Art of Surrender: Recent Episodes

B Hampson

Human beings are the only animals burdened with the intelligence to feel embarrassment. This is because we can perceive a void between our actual and our potential. This void could be seen as our ego. It is in truth irrelevant to who we are, as it is inhibitive to who we can become.

In this podcast, everyday people share their martial arts stories and how its helped them to surrender and get out of the way of their own growth.

On this episode of AOS I sat down with Jack Della fresh off his first round KO victory over Aldin Bates at Eternal MMA 53 on October 10th. We spoke about the fight card, the devastating KO victory and a little bit about what's next, including some distractions over Perth's best burgers. Sorry for the short chat, we got carried away having a roll in the gi before the podcast and I had to finish up in time for work.  Nonetheless, I hope you all enjoy. On this episode I sat down with Adam Selby from Broome BJJ. Adam flew up to Perth for a couple of weeks to compete in the AFBJJ WA State Gi titles, where he managed to walk away with the gold medal in his weight division. Adam is a brown belt and has been training jiu jitsu for around 10 years.

Originally from NZ, where he began training, Adam ended up moving to Broome for what was supposed to be a couple of months. Almost a decade later and he's still there and loving a stress-free lifestyle.

We had a chat about all things jiu jitsu, including his journey from white to brown belt and a recent incident where he had to use jiu jitsu to subdue a much bigger person on the street.

We also answered some listeners questions and just had a good time.

I hope you all enjoy.

On this episode of AOS I sat down with one of my training partners and friends from Kaizen Lab Jiu Jits, Maxwell Hearn. Fresh off the AFBJJ WA State Gi Titles, where Max walked away with some biscuits, we sat down to have a chat about the day.

We also answered some listeners questions which included some talks about wrassling, as well as neck tattoos and some tips for white belts and our thoughts on what it takes to get a purple belt.

Max is a legend, I'm sure we will do many more episodes together as time goes on and it's always a good laugh.

I hope you all enjoy too.

On this episode of AOS I sat down with Meng Chua from Kickass MMA in Morley, WA.  Meng shared his martial arts story, which started out with the hard arts and has led to the soft arts. He made some mistakes along the way which landed him in a bit of trouble. Since that time he's found his way in life through martial arts, jiu jitsu, specifically has really helped him to become a better version of himself, along with a loving wife, two daughters and a hard working FIFO career.  Meng's story epitomises The Art of Surrender, this is what this podcast is all about. It was a pleasure to meet and have a chat with Meng and I look forward to sitting down for another episode in the future.  Keep doing your thing mate. I hope you all enjoy, and yo, subscribe to the damn podcast! I appreciate you all <3. This episode of the podcast is a little different to what you've come to expect.  David Brennan and his father founded the International Boxing Concierge in 2011. The purpose of this business was to link boxing champions and fans together for an experience that money can't buy. We're talking private dining, cocktail parties, golf days and training experiences with names like Mike Tyson, Roy Jones Jnr, Evander Holyfield, George Foreman, Roberto Duran and Jeff Fenech. David shares enough stories to paint a little picture of what it might have been like to party in Vegas with these legends and how much damage these lads can do to a bar tab.  Prior to sharing these stories David and myself had a little chat about what life is like living in Melbourne during these times and how it has affected his business, Radium Capital. This is a good one, I hope you all enjoy.

In this episode of AOS I sat down with Leigh Burger, the head coach and owner of Grappling Technics in Osborne Park, Perth WA.

Prior to the chat I attended a lunch time class where Leigh showed some techniques and ideas from back control, including both retention of the hooks and attacks from the back. We covered a rear naked choke, a lapel choke and the bow and arrow. Leigh showed some nice details on blending them together for higher percentage results.

I had a heap of fun in the class and in the rolls with both Leigh and a couple of his students!

I listened back  to the episode before publishing and had a little bit of a laugh when he talked about getting peoples autographs. I didn't click at the time, but on reflection, cheers for the autograph Leigh, i'll keep this one on me. It was a pleasure!

I hope you all enjoy and don't forget to subscribe! :)

On this episode of the podcast I sat down and had a chat with my good friend, mentor and MY very first jiu jitsu coach, John Smallios. John is a Professor Pedro Sauer/Phillip Grapsas (episode 10) black belt and the head coach of Higher Jiu Jitsu in Sydney, Australia.

John shares his martial arts story and how jiu jitsu quickly became a passion that seemed to take priority over other aspects of his life (like many of us). We chat about how he came up through the ranks and was motivated heavily by competition in his early years of jiu jitsu and how a devastating shoulder injury forced him to change his entire outlook and approach to jiu jitsu.

We chat about the Jiu Jitsu Commune and how it slowly became what is known as Higher Jiu Jitsu today.

We also talk about the Feldenkrais method and how awareness of movement impacts every aspect of our being and how this has influenced his approach to jiu jitsu and every day life.

John and the crew at HJJ had such a positive impact on my 4 years of living in Sydney and I can say with confidence that I would not have enjoyed my time there anywhere near as much as I did if it wasn't for them. I am grateful to you all and look forward to sharing the mats again sometime soon.

I hope you enjoy.

Brad sits down with Cam Sobes from Leverage Jiu Jitsu in Melbourne. Cam is a Professor Pedro Sauer/Phillip Graphas (featured in episode 10) Black Belt.

Cam shares his martial arts journey throughout the episode, we discuss his view of the strategy of jiu jitsu - that first we should make the position comfortable and safe for us. Second, make it uncomfortable for our opponent, that is, to generate a reaction. Then use our opponent's reactions against them by applying our own mechanic and understanding of the position to advance, control or submit. Cam explains how this strategy lead him to structure all of his learning in a SYS-tems based approach (Safety, Yield & Utilise, Secure).

We discuss the Higher-Mount SYS-tem course that Cam just offered to students. Which myself and many other students participated in and gained so much from. This has lead to the creation of the Cross-Body SYS-tems course that Cam is opening up to everybody.

I hope you all enjoy!
