Donald is heading back to Ohio to rejoin his family, but he still needs help covering monthly bills and expenses. Founder, Jill Gurr, taught a Screenwriting workshop at Optimist Youth Homes, a boys’ detention center in Eagle Rock, where she co-wrote a script with a group of incarcerated teens. Jill discovered that many of these boys were illiterate, but when her program ended, they had learned how to read and write, while others wanted to go back to school or enter college. One tough gang leader even had tattoos removed from his neck and hands. Seeing the incredible impact of this program, she initiated a second Screenwriting workshop at a co-ed detention facility and got the same results. After that, Jill was inspired to help young people who have endured difficult situations and founded Create Now, a non-profit organization that gives youth opportunities to find their voices through creative arts mentoring and education. Sergio Oliva is the Director of National Programs for the Braille Institute of America, Inc. (BIA). Sergio manages the growth and development of regional and national programs, including The Braille Challenge, Special Collections. Sergio was part of developing the only national reading and writing contest in braille for students who are blind and visually impaired. Reading to Kids conducts monthly reading clubs in eight Los Angeles area elementary schools, serving 800 to 1,200 children monthly. The reading clubs are conducted with the help of 300 to 600 volunteers each month. This non-profit helps to inspire kids with a love of reading. Herb Smith, the President of the L.A. Mission talks about the Mission's Thanksgiving meal for the homeless on November 23rd, that provides a huge outdoor dining experience for the 2,500 to 3,000 guests who come. The meal is being overseen by Chef Timothy Hollingsworth of Otium in downtown LA, along with a group of other well-known chefs from the area. They will be distributing blankets, tarps and hygiene kits to participants. On a normal day the Mission prepares and serves between 1,500 and 1,800 meals and provides emergency lodging for men, along with clothing distribution and showers on a daily basis. The L.A. Mission has a long-term rehabilitation program for men and also offers a long-term program for women at the Anne Douglas Center for Women, named for Mrs. Kirk Douglas.
