Bradley Anderson has dedicated much of his life to preserving and teaching the traditional Japanese martial arts, following a path that took him from rural Minnesota to the training halls of Japan and back again.

Growing up in Hawley, Minnesota, Bradley developed an early interest in martial arts that eventually led him halfway around the world. He spent 11 years living and working in Japan, immersing himself in the country’s culture while training extensively in Kendo and Iaido under respected Japanese instructors. Through years of dedicated study, he overcame language barriers, embraced the discipline and attention to detail demanded by these centuries-old arts, and earned the rank of 4th-degree black belt in Iaido.

Following his return to the United States, Bradley founded Agassiz Dojo with the mission of preserving and sharing the traditions of Japanese swordsmanship. What began in Moorhead has grown into a thriving martial arts community and recently expanded into a dedicated dojo in West Fargo, providing practitioners with a permanent home for the study of Kendo, Iaido, and Jodo. Today, it is believed to be the only school of its kind in the region devoted exclusively to traditional Japanese weapons arts.

Before martial arts changed his life, Jerry Trimble was a shy, anxious teenager who struggled with bullying, fear, and self-doubt. What began as a search for confidence at the age of 13 became the foundation for one of the most remarkable careers in martial arts history.

Nicknamed the “Golden Boy,” Jerry quickly rose through the ranks, earning his first-degree black belt at just 15 years old and becoming the top-ranked point fighter in the Midwest. His speed, athleticism, and dynamic kicking ability propelled him into professional kickboxing, where he captured multiple regional and national championships before reaching the pinnacle of the sport in 1986 as both the PKA and PKC Kickboxing World Champion. His legendary hook kick was once clocked at an incredible 118 miles per hour, cementing his reputation as one of the most exciting fighters of his generation.

Following his competitive career, Jerry successfully transitioned to Hollywood, building an acting résumé that spans more than 65 films and television appearances. From sharing the screen with Al Pacino and Robert De Niro in Heat to roles in Charlie’s Angels, The Flash, Supernatural, iZombie, Tracker, and many other productions, he has demonstrated the same drive and determination that made him a world champion.

Today, Jerry travels throughout the United States and Canada as a motivational speaker, encouraging young people to overcome fear, embrace challenges, and believe in their own potential. Marc MacYoung has spent a lifetime studying violence, not as a sport or a theory, but as a reality. A longtime martial artist, security professional, author, and educator, his unique perspective was shaped by growing up in gang-infested neighborhoods of Los Angeles, where understanding violence was often a matter of survival rather than choice.

His experiences in bodyguarding, bouncing, and event security further reinforced the lessons he learned on the streets, leading him to question conventional wisdom about self-defense and martial arts. Instead of searching for a single “best” style, Marc became fascinated with understanding what works, when it works, and why. That philosophy eventually evolved into what he calls “Martial Mechanics,” a framework for analyzing how techniques function under different circumstances and in real-world environments.

Over the decades, Marc has become one of the leading voices on violence dynamics, conflict management, and self-protection. His work extends far beyond physical techniques, exploring the psychology of violence, threat assessment, de-escalation, communication, and the legal realities surrounding self-defense. Through his books, lectures, and expert witness testimony, he has challenged countless misconceptions about personal safety and the true nature of violent encounters.

The author of more than 25 nonfiction books, Marc has shared his expertise with martial artists, law enforcement, military personnel, universities, and government agencies around the world. Today, while semi-retired due to health considerations and his wife’s disability, he has turned much of his creative energy toward writing fiction, bringing the same depth of experience and insight to a new genre.

Dave first stepped onto the mat in 1967 at just eight years old, beginning his training in Judo before finding his true home in Kenpo Karate under the instruction of Paul Dye. What makes his story especially unique is his unwavering loyalty to his teacher. From his first day of Kenpo training in 1972 through every rank advancement, including testing for both brown belt and black belt under the legendary Ed Parker, Paul Dye has remained his only instructor.

When Dave Hebler’s school closed due to Hebler’s growing responsibilities as a personal bodyguard for Elvis Presley, training continued in Paul Dye’s now-famous garage dojo. That humble training space became the foundation for a remarkable martial arts career that continues to this day.

As a competitor, Dave built an impressive tournament résumé, capturing eight consecutive Long Beach Internationals Self-Defense Championships, earning multiple national titles, and winning championships in the United Kingdom in fighting, kata, and self-defense competition.

In 1986, he began teaching out of his own garage dojo, where he has spent decades developing students and preserving the traditions of Kenpo Karate. His commitment to quality instruction has produced numerous black belts and positively impacted generations of martial artists.

Beyond the dojo, Dave built successful careers as a butcher, meat manager, and later as a safety consultant in the offshore oil industry. He is also a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather whose life has been guided by faith, family, and martial arts.

When he’s not teaching or working, he enjoys spending time with his family at their river house along the Colorado River. Whether boating, riding Sea-Doos, exploring the desert in a sandrail or his trusty 1999 Toyota 4Runner, fishing, or simply gathering around a late-night fire pit, the river is where family and relaxation come together.

More than fifty years after beginning his journey, Dave continues to train, teach, and inspire others while carrying forward the lessons passed down from his instructor and the legacy of Ed Parker’s Kenpo Karate.

Please join me in welcoming Dave Thompson.

My guest today is Canadian self-defense instructor, author, and speaker Randy King, a leading voice in practical, real world personal safety.

Randy teaches a timeline-based approach to self-defense that prioritizes awareness, decision-making, and avoiding violence whenever possible, with effective physical skills used only as a last resort. Known for his direct style and myth busting perspective, he trains civilians and professionals to better understand violence and make safer choices before, during, and after an encounter.

His path into this work was anything but theoretical. My guest today is a lifelong martial artist whose journey reflects the full spectrum of what martial arts training really looks like, the challenges, the growth, and the long-term commitment required to stay on the path.

Jim Ockington began training more than 35 years ago, navigating early setbacks, demanding black belt tests, and years of competition that helped shape both his skills and his perspective. Over time, he grew into a leader on and off the mat, running competition teams, leading sparring classes, and serving as a primary instructor for both adult and teen programs.

His background spans multiple disciplines, including World Taekwondo, ITF Taekwondo, Hapkido, and Bill “Superfoot” Wallace’s system. Along the way, he trained directly under, and often alongside, some of the most respected names in the martial arts world. That exposure to high-level instruction, cross-training, and large-scale tournaments helped shape a well-rounded, experience-driven approach to martial arts.

Today, Jim continues to train and teach daily, sharing his knowledge with students ranging from lifelong practitioners to those discovering martial arts later in life, proving that training is not about age, but about mindset.

A multiple-time Martial Arts Hall of Fame inductee, his story is one of persistence, adaptability, and staying connected to the art for a lifetime.

Please welcome my guest today, Jim Ockington.

Arlene Limas is a pioneering martial artist and leader whose career has helped reshape combat sports, self-defense, and personal empowerment.

She began training at just five years old in Shaolin kung fu before transitioning to tae kwon do, where she quickly rose to the highest levels of international competition. In 1988, at the Seoul Olympic Games, she made history — becoming the first American and the first woman to win an Olympic gold medal in tae kwon do as the sport made its Olympic debut.

Over the course of her competitive career, Arlene earned national titles, Pan-American titles, World University honors, and World Championship golds. She was later inducted into the Tae Kwon Do Hall of Fame and recognized as one of the greatest taekwondo athletes of the 20th century.

After retiring from elite competition, she turned her focus toward leadership, mentorship, and advocacy. She opened her own martial arts school, breaking barriers for women in instruction and leadership roles, and continued championing empowerment through training.

Today, she serves as the CEO of PAVE Prevention, where she works with organizations to promote personal safety, healthier workplace culture, and empowered performance through evidence-based, trauma-informed programs.

In this episode, we talk about Olympic history, breaking barriers, leadership beyond the mat, and how martial arts can be a vehicle for lasting cultural change.

My guest today is Professor Gabe Reynaga, a lifelong martial artist whose journey began at just nine years old, and more than four decades later, he’s still competing, teaching, and making history.

By the age of seventeen, Gabe was already competing at the adult level, quickly rising to the top of the sport karate world and earning four world titles. At just twenty years old, he joined the legendary Paul Mitchell Karate Team, one of the most elite teams in martial arts, and opened his first karate school that same year. Under his leadership, his students went on to capture multiple international championships.

He earned his 4th degree black belt in karate and was later inducted into the International Martial Arts Hall of Fame by Chuck Norris himself. Widely regarded as one of the greatest sport karate competitors of all time, his accomplishments alone would secure his legacy, but his journey was far from over.

In 2009, he expanded into MMA and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Between 2012 and 2014, he stepped into the cage for three professional MMA bouts, winning his final fight by first-round TKO in just 45 seconds… at the age of 42.

As his jiu-jitsu career progressed, he became a dominant force on the IBJJF circuit. From blue belt onward, he claimed title after title across Texas. At purple belt, he won both his weight class and the open division. In 2017, he earned his brown belt and immediately made history, winning gold at his first Pan American Championship, followed by another gold at Master’s Worlds later that same year. He was awarded his black belt on the podium.

As a black belt, he continued to excel on the world stage, earning gold in his division, a No-Gi World bronze medal, and a Pan American silver.

His career spans decades, disciplines, and continents, and his impact on martial arts continues to grow.

Please welcome to the show – Gabe Reynaga!

My guest today is a lifelong martial artist whose journey into self-defense began not with trophies or titles, but with necessity, responsibility, and a deep desire to protect others.

Born in Lafayette, Louisiana in 1987, Addison Plaisance is a true child of the ’90s—raised on Power Rangers, Ninja Turtles, and the belief that real strength comes from discipline, purpose, and service. His childhood was far from easy. Growing up with an abusive older brother, Addison learned early how to de-escalate danger, remain calm under pressure, and shield the people he cared about. Those formative experiences shaped his view of martial arts—not as a tool for dominance, but as a path toward peace and responsibility.

At just 13 years old, Addison began training at Silver Dragon TaeKwonDo Academy in Morgan City, Louisiana under Master Raymond Rutledge and Master Brian Rutledge. There, he learned far more than techniques. Master Ray instilled resilience, humility, and the importance of keeping one’s guard up—physically and spiritually.

By age 18, Addison earned his 1st-degree black belt before heading to Louisiana State University, where he continued training, led the LSU TaeKwonDo club, competed in national qualifiers, and expanded his knowledge through Judo. Along the way, he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences and a Master’s in Plant Pathology.

His career eventually brought him to Fargo, where he managed greenhouses for NDSU and unexpectedly stepped into one of his most meaningful roles—becoming a devoted single father.

Years later, while simply driving around in search of an arcade, fate intervened. Addison and his daughter discovered Red River Traditional TaeKwonDo, and just like that, he found himself back where he belonged—training, assisting, and giving back to the martial arts community.

Today, Addison teaches a dedicated Friday sparring class, not for money or recognition, but because he believes service is the highest calling. As he reminds his students—and himself—the “Do” in TaeKwonDo is the Way: the way we live, the way we serve, and the way we strive to become better human beings.

Please welcome my guest today, Addison Plaisance.

My guest today is a lifelong martial artist whose journey began more than six decades ago and ultimately led him to develop one of the most recognizable branches of American Kenpo in the Midwest.

Sr. Grandmaster Tom Saviano first stepped onto the mats in the mid-1960s, beginning his training in Goju-Shorei Karate before later studying under the legendary Grandmaster John McSweeney, one of Ed Parker’s original black belts and a key figure in bringing Kenpo to the Midwest. Under McSweeney’s guidance, Tom earned his black belt and developed a deep understanding of principle-based, practical self-defense.

In 1984, he founded Saviano’s White Tiger Kenpo Karate in Addison, Illinois. The White Tiger Kenpo system blends the directness of Japanese and Okinawan karate with the fluidity and circular motion of Chinese martial arts. Over the past four decades, Tom has refined this system, promoted generations of black belts, and built a cohesive curriculum known for its efficiency, adaptability, and real-world effectiveness.

Tom has been inducted into multiple Martial Arts Halls of Fame and has led countless seminars while cultivating a community rooted in discipline, respect, and personal growth. What began in a small training space has grown into a lasting legacy that continues to influence martial artists across the Midwest and beyond.

Beyond the dojo, Tom’s life experience includes work in radio and television, as well as time spent working at a California winery, adding unique perspective to a career defined by learning, adaptability, and service.

Please welcome my guest today, Sr. Grandmaster Tom Saviano.

Today’s guest is a lifelong athlete whose competitive spirit carried him from the wrestling mats of small-town North Dakota to the bright lights of the UFC Octagon.

Chris Tuchscherer was raised in Rugby, North Dakota, where he built his foundation in wrestling, a discipline that would shape not only his athletic career, but his approach to life. After a standout high school run, he continued competing at North Dakota State University before transferring to Minnesota State University Moorhead, where he became a two-time NCAA Division II All-American.

That same relentless drive propelled him into mixed martial arts. Known to fans as “The Crowbar,” Chris became a feared heavyweight with crushing wrestling, unshakable toughness, and a reputation for outworking anyone standing across from him. His impressive professional career earned him a spot on the sport’s biggest stage, where he competed in the UFC against some of the division’s most formidable names.

Beyond the cage, Chris has remained deeply invested in the growth of combat sports in his home state. He founded Crowbar MMA and promoted regional MMA events in North Dakota, events I was lucky enough to be involved with as a judge.

But stepping away from fighting didn’t mean stepping away from competition.

Staying true to his blue-collar roots, Chris shifted gears, literally, into IMCA dirt track racing, where he now brings the same intensity and passion he once showed in the cage. Alongside racing, he runs his agricultural businesses and remains closely connected to the communities that shaped him.

A wrestler.
A fighter.
A racer.
A businessman.
A husband and a father.

Please enjoy my interview with my friend Chris Tuchscherer.

Michael Leonard is both a visual artist and martial artist based in Rochester, NY.

Unlike many who start young, Michael began his martial arts journey later in life—and quickly made up for lost time, earning the rank of Nidan. Along the way, he developed a deep fascination with traditional weaponry—not just in their practice and application, but in their rich histories and evolution through the centuries.

Frustrated by the poor quality and unsafe craftsmanship of many commonly available weapons, Michael combined his extensive skills in woodworking and metalwork to create something better. From that passion, The Kodudo Studio was born. Today, his handcrafted weapons are trusted and admired by Karateka around the world.

Dan Blizniak began his martial arts journey over two decades ago in Dayton, Ohio. Early in his training, he purchased a Brazilian Cherry bokken for class, but it wasn’t long before his roots in woodworking—passed down from his father, a skilled carpenter from Buffalo, New York—sparked a new path.

Driven by curiosity and craftsmanship, Dan began experimenting with exotic hardwoods, crafting his own bokken. The positive feedback from fellow practitioners led to the birth of Blizniak’s Bokken—a venture where traditional martial arts meet innovative design.

Though his martial arts training paused after relocating to Buffalo, Dan’s passion never faded. He now channels that energy into creating custom training tools that blend the timeless beauty of exotic woods with modern techniques like 3D printing and advanced laminating. Among his favorite materials: the incredibly dense and revered Lignum Vitae, or “Tree of Life.”

One of Michael’s standout moments includes contributing to the soundtracks of several iconic films, most notably in one of my all-time favorites, “Eddie And The Cruisers.” Notably, our guest was not just a musical force in the background; he also graced the screen in the film (and its sequel), portraying the fictional saxophonist Wendell Newton.

Iain started training in the martial arts when he was only 4 and earned his black belt
in the Jhoon Rhee system this past summer. But martial arts isn’t something he is known for by most people.

He first gained prominence from a YouTube series where he reviewed musical theatre productions.
This led to the attention of the theatre industry and he even served as a correspondent for Perez
Hilton at the Tony Awards.

In 2017 he appeared in an episode of Law & Order: SVU.
He was in the TV Series Big Little Lies, he was the voice of Young Shaggy in Scoob! and the voice of
Chase in PAW Patrol: The Movie.

But most people will recognize him from his starring role in the hit CBS series
and one of my favorite shows… Young Sheldon.
