Welcome to the Challenge Yo Self Season 2 finale. Sorry not sorry… we are taking a long break. We have decided to go on hiatus to focus on various individual projects. Perhaps you are in a season of transition too.
Don't fret, We have left you with a plethora of free podcasts, wisdom and information and we hope you take full advantage of these resources.
We want to end this season by challenging the idea that we were meant to do it all. No one can or should try to do it all. So with that, define what your "All" looks like and do it!
Thank you for all of your support and love, we look forward to hearing from you soon directly!
Challenge Yo Self!
Joy and Ashley

NEW EPISODE! Do you remember those classic reality shows: Real Housewives of...., Love and Hip Hop, or maybe even Love Island for those of you who are new to reality relationship shows. Looking back, do you ever remember seeing healthy relationships? Or even calm conversations at that? Well there was no lack of yelling and fighting but to us this is not what relationships should be. Come along on this journey as Ashley and Joy discuss the realities of the ugly cussing love and the alternatives that will help you keep your peace. Jump in as we talk more in this season of Relationships, Passions and Obsessions.
Challenge: Where do you need to make peace in your life? Do you need to let some relationships go? Or have hard conversations?
Leave us a voice message or email to let us know what you noticed about yourself.
The theme this season..... is RPO pronounced "REE-PO" (Relationships, Passions, Obsessions).
This season the Challenge Yourself will encourage, empower, and motivate you through the often mysterious, mesmerizing, and sometimes misleading world of relationships - relationships with yourself, relationships with others and intimate relationships. Whether talking about our own personal relationships and lessons or gaining perspective from the line up of highly-esteemed special guests, you will have the opportunity to become empowered with INTENTION in a world of "Whatever" and "YOLO".

Hi, I’m Dr. Joy. In the midst of one of the most painful and powerful times in my life, I gained some inspiration from my Dad, who passed away one week ago on my birthday.
My father applied greatness to everything he did, and I understand now what he meant, even when I decided to take a different road.
Hopefully you’ll enjoy these 14 nuggets of things I’ve learned along the way, and may you have a healing measure of peace as you listen.

Have you ever been friend zoned?
Well we don’t do the friend zone around here!
What does it mean to put someone in the friendzone anyway?
Do they know they have been placed there?
Are they okay with that new position in your life? Is a “friend zoned” person really a friend?
What is the need to place someone there, do you need a friend?
These are only a few of the questions addressed in this sizzling episode of the Challenge Yo Self podcast as we push deeper into this season of relationships, passions and obsessions.
Quite frankly, Joy and Ashley do not have time for friendzone relationships. Listen in to hear more about the friend zone and why you should think deeply before using this terminology. Maybe YOU need to look deep inside and ask yourself “why” you need or want to friend zone a person… The answer may surprise you if you’re honest. You will not want to miss this conversation!!! What does the word vulnerability mean to you? Everyone can struggle with allowing themself to open up and be vulnerable. More often we hear about Men struggling in this area; however, we tend to not recognize the inner "strong woman struggle" that many Ladies face! Particularly as Women of color, there is the notion that you should always be strong. But, what if we told you that being vulnerable is strong? It takes strength to soften the heart and share the inner you in a safe place. In this episode of the Challenge Yo Self podcast, Joy and Ashley share their softer side and discuss what true vulnerability looks like. The hosts goes on to mention tennis extraordinaire Naomi Osaka who, in an unprecedented move, decided to take her self-care and mental health in her own hands when she walked out of the French Open after declining to take interviews before the match. We all need this level of confident vulnerability and self care. Get your softest blanket, a cup of tea and listen to the softer side of the Challenge Yo Self podcast. Welcome to The Daily Challenge, a bite-size, motivational snack for your week, exclusively on the Challenge Yo Self podcast. Today’s Message is “Faith or Logic” hosted by Dr. Joy.
Listen to find out how faith and logic repel each other, attract each other and also the difference between the two. They don’t have to be enemies. They work together. Faith is not necessarily connected directly to Christianity only. Faith is universal. It’s believing in what is not yet seen. Logic is important too. Logic is thinking through and assessing the steps to making things happen or to explain life events without tons of emotional affect. Logic says 2+2 = 4. Logic considers all of the variables and makes the best decision based on the facts and prior knowledge. Let’s talk about it.

We've got a Youtube channel!!!!! Check us out at our full name - Challenge Yo Self | An Empowered Podcast.
In the time of "youngin" brides and 50-year age gaps, it was time for the Challenge Yo Self hosts to bring you a down and dirty episode full of wisdom nuggets and a lot of good pettiness.
In today's episode, Joy and Ashley ask the question, why are so many people (particularly men) marrying and getting into relationships with partners who are significantly younger than them? Is it loneliness, or perhaps the want for companionship before they turn into dust? Whatever the case, you will not want to miss this petty spaghetti episode in our Relationships, Passions, Obsessions season of the Challenge Yo Self podcast.
Challenge: We challenge you to write down each point and journal your thoughts. How do these points apply to your life currently?

SURPRISE! We have entered YouTube land. Come hangout with us and subscribe to our channel by searching by the full name of our podcast. Welcome to a special edition of the Daily Challenge, a bite-size, motivational snack for your week, exclusively on the Challenge Yo Self podcast. Today’s Message is “Friendship, Love, Grief, and Acceptance” hosted by Dr. Joy.
Sometimes we love hard. We envision well and then we lose. While love is never a loss, some relationships are going to end even when we don’t want them to, even when we avoid the hard topics, even when the writing is clear - it’s over. As Memorial Day weekend moved along, Dr. Joy chose to lose someone who did not recognize her worth and value. A friend who chose to stay on the fringes of her life was too much to bear another minute. She had to walk away. As Dr. Joy made the decision, she came across an email from one of her favorite writers - Brianna Wiest. That email was no coincidence and she chose to make it the centerpiece of today’s episode.

Have you ever had such a rough week that your only emotion is "Attitude"?
No worries, we have all experienced those times where it seems like one thing happens after another; and there is nothing you can do about it.
The challenge then is, how to move forward when you are stuck in a funk... On this episode of the Challenge Yo Self podcast, Joy hands the mic to Ashley as she discusses her less than favorable week that led to pure frustration and quite frankly... ATTITUDE.
On the other hand, there is a beautiful story in the midst of the trouble.... sistership and the power of having a team of strong women to hold you up when you are too weak to do so yourself.
This is a powerhouse episode that you will not want to miss.
Make sure to have a pen and paper ready to take notes!!! You may even want to pause and rewind!!

Astrology is such a hot subject these days. Have you ever met an amazing Guy "or Other", you are attracted to them and you have great chemistry, so naturally your next move is to ask.... "what's your sign"?
Have you ever done this?
If so, "why"?
We spend too much time focused on unimportant topics such as a person's astrological sign and not enough time on the person's character and personality.
Don't miss this power packed episode of the Challenge Yo Self podcast as Dr. Joy and Ashley give you alternatives to the "what is your sign" question.
And With that, Challenge Yo Self!!
Challenge: Re-listen to this episode and write down 3 Farmer questions and 7 well questions for your next date, meetup, connection, etc.... make sure to listen to the entire podcast episode to get the meaning of these phrases****

Question: Exactly how many Facebook groups are you a member of currently? How many groups do you actively engage with?
We took a leap into the unknown and ended up on the zany ride of the season.
You will be thoroughly entertained and enlightened during this episode, "Facebook Groups for Dummies" in our season on Relationships, Passions and Obsessions. Facebook groups have become very popular especially as we have faced lockdowns and less social interaction. On this episode, Joy and Ashley discuss their interaction on a relationships-based Facebook group with more than 60,000 members. With that many people in one place, things are bound to get juicy (or just plain weird).
You must listen to the entire episode to hear the top 4 posts the Challenge Yo Self team chose from members of this Facebook group. Not to mention the Existential Question asked by none other than Dr. Joy herself. Join us as we talk (laugh) our way through our take on these Facebook posts inside this rather large, really hilarious Facebook group.
By the way: May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and we have a couple of great and accessible resources just for you. Make sure you share with friends, family or anyone in need.

Have you ever seen Moissanite up close? These are beautifully lab-manufactured gemstones created to glisten and shine brilliantly like a real diamond. These stones are less-expensive than diamonds; and, for the most part, they succeed in nearly deceiving the eye into thinking it is a natural made stone.
Welcome to the Challenge Yo Self podcast episode on jewelry - well not really. This episode is not about jewelry, but rather the idea that, like Moissanite, some of our relationships are not the real deal. They are replicas masquerading as the real thing, hoping you will never uncover the truth and live the rest of life traumatically deceived, confused and broken.
Sometimes these fake stones make their way into our lives because they check off ALMOST all of the items on our desires list.
Maybe your former partner said all of the right things in the beginning and swept you away with their charm and lovebombing.
Maybe all of the pieces looked to be lining up just right! However, there is ALWAYS a caveat... There is always something that just won't gel. You begin to notice behaviors, actions or mannerisms that are just a little off but you shrug them away because, well.. they check all of the other boxes on the list.
During this episode of the Challenge Yo Self podcast, Dr. Joy and Ashley talk about how people end up with fake diamonds on their hand (and in their lives) and how to recognize the signs of real versus phony. Tune in to this episode of the podcast as Challenge Yo Self continues Relationships, Passions and Obsessions - Season 2.

Beastmode may do more harm than good in your relationships.
You may have a great relationship with your workout and meal prep, but you may have some more work to do regarding interpersonal communication and connection.
Wellness is not just physical. Wellness extends past physical.
It is financial. It is emotional. It is spiritual. It is intrapersonal. It is psychological. It is self care. It is interpersonal... and more.
On this episode of Ask Dr. Joy Well exclusively on the Challenge Yo Self podcast, Dr. Joy discusses how to win interpersonally.
Introducing the scale of wellness from 1 to 10 with 1 being "I'm not pursuing wellness" and 10 being "Wellness in various phases is a priority actively." What's your number and why?
Interpersonal wellness is producing solid, respectful communication with people, near and far. How do you relate to others and how do others relate to you?
Challenge: Ask 3 people you trust to give you a honest answer on how they perceive you and your behaviors.
This podcast introduces 5 steps to increased interpersonal communication:
1. Gain more self-awareness - Are you aware of how you feel, think and believe... and how you relate to others?
2. Curiosity is a game changer. Take the time to open up and get out of your own head.
3. Conversation is an art. Know your audience. Assess verbals and nonverbals. Adjust accordingly.
4. Create well-formed questions. Know the difference between open-ended and closed-ended questions.
5. Deal with your darkness or it will deal with you. Make peace with your past. Confront your triggers.
Now, let's look at your interpersonal wellness scale of 1 to 10. With 1 being "hot mess lane with room to grow" all the way up to 10 (able to navigate interpersonal communication solidly). What's your number? Why?
Send us a message and let us know your score!

Do remember that burning question, “Will you choose the Red pill or the Blue pill”?
Those famous words spoken by none other than Morpheous on the Matrix.
Maybe you do, maybe you don’t.
Either way you may have heard of a more recent example: “The Movement for Men’s Rights”. This underground society or philosophy, with deep, secret roots on the internet, is not what you may think. The "red pill" is a term used by a group of men (and some women supporters) who assert that mainstream views and treatment of women as pedestalized and victims of a unequal society is fake news.
While some of their opinions may have some validity, the heart of their message contains a root of bitterness and hatred towards women and may we even go so far as to say, themselves.
Our purpose for creating this episode is to challenge the way the movement has presented its theories, ideals, rules, and guidelines - that all women have gotten a free ride in a fancy car, and that men should take back their power emotionally, sexually, and relationally.
Tune in to this episode of the Challenge Yo Self podcast to hear the recommendations single women should heed in this season of Relationships, Passions and Obsessions.

Don't save him, cause he don't wanna be saved.
Early Friday morning, an article from Rebecca Stevens A. on Medium, a site for amazing writers, hit my phone.
It is entitled, "Is it True What They Say about Sex With Black Girls?" Read it here: https://medium.com/illumination-curated/is-it-true-what-they-say-about-sex-with-black-girls-223333aeb10d
I immediately thought, "What do 'they' say?", as I read the article. I know what I've experienced; however, I wanted to hear what someone else who lived mostly outside of the United States experienced. Would we be similar? Would we be different?
We had a similar experience as black girls growing up.
The article resonated with me and it resonated with Ashley, my co-host. We are, indeed, two spectacular, single black women navigating a cruel world courageously.
I immediately alerted Ashley and this podcast episode was born.
Wait, let me back up... it's not really an episode as much as it is an experience to be had and savored, if you can stand the heat.
We provide a 30 minute warmup prior to diving into the deep, and I'm warning you that we go deep.
There are many words that people who are NOT black women use to describe us. I say it's time to take back the narrative and the power from those who do not walk in our shoes.
As we continue Season 2: Relationships, Passions, Obsessions - this episode promises to be one of the most provocative yet.
We challenge YOU to tune in, take notes and give us feedback.

Firsthand podcast convo experience from Challenge Yo Self co-host Ashley Marcel: This episode of the Challenge Yo Self podcast is one that I never saw coming and will never forget for all of the right reasons. On this episode, Joy and myself ask a very special guest to speak on the topic of Relationships, Passions and Obsessions in reference to his gut punching twitter posts.
Because, we all know the truth comes out on Twitter.
We started this interview asking about this guest's twitter feed, and the conversation turned into one of the most encouraging messages I have ever received.
I am a 30+, well educated, African American woman currently going to Graduate school for a Masters degree. I love my family and friends and have a desire to work with women and communities in an effort to provide them with a better quality of life. Did I mention attractive? All in all, I think I am a great catch. However, my experiences over the past few years would paint a completely different story.
After enduring many dating fails, hurtful assumptions and bad intentions from men, I became very discouraged about the health of singles today. Quite frankly, I was done trying to impress Men and trying to become the ideal version of the wife they said they wanted.
I needed hope and that hope came in the form of a special guest and friend of Challenge Yo Self.
Introducing our friend Mr. Chuck Hawkins… Chuck is a “Girl Dad” of 4 beautiful daughters and a devoted, loyal husband. If these things do not tell you enough about “Mr. HawkVision”, Chuck has also apprenticed with world-renowned Les Brown, he has spoken and trained entrepreneurs all over the world. Now, Chuck is sharing his wisdom and talents with the world by leading workshops, holding speaking engagements and hosting the legendary podcast “HawkVision '' where Chuck interviews entrepreneurs from all over the globe. (@chuckishustle, @hawk_vision_)
Based on these things, I was more than excited to hear what Chuck had to say.
For the first time in a long time I felt valued, I felt heard and I felt seen. I knew we have many different nationalities, races, ethnicities and genders who listen to our podcast so I do not ever want to overlook that. We are so grateful for you.
I truly hope you are as blessed by this episode as Joy and I have been. Challenge Yo Self.

If dating has become an exhausting job or chore more than an exciting adventure, and you’ve been at it for so long… what are the alternatives?
A letter arrived into my virtual mailbox from “Leg the Stallion” asking me why I am retiring from dating.
Great question to answer.
But first: Singles, if you’re exhausted with the chasm of dating, what keeps you engaged in it day after day and night after night? Sex. Nah. Food. Nah. Drama. Perhaps. Standards. Maybe. Pressures. Surely.
Does the endless scroll of dating apps, hooking up, and trying to read minds excite you or exhaust you?
Does it fill you or fool you?
Do you use romantic or physical connection to fill the empty spaces in your soul?
Food for thought.
Therefore to “Leg the Stallion” and all of the listeners out there, I will take the hill and answer this question honestly and authentically right now on Warrior Wednesday.
I hadn’t quit at anything I put my mind to… but saying no to people, places and things that recurrently stress me finally didn’t feel like quitting. Instead it felt like winning.
Excerpt: “When I graduated and I realized – wow! A lot of my friends are married. Or engaged, or already have like whole families. I was like waking up like Rip Van Winkle. Waking up and looking around. And being like, wait? So Huh? You mean to tell me? That I missed so much. In my pursuit of all things educational…”

Challenge Yo Self to Chime in with Us!
Episode 210 Notes
What did you learn from the Oprah interview on Sunday with Meghan and Harry?
“If you find someone you love in your life, then hang on to that love.… and if you were lucky enough to find someone who loved you, then you must protect it.” – Diana, Princess of Wales
Who would have imagined these words coming to life in the marriage of her youngest son and his bride, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
Today, the word "love" can sound like it's just a word. Rarely do we see the type of dedication and consistency that Princess Diana showed before her tragic passing in 1997. But we have been privy to a new love, an unwavering love - and no we don't mean Bridgerton.
For these reasons, Challenge Yo Self could not bypass the opportunity to talk about the recent, highly anticipated interview between Harry, Meghan and the great Oprah. In this episode, Joy and Ashley share the golden nuggets they learned about love from Harry and Meghan's relationship and interview.
Joy speaks of the love that "decides together" and refuses to stay stuck when faced with walls. Ashley discusses how love allows a person to see life through another's eyes, and the choice to stick together when it is easier to leave.
You do not want to miss out on this timely, powerful and real conversation about love. Specifically, the way Harry and Meghan have shown their love for each other among some serious haters.
May you be inspired and challenged to love resolutely.

When was the last time you stopped to ask yourself:
What do I need in this relationship? What do I want? And no, we are not talking about what you want for dinner. This is deeper.
Nowadays, many relationships have a weak connection and like your cell phone service, weak connections can lead to disconnection. Not to mention the issues that arise when YOU do not have an understanding of what you do and do not want.
In this episode of the Challenge Yo Self podcast, Joy and Ashley talk about personal and relationship needs and the importance of voicing your wants regarding faith, family and much more to your partner.
Join Joy and Ashley as they share why understanding your needs and wants is important and share practical tips on how to uncover and share them.

If you've been on the planet for more than 60 seconds and watched Netflix at some point, you have probably heard the hot-blooded phrase "I burn for you".
Are we right?
Intimacy... defined as "A close familiarity or friendship; closeness." In this episode of Challenge Yo Self , Joy and Ashley discuss the meaning of intimacy and distance that is created when relationships lack it.
In all fairness, many of us were not shown true intimacy nor have we truly experienced it. We may have seen long lasting relationships but never true passion; we may have had friendships but never really created strong bonds. These are the characteristics of a culture lacking closeness.
Joy and Ashley discuss what it looks like to put yourself first and begin developing an intimacy with yourself, followed by your personal relationships. Ashley shares a powerful article by "mindbodygreen.com", defining the four types of intimacy. You may be surprised!
Finally, Joy shares a lesser known coaching technique called the "Somatic Method", which aims to help people build intimacy within their lives and relationships. What a better time to talk about this important yet rarely talked about subject, than in the midst of season 2 of the Challenge Yo Self Podcast - "Relationships, Passions and Obsessions".
We challenge YOU to take the intimacy leap and gain a deeper understanding of yourself and your partner (or potential partners).

Quote: "I guess I don't feel as though I'm allowed to take a break."
We fight hard to become adult so that we can do what we want, only to realize that we are simply following the herd and doing what we DON'T want.
Hustle culture is totally American. Hashtags such as #teamnosleep and phrases such as "I will sleep when i'm dead" paint a surface-level of a deeper issue. Even some of the top motivational speakers in the world present the picture that if you want to succeed you must sacrifice comfort and needs to get there.
What makes us wear a "busy body" as an accomplishment? Today on the show, Ashley and Joy share their struggles with the equation - hard work + hustle + zero sleep = accomplishment and if you're not applying that equation, you're a failure or lazy.
Let's make it clear. Purposeful work is great. But the days of denying food, water, sleep, healthy hobbies, and self-care are coming to an end brought to you by the Challenge Yo Self podcast. We challenge you to do one thing/let go of one thing to improve the quality of your life this week starting now!
Leave us a voice message to let us know what you noticed about yourself.

True statement: #Selfish is not a dirty word. Sometimes humans make selfishness 'dirty' with their behavioral patterns.
In episode 3 of Season 2, Challenge Yo Self defines and distinguishes 'selfishly selfish' from 'purposefully selfish'.
When it comes to #relationships, one form of selfish is more effective than the other. Listen in and find out the details, from your resident RPO experts (Relationships. Passions. Obsessions.)
And, challenge yo self!

#NoLiesTold - We got booted from our own podcast.
Seriously.
Jako (as known as) Mr. Internationale, Rico Suave, and the "Louis Vuitton Chateaubriand" (he doesn't know that yet) - is a connoisseur of many things - parties, fashion, travel, great food... and the inner sanctum of the mind of a woman. He's also an extremely hard worker. He jumped on the podcast to school us in a man's way of thinking, from his vantage point of having travelled around the world and having adventures of a lifetime.
If you've ever visited his "super-private" Instagram, then it's a ticket into the balmy, bright Florida life. He's full of passion and love, and as we uncovered during the show - he holds wisdom beyond his years.
He's also always in motion...and when we talked too long, he left the show, but not without a sweet, delightful tasty treat at the end. He's full of fun, advice, and just when we think we have the answers he says "LISTEN"... and with his gorgeous #Haitian tongue, that grabs your attention.
Ladies, don't spend time wondering why Jako is on the show, tall drink of water that he is... Just simply listen and enjoy the scene, the flavor and the mood. Yep, he's potentially single (at the time of this recording, we think). But, with Jako, one never really knows too much. He's just that smooth.
Mwen sel ap panse Avek ou.
So fun!
Challenge Yo Self.

Episode 99 - Can you believe we've recorded 99 episodes of the Challenge Yo Self podcast since April? This has been the epic journey of a lifetime, and we have one more episode to go before we close out Season 1 and give you an opportunity to binge Season 1 for the new few months. In this episode we talk about the circle of life, when the parent becomes more fragile and less agile, and it's up to adult children to step into a role we never thought we would reach. That can be challenging, but it also brings families closer together. We also discuss the fact that parents of adult children don't know how to let go sometimes and we have to remind them "we got this". This is an episode you don't wanna miss as we talk about the blessing and burden of aging parents and challenge you to live your best life for you. When you are addicted to approval, you waste time fighting for words you may never hear such as "I'm proud of you" or "you're a great daughter or son". Don't live your life by others' words for you or to you. Family is important, but your developmental years train you to walk well as an adult. And, when you feel limited, gain coping skills. We would hope that our parents/guardians see our light, even when they refuse to see us as grown ups with our own opinion (haha).

Episode 91 - Let’s be honest. Many singles have probably put our engagement hopes on the shelf since the pandemic. Bills are due. And, suddenly the cutesy meal ordering people were doing slowed down as we tried to make sense of the state of the nation and world. So, as Ashley and Joy reminisced one night about interesting happenings from back in the day... Joy was reminded of the 300 sandwiches fiasco/wonderment/inspiration, a blog created by Stephanie Smith about 8 years ago. Ashley and Joy started googling to find articles about the 300 sandwiches couple. Yes do you remember them perhaps?
One night long ago, Stephanie made her boyfriend a sandwich, which he devoured and loved. He then said “you’re 300 sandwiches away from an engagement ring”. Suddenly a blog was born affectionately named 300sandwiches.com. We wanted to know what happened to this couple. Were they happy? Healthy? Still in love? Were sandwiches still part of their daily lives? Yes we needed to know and we also wanted to share our findings with you. So... catch all the deets in this podcast. And, Stephanie and Eric, whereever you are, keep it fresh! And even as we write this... we just found out more sauce.
The couple and their gorgeous baby live in the Dominican Republic. Yes we found you! @stefsmith on Instagram. We stan you right now, Stephanie and Eric, as couple goals!!! Look at what 300 sandwiches can do. What would you do for an engagement ring?

Episode 89 - Are you ready to secure the bag?
It is once again time for Challenge Yo Self Weekly Top Tens. We are counting down the top ten ways to get hired. Ashley opens the top ten list with 5 ways to get the job in the meantime or the job of your dreams. Beginning with the essentials, Ashley talks about dressing for the interview and double checking your interview time and date. While these things may seem simple, it is the small details that could make or break your interview. Next, Ashley delves into the importance of understanding your own likes and dislikes on a job or in general. Because who wants to be in a position for the rest of their life that they hate? Moving on, Ashley describes the ability to communicate your strengths, as well as the ability to turn your weaknesses into strengths.
Joy discusses the crafting an impeccable resume. You may remember writing your resume and sending it to 10 jobs but did you know not every resume is for every position? She also talks about researching the company and position in which you are applying. Rehearsing for the interview is essential whether phone or in person. Checking facial expressions is critical. Additionally, writing a "thank you" note to send to your potential employer is a way to make a great first impression particularly if they aren’t from the same generation as you and they usually aren’t. Last but not least, Joy talks about what is probably the most important thing that you need to know... "you are JUST AS IMPORTANT as the interviewer(s) sitting across from you" and you are also vetting them and the job environment.
Do you have any success tips to help people get hired on their dream job? We want to hear your thoughts, leave us a message at thatwednesdaylife.com or drop us a voicemail at anchor.fm/boldstandards.

Episode 88 - This conversation has been so refreshing. As we conclude “All of Me or None of Me”, we hit up some tough points of self sabotage, boundaries, and connections. And Ashley and Joy fall into hysterical laughter. Listen - AIRBRUSHING IS NOT REALITY. Some people desire an airbrushed, surface relationship. That’s not a relationship that truly works. The difference between love, lust, infatuation and fantasies is discussed. If you marry an infatuation, you just might be disappointed. Some people think “all of me or none of me” is simply an ultimatum of control. No. Actually it is a declaration of knowing your worth and being serious about it. The fact is: some people are only committed to themselves, and they even have trouble there. Some people are simply afraid of commitment and want to make sure others don’t get close to them - ever. They live their lives on their own terms and expect others to follow their rules. Ashley and Joy decided to set the record straight on relationships, situationships, happenstances, and bad romances (as Gaga sang). One night Ashley and Joy were talking and came up with a topic worth sharing with the podcast community. Finally, Ashley put her hoof down and said “it’s either all of me or none of me” and this conversation was born. Do you want a Gone with the Wind relationship? An airbrushed relationship?? Episode 87 - Welcome to Part two of our conversation on All of me or none of Me. And yes you will hear Joy use the word “punk”. In this episode Ashley and Joy explain the buffet mentality versus the five star mentality of dating and relationships. Part of the buffet is “I can do whatever I want” and “there will always be another person I can fall back on”. But when you step up to the five star, you recognize you have to up your game. That’s how these next three episodes were born. Yes we spill the tea on our five-star experiences and how we were changed. Bottom line: When you have a poverty mindset, you take every train smoking. When you have a poverty mindset you don’t know how to commit and feel out of place around people who challenge you to be better. This is how relationships get stuck. Do you want a Gone with the Wind relationship? A life-stealing relationship? A doggie bag relationship? Great! Listen in to this three-part conversation and take notes. One night Ashley and Joy were talking and came up with a topic worth sharing with the podcast community. Finally, Ashley put her hoof down and said “it’s either all of me or none of me” and this conversation was born. Yes we spill the tea, juice, of our stalking moments with Simone Biles and her former flame of love. And we discuss performing for social media (which is essentially pimping out your relationship for the gram). Bottom line: We want the world to know relationships and dating are not always for public consumption. When it becomes about others then it’s no longer about the two people in the relationship. Do you want a Gone with the Wind relationship? A tumbleweave relationship? A staged relationship? Great! Listen in to this three-part conversation and take notes. Episode 84 - Welcome to the famed Top Ten Things Mama (Grandma, Auntie, Psudo Auntie) Taught Us. This is Monday’s BIG episode, every Monday. On Mondays we debut a Top Ten list on every topic under the sun called “The First 10s”. This week is entitled “The Top Ten Things Mama Taught Us".
Many children today experience high levels of stress and the pressure to preform or be the best at many things all at the same time. We are in a time where social anxiety is high and parents have high expectations for their children from a young age. In this episode of the First Tens, Joy starts the conversation off with the difference between childhood in the 80s and childhood today.
Along with these truths, Ashley and Joy discuss the things learned from Mama and the village of women who taught them. From the importance of girdles, building your cultural portfolio and being well-rounded to desiring entrepreneurship, Mama taught many things a book never could, Joy exclaimed. Including the fundamental idea of never forgetting where you come from and who you are as a unique person who belongs to a community. Ashley discusses having the ability to take care of herself (a.k.a. latch-key children), and the importance of willpower to keep going and not give up along with learning to level up. Not to mention the fashion sense learned from her Grandmother at a young age.
With these diverse topics you will not want to miss this episode of the First Tens.
Challenge Yo Self Ashley and Joy unveil their top ten EVERY MONDAY and challenge you to stop by anchor.fm/boldstandards to share your memories of childhood. Join us every Monday for a new list.

Episode 83 - How do you lose a guy in one day? Tired of blaming yourself? Sick of overanalyzing the ghosting? Fed up with feeling unwanted and not desired? Great! This is the episode for you. Ashley and Joy set you up for success in dating whether you’re single and looking for the one or covertly self-sabotaging. We let it all hang out and tell you the honest truth right now. Here are some highlights: IF you want to keep a guy interested THEN have ZERO boundaries, talk about sex, have a dire need to be rescued from yourself and your issues, never bring up commitment, act completely dumb about sports, don’t be independent or have a good job, keep an air of mystery, don’t have normal bodily functions - like using the restroom - that you actually share, and don’t say you attend church in any capacity. Yes we said it. While this episode is fun and lighthearted, we’ve had enough life experiences and heard plenty of stories to share these necessary deets with you. This info is worth thousands of dollars and you didn’t have to pay a dime but you can like and share this episode and educate others. You may find healing and clarity from this one episode that is guaranteed to wake you up, Sleeping Beauty. So, we show you how to lose a guy in one day. Just one day. Heck, it may only take one conversation. Journey with us and Challenge Yo Self.

Episode 82 - Apparently we weren't done with our tea and we had to bring up the notorious Megan Thee Stallion - rapper, youngin, and trying to handle fame (incorrectly). Megan, Challenge Yo Self just wants the best for you and we hope you leave some of the crew behind that simply can not fly with you. In this episode, Ashley and Joy discuss the social anxiety plaguing the teens and 20-somethings currently. It's thick. The podcast can't motivate anyone to leave a voicemail. We are secretly rolling our eyes. But, the pinnacle of the episode is the Instagram poll we completed where we asked people to "describe something you do that others find strange or peculiar"... Find out what happens when people shared their "interesting" habits. Baby heads, food mixing, radio stations, floor cleanliness, and more are discussed as we searched far and wide for answers, even within ourselves. Episode 74 - Welcome to our weekly public and mental health update - Brain and Body Weekly in which Challenge Yo Self podcast covers news and research articles relating to Mental and Public Health.
Ashley and Joy begin the episode with a Mental Health update presented by Joy. Covering an article “Should You Reach Out To An Old Friend Right Now?” published in the New York Times by Anna Goldfarb, Joy addresses the topic of connections during the pandemic. Many people are missing the art of connection during social distancing, which may lead people to think deeply about their old connections. Joy normalizes the practice of reminiscing about past relationships when people are in a place of isolation and vulnerability. Along with the feeling of boldness that has arisen from the understanding of “mortality salience” (look it up) and the need for comfort. The biggest question is, should those old relationships be rekindled and what are your intentions behind reaching out? Joy delves deep into this topic asking probing questions and challenging you to think about your feelings and motives before taking action to reconnect.
In Public Health, Ashley discusses an article written by Elizabeth Yuko, from Rolling Stone. She discusses the legacy of Mary Gregory, the first Black Woman to graduate from St. Vincent. Mary led the way in providing excellent health care and genetic screening to the African Americans within her community. Mary's commitment led to important research by her daughter Leslie Gregory, who founded "Right To Health”, an organization which fights to declare racism as a public health crisis due to its physical/biological/health effects on the African American community. This article elicits a passionate conversation between the Challenge Yo Self Team that spans the health effects of racism on those affected and its connection with the disproportionate numbers of minorities contracting and dying from the Coronavirus.
This episode of the Brain and Body update will enlighten you to community issues that have not been addressed along with challenging yourself to examine your motives and current state of health and connectivity. Ashley and Joy spend the CLEAN UP talking about making space to conquer the hurts and confront the pain of tough relationships and hurtful endings. They discuss abuse versus difficult, fragmented communication. Some people don’t have a model of strong relationships and that can create a deficit that can be overcome if you work at it. We laugh. Joy evens connects noncommitment to the current state of wearing a mask.

Episode 61 - Ashley and Joy has a lot to discuss during their lunch break. IT’S JUNETEENTH!!! This is the date 155 years ago that the enslaved population of Texas learned they were free. This was two years following the Emancipation Proclamation signed by Lincoln which formally freed all of the enslaved population of the US. Apparently Texas didn’t get the memo until later. And today as we celebrate emancipation for all, there is realization that there is still a lot of work to do in our country. Episode 51 - Wow! Ashley and Joy had an opportunity to listen to the incredible, empowering commencement message that Beyoncé gave to the Class of 2020. They were inspired to create a podcast episode based on three words: Bet on Yourself.
How are you successfully betting on yourself? It’s time to challenge your mindset, fears, flaws and failures and reach for success.
Joy called 2020 the Diamond year and season because of the way that diamonds are formed. It’s time to focus on success and the road to personal and professional significance and that means going ALL IN. How do we go all in? Listen in and gather strength from this episode. Episode 48. Ashley & Joy went beyond the burger and fries culture to discuss how the 24-hour news cycle, social media scrolls, and endless video clips may be creating painful triggers. Therefore, ask yourself how you can structure your day well to consume information that will improve your quality of life and educate you on what you can do to move forward.
The impact of a social media diet is discussed along with chilling out from feeling forced to speak. Speak when you have something to say. What you feed yourself grows. Let that sink in and enjoy our extended show today as we continue to navigate rocky waters with a hole in the boat. But we are getting there.

Episode 47 - Ashley and Joy thought about skipping another day of podcast making. Then they realized they needed the encouragement too. As Ashley figures out what to say, Joy comes up with a rhyme straight out of the Wizard of Oz playbook. Honestly, we didn’t want to leave our beloved podcast community hanging during this chaotic, challenging time. We talk self care, protests, DJ Dnice, work climate, and being patient with yourself. In the midst of it all, we found a way to laugh. So tune in, invite friends and remember that it’s totally ok to feel what you’re feeling. World change doesn’t happen over night. Racism won’t end over night. But little by little we can all make a decision for real change (as we pray Joy cuts her toenails). By the way, are you registered to vote?

“It’s sad that we live in a time that if I didn’t take a video, it didn’t happen.”
It is time to do something. Right now, right here in the states, we have an epidemic of hate, violence, silence and racism that is widespread. What will you do?
Tonight Joy & Ashley can’t breathe and we talk candidly on Challenge Yo Self podcast about the blistered soul of America. We would be remiss to go one more day without addressing the killings of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, AND MORE. We would be wrong to sleep another night without addressing the health disparities of COVID-19. Either you’re a part of the problem or the solution. There is no middle ground.
Solutions: vote, fill out the census, look at the person in the mirror, challenge your places of worship, educate your friends and family, write your legislators, make a change today. Leave a message with us if this impacted you. It takes every voice lifted and every person engaged now. Will you join in the fight against injustice?

Episode 34 - “Sometimes God takes a long time to move SUDDENLY”.
In the finale, Anna discusses marriage and relationships. She shifts the perspective of relationship goals from focus on wanting to be like couples we see to focus on how God moves in our lives and changes us in the wait and beyond. And, don’t get it twisted, she literally, literally gets candid on her single walk, divorce in the church, and the joys and difficulties of walking in various seasons of relationship.
Anna Wiggins is a Leader, Speaker, Mentor and Pastor’s Wife. At the age of 16, Anna felt God call her to full-time ministry, when He prompted her to pray, “Here am I.
