Walking In Place: Recent Episodes

Walking in Place is a series of audio walking tours that you can listen to from your podcast app. Whether you use it as a self-guided in-person tour or you’re lying on your couch staring at the ceiling, the goal is that it’s a calming, interesting and maybe even fun experience.
**Happy almost Pride!
It’s the perfect time of year to experience the streets of Toronto’s Church-Wellesley Village, often called “The Village” or Toronto’s “Gay Village”. This tour is rich with the LGBTQIA2S+ history of both Toronto and Canada, with stories covering former village inhabitants, activists, businesses, and more. Naturally, we also learn a lot about the historic buildings in the village, including some that are under threat.
This episode is a collaboration with Adam Wynne, a community historian and the historian for the Church-Wellesley Neighbourhood Association. This area tells the story of the early poor and working class immigrant populations of Toronto (shout out to the Irish and Macedonian communities). We also learn about the underground railroad, unmarked graves (of humans and, technically, pigs) and talk about making the city beautiful and functional without sneakily demolishing heritage buildings. It’s December, and I’m trying to get myself to like winter. This month, that means taking “festive” walks. Mostly in areas that look pretty at this time of year, but there are a few stops here and there that are a little bit more on theme. That being said- if you happen to listen to this any other time of year, it should hopefully still be an interesting and fun walk/listen!
