I love my dog, but I love my child more. The following may reveal my own selfishness in that I don't want my child to choose what he desires (a life without Christ). Though I believe in freewill, I am almost to the point where I wish God did not grant it. I'd rather have my child "a robot" in Heaven with God and me than have him freely choose his eternal destination. I am concerned for a day when my son's sin takes him to the point of a totally seared conscience.
Though my son is not a drug addict, a drug addict gets to the point of addiction when he knows not what he does in harming his own body, mind, etc. Isn't any sin this way? We know not what we do. We, as fallible creatures, don't know what's best for us. Only our Creator knows this, and yet He allows us to choose wrongly?!? Why?!? Why would God take an animal to heaven while allowing a mother or father who would die for their child (a human being made in God's image, unlike an animal, and "worth more than the birds of the air") to be separated from him for eternity?
It is said that to have loved and then lost is better than to have never loved at all, but I'm not so sure right now. Pictures and memories of my son's "innocence" in childhood haunt me. Yet some say God wipes away such memories in Heaven, but don't you think we will know more, not less, in Eternity? To wipe that child from one's memory seems diminishing. Even to suggest annihilation (a theory I don't favor) would not soften the wounds of loss to a mother's heart. No longer existing seems to delegitimize any life. Even the truth of someday having a better understanding of God's holiness and justice regarding my own flesh and blood is gut wrenching (I agree we all deserve Hell).
Why are we to lay down our lives for sinners now in reaching them for Christ but will eventually rejoice in jubilation when the time of their destruction comes? Why would God have fashioned such motherly sentiments to unconditionally love and sacrificially nurture if we were to suffer this pain of eternal separation? If God loves me and if God knew my child would not follow Him, why did He bring about a world allowing him to be created? Or to survive infancy? Theoretically, even abortion (God forbid!) would have been a better outcome as, if I'm correct in my theology, such would eventually reunite us. Is abortion a virtue in that all babes are saved from damnation? God forgive the thought!
We are told to be fruitful and multiply, but why even risk having children if there's a possibility of having even one child…or grandchild or great grandchild or a great-great separated from you forever? Obedience beyond understanding? I don't want one from my family tree or one acquaintance or even one stranger to be lost! The only remedy I see to this scenario as we are to love even our enemies is universal reconciliation, also a theory I do not favor...because of free will! Can you help me with these excruciating dilemmas? For my sanity's sake I have to believe all my children will be with God in eternity, but since I don't believe universalism is biblical, what of those others who will be separated eternally from loved ones? Is the only answer to trust God? Thank you greatly for your time; I appreciate any help you may provide this hurting mama.

One of my favorite arguments for the existence of God is the moral argument. To say that the moral argument has caused a stir in the waters of philosophy would be a gross understatement. The syllogism has made such an impact that committed atheists debate amongst themselves as to which premise they ought to reject. The popular version of the moral argument can be formulated like this:
- If God does not exist, objective moral values and duties do not exist.
- Objective moral values and duties do exist.
- Therefore, God exists.
Although I believe that this version of the argument is sound, in order to counter objections by atheist philosophers like Wielenberg, I often share modified versions of the argument that do not focus on objective moral values but on objective purpose. List to this to learn how one can modify and improve the moral argument when discussing with atheists to show how faith in God can be reasonable!

While recording our podcasts discussing Tim's response to Guillaume Bignon, I realized I'd disagreed with something I'd written down on our notes. Rather than cut off recording to discuss it, I decided to keep the cameras rolling so-to-speak, and both Tim and I liked the free flowing discussion that ensued. So I figured, why not make it into a bonus episode?
Since this wasn't necessarily meant to be released, keep in mind that not everything we say is our official positions on the topics at hand. We're likely both wrong at points in this episode (probably all episodes to be fair), and after closer inspection we might retract what we said. If you haven’t heard by now, Tim wrote a book. It’s a good book. You should buy it and read it. However, some people thought it was a not good book. One person in particular, philosopher Guillaume Bignon, wrote a 50 page refutation of Tim’s book. Tim wrote an article as a rejoinder to this refutation. Now we’re talking about it.

What a week, huh? It feels like every morning we wake up and there's news saying that we should gather with fewer people. How are we supposed to reconcile this scary situation with a God who says he loves us? Tim and I wrestle with that question in this episode.
We also spend some time talking about why Christians have the most reason for hope among anyone. We talk about what we as Christians can be doing, both through prayer and through action to live out our faith during a time when we cannot physically gather with others.

Today, Tim and I thought we'd tackle some criticism that many Christians receive regarding the phrase "thoughts and prayers" being used after a tragedy rather than "real action." We both think that criticism is misplaced, even if you don't believe Christianity is true. I show how authentic Christians who actually take the time to pray are actually taking the most action they possibly can, and thus this criticism is unwarranted.
Tim follows up with a discussion how we as Christians can be confident that God actually does listen to and respond to our prayers. Hint: it involves Molinism.

Sorry for the late episode everyone! That’s the struggle when you forget to upload the episode before you go to work. Fortunately, that’s the last you’ll hear of me this week, as this interview is one that Tim did with a youth pastor at his church.
It’s a great conversation that we think you’ll get a lot out of. Hearing how Tim interacts with people who maybe haven’t studied the material as in-depth as he has is very beneficial. Today on the podcast we contrast two different speeches given by two different Hollywood movie stars who won two different awards. Thandie Newton won an Emmy and had some interesting comments about God that we wanted to take a look at. Chris Pratt also won an award, and we wanted to contrast the speech he gave which also referenced God, but in a much different way.
The difference between the two speeches was quite stark, and we thought it would be a good idea to highlight both of them to show the polar opposites we have in Hollywood today. Hopefully, Pratt’s speech can serve as hope for Christians everywhere that are concerned about the state of Hollywood today.

There’s a bit of a role reversal in this episode. Tim interviews me about my favorite argument for God’s existence: the Ontological Argument. Not only is the argument extremely controversial, but it also has an incredibly rich intellectual history, so it makes for a fascinating episode.
Even if you don’t find the Ontological Argument convincing (many Christians don’t), I think there is value in discussing it. The concept of a maximally great being is a very fruitful theological idea that can help to resolve disputes between different theological positions.

As we continue commenting on the Big Think video, what became apparent to us is that Mr. Aslan desperately wants the reason why Donald Trump was elected to have nothing to do with Hillary Clinton. But, as we talk about in this episode, his election was much more about how bad of a candidate Hillary Clinton was than anything to do with Trump’s merits.
In fact, one could even say that Donald Trump’s best quality in this recent election was his ability to not be Hillary Clinton. The idea that most evangelicals voted for him for any other reason other than to stop Hillary Clinton just does not seem to be very plausible. Tim and I say as much in the podcast.

We’re going to be talking about a video by Big Think that tries to understand why evangelicals voted for Donald Trump for president. The man in the video, Reza Aslan, theorizes about several different reasons he believes that evangelicals acted out of character and voted for a man he did not think they would have voted for.
Both Tim and I believe this video completely misses the whole reason Donald Trump was elected. It seems to us that Mr. Aslan is reaching for some explanation that is completely unnecessary. We talk more about it in the podcast.

John Limanto comes back to talk about the problem of divine hiddenness. Divine hiddenness refers to the idea that, if God were to exist, we might expect him to reveal himself more fully to more people. The fact that some people do not feel as though God has been revealed to them might be thought of as an issue to the theist, particularly one who believes that God is all-loving and desires all humanity to know him.
John has written about this topic and provides us with some good insights as to why this isn’t really a problem for the theist. He questions many of the assumptions inherent in this objection and by the end of the episode I think it’s clear this isn’t a great objection to the existence of God.
Not only do we talk about the intellectual problem, but we also deal with the more pastoral question of helping someone who doesn’t feel God’s presence. John gives his thoughts on how to counsel someone through a situation like that. Really good stuff, particularly for those of us who have struggled with this issue.
This is a perfect episode to share with a friend who might be doubting if God is really there in their life. Reach out to them and hopefully this episode can help them in their walk.

John Limanto joins the podcast this week! For those of you who do not know, John Limanto is a 17-year-old guy from Indonesia who is one of the deepest thinkers in the Christian apologetics and theology circles. In this episode, we talk about what it’s like to be into apologetics and theology at a young age and how that affects one’s ministry.
John is a really fun and energetic guy who I highly encourage you all to check out. He’s written several articles on the FTM website, so be sure to look him up. We don’t talk much philosophy or theology in this episode, but he’ll be back next week to blow your mind.

We’ve got Dr. Jacobus Erasmus on the show for this episode, who is likely one of the smartest people we’ll have on the podcast. In this episode we talk about how he met Tim and the contributions he makes to Freethinking Ministries, including making Tim appear much smarter than he actually is. Not only that, but Dr. Erasmsus talks to us about the application of computer science to philosophy, as well as his book on the Kalam cosmological argument.
In the middle of the episode, Dr. Erasmsus gives a brief assessment of the argument from the impossibility of an actual infinite that is commonly used to support the beginning of the universe. He talks about why he prefers other arguments to this one in support of the Kalam. Very interesting stuff, so be sure to listen closely.

That’s right, it’s another Q&A episode about free will! What can we say, we love to talk about it! In this episode, we look at a reader question dealing with the evil that happens to devoted Christians and babies. So yeah, not a light and breezy topic at all!
This certainly is a question that is common among non-Christians. Why would God allow evil to happen to babies? Maybe they can understand so-called “regular evil,” but the idea of something horrible happening to the most innocent among us is simply unthinkable (and with good reason I might add).
Fortunately, Tim has written an article pertaining to this very topic, and he also does an excellent job answering this question within the podcast. Being prepared to answer this question will help to open doors for you whenever they may appear.

In the second part dealing with the problem of evil, Tim comes to the incredible conclusion that not only is God’s allowing evil consistent with his moral character, but it actually would be EVIL for God to eradicate evil! You’ll definitely want to hear his argument (or you can read it at the link below).
It’s likely clear after listening to this episode that understanding Molinism is a huge part of how Tim and I answer the problem of evil. As I always say, if you’ve got a theological problem, sprinkle a little Molinism on it!

After hearing a bunch of arguments FOR God’s existence, it’s important to understand what the other side has to offer in terms of arguments AGAINST God’s existence. Most of the time, this boils down to the problem of evil, without a doubt one of the toughest questions for the Christian to answer.
However, it is not without an answer, as Tim explains throughout this episode. The problem of evil seems fairly intimidating at first, but I think it can be answered fairly well through the use of the so-called “Free Will Defense.” Definitely something Tim and I can get behind!

Finally, we’re at the last episode on Molinism (although we certainly will be dealing with it in many future episodes). In this episode, Tim and I interact with one of the most common objections to Molinism: the grounding objection. Many opponents of Molinism feel as though this quite a strong argument against Molinism, but Tim and I don’t really feel its force.
In fact, as Tim shows in this episode, if the grounding objection were to be a good objection, then it follows logically that Open Theism is true! Now, this is hardly a problem for the Open Theist, but, for the Calvinist (who commonly presses this objection), this is a huge issue!

Both of these issues illustrate some points about religious liberty that Tim and I wanted to highlight. I think you’ll find our perspectives fairly unique and interesting, even if you may not agree with what we have to say. I know you’ll find it polarizing to say the least!

Finally, we’re finishing up the moral argument for God’s existence. In this episode, we talk about the second premise and conclusion, primarily focusing on defending the existence of objective moral values and duties. This premise isn’t one that is typically denied, but it’s a good idea to know how to respond to some objections.
Very few people deny the objectivity of moral values and duties. It would mean things like the horrors committed by Joseph Stalin and the communists were not actually wrong. We merely have a difference of opinion with him. Obviously, this is not true! When pressed, most people will admit the second premise of the argument.

We’re finishing up this week with our interactions with Erik Wielenberg’s proposed model for accommodating objective morality on an atheistic worldview. One of the points Tim mentions is that, on Wielenberg’s view, even if successful, morality doesn’t seem to matter!
Sure, perhaps his model can accommodate objective morality (though we wouldn’t even go that far), but there’s no “or else” that makes these proposed “ethical facts” have any ultimate significance to our lives. And that is one of the biggest weaknesses of his view.

Wielenberg is an atheist philosopher at Depauw University, and he purports to have a model by which the atheist can hold to objective morality. Needless to say, this episode was quite interesting!
The objection we talked about in this episode isn’t one you’re likely to come across in 95% of your everyday interactions, but it doesn’t hurt to have a good response in your back pocket either!

The Moral Argument for God’s existence is one of the most powerful that the Christian has. Tim and I begin discussion of the first premise of the argument in this episode. We talk about Sam Harris’ attempt to ground objective morality in human flourishing and conclude that this attempt is unsuccessful.
The great thing about this type of argument is that it’s quite simple to learn how to defend. Most people have some sort of intuition about morality, and thus it’s easy to find a common language by which to communicate the argument.

Finally, we’ve reached the conclusion of the Kalam cosmological argument. This is Tim’s favorite part, as there is so much we can learn about God merely from the conclusion that the universe has a cause. The Kalam is such a simple and powerful argument for God’s existence. It may seem rather insignificant at first, but after one understands what exactly the cause of the universe must be, it seems it must be a thing like God.

Listen closely to this one, as it’s very easy to get lost while defending the second premise of the Kalam. Fortunately for you, Tim takes you through exactly what you need to know for 95% of all of your interactions using this argument.
This premise of the Kalam is a tough one for me to defend, as I am not very good with a lot of the science that is talked about in support of it. But what I love about this argument is that, we, as Christians, are arguing in the same way as the mainstream scientific community! Science is not our enemy! It is so useful in defending premises in arguments that have theological implications in their conclusions.
I know this is a long episode but be sure to listen as many times as you need in order gain a basic understanding of the argument. Even if you don’t understand a lot of the science & philosophy talked about in this episode, don’t be discouraged. We all had to start somewhere.

Yes, it’s the Kalam cosmological argument this week! It’s one of the simplest and most powerful arguments we as Christians can use. It also happens to be one of Tim’s “Mount Rushmore” arguments, so it’s definitely an important one to understand and have in your toolbelt.
Tim gives a fairly comprehensive defense of the first premise in this episode. He takes you through most of the objections you might hear when running this argument, so you will be well prepared to defend your faith using the Kalam.

It’s the final episode on the FAAN! Don’t worry, if you haven’t listened to the first two episodes on the argument, we recap a bit of what we talked about. But seriously, you need to listen to those episodes (come on, they’re called parts 1 & 2 for a reason!). We’ve reached the conclusions of the argument that have some very interesting consequences.
This argument deductively proves that humans possess libertarian free will. We truly are free to choose! Not only do most atheists reject this idea, but many Christians do as well. In fact, Tim talks about a few different instances in which he gave this argument and received pushback from Christians, not atheists!
Not only do we have libertarian free will, but we also possess a soul. This soul provides us with good reason for thinking that the biblical view of God is the correct one, as Tim demonstrates in his abductive conclusion.
It’s so important that you understand the implications of the conclusions of your arguments, as what you are arguing for is actually true! These conclusions aren’t just vague concepts that don’t mean anything, but they actually have an impact on your life. Remember that as you share the show this week. You’re giving someone else truth.

It’s the next episode on the FAAN! I try and push back on premises 3 and 4 of the argument, of which 3 is by far the one most taken issue with. In order to defend any good argument, you need to be prepared to answer objections of all sorts. Never be surprised by the same objection twice!

Atheists love to label themselves as freethinkers, but as Tim Stratton argues, this is actually an oxymoron! In this episode, Tim and I discuss the Freethinking Argument Against Naturalism (affectionately abbreviated as FAAN). This argument was Tim’s first ever argument he crafted on his own, so it was interesting to get the backstory of how he came up with it.
Tim gives an overview and defense of the entire argument, which is quite a lot to undertake in one episode, which is why this is only part 1. If you need to re-listen a few times to make sure you’ve got it down, we encourage you to do so!

Hello everyone, and welcome to the Freethinking Podcast! In this introductory episode, Tim Stratton and myself, Scott Olson, have a conversation about Freethinking Ministries, the Christian apologetics & theology ministry started by Stratton himself.
If you’re listening to this podcast, you likely have taken 1 Peter 3:15, which says “but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect,” to heart. We hope to, as these episodes come out, underscore exactly why it is so crucial that every single Christian have a functional understanding of apologetics.
You guys are all in for a great ride. Tim is a brilliant thinker, and I get the privilege of asking him questions and acting as a guide for our conversation. I hope you take advantage of listening and continually share the show, so that we may better equip the church to engage the culture!
