"The opposite of depression is EXPRESSION" - Dr. Edith Eger

ARTISTS RISING is about RISING UP through the discovery and re-discovery of our creativity. It is about healing and transformation through the cultivation of creativity and through creating thoughts and emotions that will be the canvas, the foundation...of our masterpiece, our best life. I believe everyone is creative, we are born that way, but we forget, and we conform and get covered up. Creativity is a recovery process. It’s the road home we are all searching for. Stepping into the flow of creativity is stepping into healing, and it’s stepping into an encounter with the most sacred version of your truest self… it’s connecting with the divine and most powerful life force that exists.

Created with community, storytelling and wholehearted artistic development in mind, singer-songwriter (and recovering classical musician) JennyRebecca Ronning, sits down with people who inspire her and teaches on topics she wished she would have known more about as a younger artist - specifically things we don't tend to learn in art schools and music conservatories like mental and emotional health, how to cultivate creativity and how to invite people along on your creative journey and turn your passion into a business or a community, if that is what you desire.

No matter what stage of life you are in - whether you are a seasoned artist or just beginning to tap into your creativity - we all need reminding about how to step into that flow...how to realize that place as our home, and how to navigate the blocks and resistance that try to keep us disconnected. Welcome to ARTISTS RISING CO!

Follow @artistsrisingco on instagram and facebook for more inspo and a community built to encourage and empower you to go forward pursuing your creative dreams with more confidence, resilience, and freedom to show up and do what we, as artists, do best - BE VULNERABLE, day after day! Let's do this!

Hello beautiful souls, welcome to the ARTISTS RISING podcast!

Today's episode is with Multi-Disciplinary Singer, Composer, Theater Maker and Drag Queen, Shlomi Moto Wagner, otherwise known as Mazy Mazeltov.

Shlomi and I studied opera together back in the day with the same voice teacher and he shares his story - a powerful story of facing his fears - and even quitting music at one point because our teacher was so abusive, how he recovered from that trauma, and his journey of trying to find his way and his true voice, navigating his career as both an opera singer and a drag queen.

Our conversation explores the following topics:

  • The importance of being visible & telling our own stories through art, and how being authentic with our own storytelling frees others to do the same and change our realities
  • Becoming the role model you wish you had
  • Finding the path to your authentic voice
  • The realization that our art really can change the world
  • How to come back after leaving your art behind -How Shlomi was able to heal after an abisive voice teacher…
  • Tool kits to encourage abundance and a healthy mindset and continue pursuing your creative calling
  • The freedom of surrender and how spiritual principles can take the pressure off of our creativity.
  • The importance of keeping the channel open and also of networking and learning to promote yourself
  • The importance of continuous education - even when you are already working as a professional artist

And this week's BONUS episode: How to Recover and Heal After Traumatic or Abusive Instruction and How to Change That Critical Inner Voice to a Nurturing One!

I have a new offering that I am trying here on the podcast… and that is to offer bonus episodes as well as a Journaling Workshop and a MEET UP every month as part of a membership through Patreon for Artists Rising Co! The membership costs $15 and you receive:

She has cultivated a following of over 158 thousand Instagram followers, 120 thousand YouTube subscribers and a podcast called Challenge Your Norm. The topic of today's episode is something that came up within the context of Pernilla telling her story and it's this question - What if you believed you could?! We talk today about all things mindset, how there is always a way, how when you commit to something it becomes easier to carry it out, how discipline leads to self-confidence and belief, and the life changing power of visualization and experimentation. I am so excited about today's episode with brilliant actress and dear friend, Anne Diemer! Anne has acted in many famous theaters in Germany as well as in primetime German television and we talk about so many things today, namely the serious work of play! Some of the other topics that we also cover are how to use whatever you are feeling and turn it into creative energy (both for performing and creating),  how to manage being a "working artist" when you don't feel like it, the danger of judgment, how to free yourself from judgment and how to push yourself even when judgment is lingering, managing the critical voice that comes up in the middle of a performance, finding inspiration in every day life and becoming more like children - taking our play seriously.

I hope you enjoy this interview! Follow Anne for more infos and upcoming shows and tv appearances @anne.diemer.

I have such a beautiful episode for you today. I interviewed singer-songwriter Natalie Closner, who is just an exquisite and extraordinary human being. She is most known for her band, Joseph, which is a trio that she created with her two sisters but she has also recently released new music under her artist name Natalie Schepman. In this interview we talk about being true to yourself and having boundaries in your creative process and what that can look like, and in other words, creative freedom vs people pleasing, and how tempting it can be to abandon ourselves in small decisions that we make on a daily basis…ooof! These topics are so huge and I feel like I want to actually just pull our conversation apart and continue to tap in to each topic that we uncovered, there were so many layers! We talked about the importance of believing in your own art, not needing anything from your audience, healthy self-doubt vs self-confidence, juggling music business, music labels, touring, overcome challenges, navigating disappointment and expectations and the importance of naming your triggers as a mental and emotional resilience tool, as well as the importance of being connected to yourself as "an artist facilitating an artistic experience"…just such juicy topics! I think you are really going to enjoy getting to know her and hearing all of her beautiful stories.

And on a personal note, I just want to say, thank you so much for listening to the podcast! Last month, the artists rising podcast got 10,000 downloads for the first time and that is a huge celebration and means a lot to me because it’s really been a labor of love these last few years! I don’t ever run ads on the podcast and it’s definitely not something I get paid to do. I really just hope that it somehow inspires other people to step a bit deeper into their own creativity and potential, and hopefully gives people more tools and encouragement to get where they want to go AND much faster than I was able to. So…thank you so much for listening and I hope you will continue to share it with people if it is valuable to you.

Welcome to Artists Rising! I hope your November is off to a beautiful, creative start! I am so excited share this intimate conversation that I had with a dear friend of mine, singer-songwriter KOKA. And this was our second attempt at recording this podcast! The first time unfortunately, somehow did not save to my computer but KOKA was gracious enough to have another interview a few weeks later and I think this one is even better than the one before so…I’m glad it turned out this way.

KOKA is an incredible artist and just recently released her new album, Eudaimonia,  - it’s so beautiful and you should all go and listen to it! She is from Albania and left her career in architecture to pursue her dream of music. We talk about so many things, including breaking past barriers, dropping expectations but still holding onto hope, evolving with patience, having courage and taking risks, and balancing artistry and business - amongst many other things! I know you will love her story and all the wisdom she has to share.

Follow KOKA at @i.am.koka and listen to her new album Eudaimonia on Spotify!

Today I'm talking about what Brene Brown found in her research as she was interviewing people was that the people that she interviewed who most exhibited Wholehearted living weren’t anxiety free or even anxiety - averse; they were anxiety aware. They were committed to a way of living where anxiety was a reality but not a lifestyle and they did this by cultivating calm and stillness in their lives and making these practices their norm.

There are four main stages to accomplishing any goal:

  1. Learning

  2. Implementing

  3. Refining and 4. Maintaining...Most people never get to the refining stage...why? Because it is UNCOMFORTABLE. It requires us to embrace our imperfection and ask ourselves why something isn't working or getting us the results we want. When we can learn to separate our IDENTITIES from our ART, and COMMIT to refining until we accomplish what we've set out to do, we can accomplish anything.

When was the last time that you properly fed her the things that she LOVES!!! Somewhere along the way, we grow up. And are just so busy feeding ourselves "shoulds", and "ought to"s and ways we need to improve ourselves but we so easily lose touch with delight, and one of the most important parts of being an artist is to stop forcing yourself all the time to get better! The MOST important part of being an artist? Is the BEING...and we cannot have the energy to BE without the nutrients of things we LOVE. So we need to feed and nourish ourselves with what we love...every day.

Hello my friends, I wanted to share one of my daily practices with you today, something very simple, that you can literally start doing at any moment, any time, anywhere and it can start to make you feel better, shift your mood, the atmosphere around you and change your entire outlook on life...and that very simple thing is asking yourself powerful questions. Dr. Edith Eger, holocaust survivor, psychologist and therapist writes that her experience in Auschwitz was hell on earth but that the worst prisons by far are the ones we build in our minds. She says the foundation of freedom is the power to choose and asking ourselves questions is one way we can start to open the door to freedom and choice.

Content creation is something that you might hear a lot about because every online marketing or business podcast is talking about this in some way, but as an artist, even one who has been studying marketing and business for the last decade, it is actually really challenging to translate all of the marketing stuff to the art world.

Particularly because I think the majority of artists don’t realize that - actually, you ARE a business, you ARE a start up all on your own, you ARE a brand.

Almost everything is different about the way that business now a days is run online and the way that we are building our tribes and audiences now is honestly a totally different animal then it was ten years ago.

I actually believe that being an artist right now, is the best time to be an artist in all of time and history because we DON’T have to have the middle man, the label, the publisher, the manager, the curator, ….because everything is online, we get to have direct contact with our audiences and build those relationships organically.

When you commit to creating quality, value-driven content designed specifically to improve the lives of your audience, you’re committing to creating continued growth, a loyal fanbase, and eventually a sustainable business foundation for your art to build on.

And you may be asking yourself, as a musician, how am I supposed to create value for someone else when ...people aren’t even buying music anymore?! It feels like what I have to give isn’t even valuable to people…

Friend, if you can relate to that feeling in any way, this episode is for you. Regardless of what kind of art you are creating, if you are an opera singer or actor that is recently finding yourself out of a job because of Covid, now is the time to build your brand, build your online tribe, and realize your value.
