Catching Up with Lancers from the Past reconnects with former Longwood College and Longwood University student-athletes, faculty, staff and coaches. Lancers Past is an independently produced podcast not affiliated nor associated with Longwood University.
When former Longwood Associate AD Michelle Meadows introduced Alex Ricker-Gilbert as the new Director of Compliance in 2012, she said he was one of the bright young stars of college athletics. Now in 2026, Alex leads Jacksonville University (FL) as Senior VP and Athletic Director. In 10 years, he has built a student-centered athletic department with the help of a talented pipeline -- former Longwood professionals and student-athletes. Alex shares lessons learned in his two years at Longwood and how it shaped his professional career.

This is part two of a two-part series. Former Longwood Pitcher Wyatt Bunch is country strong. The Northern Neck native learned how to maximize his talents and overcome limitations. As a 6-4, 180 senior in high school, he was mostly recruited by DIII schools. His gamble to attend DI Longwood produced long term success as the Lancers advanced to the championship game of the 2026 Big South tournament and won 34 games after winning only 14 in 2025.
This is part one of a two-part series. At Longwood, Wyatt Bunch was far from an overnight success. Showing up on campus as a 6-4, 180-pound freshman pitcher, the Northern Neck native filled out to 6-4, 235 and evolved into an inspirational leader and mentor. As a senior in the 2026 Big South tournament, Wyatt's Lancers came out of the losers' bracket to force the winner take all championship game vs. USC-Upstate. Despite losing the final, the Lancers posted a 34-27 record, tying the most wins in school history since the 2007 season (34-19).
Rohn Brown received the Page Cook Axson McGaughy Lifetime Loyalty Award at Longwood University on June 5, 2026. The award is awarded periodically to honor alumni volunteer service to the university through active participation in alumni or university affairs, faithful and continued support in expanding the influence and prestige of Longwood University, and a history of philanthropic giving to Longwood.

Former Longwood Baseball standouts, Doug Toombs and John "Turk" Crosby were featured in Faces in the Crowd in the June 9, 1980 edition of Sports Illustrated for leading NCAA DIII baseball in batting average and stolen bases, respectively. Doug talks about hitting .565 as a freshman and Turk explains how he earned the title, The Surgeon of Steal. The guys also talk about the lack of stolen bases in amateur and professional baseball. From the pitching circle, Libby Morris helped make Longwood Softball history. As a new member of the Big South Conference in 2013, the Lancers won their first conference championship and Libby was named tournament MVP. Two years later, Libby repeated as MVP and Longwood won their second title in three years. After 10 years of college coaching, Libby is in her second year as a high school counselor in Shenandoah County. With husband Daniel, the Bowmans are proud parents of a two-year-old daughter.
Amy Bradley and Nikki Hall shared the Lady Lancer backcourt for three seasons. Nikki was the point guard and Amy was an athletic scorer that loved to shoot the three. In this bonus episode, Nikki reflects on her time with Amy as a friend and teammate. Nikki is a Real Estate Agent with CENTURY 21 Realty in Farmville, Va. In this episode, her brother, Brad, talks about trying to find Amy through IP addresses, Amy's experience at Longwood-on and off the basketball court, the equity of resources for missing person cases, and much more. In this episode, Amy's brother Brad critiques the recent Netflix documentary, Amy Bradley is Missing. He also discusses how the case has affected his family for 28 years. The tables are turned as Chris Tunstall, past president of the Longwood Alumni Board, interviews Rohn Brown, the regular host of the Lancers Past Podcast and a noted Longwood Athletics historian. Rohn will receive the Page Cook Axson McGaughy Lifetime Loyalty Award on June 5 for his continued philanthropic giving and unique initiatives and service that benefit the university.
Cindy Ho landed her first golf head coaching job at Longwood College in 1992, following the legendary Dr. Barbara Smith. Fresh out of graduate school, Cindy embraced the challenge. Her Lady Lancer golfers won national championships in 1993 and 1995, and 10 golfers were named All-American 18 times. Now, in her 24th season at UNC-Wilmington, she has won seven conference titles and advanced to the NCAA regionals eight times. A native of Canada, she received her United States citizenship in May 2024. Four-time All-American Karla Roberson (Rasmussen), Longwood '98, also comments on her former coach.
Terri Sawyer is synonymous with playing, coaching and officiating, mostly field hockey. As a senior, she led Longwood College (now Longwood University) to a sixth-place finish in the 1975 AIAW/National Field Hockey Assoc. tournament. The '75 team was named to the 2026 LU Athletic Hall of Fame. Terri taught health and physical education for 30 years in the Virginia Beach Public Schools and coached prep soccer for 19 years. The Virginia Beach native officiated high school field hockey for 46 years and on the college level. Now, she competes in US Senior Pickleball tournaments in Virginia and along the East Coast.
For Scott Abell, coming to Longwood in the fall of 1988 was an easy decision. Former Longwood Baseball coach Buddy Bolding made him an offer he could not refuse. In his four-year career, the Lancer catcher compiled a .336 batting average and led the Lancers to the final four of the 1991 NCAA Division II CWS. Shortly after graduation, he reunited with his first love, football. After coaching high school and college teams to conference and state championships, he is in his first year as the Dunlevie Family head coach at Rice University in Houston TX.
Known at Longwood as Billy Dunn (Class of '91), William's story is one of the ages. Growing up in challenging neighborhoods, he defied the odds and earned his Associates, Bachelors, Masters and Doctorate while fueling his passion for philanthropy. As founder of the Dunn Foundation, William received the President's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2024 for his community outreach in Southern California and Metro Washington DC.

Recruited by Longwood to play field hockey, Julie Dayton picked up lacrosse from her college coach. With her speed and athleticism, she developed into a two-time All-American and a member of the US National Team. For one season, no one in Longwood Women’s Basketball history did it better than Kiki McIntyre. She racked up 130 steals and averaged 3.82. Both ranked her top 3 in the nation. After graduation, she started her new career as a paralegal with a major law firm in Richmond, Va. As a member of Longwood College’s first softball team in 1981, Lynne Gilbert remembers the humble beginnings. After Longwood, she poured her love for teaching and coaching into a 39-year career with Chesterfield County Public Schools. Coach Gil may be best known for her 18 years as the Head Coach of the Manchester High School Softball where she won seven district titles and a state championship in 1996. Lynne, now retired, teaches drivers education.
Kelly Brown’s love for golf runs much deeper than her four years on the Longwood golf team. After attending an LPGA tournament at Kingsmill in Williamsburg, she appreciated the behind-the-scenes world of golf. Kelly managed professional golf tournaments and learned from entertainment experts such as Disney. She found her calling and is now the Vice President of Impact at First Tee in Greater Richmond
On Sunday, March 10, 2024, the Longwood Lancers cruised to an 85-59 win over UNC-Asheville to earn their second Men’s Basketball Big South Conference tournament championship in three years. Trey Hicks was rehabbing a knee injury and planned to watch the game from the sidelines. But with Elijah Tucker out with a leg injury and Johan Nziemi disqualified early in the second half, Trey volunteered to play and sacrificed a year of eligibility. Trey describes his Longwood journey from the joy of earning a basketball scholarship and advancing to the NCAA Tournament to the lows of season altering injuries.

Michael Christmas transferred from JMU to Longwood in August 2021 with high expectations. He eventually delivered and then some. As a member of Longwood’s 2023-2025 teams, the triple threat scorer racked up 1,000+ points and earned all-tournament honors as the Lancers won the Big South Conference Championship in 2024. For Gray Stabley, Longwood College was the perfect springboard. She competed for three years for legendary gymnastics coach Ruth Budd, earned her BS in Math, and found her first professional passion in meteorology. After forecasting the weather for 16 years, she hit the road with her husband, Rob, and moved freight across America as an over-the-road truck driver. Armstrong came to Longwood as a recruited basketball player, but he struggled to balance books and ball. After one year, he was on academic probation. With the help of close friends such as teammate Ron Orr and a renewed sense of direction, Adrian applied himself. At Longwood, he was named to the Dean’s list and completed his BS in Psychology. In 1990, he earned his Juris Doctorate from Pace University (NY). Known for 10 years as the Honorable Adrian Armstrong, he now presides as a federal Judge for the Elizabeth (NJ) Immigration Court.
Bill Reinson’s dream was to be a Division I Basketball Head coach. After 10 years as an assistant men’s coach at UNC-Greensboro and Longwood, he was named interim and then permanent Head coach for the Longwood women in 2010. He and the Lady Lancers shocked the Big South by advancing to the finals of the tournament in 2013, Longwood’s first year as a member. Reinson was named 2013 Virginia Women's Basketball Coach of the Year by the Richmond Times-Dispatch. He resigned as head coach in 2018 and moved back to his native Arizona. He now lives in Southside Virginia and is the university’s Human Resources Manager.

For every Big South Conference trophy that Longwood wins, Troy Austin deserves at least a pat on the back. In his 12 years as athletic director and the first in the Division I era, Austin helped bring Longwood into the Big South and hired coaches that brought conference championships to Farmville. Troy Austin left Longwood and returned to his alma mater at Duke in October of 2018 as the Senior Associate Athletics Director for Internal Affairs. He now oversees all athletics fundraising for the Blue Devils as the Deputy Athletic Director for Development.
As a left-handed pitcher for Head Coach Buddy Bolding, Tripp Metzger enjoyed working behind the scenes and fueling the success of his teammates such as MLB draftees Jeremy Knicely and LaRon Wilson. Tripp followed his father and a long line of Longwood Baseball Alumni to teach and coach in high school. The 2003 Longwood graduate describes how his high school and college coaches helped mold his own philosophy as a servant leader. Metzger is in his 11th year as the activities director at Mechanicsville High School.

Known as a 6-7 post player at Longwood, Zac reflects on the 2022 Big South Conference Championship season and his new role and development in professional basketball. Billy Catron and Ron Jones took similar baseball paths, but their experiences were different. The pair won a state championship at Liberty High (Bedford Co., Va.) and played on a JUCO power at Ferrum. They reunited at Longwood and shocked the baseball world by beating Valdosta State in the regionals and advancing to the 1982 NCAA DII College World Series. Isaiah Wilkins started college basketball as a 17-year freshman at Virginia Tech. After three new coaches at Tech and Wake Forest, “Chico” found his final home at Longwood. The Winston-Salem native lead the Lancers to two 20-win seasons including the 2022 Big South Conference championship. After a brief stint in Luxembourg last season, Wilkins looks for his next professional basketball opportunity.
Abbey Freese, now known as Abbey Taylor, made Longwood women’s basketball history. She was part of the first recruiting class as the university started the reclassification process to NCAA Division I. And she was on the last Lancer team coached by Hall of Famer Shirley Duncan. As a sports marketing professional, a wife, and mother of two boys, Abbey Duncan's lessons every day. She received her Masters in Sports Administration from St. Thomas University in Florida and is now the senior account executive and marketing director for Metro Group Miami.
If you did not follow Longwood men’s tennis from 1981-1983 or hang out with members of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity, you may not know Bryan Kersey. But if you watched ACC basketball in the 90s and into the 2000s, chances are you saw him on the court – in black and white stripes. After earning a reputation as one of the nation’s best college basketball referees, Bryan is now the supervisor of officials for 11 conferences including the ACC, A-10, CAA and the Big South. Growing up as the son of long time NBA official Jess Kersey, Bryan describes how he and his over 200 referees strive for perfection in a challenging and changing game.
Katie re-lives her basketball playing and coaching career at Coker College as she faced off against Longwood legend Shirley Duncan. She talks about her stepmother, former UCLA and Minnesota WBB Coach Ellen Mosher Hanson, and her Mount Rushmore of mentors. Katie shares how she bounced back when her coaching contract was not renewed and the importance of relationship building.
After leaving Longwood in the fall of 2019, Katie started her career in athletic fundraising at Appalachian State. Now, the Senior Associate Athletic Director/ Director of Development at George Mason, she talks about her current role and shift to fund raising. Katie explains why she left college basketball coaching and the challenges of competing in today’s NIL landscape.
After five years at Longwood, Anne-Hamilton LeRoy is back home. She will debut as head coach of the girls’ varsity basketball team the Seneca High in South Carolina in the 2024-25 season. The all-time leading scorer in Seneca history built an impressive resume. At Longwood, she scored 1,465 points, was named All-freshman and second team all-Big South Conference. Plus, she helped the Lancers win a Big South Championship and a NCAA tournament game in 2022. Anne earned her B.S. in Kinesiology and will finish her MBA in June 2024.
Ricky Yahn begins his 12th season as head coach of the men’s basketball team at Concordia University in Ann Arbor Michigan. After spending two years at Longwood, the 28-year-old Yahn was named head of the NAIA member Cardinals in April 2013. As a player, Yahn left his mark in Wheeling, WV. At Central Catholic High, the Hall of Fame guard was All-state and won a state championship. At Wheeling Jesuit University, the three-year starter led the Cardinals to two NCAA Division II appearances and scored 1,467 career points.
As a transfer from Frank Phillips JC, Dave Strothers made his two Longwood years count. As a senior, he led the Lancers in scoring and rebounding and made 87% of his career free throws. For the last 30 years, he applies the same demeanor as a school administrator. Strothers is the principal of Mayfield Woods Middle School in Howard Co., Md. Dave faced his biggest test in 2012 as he and his family escaped their burning house. Dave commends his community for their generousity and former Longwood Head Coach Cal Luther.
Roger Strong and Greg Gilliam were pioneers. They enrolled at Longwood in the first year of full co-education in 1976-77 and were on the first Men’s Basketball team. In the last game of a 2-12 season, their beloved teammate - Jimmy Yarbrough made history in a 134-93 loss. The 5-6 Yarbrough scored 46 points and made 16 field goals, records that still stand today. Byron Bracey was a citizen leader long before it became part of Longwood's admissions literature. Raised in a family of educators, Byron made Longwood history. He enrolled in the second year of co-education in the fall of 1977. Lettering three years on the men’s basketball team, he played his part as the Lancers shocked the nation with an appearance in the NCAA Division III Final Four. The 1981 graduate left Longwood as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army and retired 20 years later as Major Byron Bracey.
Shortly after Longwood College became fully co-ed, Robert Boyd, Tim White, and company set the tone for Longwood Men’s Golf. Arriving in 1977-78, Longwood experienced early success. White was named Division III All-American in 1980 and is the only golfer named to the Longwood Athletic Hall of Fame (2016). In 1982, the Lancers won the College Division of the Virginia Intercollegiate Championship. Robert is retired and lives in Daniel Island, S.C. Tim is the golf pro at Lake Chesdin Golf Club in Chesterfield County.
In Michelle Meadow’s 17-year career at Longwood University, she relished her time helping student-athletes. She worked her way up from assistant athletic director for compliance to LU's athletic director. As a four-year starter on the Virginia Tech women’s softball team, she was elected to the Hokie’s Hall of Fame in 2010. The three time Academic All-American is now the Vice President and Chief Operations Officer for the National Junior College Athletic Association.
Jamal Allen wasted no time in becoming a professional baseball umpire. Six months after graduating from Longwood, he headed to the Wendelstedt Umpire School and completed a season in the Northwoods League, a collegiate wooden bat circuit. Last season, Jamal started his professional career in the Florida Complex Rooke League and is expected to umpire in Class A baseball in either the California League, Carolina League, or Florida State League for the 2024 season. In just his fourth year at Longwood, Ron Carr’s 1993-94 team made their mark. They finished the season 23-6, #19 in the nation and won the opening game in the program’s first appearance in the NCAA Division II playoffs. And - they also won 20 straight games. Carr remains the only Longwood men’s coach ever to earn two consecutive trips to the NCAA playoffs. Ron retired from full-time teaching in Chesterfield County and continues to coach boys’ basketball at Cosby High.
This is a bonus episode and part two of a two-part series. As a utility player, Tim Lowery totaled 49 at bats and batted .285 over two seasons - a solid, but not spectactular career. But for Coach Buddy Bolding and the Longwood baseball team, Lowery was more than a teammate. He was an unofficial coach with a baseball mind. This is part one of a two-part series. Long before Longwood, Tim Lowery wanted to be a health and physical education teacher and baseball coach. Now retired after 36 years of public-school service in Chesterfield County, Tim touches on Longwood baseball and how it shaped his high school coaching and teaching career. With 470 victories, one state championship, three regional titles, and 11 district regular-season crowns, Tim is supported by his own all-star team, wife Lori and sons Jake and Luke. Former Lancer centerfielder and base stealer Turk Crosby comments on Lowery in the beginning of the episode.
Born with a curiosity about how things work, Mary Beth Wusk found her calling at NASA. The 34-year veteran is now the Senior Leader of the NASA Engineering and Safety Center at the Langley Research Center in Hampton. The 1989 graduate and Physics major lettered two years as a setter for the Longwood volleyball team before the program was discontinued. She earned a second B.S. in Electrical Engineering from ODU.
When you talk about academic and athletic excellence AND service to peers and your university, Madison Hommey is hard to beat. She completed two degrees from Longwood in five years and was a fixture at midfield for the soccer team. Known as Maddie, she also received the Dan Daniel Senior Award for Scholarship and Citizenship and a Graduate Fellowship from the Big South Conference. This fall, Maddie starts her teaching career at Jefferson Forest High School in Bedford County.
Eliot Dix is the second consecutive Longwood graduate to transfer to a university in a Power 5 conference to play baseball. He is headed to the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill to compete for the starting job at third base. In three years at Longwood, Eliot batted 340, 341 and 347 and is the only Lancer ever named All-Big South Conference three times. Eliot earned a B.S. in Sociology with a minor in Communication Studies.
Joe Kaminski first came to Longwood in 2014 as the Athletic Events and Game Operations Manager and returned a year later as the Assistant Athletic Director for Marketing Operations. In July 2023, he left the Colonial Athletic Association to reunite with Jeff Bacon, ASUN Conference commissioner. In this episode, Joe talks about his 15 years in athletics administration, conference realignment in the CAA, and his new adventure with the ASUN as Senior Associate Commissioner for Sports Administration.
In May 2023, Mallory was named an assistant women’s basketball coach at Division I Northern Kentucky. As a dual sport student-athlete in basketball and softball, Longwood fans remember her enthusiasm and grit. She received her BS in Business Administration in 2021 and was a two-time Big South Conference All-Academic team selection. Mal started her coaching career as a graduate assistant at Valdosta State (GA) with an assist from Katie Pate, Associate Athletics Director for Development at Appalachian State.
Kelly Church quickly realized that making the Longwood men’s basketball team was not realistic. As an aspiring basketball coach, he poured into his obsession and became a student manager. This fall, Kelly will start his 26th year as the head coach at Hedgesville High School in eastern West Virginia. He will also be inducted into the school’s Class of 2023 athletic hall of fame.
Former Head Coach Jhonnatan Medina Alvarez not only elevated the Lancer tennis programs (2017-2021), but his own stock as well. As a student and coach, Jhonnatan graduated magna cum Laude with a B.S. in Business Administration from Longwood and teamed with professor Dr. Laura Poe to pen Results Generate Results. Before Longwood, he ran his own tennis academy in Orlando and was a world class tennis player in his native Venezuela. Medina Alvarez is now a professional pickleball player and a SCRUM master with Markel in Henrico County.
Saturday, May 15, 1982, Valdosta, Ga. marked one of the top moments in Longwood baseball. Faced with a depleted pitching staff in the championship game of the South Atlantic Regional, Coach Buddy Bolding turned to a seldom used pitcher in relief - John DiPierdomenico. JD pitched five innings of shut out ball to earn a 3-1 win over Valdosta State and a berth in NCAA DII CWS. Catcher Doug Toombs joins JD to re-live one of Longwood’s greatest and improbable team accomplishments.
As a 6-6 post player, Ron Orr was one of the first Lancers to ever score 1,000 career points and haul in 500 rebounds. During the Orr years (1980-1983), the Lancers were 77-30, including a trip to the 1980 NCAA Division III Final Four. With a B.S. in Social Work, he served as a principal and administrator in special education and alternative schools in Union and Essex County New Jersey.
Ryan Marable stood five feet nine and 165 pounds and made the Longwood basketball team as a non-recruited walk-on. By playing stingy defense and limiting turnovers, he earned substantial minutes at point guard and competed with the best in NCAA Division II. He passes on his love as a middle and high school coach and founded Local Legends Sports in Chesterfield County.
The 2012-2013 season was Longwood’s first year in the Big South Conference and the women’s basketball team made it count. Despite an 8-10 conference record and a #7 seed, they won three games in four days before falling to the #1 seed Liberty Flames in the tournament finals. While the Lancers were loaded with seniors, they also relied on talented freshmen in their historic run. Kyndal Skersick was one of those freshmen. The Orlando resident talks about that team and her life after Longwood.
Coach Shirley Duncan (1983-2005) coached nine All-Americans, earned four trips to the NCAA Division II tournament, and is the winningest basketball coach in Longwood University history. Before college coaching, the Lexington Kentucky native and UK graduate taught and coached in Northern Virginia. She headed back to the Bluegrass State to lead Eastern Kentucky for four years where she won a state title and faced off against a young Tennessee coach in the late Pat Summitt.
Former president Patricia P. Cormier (1996-2010) envisioned's Longwood's potential in student enrollment, campus expansion and overall exposure. Junior Burr was a member of perhaps Longwood’s most cohesive and talented men’s basketball team ever, certainly on the Division II level. The 1993-94 Lancers racked up 20 straight wins and won a game in the college’s first appearance in the NCAA Division II tournament. While his playing time was limited, he applied lessons learned on a bigger stage. As the founder and owner of Canterbury Enterprises, Inc., Burr’s company is a key contributor in commercial construction and real estate development in Virginia. Canterbury teamed with Skanska USA to build the Joan Perry Brock Center at Longwood University.

As an up-and-coming officer in the Army, Joe Bass shared his story to anyone considering college. He graduated from high school with a 1.93 GPA with dreams of playing college football. He learned quickly that barely passing was not enough. With the help of coaches and ROTC mentors, Joe found his way to Longwood and then to the U.S. Army where he worked his way up to Brigadier General, Longwood’s first in active duty.
Joe Bass enjoyed the wrestling spotlight in Lancer Hall (now Willett Hall). With a career record of 48-25, he qualified for the NCAA DII regionals and was a key part in a young program. After retiring from the Army, Joe went back to his family roots and owned and operated restaurants. Now, as a full retiree in Burke Virginia, Joe reconnects with other Longwood wrestlers and plays golf.
Longwood assistant women’s basketball coach Loretta Coughlin talks about Cassie Ensley from recruitment to graduation in this speical 20-minute podcast. Coughlin assisted Head Coach Shirley Duncan from 1985-1998, served as Softball Head Coach from 1986-1995, and taught 20 years at Longwood in the Department of Kinesiology. After sitting out for most of two seasons, Cassie Ensley took full advantage of her fifth year. Now known as Cassandra Ensley Storer, the 5-6 guard made history in 1995 as the first Longwood women’s basketball team to play in the NCAA Division II tournament. After dropping 464 points in her final season, she ranks #8 in career scoring, #2 in made 3PTs, and #5 in assists. Cassandra was named Honorable Mention All-American and First Team Academic All-American. She teaches foreign languages in the Fairfax County Public Schools. Listen to a bonus episode! After starting at 4-10-1, Joe Parker captained three straight winning seasons for Longwood College soccer, a first in program history. In 1992, Tucker earned NCAA DII Player of the Year and was the DH on the Olympic Baseball team. He capped off the year as a first-round selection by Kansas City in the MLB Draft (10th overall).
Former Longwood Associate Head Coach Tiffany Sardin and Lancer teammate Dayna Rouse celebrate Akila Smith’s college hoops success and look forward to her pro career. Sardin is now in a similar role at St. Louis University. Rouse and Smith reunite on the island of Madeira where they will play for Francisco Franco, a team in the top women's league in Portugal.

Hunter Gilliam received his B.S. from Longwood University in May and promptly committed to the University of Kentucky to play baseball as a graduate student. The Lancer walk-on from the Fuqua School in Farmville earned LU freshman student-athlete of the year and capped his career as first team All-Big South Conference. Hunter is spending his second summer in Colonial Heights at first base with the Tri-City Chili Peppers of the Coastal Plain League.
With a determined attitude and superior athletic ability, John Stukes racked up a career record of 70 wins, eight losses and two ties in three years. At the 134-pound weight class, John was Longwood’s first NCAA Division II Regional Champion and the second Lancer wrestler to compete in the nationals. John is now a veteran high school wrestling coach and math teacher at Hayfield High in Fairfax County.
Despite two season ending injuries, Geter finished his six-year Longwood stint on a high note. He anchored a turnaround in Longwood basketball and earned his M.S. in Counselor Education after completing his B.S. in Sociology. Damarion now applies his education and first-hand experience as a mental health clinician at Washington and Jefferson College in Pennsylvania.
LaRon Wilson’s teammates and coaches at Lee-Davis High knew Wilson had speed and raw athletic ability, but no one thought he would be drafted after a stellar college career (MLB 2002, NYM, Rd. 15). The late bloomer caught the eye of Longwood Hall of Fame coach Buddy Bolding, who developed him into a .408 career hitter and a stolen base leader. LaRon earned his B.S. in Business Management in 2012, 10 years after leaving Longwood.
At five years old, Phil's goal was to hear his name called at the MLB draft. Since then, he has been on a mission to learn, improve and prove he belonged. As a starting third baseman at Longwood, he batted .386 and set school records for career hits (256) and sacrifice flies (22) among other hitting accolades. After two years in the St. Louis Cardinals chain, Cerreto earned his Doctor of Pharmacy and now practices while managing store operations with Walgreens in the Richmond area.
Emily Murphy was a key part in Longwood’s first three Big South Conference championships. The four-time all-conference shortstop left her marks in the career record book ranking within the top four in home runs, RBIs, and hits, just to name a few. She topped off her career hitting .365 as a senior. Murphy now passes on her lessons learned from mentors Kathy Riley and Kayla Miller as a coach and teacher at the Fuqua School in Farmville, Virginia.
Dana Smith knows resilience. After two season ending injuries at Longwood, the basketball standout from Woodbridge racked up 1,540 points and 708 rebounds. For his grit and resilience, Smith was a two-time finalist for the V Foundation Comeback Award. He took full advantage of his 6-year stay in Farmville and earned two bachelor’s degrees.
Brian Sprinkle was a fixture in goal as the Lancers posted a 50-15-11 record from 1981 to 1984. The three-time all-conference keeper received his BS in Business Administration and Marketing. After 20 years in corporate advertising and 10 years in college coaching, Sprinkle continues to pay tribute to his late teammate and Longwood All-American Mark McCardle.
Danny Sterling came to Longwood in 2006 as the Head Athletic Trainer and left in 2009 as the Associate Athletic Director for Internal Operations. He applied lessons learned from Longwood’s transition to Division I as the Athletic Director at UVA-Wise and Presbyterian College. After a two-year stint as VCU’s Executive Associate Athletic Director, Sterling is the Vice President of Sales for A Better Way Athletics.
Randy Johnson, Longwood '82, made his mark in the beginning of co-education and men’s basketball. He was the leading rebounder on the NCAA Division III Final Four Team in 1980 and then mentored a young Jerome Kersey in Longwood’s first two years in Division II. At George Wythe High in Richmond, Johnson teamed with another future NBA veteran - Paul Pressey. After a 32-year career with Philip Morris, Johnson is now an accomplished salt and freshwater fisherman.
Kathryn Idleson Noftzger wasted no time making her mark as a Longwood gymnast. The freshman from Severn, MD finished 7th in nationals and was Longwood’s first A-A in any sport. On May 5, 2017, she faced her biggest opposition when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. With help from friends and husband, Mike, she is now cancer free and a passionate advocate for early detection and awareness. Mitch Walker is featured in the third and final tribute to Longwood basketball legend Jerome Kersey. Walker, who bonded with Jerome as a freshman on and off the basketball court, reflects on the traits and characteristics that made Kersey special. Walker is a Financial Advisor for the Equitable Advisors Group and the First Deputy Director of Administration for Children’s Services with the City of New York.

Orlando Turner or “O” is featured in this episode as part of a tribute to Longwood basketball legend Jerome Kersey. O, who knew Jerome from basketball at Longwood to his untimely death in 2015, looks back at their friendship and brotherhood. Turner lives in Fredericksburg where he is a Team Leader and Loan Specialist with the US Small Business Administration.
With a BA in Physics from the University of Virginia in hand and a year of eligibility, Colin Ducharme had an itch to play more college basketball. As a Longwood College graduate student, the 6-9, 243 Ducharme dominated the paint and helped engineer one of Division II’s biggest turnarounds with a 28-3 and a berth in the NCAA playoffs. Ducharme is now the Executive Director of Sterling Capital Management in Virginia Beach.
Sean Flood spent just two years at Longwood, but his love for basketball and Ireland is a lifetime. As a team captain, he has represented Ireland for 10 years in international competition. Flood and the Irish senior national team won the 2021 FIBA European Championship for small countries in August to qualify for the EuroBasket 2025 tournament. Flood, a two-time All-Big South Academic selection, starts his second year of professional basketball with Omonia, a first division club in Nocosia, Cyprus.
Kelsey Pardue was arguably the best women’s soccer player since Longwood started the program in 1993. The two-time All-Big South Conference and All-Southeast region selection took her game to the major league stage as a member of the Washington Spirit. While injuries derailed her pro career, the Business Administration and Marketing major now focuses on the next generation as a coach for Loudoun Soccer. Now known as Kelsey Surkamp, she describes total immersion led to growth and success.
Michael Edge was known by his coaches and teammates as a quiet leader that led by example. A native of Chester England, he adjusted well to college soccer earning first-team DII All-American in 1988 and finishing his Longwood career with 22 goals and nine assists as a midfielder and a defensive back. After earning a B.S. in chemistry in 1990, Edge has worked for an international fragrance and flavor corporation for 30 years. He is now the vice president of sales and global accounts.
It’s not official, but chances are that Aaron Mitchell holds the Longwood men’s basketball record for the longest professional basketball career in the Division I era. Nine and counting. The 32-year-old guard from Matoaca Virginia just completed a year in Iraq and is looking forward to returning to the Middle East, perhaps in Kuwait for number 10. For four years, Kaylynn “Bug” Batten was a fixture behind the plate for Longwood softball. The three-time all-conference catcher managed Longwood’s best in the circle. In the batter’s box, she hit a career high .371 during her junior year and earned and three trips to the NCAA Regionals. She is now an Environmental Health Specialist in Wilson County North Carolina and an assistant softball coach for her alma mater, North Johnston High.
Three-time NCGA All-American and Academic All-American, Small College All-American, Longwood Athletic Hall of Fame, 19-year LPGA veteran. For Tina Barrett, the list of accolades and accomplishments goes on and on. Now, she leverages her experience to develop the next generation of golfers as the head men’s and women’s golf coach at Ottawa University in Surprise Arizona.
Lemish came to Longwood in 1982 to build the fundraising arm of the college. After Longwood, Lemish headed the advancement office and athletic department at James Madison University. He returned to Farmville in 1999 as the athletic director and helped the Lancers study the eventual move to Division I.
As a sophomore, Scooter and the Longwood men’s golf team made Longwood history as the first team in any sport to qualify for the NCAA Division I post-season play. Scooter is now the Head Golf Professional at Champion Hills in Hendersonville North Carolina where he manages golf operations and teaches members.
Dennis Hale, Longwood '91, was one of the all-time pitching greats with a career record of 33-6 and an appearance in the 1991 NCAA DII College World Series. A true student-athlete, the physics major earned All-American and Academic All-American honors. Since 2004, he leads his team of hometown heroes as the chief of fire and EMS in Dinwiddie County.
Jenny Holm quickly learned the challenges as a college student-athlete as she was thrust into the #1 singles slot as a freshman. She grew with her young team and made Longwood tennis history as the first team to post three consecutive winning seasons. Now, a physical therapist in Norfolk, Dr. Holm specializes in treating musculoskeletal disorders and injuries.
Cal Luther guided the Longwood men's basketball team for nine season (1981-90), including three years with late NBA veteran Jerome Kersey. Ana Litton is the all-time leading scorer in Longwood Women's Basketball history at 1,615 points and a two-time Honorable Mention All-American. A self-proclaimed "gym rat," Ana took her passion to the sidelines as a college coach for 10 years. Now, Ana applies her humor and fun loving personality as an elementary school physical education teacher in Seattle Washington.
Cody Anderson was hired as the Longwood University (VA) men's basketball director of basketball operations right after graduating from the University of Georgia in May 2015. After only a year, he was promoted to assistant coach, one of the youngest in Division I basketball. Cody is back in Georgia as the head coach of the Habersham Central High School Raiders, his alma mater. Melanie Lee had second thoughts after enrolling at Longwood in the the summer of 1983. She soon found a calling to social work and discovered her lifelong mentor Dr. Edna Allen Bledsoe Dean. On the basketball court, Melanie's game blossomed as she earned Honorable Mention All-American as a junior. After several of her "courageous conversations," Lee passed up basketball her senior year to complete an academic internship to finish her degree.
Mo Sumter came to Longwood University as a 17-year-old freshman in the fall of 2003 and was on the first team to play a full Division I schedule. Despite winning only 25 games in four years as a Lancer, Sumter finished fourth in career scoring and rebounds. Mo, who is an assistant at Christopher Newport University, shares lessons learned from his 10-year basketball coaching journey.
From 1980-1996, Steve Nelson's wrestlers made 15 appearances in the NCAA Division II Nationals and his 1996 golf team made history as they competed in the NCAA Division II National Tournament. After retiring from the Virginia Department of Social Services, Nelson is back in the saddle with the Lonesome Dove Equestrian Center, an organization that provides therapeutic horseback riding for veterans with special needs.
Sharon Pillow Parker, Longwood '83, competed just two years on the Longwood gymnastics team, but she made them count. She qualified for the AIAW Division II Nationals both years, finishing 13th in all-around as a freshman. Sharon, who has been coaching gymnastics since graduating from Longwood, is married to former Longwood College soccer standout, Joe Parker '83.
