Although life is full of highs and lows, more time is spent in those in-between moments. Determining how to spend your time on any day takes intentionality. This podcast is about doing the small everyday things which enable you to do the grand things in your marriage, home and family. Live a life you will remember. Invest your days in things that will last longer than you. Remember, your life is not a dress rehearsal. If you delay doing what is important, you might never have the chance to really do what you want to do.
In the silence there is a small quiet voice inviting listening with our whole being. The reality of listening to God is embodied in our breath, our body and the spirit of God. He is the giver of our life and our breath. While we live in a physical sense we are equally moving in a spiritual world. Profoundly, no life exists without the starting point of breath. When we concentrate our breath, body and the spirit together, holy listening is possible.

Creating your own protein bars is an excellent idea for so many reasons. My primary motivation is that these bars are high in protein. This grab and go item fits perfectly into a workout morning. Knowing that ingredients in your bar creates confidence in nutritional density. The no bake feature is an additional win. Finally, another compelling reason remains the cost savings versus spending $3 or more for a store bought choice.

Thoughts on HOME and FAMILY at www.nurturingmynest.com
Finding your people is serious business. Sometimes our people find us. Sometimes we have to say goodbye to a season and the people that we have loved. Sometimes we have to find new people. Sometimes we don't know what we are looking for in friendships. Sometimes we know that we need people to complete something deeply human in ourselves. To search for our people, we might ask ourselves these clarifying questions. Who am I looking for? What do I need in my people? When can I find my people? Where are my people? Why do I need people? How can I build my community of people? Choose with intention.

Now in its fifth decade, in vitro fertilization (IVF) and other reproduction technology have been the answer to many people's prayers for a family. However, this success has led to an excess of frozen embryos. Nearly 1.5 million babies are in a frozen orphanage. Many biological parents store embryos for further use.
When parents have completed their families, they have to decide what to do with the frozen embryos. Donating them to an infertile couple is a popular option. Fertilized babies can be given for adoption through the National Embryo Donation Center. Leslie Hollowell shares her story of embryo adoption and the gift of her son Hudson.

Parenting is hard work. The stages of childhood change rapidly. Before you realize it, it will be time to talk about dating. Approaching this subject with your child can be downright intimidating. Before you begin, know that today's dating culture is radically different from when you were a teen and young adult. Sexual promiscuity is rampant. Sexual identity, date rape, binge drinking, emotional cheating, sexting and a host of new and more shocking behavior is the normal for today's teens. Becoming more acquainted with today's culture is necessary is the on-going job of today's parents. Educate. Read. Listen.

As the mom of two beautiful daughters the topic of beauty materializes often. This conversation is intended to validate the beauty in your daughter and mine. It is imperative that we speak to the dehumanizing of our daughters by the culture that they live in daily. What are the messages that they hear about beauty? What do they hear about their beauty? Dehumanizing deprives a woman of dignity, respect, human qualities, personality and self-worth.
As a rough water lifeguard and an eager health enthusiast, I completely support physical exercise being part of raising a whole child. However, I struggle with the emphasis on sports in today's youth culture. While sports is about fun and exercise, it's benefit can be much greater. More importantly, I think that playing recreational sports offers a platform to talk about how to respond when winning and losing. Self-control, hard work ethic, determination, stamina and a never-give-up attitude last long after the game is over.

Welcome to season two! The life of faith is a journey. As we contemplate new beginnings, it is encouraging to consider starting from where you are today with purpose. God is a god of new beginnings. He embraces do-overs. Only I can make changes in me. I have to clean up the chaos in my own life if I am going to be an inspiration to others. As we practice pausing and really being present, we see more of God's gifts to us. By starting with the basics and growing beside a community, we can benefit from encouraging accountability. It is never too late to start from where you are. Finishing well is an honorable goal.

The year was 1818 the day before Christmas. On this Christmas over 200 years ago, possibly the most perfect Christmas song was birthed. A village schoolmaster and a church organist hurriedly mixed inspired words with a melody from a guitar. It was said that the words sang themselves. From this simple village in the Alps, an unlikely song celebrated a genesis.

Our little girls were beautiful, curly-headed and busy. We built a home in the country so they could swing in the trees and ride their bicycles. Consistently, we poured love and energy into helping them grow into strong women. Every little girl needs to know that she is heard and loved. She needs to know how to make friends, embrace her femininity and prepare to tackle her life as a woman. While we don't have all the answers, we have culled some of our best ideas from 28 years of parenting.
When I had my first boy, I was so nervous about being a boy's mom. What does a boy need from his mom and from his dad? Today's podcast covers how we can model Biblical living for our son and how we can develop him as a whole person. What are the skills that boys need? What do they need to know about respect and relationships? What is the healthy expectation for boys to make mistakes? What does it mean that "boys will be boys?"
Raising boys is hard work. If you are gifted with one of these wonderful creatures, here are some our best ideas for raising boys culled from our 28 years of parenting. We don't have all the answers, but we do have a few of them.
"There is a lot of difference between listening and hearing." G.K Chesterton. The posture of being a listener means you are listening with the intention of hearing. The word "listen" contains the same letters as the word "silent."
What is listening? What is not listening? Listening takes time. Is your listening impatient, inattentive listening or is it active receiving and responding with genuine hearing?
Today's episode is full of stories!! Don't miss it!
Freedom is not free. On this day, we remember some of our family members who served our great country. So, many of you have stories in your family of men and women who have sacrificed all. When a soldier is lost, not only are his dreams ended, his family goes on without him. Join us to hear stories of some of these men who served to keep us free.
If you are one of those who served, we thank you! We are glad you returned home safely. If you have lived without a loved one because they gave their life for our country, we thank you!!
We would love to hear your stories too. Send them to us at leah@nurturingmynest.com. If you would like to see the pictures of these young men, join our email list by sending your email to leah@nurturingmynest.com.
Our middle child, Mikayla, joined me in our studio to share her reflections on being raised in our home. While pursuing her graduate degree at seminary, I asked her what she appreciated about her childhood. Some of our questions were, "What would you mimic about your childhood?" "What do you appreciate about your growing up now that you did not appreciate when you were younger?" "Were you socialized as a homeschooler?" "What would you tell your younger self?"
If you are in the trenches of parenting at your house, take a listen to this young adult's thoughts. From hanging upside down in the trees in our back yard like a monkey, this former "curly girly" is pursuing God's purpose for her life.
Imagine a police officer pulling over your conversion van full of kids. He asks one of my kids to step out of the van. While you might think that I am terrified, I am actually trying hard not to laugh. Listen to today's podcast for the rest of the story.
If you are just getting started or in the trenches with parenting, you will want to hear these ideas for responding to the challenges of raising kids. With five kids, we continued to face all kinds of situations requiring creative solutions.

As you approach the summer, are you thinking about the importance of this summer in the life of your child? As parents, we likely have only 18 summers with a child in our home. What were your favorite summer memories as a childhood? What do you want your children to remember about their childhood? What tastes will remind them of their childhood? Will it be the lengthy evenings chasing fireflies and eating Dad's best from the grill? Will you use the longer stretches of summer hours to teach your children something important? Will you spend time making this summer memorable?
For some time I have been thinking about my words and how I can use them to give life. What if our words were life giving? What if the life they gave others launched a reverberation? Ephesians 4:29 encourages us to "Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace (or undeserved favor) to those who hear." The concept of edification is significant.
This podcast offers six ideas on HOW my words can be life-giving and six ideas about WHO needs life giving words?
Life giving words breathe invigorating energy. Don't miss the opportunity in your every day to be a giver of life.
