Today’s podcast starts with a discussion of the Law of Unintended Consequences. There is a pithy statement from the Old Testament that exemplifies this principle:
“For they sow the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind.” (Hosea 8:7)
We also discussed reaction to Biden’s statement about Taiwan (PRC vs. ROC), which I think was a bit sensationalized. Perhaps it wasn’t the best, but it also wasn’t that bad, and I agree with Gingrich that it should not have been walked back. Coincidentally, today is the anniversary of Tiananmen, which is not mentioned at all on the mainland, but used to be commemorated in Hong Kong. I do not talk about that event in this podcast, because I have addressed it elsewhere.

More and more we are coming to realize that something must be done about the ease with which young people can access semi-automatic weapons. It is pure insanity to allow 17 and 18 year old young people to carry around a semi-automatic weapon without any supervision. Americans are being forced into the realization that guns DO kill people.

The way I have heard it expressed in China is, "History has never been kind to an emperor who wages war without an honest justification." Several weeks ago, I had a most interesting conversation with Snow's grandmother. The logistics of the thing were a little tricky, because the kind lady did not really speak Mandarin, and certainly not English. But Snow speaks Mandarin, English, her native dialect, Baihua (Beihai area dialect) as well as Cantonese, so she was well able to interpret for me. As the story develops, and we hear about how Snow was adopted, the role of mother and grandmother tend to merge. Snow refers to her as her grandmother, but although Snow was adopted and became part of a peasant family, it was this lady herself who nurtured Snow as an infant.

This episode introduces Snow and Fly, a couple young people I met in Beihai. Snow is very interested in English, and really quite good at it, if you consider her background as a poor country kid from the rural area where absolutely nobody speaks English. Snow does not come from a Christian background at all, but she dragged her classmate along to church, probably in hopes of meeting a foreigner. You will enjoy her warm, engaging personality.

Chinese young people talking about what Chinese people believe. There seems to be some ambivalence about this. One young lady said, "I believe in myself." This prompted a discussion started by a man in the group who saw this as an evidence of the current spiritual vacuum in China. Very interesting, warm discussion.
