In a military journal (the book of Joshua), the second chapter tells the story of Rahab, a Prostitute in the pagan land of Jericho. In an ancient, male-driven, barbaric world, devoting a full chapter to a woman on the outskirts of society AND HER being the HERO of this part of the story … doesn’t make sense.
Like many moments in Bible, this detail would never occur to ancient imagination and be included … unless it happened!

How Jesus Ruins New Years (Luke 10:25-37)
The average New Years resolution fizzles out after 32 days. Lots of reasons for this, but a big reason is that the ones that fizzle are just wishes, they aren’t perspective shifts that turn into actual plans because plans and practices are risky, uncomfortable and costly. But true resolve begins by asking difficult QUESTIONS…
And often the questions alone leave us flustered, and fearful...wooing us back to wishfully thinking. And wishful thinking is usually abandoned by making excuses and looking for loopholes!
Jesus Ruins New Years by constantly asking questions (there are over 300 recorded questions Jesus asked in the Gospels), offering tradition altering, world-view shattering and often unthinkable truths and then He demands us to wrap ourselves up in its practice!
In this sermon, Dusty shows how, with just one question, Jesus shatters our pretense to find loopholes and make excuses for obeying the heart of God.

Rock scholars R.E.M. once said, "It's the end of the world as we know it...and I feel fine." Jesus said something similar thousands of years before in Matthew 24 (well...kind of, but that was a good transition, right?!).
Jesus makes a statement about how the Temple in Jerusalem will one day be destroyed. The disciples come to Him in private wanting more information but they couch their questions in "end of the world" language because for them, the destruction of the temple would be the end of things. Jesus' reply was important for His followers who'd be alive when the temple was indeed destroyed 40 years later...but also for believers of every generation as we wait in patient confidence of Jesus' second and final coming!
Cue up R.E.M.'s classic to play after you listen to this sermon! ;)

At 80 years old, Moses saw something strange and because he paid attention, it changed his life forever. And paying attention in this same way can change yours too.
There’s a story a lot of us tell ourselves: that transforming moments just kind of happen to us, like fate experiences that crash into us.
This way of thinking temps us to cross our fingers, wish and wait for those big meteorite moments of faith to just happen.
But what if every "simple" moment is a sacred invitation set on fire with God’s Presence?
This sermon is about all of that...

The finale in our series through the New Testament book/letter of 2nd Timothy.
2 Timothy 4:1-8
The Apostle Paul wrote this letter to Timothy from a PRISON. 2 Timothy is the Final LETTER of Paul we have before he was executed.
For 30 years, he started churches, wrote letters to them (making up ½ the New Testament books, making up 30% of the New Testament) and he experienced adventure, joy and suffering untold.
Now, in a dungeon prison, ½ blind, body broken, emotionally drained, knowing the curtain is closing on his life, Paul writes to Timothy, his son in faith.
And chapter 4 gives us the final words of Paul recorded. He boils it all down to 1 Charge that has 2 Priorities and closes with 3 Points of View for life and finishing well.
This sermon is about all of that...

2 TIMOTHY is our new teaching series going through the Bible "book" of 2nd Timothy. It's actually a letter that the Apostle Paul wrote to a young Christian leader named....drum roll....you'll never guess... TIMOTHY! 😉
Part 1 (and 2 Timothy Chapter 1) is about Testifying with the Spirit of Power. Paul was in prison when he wrote this letter and it actually was the last letter Paul wrote (that we have) before he was killed.
Paul didn't know for certain that he wouldn't survive, but he suspected and therefore he wrote his young protégé his final reminders and priorities that were on his leadership heart. 2 Timothy is basically a passing of the ministry-leadership baton from the first and greatest missionary to a young, seemingly timid ministry leader.
The reminders Paul gives aren't only for those who are in pastoral leadership...they are reminders that all Christians need.

Jesus, Always and Forever is like an answer to the question: "What's the most important thing to know about faith and scripture?" In this 3 week series, we'll unpack:
Jesus from Galilee, the itinerate, preaching Carpenter turned Rabbi-Revolutionary…is still most controversial figure in history!
The historical or theological facts around cross and resurrection aren’t what we usually get hung up on. It’s not typically our theology that’s messy, but our psychology!
Jesus used stories as a major vehicle to jolt our distorted views of God and His parable of the Prodigal Sons in Luke 15:11-32 is the gold standard for this disruption!
How you think God thinks about you shapes everything else! This is what Jesus, Always and Forever, Part 3is all about.

The story of Joseph is one of the most epic in all of the Bible. As you see his story unfold, it’s clear that he was a person of great character, but certainly there were many moments throughout his tragic life that he wondered, “Lord, are you still watching?”
Genesis 42-45 + 50:14-21 provides the powerful finale of the epic story of Joseph and family but even more, it reminds us that, "when you only see the hand of man, don't forget about the hand of God." Derieck shares a powerful message about the sovereignty of God in our lives.

Genesis 39 continues the story of Joseph as a slave and servant in the house of Potiphar, the commander of Pharaoh's guard and specifically when Potiphar's wife put Joseph in a difficult situation (to say the least) ... Joseph lived with integrity and as this story shoes, he also ran with integrity!

Life is busy and our souls can get hurried … and so, we need wisdom and godly character to navigate our calendars and conflict. When our souls are hurried, it’s difficult to simply be present. A hurried life is anxious about all that may be coming, but the present moment matters most because it’s where God is.
I can’t experience God now in the future…
I can’t experience Him now in the past...
I can only experience Him right now, in this present moment!
Ps 118:24: This is the day the Lord has made; We will rejoice and be glad in it.
The present moment is always sacred because it’s where and when we meet God!
But when we become consumed with the DESIRES of this world and the FEARS of the future … our hurried souls often forget God.
So, how can we care for our soul by being attentive to this present moment with God? This is what this sermon is about and we begin with an encounter Jesus had with two female disciples recorded in the Gospel of Luke 10:38-42...

We’re all busy & even worse … we often feel hurried.
It’s tempting to think important people are busy & then live in a hurried pace hoping to make others think we’re buys and therefore important.
But busy is a state of my schedule; Hurried is a state of my soul.
To manage the madness of our schedules & the nurture of our souls, we’ll need need the navigation of wisdom (week 1) as well as a way of navigating the inevitability of conflict collisions.
Have you ever noticed that when you’re extremely busy and hurried, you seem to experience more conflict? If you’re religious, you’ll be tempted to blame spiritual warfare. If not, maybe a cliché like: When it rains it pours.
But if your soul is hurried, especially from desire to be seen as busy … I think part of what happens is that we actually attract or even cause more conflict. But we’ll be too busy or hurried to see and admit it!
Beyond the immature and ineffectiveness of blaming others or searching for some demonic conspiracy … Scripture gives a better and more helpful way of viewing and dealing with conflict.

Everyone is busy but it's the sense of HURRY that is problematic. Busy is a state of my schedule; Hurried is a state of my soul. Life is hard and can feel like managing madness and if we're honest, we want Divine Intervention more for our schedule than our soul!
But God’s will is more ab Character-Building than Prob-Solving
The New Testament connects God’s will to our obedience to Jesus and development of godliness ((Hebrews 10:10; John 6:29; John 14:23; 1 Peter 2:12-17; 1 Thessalonians 4:3-4; 5:16-18)
The HINGE between our character & God’s will is WISDOM!
We face more decisions with access to more information than ever! But more info doesn’t equal better understanding. We need wisdom.
A way to think about wisdom is integrating information with the pursuit of godly character. Learning to choose between: Wrong, Acceptable & Best.
This sermon looks some at the nature of wisdom and then looks at a wise question from 3 views to help us personalize it.

Awareness is shaped slowly by being around the things of God, slowly seeing things differently & then anticipating more.
Awareness is a state. Attention is a verb; Proactive, Intentional. Paying attention is something we exercise; a muscle we can grow, circling us back around to & increasing our awareness.
Too often we wait for life to happen to us, including our life and experience of God. What if there’re ways to actively pay attention to God’s presence?
That’s what this sermon is all about, we hope it’s helpful and challenging. Because “All I Want for Christmas is Presence…God’s”

Throughout the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus is not only wanting to get to the heart of what you do, but He wants to get to the heart of who you are.
In Matthew 6:1-8 we find Jesus urging His followers to not pursue righteous acts to be seen or validated. In today's podcast, Derieck Lopez tries to help us not only recognize the temptation of wanting to be seen, but also how we can submit it to God because the true "reward and validation" we seek can only be found through Him

Matthew 5:27-30, Jesus continues to NOT mince words. In His first “You’ve heard it was said … but I tell you…” (5:21-26) He equated murder with sinful anger expressed in verbal insults laced with contempt. Here, He equates adultery with objectifying another through lust.
Lust, like sinful anger (5:21-26), objectifies the other person, refusing to see them as sacred.
In Contempt, they become an object for our anger-satisfaction.
In Lust, they become an object for our sexual-fantasy-satisfaction.

In Matthew 5:17-20, Jesus assures the people & religious leaders that He wasn’t there to tear things down, but neither to tow a particular “party line” of thinking when it came to scripture…instead, He said: “I’m here to fulfill it!”
Over next 27 verses (21-48), 6 different times, Jesus takes popular Old Testament interpretations or straight quotes but Jesus & digs deeper into the heart of issues like: hatred, lust, revenge, divorce, honesty, revenge. With each issue He begins, “You’ve heard that it was said …” and then offers, “but I tell you…”
The first of these is on hatred & insults, Matthew 5:21-26.

Matthew 5:13-16: You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
Matthew 5:13-16 is a call to INFLUENCE the world as His followers. What does this look like for disciples of Jesus today?

The Bible is complex in its content but there’s complexity in presuppositions we bring TO IT & expectations we put ON IT. Bible is profound & amazing. There’s no book like it! Therefore, we must approach scripture on its terms.
Verses like 1 Timothy 3:16, 2 Peter 1:20-21 & Hebrews 4:12 reveals that a Big PURPOSE of scripture is to move history forward & draws people closer to God!
1 Timothy 3:16: All Scripture is inspired by God (literally “God-Breathed”) and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.
In many ways, the Bible transcends Categories, Ribbons & Sides. It transcends categories where we want to make the bible fit neatly into easily digestible explanations that just happen to fit what we already believe! It transcends tying simple ribbons around difficulties & it transcends a simple use of scripture to prove God is on your side.

KEEP IN MIND: the more you learn to zoom out & get your arms around the big story that scripture is telling (part 2), the more you’ll notice the subtle treasures below the surface.
So, allow us to show some examples of digging in a little…

God exists & has spoken. The Bible is complex in its content but there’s also complexity in the presuppositions we bring TO IT & the expectations we put ON IT.
Part of the aim in this series GOD-BREATHED is to help us approach scripture on its own terms instead of expecting it to be something it never promised to be.
The bible is indeed ancient but clearly brilliant … obviously, since we’re still talking about the same issues scripture unpacks. It presents a narrative of God meeting people where they are, to push history forward and us closer to Christ!
The bible is like a stick of soul-dynamite, but to light the fuse, it’s helpful to ZOOM out before digging-in or applying within. Tonight we’ll focus some on zooming out.

2 Timothy 3:16: “All Scripture is inspired by God (literally, “God-breathed”), useful for teaching, for conviction, for correcting faults, & for showing us how to live godly lives.”
The Bible is complex in its content but there’s also complexity in the presuppositions we bring TO IT & the expectations we put ON IT.
What we have in scripture is living & active dynamite (Hebrews 4:12) to propel us forward (2 Peter 1:20-21) into an even more knowledgeable, honest & godly experience of faith (2 Timothy 3:16)!
Discovering what HAPPENED is important; discovering what GOD IS LIKE is supreme! (Hebrews 1:1-3)
The goal of God-Breathed-Scripture is to carry & move life forward … and people closer to God. But in all of it, we must stay centered on the END, not just the MEANS.
Jesus says to the religious leaders in John 5:39-40: “You diligently study scripture because you think that you’ll find eternal life in them. But these scriptures point to me, for in me is life, yet you refuse to come to me.”
Scriptures is a powerful & needed MEANS, no doubt. BUT JESUS IS THE END!July 01, 2021

We all have power & it can be leveraged for good, but when we compromise, even if we claim it’s for greater good, we corrupt our power to serve our own ends. The Gospels in the New Testament are a gift because they captured multiple encounters that people had with Jesus. People like you and like me.
There are many ways to summarize the life and story of Jesus. One of them is that He came to wake humans up ... to help us see ... like really see. And once you see, you can't unsee!
The first two recorded phrases of Jesus in the Gospel of John opens up a whole new world for us to see & live life. And His first two words conjure up important questions for us to ask ourselves: "What is that I REALLY want from Jesus? And what do I REALLY expect to find?"

“All things” is pretty big; it includes your life and mine!
And in many ways it’s what the rest of the New Testament is all about!
I want to show you one moment, an encounter Jesus had with a religious leader that provides a snapshot of some of what this newness means. And right on time for 2021 :)
John chapter 3, verses 1-15

In Matthew 25:14-30, Jesus tells us a haunting story. It's one where we have to dig a little deeper to uncover the profound truth embedded within the story.
As you dig, there's a remarkable revelation under the surface: "What if the whole thing: life, work, love, leisure ... what if it's all an invitation?

Jesus’ parable-riddles sabotage our assumptions and forces us to consider things like who is my neighbor and who can I cancel? In Matthew 18:21-35, Jesus tells an absurd story because if we’re honest, we are often absurd in our desire to receive grace & mercy while at the same time refusing to offer it in the same manner. This one is called, “How to Cancel Someone Real Good!”

Jesus’ credibility hinges on his resurrection. However, His enduring popularity comes from His style of teaching (answering questions with questions), His friendships with outcasts AND His then shocking & now legendary riddles that He gave to us (breadcrumbs if you will).
And so, in this holiday season of familiar traditions & warm well-wishes, we want to share a few of Jesus’ most memorable riddles where He subtly disrupts our assumptions and norms.
Quite possibly Jesus’ most well-known riddle is found in Luke 10:25-37 & hinges upon this question, “Who’s NOT My Neighbor?”

A common story we tell ourselves is that to overcome massive obstacles & overwhelming odds; to be the underdog who slays the giant ... we often tell ourselves that these victories happen purely from big time faith, courage or a 1 in a million shot!
But what if it isn't simply a greater amount of VALOR needed but a completely different VIEWPOINT?!?! Like what if the viewpoint & victory is born from the very experiences & qualities that make the underdog the underdog?

A common story we tell ourselves is that the experiences that change us…they happen by fate, like a cosmic wheel of chance that crashes into us!
So, we cross our fingers, wish & wait for those big moments to happen to us. But what if every simple moment was actually sacred space inviting you to experience it AND in some ways to help create what happens next?

A common story we tell ourselves is that struggle is bad & if we could just get things to calm & everything fair or if we could get time away, get things organized & systemized, THEN we could live well & see straight!
But what if true insight & perspective was found in the tension & in a deeper, more personal honesty?
In other words: what if the seeing is in the struggling? What if we learned to "Cry Jacob"? Genesis 32 is all about wrestling with God, proclaiming a deep & personal truth, walking differently (limping) & getting a new "name"!

Faith is a marathon, not a sprint! That's the story scripture show us but often the stories we tell ourselves are very different. The story of Noah is one of the oldest in the scriptures. How was God pulling the world forward through this moment & what new ideas were being revealed? God still uses this story & the "Always Truths" embedded in it to help move us closer to Him & one another.

We tell ourselves all kinds of stories; some are hurtful, others are helpful. Something that scripture does is show God stepping into the middle of those stories & flipping them upside-down & offering a new story, a new way to live & see. This series is about some of the oldest stories & this first one is about what it looks like to take a bold step into the dark … because, that’s faith. Main scriptures are Genesis 12, 15 and 22.http://www.shepherdchurch.com

The biblical reality of hell should point us to the object of heaven. Some of the questions we’ll ask here: Is Hell a place of conscious, never-ending soul torment? What is the biblical sequence of events of final judgement? Must the human soul last forever? What does the Old Testament say about judgement & Hell? Who talks about Hell the most in scripture? What are the images & symbols used for judgment? Will God eventually save/reconcile everyone? And we’ll end with 3 action steps in light of what the bible actually says about Hell and final judgment.

There have always been folks who go on & on about the end of the world. And they have all kind of reasons for that, but if we’re honest, we’ve probably had a few thoughts about that at some point in 2020, right?
So, let’s talk about it: The End Times, Last Days & the 2nd Coming of Jesus ... This is Coming Attractions, Part 2!

People have always talked about the last days, the return of Christ, heaven, hell & the end of the world. People are thinking & talking about this now. But before jumping into this, an essential prelude are the most ancient & asked questions, “Why does God allow so much evil & suffering? Why do bad things happen to good people?” Here we try to unpack some basics without getting lost in the philosophical rabbit hole and get to a place of substance & hope … right here & right now, in our present time. This is “Coming Attractions” Part 1.Suggested Resources:BOOKS:

A lot of people don’t seem very self-aware, do they? But how self-aware are you? How do YOU see YOU? Here’s a truth: when life gets heavy & we get squeezed, we leak. And what comes out tells the true story. Whether or not we choose to pay attention? That’s on us…that depends on how you see you. So, how self-aware are you?http://www.shepherdchurch.com

How you behave reveals what you believe … it reveals your viewpoint.
So, thru this chapter & idea of Life with a View, we hope to challenge & inspire each other to: Offer your Body to God (week 1), Change your mind (week 2), Open God’s Gift (week 3) & Love your world (week 4)!
This episode: just verse 1, as it shows us the viewpoint &
one way to live “in view of...”

Lord, teach us to pray … this was the request that Jesus’ disciples made in
Luke 11. Matthew 6:9-13 Jesus teaches them probably the most famous prayer ever, known now as The Lord’s Prayer. Over the next few weeks, we’ll unpack each line of that prayer, but in this episode, we’ll look at the 7 words Jesus says before His actual prayer. Matthew 6:9 begins, “This, then, is HOW you should pray.”May 21, 2020

We all want to see the happy side to our pain now!
We want God to work things for the good right now…
not later on & definitely not after this life!
But neither God or Scripture promises getting all we want or not missing out.
Life in Christ is life within the promise of renewal.
But not all renewal will be seen in this life.

At the heart of Jesus’ teaching was God as loving Father. But for many, because of painful experiences with their earthly fathers, this seems foreign. Romans 8:14-17 reveals God
as Father in 4 powerful ways. We hope these truths inspire & stretch your heart to take baby steps forward...towards your Heavenly Father! - http://www.wearesya.com - April 16, 2020 - Dusty Frizzell
Romans chapter 8 is an amazing anchor right in the heart of the New Testament. It begins with “no condemnation” by blowing up the power and lies of shame and it ends with a promise of “no separation” and if nothing can separate, then nothing … is everything! - http://www.wearesya.com - April 16, 2020 - Dusty Frizzell
The resurrection of Jesus is THE foundation of the Christian faith. Something happened 2,000 years ago that fundamentally changed history. If it wasn’t Jesus’ resurrection, what was it? But if the resurrection is only historical & literal & believed in our heads but doesn’t reside in the depths of our beating hearts … well, this would be the greatest tragedy of all!
All of that is what this episode is about.

In the episode after this one, we will unpack why the resurrection of Jesus is THE central piece of the Christian faith. But this short episode is a meditation on the “trembling bewilderment” that takes place before resurrection. It’s a look at the space in between; the tension between the hope and the dread of what might be coming in the dark.
