TRANSCRIPT:
[00:00:00] Good morning everybody. It's morning here in Chicago. Welcome to Women Seeking Wellness. Happy 2023, and I just wanna say hello. Hello. I missed you all. I've been thinking and I'm just laughing at my attempts at reboot. Over the course of the last year or so, I lost my steam during the pandemic and then decided to try again and then try again.
And here I am trying again. I'm doing more than trying. I'm doing it, I believe I cracked the code in that. I am hiring it out. I'm just hiring out the production. I don't know if you guys all know this. I have been the one that does the recording. Obviously, this is my voice. I'm recording. I am the one that edits, I was the one that, audio [00:01:00] edits, tags publishes artwork, social media website.
It, was a bit. It was, it was a bit, so it was always daunting for me to, think about doing more episodes. So I have found somebody that's gonna help me with that process, so that all I need to do is have fun and talk, which, you know, I love to talk. And, also, I, have some interviews in store, which is very exciting.
You know, me and my interviews. I love that. It's really one of the reasons why I started the podcast is that I. I think some amazing people are in my life and I want you guys to meet them and I want our conversations recorded for all of history. So, okay, what is going on with me? Let me think. So 2023. Whoop, whoop.
I am feeling [00:02:00] very hopeful for the year now. If you've listened to my podcast at all, you know,, I'm actually not one that poo poo's a good New Year's resolution. I mean, I'm all for anything that gives us a little energy towards goals, and yet for me, it was around the holidays, around when I was away for Christmas.
I realized that I had been in a bit of a rud. I haven't really talked about this. My dad passed away last year in the spring and that pretty much dried up my creative juices, and God love him. He was very sick and you know, it wasn't a tragedy, it was just age and, and. You know, he was free of his body.
I know that. I also know that grief is a funny thing and it took me a while to kind of come out of it. I think being home and seeing that, you know, life goes on and everybody's doing well and thriving and. You [00:03:00] know, and I needed to take some more positive actions. So I started, I'm gonna talk about a couple things that that have been going on for me.
One of the things is that I started with my morning routine again, so I've always been somebody that gets up early. My problem is, is that I was getting up. and like frigging diving into Facebook, right? Instagram reels, you know, I could watch somebody, Do a cake decoration. I could watch a guy weed, and whack a lawn.
I know. That's so weird. I like the videos that are like, start to finish the befores and the afters. We're gonna take this rusty axe and we're gonna make it into something that is restored brand new, like those. I just, , little Drs coming outta my mouth. It's, it's mind numbing. Emotion numbing, let's call it what it is.
And,[00:04:00] and it, you know, serves me until it doesn't serve me. So, so I started doing something, I don't know why, I don't really know how this, exactly came about. I, I think that part of it was me looking back into, what things worked well for me and, one of the things I'm, I'm looking at, I'm, I'm typing in my computer as we speak just because I want to have it in front of me.
So that, so you guys can have the, the correct resources, and I'll put the resources again in the show notes, but I just was looking like, what, what were the things that really served me when I was the most active? Because I, I, I really believe we ebb and flow in these things and so there's no beating myself up for being away from it.
It's just now is the time for me to lean back into, a routine. So, I remembered that I did this four part four phase meditation, and if you go back, you'll find it in some [00:05:00] previous episode. It starts out, no matter what time, let's just use four minutes to make the math easy. So you do one minute of the four minutes your, your presence, getting present in your body, doing either a review of your body to relax it, but just getting present in that meditation.
The second minute you. Visualize or go back to a time where you were filled with gratitude, filled with love, filled with just joy, just some kind of thing that, Triggered that re most recently for me, my niece asked me to be the, person that officiates her wedding. And I was just overcome with such a joy and like, oh my gosh, thank you God kind of situation.
And and then the third minute, Is visualizing something in the future, some situation that, you are hoping to manifest and bringing that feeling of joy and love and [00:06:00] gratitude and, and all of that positiveness to that situation and visualizing it as if it has already happened to. You know, as if the universe is conspiring to your highest good, and then the last minute is coming back with that, that just bubble of joy, of what it was like in the past.
What, what the visualizing the future and bringing that back into your present. And so I remembered that as as a thing. And so I. I, I remembered that, I think it was Jesse Elders is the guy's name, but he was on a podcast. Hal, his name is Hal Elrod. E L R O D and guess what? His podcast is called The Miracle Morning.
And so it's one of those situations that I fell into the internet where I'm like, went for one thing and then I was like, oh, the miracle Morning. It kind of sounds like what I'm [00:07:00] looking for again. You know, there's so many resources out there and there's so many ways to start again. So I go and. get up a little earlier every day.
Okay, I can do that. I like it when I get up earlier. Well, he gives you ways to get up earlier, which I'm gonna share with you right now, which has been revolutionary for me. There's five parts of it. Number one, first part of helping your body get outta bed is at night setting the intention. That I'm going to get up and perform, do the my, my morning routine.
For me, I have this affirmation. I can't get wait to get up and have a cup of coffee. Like there's something about that ritual. It's like I get excited when I'm going to bed that I can get up and go have my cup of coffee. So the second thing is, is to set an alarm away from you. So that you have to actually have to get up out of bed.
So if you put your phone by your bed, you put your phone over on [00:08:00] your dresser or in the bathroom. for me, that doesn't work for me because I was waking up my spouse. So I have a whoop, which is a, a fitness tracker that will vibrate and and it vibrates on my wrist and that gets me up out of bed. And so you immediately get up out of bed, you go to the bathroom, you brush your teeth.
So by the time you're brushing your teeth, then you drink a glass of water cuz you're dehydrated. Then the last thing you do is put on your workout clothes. So it's set the intention, move your alarm, so it, you have to get up to turn it off. Three, you go in and you brush your teeth. Four, you drink a big glass of water, and five you put on your workout clothes.
By this time, That's like a five minute process. You're, you're about, you're awake, right? And, and so that helps you break this habit of snoozing. And so for me it's worked. I mean, here [00:09:00] it is. I'm, I'm recording this. It's, January 24th and I started this on December 27th, I think is what it was when I got back from the holidays.
So it's been, it's been amazing. It's been absolutely amazing. I give. Sundays to kind of veer off and not have a scheduled wake up time. But every other day I'm, I'm waking up. And, it, it is, it is true that when it is a regular wake up time, your body really, my body thrives on that. So, so that has been, a really great transition for me.
And so then in the Miracle Morning, They talk about this acronym savers. So in your morning, having some kind of a structure. So savers is, one of those acronyms. S is for silence, A is for affirmation, V is for visualization. E is for exercise, R is for reading. S is for scribing writing, but [00:10:00] W doesn't look good at the end of this.
So I write savers at the side of my journal, and, I've messed with this. I find that even though I'm tired, if I do my, four-part meditation, that includes the silence and the visualization, and, I do do an a, a written affirm. Afterwards. But, doing that first gets it done. Sometimes if I go right into reading, or writing, I run out of time to really do a, a good meditation.
But sometimes I'm too tired and I'm afraid I'm gonna fall back asleep. So, It's a work, you know, it's, it's a work in progress. And then I went through my week and I said, okay, what kind of exercise can I do on each of these mornings to get the energy moving? You know, I have a Peloton bike, I can get on that bike.
I've been doing 15 minute rides in the morning, and it's amazing. Stokes the [00:11:00] fire. and my exercise consistency has gone through the roof when I lower the bar and say, 15 minutes is enough, which I'm gonna talk about that in a second. and then, you know, the writing and, and the reading. I'm back to, you know, I was always reading, I was just reading Facebook, so now I have, I'm back to reading.
Plotting through my books. That's really how I've gotten through reading some, you know, one of the books that, I've really, really resonated with is that badass woman. Her name is Jen, something or another. I'll look at, I'll look it up and put it in the show notes. it, she is, she has such, I, I have listened to her, as well as I have, read her books, her last name.
Dun da da da. Jen Sinero, S I N C E R O, and she wrote like, you're a badass at making money. There's a whole badass series. You are a badass. Badass [00:12:00] habits. Habits badass every day. She has a really great way of talking. And at first I was like, this is probably like bubblegum. It isn't. Some good shit. There's some good shit in there.
and one of the things I love that she says in there is that if you have a dream, that dream something that is always with you, it's God-given. Like God put that dream into your consciousness and also will help you achieve it. If you take the right actions. And so, you know, that morning routine is a time where everybody else is asleep, that I'm able to really get back, some of that like, just centered time that I was missing, you know?
So, so this routine has really been amazing. My, that's my hope for you is that you can carve out a little bit of time, you know, even if it's like, today is a day where I'm in the. At 8:00 AM and and so today is not a day where I want to get up at five to do a workout. [00:13:00] So today's a day that I've said, okay, let's do some sun salutations.
Let's do five minutes, and this is what I want to talk about next, is this movement. There was an article just, when was it? It was just, Recently, when was this article put out an ink magazine and it says, neuroscience says that, that this two minute rule will help you start every day feeling more energetic, focused, and mentally sharp.
And so it talks about how this This article that is in transitions in Sports Medicine, it's a meta-analysis that was PU published in there, is saying that two minutes of exercise, moderate to high intensity exercise can improve your attention, your concentration, and your learning and memory functions for the next two hours.
So if you do two hours, two minutes. Of exercise, it will affect you for at least two hours. And so their recommendation is 5, 5, 5 30. There's five pushups, [00:14:00] five squats, five lunges, and a 32nd plank. So something to get, your heart pumping. Something to get, your body moving to, you know, in, in Chinese medicine, they would say it's something to move the chi you need to, there are certain, poses in yoga that are more, relaxing poses, and there's certain poses that move the chi, and so like moving your energy, getting that energy going like a downward dog, you know, in a sun salutation.
There's, there's some stretching, but there's also a, a plank and a downward dog, and there's, you know, other, other things like that, that really kind of move the energy. And so for you, , that is my hope, is that you find something and if you don't find something, you know, doing this 5, 5, 5 30, 5 pushups, five squats, five lunges, and a 32nd plank.
Something to get your body moving. I also love a good cup of [00:15:00] coffee and I could do a whole podcast on how coffee works as far as getting a little bit of, you know, when it, a little bit of coffee. Can improve your focus, improve your productivity. You know, there's, there is, more and more information out there That being said.
A little bit is good. Too much is too damn much. So anyway, I've blathered on enough. I cannot wait to share with you, different things this year. I don't know where this podcast will take me. I just know that I have, recommitted and that I really am excited to, get into 2023 with you all and I love and appreciate you.
So thank you so much.

Anne Nicholson Weber: 00:00 Welcome. This is episode 2. I'm so glad you're here. My guest today is chiropractor, Dr. Stephanie Maj, who explains how chiropractic care during pregnancy can help prepare your body for a more effective labor and an easier childbirth. [music] This is the BirthGuide podcast -- conversations about building your circle of support in the childbearing year. We connect you with experts in our community who can help you conceive, stay healthy in pregnancy, have a safe and satisfying birth and embrace the joys and challenges of becoming a new family. I'm your host, Anne Nicholson Weber, the founder of BirthGuideChicago.com, where every month thousands of Chicago area families find relationship-centered care, from preconception through the postpartum period. [music] Welcome to a new episode of the BirthGuide podcast. Today we're talking about the benefits of chiropractic care in pregnancy. Joining me to talk about this is Dr. Stephanie Maj with Community Chiropractic. She has been practicing for 26 years and has specific expertise in the area of perinatal care, including Webster certification. So Dr. Maj, maybe you could talk first off about what kinds of issues can arise in childbirth that having had chiropractic in pregnancy could have helped to prevent. Dr. Stephanie Maj: 01:42 Yeah. Well, first off, thank you so much for having me on your show and for what you do in the Chicagoland community. It's such a resource and it's so helpful. Anne Nicholson Weber: 01:54 Well, thank you. Dr. Stephanie Maj: 01:55 I love talking about this. I love talking to new families that want to have a more proactive, a more intentional birth. And I really feel like my job is to help prepare them, where most everyone that I know has either an OB or a midwife or somebody assisting them and their job is more of monitoring -- it's watching, it's testing, it's looking for trouble, you know. And what my job is really to do is to prepare your body for delivery. And, you know, if we look at what the troubles are, we would back up to the first, just the anatomy. The baby -- the uterus and the baby -- are sitting on your pelvis. That bony pelvis is what that baby has to get through there. And so a lot of our focus is the alignment of that pelvis. So when you have a balanced pelvis, the hole that the baby comes out of is wide and open and uniform. Dr. Stephanie Maj: 03:02 So when the baby's coming down the birth canal, there are bony landmarks that the baby has to hit and things happen when the baby hits them: the shoulders move, the baby twists. And this is how this dance of getting out of the uterus and getting born, this is the dance of that. There's twists, there's turns, it all relies on this pelvis being in the right alignment. So if your pelvis is twisted, it can interfere. It can actually make that hole distorted and interfere with the baby's ability to get through your pelvis, the actual boniness of your pelvis. But it also can interfere with the baby, you know, when it's supposed to hit this certain bone and trigger a reflex, and then the shoulders, you know, tilt and the head turns or whatever, if that bone isn't there, then that doesn't happen. And so that's where the babies can get stuck in a certain portion of the birthing process. Dr. Stephanie Maj: 04:01 You know, most everybody that comes to me is looking to have a vaginal delivery. Basic. The people that come to me tend to have more of that intentional idea of like, not being medicated, not having interventions. You know, I wanna make sure that I help their bodies make that happen. Instead of thinking of it like what problems there are, it's like, how do we avoid them before they happen, you know? So, I mean, the easy thing is if somebody is having hip pain, back pain, you know, that is your body's sign that there's something going on. You know, a lot of people think those indicators are just like stress. “Oh, that's just stress. Oh, that's just stress.” Or “I'm pregnant. Of course I have back pain. I'm pregnant. Everybody that is pregnant has back pain.” Not true, not true at all. Dr. Stephanie Maj: 04:53 And I have a lot of people that don't have any issues, you know, have no pain yet. Their pelvis is twisted. And I see them later in their pregnancy and they're wanting to have this vaginal delivery and the baby isn't cooperating. You know, the baby is not in a great position. And so a patient that comes to me, she's pregnant right now. I have two patients, her and the baby. So I have the, maybe the problem that they came in for, you know . . . So say they came in because they're having back pain or they're having pubic bone pain, which is pain in the front kind of in your groin. And so we wanna make sure we heal that. But we also have a baby that we wanna help get into the proper position. Dr. Stephanie Maj: 05:39 And we also have a delivery that needs to happen. And then you have a baby, you know, . And so a lot of times it's like the delivery isn't the end point, it's the beginning point. So the healthier you are through this process and through the delivery, the more able you are to show up to your new baby. And the better the birth, the better the ability the baby has to latch and to, you know, any of those head issues or any colic or poop -- you know, all the things that can happen in a new baby. So I really feel like wellness care is seeing these moms really early in their pregnancy and helping them with those things. Anne Nicholson Weber: 06:23 So about 20 questions occur to me. Let's start with this one. Assuming you're not having problems -- so you don't come in for your first chiropractic appointment that you've never done before because your back is hurting or your pubic bone is hurting -- but talking about it, as you have, as preventive care, when's the right time in a pregnancy to begin chiropractic care? Dr. Stephanie Maj: 06:48 Anytime. But the earlier the better. I mean, again, in our society, we're a problem-based society. So I go to the doctor when I have a problem. And so sometimes when that happens, it's later in the pregnancy, which means correcting that problem becomes more of an issue. So for instance, you know, when you're pregnant, the front of you gets really heavy with the baby and with your chest and with everything, all that gets very heavy, which puts a strain on the back of you, the back of you has to hold you up. And so the heavier the front of you, the harder it is to balance the back of you. You know, I consider pregnancy a moving target. Meaning Anne comes to me. She has a pain in her SI joint, which is the joint in her pelvis. And we do the treatments necessary and she gets better over time. Anne isn't pregnant. Dr. Stephanie Maj: 07:48 Okay. Sally comes to me, she's pregnant. She's two months pregnant. She has an SI pain. Well, even though, you know, the baby is very small, as that baby gets bigger, more stresses are on those areas. So it's something that, once it's healed, we need to just monitor it and keep it balanced. So if people come to me without symptoms, then it's just, like I said, very boring, where they get adjusted and we make sure their pelvis is in line. There's a way to do that very safely and naturally. You know, it's kind of like whack-the-mole at the fair. You know, you go to the fair and you hit the whack-the-mole machine. And this is what, you know, prenatal care can be, is that, you know, as the baby gets bigger and the stress changes on the body and more relaxin and LA LA LA, then we just say, okay, how's your body doing today? And we just help balance it wherever it needs to be balanced on that particular visit. Some people that's every week, some people that's two times a month, sometimes that's once a month, just depends on the person. Anne Nicholson Weber: 08:51 Yeah. Well, philosophically, I'm interested to ask -- particularly women who are kind of naturally-oriented and maybe heading for a natural childbirth, a physiologic childbirth, in that world within the birth world, you'll hear, well, our bodies are made to do this. And so my question is, if our bodies are made to do this, why do we need chiropractic care during pregnancy? Dr. Stephanie Maj: 09:20 I love that question. That is an awesome question. Our bodies have this natural, innate ability to take egg and sperm and connect them and make a baby. And yes, our bodies don't need any help, but they need no interference. So my job as a chiropractor is to remove the interference in either our nervous system or in our alignment, and just allow the body to, you know, just kind of manifest this pregnancy as it was supposed to be. You know, if you think about the world we live in now, this isn't the way it's been for very long, where we sit in front of computers, our level of stress with the pandemic and with the world as it is, is very high, you know. Laptops and screens and motor vehicle accidents and slips and all those things add into what's going on in our bodies. Dr. Stephanie Maj: 10:22 And yes, I think that in an ideal world, our bodies need no help. Yet, making sure the pelvis is in a proper alignment, making sure the nerves are not interfered with and making sure that the round ligaments -- which are those ligaments in the front of the belly -- are supple and not cramping or uneven or asymmetric, because those are the things that can create tightness in the uterus and not allow the baby's head, when it's dense enough, to head south. You know, gravity happens. And when that baby's head is dense enough, that head will go south and go head down. And if it isn't, something's interfering with it. And that's what for me, that's where the Webster technique got its reputation. Dr. Webster noticed that when babies were breech, he noticed a twist in the pelvis, he noticed spasming in the round ligaments. And he said, “I wonder if I get rid of the twist and get rid of the spasming, if the babies will turn?” And they did. And in my office, 75% of the time, that's what happens -- if I have enough time and they’re candidates. Well, he also said, why wait until they're breech? Anne Nicholson Weber: 11:37 Mm-hmm Well, maybe you could talk a little bit, um, technically I guess, but in terms that someone like me can understand: What are you actually doing? Dr. Stephanie Maj: 11:48 So as a chiropractor, my job is so focused on the spine that people I don't think really understand that it's really about the nerves. So the nerves that run our whole body come from our brain through our spinal cord that is inside the bones of our spine. And then the nerves that run us, like the wires that run your house, come out in-between each one of those vertebrae. And so for us, we wanna make sure that those nerves are as free flowing as possible, that there is the least amount of interference. So if we say that the body is naturally able to do this, well, how is it naturally able to do this? Well, the nervous system is the driving force of that. It's what triggers the hormonal system. It triggers the whole thing. So if the nerves aren't working as well as they should . . . I always use the analogy of dominoes. Dr. Stephanie Maj: 12:45 You set a million dominoes up, it only takes one domino to go. And then it's like, like over the bridge and around the windmill. So for me, I wanna make sure all the dominoes are in place in this delivery. So I wanna make sure the nerves are flowing. In the Webster technique, I wanna make sure that the pelvis is balanced. So there's this technique called the pelvic drop technique. It's very gentle. I have a special table where you can lay face down and you can put your belly in the table, a hundred percent safe for you and the baby. And the table just rises up about a half an inch and helps rock the pelvis back into neutral. And so how do I know if it's not balanced? I don't x-ray, obviously, pregnant women. But you know, 26 years of doing this and I can see it when you lay down. Dr. Stephanie Maj: 13:32 I mean, a lot of times when their partner is in the room, I say, see, I'll show them, see how this, you know . . . they'll lay down and the seam of their leggings or their pants will be shifted to one side or you can see one butt cheek is higher than the other, or one leg is shorter than the other. You know, that is a sign that there's a twist in the pelvis. So the dropping helps rock that back to neutral. And after we check, they're equal. And then we roll them over and on usually the opposite side, there's a spasm in the round ligament. And just like very gently massaging, we help massage that. And what the two of those do is they help get rid of . . . almost like a balloon animal. If you have a balloon and you twist it in opposite directions, it will get tight in the middle. And that's how they make balloon animals. Dr. Stephanie Maj: 14:19 Well, if you have a uterus and you twist it in opposite directions, it will get tight in the middle. And then that baby's head won't be able to get head-down. So what, what I really feel strongly about is regardless of how somebody wants to birth, the wild card is, that baby has a birth story and you don't always get to choose. Right? So, you know, what I do know is the more you're able to keep your baby in a proper in utero position, the less likely that that positioning is gonna cause a later problem. Like, I don't know what this month is about, but this month has been a month of babies for me, and I'm talking about one month or younger babies having trouble latching, having head tilt -- torticollis is what it's called, you know, their head will only turn one way, not the other --, colic, you know, digestive issues, all these things, they all lead back to the fact that they were in a funky position in utero. All of them were vaginally delivered, yet they, you know -- even in the most pristine situation, it's dicey business coming through that birth canal. And so our job, you know, is a little bit of cleanup. Anne Nicholson Weber: 15:32 So you're optimizing the way you go into both the childbirth and the postpartum period, Dr. Stephanie Maj: 15:40 Right. It's just, for me, it's just an honor to help these humans get born in this way. Anne Nicholson Weber: 15:47 Well, I think that should cover it. I'm so glad that you joined me to talk about this. I think that many women going through pregnancy are just not aware of all the resources there are available to them. And it's helpful when you don't have to just take it. You said early on, you know, people just assume, “well, of course my back hurts, I'm pregnant.” Once you've identified it and called it a problem, it turns out there are lots of ways to address it. Um, but it's that first step of saying, this is something that could be better and there are steps I can take to make it better. Dr. Stephanie Maj: 16:24 Right. And that pain is your body telling you something. Yeah. So it's not just telling you you're pregnant, , it's telling you there's something going on. And so if you're having these . . . you know, use it like a warning light on your dashboard, right? And if we can help you with that, it's only gonna help all the other things along the way. Because again, once you have a baby, then you have a baby. And if you're, you know, if you're still having issues, you know, now you have a baby to care for. And so we wanna help with all of that. And, um, I mean, that's why I do what I do. It's beautiful. Anne Nicholson Weber: 17:01 Wonderful. Thank you so much. It was great to talk to you, Stephanie. Dr. Stephanie Maj: 17:05 Thank you. Part 2 of 3 in a discussion of the immune system. This episode focuses on debunking the flu shot and talking about what really makes you sick and how to be well.
The flu shot has mercury (mercury-free versions are loaded with aluminum) both of which are neurotoxins. Problem is that flu vaccination is terrible at actually predicting the flu strains out there on any given "flu season."
The Cochrane Database Review, has issued no less than five reports between 2006 and 2010, all of which debunk the myth that flu vaccinations are "the most effective flu prevention method" available. The review showed that reliable evidence on influenza vaccines is thin. http://www.cochrane.org/CD004879/ARI_vaccines-for-preventing-influenza-in-healthy-children

While there is no specific dosage level at which "magic" happens, based on the most recent research by GrassrootsHealth—an organization that has greatly contributed to the current knowledge on vitamin D through their D* Action Study—it appears as though most adults need about 8,000 IU's of vitamin D a day. This is significantly higher than previously recommended. For children, many experts agree they need about 35 IU's of vitamin D per pound of body weight.

Drs. Steph and Kelly discuss the Webster Technique, a specific chiropractic sacral analysis and diversified adjustment. The goal of the adjustment is to reduce the effects of sacral subluxation/ SI joint dysfunction. In doing so, neuro-biomechanical function in the pelvis is facilitated.
Dr. Kelly Synowiec-Moroney Bio:
Simply put, I knew there was something more to being healthy. I never went very far. I grew up in Franklin Park, went to school in River Grove, DeKalb and Lombard. My mother thought she was doing the right thing but as a child every time I had a cold the doctor put me on antibiotics. As a teenager we drank tons of pop. Then in college my headaches were coming at least once a week and I took Advil every time. From the outside I looked healthy, but deep down I knew there was more to true health.
Education
Starting in high school AP classes, the medical field was my pathway. I enjoyed learning about eating healthy and exercise. I looked at chiropractic but everyone said I should be a real doctor. So I started volunteering at outpatient clinics and in the ER. Everywhere I looked, people were sick and my desire to help them get healthy naturally continued to grow until I could no longer ignore it. Chiropractic school was perfect.
My education from National University of Health Sciences taught me all the science behind the body. Nutrition and exercise were all there. Then there was that something more — True Health that comes from within. I learned that nature needs no help, just no interference. Our body knows what to do, we just have to let it do what it was designed to do.
Practice Philosophy
Here at Tree of Life Wellness Center we are dedicated to helping families reach their health care goals naturally. I base my recommendations on your health goals. You hire me to guide your body to heal in the right direction. I have the latest technology available in my office. We complete diagnostic testing on the nerves, muscles, feet and bones. All of the medical recorders are electronic. I incorporate instrument adjusting for those people who do not like the “cracking” sound. I am a very analytical person. I love to analyze each segment of the spine and make an adjustment to bring the body back into its natural position. We address you from head to toe, inside out.
About Me
I am a mom and a wife in addition to running my practice. I fully qualified as a doctor of chiropractic in 1999 with Cum Laude honors and have since progressed to focus on Non-Surgical Reconstructive Care. Bill and I have been together for over 20 years. I delivered both of my kids naturally in the water. Chloee, my first born is 16. My youngest is 12-year-old Liam. Now as a mother I get to put my school experience into practical use. I get to see first hand how the body knows what to do. I get to directly help support my kids to be all that they can be. Both Chloee & Liam were adjusted within 24 hours of birth. It is great to find that balance between home and the office. I love being active & present in my kids’ lives.
Morning is my time to myself. It is not always easy but, I feel awesome getting up before 5am to go workout and have my time. I typically have a protein and greens shake every morning for breakfast. I make sure Bill, Chloee, Liam and myself get checked for an adjustment once a week. We spend our time outdoors as much as possible. Hiking in Southern Illinois or Michigan is right up our alley.

Intentional actions to achieve optimal health for any woman in the perinatal time is discussed by Drs. Stephanie and Kelly.
I am also involved in our community and am happy to be a part of the Elmhurst Chamber.

Why do babies need a chiropractor? What is cranial work in terms of chiropractic and how is it different from the adjustment? How is it different from Craniosacral? What are indicators that parents can look for suggesting their child should see a pediatric chiropractor? Doctors Barb and Steph with their combined 40 years of experience discuss all of these details and more on this episode of Families Seeking Wellness.
Meet Dr. Barb:
I am a graduate of Northwestern College of Chiropractic. After graduating, I have continued my education with a focus in Cranial/TMJ work and organ adjustments as well as spinal adjustments.
I have always been amazed at the body's natural ability to heal itself and love to educate my patients back into health. It has been my experience that if areas of the body can be supported through adjustments and proper nutrition; optimal health can be maintained and poor health can be improved. In many cases drugs can be avoided.
I have almost 400 hours of Continuing Education credits on Sacro Occipital Technique (SOT).
When not working, I am an active member in the profession and also enjoy spending time with my husband Dan and my sons Daniel and Andrew.

Dr. Maj discusses the ins and outs of how healthy fats can change our lives with Udo Erasmus. Here is a link so you can review the free gift. Udo’s Healthy Fats Recipe book. http://Udoerasmus.com/drmaj BIO:
I was born during the second world war in Europe, and sometimes you will hear me say that I was born in hell and with a lot of help from visible and invisible friends, walked a long crooked path from there to heaven.
Along the way, I tried out many things and learned a lot. Every trade and job, every movement or breath and every step led me to the next turn on the path to find new, different and out-of-the-box possibilities.
My path includes brief jobs in several different trades: fruit picking, dairy farming, logging, mining, carpentry, house painting, clearing land, burning brush, growing food, gardening, and finally pesticide spraying. I spent a year in medicine and several years in science research. One winter, I had a part-time job babysitting pickled fish in a fish museum. One summer, I worked for the fish and game branch. Several other summers, I worked on a drilling, blasting, and prospecting crew in the mountains of British Columbia.
The reason I am telling you this is because what all of these had in common was human interaction with nature and ‘wilderness’.
In the 60s hippie era I even tried drugs, couch-surfed, traded a Winchester 30-30 for a trumpet that I played on the front steps of my house after a few drinks of Southern Comfort, played flute and harmonica, sang in a choir but more often in the shower, hitchhiked for six days from Toronto to Vancouver without a penny to my name, camped out, started a nude beach, and lived in co-ops, communes, apartments and houses both in rural and urban settings. It was wild, but it was fun!
Yes, I even got married. A lover of biology, and convinced that pregnancy is not a disease, I attended the home-births of my three children and admit that my wife did almost all the work and that my small contribution was to catch them, tie and cut their cords, and return them to their rightful owner, mom.
After being poisoned by pesticides in 1980, I seriously turned my passion and attention to health. I obsessively studied literature, created a method for making good oils with health in mind, developed the first ever flax seed oil, authored several books on the effects of oils on health: Fats and Oils; Fats That Heal Fats That Kill; Choosing the Right Fats; Omega 3 Cuisine; and enthusiastically educated the public in about 40 countries on the effects of oils on health and disease.
In 1992, I developed healthy whole foods supplements for dogs, cats, and horses. In 1994, I developed an oil blend that is both better balanced and more effective than flax oil. I followed this with probiotics blends and digestive enzyme blends in 1997, and a year later developed prebiotic fiber and green blends.
I have passionately given 5,000+ live presentations on nutrition and health, 3,000+ media interviews, 1,500 staff trainings and traveled to 30+ countries with my message on oils, health, nature, and human nature. For 15 years, I spent 6-9 months a year living out of a suitcase to spread the message of good oils and health.
Over the past 15 years, I have had the pleasure and honor to grace the stages with luminaries like Tony Robbins (on oils) and Deepak Chopra (on peace,) keynoted an international Brain Health conference, and lectured in conferences on five continents.
Now I am writing on many different titles and topics, including an autobiography. I consult, present, take on the key global issues of our time, and spearhead several multi-trillion dollar projects on peace, health, energy, environment, and education.
My fervor and fire are now focused on sustainable energy and water management, as well as healthcare based in nature and human nature, the nature of human nature, and the thirst of the heart resulting in perfect health for you, your family and the world.
Thank you again for being here. I look forward to taking this journey with you.
At Your Service,
Udo Erasmus

How do you get your body and mind to work together? Your body reflects your energies, your energies reflect your body! Your body gives us messages about how to be well.
Beth Lynch's BIO:
My journey as a healer began in the nursing field. I’ve always been drawn to caring for the whole person, recognizing that we are physical, mental, emotional and spiritual beings with important needs on each level. Holistic approaches are largely not recognized in Western medicine, but I found the model of hospice to have similar values. So for many years, I cared for cancer, palliative care and hospice patients—and it was fulfilling. I was able to gracefully honor each person exactly how they were in the moment and allow them to feel their own sense of dignity.
I still, however, felt there was something more I could offer as a healer.
While I was a caregiver and nurturer for others, I hadn’t always been the best at taking care of myself. I met an Eden Energy Medicine Practitioner at a local event and decided to book a session. I resonated deeply with the way she held the space of healing for me first, so that I could step into the space of healing for myself. I wasn’t judged and nothing felt forced. The practitioner simply focused on my needs and worked with my body’s energy systems.
As I continued to explore energy medicine, my life began to radically shift. I experienced a sense of vitality that I hadn’t known before. For the first time, I learned how to truly care for myself. I knew that I wanted to share energy medicine with others to empower them on their own journey to heal, evolve and optimize their wellness.
I studied Eden Energy Medicine (under Donna Eden and her experienced faculty) for 3 years to become a clinical practitioner. I whole-heartedly believe that it is one of the quickest, easiest and safest ways to reconnect with the body’s needs and effect positive change—physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Most traditions work with just one system. Eden Energy Medicine is special because it utilizes 9 energetic systems, wrapped up into one highly effective healing modality.
What I enjoy most about working with clients is that I can hold the space of complete acceptance of their states of being. The world doesn’t need any more judgement. I want clients to understand that energy is just energy—there is no right or wrong. We identify areas that are flowing well and areas that need support, and realize that it’s all part of their individual soul’s journey.

Teaching women to feel empowered with their body and food. The answers are within you
to reprioritize themselves so they can choose to be happy!
BIO:
As a holistic health coach, my passion is supporting my clients, to heal their relationships with eating, food and their body. To learn to reprioritize themselves, and step into themselves in a bigger way.
There's a lot of frustration women feel at knowing what do but not quite being able to do it, and some of my clients are not sure what to do to get results. I’m the guide, I work lovingly, supporting, inspiring, and creating a judgement free experience, challenging them to reach their goals! Which get set in the beginning of our work together.
My mission & philosophy: With incremental changes one can create a life time of change. I believe eating well (and living well!) is about changing your lifestyle—not dieting. When you have a confident, compassionate relationship with your body, everything that follows, is positive and healing.
As a health Coach, and educator I focus on a holistic approach. Including working with one’s mindset, because one’s thinking effects their emotional and physical body.
I’ve a background in Yoga, teaching since 2001, and about 30 years of a personal practice, as well as aromatherapy. I’ve a passion for the power of scent and how essential oils enhance ones well-being. I enjoy teaching others how to use Essential Oils to experience greater harmony in their busy life.
Plus my time in social work school and my personal spiritual practice aid my ability to provide a safe non-judgmental, nurturing space.

It’s not often that you find a healthcare provider that shares your passion for what’s possible when it comes to your health. But at Gold Coast Chiropractic, we know that better health—and feeling your best—can and should be within everyone’s reach. Upon graduation he moved to Lombard, IL to attend National University of Health Sciences. While there, he was awarded both a Bachelor’s Degree in Human Biology and a Doctor of Chiropractic. Many couples plan home births because they believe that most of the time pregnancy and childbirth are normal functions of a healthy body, not a potential life-and-death crisis that requires the supervision of a surgeon.
At home, you decide where to deliver, you can move around as you desire, decide who you want there. There is no risk of unnecessary interventions, you can eat your own food, cuddle in your own bed, have a waterbirth, have siblings there or not.

By recognizing and promoting the physiology of reproductive health cycles and events, while promoting current evidence-based practices, Corinne works to partner with her clients for an empowering and safe pregnancy and birth, as well as reproductive health across the lifespan.

BRONSON’S HEALTH PHILOSOPHY
Most illnesses and lack of vitality are caused by unhealthy lifestyles. Our genes alone are not at fault. Most of the time it is what you are doing to your genes.
Many health issues that people suffer with can be helped through natural medicine. The focus of my practice is to provide guidance for my patients so they can achieve better health and wellness.
We work together on the following 3 basics: nurturing balanced energy, the fundamentals of healthy eating, as well as restoring proper spinal and joint movement. These four approaches; functional medicine, acupuncture, nutrition, and chiropractic can help move people toward health and healing.
Health is a process and a lifelong journey that demands our attention. My ultimate goal is to provide care to help people live a full and productive life.

Families Seeking Wellness Episode 002
Drs. Stephanie Maj and Brittany Guelzow get together today to discuss how Dr. Brittany come to chiropractic and her passion for helping pregnant women and children get and stay well at Community Chiropractic in Chicago.
BIO:
Hello! I’m Dr. Brittany Guelzow and I want to take you through my chiropractic journey. I started cheerleading when I was 12 years old. What I know now is that cheerleading is very hard on the young athletes body. By the time I was in high school, I was experiencing low back pain nearly every day. I tried all of the traditional methods from pain killers to muscle relaxers to massage in attempts to alleviate my back pain. These methods would help for a little while, but the pain always came back. We weren’t correcting the problem. Finally, my mom met a pediatric chiropractor at a community chamber event. She thought that we’ve expended all other options, why not give this chiropractic thing a try.
On my first visit at the office, I already noticed a few things that set chiropractors apart from other doctors. First, the doctors in the office really took the time to explain how the body is supposed to function, and the impact the nervous system has on our overall health. This information was the missing piece of the puzzle that so many families, including my own, were looking for. Chiropractic truly deals with correcting the cause of a variety of health problems. What I haven’t mentioned yet is the other health problems that I was experiencing before I went to the chiropractor- allergies, frequent colds, anxiety, and headaches. After a few months under chiropractic care, ALL of these conditions, as well as my low back pain, dramatically improved.
The second thing I noticed is something that I did not expect to see- Kids everywhere! Not only were there lots of children in the office, but they were all happy to be there! I knew that any doctor that could get kids to be excited to come to their office had to be doing something right. This experience set me on the path to becoming a pediatric chiropractor.
I started my undergraduate coursework at Winona State University in Winona, Minnesota. I was able to finish up my requirements for chiropractic school in 3 years. From there, I went to Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa, which is where chiropractic was founded. In addition to Palmer’s core curriculum, I spent a lot of time at technique seminars, especially those geared towards adjusting the pediatric population, to really perfect my technique and understand the philosophy behind what we do. After graduation, I went on to obtain my Webster Certification through the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association, allowing me to safely and accurately adjust pregnant women. My expertise lies within this population.
I am so grateful to have found Community Chiropractic. We have the pleasure of being able to serve people in all stages of life- from newborns to geriatrics, as well as people in all stages of health- from the very sick and injured to those that utilize chiropractic care to keep their bodies functioning properly. No matter where you are on either spectrum, we hope to aid you and your family on a path to become the healthiest version of yourselves!

Dr. Steph discusses the basics of CrossFit and how it improves the functionality of the body in this interview with Dr. Amber Eckel.
BIO:
Dr. Amber Eckel is a Chiropractor and co-owner of Aurora Integrative Medical in Burnaby, BC. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science from the College of Kinesiology at the University of Saskatchewan, before pursuing a 4-year Doctorate program in Chiropractic. She then graduated as Valedictorian of the centennial class of the Los Angeles College of Chiropractic at Southern California University of Health Sciences. Upon graduation she also received the Dr. Lester McCoy Clinical Excellence award.
Dr. Eckel has practiced in a variety of multidiscilinary clinics, chiropractic mission trips, as well as numerous athletic events gaining invaluable experience while furthering her passion for health and wellness. She has attended seminars all over the world to expand her knowledge in chiropractic philosophy and principles, pediatric wellness, nutritional healing, postural retraining, and sports therapy. She holds certifcations in Active Release Technique ® and Kinesiotape ®. She is also a member of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA) and certified in Webster Technique ®.
Dr. Eckel strongly believes that in order for individuals to express their true health potential they must live congruent to their environment, thus emphasizing a true chiropractic lifestyle to each of her patients. As a cancer survivor herself, the importance of preventative care and healthy living is extremely important. Therefore she focuses on educating her patients on how they eat, move and think- because she feels this will make the biggest impact on the patients health, healing and recovery. She believes that maintenance of health is far superior to the treatment and diagnosis of disease, therefore there is no better time to start your chiropractic journey than now. From newborns to the aging, the recreational to the Olympic athlete, she encourages her patients to get their spine "checked" regularly. Her ultimate goal is for her patients take back their health and live to be 100 years old on purpose.
Dr. Eckel strives to be a role model for her patients and community. In her spare time, she volunteers at many local community events, and enjoys being active in such sports as cycling, running, hiking, snowboarding, and CrossFit. She is also a current adjunct faculty member at the Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine where she teaches Anatomy and Physical Medicine classes. From 2012-2018, she taught and helped develop the core curriculum at Vancouver Career College's Registered Massage Therapy Program.
She looks forward to helping you achieve peak health so that you can live your best life!

I hope my sharing and vulnerability will help someone listening. I have decided to open myself and share my coaching call with Dr. Glenn.
He is offering us a free copy: Never Binge Again: Stop Overeating and Binge Eating and Reprogram Yourself to Think Like a Permanently Thin Person...on the Food Plan of Your Choice!"
BIO:
Glenn Livingston, Ph.D. is a veteran psychologist and was the long time CEO of a multi-million dollar consulting firm which has serviced several Fortune 500 clients in the food industry. You may have seen his (or his company's) previous work, theories, and research in major periodicals like The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Chicago Sun Times, The Indiana Star Ledger, The NY Daily News, American Demographics, or any of the other major media outlets you see on this page.
You may also have heard him on ABC, WGN, and/or CBS radio, or UPN TV.
Disillusioned by what traditional psychology had to offer overweight and/or food obsessed individuals, Dr. Livingston spent several decades researching the nature of bingeing and overeating via work with his own patients AND a self-funded research program with more than 40,000 participants. Most important, however, was his own personal journey out of obesity and food prison to a normal, healthy weight and a much more light hearted relationship with food.

In 3-4 months, with only lifestyle changes, I have flipped my high cholesterol back to normal! Let me show you how you can too, without drugs!
LDL cholesterol can build up in your arteries and form fatty, waxy deposits called plaques. High-density lipoprotein (HDL) is the “good,” healthy kind of cholesterol. It transports excess cholesterol out of your arteries to your liver, which removes it from your body.
HDL cholesterol is the well-behaved "good cholesterol." This friendly scavenger cruises the bloodstream. As it does, it removes harmful bad cholesterol from where it doesn't belong. High HDLlevels reduce the risk for heart disease -- but low levels increase the risk.
Here are nine healthy ways to raise your "good" HDL cholesterol.
What are statin side effects?

Diets don’t work and I learned the hard way. Early on as a dietitian, I put people on diets hoping it would help them improve health and keep weight lower. Do you know what I found?
Most folks felt chained to the scale rather than focusing on healthy behaviors. And, they felt so ashamed. Do you?
They thought they were a constant failure since after every diet, they just regained the weight (or more). Can you relate?
I didn’t like seeing my clients feel so awful so I thought maybe I was supporting them incorrectly.
I dug into the research and you know what I found?
Diets don’t work for most people. Long term diet success was the exception not the rule. You’re not the only one.
They also don’t improve health long term and only worsen things like mood, insulin levels, and self esteem.
The diets failed. Not you. Once I discovered this, I couldn’t un-see it. I found ways to promote health without the pursuit of weight loss: I found Intuitive Eating, Health at Every Size approaches, mindful eating, and joyful movement. I sought training from experts in these approaches.
Fun fact about me: I have never been on a diet. At times this made me feel like a rebel in disguise and out of place. When I was training to become a dietitian and learning about diets it didn’t make sense to me. It felt unhealthy in my gut and heart. I remember sitting in class overhearing my cohort discuss foods they never eat. They named foods like french fries…which I just had eaten for lunch. I felt shame and anger. I was pretty sure I was healthy but they were telling me I was doing it wrong.
I tried to fit in and practice dietetics the traditional way until I realized diets hurt all of us. And, I thankfully connected with those wise experts who trained me to help the world to stop its obsession with diets and weight. Interested in my training?

For children, many experts agree they need about 35 IU's of vitamin D per pound of body weight.

toxins, toxins, everywhere………………………………
Presented to:
The Royal Chiropractic Knights
Of The Round Table
By:
Dr. Diane Feils
Last fall, I was at a Beauty Counter party at my daughter in law’s house.
I knew the make-up and body products sold were supposed to be safer for human
use than many of the products on the market today, but learned that the United
States has not passed a major federal law to regulate the safety of ingredients used
in personal care products since 1938. I found that stunning. I was aware of the fact
that many chemicals were used in our hair and body products, but not really sure
what they all were.
It reminded me of the awareness I had at a Norwex party several years ago
concerning the toxic cleaning products, as well as the knowledge I have learned
when talking to people that use essential oils.
With all of that said, I am not here to sign you up for a home party or ask you to be a
distributer.
I learned that there are over 80,000 chemicals on the market today, and many don’t
have safety data. Manufacturers are allowed to use their best judgment as to what is
ok to use. Compared to other countries, the US has only banned a slight percentage
of those available for use, by comparison. Because we have the FDA, EPA, and CPSC
(consumer product safety commission) we, as consumers, are under the false
impression that someone is watching out for us…. but quite the contrary is true.
The Beauty Counter products have a list called The Never List…. a list of certain
chemicals that are never used in their products. These chemicals consist of solvents,
disinfectants, surfactants, preservatives, plasticizing agents, softeners, moisture
carriers, pesticides, as well as other unknown ingredients.
The addition of the chemicals cause side effects ranging from cancer to minor skin
irritations; endocrine imbalances, allergies, fertility issues, birth defects,
neurotoxicity and developmental toxicity. Some damage DNA and accelerate the
growth of skin tumors. The most astonishing ingredients are those called fragrances.
Fragrance formulas are protected under federal law’s classification of trade secrets
and they can remain undisclosed.
(I wonder if that is how Secret antiperspirant got its name)
So, with this realization, I searched out other toxic chemicals known to be a
problem, and learned about the Fire Retardant Law for children’s pajamas in mid
1973 put in place by Gov. Jerry Brown. A chemical called TRIS phosphate was used
on the fabric of the pajamas for children age 6 and under to resist the incidence of
sudden igniting of the fabric in the case of a fire. This was soon questioned as to the
safety and two scientists, Arlene Blum and Bruce Ames, performed an experiment
exposing bacteria to TRIS. It was discovered that the DNA of the bacteria was
mutated, naming the chemical a carcinogen.
The test was called the Ames Test. With this realization, The National Cancer
Institute banned the chemical instantly for use on children’s clothing.
However, the clothing manufacturers sued the government because they had their
entire stock of unsellable products on hand. The ban was overturned, but they
started using chlorinated TRIS. It was really just as dangerous. The manufacturers
decided ultimately to stop using both chemicals.
It was 20 years later when the furniture industry in California decided that house
fires could be reduced if fire retardants were sprayed on the furniture fabrics and
the polyurethane foam in cushions. Arlene Blum was contacted to get her opinion of
using Tris again on the furniture. Finding out the danger, chemicals called PBDE’s
(polybrominated diphenyl ethers) were used. Technical Bullitin117 was issued by
Gov. Jerry Brown of California as required use in all furniture manufacturing. Since
the California furniture marketplace was so large, it became the nation’s Fire Safety
standard.
Unfortunately, baby products were categorized under the classification of furniture.
This allowed the chemicals to be put in products such as cribs and mattresses, car
seats, high chairs, changing tables, strollers, bathtubs, nursing pillows and rockers.
It was also found that the chemicals flaked off into dust, from furniture cushions and
children were exposed to the particulate matter floating around the house, on the
floor and toys. Much of this furniture is still in use today…a never-ending source of
particulate matter continuing to expose individuals now.
Obviously, the concern of exposure with infants and young children was the effect
on fetal and early brain development, and the effects of thyroid hormone mimicking
action of the PBDE’s causing other conditions such as infertility and
hyperthyroidism.
Researchers revealed that these exposures also were also associated with
neurodevelopmental delays such as decreased attention; fine motor coordination
and cognition in school-aged children.
Flame retardants on furniture were tested, and found to not be as effective as
intended. The chemicals put into the foam doesn’t work, as the flame is never
actually put to the foam, but the fabric covering. Once that cover is on fire, the
chemical is overcome and the rate of burning is not reduced. They did conclude that
the amount of toxic carbon monoxide and hydrogen cyanide gas released into the air
from the burning chemicals during a house fire is the leading cause of death rather
than burns.
The chemical industry is a 4 billion dollar per year industry. Here’s a story: In
California, lawmakers heard a case in which a 7 week old baby was burned and died
3 weeks later following a fire caused a pillow on which a baby was sleeping started
on fire. The testimony was meant to keep the retardant laws in place. As it turned
out the story was a complete hoax and the Dr. who was a burn specialist was also
found to be the star witness for the flame retardant manufacturers. He was part of a
decade long campaign of deception by the chemical industry loading American
homes with pounds of toxic chemicals causing the above listed health issues. Ethics
and integrity go by the wayside when there is money to be made.
So, speaking of Flame Retardants, I became aware of another; BVO
Brominated vegetable oilis a complex mixture of plant-derived triglycerides that
have been reacted to contain atoms of the element bromine bonded to the
molecules. Brominated vegetable oil is used primarily to help emulsify citrus-
flavored soft drinks, preventing them from separating during distribution.
Brominated vegetable oil has been used by the soft drink industry since 1931,
generally at a level of about 8 ppm.
Careful control of the type of oil used allows bromination of it to produce BVO with a
specific density (1.33 g/mL). As a result, it can be mixed with less-dense flavoring
agents such as citrus flavor oil to produce a resulting oil whose density matches that
of water or other products. The droplets containing BVO remain suspended in the
water rather than separating and floating at the surface. [2]
Alternative food additives used for the same purpose include sucrose acetate
isobutyrate (SAIB, E444) and glycerol ester of wood rosin (ester gum, E445).
United States
In the United States, BVO was designated in 1958, as generally recognized as
safe (GRAS), but this was withdrawn by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in
1970. The U.S. Code of Federal Regulations currently imposes restrictions on the use
of BVO as a food additive in the United States, limiting the concentration to 15 ppm,
limiting the amount of free fatty acids to 2.5 percent, and limiting the iodine value to
16 BVO is used in Mountain Dew, manufactured by PepsiCo; Powerade, Fanta
Orange and Fresca made by Coca-Cola; and Squirt, Sun Drop and Sunkist Peach
Soda, made by the Dr Pepper Snapple Group. Numerous generic citrus sodas also
use it, including "Clover Valley"/Dollar General sodas and Stars & Stripe On May 5,
2014, Coca-Cola and PepsiCo said they will remove BVO from their products
BVO is one of four substances that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has
defined as interim food additives the other three
are acrylonitrilecopolymers, mannitol, and saccharin.
Canada BVO is currently permitted as a food additive in Canada
Europe In the European Union, BVO is banned from use as a food additive. In the EU,
beverage companies commonly use glycerol ester of wood rosin or locust bean
gum as an alternative to BVO.
India Standards for soft drinks in India have prohibited the use of BVO since 1990.
Japan The use of BVO as a food additive has been banned in Japan since 2010.
(This source leads to a study done about the concentration levels of BVO in North
Americans, and requires more context.)
Health effects of BVO
The United States Food and Drug Administration considers BVO to be safe for use as
a food additive. However, there are case reports of adverse effects associated with
excessive consumption of BVO-containing products. One case reported that a man
who consumed two to four liters of a soda containing BVO on a daily basis
experienced memory loss, tremors, fatigue, loss of muscle coordination, headache,
and ptosis of the right eyelid, as well as elevated serum chloride. In the two months
it took to correctly diagnose the problem, the patient also lost the ability to walk.
Eventually, bromism was diagnosed and hemodialysis was prescribed which
resulted in a reversal of the disorder
An online petition at Change.org asking PepsiCo to stop adding BVO to Gatorade and
other products collected over 200,000 signatures by January 2013. The petition
pointed out that since Gatorade is sold in countries where BVO is not approved,
there is already an existing formulation without this ingredient. PepsiCo announced
in January 2013, that it would no longer use BVO in Gatorade, and announced May 5,
2014 that it would discontinue use in all of its drinks, including Mountain Dew,
however, as of July 5th, 2017 BVO is still an ingredient in Mountain Dew, Sun Drop,
and AMP Energy Drinks.
Again, huge corporations are more concerned by the almighty dollar instead of
consumer safety.
How many questionable medical conditions could be caused by a similar situation?
Patients usually don’t reveal over-consumption of certain foods and drinks, because
they know it’s unhealthy and don’t want to be told to discontinue it.
In many cases a patient could be given an inaccurate neurological diagnosis, and
medicated for it, when the culprit is excessive consumption of a government-
regulated toxin.
I remember a child in our Onalaska neighborhood that became unable to walk for
weeks. Her parents had her to local doctors as well as Mayo Clinic. It was a DC who
specialized in Neuro Response Testing that discovered it was her blanket that was
making her sick. Most likely, the polyester or the flame-retardants on it were the
cause. The Mayo Clinic told the parents, that they couldn’t give a definitive diagnosis
and “this is just how your child will live out the rest of her life.”
Gee, polyester……….so popular once…. is now back, and it’s everywhere.
That took me to another thought process. I searched toxic fabrics.
Not that long ago, people stuck to the natural fibers: wool, cashmere, cotton, silk,
linen, and hemp. But if you take a look at your clothing labels today, you are likely to
find materials like rayon, polyester, acrylic, acetate and nylon. And your shirts and
slacks may be treated to be wrinkle-free or stain resistant. These technological
advances in fabrics may make our lives simpler, but at what cost? Here's ashort list
of fabrics to avoid, and the healthy ones to pick instead.
Polyester is the worst fabric you can buy. It is made from synthetic polymers that
are made from esters of dihydric alcohol and terpthalic acid.
Acrylic fabrics are polycrylonitriles and may cause cancer, according to the EPA.
Rayon is recycled wood pulp that must be treated with chemicals like caustic soda,
ammonia, acetone and sulphuric acid to survive regular washing and wearing.
Acetate and Triacetate are made from wood fibers called cellulose and undergo
extensive chemical processing to produce the finished product.
Nylon is made from petroleum and is often given a permanent chemical finish that
can be harmful.
Anything static resistant, stain resistant, permanent press, wrinkle-free, stain proof
or moth repellant. Many of the stain resistant and wrinkle-free fabrics are treated
with perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs), like Teflon.
Keep in mind that many fabrics (including natural fibers) undergo significant
processing that often involves:
Detergents
Petrochemical dyes
Formaldehyde to prevent shrinkage
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs)
Dioxin-producing bleach
Chemical fabric softeners
These additives are often toxic to the human body, may contain heavy metals and
can pollute our environment.
If you are chemically sensitive or just want to surround yourself with healthy
fabrics, there are new options. Doris Brunza, a fashion designer who worked in the
Garment District in New York City for 20 years, knows about finding fabrics that
don't cause reactions, because she is chemically sensitive. She points out that nearly
ALL fabrics, including organic fabric, are treated with chemicals at some point
during their processing. Still, some choices are better than others. In general, look
for natural fibers like cotton, silk, linen, hemp, wool and cashmere. If you can,
purchase and wear organic fabrics and organic clothing. While they still might be
processed to some extent, they are often a better choice than synthetics. Brunza also
advises people to buy high quality European garments made with the finest fabrics.
Expensive clothing may seem overpriced, but the quality of the raw materials is
superior, and the fibers can be woven into beautiful fabrics that are soft and strong,
requiring little chemical processing to make them suitable for you, the consumer.
They also last you for years so are a wise purchase in the long run.
Remember to avoid chemical dry-cleaning whenever possible and wash your
clothes in a "green"detergent.
So, in closing you need to be your own advocate when it comes to toxic exposure.
Choosing organic food, pure water, safe body care products, natural or organic
clothing and textiles in your home can work together to enhance your wellbeing and
help you live a healthier life. Reducing your toxic load may sometimes seem like an
overwhelming task, but just like any other change, make it step by step. Over time,
you'll see improvement in your own life and in the world around you. Change in the
world begins with you making simple changes in your own life.
The Never List ™ is made up of approximately 1,500 harmful or
questionable ingredients including the nearly 1,400 ingredients banned
in the European Union.
The Never List
Benzalkonium chloride: a disinfectant used as a preservative and
surfactant associated with severe skin, eye, and respiratory irritation and
allergies. Found in: sunscreens, moisturizers.
BHA and BHT: synthetic antioxidants used to extend shelf life. They are
likely carcinogens and hormone disruptors and may cause liver damage.
Found in: lipsticks, moisturizers, diaper creams, and other cosmetics.
Coal tar hair dyes and other coal tar ingredients: a byproduct of coal
processing that is a known carcinogen. It is used as a colorant and an
anti-dandruff agent. Found in: hair dye, shampoo.
Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA): a chelating (binding) agent
added to cosmetics to improve stability. May be toxic to organs. Found in:
hair color, moisturizers.
Ethanolamines (MEA/DEA/TEA): surfactants and pH adjuster linked to
allergies, skin toxicity, hormone disruption, and inhibited fetal brain
development. Found in: hair dyes, mascara, foundation, fragrances,
sunscreens, dry cleaning solvents, paint, pharmaceuticals.
Formaldehyde: used as a preservative in cosmetics. A known carcinogen
that is also linked to asthma, neurotoxicity, and developmental toxicity.
Present where quaternium-15, DMDM hydantoin, imidazolidinyl urea,
diazolidinyl urea, sodium hydroxymethylglycinate, 2-bromo- 2-
nitropropane-1,3 diol (Bronopol), and several other preservatives are
listed. Found in: shampoo, body wash, bubble bath.
Hydroquinone: a skin-lightening chemical that inhibits the production of
melanin and is linked to cancer, organ toxicity, and skin irritation. Found
in: skin-lightening creams.
Methylisothiazolinone and methylchloroisothiazolinone: chemical
preservatives that are among the most common irritants, sensitizers, and
causes of contact skin allergies. Found in: shampoo, conditioner, body
wash.
Oxybenzone: sunscreen agent and ultraviolet light absorber linked to
irritation, sensitization and allergies, and possible hormone disruption.
Found in: sunscreen, moisturizer.
Parabens (methyl-, isobutyl-, propyl- and others): a class of
preservatives commonly used to prevent the growth of bacteria and mold.
Parabens are endocrine (or hormone) disruptors, which may alter
important hormone mechanisms in our bodies. Found in: shampoo, face
cleanser, body wash, body lotion, foundation.
Phthalates (DBP, DEHP, DEP and others): a class of plasticizing
chemicals used to make products more pliable or to make fragrances
stick to skin. Phthalates disrupt the endocrine system and may cause
birth defects. Found in: synthetic fragrance, nail polish, hairspray, and
plastic materials.
Polyethylene glycol (PEG compounds): PEGs are widely used in
cosmetics as thickeners, solvents, softeners, and moisture-carriers.
Depending on manufacturing processes, PEGs may be contaminated with

Debbie Wood talking about her journey with Diabetes & Celiac that lead her to make tasty treats with her Chicago based company, No Denial Foods! LIVE!
BIO:
No Denial Foods Bakes Up ‘Decadent’ Treats for Health-Conscious
Diabetic Founder Recognizes Growing Demand for Low-Sugar, Grain-Free Snacks and Desserts
CHICAGO – Cookies, cake, pie and more. Like many, No Denial Foods founder and CEO Debbie Wood loves dessert.
But that’s a problem for Debbie, who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 9 and celiac disease in 2009.
“Every day used to be a struggle to find foods that I could eat, let alone enjoy,” she says.
How to be vigilant about her health, while still enjoying the occasional treat? Added sugars and simple starches are a mainstay in most snacks and desserts, including gluten-free products.
Debbie’s solution was to hit the kitchen and bake for herself, starting with a salty-sweet nut mix that she could eat on the go, on top of yogurt or sprinkled on fruit. Soon health-conscious friends, neighbors and co-workers – and their friends – clamored for the mix, prompting Debbie to launch No Denial Foods.
“Many people restrict their diets, whether by necessity or choice, but it doesn’t mean they don’t want dessert, too,” she says. “The treats were so delicious and made me so happy, I just had to share them.”
No Denial Foods now offers a whole line of low-sugar, grain-free treats including chocolate-raspberry cake pops, chocolate nut butter cups, pies and three flavors of what she calls her “decadent” nut mix.
By using limited amounts of natural sweeteners, like honey and maple syrup, and avoiding grains entirely, the company’s snacks and desserts minimize sugar and eliminate gluten. No Denial Foods also relies on a variety of nuts and seeds, which are rich in healthy fats.
The result? Flavorful treats that everyone – even those with health restrictions – can enjoy.
“You shouldn’t have to deny yourself something delicious, but that used to be my reality,” Debbie says. “I’m testament to the fact that you can have your cake and eat it, too.”

In the last episode of this podcast, Dr. Meggie gives concrete solutions to heal our nervous systems.
About Dr. Meggie Smith
On a daily basis I am amazed by people’s ability to heal and transform. After working with our office, patients are able to move, walk, and sit easier than they ever imagined possible. They sleep through the night for the first time in years and forgive family members after decades of heartache. People heal from conditions that medical doctors told them they would just have to learn to live with. These changes, large and small, continue to astound me.
The healing power of chiropractic is something I have been experiencing first-hand since I was in high school. Over the years, I have seen chiropractors for a range of physical, mental and emotional challenges. Now I get adjusted because it keeps me happy, healthy and able to function at my best.
I grew up on the North Shore and studied philosophy as an undergraduate at the University of Chicago. After a few years as an economic consultant, it was time for a career in something that I was passionate about. There were few things I believed in more deeply than in the role chiropractic played in improving my life. And so I enrolled at Life Chiropractic College West in California and received a doctorate in chiropractic. I have published papers in chiropractic journals, spoken internationally, and received awards for my research and writing. I have held leadership positions within a variety of chiropractic organizations. Currently, I devote most of my professional time to seeing patients

BIO
For two decades, Dr. Denise has been caring for her community in Bordentown, New Jersey at Evans Family Chiropractors. She is a 1991 graduate of Life University, and a 1987 graduate with a BS in Biology from The College of New Jersey. Utilizing a variety of techniques to suite each individual, she has extensive experience in caring for children, infant, and pregnant women. When she's not caring for patients in the office, she volunteers her time as the active Events Director for the League of Chiropractic Women. Her love of the profession also inspires her to participate in the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association, International Chiropractic Association, and New Jersey Chiropractic Society.
Dr. Denise approaches health from a holistic approach which is why she has always felt it necessary to stress the importance of diet and exercise to her patients as well. After practicing in the office for so long, Denise began to notice a huge void in healthy restaurant options in the area for her patients. All of the restaurants seemed the same—a lack of focus on nutrition and convenience. One night she awoke from a dream with a clear vision and a name. Dr. Denise is so excited to enter another business endeavor and finally bring this hip and healthy café concept offering quick take out options to life! Properly Fueled is anticipated to open in Spring of 2017 and will be located right next to Evans Family Chiropractors.
Dr. Denise's ultimate vision is that by educating people about healthy lifestyle choices she can make a positive change in their lives. She believes there is no greater gift than being able to assist someone in reaching their full health potential, and no joy quite like feeling healthy. Whether someone's goal is pain relief or improved mental or physical health, she aims to make their goals her goals.

Mary Drill talks about clients hiring her as their first personal trainer at the age of 88. When there is that fork in the road, take it no matter how old. It helps with mental health.

Mary has been a personal fitness trainer since 1988 when she established Body Mechanics by Drill, a personal training and fitness consulting business. Mary holds a BBA degree in finance and marketing from the University of Wisconsin - Madison and a Master of Science degree in Exercise Science from the University of Illinois at Chicago. She is also certified by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM).
Teaching group fitness started as a hobby in 1985. Eventually Mary's interest grew, leading her to mentor and train other group fitness instructors then move into personal fitness training. In 1988 Mary decided to pursue a Masters degree in exercise science with emphasis' on exercise physiology and kinesiology. At the same time she established Body Mechanics by Drill, a personal training company and in 1994 expanded by mentoring a small, select group of fitness trainers to help serve her growing client base. In 1996 Mary initiated an alliance with Accelerated Rehabilitation Clinics to grow her knowledge of fitness assessment including flexibility, strength and functional strength deficits. Most fitness training program design in the field was not taking into consideration this important information and many clients were being trained in a cookie cutter fashion so with her growing knowledge Mary launched Tools for the Trainer workshops in 2000. These workshops offered fitness trainers hands-on instruction in program design so they could customize programs to their clients' needs and goals.
It also helped the trainers develop an eye for proper movement. Tools for the Trainer workshops were ACE (American Council on Exercise) fitness approved for continuing education credits and Mary became an ACE. 1) Understanding that people have to MOVE and EXERCISE - Sounds like the same thing but its not. Talking about Joan Vernikos work on the cognitive, and disease related issues associated with lack of movement in our lives. No amount of exercise can combat the devastating effects of sitting.
2) Understanding that THERE ARE NO EFFECTIVE DIETS - Only a lifestyle that incorporates Whole, Organic, quality sourced foods will ever work. It is why I designed the Three Day Reset
3) As woman transition from 30-40s to 50-60 and beyond there is a huge opportunity to set have CHOICE in what the second and third acts of her life is going to look like. She needs to be dealing with her individual crap so she doesn't just keep repeating toxic patterns. Whether it is a sugar addiction or allowing toxic people to surround her, she must address and the demons and move forward if she is going to experience full abundant life for the best chapters.
4) E-Factor - Story of the dune buggies in the desert and who we are built for adventure and challenge. Keeps our brains firing and working, our bodies moving and truly is youth tonic.
5) Simplicity - Understanding that longevity comes from a balanced life. I think a lot of women spin through raising children and or having a crazy career. With age comes wisdom, and the opportunity to decide for her what is important and what is not and to bravely shed what is no longer serving her.
