In this episode of our AI-focused season, SHIFTERLABS uses Google LM to unravel the groundbreaking research “How AI and Human Behaviors Shape Psychosocial Effects of Chatbot Use: A Longitudinal Randomized Controlled Study”conducted by researchers from the MIT Media Lab and OpenAI.
Over a span of 28 days and 300,000+ messages exchanged, 981 participants were immersed in conversations with ChatGPT across various modalities—text, neutral voice, and emotionally engaging voice. The study examined the psychological and social consequences of daily AI chatbot interactions, investigating outcomes like loneliness, social withdrawal, emotional dependence, and problematic usage patterns.
The findings are both fascinating and alarming. While chatbots showed initial benefits—especially voice-based ones—in alleviating loneliness, prolonged and emotionally charged interactions led to increased dependence and reduced real-life socialization. The study identifies vulnerable user patterns, highlights how design decisions and user behavior intertwine, and underscores the urgent need for psychosocial guardrails in AI systems.

In this episode, I had a great chat with Tenesha the WordSmith. Tenesha loves poetry and music and is a special education teacher. She began writing poetry in elementary school when a teacher gave her a journal and the summer homework assignment to write. Tenesha grew up in Oakland, Ca. and has performed with performance artist groups Her Temple Monologues and Urban Guerilla Theatre. Tenesha performed at Glastonbury and Love Supreme in 2019. She is signed to On The Corner Records. Dj Khalab produced her powerful, soulful spoken word album Peacocks & Other Savage Beasts which we discuss in this episode. In this new episode of Ivancast Podcast, I had an amazing chat with Pedro Reynolds Cuellar. Pedro is a Colombian Doctoral student in the Center for Civic Media at MIT. He started studying Linguistics in Colombia, then travelled around South America and Africa as part of his job. He did a Masters degree with the Personal Robots group at MIT's Media Lab where he focused on designing mechanisms to foster children's socio-emotional skills such as empathy, through interactions with social robots. We had a blast talking about the Tonight Show, SNL, The Tom Green Show, Jackass, Dave Chappelle, Joe Rogan, Eddie Griffin etc. We even remembered Andy Kaufman and movies like The King of Comedy and Freddy got fingered.
