Women in the U.S. are under political, economic, social, and reproductive siege. The rights we fought for, like abortion rights, are now fully available in only nine states. The Trump regime has attacked diversity, equity, and inclusion programs as well as the employers offering such programs. As an illustration of the effects of these attacks, more than 300,000 African American women in the U.S. have lost their jobs. At the same time, women are joining their sisters worldwide in opting out of both marriage and childbearing despite the pressures of the Trump administration for women to return to the role of household slaves to their husbands.

Women labor intensively and extensively to create and maintain human life. Women's labor in Creating and raising children, establishing order and cleanliness, providing emotional care for our families, and maintaining all of this is more than substantial. However, it has been devalued in American society and often dismissed as instinct or pure emotional expression. Women’s labor in the home is not focused on creating a marketable service or commodity, and capitalists who cannot directly profit from that labor are to blame for its devaluation and societal degradation. We need to recognize, celebrate, and compensate that essential labor more than just with a Hallmark holiday once a year. Jacinda Ardern was the Socialist Labor Party Prime Minister of New Zealand for 8 years. She led with a politics of empathy, delivering her nation from COVID with just 25 deaths. In a horrific white nationalist attack by an Australian, masses of Muslims were killed and wounded while at prayer. She fostered deep solidarity between New Zealand and its Muslim community, conveying the message that they are one unified nation. In the words of Mohammed, she declared that an injury to one limb is an injury to the whole body. She is a model of a very different and badly needed kind of power. Jeffrey Epstein, who was arrested and charged with sex trafficking of minors and conspiracy to commit sex trafficking of minors in New York in 2019, was also accused of sexually assaulting underage girls for nearly two decades. Because he died in jail while awaiting trial, we may never know the extent of his sex trafficking ring or exactly who else may have participated in those heinous acts. Instead, we are left wondering whether or not he also provided blackmail opportunities for the U.S. and Israeli governments, as it appears he likely did precisely that. It also seems as if Donald Trump was an enthusiastic and willful participant in Epstein’s darkest schemes. In this episode, Dr. Fraad juxtaposes our capitalist system with sexual assault. Capitalist exploitation, like rape, requires a lack of connection and empathy for the workers one exploits. Capitalism encourages domination and disconnection from workers' human needs and wants. The rapist does the same. Rapists refuse to see their victim as a fellow human but only as an object to be exploited and dominated. While the majority of rape victims are women 10 percent are men yet another remnant of patriarchy.

In 2009 Richard Wilkinson and Kate Pickett wrote their best-selling book, "The Spirit Level" which showed how economic inequality spawned extensive social suffering.

Socialist visions of communal shared domestic labor and child rearing have existed in the past and exist in the present. In 1917 following the Russian Revolution the government changed the rules and created a domestic revolution. At the turn of the century in the United States over 200 large and established socialist communes existed. Domestic revolution was then considered a valuable means of revolutionary change.

Women traditionally occupy the role of “care worker” and learn to relate differently through the act of caring. Those care occupations, however, are some of the lowest paid and are highly undervalued. Other countries, such as New Zealand and Sweden, are exploring different ways of addressing both how children are raised in relation to gender as well as how to pay care workers a wage that reflects the skill and value of the work. In this episode of Capitalism Hits Home, Dr. Fraad draws on her therapeutic expertise to discuss psychological mechanisms people unconsciously rely on when facing a reality that is too much to bear. These tools—dissociation, denial, and projection—can happen in both our personal and political lives. Fraad looks at personal traumas from clients as well as societal traumas, such as war and police brutality, to explore how commonly humans rely on dissociation, denial, and projection to not face hard truths. In order to heal, both personally and as a society, however, we must learn to look at and call out these injustices. These psychological mechanisms serve an important purpose for survival, but the realities still exist and continue to take a toll.
In this episode of Capitalism Hits Home, Dr. Fraad continues her discussion of the recent Supreme Court decisions and asks: why were these decisions made when they do not align with the majority of American’s beliefs? When a system fails for the mass of people, fascism can develop to ensure that system continues. As the US becomes more and more divided, Fraad argues that we must remember our commonality as the employee class. Leftist victories in countries such as Chile, Colombia, and France remind us that when people unite and form coalitions, they win. We, the mass of Americans, must unite each of our movements—climate justice, BLM, feminism, LGBTQIA+, Indigenous rights, socialism, and more—in order to build a better world that reflects our values.

She argues that all of the SCOTUS decisions for 2022 share a common purpose. First, they help to create a capitalist authoritarian state enforced by unaccountable police. Secondly they divide the mass of people. They antagonize divisions between people and fuel culture wars. The goal is to create hierarchical and hostile divisions that keep Americans from uniting as an employee class and winning
“We have to accept that empire and militarism is not what’s going to save the world, it’s what’s going to destroy the planet.” In this episode of Capitalism Hits Home, Dr. Fraad continues discussing America’s problem with gun violence. Because the US never converted to a peacetime economy after WWII, it continues to spend billions waging wars, stockpiling military equipment, and funding overseas conflicts. This militaristic culture enables domestic terrorism and mass violence. To counteract this, we need to encourage our many separate social movements to join together and fight to redistribute the excessive military budget to universal health care, child care, affordable housing, decent wages, climate justice, and more.
In this episode of Capitalism Hits Home, Dr. Fraad looks at mass shootings in the US and in particular the most recent tragedy in Uvalde, Texas. She examines the psychological, emotional, political, and economic reasons the US is the world leader in mass murder, and suggests solutions to end this cycle of violence and death.
"Capitalism is really bad for our health.” In this episode of Capitalism Hits Home, Dr. Fraad discusses mental health through the lens of a 4-legged table of connection: intimate relationships, friends, larger groups such as PTAs, work, or political groups, and connection to your country and shared humanity with the world. Under capitalism, Fraad explains, each leg of the table is made very shaky. With abuse, alcoholism, crime, and suicide all going up, as well as unemployment and illness rising, it’s clear that our social fabric is breaking down. Cooperation and connection, the most important contributors to mental health, aren’t protected under capitalism. In a system that allows for such deprivation, our only antidotes are to have hope and create connection through political activeness, strikes, unionizations, and more. Hope is not passive, it can be an active way to build a better world.
With rising inflation rates, mass resignations, poor working conditions, and expensive housing, it’s clear that capitalism in the US is falling apart. To counter this, the right wing is working hard to repress each and every marginalized group in order to keep the working class divided. In this episode of Capitalism Hits Home, Dr. Fraad looks at that fascist push to maintain a hierarchy in family, faith, morality, and nationalism. American men are in trouble. The male sex role crushes tenderness and sensitivity in little boys. The only emotion they are freely allowed is anger. US males are disparaged for any emotional vulnerability and
tenderness.
The fertility rate in the US is at record lows. What difference does it
make? Why should we care? A child is a hope for the future. Having a child shows the confidence in a future in which one can support, nurture and raise a child. A full two-thirds of young Americans expect that they will never have that future.
Americans are far too often miserable. If we want to discover why people are upset, anxious, panicked and depressed, we have to see what is happening in their lives that agonizes them.
Our empire is dying.The American Dream of a stable family wage has disappeared. Prosperity gives way to precarity. Some of the symptoms of our empire’s dying are mass shootings, suicide, and addiction.
The US white family was based on a kind of household feudalism where women produced useful unpaid work in cooking cleaning, social outreach, emotional labor and child rearing. White males earned “family wages” that could support dependent women and children.
Those wages are no longer given. Capitalists have replaced them with cheap outsourced labor and machines. Women must work outside of the home to earn enough for family survival.
American men are in trouble. The male sex role crushes tenderness and sensitivity in little boys. The only emotion they are freely allowed is anger.
