The Coach’s Road is hosted by Derek Read and Rick Schreiber, currently students at Vierumäki. In this show we discuss topics that a well-rounded and successful coach needs to know in order to develop people, athletes and players. Coaching is not just about the championships or wins and losses, it is first and foremost about developing humans. Every coach has a different road, and we hope to provide information and insights to help you find the right directions for yourself. We will explore sport and exercise psychology, physiology, development pathways, pedagogies and many other topics.
In this episode we talk with Scott Moser, Associate Head Coach with UVM Catamounts Hockey in NCAA Division I. We chat about how Scott got started in coaching and how coaching golf helped his coaching in hockey. We also dive into the major lessons Scott has picked up from other coaches and positions in his career and how he coaches at UVM. Thanks Scott for a great conversation!

We have a great conversation around the games and learning from and carrying on the success of USA Hockey at the World Juniors and Women’s U18 World Championships. We also talk about their guiding mantra of People over Pucks and how that has helped prepare the staff and team for a short, but exciting tournament. We also touch on how they each prepared themselves for the tournament and emphasis they have heading into the Games!

This week we chat with Bob Mancini, Regional Manager for USA Hockey's American Development Model. Bob has also spent time with the Oilers Organization and the South African Hockey Association and has been with USAH since the start of the ADM in 2009. With Bob we get into the development path of his son Victor, how his time with the Oilers and South Africa helps him in his current role, and how the ADM has changed in the 12 years it has been around so far. This week we welcome on Professor Jean Côté from Queens University in Kingston, ON. Prof. Côté has done a lot of research on early sampling and formulated the Development Model of Sports Participation (DMSP) back in 1999. We dive into the structure of the model in today's conversation and also talk about early sampling vs. early specializing, deliberate practice vs. deliberate play, and how to progress an athlete through the DMSP. We also talk about why sampling is important to consider when an athlete is young and the importance of diversification and play in the childhood years. In this week's episode we welcome on Dean Kriellaars from the College of Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of Manitoba. We talk with Dean about Physical Literacy and his work in this field. This is quite the episode exploring physical literacy and everything that it goes into. Jochen has a storied playing career starting back in West Berlin and ended with 17 years playing on the professional level including 7 world championships and the 1998 Olympic Games in Nagano. In this week's episode we chat with Anders Wahlström the Children and Youth Manager for the Swedish Ice Hockey Association about a recent study done between them and FIHA on the appropriate game formats for youth hockey. We dive into the results of the study and talk about how it is being implemented and the expectations for the changes. We also talk about the new Home Field Model that the Swedish Ice Hockey Association is rolling out this season and the four guiding principles of the model. Finally we discuss how Sweden is creating buy-in from their communities for these new changes to youth hockey in the country. In this Coach's Road we explore the journey of Shaun Hathaway, Executive Director of Team Colorado Girls AAA Hockey Program. Shaun also serves as the Head Coach of the Colorado Springs Jr. Tigers 14 & Under team and the ADM Coordinator for the state of Colorado. Previously Shaun served as the Executive Director of the Aspen Leafs and has been involved in youth hockey in Colorado since 1997. Shaun has a Masters in Sports Studies from the University of Miami, Ohio and a Masters in Teaching from Colorado College. He received both of his Masters after studying Political Science at Knox College.

This week's episode features Anders Lundberg, the Manager of Player Development for the Swedish Ice Hockey Association. Anders also serves as the head coach of the U18 Women's National Team in Sweden. This is the next installation in our series exploring top development countries around the world but one of our favorites as it is full of practical ideas that can be implemented by any coach around the sports world. In this episode we explore the path of Dan Jablonic, father of twins and ADM Regional Manager for USA Hockey. Dan grew up playing in Minnesota where he played for Blaine High School. He then moved to play in the USHL before moving to play at the University of Minnesota Duluth from 1993-97. While at Duluth, Dan received a bachelors in sports psychology. After college he played in the ECHL and spent time playing in Sweden. Dan started his coaching journey in college working at camps and hockey schools in Minnesota. He began coaching officially in Skelleftea (Sweden) in 2005 as an Assistant coach for th U18 team. He moved to U20 and then as an Assistant Coach for the Men's SHL team. He then moved to coach at Timra IK as the head coach of the U20 team. Before moving back to the US, Dan made a final stop in Sweden at Frölunda Gothenburg where he served as an Assistant Coach. Dan returned Stateside and became the Hockey Director for the Washington Little Caps where he spent almost 7 years. He then became a Regional Manager for the state of Illinois in 2018 where he is working currently. With Dan we talk about his favorite hockey memory, why he started coaching and what helped him get started, his motivation, his philosophy and values, and what he brings back to the US with him from his time in Sweden. We then explore the responsibility of his current role and the advice he would give himself if he was starting his path again. After winning a championship in the OHL and the U20 World Championship with Finland, Petri moved back to Finland to play with Tappara where he won a Liiga title. Petri finished his playing career with two years in Berlin and two years with Klagenfurter AC. After playing Petri received a Bachelor's in sports coaching in Vierumäki from 2002-2006. He started coaching in 2003 as an Assistant coach for the Finnish U20 National Team winning a Bronze medal with them. In the 2004-2005 he coached the Lahti Pelicans then moved to be an Assistant Coach for the Espoo Blues for 2 years. He became the Head Coach of the Blues in 2007 and worked there until 2011 where he won Liiga's Coach of the Year twice. In 2011 he took over the IFK Helsinki team for one season. From 2010-2012 he also served as the Assistant coach for the Finnish Men's National Team and won a World Championship in 2011. In 2012 he moved to Avangard Omsk of the KHL where he spent a little over a season before moving to Graz 99ers in the EBEL in Austria. In 2014 he took the Head Coaching job in HC Slovan Bratislava of the KHL for one season then returned to Finland to coach the Pelicans once again from 2015-2018. In 2018, Petri moved to his current role as Head Coach of Klagenfurter AC in EBEL/IceHL where he won the league in 2018-19. Specifically we talk with Petri about his core values, coaching philosophy, winning habits and team environment. He has had quite a journey so far and we are thankful for the stories and ideas he shared with us today. Petri mentions Jürgen Klopp and Vince Lombardi as a couple of coaches that he studies and suggests Mika Waltari's book The Egyptian. This weeks episode features Erkka Westerlund, former Head Coach of the Finnish Men's National Team as well as coaching in Liiga and the KHL. It was an honor to talk with Erkka today about athlete centered coaching and how it differs from coach centered coaching. We also talked with Erkka about why he switched to athlete centered coaching, the benefits this approach has for the athletes and the importance of developing good coach-athlete relationships. Within these topics we talk about athlete development plans, mental resources and when it is still appropriate to use a coach centered approach.
Erkka provides a lot of ideas in the episode and it is well worth the listen! Erkka also has a book called Elämän peliä (The Game of Life) available only in Finnish, however, it is worth the read as it provides great insights into Erkka's experiences and knowledge.

This week's episode is a little bit different. Sticking to our theme of culture and development we discuss our own development through hockey. Rick grew up in Germany, playing for ECC Preussen Berlin and Derek grew up in the U.S. playing for the Colorado Springs Jr. Tigers so it provides us a good chance to compare the environments, coaches and lessons we had growing up. We discuss how each of us got started playing hockey, the environments and coaches we had, and the lessons that we learned. Then we shift to talk about how and why we got into coaching and how we got introduced to the program at Vierumäki. Even though we come from different cultures, it is interesting to see that our experiences in playing and coaching are not as different as we might have thought.

Today we explore the road that Coach Saara Niemi has taken through her career so far. As a player Saara played for the University of Minnesota Duluth, Ilves and the Finnish Women's National Team. During her playing days she won championships at the college and professional level and won Olympic and World Championship Bronze. Saara started her coaching career in 2011 when she became the Ice Hockey Coordinator in Kisakallio. From there she worked as a tutor-coach for the Finnish Ice Hockey Association, working to educate coaches of players aged 10-13 years old. During the three year period as a tutor coach and ice hockey coordinator, Saara was studying at University of Jyväskylä in the Masters Program of Social Sciences of Sport and serving as a Mentor for Team France in the IIHF Ambassador and Mentor Program. Additionally, the final year of this period from 2011-2014, she worked as a Sports Reporter for the SM-Liiga in Finland. In 2014 she transitioned to a role at the Finnish Ice Hockey Association in charge of Girls Hockey Development until 2017. During that time she also coaches the Red Wings Girls Team. In 2017, Saara moved to Guangdong, China and became the Assistant Coach of the Kulun Red Stars of the CWHL for one season. Finally, in 2018, Saara returned to Finland and is now Head Coach and General Manager of the IFK Helsinki Women's Hockey Team.
With Saara we discuss the impact that playing in the US had on her coaching style and philosophy. Similarly, we discuss the impact of having experience working in China and with Team France on her coaching philosophy. We explore the role of her education in her development and we discuss the type of environment and values she works to have in her teams. Saara recommends a couple of books that she is reading and enjoyed: "Peak" by Anders Ericsson and "The Anatomy of Winning" by Okari Saari.

We dive into the American Development Model (ADM) and why USAH needed to make a change towards age appropriate, long-term development. Finally, we talk about the role of a coach and what USAH is looking to develop in its coaches through their coaching education program.

Today we chat with Aku Nieminen the Membership Development Manager from the International Ice Hockey Federation about their role in developing hockey around the world. We talk about the programs, seminars and camps the IIHF offers its 81 members countries and what kind of coaches the IIHF wants to develop. We go through the Coach Development Framework being published this fall. We also explore what culture is and what hockey culture is more specifically. We discuss what makes hockey culture unique if it is, how the IIHF handles working with different cultures and simply what is culture? Aku turns this question back on us and it leads to a great discussion.

Today's guest is Jukka Varmanen, a professional coach from Heinola, Finland. Jukka started his journey as a coach in 2000 with the junior organization of Heinolan Kiekko as an U18 coach. After two seasons in Heinola he joined the junior organization of HIFK in Helsinki. After spending five years with HIFK he worked two years with Lahden Kiekko-Reipas which is now the Lahti Peilcans. In 2009 he gained his first experience on the professional level as an assistant coach with Jokipojat. For the 2010-11 season he became the head coach of the team. In our conversation Jukka describes his time as a head coach in Joensuu as a one of the most challenging barriers he had to overcome on his coaching path so far. Reflecting back the lessons he has learned there were very valuable to him. The experience he has gained there is until today his favorite failure. Afterwards he moved on and became the U20 head coach for Vierumäki United for two seasons. In 2013 he went back to the professional level and worked for three seasons as an assistant coach for his hometown team Peliitat. From 2011 till 2016 he also worked for the IIHCE in Vierumäki. During the 2016-17 season he gained his first experience in a different culture with the Chinese KHL team Kunlun Stars. After spending one season in the KHL he went back to Finland and joined the Lahti Pelicans in January 2018 as an assistant coach. After he had worked with the Pelicans he returned to the IIHCE for one year. During the 2019-20 season he worked in the NLA for SC Bern where he gained his second experience in a different culture. This season he will work again as an assistant coach in Liiga for JYP Jyväskylä. Furthermore, Jukka gained experience with the Finnish U18, U20 and Men’s National Team. In 2019 he won gold medals with both the Finnish U20 and Men’s National teams at the IIHF world championships. With Jukka we discussed his educational background in Vierumäki and how the studies have impacted his coaching. As he has gained a lot of experience as an assistant coach, we also talked with him what his role is in establishing a culture, identity and environment in a team. Additionally, we explore with him about the experience he has gained in different cultures. Finally, we spoke with Jukka about the time he spent working with the Finnish National Team program and what he has been taking away from it so far. As always, we ask Jukka for some recommendations of resources he found useful and interesting: "Sacred Hoops" and "The Last Season" by Phil Jackson, and "The Culture Code" by Daniel Coyle. Today's guests are Branislav Bendik, a skills coach from Slovakia, Dustin Timm, the Executive Director of the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders and Jaakko Räty, a Skills Coach and Head of Coaching for Junior Pelicans in Lahti. These three coaches have received or are receiving a formal education in the field of sports coaching and have lot of experience they bring to the episode. We discuss with them what skill actually is in their eyes, what essential hockey skills are and what is game sense and how do we teach it. Additionally, we discuss the decision between coaches and players on what to work on, their style of feedback and what skills do they start with at which age or skill level. It was interesting to hear three different perspectives from coaches around the world and see the similarities and differences between them. We hope you enjoy as well.

This episode is a great conversation with Lauri Hakala. Lauri is the High Performance Coordinator for team ball sports at the Finnish Olympic Committee. He brings in a interesting and experienced perspective on Anders Ericsson's work of deliberate practice. We discuss with Lauri the difference between naive, purposeful and deliberate practice; how we can use deliberate practice in team sports; and what are some of the principles and concepts we coaches need to look out for. Lauri's previous experience comes from volleyball where he has served as an assistant coach at Pepperdine University, ACH Ljubljana, Slovenia Men’s National Team, Swiss Men’s National Team, Finland Men’s & Women’s National Team and Dutch Women’s National Team. He has also served as a head coach at LeKa volley and at Sollentuna VK. He also played professionally and represented Finland in beach volleyball a few times.

Our first guest for this series is Pierre Pagé. Pierre is a former GM, coach, sport director and global hockey academy sport director. Pierre's moto is "Develop and win in three years or less." Pierre had a successful coaching career spanning close to 50 years. Pierre started his journey at Dalhousie University in Halifax, CA and went on to have experience in the NHL, AHL, CHL, DEL, NLA and EBEL. In this week's episode we talk with Dean Holden about critical reflection, what separates critical reflection from just reflection, questions to ask yourself, the role of a mentor in critical reflection and how to help players use critical reflection.
Dean Holden, PhD in Sport Coaching (in progress), has been learning and operating within the coaching, teaching, and mentoring area since the early 1980's.
He applies critical thought to solve problems and facilitate positive change within people and organizations.
The best word to summarize his approach would be 'Pracademic' - one who translates the latest learning and performance research into proven, actionable strategies.
Along the way, Dean embeds life skills through sport because he strongly advocates that athletes have the right to enjoy a positive experience: have fun, learn, and want to return/give back!
This episode is much longer than usual, Dean provides many insights and stories throughout the interview and really makes it worth listening to the whole thing!
