there is born in us once again the power of that night!

We are made able to resist our usual ways of thinking…

We find ourselves at the manger.

In this night’s holiness, we know
Love, Hope, Joy, Peace!

Like the Wise Ones, we cannot…
we will not return home the same way!

Is it all sewn up -- my life? Is it at this point so predictable, so orderly, so neat, so arranged, so right, that I don't have time or space for listening for the rustle of angel's wings or running to stables to see a baby? Could this be what He meant when He said, ‘Listen, those who have ears to hear... Look, those who have eyes to see?’

Lord, tell me my life is not all sewn up and that there is still time for me to travel with Joseph and Mary... that there is still room for me in the inn...in the manger...this season.

O God, give me the humbleness and the beginning trust of Daddy Joseph and Mommy Mary who believed beyond the facts of life and lived into faith. His love, Her Love must have been great to have trusted so deeply!

Lord, shape my faith! Help me look...at my life...help me listen...to my life. Help me see and hear You above all else.

I so long for the “quite enough” of Bethlehem in my life! May this season be the Advent of me! Holiness, may I find renewal as I resist the ways of the world and lean into the Holiness of daily life. May I pay attention, be astonished, and tell about it! I lean into the mystery of Your presence.

The Advent of our Lord is now…US! Once again, Christ is about to be birthed…within us. And so it is: The season renews us, enabling us to recognize and resist that which is not life-giving, that not of God’s deepest desires for us. Yes, this season of living into the mystery is a blessing!

Some of us…I…walk into Advent tethered to my unresolved yesterdays…the pain still stabbing, the hurt still throbbing. It’s not that I don’t know better; it’s just that I can’t stand up anymore by myself. On the way to Bethlehem, who will give me a hand? …make room for me? …see I have had quite enough? And...I know God sees me and is still throwing stars my way…if only I will open my eyes…and my heart to possibility!

So, when I begin to think I can predict the absence or advent of God, box the Christ in a stable in Bethlehem, rather than take the lid off His possibility for me…when I keep God out of my life and don’t take the hand of help offered me…the story tells me...that’s just the time God will be born in a place within me, and beyond me, I haven’t imagined and won’t want to believe.

I join those who wait for God watching with our hearts and not our eyes, listening…always listening...for angel words. Waiting with others is just what I need! I hear You calling me.

In my heart lies a Bethlehem, an inn where I must ultimately answer whether there is room or not. When I am Bethlehem-bound I experience my own advent in His. When I am Bethlehem-bound I can no longer look the other way conveniently not seeing stars, not hearing angels’ voices. I can no longer excuse myself by busily tending my sheep or my kingdoms...only. Prepare me for Your coming. O Holy One!

In the midst of shopping sprees,
let me ponder the Gift of Gifts.
Through the tinsel, let me look for the light
of the Christmas star.
In the excitement and confusion,
let me listen for the hush of angels' wings.

This Advent, I long to go to Bethlehem as never before and meet You in the manger places of my life. May this season be the Advent of me! Holiness, may I find renewal as I resist the ways of the world and lean into the Holiness of daily life. May I pay attention, be astonished, and tell about it! I lean into the mystery of Your presence.

Holy One, too often my answer to the darkness is not running toward Bethlehem, but running away. I should know by now that I can't see where I'm going in the dark, shouldn't I?

Running away is rampant...separation is stylish.
Run and tranquilize, don't talk about it, avoid.
Run away and join all those who have already run away.

When am I going to learn, Lord, Christmas comes only when I turn and face the mystery of the darkness -- scary as that may be!? Only then will I be able to see the Light of the World.

This year let me do what Mary did and trust God to be in the unknown.
Let me do what Joseph did and listen to my dreams.
Let me do what the Wise Men did and go to worship.
Let me do what the shepherds did and praise and glorify You for all I've seen and heard!

I cry by day, but you do not answer; and by night, but find no rest.” [God, there are times my life feels just like this!] “Do not be far from me, trouble is near and no one to help. I am poured out like water and my heart is like wax. It is melted within my breast. O my help, come quickly to my aid!”

Holy One, bring Your guidance to me as you have to those throughout the generations! I am here doing the best I can with the life I have. Help me know the thing most needed now so I can move my life forward! Help me trust myself to know what You would have me do. O Merciful One, this feels as if a threshold time! This is my prayer for awareness. O Merciful One, You hear my prayer.

God, sometimes life gets so hard it almost seems as if you are conspiring with the “bad guys” against me. I try to live my life with integrity but get accused of wrongful things anyways. I feel life constantly tests me and I just need some relief and some hope. Lord, help me in my struggle reflecting upon why bad things happen to me even though You want only good things for me! I long to understand how You are at work in my life so I will know what to do next…so I will know how to have faith. This feels like a threshold time, Lord! O Merciful One, You hear my prayer.

God, I know something about being pruned. I know what it feels like to be cut off or kept away from the people and things I love and are important to me. I bear no fruit when this happens...not for me, or You, or anybody! In such times, I often can’t feel anything at all, let alone Your presence. When life is cutting: How am I to live joyfully? …bear fruit? How do I know where to turn? …in whom to abide? How do I know what to choose? …recognize the true vine?

You say, "Come to me." Lord, I long to come. When life is cutting and there are many false branches blocking my way, please make a Way…please, come to me. Help me distinguish between the pruning the world does which diminishes my life and the pruning You do which takes me beyond the mind I have so I can think differently and accept uncertainty. I come…

God, I thank You. You protect me, guide me, feed me, love me...shepherd me all the time whether I know it or not. You know me. You know I so long to lie down...rest...be restored. I walk many a dark valley and it often seems “my cup” is emptiest just when I need insight and energy most! In uncertain times I am counting on You to gather me around Your table!

Lord God, these are indeed uncertain times and often I struggle. I struggle to know how to be with those I assume to be friends, let alone my “enemies”. I am often running on empty, irritable or difficult to be around. Yet, You fill me up. You lead me if I will but hear Your voice!

Help me to show up in my own life and not to be “sheepish” about my life’s possibilities…to stay curious. Abba, help me to live “love.” This is my prayer, Lord God. You hear me.

Sunday, April 18, we don't have a recorded podcast, but you may go to our website (tippchurch.org) and read this week's prompting.

~~~
God, like the disciples, sometimes I too need the safety of going behind locked doors. I get afraid of what I think I know. Often I doubt myself. At times, I fear I will be found out, that no one will be able to understand my truth, that I will…like You…get nailed just for being who I am.
Can You blame me for wanting to hide? Do You blame me?
It seems the world is filled with those who claim certainty even in these uncertain times. Doubt seems reasonable and yet so unsafe! What else can I do but go behind locked doors? Is there some other way of surviving?
Please, answer me and teach me Your ways….of Peace….
Inner Peace laced with Hope!
Frightened and locked into the only way of surviving I know, it is scary to change and seek a new normal. Come to me like you did to Thomas, and let me touch You…so I may believe in my unbelief. Let me feel Your words, “Peace be with you.” Help me resist and begin again…begin a new life blessed with a new normal!
God you say you will write your law within me and write your ways on my heart. But before You can write anything new on my heart, Lord, You will have to do a lot of erasing... I long to be free of the old influences and voices. Please do erase the old ways...but gently...so as not to remove even one more layer of my heart.
Oh, Lord! When I am honest with myself, I know it will be very hard for me to be freed to a new way of living. I need you with me Lord...for I may not be able to respond to life the way I long to respond. With an opening heart, help me recognize and accept the things I cannot change and have the courage to change what is mine to change…me! Take me by the hand so I will find it within me to live as if…even though. Lord, I ask it.
Unfortunately, we were not able to create a podcast of our prompting for March 14, 2021. However, if you would like to read the text, it is available on our website tippechurch.org. If you would like to join our Zoom service on Sunday, please email Pastor Karen at pastor.tippechurch@gmail.com.
Complaining usually doesn't get you what you want! The Hebrews wanted to be rescued, instead they got…snakes! Oh, Lord...I'd like to complain about some things that aren't going very well in my life. I trust you are listening to me, but could You just hold off with the snakes a bit? I’m pretty weary.
When they come, what will my snakes be? What is biting me, frightening me? Lord, help me look my life right in the face and see the consequences of my own choices...as …the consequences of my own choices. Help me recognize my antidote…the thing most needed now. Help me find the courage to live “As If” this is not the end but the beginning of a new me. Lord, I ask it. Want to talk more? Email us at tippetalk@gmail.com.
Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to You.
Lord, help me live with my heart wide open.
Holiness, I do believe…as best I can. I am striving to live “As If” You were right beside me in the choices I make every day. But sometimes I am frantic and flustered and afraid.
Lord God, help me remember it is not so much what I believe but how I choose to live that will see me through these times. Help me get “the devil” behind me, putting things in my life in the right order, creating possibly for the day with You.
As I live “As If” you are beside me and my name has been changed, everything changes. Lord, help me keep my heart wide open so I create possibility in each moment. Lord, I ask it.
As a Christian, I am called to live "as if" the divine energies of love and compassion inhabit each moment of each day. The Child of Humanity implores me to live in the Realm of God. A divinely, rightly ordered kingdom oriented around truth, loving kindness, right relationships, justice…
Imagine! Easter every day!
What would my personal life look like if love truly reigned, and what would my relationships look like if I took time to orient around loving kindness, and what would my relationship with Earth look like if I realized my kinship with all creatures and nature, and what would the social systems in which I live look like if they were oriented around justice?
What possibilities would I create if I live “as if” each day!
Jesus calls us to self-confidence knowing everything is within us…everything known. Jesus calls us to move out of binary thinking away from categories and labels. Jesus calls us to be One.
It’s not so much what we say we believe, but how we “live” what we truly “believe”. It’s about living as if the realm were right before us. And, it is!
Living “As If” creates possibility changing the present and the future. There is nowhere to run and nowhere to hide for wherever you go, there you are. There is nothing to be afraid of except…fear itself. And, we know both fear and joy stream from an experience of awe. The choice to find joy or be in fear…is ours. So, lean into the awe, the possibility of the moment.
Live “As If.” Keep your heart wide open.
You know, God, unlike Paul, I don’t feel very comfortable going out and confronting people even if it’s with good news…let alone the gospel’s news. I am very often uncomfortable sharing the gospel with others…even with those in my inner circle.
Well, actually, when Paul confronted…when he shared…he only used words when necessary! He was with the people in their churches and lives and shared the gospel by living it with them.
Paul got to know each one well enough to know their needs and then did something to support them rather than convince them. Paul brought to each person the part of the faith story each person most needed to hear.
Is this what You would have me do?Come alongside people to live the gospel with them?
I could use some information, Lord. What I could really use is some inspiration.
You see, there are so many false idols calling out to me. They are hard to resist. These idols, these “isms” of our day try to convince me I am better off when I give in to them, than I am when I resist them.
The biggest stumbling block I have in my life…is me. With Your help, I’d like to surrender my pride and come to You in the full knowledge of my need to go beyond the mind I have. I do indeed need some inspiration. And the courage to go with it!
The spirit of Advent is one of longing…longing for more, for other…for we know deeply…there must be more. Surely God is not done with creation yet. We know…we cannot make it through on our own…to figure it out, fix what is broken, address the myriad needs we see. So there exists this longing…perhaps…more…a sacred trust.
In Advent, we give ourselves…perhaps hesitantly at first but then more fully…give ourselves to Holy possibility. We journey into Advent as faithfully as we are able. We only move forward…together. This is our prayer and an affirmation of the love of God for each of us, all of us. This is ADVENT’s hope, love, joy, peace.
Joseph dreams and Mary sees angels. What are you dreaming about these days? If an angel came to you in your dreams, what words would you hope to hear?
You are invited, held in the arms of an angel, to dream and boldly respond to the angel’s proclamation being born in you.
Remember Mary’s wisdom…to look beyond today’s reality and rejoice as we imagine a world in which everyone can live into God’s vision altogether.
I wonder, given today’s readings, if God is thinking: “Oh Human Being, be glad you are here… right there where you are. I am with you. Please…don’t rush ahead…in search of Christmas. Don’t rush! You’ll miss it…the Advent of something new coming into your world.”
Advent isn’t passive… It is about living a transforming life even while waiting eagerly, expectantly…to be even further transformed!
It comes…even as we are tired and weary of more changing.
Through God’s action…not by our own initiation,
change comes to us for God wants more for us!
As fall fades and the cusp of winter nears, we enter a fallow time...in mother nature and in our human nature. In nature, the fields lay fallow - not planted and covered by snow. Snow that contains the nitrogen the soil needs for new life to grow. So the plant roots actively continue to grow, imbibe the richness of the soil…made possible in fallowness. And this bears fruit! Literally, in the right timing: spring.
The Fallow Way in our human nature is a time when God invites us to enter into God’s ways of enriching ourselves with holy rest and holy restoration…taking in what we most need now…knowing this bears much fruit in our right timing, too…a conscious time restoring and preparing us as internal seasons of winter and, so then, spring come.
When we embrace the Fallow Way, there is precious work unfolding beneath the surface of things with real consequence.
Holy One, I hear You. There’s a goat in me - when I don’t tend to the least of these (who are hungry, thirsty, the stranger, naked) for they…are You. We are One. But, there is a sheep in me too…for there are times when I have done these things, willing to see You in the human being before me. In those times…in them, I see myself as well as You. Help me sort out my inner sheep from my inner goat and live within Your fold.
How do we be God’s people in the real world?
We need a heart “attack”… a new heart beat and rhythm and alignment.
What is it within you that needs tending? What is the light needed in your life so you can see who you deeply “be” and where you are going?
How you “tend the light” may make all the difference in a day, and in your life!
Our lives have many stories running through them concurrently: daily lives and long-term intentions, our projects and goals, relationships with different people. And each story has a process or a storyline: a beginning, a middle, and an end. So, three acts: a Day One, Day Two, Day Three.
Oh Lord! I’m carrying around a lot of stones! If these stone I carry could only speak, they would name my burdens and questions and doubts. I have come a long way, stones and all…sometimes it’s just hard to keep on going. Help me cross over to another point of view. Help me glean the wisdom of my life’s stones. Give me the energy to follow the best I can…as a new person in a new promised land…re-formed.
Well then, if it wasn’t all about Moses, I suppose it’s not all about us either. It’s not about me, you. It’s not about this/that family. It’s not about this church. I guess it’s not about how well our leaders are doing, or not… how well we are doing, or not… But then, what is it all about? Wow…what a Day 1 emotional quandary!
We are invited into Day 2 and risk the consequences rather than waste time trying to find what is the impossible: a solution that has no consequences! Will you open the storyline…be curious, vulnerable, courageous? Are you willing to look at things differently?
Day 2 is a scary place at times. You just don’t know what will come next but you do know…it is coming (you can’t turn back…the clock) and you have a say in what will come next. The way you tell yourself this story matters! You can’t skip day 2!
In today’s Wisdom Teachings we hear the stories of how God appears to both Mary and Joseph as in a dream, through the vision of an angel. Like them, things are yet to be revealed and we either make space for a new possibility…or we don’t. Are you, like them, willing to dream a new dream? Please,
Come! O Come away to the manger with us!
In today’s Wisdom Teachings, we are reminded we can “come to the manger” because we are rooted in hope and watered with love. Each of us prepares in our own way...always remembering our faith gives us what the world cannot...hope, peace, joy, and love. These are the movements of Advent set against the background of purpled waiting. The stories all assure us God's future for us is steeped in goodness, and so the waiting is not idle, but faith-filled. So, Come! O Come!
Turbulence, hard times, come…even when life seems to be living “good”. Chaotic changes may come to our door and we sigh, hard times…please come no more! Still, we know the depth of the “waves” this uninvited turbulence can create in our lives. We usually doubt at first that we will be able to cope. But then we remember and we know deeply at our core, turbulence is “truth” there’s no way to ignore. And it is often that very commotion…that truth, held in holiness, which brings wholeness to life and even joy.
In today’s Wisdom Teachings, we see God offering fullness of life in unconventional ways to people who are facing scarcity, suffering, and exclusion. God offers water, living waters. The people are asked, we are asked, to consider what it is that is really life-giving right through our turbulent lives. We are to be “concerned with ourselves”! Truth in the midst of turbulence.
