are looking in the wrong place. Diet does not bring you closer to God; grace does. – This is the danger of these strange/foreign teachings. And this is another reminder why it is so important for us to be in the Bible for ourselves. If we do not consistently read our Bibles and know the Scripture, we won’t recognize foreign doctrine when it comes. The only way we will recognize the strange is when we know the truth.
- Second: solid doctrine can strengthen us. Our hearts can/should “be established by grace.” The more we stick to the fundamentals of the gospel of Jesus and His grace, the stronger in grace we will be. How does someone get stronger in the gym? By sticking to the fundamentals. Keep doing those baseline compound movements like bench-presses, squats, deadlifts, etc., being mindful of the basics, and physical strength will come as a natural benefit. The same thing applies spiritually. Keep the main things the main things. Beware of running off on tangents with someone else’s preferred theological debate; you stick to Jesus. Keep looking at the cross and His resurrection. Keep seeking His grace and the power of the Spirit. You keep doing that, and spiritual strength (establishment) will be the natural result.
That some of these strange doctrines dealing with diet were promoted as some sort of spiritual benefit is evident from how the writer of Hebrews continues. Whereas he began by writing of the need to remember their leaders, paying attention to good teaching from the word of God, he shifted into this example of food. That same example could be used to take them back to the basics of the gospel, particularly our ability to worship God through Jesus…
- What true praise looks like (10-16).
10 We have an altar from which those who serve the tabernacle have no right to eat.
- When it comes to spiritual food, we have a better altar from which to eat that the priests can’t eat. What is this “altar”? Some see it as a reference to the Lord’s Supper, but that interpretation does not arise naturally from the text. (Be careful with eisegesis: reading your own biases into the text!) If we take the analogy of Jesus as a sacrifice to its fullest (which is the context), then the place of His sacrifice (i.e., His altar) was the cross. While the celebration of communion remembers Jesus’ sacrifice at the cross, it does not reenact it. His sacrifice is not repeatable. Thus, we do not ‘eat’ from the altar every time communion is served. [This is one of the problems with the Roman Catholic mass.]
- The main point for the author is not the actual altar of sacrifice, but the contrast between the Levitical priests and us. Those priests had access to eat the animals sacrificed to God, whereas the rest of the nation did not. Although there were some offerings that were eaten by those who brought them, most of the meat and bread brought to the altar were eaten by the priests who tended to the altar. Herein is the contrast: as the believing church, we have access to a sacrifice that not even the high priest of Israel had. In faith, each of us have already partaken of Jesus. Should the Jewish high priest in Jerusalem remain unconverted to Jesus, then he remained cut off from this sacrifice. He had “no right to eat” of it.
- Not only did he not have the right to eat of it because of his lack of faith in Jesus as Messiah, but even from the perspective of the Levitical priestly system, he had no right to eat from this altar, as the writer goes on to explain…
11 For the bodies of those animals, whose blood is brought into the sanctuary by the high priest for sin, are burned outside the camp. 12 Therefore Jesus also, that He might sanctify the people with His own blood, suffered outside the gate.
- Again, there were indeed offerings that were eaten by the priests. The offerings that remained inside the tabernacle/temple courtyard were often given specifically to the priests. (That was part of God’s provision for them.) But that wasn’t every offering. Some offerings/sacrifices were to be “burned outside the camp,” and those were not to be eaten. — Which sacrifice is in view? Some suggest this refers to the Day of Atonement, during which the animals that were slain were not eaten by the priest, but (after their blood and fat used appropriates) their carcasses were taken outside the camp to be burned (Lev 16:25-28). Yet that wasn’t solely practiced on the Day of Atonement. Something similar took place with every sin offering. In a sin offering, once the blood was used for atonement with its fat burned on the altar, the hide and remaining flesh were taken to a place outside the camp to be burned (Lev 4:7-12). The point isn’t so much to split hairs between a general sin offering and the specific Day of Atonement. Rather, we see a pattern established in the law of Moses that is once again fulfilled in Jesus. The offerings that were made specifically to atone for sin were consumed outside the camp, away from the tabernacle/temple. like.Jesus.
- What do we know of Jesus’ own sacrificial death? He died outside the camp/gate. The Romans did not crucify anyone on temple grounds. No doubt, they probably would have done so if they thought they could get away with it. (It would have seen a powerful message!) But although they ruled Judea and Jerusalem, even the Romans knew that they could only push things so far apart from total riots and disruption. Thus, executions took place outside the city walls, often in some raised area where the bodies of the condemned would be fully visible to public traffic. The gospels tell us that Jesus was crucified in “a place called Golgotha,” or “Calvary,” meaning “Skull.” John specifically tells us that “the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city,” (Jn 19:20), which means it was outside the city walls. (From an archaeological perspective, both the traditional site of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, and what is known as Gordon’s Calvary are both outside what would have been the walls at the time of Jesus.) Put it together, and we find out exactly what kind of offering Jesus became for us: a sin offering. Be it pictured on the Day of Atonement or any other day, Jesus was an offering for sin. His death took place outside the camp, not merely because it was practical, but because it was Biblical. This was yet one more way Jesus perfectly fulfilled the law on our behalf.
- There was nothing about the death of Jesus that was accidental or haphazard. There was nothing about His death that was left to chance. Jesus’ mission was too important. If Jesus didn’t die the way He did – if He didn’t fulfill prophecy the way He did…none of us would be saved. If He wasn’t perfectly the sacrificial Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world, then all our sin would still remain. He had to do it all…and He did.
- Be careful not to gloss over this too quickly. What took place at the altar where Jesus was sacrificed outside the gate? Among other things, He made it possible to “sanctify the people with His own blood.”
- Notice that everyone is not automatically sanctified (set apart, made holy). “He might sanctify the people…” The Greek grammar is that of possibility (subjunctive mood); not description. Jesus’ death on the cross is absolutely sufficient for all mankind to be saved (every human being in past, present, and future); His death is efficient for those who believe, trusting Him by faith. Without question, we need to be sanctified (set apart from this world and its judgment, being dedicated unto God as His holy people). It only happens when we believe upon Jesus.
- This sanctification takes place because Jesus shed “His own blood” for us. This is where we see a massive difference between the Levitical sacrifices and Jesus’. No priest in Hebrew history ever shed his own blood for the sins of the people. Not Aaron the brother of Moses, nor even Melchizedek the king-priest encountered by Abraham. Animals were all sacrificed by them, the priests administering the various sacrifices. But Jesus shed “His own blood” for us. The writer of Hebrews already wrote about this when writing of Jesus’ supremacy to all other priests: Hebrews 9:11–12, “(11) But Christ came as High Priest of the good things to come, with the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands, that is, not of this creation. (12) Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption.” Jesus’ blood did what the blood of bulls and goats could never do. Through His own blood, He put away sin forever (9:26) – He offered one sufficient sacrifice to bear the sins of many (9:27) – He perfected forever those who are being sanctified (10:14), etc. It was the blood of Jesus that made it possible. Without His blood shed on our behalf, we have no hope of salvation whatsoever.
13 Therefore let us go forth to Him, outside the camp, bearing His reproach. 14 For here we have no continuing city, but we seek the one to come.
- We go to Jesus! Of our own volition in a conscious act of faith/belief, we “go forth to” Jesus “outside the camp,” to partake of His offering for us. If Jesus truly is the only sufficient sin sacrifice offered by God (which He is!), then we had better partake of Him. There’s only one way to do it. We go to where He is. He has already come to us in the form of incarnate humanity. Our response is to go to where He offers Himself to us.
- Too many people in too many churches miss the active aspect of this. They miss the personal aspect of this. Sure, they’ve gone to church…they’ve walked inside a church building and attended services. Maybe they’ve even been through a confirmation class of some sort. But they haven’t gone forth “to Him”…they haven’t made the conscious choice to go to Jesus. They’ve been around things and people that refer to Jesus, and they know a lot of facts about Jesus, but they as individuals have not gone to Him. Hear this clearly: without going to Jesus, we are not saved! There is only one way to experience the salvation offered by God, receiving eternal forgiveness: by believing upon Jesus Christ as Lord. Romans 10:9, “that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.”You must confess (agree) that Jesus is your Lord (your Master, your King). You must believe that God raised Him from the dead after He died for your sins at the cross. Without that individual intentional confession of faith (surrender to Jesus), no one is saved.
- If that’s you, what’s stopping you? What is more important than receiving the forgiveness of God for your sins? Go to Jesus! Don’t even wait till the end of the message. Go to Jesus right now in faith, believe upon Him, and be saved!
- According to the author of Hebrews, where could Jesus be found? “Outside the camp.” Obviously, he was writing in symbolic terms. The cross upon which Jesus died had long since been removed, and Jesus had long since risen from the dead. Today, Jesus does not hang upon a cross on Skull Hill; He sits at God’s right hand in victory! But figuratively speaking, we go to Jesus in faith outside the camp, because His sin offering for us was made outside the camp. He went outside the city walls of Jerusalem, so those who seek Him in faith need not look for Him within Jerusalem. We don’t look for Jesus in Jerusalem or in any earthly city. Like ancient Abraham, we look for the city made without hands, the heavenly Jerusalem (12:22). This is the city that is “to come.”
- This helps us keep perspective, especially when it comes to the “reproach” we will inevitably encounter as believers in Jesus. It might be easier for us to go outside the camp when we understand we aren’t looking for a home inside the camp. It isn’t always easy to bear the reproach of Christ. Who enjoys the ridicule and disdain of this world? But we aren’t looking for approval from this This world is not our home. Our home is with Jesus in the place that He has been preparing for us for the past 2000 years. Sure, we bear His reproach now, but ‘now’ is merely temporary. We’re waiting for something far better!
- The movie industry understands how this works. This is the reason they create so many teasers and trailers (and why it takes 30 minutes of watching commercials for other movies before the movie you actually paid for begins!). They give you just a taste of some new movie to come, enough to whet your appetite. You aren’t supposed to be satisfied just watching the trailer. The trailer isn’t the main event; the movie is. – This is where many of us get our perspectives messed up. We treat the current world as the main event. At best, it’s only the trailer! We know what is yet to come, as Jesus has told us what to expect…that is what we’re waiting for. So sure, we bear His reproach in this world, and we bear it gladly…because we know that the city that is yet to come is far
- Don’t miss what the author was saying to his original Jewish Christian readers: “let us go forth to Him, outside the camp.” He included himself in this. Basically: “Let us as faithful Jews who have come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah… Let us go to Jesus outside the traditional camp/city that we’ve always known. We will not find the true acceptable sacrifice on the altar that is at the Jerusalem temple. For that, we must go outside the city, understanding that we will leave behind certain things of our culture. We must leave the camp to go to Jesus…but when we do, we will find the true sufficient sacrifice that has been both offered and accepted by God.” For these Jewish Christians, the writer was telling them to leave behind all they had previously known with their temple system. To a large extent, they needed to leave Judaism itself behind (at least, as it was practiced), that they might follow Jesus as their Lord and Messiah.
- For most of us, we are not Jewish Christians. And those who are have never witnessed an animal sacrifice at the Jerusalem temple, as it has not stood since 70AD. Even so, the call to discipleship is still to leave everything behind that we might follow Jesus. It may require saying goodbye to certain things that we’ve always known. It might require a potential break with certain family members (Mt 10:37). It might require losing our lives in order that our lives be saved (Mt 16:25). To follow Jesus is a wholehearted commitment, requiring complete surrender. Until we are willing to break with certain things of our past, we will never go ‘outside the camp’ to be with Jesus.
15 Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name. 16 But do not forget to do good and to share, for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.
- We have better sacrifices to give to God than those that can only be offered on a temple altar in Jerusalem. We need not travel to a certain city to offer our praise. As Jesus told the Samaritan woman at the well, we can offer our praise to God anywhere: John 4:23–24, “(23) But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. (24) God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” She had asked Jesus if worship should be offered on Mt Gerizim, or on Mt Moriah in Jerusalem. Jesus basically told her neither, for true spiritual worship is not dependent on physical location. The sacrificial worship we now offer to God can be offered anywhere, as long as it is a true child of God offering it.
- It is amazing how many Christians (including evangelicals!) misunderstand this basic point. True spiritual worship, offered by born-again Christians (those who are born of the Spirit of God through faith in Jesus as the Son of God) can happen anywhere. It should happen anywhere. The kind of sacrificial worship described by the author of Hebrews is to take place “” Our offerings are to be in the present tense, i.e., never-ending. That means we don’t need to be in certain buildings or around certain people. That means that the ‘church’ is made up of people; not wood, steel, and drywall. The ‘house of the Lord’ today is not any building made by men and women; it is the church built up by the Lord Jesus Himself. We are the temple of the Holy Spirit.
- To this, we might say “amen,” but then we’ll sing songs about going into the ‘house of the Lord,’ and all of a sudden we start speaking about buildings again. I praise God for buildings, for it is a blessing to have a place to gather. But we do not need to be in this place (or any other) to offer our praise and worship unto God. You can be in your bedroom, in your car, on the trails, at work, at the ballgame… You can be anywhere you can possibly imagine, even in the hospital, or (God forbid) in prison, and still give praise to God!
- By all means, we should gather whenever possible for the purpose of doctrine, fellowship, the breaking of bread, and prayers. We should be careful not to forsake the assembling of ourselves together (Hb 10:25). Corporate assembly is a vital part of spiritual health. But the sacrifices of worship that we offer unto God cannot be dependent on any building. They are dependent only upon our willingness to offer them!
- What are those sacrifices? The writer of Hebrew mentions two. (1) The praise of our lips; (2) good works and sharing.
- Our “praise” is to be offered to God, “that is, the fruit of our lips.” We are to give “thanks” to God, the Greek literally referring to confession (ὁμολογέω ~ to say the same thing). ESV translates it: “the fruit of lips that acknowledge His name.” Technically, it is not incorrect to translate it as “thanksgiving,” as the dictionaries and lexicons allow for this definition. It comes back to the nature of God. When we speak the truth about Him (speaking that which God declares about Himself in His word), it will naturally end in thanks and praise. – The basic issue is clear: use your lips to praise the Lord! Whenever God comes to mind throughout your day, give Him thanks. Give honor and glory to His name. Speak of Him to others. Use your lips and your words to give a sacrifice of praise to God.
- Again, that shouldn’t be limited to a church building, but neither should it be neglected in corporate gathering. When we come together, one of our foremost activities is to praise the Lord. Make sure you’re doing it! It’s easy to fall into certain ruts, allowing phrases to roll off the tongue (whether you mean it or not). It can be easy to engage in the physical activity of singing, without meaning from your heart the words that you sing. Don’t let it be meaningless to you! When you come for worship, worship! Give praise to God with your lips!
- Not only should our words give honor to God, so should our actions. Just as the writer labeled the fruit of our lips as a “sacrifice” to God, so did he use the same label of “sacrifices” for the times we “do good” and “” Sometimes in evangelicalism, we downplay the importance of good works, knowing that no one is saved by any good works he/she does. There is no act of service, no financial offering, no religious work of any kind that will earn us salvation…but that doesn’t mean that there is no place for good works in the lives of saved Christians. Of course there is! When Paul wrote to the Ephesians declaring unabashedly that we have been saved by grace through faith, and not of works lest anyone should boast (Eph 2:8-9), the apostle went on to say that God wants us to do good works: Ephesians 2:10, “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.” God desires our good works – He is “well pleased” when we do good works, seeing them as sacrificial acts of worship.
- What kind of good works? The sky is the limit! Maybe it is visiting someone in need of a friend… Giving financially to a missionary or to help with disaster relief… Performing an act of service for someone in the congregation (or down your street)… Giving food to the poor, volunteering at a hospital, giving blood, etc. Apart from the Biblical prohibitions of upholding sinful things, there is no limit on the kinds of good works you can do in the name of Jesus. Each one of these things can be an act of worship, well pleasing unto God!

- How to treat your leaders #2 (17).
17 Obey those who rule over you, and be submissive, for they watch out for your souls, as those who must give account. Let them do so with joy and not with grief, for that would be unprofitable for you.
- The command is slightly different than in v7. Earlier, it was to “remember” the leaders of the local church. This time, in case it wasn’t clear enough, the writer gets more direct: “obey.” Even here, the idea isn’t harsh as if anyone is to blindly obey whoever is set over them as church leadership. In other contexts (and in far more contexts), the word translated “obey” is rendered as “persuade, convince, win over…or be won over by, persuaded by.” This isn’t permission for any church pastor to demand blind immediate obedience under the guise of “Because I said so…” (That isn’t Biblical leadership; that is abuse!) Rather, the church leaders are to present their instructions in such a way that their reasons are Biblically evident, to where the right response is Biblical submission.
- There is a good reason why those in the congregation are supposed to submit to their local leaders: their leaders face divine accountability. Each man will one day stand before God and answer for whom they led. – Don’t get the wrong idea. Just because our leaders will be held accountable for our souls doesn’t give us an excuse regarding our own accountability. Not at all. As believers, we will each stand at the Bema Seat of Christ (2 Cor 5:10). This will be our judgment for eternal reward (not for salvation, as Jesus was already judged for our sin on our behalf). Yes, we will stand there being accountable individually…but our leaders will also give account for us as well. This gives a bit of insight into the “stricter judgment” that all teachers of God’s word will face (Jas 3:1). Our leaders will be held accountable for how they led us. They will answer for how they taught and modeled the word of God to the rest of the church. If certain Christians are stunted in their spiritual maturity because of a pastor’s refusal to teach the Bible, then be assured that the Lord Jesus will hold that pastor to account.
- Besides, it is better for the congregation if the leadership is able to lead “with joy and not with grief.” After all, who wants to be pastored by Grumpy Gus? The more someone makes it difficult for local leadership, the less the leadership will be inclined to lead joyfully…and that just makes it tough on everyone. It’s like when you take a road-trip with small kids. As long as everyone tries to get along, it can be a fun ride. But one person in a bad mood can ruin the trip for everyone in the car. It may not be the most theological of reasons given by the author, but it’s definitely practical!
Conclusion:
As Christians, we’ve got to pay attention to Biblical teaching! It means listening to the local leadership given us by God, but as long as what those leaders are teaching is Biblical, then it is inevitably going to lead us to Jesus and keep us looking to Jesus. As long as we do that, everything will be fine.
Where we get off base is when we get off doctrine. When we start entertaining unbiblical ideas and getting caught up in rabbit trails of unimportance, that is when we start losing focus. For the original readers, that was when they would be most tempted to go back to the Judaism they had always known. For us, that is when we get caught in ditches like that of legalism (just as did the original readers when they put all the attention on diet). Or, we’ll jump into the other ditch of licentiousness, when we no longer care that the Lord Jesus sanctified us with His own blood, calling us to holiness.
Rather than heading into either ditch, let us go straight ahead to Jesus! Let us ensure that we go to Him outside the camp, keeping life in perspective as we bear His reproach. Let us look forward to the day when we will be with Him face-to-face enjoying the city He has prepared for us. And in the meantime, let us give Him the sacrifices of our words and of our works as we give praise to Him with all that we have!
Have you gotten off track? Have you fallen in a ditch? Have you slowed in our sacrificial offerings of praise? Look again to your Lord Jesus who loved you enough to shed His own blood for you! Confess to Him what needs to be confessed and get moving again!
God’s word is true! Whether God’s word sounded ‘good’ to the people (or not), His word is always true. We are to receive His word, believe it, and speak it…because the things God says, He means.

By no means did Jeremiah have an easy message! His task was to proclaim God’s judgment to the people day-in and day-out…to preach so much to the point that no one could ignore it. They needed to hear about God’s judgment, so they would turn to God in sincere repentance. That message is still needed today, and we are the ones to deliver it to all the world. May we be faithful to do so as we rely on the power of the Holy Spirit!

Hezekiah was a true man of faith…but he wasn’t perfect. He was also known to fumble a time or two. When staring down the threat of an invading Assyrian army, Hezekiah fell back on the faith he had in God, the faith he maintained all his life. Yet when presented with the potential for a bit of pride, Hezekiah (like a lot of us) fumbled the ball. Earlier in Chapter 3, Paul exhorted the Colossians to take off the clothes of the old man (the old worldly ways), because we are now identified with Jesus in His new life. God rules them all, for He is the all-powerful God and King.

In Colossians 2, Paul wrote of both his desires for the Colossian church as well as his warnings about spiritual dangers facing them. He wanted to see the Colossians avoid spiritual shipwreck and the way to do it was to steadfastly abide in Jesus. They weren’t to trade Him for anything! The more they grew in their knowledge of Christ, the more they would be amazed by Him, captivated by Him. The more they looked at Jesus, the less appealing the world would become.

Why do we need to see the preeminence of Jesus, to recognize Him as God? Because He is! This is the very thing that Colossians 1:15-18 addresses. In all of those roles, there is a common thread: He is truly God.

Isaiah was clearly overwhelmed by the holiness of God as well as the reality of his own sin. But once his sin was addressed, he found himself free and willing to serve the King of kings Who had a sobering message for Isaiah to deliver to the people. God has given us a similar message to pronounce to the people around us. Might they shut their ears? Sure. But the good news of Jesus still needs to be told to them…and we are the ones to tell them.

1 Kings 8 highlights the prayer of Solomon, with his repeated acknowledgement that God’s people would sin, while also repeatedly praying that God would hear His people’s prayers when they confessed their sin and repented. Solomon understood that Israel had an ongoing need for forgiveness and their only hope for forgiveness was the mercy and kindness of God. So too, with us.

Why is there so much detailed information about the design of Solomon’s temple? Simple: to leave the worshipper in awe of the God of Israel, realizing that it was only by God’s grace that He dwelt among them and made it possible for them to worship. In his final charge to Solomon, David exhorted his son to act in righteousness, bravely walking according to God’s word as he executed wise judgment on the lawbreakers. For as much as Paul loved the Christians in the Galatian churches, he was concerned for them due to the evidence of potential false conversion among them. Galatians 4:8-20, “Gospel Assurance”
Are you saved? Truly, there is no question of greater importance. Are you saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ? Have you recognized your sin as being grievous offenses against the holy God, and turned from it to flee to Jesus as your loving Savior? Do you fully trust in Jesus as being the Son of God who died on the cross for your sins, rising from the grave? If you can truthfully answer “yes,” then you are gloriously free from the wrath of God, free from death, free to know God, love Him, and live with Him forever. It not, you are still enslaved to sin and this world, destined to face God’s righteous wrath and eternal judgment in hell. That is not what God desires for you; He desires for you to be saved, so be saved through faith in Jesus Christ!
Such is the basic message of the gospel, the good news of Jesus that all Christians believe and to which we cling. Yet what about people who once profess that message who now reject it? What about people who “deconstruct” their faith, discounting and disbelieving everything that doesn’t agree with them? (A terrible movement becoming increasingly popular today.) Is it even possible for those who once professed freedom in Christ to profess it no longer?
The answer is a sad yes. There have been many people who once claimed to be born-again Christians who later rejected the claim, people who once claimed faith in the Biblical gospel that later rejected it or replaced it. Instead of believing in salvation through faith alone in Jesus alone, they either believe in nothing or a false gospel of works. It is Jesus+ their church, Jesus+ their Bible translation, Jesus+ social works, etc. They have left the Biblical gospel for “church-ified” legalism, cloaking self-centered idolatry in the veil of religion.
This is the joint issue of apostasy and false conversion. It is tragically common today and it was just such people that Paul feared would be found among the Galatian churches. This was what he was combatting as he repeatedly countered the false divisive teachers of Judaizing legalism.
Paul addressed some of this head-on in Chapter 3 when re-visiting some of the foundational truths of the Biblical gospel. He wrote how God justifies us through faith in Jesus, how God gives us the Holy Spirit through faith in Jesus, and how God makes us His sons and heirs through faith in Jesus. Everything we have with God is through faith in Christ, not through slavish obedience to the law. It isn’t that the law is bad, but it has a certain design. It was not designed by God to justify us but to condemn us. It demonstrates to us our transgressions, chastises us for our sin, and drives us to Jesus as our Savior. Though the law cannot save us, God uses it to take us to Jesus who can.
Once we are saved, we are made sons. Each of us, regardless of our sex or status, are given an equal inheritance in Christ. We are made God’s full-heirs, sharing in all the blessings of Abraham through Abraham’s Seed (Jesus). As heirs, we have glorious freedom and privileges through faith, not only for the eternal future but also in the present as we have the freedom to know God as our Abba Father.
These are wonderful truths for believers! But what if you aren’t really a believer? What if your claim to Christ was pretended and insincere? This was Paul’s fear for the Galatian churches. They identified themselves as Christians, but were they? As we see in our own twisted culture, people can label themselves all kinds of ways, but it doesn’t make it true.
How important it is for us to examine our own hearts and ensure we are in the faith! May God guard us from our own pride, the times we would place our trust in ourselves rather than in Christ alone. May our hearts be ever humble before God that we would be zealous for Christ!
Galatians 4:8–20
- Potential evidence of false conversion (8-11). Where is your trust?
8 But then, indeed, when you did not know God, you served those which by nature are not gods.
- If it seems that Paul is picking up in the middle of a thought, that is because he is. At least, he presents a contrast to an earlier idea that he posed back in vv6-7. There, he wrote “because you are sons,” evidenced by the Spirit of God in them (among other things). Sons of God know God intimately, as our Abba Father (“Daddy,” “Dearest Father”). That is what we as Christians are now, but that is not what we always were. Specifically for the Galatians, Paul knew that there was a point in time that they “did not know God” and that they engaged in the actions of idolaters. They “served those which by nature are not gods.”
- All false gods are, in fact, not There are many beings worshipped the world over, but there is only one true God, YHWH God. The Creator God who gave His promise to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; the God who revealed Himself in the burning bush and in power on Mt Sinai to Moses; the God who led the children of Israel through the wilderness, etc.; that God is the real God, the only God. That God is the same God revealed to us by Jesus Christ, to the point that when we look at Jesus we see the Father (Jn 14:9). Anything and everything else is either imaginary or demonic. There is no other option. Allah of Islam is not a god. The deity of the Jehovah Witnesses, likewise that of the Mormons is not God. The version of God they claim to worship is a corruption of the true God revealed in the pages of Scripture. If it is not the God of the Bible, it is not a god; it is an idol. Those who worship those things are, by definition, idolaters.
- What the Galatians were, we all were prior to Christ. We were idolaters. This is true of everyone prior to faith. Even Abram was a pagan idolater before God revealed Himself, as Abram like his father Terah worshipped the same false gods as the rest of those in Babylon (Josh 24:2). We were no different, regardless of what religion we did/didn’t follow. Even atheists are idolaters as they worship themselves and/or their own intellects.
9 But now after you have known God, or rather are known by God, how is it that you turn again to the weak and beggarly elements, to which you desire again to be in bondage?
- Paul writes of the incongruency of their actions, how the Galatians were returning to slavish bondage of past legalism.
- Before we look at actions of the Galatians, look first at their implied testimony. They claimed to “have known God,” and indeed, that was Paul’s experience with them. When he was present with them, preaching the gospel to them, it seemed that they knew the Lord. Or better yet (as Paul even seems to correct himself), they were “known by God.” – Consider for a moment the privilege of that statement! As Christians, we are known by God. He not only knows of us; He knows Obviously, the omniscient God knows all people everywhere. He knows every hair on our heads and every molecule in our makeup. This is true of both His children and those opposed to Him. The distinction made by Paul is that God knows us as His children. God knows us as His own. Through His Son Jesus Christ, God knows us and recognizes us also as His sons. Jesus taught the same thing (though from a different perspective) when warning the people in Judea about the possibility of their own false conversion or false faith. Matthew 7:21–23, “(21) “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. (22) Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ (23) And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’” What makes the difference between those who are received by Christ and those who are rejected? Whether they do the will of the Father in heaven; whether they are known by Jesus. “Depart from Me, I never knew you,” does not mean that Jesus was ignorant of the person’s identity; it means that Jesus did not know that person as belonging to Him. Yet this is what Paul assures those who truly have faith in Jesus as Lord and Savior, who have been made sons of God: we “are known by God.” How glorious! What assurance we have in Him!
- Despite all that, the Galatians went backwards. Although they were seemingly known by God, they did not find their sufficiency in God. Instead, they turned to the “weak and beggarly elements,” seemingly desiring “to be in bondage.” Instead of rejoicing in the freedom that comes with belonging to Christ, they thought it better to be in slavish bondage to far weaker, insufficient elements. Be it demonism, legalism, or faithlessness, the end result was the same: they were turning away from God to embrace the stuff of this world. — Here’s the problem in Paul’s mind: Does that sound like the actions of those who are saved? The man that is assured of safe travel in an airplane does not randomly decide to jump out without a parachute. Something in that case is terribly wrong. Either something is wrong with the plane, or something is wrong with the man’s confidence in the pilot. Whatever the issue, there is a foundational problem. Such was the case with the Galatians. They supposedly had life and freedom in a real relationship with the living God through the resurrected Christ. How could they turn away from Jesus to long once again for bondage? Why would true born-again Christians, certain of their full salvation in Christ, seek to weaker insufficient things to hopefully ‘complete’ their salvation? Why would they act as if they had no assurance that what Jesus did was sufficient at all? This indicated a foundational problem with their trust, and it caused warning sirens to sound for Paul.
- Such lack of assurance ought to cause warning sirens for us, too! It is one thing for Christians to have questions about eternity, along with the occasional doubt. Those are common experiences and thoughts, although they are not where we want to remain. It is another for someone who claims to be a Christian to continually act as if he/she has no hope in Christ. If you find yourself always thinking that Jesus is not enough to save, then it might be a warning sign that you have never surrendered yourself to Jesus to be Consider whom it is of which we speak: Christ Jesus the Lord! If somehow He is incapable, do we honestly think we could do better? Perish the thought! Jesus is our only hope. That is a truth we need to earnestly believe.
10 You observe days and months and seasons and years.
- Knowing that the overall context of the letter is Paul’s opposition to the Judaizing legalists, the reference is clear. The Galatians were observing the Jewish calendar of feasts. This was how they sought to assure themselves that they were ‘good’ Christians. Maybe they hadn’t yet been circumcised and fully converted to Judaism, but they were doing as much as they could when following the Hebrew calendar. Be it the weekly Sabbaths or the annual feasts of Passover, Tabernacles, etc., if it was in the Hebrew calendar, they desired to celebrate it. In fact, notice the use of the present tense. This wasn’t something that the Galatians were considering; it was something they were already Such was the influence of the Judaizers among them. It caused them to veer from the simple gospel of faith in a shockingly short period of time.
- Keep in mind that the ancient divisiveness of Judaizing is not dead today. Many teach the supposed importance of Gentile Christians observing the Hebrew feasts, be it from otherwise well-meaning Christians to outright false teachers. The idea is that unless a person celebrates the Old Testament feasts according to the Hebrew calendar, that person will never know the fullness of the faith. Those who keep the Sabbath and various feasts supposedly know God in a deeper way than those who do not. Not so! The only description that the New Testament has for such teaching is Judaizing heresy, legalistic bondage. Let us acknowledge this doctrine for what it is: false.
- Does this mean that it is sinful or foolish for New Testament Christians to celebrate the feasts? Remember that nearly all the initial church and 100% of Jesus’ apostles were Jewish (along with Jesus Himself!). That they observed the Hebrew feasts is beyond dispute, being certain. Likewise, any Jewish man or woman who comes to faith in Jesus (Yeshua) as Messiah will likely continue to observe the feasts, albeit through new eyes of faith and understanding. Even Gentile Christians can celebrate the Hebrew feasts in joyful worship. The problem arises when it is taught that Gentile Christians must celebrate the feasts. That is the point that it turns from joy to bondage, from celebration to legalism.
11 I am afraid for you, lest I have labored for you in vain.
- Considering how often the Bible exhorts us not to fear, it is notable that Paul feared for this congregation! For good reason! With their sudden turn to, and embrace of Hebraic traditions and laws, it was a clear departure from the simple gospel he taught to them. It made Paul afraid that everything he did and taught among the Galatians had been “in vain,” that his toil/labor had been wasted effort. In short, he was concerned for their salvation, that their profession of faith had been little but false conversion.
- Question: Was Paul being dramatic? Was this hyperbole? This was sincere concern from someone who knew the true dangers of legalism. Remember that Paul the apostle was once Saul the Pharisee. If anyone knew the ins/outs of Jewish tradition, it was Paul. He remembered how he once thought himself totally justified in his legal obedience. By the standard of his culture, he considered himself blameless concerning the righteousness found in the law (Phil 3:6). And he maintained that view up till the very moment of his conversion. It wasn’t as if Paul had a gradual awakening to his need for Christ. While he was still breathing threats of murder on the road to Damascus hoping to find and imprison Christians, he still considered himself righteous. It wasn’t until the second that Jesus blinded him with glory that Paul understood his own sin and need for grace. Yet it was to that previous state of Paul’s, that the Galatians longed. They sought to hold themselves to that unrighteous, legalistic standard. It was as if Paul’s whole testimony for Jesus was going in reverse. No wonder he feared that his work among the Galatians had been in vain!
The evidence for potential false conversion was among the Galatians, and it shook Paul to his core. He feared for them, that they might not be saved as it seemed their trust was in their faithfulness to feast days, rather than Jesus’ faithful and completed work on the cross. If the Galatians left Christ, what hope did they have? None.
Where is your trust? Do you hope to prove yourself to God? “If I can just do better, if I can just pull myself up by my bootstraps a little more, everything will be alright.” “If I just repeat this prayer a few more times, if I take communion a bit more often, everything will be alright.” “If I just…” There will always be more things that can be done. Granted, there are some things that should be done. After all, we could all spend more time in prayer and reading our Bible and sharing our faith. But when it comes to salvation, our trust is not in those things and can never be! Our trust can only be in Jesus. Everything we do for Jesus needs to flow from our faith in Jesus. If we get that backwards, it is potential evidence of false conversion, that we never understood it right in the first place.
- Paul’s past relationship with the Galatians (12-16). What is your testimony?
12 Brethren, I urge you to become like me, for I became like you. You have not injured me at all.
- Before we get to the main idea of the verse, don’t miss the silver lining of hope that Paul held out for this church. Though he feared for their salvation and the potential of his wasted effort among them, he was not yet fully convinced of their apostasy. Notice he still referred to them as “” In his mind, they were still his brothers and sisters in the Lord.
- Isn’t it good news that God doesn’t give up on us as easily as we might give up on Him? We might get confused from time to time, or get turned upside down with legalistic ideas, but it doesn’t automatically make us outright apostates. Any one of us might be prone to deception from time to time. Let us hold out hope for those who are confused, that their confusion is only temporary, that they are still true brothers and sisters!
- Hopefully, these were still brothers, but that didn’t stop Paul from bringing correction. After all, correction was needed! As the apostle to the Gentiles, Paul was just the guy to do it. What did he say? “I urge you to become like me.” Not too many of us would feel comfortable giving similar advice! Thankfully, Paul’s lifestyle with Christ was consistent enough for him to tell others, “Imitate me as I imitate Christ,” (1 Cor 11:1), knowing that ultimately men and women would be following after Jesus Himself. Of course, the context for the Galatians was a bit different. Instead of talking about discipleship, he referred to cultural customs. For all that the Judaizers had done to convince these Gentile Galatians to become like the Jews, Paul appealed to them for the opposite. Paul had become like the Gentiles (to an extent), and the Gentile Christians could do what he did.
- In fact, he already demonstrated an example of this when he initially lived with them preaching the gospel. Though he was a faithful Jewish believer in Jesus, when the apostle to the Gentiles was among the Gentiles, he basically lived as a Gentile. He did not emphasize his Hebrew customs, dress, or kosher diet while ministering in Gentile lands. And all of this, he did without “injury.” Paul wrote of the same concept to the Corinthians: 1 Corinthians 9:20–22, “(20) and to the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might win Jews; to those who are under the law, as under the law, that I might win those who are under the law; (21) to those who are without law, as without law (not being without law toward God, but under law toward Christ), that I might win those who are without law; (22) to the weak I became as weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.” In the context of Corinth, Paul did this to ensure he let nothing get in the way of the simple gospel of Christ. He didn’t want a Jewish man tripping over his comfort with the Gentiles or vice-versa. Paul didn’t want people looking at Paul; he wanted them looking at Jesus. To the Galatians, he reminds them of this same practice of his, but from a different perspective. During the times that Paul wasn’t emphasizing his Jewishness, he didn’t experience any harm. It didn’t hurt his walk with Jesus to eat different foods or to enter the homes of Gentiles. All those things were fine, as long as his faith was in Jesus alone. – The true danger/injury would be departing from faith in Christ!
- This is the irony of religious legalism. Instead of strengthening our relationship with God, it injures it. It makes us weaker in our faith. We end up putting obstacles between us and Jesus, causing us to rely more on the obstacles than on Christ Himself. Consider what happens with physical injuries. When your arm remains in a cast for 6+ weeks, does your muscle get stronger or weaker? When you start to rely on spiritual crutches, does your faith get stronger or weaker? Weaker. Those who teach legalism want to impose lifelong crutches for Christians. We don’t want the crutch; we want Christ!
13 You know that because of physical infirmity I preached the gospel to you at the first. 14 And my trial which was in my flesh you did not despise or reject, but you received me as an angel of God, even as Christ Jesus.
- When Paul first arrived in the Galatian region, he didn’t have it easy. In fact, he preached to them while experiencing physical difficulties, having some form of “infirmity.” What was the issue? We don’t know, although theories abound. Some suspect this was a reference to an issue with Paul’s eyes (something perhaps alluded to in v15, as well as 6:11). Others suggest that perhaps Paul suffered a bout with malaria prior to ministering among the Galatians. A third theory is that Paul referred to injuries resulting from persecution and stoning (Acts 14:19). In all the debate, there is more heat than light. There is little to be gained from all the speculation. The original Galatian Christians reading Paul’s letter knew exactly what he meant. That is enough. We don’t need to know the details of Paul’s physical suffering; it is the fact of his suffering and the Galatians’ love and care for him to which we need to pay attention.
- BTW: Whose trial was this? Depending on the Bible translation, v14 either reads “my trial,” or “trial to you.” Was it Paul’s trial or the trial of the Galatians? Manuscripts vary, with some saying “my” and other saying “your,” neither affecting the basic meaning of the verse. Paul’s own physical trials would have been trials for everyone involved with him. After all, they would have had to care for him, enduring everything that he endured. Things that might have seemed minor to the mature apostle Paul would have seemed much larger to the baby Christians brand-new to the faith. Whatever the possessive pronoun, the point remains the same. Whatever was going on in Paul’s life and body, the Galatians gladly received him.
- How much so? They did not treat Paul worse because of his suffering; they welcomed him as one who was blessed of God. That itself was marvelous, as it was not uncommon for people to assume that physical suffering meant that God was displeased with a person. (It wasn’t uncommon then, it wasn’t uncommon with Job, and it still isn’t uncommon today!) Yet the Galatians did not hold to such superstition. They “did not despise or reject” the apostle, but received him as a messenger of God, which he was. Interestingly, the word “angel” can also be translated “messenger,” (the literal meaning of angelos ~ ἄγγελος), but the context is likely that of the supernatural sort of messenger, an angel from heaven. The Galatians afforded Paul as much respect as they would have given Jesus if Christ Himself had arrived. – And rightly so! Paul was an apostle of the Lord Jesus, bearing the gospel of the Lord Jesus telling men and women how they could know and be saved by the Lord Jesus. It is befitting that they would receive him as a human messenger with the respect and attention they would give to the Son of God.
- I wonder how we receive those who bring to us God’s own word, those who act as messengers of the living God? Don’t misunderstand: we bow to no man, for we are to worship God alone! But when the word of the living God is proclaimed, do we receive it as if God Himself speaks it? If not, why not? Does not the Spirit of God testify in our hearts when His inspired Scripture is proclaimed? When God’s word turns our eyes upon Christ, do we not look upon Jesus? How precious should be the times we listen to the proclamation of the Bible! How valuable it should be to us, that it would receive our undivided attention! We should seek to receive it as often as possible, taking advantage of every opportunity to drink in the word of God.
15 What then was the blessing you enjoyed? For I bear you witness that, if possible, you would have plucked out your own eyes and given them to me.
- To pluck out one’s own eyes for the sake of another is intense, to phrase it mildly. When it came to the apostle Paul, the original relationship he had with the Galatian Christians was wonderful. More than giving the apostle the coats off their backs, they were willing to give the eyes out of their sockets! They had so much happiness and joy together with him, the time spent together being truly blessed. There was a unity, a love, a bond between them that seemed to reflect a change within them that could only come from Jesus. There seemed to be a unifying work of the Holy Spirit among them. What happened? What caused it to change?
16 Have I therefore become your enemy because I tell you the truth?
- What happened to cause the change? Earlier, the Galatians trusted Paul implicitly. Now, they treated him as an “” What changed? The Galatians’ willingness to receive the truth. Before, they were willing; now, they were hesitant. This was the danger of legalists entering their camp. By giving ear to people teaching false gospels, they allowed themselves to become confused on what the truth actually was. So much had they been influenced, that they even saw Paul as a potential enemy.
- Truth threatens legalists. Legalists will inevitably find themselves arguing around the truth, finding some convoluted way of convincing you of their point of view. Yet if it was that obvious, you wouldn’t need to be convinced! Anyone can take a Scripture out of context and force a meaning upon it. But natural reading of God’s word in context will always bring us into God’s truth.
Things had changed among the Galatians! They started out with wonderful reception to the gospel, receiving it with joy. Then things changed, to the point they were no longer certain of what gospel truth was.
When confusion creeps in, go back to the first things. What is your testimony? What was it you first believed when you came to faith in Christ? What was your response at that time to the Bible and the truth of God? Go back to those things. As Jesus later chastised the church at Ephesus, they had left their “first love,” (Rev 2:4), so we might need to be reminded of our first love and return to Him in those foundational things. Don’t allow legalism to cloud what is most important. As Alistair Begg is fond of saying, “The main things are the plain things and the plain things are the main things.” Stay to the foundations of the gospel and you will find yourself standing firm.
- Paul’s affection vs. the Judaizers (17-20). For what are you zealous?
17 They zealously court you, but for no good; yes, they want to exclude you, that you may be zealous for them.
- The “they” is an obvious reference to the Judaizers. Paul didn’t have to name them specifically for their identity to be clear. These Judaizers had a zeal for the Galatian Christians, but not in a good way. They had an interest in the Christians, but their interest was self-serving. Their zeal was intended to be reciprocated. They showed such interest in the Galatians because they wanted them to “be zealous” in return. The more zealous the Galatians were for the Judaizers, the more support the Judaizers would receive. Thus, the more the Judaizers imposed their legalistic teaching on the Christians. “Don’t you want to know how you can be truly pleasing to God? I’ve got all the information you need and would be happy to show it to you. Just send your payment to ___.” It was greed, pure and simple. Greed for riches and greed for influence. The Judaizers wanted to make themselves great, with the Galatians merely being a tool to accomplish their goal. The Judaizers were zealous for them alright, but it was an evil zeal.
- How did they try to accomplish this? Through exclusion: “they want to exclude you.” The Greek word is interesting as it is related to the word for “key.” The Judaizers wanted to lock the Galatians away from Paul and other godly teachers. They wanted to lock the Galatians up and lock the others out. Like other cults in the present day, the Judaizers arrived in town preying upon newer Christians, shutting them away from proper Biblical influence. The quicker the Galatians could be isolated, the quicker the Judaizers could gain a foothold in their lives.
- Why? Again, it comes back to greed. It is little wonder so many false teachers put a focus on money and exclusion. The more they can get Christians to cut themselves from other people, the more money the false teachers can squeeze out of them.
18 But it is good to be zealous in a good thing always, and not only when I am present with you.
- Zeal isn’t always bad. Paul was zealous for the Galatians in a good way. He wanted the best for them, not to get rich off them. Granted, Paul was often supported through the financial gifts of the churches but his history clearly demonstrated that he never pushed or pressured anyone for cash. He was willing to work with his own hands, if it meant that the local church would not be burdened. This allowed Paul’s zeal for the churches to be pure. He was zealous for them, that they would be grounded in the gospel of Christ and grow in their faith and love for Jesus. When Paul was zealous, he was “zealous in a good thing.”
- What Paul demonstrated among the Galatians, he desired to see also among the Galatians. Notice that he does not boast in his own zeal for them. It is certainly implied, but it isn’t his main focus. Instead, he teaches them to be zealous in good things, even when he is not “present” with them. He wanted the Galatians to grow in their Christian maturity that they would have the right zeal for the right things. Their growing zeal for Jewish customs and tradition was not the right zeal; they needed a zeal for the gospel.
- What is the right kind of zeal? Our zeal for Christ! Consider the Greatest Commandment: To love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul, and strength. What is that, if not zeal? To love God with your whole being, with all your substance and possessions and intellect and emotion…that is a holy zeal, the grand love to which we are called and commanded. It is Him we should seek with all that we have, that we would learn of Him, yearn for Him, desire to worship Him fully in spirit and truth.
- Interestingly, the word for “zealous” can also be translated “jealous” in other contexts. And what does the Bible say of God? He is a jealous God (Exo 20:5, 34:14, et al). Not only is God jealous for His own holiness, we might say that He is jealous/zealous for us. It is only right for us to be zealous for Him! – Do you have this kind of zeal for God? If not, why not? May God kindle it within us anew!
19 My little children, for whom I labor in birth again until Christ is formed in you, 20 I would like to be present with you now and to change my tone; for I have doubts about you.
- Again, we need to note how the apostle hadn’t given up on these churches. The phrase “my little children” shows Paul’s ongoing love and hope for them. He didn’t give up on them. Until he saw Christ in them, the work of evangelism was not yet complete.
- His steadfast hope for them was illustrated in parental love. Paul labored as a mother for them. Already, he birthed them once when first preaching the gospel to them. Apparently, the labor pangs weren’t yet over. Potentially, it had been false labor the first time. There was still work to be done in them.
- Even so, Paul had doubts about them. He was perplexed, lost as to what to think about them and what to do with them. Although he hoped and longed for the best, he feared for their salvation. As long as he wrote with pen and ink from afar, his doubts would remain. He needed “to be present” among them and see them for himself. Hopefully, when he arrived, he would be able to bear testimony to a good and godly zeal for Christ. Yet for now, he doubted and wondered about them.
Conclusion:
Paul was concerned about these churches, for good reason! There was evidence among them of false conversion being that their trust was found in their religious observances rather than Jesus, their attitude towards the apostle and his preached gospel had changed, and that their zeal and loyalty for Jesus was becoming sketchy. Either the men and women in these churches had been false converts from the start or they were quickly on the slide to apostasy. Neither option was good! Paul truly loved these people and he not only wanted to know that they were soundly saved, but he wanted them to know whether they were soundly saved. It does no one any good to find assurance in false professions; we need faith in the true Christ to be truly saved.
For all the theological debate that rages over eternal security (i.e., Can a person lose his/her salvation?), what often gets lost is the New Testament focus on present assurance. We are often so concerned with whether we might do something terrible in the future that causes us to lose what God graciously gives us – or overly confident in past words spoken by a loved one, who later shows zero interest in Christ – that we forget to look at the issue of assurance the way the New Testament teaches us to look at it. The basic question is simple: Are you in Christ? What is your relationship with Him right now? Are you abiding in Him – do you trust Him – are you zealous for Him right now in the present? We can say with Biblical confidence that our salvation is secure in Christ. Thus, the Biblical application to that is to be in Christ. We neither give ourselves future permission to sin without remorse, nor do we rely on past human works and words to give assurance of what only Christ can give. Our assurance is in Him alone.
The apostle Paul feared for the Galatians because it seemed they no longer relied on Christ. Although he hoped the best for them, he had legitimate doubts whether they were truly saved. Paul had similar doubts with the church at Corinth, and he explicitly called upon them to do something about it. 2 Corinthians 13:5, “Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you are disqualified.” No doubt the same exhortation could have been given to the Galatians. It can also be given to us. Examine yourself! Double-check that your trust is in Christ alone. In what is your salvation based? It cannot be works, be it faithfulness to the Hebrew feasts or your baptismal certificate or a past repetition of the sinner’s prayer. Do you have a clear testimony of turning to Christ in faith, knowing that you have trusted in Him? Do you still have a zeal and desire for Him today? Nobody can answer these questions for you. It remains between you and God. But you must be able to answer these questions, assured that your abiding hope is in Christ alone. Without that, there is no hope at all. (But that can change!)
Let us also beware the subtle slide into legalism. The Galatians did not veer away from the Biblical gospel overnight. (Thankfully, as otherwise Paul would not have held out hope if they were still brothers and sisters!) The more we entertain legalism, the more it will appeal to us. The more value we place on religious ritual, the more we will seek it out. Let us be intentional to keep our eyes and hope on Jesus alone!
There is only one real choice as king in our lives: the king whom God chooses, which is Christ Jesus. Exalting ourselves to our personal throne is sin and rebellion. Don’t take the throne for yourself; surrender and submit yourself to Christ!

Is God’s law good? What is its purpose? Why did God give it? Paul answers the questions in Galatians 3:19-25. God’s law is designed to take us to God’s Son to receive God’s grace unto God’s glory. The law shows us our sin, that we might look unto Jesus.

For as much as David did, he didn’t do it alone. There were other brothers-in-arms next to him. And God provided for them just as surely as God provided for David. How does God provide for you? He gives grace and power to all His people. Let us serve Jesus in the opportunities He gives us, being empowered by the Holy Spirit to the glory of God!

One of the common pop-definitions of insanity is “to keep trying the same thing, while expecting different results.” That is how many people treat the commands and law found in the Bible. Even though the Bible clearly and repeatedly shows how no one finds God’s forgiveness and goes to heaven through being obedient and doing good works, that is exactly what we try to do. Stop the insanity! Stop trying to prove yourself worthy through good works; believe upon the promises of God in Jesus Christ!

David had his share of battles. Even after the rebellion of Absalom was over, there were other conflicts still to come. Likewise, there will always be battles ahead for each of us. Yet we do not face these battles alone. Our Lord Jesus is with us, empowering us through the Spirit, enabling us to fight these battles for the glory of God.

Seeing so much legalism among the Galatian churches, Paul asked the question: What happened? What changed that the Galatians took their eyes off Jesus? The gospel hadn’t changed. The Bible had always shown that salvation comes through faith alone. The Galatians (and all of us) needed to simply have faith in Jesus.

When David and Absalom went to war, poor decision was made after poor decision due to so many people reacting in their flesh. When flesh fights flesh, everyone loses. The flesh can only be fought in the Spirit, when we humble ourselves to our Lord Jesus and follow Him.

As Paul wrote of his personal history to the Galatians, he demonstrated that just as the Galatians experienced, he too found opposition from those who desired to compromise the gospel. Yet the apostle Paul and the rest of the apostles in Jerusalem refused. He knew the truth, guarded the truth, and preached the truth. Don’t compromise the gospel! Contend earnestly for the faith.
