It's been a minute but Session Blood is back! After luring in some VIP guests with the promise of a 'quick 30 minute' interview, this turned into something a little more long form but I promise you it's well worth a listen!

We've tracked down the NZ National Champion and both semi-finalists to come on the show and share their experiences in the lead-up to the NZ National Championship as well as the tournament itself. We've got highlights, lowlights and everything in between, with some good discussion on deck selection, draft testing and metagame strategy in there as well.

The esteemed guests also share their thoughts on the recent bans + errata announcement, the state of the international metagame and skill level, and what they're excited to see in Everfest.

A huge thank you to all involved for taking the time to come along and have a chat! After putting them on the spot for a few shout-outs, the lovely guests requested I add a few extra that were inadvertently missed in the pressure-cooker of the Session Blood gauntlet.

Antonio Radich and Kieran Carnegie (aka Kieran Prime), our guests have nothing but love and respect for everything y'all do! All three guests also requested that a special shout-out be given to Flesh and Blood wunderkind Jack Whit, the youngest player at NZ Nationals at only 16 (!) years old, who delivered an incredible performance over the weekend but came up just short with a heartbreaking 9th place. Keep doing what you're doing Jack, there's a bright future ahead for you in the FAB world!

In this week’s episode we explore the latest craze in the FAB competitive underground scene, the Rumble, and discuss the developing Classic Constructed with its founding members (who happen to be some of New Zealand’s top players). A link to the Rumble discord is included at the bottom of the video description.

We start by introducing Jason Lai, Jordan Nelson-Fussell and Rohan Khanna, who kindly agreed to come on the show, and talk to us about how the Rumble started. We discuss their experience with it so far, the general spirit of the Rumble, and some notable players who have started to make a name for themselves so far.

The episode then moves to a discussion of their thoughts on the developing Classic Constructed meta. We get their thoughts on what they believe some of the best decks are, the matchups between Tier 1 decks, as well as some general observations on topics such as sideboarding, ‘rogue decks’, and more.

We finish off by asking for predictions for the first set of Road to Nationals event this weekend and any advice/tips they have for players attending these events for the first time.

A big thanks from us here at Session Blood to these players for taking the time to share their thoughts with us (and you!) leading up to the big events this weekend. Good luck to everyone participating!

Road to Nationals events are fast approaching and that means one thing - it's Classic Constructed season!  A 170+ person international Classic Constructed event (which raised 50k for charity!) has just concluded, providing us with a sneak peek at what the early Monarch Metagame may look like.

Fortunately for our loyal listeners, one of your "humble" hosts managed to survive the Swiss and take down the Top 8 to emerge from the event victorious on Katsu!

In this week's episode, Karol takes the role of interviewer and speaks to Kieran (aka the self-anointed Mr Classic) about the tournament. We go through the thought process behind choosing Katsu for this tournament, reasons for specific cards, thoughts and sideboarding strategies for different matchups, and thoughts on the metagame going into Road to Nationals season.

NOTE: This episode was recorded a few days before Pre-Release weekend.

After months of hype and excitement (and some rampant speculation around card predictions) Monarch is finally here!

Rohan was kind enough to join us a few nights before the first Pre-Release to discuss his first impressions of Monarch. We ask Rohan his thoughts on the heroes for Classic Constructed, the new mechanics, what he’s been testing so far and what he’s looking forward to playing at the Pre-Releases this weekend!

Huge shout out to Rohan for agreeing to jump on and talk with us before all the cards were revealed!

Good luck to everyone playing in Pre-Releases this weekend and may the FAB gods bless your pulls 😁

The Banothos has been swung for the first time! The recent announcement that Drone of Brutality has been banned in both Blitz and Classic Constructed has generated a healthy discussion in the FAB community about the potential effects of the decision and the reasons behind.

Your intrepid Session Blood hosts ventured forth to LSS HQ to interview LSS Developer Jason Chung, who graciously agreed to sit down with us and answer a few questions regarding the Drone ban decision. These included why Drone was banned, the process behind its design and whether the ban was directed at Ira. And don't worry, we didn't forget to ask about Flic Flak!

Skirmish season is in full swing and a certain WTR Hero has been making waves recently. We're talking, OF COURSE, about none other than the Hand of Sol herself: Dorinthea!

We start off the episode with a brief rundown of Team Sealed to round off our review of the tournaments that were part of The Calling weekend, with Karol giving an overview of the format and some thoughts of his experience playing in it.

We then move on to the main topic of the episode, a discussion of the impact Dorinthea has been having on the metagame and the impact this will have on upcoming Skirmish events, including some potential dark horse decks that might rise to take on the new contender for the Blitz Crown.

In this week's episode we round off our coverage of events held as part The Calling weekend with a look at Arcane Rising sealed.

We discuss our experience at the PTI qualifier event, talking about what class we decided to play and the strategy we had going in to the tournament.

The episode then moves to an overview of Arcane Rising from the perspective of each of the Heroes. We start with our go-to strategy, the infamous Runeblade pile, analysing its strengths and giving some tips on how to build the deck (doable in roughly 30 seconds lol!) and more importantly how to play it. We also look at Dash, Azalea and Kano, giving our thoughts on cards to look out for, powerful interactions, and general strategies for playing these classes.

We also discuss the dreaded Induction Chamber at points throughout the episode and offer up some ideas on how to combat it!

The Calling: Auckland has come and gone.

In this week's episode we break down the results and discuss our thoughts on the dominating performance of Ira and the metagame of the tournament itself.

We start off by focusing on Ira, talking about why the deck did so well, looking at how the deck has evolved over the course of the Blitz season, and some of the key card choices that emerged in the successful decks.

We then move on to looking at the other two most-played decks at the tournament, Kano and Dorinthea, with a focus on some innovative card choices and why Kano wasn't quite as prevalent at the tournament as we expected.

Finally, we take a look at some of the other decks played at the tournament and talk about why they might have struggled in The Calling meta.

We also sprinkle some thoughts and opinions on the Blitz format in general throughout the episode as well as a few tips and tricks about certain matchups and game states that we picked up during testing and in the tournament.

The Calling: Auckland is only days away! In this week's episode we focus on two main topics: Tournament Preparation and Arcane Rising Sealed.

The first half of the episode largely looks at tournament prep, breaking down the stages of how we suggest preparing for a tournament from the time its announced right up to things you should be considering on the day itself.

We then move on to discuss some of our thoughts on Arcane Rising Sealed. We feel it's a format that flown under the radar a bit and we're big fans of the format! There is also an Arcane Rising Sealed tournament the day before The Calling (part of the official Calling weekend schedule) with some amazing prizes including a Gold Legendary and PTIs (Professional Tournament Invites) so we wanted to put a bit of a spotlight on the 'little brother' event of the weekend.

Merry Christmas everyone!

The past couple of episodes have looked at specific heroes and some advice on how to deal with them. In this week's episode, we decided to take look at some broader strategy advice and discuss the concept of identifying and playing towards (or against!) a particular game plan. We draw on examples from games we've played in tournaments, with a few reaching back into earlier metas in FAB history!

We start by breaking down the types of strategies that you'll tend to play against into some rough categories and give examples of current decks that fall into these categories. We briefly talk about adapting your strategy during a game based on the game state, using some examples from our own experience (contextual factors such as life total, cards you've drawn, what's been pitched, what's left in your deck etc). This is a point we come back to at later stages in the episode also.

The episode then progresses to talking about formulating a game plan for particular matchups, based on identifying what your deck is built around and what your opponent's primary strategy is. We draw on examples from the first Classic Constructed Calling and NZ Nationals to apply the theoretical side to some real life game situations. We stress the importance here of figuring out what your opponent is trying to do during the game in order to avoid falling into a trap where it's too late to adjust.

This is a topic that we both feel is extremely important for taking your gameplay to the next level so we hope y'all find it useful. Let us know what you think!

Last week we looked at strategies on how to deal with Dorinthea. We decided to continue on with that theme and this week's episode focuses on how to deal with another classic boogeyman from WTR - Katsu the Ninja! The video of this podcast can be found on our YouTube channel if you want to check it out!

Katsu is another Hero that we've heard a lot of people in the community have struggled to deal with. The combination of low-cost go-again attacks, powerful combo lines, on-hit triggers and annoying attack reactions definitely make it a very difficult Hero to block correctly against.

We did our best to cover as much as possible about playing against Katsu in this episode. We look at the attack reactions Katsu plays and how to try play around them, how to avoid Mask of Momentum blowouts, playing around Snapdragon Scalers and Breaking Scales, the most widely played Combo lines and how to block against them, dealing with Plunder Run turns, and how to put pressure on Katsu's weak spots. We also sprinkle in some general advice on small things you can to try and improve the matchup.

We start off the episode by announcing the winners from our special Thanksgiving Edition podcast! If you're one of our lucky winners keep an eye on your email as we'll be in touch to get your address details.

The focus of this week's episode is methods and strategies you can use when playing against Dorinthea and her pesky Dawnblade. We've seen a lot of people in the community mention that they're having trouble beating Warrior so we wanted to do our best to try even the playing field!

We discuss some common gameplay scenarios and give our take on cards you can include to help with the Warrior matchup, the best way to block when facing down cards like Warrior's Valor and Spoils of War, playing around Reprise triggers, blocking with Equipment and more!

Special episode for Thanksgiving!

We don't traditionally celebrate Thanksgiving down here in New Zealand but we felt like it was a great opportunity to reflect on all the things we're thankful for that FAB has given us. We also wanted to give a little something back to all our loyal listeners so tune in hear details of how you can score yourself one of our mystery prizes!

Also don't worry, we didn't forget to throw in some FAB content too. Sticking with the Thanksgiving theme, we go through every Class and choose a few cards each from Crucible of War that we think they should be thankful for along with an explanation for our choices. Hopefully these help give an idea of why these cards are so widely used in competitive play and how to use them, or in some cases act as inspiration for some fresh deck ideas!

Happy Thanksgiving from Session Blood!

We're back! In this week's episode we focus on the recent 'BlitzCon' (Blitz Constructed tournament) held in New Zealand. This tournament was originally meant to be a Classic Constructed Road to Nationals event but got postponed due to Covid. The organisers decided to host it as a Blitz tournament, providing us with an early insight into how the Blitz metagame is shaping up.

We start by discussing our experiences in the tournament, talking about what decks we chose to play and why, as well as our favourite games and what we learnt from the experience about Blitz as a format.

The focus then shifts to the dominant deck of the format, looking at the different builds and analysing why it performed so well. We then look at some of the other Top 8 decks and give some final thoughts on the Blitz metagame going forward.

In this week's episode we are joined by a special guest Hayden Dale! Hayden won The Calling: Sydney and is a featured contributor for Flesh and Blood on ChannelFireball (go check out his articles!). He is also a noted Runeblade enthusiast and theorycrafter.

We start by asking Hayden about his TCG background and how he got into FAB. We move to the focus of the episode with questions about whether Runeblade is an underrated class and why it hasn't seemed to have been embraced by the competitive community so far.

The discussion then proceeds to the different builds that Runeblade players can utilise. We go through an individual deep-dive into the Aggro and Control builds. This includes game plans/strategy, Equipment choices, discussions about specific cards (including things to avoid), and things to consider when constructing a Runeblade deck.

We finish things off by talking about the matchups against the top tier Heroes for each build, with Hayden giving his thoughts on particular metagames that each build is better suited for.

In this week's episode we talk about the concept of "life as a resource" and how it applies to FAB. We look at some examples of particular classes such as Dash (Mechanologist) and Ninja. We also discuss how the value of life can change as the game progresses and key life totals to watch out for against certain classes such as Brute and Warrior.

The episode then moves to talking about some tips and tricks for the  Welcome to Rathe classes. This part is less of a deep-dive and more of us trying to give some advice on small things you can do with each class to improve your chances of winning.

We then discuss our thoughts on how to approach building up a collection and learning the game without breaking the bank. We finish off by giving an example of how you can build a cheap yet powerful budget Ninja deck if you crack something like a Mask of Momentum in your packs and want to give the Hero a go!

Cayle answers our questions on how the idea of a 'Control deck' operates in FAB and how this differs from other games such as MTG. Matt was kind enough to join us for the first 40 minutes and answer some questions regarding his deck choice, testing process, memorable moments and more! We round out the rest of the episode with a discussion of Kieran's tournament (ending in a 3rd place finish), including the inspiration behind the switch to playing Brute and the experience of playing a relatively unfamiliar class in a tournament setting.

NB: WE HIGHLY RECOMMEND KEEPING AN EYE OUT FOR THE FOLLOWING - Matt, in conjunction with his testing partners, will be releasing an in-depth 'deck tech' analysis of his tournament-winning Dash deck very soon! This will include high-level insights into the Mechanologist class that they gained during testing, including gameplay strategy and how to beat it.
